I, WHEN I ASKED OUR TEACHERS, I WAS LIKE, WHAT SHOULD I HIGHLIGHT? I GOT SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS. THEY WERE ALL SO EXCITED TO TELL ME ABOUT THEIR PROGRAMS AND ALL THESE THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED. SO I TRIED MY BEST TO KIND OF GET LIKE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS, BUT THERE WAS A LOT.
SO OUR SPORTS HAVE DONE REALLY WELL THIS YEAR.
SO GIRLS VOLLEYBALL THIS FALL, THEY HAD MORE WINS THIS YEAR THAN THEY HAVE IN THE PREVIOUS FIVE YEARS, WHICH WAS REALLY COOL TO SEE THAT THEY'RE JUST CONTINUING TO GROW AND IMPROVE.
AND THEY WERE RANKED TOP TWO IN THE LEAGUE, WHICH WAS COOL TO SEE BECAUSE OUR FOOTBALL TEAM, I DON'T KNOW, THEY JUST HAVE GROWN A LOT AND IT'S COOL TO BE ABLE TO WATCH. EVEN JUST OVER THE FOUR YEARS I'VE BEEN AT THE SCHOOL. ONE OF OUR STUDENTS, LORD KING, HE ENDED UP PLACING SIXTH IN THE STATE FOR CROSS COUNTRY.
SO THAT WAS COOL. WE'VE HAD A LOT OF STUDENTS MAKE IT TO STATE THIS YEAR WHICH HAS BEEN REALLY EXCITING BECAUSE WE DO A LITTLE STATE WALK FOR THEM AND JUST GET TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO THEM. WE HAD ANOTHER STUDENT MAKE IT TO STATE IN WRESTLING, ANDREW GRAY PLAYS SECOND, WHICH WAS ALSO REALLY COOL. WE'VE HOSTED A LOT OF EVENTS THIS YEAR.
PRETTY BIG ONES. IN FEBRUARY, WE HOSTED THE WIA CHEER COMPETITION, WHICH LED WITH TONS OF TEAMS BEING AT OUR SCHOOL AND HUNDREDS MORE PEOPLE COMING TO WATCH THEIR TEAMS PARTICIPATE. IT WAS COOL TO SEE THE SCHOOL'S PARTICIPATION THOUGH.
SO IT WAS COOL TO SEE OUR STUDENTS STEP UP AND BE ABLE TO HELP WITH THAT. FROM THAT COMPETITION, OUR CHEER TEAM ACTUALLY MADE IT TO NATIONALS. AND IT'S THE FIRST TIME IN BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY THAT THAT HAS HAPPENED. SO THAT WAS VERY EXCITING FOR THOSE GIRLS. I KNOW THEY WERE ALL SUPER EXCITED TO GET TO LIKE PICK OUT OUTFITS AND GO DOWN TO, I BELIEVE IT WAS FLORIDA THEY WENT TO FOR THEIR CHEER NATIONALS, WHICH WAS VERY FUN TO SEE. WE DID A WILD WEST DANCE THAT HAPPENED ON MARCH 14TH.
WE HAD A LOT OF STUDENTS GO TO THAT AND SAY THAT THAT WAS PRETTY FUN.
BACK TO SPORTS. THERE WAS A LOT OF SPORTS. EVERY SINGLE TIME I WAS LIKE, HEY, WHAT SHOULD I TALK ABOUT? THEY WERE LIKE, THIS SPORT DID THIS AND THIS SPORT DID THAT, WHICH WAS COOL TO SEE. OUR TRACK TEAM HOSTED ANOTHER KIND OF BIG MEET.
IT WAS 20 TEAMS THAT CAME TO OUR SCHOOL ON MARCH 28TH.
OUR GROUNDS AND MAINTENANCE TEAM DID AN AMAZING JOB LIKE SETTING UP OUR SCHOOL FOR THAT. EVERYTHING LOOKED SO NICE AND BEAUTIFUL, AND WE GOT SO MANY COMPLIMENTS FROM A TON OF DIFFERENT VISITING TEAMS THAT OUR SCHOOL WAS JUST VERY NEAT AND LOOKED NICE, WHICH WAS VERY COOL TO SEE.
MORE RECENTLY OUR WE HAD A STUDENT, A REPRESENTATIVE IN OUR ASB CLASS.
SO TOGETHER HER AND SOME STUDENTS STAY AFTER SCHOOL.
I'M. I KNOW THEY STAYED SO MANY HOURS FILLING HUNDREDS OF EASTER EGGS.
AND ON APRIL 3RD, WE HAD A GROUP OF STUDENTS, BOTH ASB AND JUST GENERAL STUDENT BODY, HIDE THESE EASTER EGGS ALL OVER THE PRESCHOOLERS PLAYGROUND AND THEY GOT TO DECORATE BUNNY EARS AND THEN THEY GOT TO GO HUNT ALL THESE EGGS.
AND I WAS A PART OF THAT. IT WAS REALLY FUN TO SEE JUST THE PRESCHOOLERS GET SO EXCITED.
THERE WAS A COUPLE SPARKLY EGGS WHICH WERE LIKE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR DAY.

