AND THIS IS A STATEWIDE SURVEY AND THEY'RE HOPING TO COMPILE THE INFORMATION AND THEN TO BE ABLE TO COME BACK WITH A MISSION THAT IS THOUGHTFULLY STRUCTURED.
THEY HAVE A COUPLE, THEY'VE GOT FIVE AREAS RIGHT NOW THAT THEY'VE ALREADY PUT TOGETHER, THEY'RE KEY FACTORS.
THE FIRST ONE IS DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF WASDA'S WORK, CLEAR AND RESPONSIBLE PLANNING, FOCUS ON KEY LEVERS, AND INCLUSIVE AND LAYERED ENGAGEMENT STRATEGY AND PROVEN TRACK RECORD.
AND THEY WANT TO BE, THE STRATEGIC PLANNING EFFORT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO ALIGN WASDA'S PRIORITIES AND TO STRENGTHEN ITS IMPACT, WHICH I'M VERY HAPPY ABOUT.

AND THEN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, EVERY SCHOOL BOARD IN THE STATE IS ELIGIBLE TO HAVE A DELEGATE CAST A VOTE ON.
SO ONCE WE GET THE BOOK AND CAN LOOK AT IT AND SEE HOW WE FEEL, WE CAN ACTUALLY DECIDE HOW WE WANT TO VOTE.
THE LAST THING IS SOMETHING NEW THAT I GOT FROM THE NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION.
THEY HAVE A COMMITTEE THAT IS MORE FEDERAL.
THEY'VE DECIDED THAT THE COMMITTEE HAS DECIDED THAT THEY WANT TO ENCOURAGE EFFORTS TO BE SHIFTING AUTHORITY TO THE STATES, CONSOLIDATING PROGRAMS AND RESTRUCTURING FEDERAL EDUCATION FUNCTIONS ACROSS AGENCIES.
AND OUR SENATOR, PATTY MURRAY, HAD SEVERAL THINGS TO SAY.
ONE OF THEM WAS FEDERAL ROLE VERSUS STATE CONTROL AND SHE EXPRESSED CONCERN ABOUT WEAKENING FEDERAL LEADERSHIP.

AND BECAUSE OF THAT, IT MAY MAKE MORE SENSE TO FIRST IMPROVE HOW THE EXISTING STUDENT REPS ARE INCLUDED, COMMUNICATED WITH, AND SUPPORTED BEFORE SIMPLY INCREASING THE NUMBER OF REPRESENTATIVES.
I ALSO WANT TO ADDRESS THE PROPOSED STRATEGIC PLAN.

THEY WILL FOLLOW PEOPLE INTO ADULTHOOD.
THEY LIMIT EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES, INCREASE POVERTY, AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE CYCLES THAT BECOME FAR MORE EXPENSIVE, BOTH FINANCIALLY AND SOCIALLY, THAN INVESTING IN EDUCATION EARLY.
I UNDERSTAND THE DISTRICT IS FACING FINANCIAL CHALLENGES FOLLOWING OUR LEVY FAILURES AND ONGOING BUDGET CONSTRAINTS.

MORE KIDS GET TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SCHOOL GOVERNANCE AND DECISION-MAKING PROCESS.
IMPROVED COMMUNICATION THAT WE WOULD HAVE MORE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR FROM MORE STUDENTS AND THERE BECAUSE THEY'RE IN THEIR VARIOUS SCHOOLS ALREADY AND THEY'RE ABLE TO BRING FORTH WHAT OTHER STUDENTS ARE FEELING AND THINKING.
EMPOWERMENT IT GIVES THEM A MORE OF A VOICE.
PROMOTING INTERESTS AND NEEDS, ENCOURAGE PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN THE TRADITIONAL AND THE ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS, WHICH WE DO WANT THERE TO BE A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THEM.
AND THEN JUST HOLISTIC POLICY DEVELOPMENT.
IT DOES LEAD TO MORE COMPREHENSIVE POLICIES THAT CONSIDER THE NEEDS OF ALL

THEY SEE LIFE DIFFERENTLY, AND I JUST WOULD WELCOME HAVING THOSE EXTRA VOICES AND THOSE EXTRA IDEAS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO HEAR, TO NAVIGATE BEING ON THE BOARD.
SO THAT'S THE REASON FOR BRINGING IT FORWARD, AND IT'S UP TO ALL OF YOU TO DECIDE IF YOU THINK IT'S A GREAT IDEA OR NOT SUCH A GREAT IDEA.

SO NEXT YEAR WOULD BE OUR PLANNING YEAR SO THAT WE CAN IMPLEMENT IN THE FALL OF 27.
SO WOULD IT SAY 27 TO 32? TYPICALLY THEY'RE FOUR OR FIVE YEARS.
OKAY, SO IT NEEDS TO BE ON THE BOARD SEPTEMBER 27, CORRECT? YES.
SO WE ALMOST ONLY HAVE A YEAR TO GET THIS DONE.
SO IF WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING THIS PLANNING AND ALL THIS KIND OF STUFF, NOW IS THE TIME THAT WE HAVE TO START THINKING ABOUT THIS.
AND SO YOUR IDEA ABOUT A WORK SESSION DURING THE SUMMER WHERE WE CAN REVISIT THE DATA THAT WE MIGHT USE TO DRAW ON TO SET ANY DATA THAT WE'RE GOING TO USE IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN WOULD BE TIMELY.
SO IF WE DON'T STRIKE, WE'RE NOT GOING TO BE PREPARED AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO HAVE THE WORK DONE.
AND I WOULD SAY STRATEGIC PLANS ARE EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE STUDENT-INVITED WORK TO SAY THAT.
SO IF WE DO SOME WORK THIS SUMMER, THEN WE CAN PRESENT THAT TO THE COMMITTEE IN THE FALL TO WORK ON THAT.
YEAH, I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY THAT WE'VE ALWAYS INCLUDED A PROCESS, EVEN PRIOR TO THIS STRATEGIC PLAN OF COMMUNITY INPUT, TOO.
SO WHEN WE GET SOME PIECES CODIFIED HERE, I THINK IT WOULD BE IMPORTANT TO LOOP OUT, TO LYNELLE'S POINT, OUR STUDENTS AND OUR COMMUNITY AND MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE NOT MISSING SOMETHING THAT OUR COMMUNITY, BUT STARTING WITH LISTENING SESSIONS BEFORE WE EVEN DRAFT WOULD PROBABLY MAKE A LOT OF SENSE.
