LONGER RECESS AND MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS. MY EXPERIENCES ARE WALKING TO THE STREAM, LOOKING AT MICROORGANISMS, RED AND GREEN GAMES, AND RED AND BLUE GAMES. AND KIDS GET TO PLAY AGAINST EACH OTHER AND THE STAFF SCHOOL. SCHOOL WIDE FUN BEFORE BREAKS. PLEASANT VALLEY IS A NICE, IT'S NICE TO GO TO A NICE TO GO TO SCHOOL, BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF TEACHERS THAT ARE THERE FOR YOU.

THANK YOU. GO AHEAD. HI, MY NAME IS FIONA. I AM A FIFTH GRADER AT PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL. WHAT I LIKE ABOUT PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL IS THAT IT'S AN INCLUSIVE HOME FOR EVERYBODY. EVERYBODY IS ALLOWED, NO MATTER THEIR RACE OR THEIR OPINIONS AND POSTERS THROUGHOUT THE HALLS AND IN CLASSROOMS SHOW THIS. MORE THINGS THAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS SCHOOL IS THAT IT HAS A LIBRARY WITH TONS OF WONDERFUL BOOKS.

IT HAS A BAND AND IT IS A TOBACCO AND DRUG FREE SCHOOL.

WE ALSO MADE SUNDIALS IN CLASS, WHICH I THINK WAS REALLY COOL THAT I WANT TO SHOW YOU GUYS.

AND WHAT I WISH WAS DIFFERENT IS THAT WE HAD MORE AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES LIKE TRACK CHESS CLUB AND DRAMA CLUB.

I ALSO WISH WE HAD A CAFETERIA, MORE HANDS ON ACTIVITIES, A BETTER SYSTEM FOR LETTING CLASSES SLASH STUDENTS OUT.

IT'S ALSO SAD THAT THE LEVY DIDN'T PASS, ESPECIALLY NOW THAT THINGS AREN'T AS FREE AS BEFORE.

WHAT I WANT THE SCHOOL BOARD TO KNOW IS THAT WE HAVE A PLEASANT VALLEY DREAM TEAM, WHICH IS ALL ABOUT DRUG PREVENTION.

WE ALSO HAVE MULTIPLE CLASSES IN HEALTH THAT TEACH ABOUT DRUG PREVENTION.

THIS IS HELPFUL BECAUSE IT MAKES THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.

TEACHERS AT PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL ARE KIND, POSITIVE, AND BELIEVE IN YOU.

THEY ALSO EXPECT THE BEST FROM ALL STUDENTS. HOW DO I SHOW THIS? SO IF PRETEND THIS FLASHLIGHT IS THE SUN, IF YOU SHINE IT ONTO THE TOOTHPICK THAT'S LINED UP AGAINST A PIECE OF PAPER THAT HAS NUMBERS ON IT, IT SHOWS THE TIME DEPENDING ON WHERE THE SUN IS.

WE DID THIS AT TWO TOO IN THE AFTERNOON. AND IT ACTUALLY WE POINTED IT UP AGAINST THE SUN AND IT SHOWED TWO ON THE DIAL.

DID YOU DO IT AS PART OF A CLASS? DID YOU DO IT AS PART OF A CLASS? YES. WHICH CLASS? SCIENCE. VERY COOL. YOU CAN DO A WALK AROUND SHOW.

THINGS I DISLIKE ABOUT PVM IS NOT HAVING SPORTS, DEALING OF DRAMA AMONGST MY FRIENDS, AND NOT HAVING A LUNCHROOM.

THINGS THAT HAVE CHANGED AT PVM SINCE MY SIXTH GRADE YEAR WOULD BE PHYSICAL FIGHTS, LESS HARASSMENT BASED ON RACE AND DISABILITY, AND THE PATRIOT STORE. ONE THING I HOPE TO REMEMBER ABOUT THIS SCHOOL IS HOW WELL I WAS TREATED BY THE COMMUNITY.

ONE THING I HOPE YOU GUYS REMEMBER IS HOW MUCH PROGRESS THE SCHOOL HAS MADE IN SOCIAL SKILLS AND LEARNING.

AND WHOEVER WINS WINS OBVIOUSLY. AND THEN TOWARDS THE END, IT'S USUALLY STAFF AGAINST STUDENTS OR STAFF AGAINST STAFF, AND IT'S BASICALLY JUST PLAYING VOLLEYBALL AGAINST EACH OTHER AND WHICHEVER SIDE WINS.

SO BLUE WINS. BLUE WINS. IF RED WINS THEN RED WINS.

OH YEAH. AND HALF THE SCHOOL DRESSES UP AS RED AND THEN HALF THE SCHOOL DRESSES UP AS BLUE.

AND THEN THEY CHEER FOR THOSE TEAMS THAT CORRESPOND WITH THE COLOR.

IS THAT THE IDEA? YEAH. YES. IT'S FUN. FUN? YEAH.

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT FOR US THIS EVENING? I GUESS WE'LL KIND OF GO OFF OF THE STUDENTS THAT YOU GUYS HEARD FROM.