WHICH IS VERY, VERY COOL TO SEE. AND OUR BOYS SOCCER AND GIRLS SOFTBALL ARE BOTH PLAYING CURRENTLY AND DOING VERY WELL.THERE WAS ONLY 125 STUDENTS SELECTED IN THE NATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THAT.
IT WAS LORD KING, NATHAN DAVIS AND HENRY RICHARDS, AND ALL THREE OF THOSE STUDENTS WILL GET AN ALL EXPENSE PAID TRIP TO PURDUE UNIVERSITY, AND THEY'LL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN THEIR FAA PILOT CERTIFICATE.
AND TO DATE, ONLY 17 BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE HAD THIS HONOR.
SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT'S REALLY COOL TO GET TO SEE. THAT'S VERY COOL. YEAH. AND ALL THREE OF THOSE STUDENTS ARE SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THIS. LIKE, IT'S SO COOL GETTING TO HEAR THEM TALK ABOUT IT BECAUSE THEY'RE JUST ECSTATIC, WHICH I WOULD BE TOO. I DON'T BLAME THEM. WE HAVE OUR ADVANCED CULINARY CLASS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND RIGHT NOW THEY'RE WORKING ON PREPARING FOOD THAT HAS BEEN DONATED TO OUR FOOD PANTRY BECAUSE WE GET DONATED A LOT OF BULK ITEMS, WHICH IS GREAT, BUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING RIGHT NOW IS THEY'RE TAKING THOSE ITEMS AND THEY'RE PREPARING THEM INTO MORE LIKE PORTION SIZED MEALS THAT CAN THEN BE HANDED OUT TO STUDENTS WHO MAY BE NEEDING THEM. BUT THAT'S COOL TO SEE ONE OF OUR CLASSES GETTING TO WORK ON THAT AND LIKE KIND OF TAKE WHAT'S BEEN GIVEN TO US AND TURN IT INTO SOMETHING THAT WILL GO TO A LOT OF STUDENTS AND BE HELPFUL FOR THAT. THEY'RE ALSO WORKING ON PROTOTYPING AND DESIGNING THE MENU FOR AN UPCOMING CTE MEETING, AND THEY WERE VERY EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT THAT, ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS THEY'RE TRYING TO NARROW DOWN, LIKE LOGISTICS AND DESSERTS AND ALL THIS STUFF. THEY WERE VERY EXCITED TO TALK TO ME ABOUT THAT.
OUR CHOIR ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY, THEY'RE DOING SPOTLIGHT SOLO SHOWS, WHICH IS REALLY COOL BECAUSE A LOT OF THEIR SINGERS ARE HAVE BEEN PREPARING SONGS FOR A WHILE. LIKE I HAVE A COUPLE OF FRIENDS IN CHOIR AND THEY'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS FOR LIKE MONTHS. THEY'VE BEEN SO EXCITED TO GET TO PREPARE A SHOW, TO HAVE A SOLO MOMENT TO JUST PERFORM. SO IT'LL BE REALLY COOL TO SEE.
OUR BAND IS TRAVELING TO CALIFORNIA THIS WEEKEND TO PERFORM IN A FESTIVAL IN SANTA CLARA.
THEY ALSO WERE VERY EXCITED TO NOTE THAT THEY WILL BE GOING ON RIDES AT SANTA MONICA PIER AFTER.
THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT ALL OF THEM. THEY'RE LIKE, YEAH, YEAH, THE FESTIVAL. AND THEY'RE LIKE, BUT ALSO THE RIDES. THEY'RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT. OUR JAZZ BAND IS GOING TO IDAHO NEXT WEEKEND AND THEY'RE GOING TO BE PERFORMING AT A FESTIVAL, UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO, WHICH IS COOL TO SEE LIKE ALL OUR BANDS AND LIKE SPORTS TRAVEL TO ALL THESE PLACES TO GET TO YEAH, IT'S A REALLY COOL EXPERIENCE. AND THIS YEAR, INSTEAD OF BENEFITING A FAMILY LIKE WE HAVE IN THE PAST, LIKE I KNOW WE'VE CAME AND TALKED TO YOU GUYS ABOUT THIS A COUPLE YEARS PRIOR, BUT THIS YEAR IT'LL BE BENEFITING THE CHELSEA HICKS FOUNDATION, WHO RECENTLY WE HAD A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THEIR FOUNDATION COME AND PRESENT TO OUR ASB CLASS ABOUT THEIR CHELSEA'S CLOSET PROGRAM, WHICH BASICALLY THEY BUY COSTUMES AND ACTIVITIES AND ALL THIS STUFF TO GO BRING TO KIDS IN THE HOSPITAL WHO MIGHT NOT GET A LOT OF FUN AND CHEERFUL EXPERIENCE.
SO THAT'LL BE REALLY FUN TO GET TO BENEFIT. AND THEY YEAH, IT'S A LOT OF AMAZING WORK THAT THEY DO.
THEY'RE DOING LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS AND IT'S HAPPENING IN MAY.

BUT THIS YEAR, LIKE OUR, ALL OF OUR PLAYS HAVE GOTTEN SO MUCH MORE ATTENDANCE, WHICH HAS BEEN SO COOL TO WATCH BECAUSE IT MAKES THE DRAMA KIDS SO HAPPY TO SEE BECAUSE THEY PUT A LOT OF EFFORT INTO THESE SHOWS. LIKE THE CURRENT SET FOR LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS HAS BEEN BUILT ON THE STAGE, AND LIKE, THEY'VE BEEN WORKING ON IT AND SLOWLY ADDING TO IT, AND IT'S SO COOL TO SEE THAT ALL THAT HARD WORK PAYS OFF. AND THEY DO GET A LOT OF PEOPLE TO COME WATCH IT, WHICH IS REALLY COOL. OUR PROM IS ALSO NEXT MONTH.
THERE WAS IT'S ALWAYS SO FUNNY WHEN PROM GETS CLOSER, SEEING ALL THE STUDENTS TRY TO GUESS WHAT THE THEME IS. AND THEN WHEN WE ANNOUNCE IT, IT'S JUST REALLY FUN TO SEE. AND LAST, LIKE WE STILL HAVE OUR THRIFT STORE GOING.
EVERYTHING IS DONATED TO US FROM JUST THE COMMUNITY AND THEN WE SELL IT FOR A DOLLAR.
AND THEN ALL THOSE PROCEEDS GO DIRECTLY BACK INTO OUR PRIZE CLOSET, WHICH IS WHERE STUDENTS CAN PICK ITEMS FROM WHEN THEY'RE RECOGNIZED FOR BEING RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, AND ENGAGED. SO THEY GET LITTLE CARDS AND THEN CARDS GET DRAWN.

THEY INVITED ME THERE TO FOCUS ON LITERACY AND FAITH, AND THE CONVERSATION CENTERED ON THE NATIONAL LITERACY CRISIS. AND WHILE I WAS HONORED TO BE THERE AND PART OF THAT CONVERSATION, ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT WAS COMING BACK HERE TO THE BEAUTIFUL PACIFIC NORTHWEST TO MAKE A LASTING IMPACT HERE. RIGHT HERE IN BATTLE GROUND, WHERE MY FAMILY HAS BEEN FOR SIX GENERATIONS FROM PROUD PRAIRIE GRADUATE. THIS IS A COMMUNITY FULL OF CARING PEOPLE, JUST LIKE EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM.
EACH OF YOU. THIS COMMUNITY IS FULL OF CARING PEOPLE AND THROUGH A CONNECTION WITH MICHAEL MICHOD, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH THE DISTRICT LEADERS, OUR SUPERINTENDENT, VICE SUPERINTENDENT, CURRICULUM LEADERS, AND MANY OTHERS. BUT WHAT STOOD OUT IMMEDIATELY WAS THIS THAT THEY WERE READY.
AND SO ARE WE AT READ NORTHWEST. BECAUSE WHEN CHILDREN BECOME CONFIDENT READERS EARLY ON, SOMETHING POWERFUL HAPPENS. THEY BEGIN TO FEEL CAPABLE, HOPEFUL, AND ENGAGED.
AND OVER TIME, THAT CONFIDENCE BUILDS STRONGER COMMUNITIES, COMMUNITIES WITH LESS CRIME, LESS HOMELESSNESS, AND MORE RESILIENT FUTURES. THAT'S THE LONG GAME FOR LITERACY.
THIS NEXT YEAR, WE ARE ADDING TWO MORE BATTLE GROUND PRIMARY SCHOOLS.
SO WE WILL BE IN A TOTAL OF SIX SCHOOLS THIS NEXT YEAR.
AND IN ALL OF CLARK COUNTY, WE'RE ONLY ADDING SIX.
WE WILL BE DOING A BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL VOLUNTEER TRAINING FOR ALL OF THE, FOR ALL THE VOLUNTEERS TOGETHER TO IMPLEMENT WHAT WE ARE CALLING TAKE FIVE. AND THIS IS SIMPLE, BUT ADDED TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, WHAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS DOING AND OUR WEEKLY SESSIONS, WE WILL TOGETHER MAKE AN IMPACT AND MOVE THAT NEEDLE.
IT'S A GAME. WE'RE CALLING IT A GAME. BUT OF COURSE IT'S LEARNING.
THEY'LL GO THROUGH WHICHEVER SIGHT WORD LIST WE DECIDE TO USE OR WHATEVER ONE THEY WANT TO USE.

THEY BECOME CONSISTENT, CARING PRESENCE IN A CHILD'S LIFE, SOMEONE WHO SHOWS UP JUST FOR THEM WITH A SMILE, WITH ENCOURAGEMENT, AND AN EAR TO LISTEN. THAT CONSISTENCY MATTERS MORE THAN WE CAN MEASURE.
AND WHEN TRADITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES LIKE FIELD TRIPS AREN'T ALWAYS POSSIBLE.
WE ASKED, WELL, HOW DO WE BRING THOSE EXPERIENCES BACK INTO THE SCHOOLS? SO WE CAME UP WITH AN INNOVATIVE WAY AND WE CREATED WHAT'S CALLED THE CLARK COUNTY COMMUNITY LITERACY PROJECT.
AND ONE OF OUR FIRST ONES IS THROUGH LITERACY AND ARTS EXPERIENCE.
IT'S A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.
AND I GAVE YOU GUYS SOME BOOKS UP THERE, YOU CAN SEE THEM, BUT THE STUDENTS IN THE ENTIRE SCHOOL.
AND SO THE MUSIC TEACHERS ARE GOING TO READ THIS.
WE GAVE, WE BOUGHT BOOKS. ACTUALLY, THE BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION BOUGHT THE BOOKS.
VERY THANKFUL FOR THAT. BUT EACH TEACHER GETS A BOOK AND ALL THIS GRADES AT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL.
SO NOW WE'RE NOT FOCUSED, JUST OUR FIRST TO THIRD.
BUT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL GETS THIS EXPERIENCE. SO THEY READ THE THEMED WHICH CREATES.
AND SO IT CONNECTS STORIES TO MUSIC, AND IT SHOWS STUDENTS THAT WORLD CLASS ART EXPERIENCE EXISTS RIGHT HERE IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITY. NOT ON TECHNOLOGY WHERE THEY SEE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD, BUT THEY GET TO COME AND THEY GET TO HAVE THE LIVE EXPERIENCE.
AND THIS YEAR IN BATTLE GROUND, SO FOUR OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WILL GET THIS EXPERIENCE.
SO OVER 2000 STUDENTS THE VSO WILL ALSO BE PROVIDING COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS TO THE STUDENTS ADMINISTRATION AND THE PARENTS TO GET TO GO TO ACTUAL VSO CONCERT ALSO.
A FEW YEARS AGO, I WAS, I HAD ONE OF MY READING BUDDIES AND I GOT TO TAKE HER AND HER FAMILY TO THE VANCOUVER SYMPHONY EVENT, AND THEN SHE ENDED UP DECIDING TO GO TO THE VANCOUVER ARTS.
THERE WAS A PROGRAM AND I, AND IT WAS IN FOURTH GRADE.
AND I SAID TO HER, TRY IT BECAUSE WE JUST GET TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO TRY THINGS.
THERE WAS AN AFTER SCHOOL BASKETBALL PROGRAM AND I'M LIKE, TRY IT.
WHY NOT? LIKE GO ENJOY IT? WHO CARES IF YOU LIKE IT OR NOT? GO TRY IT. AND THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT WE GET TO DO AS VOLUNTEERS.
WE GET TO ENCOURAGE, WE GET TO BECAUSE 50% OF KIDS, UNFORTUNATELY DON'T HAVE THAT PERSON SHOWING UP FOR THEM, THOSE AMAZING COACHES, THOSE AMAZING PEOPLE THAT COME ALONGSIDE THEM.
SO THESE LITTLE ONES GET SOMEONE THAT'S THEIR PERSON FOR THE YEAR.

SO EVERY IEP TEAM MAKES GOALS THAT'S, THAT ARE MEASURED AND REPORTED ON ANNUALLY, BI-ANNUALLY WITH THE TEAM. AND SO THEY ABSOLUTELY WILL AND CAN SHOW PROGRESS ON ALL ANY KIND OF ASSESSMENT.

AND THE THREE POINTS AND STRATEGIES THAT THEY DID WAS PROACTIVE ENGAGEMENT, POSITIVE MESSAGING AND RATIONAL APPROACH. AND THEY FOUND THAT BY DOING THESE THREE THINGS THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF THEIR CHRONIC ATTENDANCE PROBLEMS DIMINISHED, THEY REDUCED THEIR RATES ACROSS ACTUALLY SOME OTHER DISTRICTS HAVE DONE THIS ALSO. AND THEY FOUND THAT THE CHRONIC ABSENCE RATES ACROSS 146 DISTRICTS THAT WERE STUDIED, WHO USED THESE STRATEGIES. IT WAS SIGNIFICANT CHANGES.
THEY SHIFT AWAY FROM PUNITIVE MEASURES TO EARLY, FREQUENT AND POSITIVE FAMILY COMMUNICATION.
AND WE ALL KNOW THAT FAMILIES ARE THE CENTER OF A STUDENT'S LIFE.

I'VE GONE BEFORE MANY YEARS WITH B.J., AND THIS ONE JUST SEEMED REALLY ON LIKE THE RIGHT TRACK FOR MOST THINGS.

IS WHAT THE REDUCTION IS. AND THAT REALLY IS MORE RELATED TO THE LEGISLATORS WORK, NOT, NOT OUR LEVY BECAUSE WE WERE, WE WERE FUNDED THROUGH APPORTIONMENT THAT CHANGED EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT RECOVERY. WE'RE LOOKING AT SOME REDUCTIONS AT HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT RECOVERY.
WE WILL STILL HAVE THE PROGRAM, BUT IT WILL BE REDUCED.
WE'RE LOOKING AT CHANGES TO THE WAY IN WHICH WE IMPLEMENT OUR LIBRARIES.

THEY BUILT SMALL CARS THAT ARE POWERED BY SOLAR PANELS AND BATTERIES.
AND THE CAM TEAMS TOOK HOME SECOND AND FOURTH PLACE FINISHES IN THE ACTUAL SOLAR CAR RACE.
AND THEY ALSO EARNED SECOND PLACE IN THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PRESENTATION.
SO KUDOS TO THEM FOR THAT. AND THEN TALKING A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

PORTION OF THE BUDGET BY USING A POPULAR LOCAL VOTE.
RESIDENTS DO NOT GET TO VOTE IN UTAH ON WHETHER THEY ARE GOING TO FUND BASIC OPERATIONS, BECAUSE THAT IS NOT A LEGITIMATE QUESTION, GIVEN THE CONSTITUTIONAL OBLIGATION FOR A STATE TO FULLY FUND EDUCATION.
THE WAY THE RATE OF LOCAL OPERATIONS LEVY IS DETERMINED IN UTAH AND OTHER PLACES IS THAT THE LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD FOR THE DISTRICT WILL EXAMINE THE BUDGET, EXAMINE PROPERTY VALUES AND DETERMINE WHAT LEVEL OF TAXATION NEEDS TO BE ASSESSED IN ORDER TO COMPLETELY FUND THE SCHOOLS IN THAT DISTRICT.
THE BOARD, NOT THE GENERAL POPULATION, DECIDES EVERY DISTRICT GETS A BASIC CHUNK FROM THE STATE.
WHY DOESN'T THE STATE JUST DETERMINE AN AMOUNT TO FULLY FUND THE SCHOOLS? WHY DO STATES CHOOSE TO DETERMINE THE RATE AT THE LOCAL LEVEL? BECAUSE THERE IS SUCH A VARIETY IN PROPERTY VALUES, BECAUSE THERE ARE DIFFERENT NEEDS ACROSS SCHOOL DISTRICTS, BECAUSE THERE ARE DIFFERENT DESIRES WITHIN A COMMUNITY AS IT RELATES TO THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.
WITHIN SYSTEMS LIKE THE ONE IN UTAH, THE SCHOOL BOARD, LOCALLY ELECTED OFFICIALS ENTRUSTED WITH THE CARE AND KEEPING OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS MAKES THAT DECISION ABOUT HOW TO FINISH THE MARGINS OF FUNDING USING AN OPERATIONS LEVY BASED ON LOCAL FACTORS.
THIS SYSTEM CREATES STABILITY, PREDICTABILITY, AND REDUCES STRESS AND ANXIETY WITHIN A SYSTEM UNDER SUCH A MODEL AS IS USED IN UTAH, ENROLLMENT DRIVES STAFFING, NOT A BUDGET CRISIS.
I CAN GET BEHIND THIS DEMAND TO FULLY FUND ANY STATE MANDATES OR MAKE THEM OPTIONAL, IF NOT FUNDED.
THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT A THING MATTERS VERY MUCH.

WHEN NETWORK EQUIPMENT BECOMES OBSOLETE, IT STOPS GETTING SECURITY PATCHES.