SO LAST WEEK ON WEDNESDAY, WE WENT AND VISITED THE SCHOOL, ACTUALLY, LIKE WE HAVE BEEN DOING WITH OUR OTHER MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND WHAT WE'RE PLANNING TO DO WITH OUR HIGH SCHOOLS AND ALLEYS AS WELL. AND AS YOU CAN HEAR, WITH THE GOOD ALSO COMES BAD.

AND THE THINGS THAT THEY LOVE ALSO COMES WITH THINGS THAT THEY MISS.

AND SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT CAME TO OUR ATTENTION WERE SOME CONCERNS ABOUT BUSSING, WHICH REALLY KIND OF SURPRISED US JUST BECAUSE A LOT OF THE KIDS WERE BRINGING UP THE SITUATION ABOUT HOW THERE'S NOT THERE'S A LOT OF CUSSING ON THE BUSSES.

THERE'S A LOT OF STUDENTS WHO ARE MAKING RIDES ON THE BUSSES.

AND TO SOMEBODY THAT MIGHT SEEM LIKE A REGULAR MIDDLE SCHOOL THING, BUT IN IN REALITY, THOSE FIFTH GRADERS ARE ON THOSE BUSSES SHOULDN'T BE HEARING THOSE THINGS. BUT AGAIN, IT'S SO MANY STUDENTS FOR A BUS DRIVER TO TAKE CARE OF.

IT'S KIDS WHO ARE SITTING IN ONE SEAT. A STUDENT TOLD US THAT THREE KIDS ARE SITTING ON IT, INSTEAD OF JUST TWO KIDS WITH FULL SPACE, AND ON TOP OF THAT, THEY HAVE THEIR INSTRUMENTS, THEY HAVE THEIR BACKPACKS, THEY HAVE OTHER NECESSITIES THAT THEY NEED IF THEY DO OTHER ACTIVITIES AT SCHOOL.

SO IT'S REALLY DIFFICULT FOR THESE KIDS TO FIND A WAY TO GET TO SCHOOL CALMLY AND ALSO GET BACK TO SCHOOL BACK HOME CALMLY.

A LOT OF THESE KIDS WAKE UP EARLY, AND THEN THEY'RE JUST HEARING ALL THESE NOISES AND ALL THESE BAD WORDS, AND A LOT OF FIFTH GRADERS, INSTEAD OF, YOU MIGHT THINK, OH, THESE FIFTH GRADERS WANT TO BE COOL, BUT IN REALITY, THEY DON'T WANT TO HEAR THOSE THINGS ON THE BUSSES.

THEY DON'T WANT TO HAVE BAD REPRESENTATION, REPRESENTATION OF THEIR SCHOOL.

AND THAT WAS JUST SOMETHING THAT THEY ALSO BROUGHT UP TO OUR CONCERN. SO.

YEAH, THAT WAS A BIG SORRY. SORRY. THAT WAS LIKE A BIG PROBLEM.

ALSO THERE'S THERE'S OBVIOUSLY MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS. RIGHT.

LIKE ONE OF THE MAIN THINGS WE WOULD HEAR IS THAT, LIKE WITHOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS COMING TO SCHOOL IS JUST LIKE, IT'S A BORE. THERE'S NO REASON TO COME TO SCHOOL. THERE'S NO REASON TO TRY TO KEEP YOUR GRADES UP BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO. AT THE END OF THE DAY, THERE'S NOTHING. THERE'S NO JOY IN SCHOOL FOR THEM. SO THEY FEEL LIKE IT'S ALMOST LIKE A CHORE AND THAT THEY HAVE NOTHING TO TRY FOR.

AND THE BUSSES AS WELL. LIKE ONE OF THE KIDS CAME UP WITH THE IDEA.

THEY'RE LIKE, I WISH WE HAD DIFFERENT BUSSES FOR SEVENTH AND EIGHTH AND THEN FIFTH AND SIXTH TO SEPARATE BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH ALL THESE.

LIKE IT'S JUST REALLY PROFANE. AND HEARING THAT COME FROM FIFTH GRADERS TOO, IT JUST IT WASN'T GREAT.

BUT THERE'S ALSO THE GOOD, RIGHT? THEY SAID THAT PLEASANT VALLEY WAS INCLUSIVE.

THEY SAID THAT THE STAFF WAS NICE. THEY MADE GOOD CONNECTIONS.

THEY LIKED THEIR TEACHERS. AND YEAH, WE DID. THEY WE HAD ABOUT LIKE, I THINK IT WAS 30 TO 40 OF THE SURVEY SUBMISSIONS.

AND MAIN PROBLEM WITH, I MEAN, A GOOD THING WAS FRIEND OPPORTUNITIES OR BAD THINGS, SORRY.

SCHOOL SPORTS AND LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES.

THOSE WERE THE TOP THREE RATED THINGS THAT THEY THOUGHT OF.

BUT YEAH, THAT'S ALL I HAVE AGAIN. THESE STUDENTS SEE THESE FROM THE LEVY FAILURE.

A LOT OF STUDENTS ARE BEING AFFECTED IN. SOME PARENTS MIGHT NOT THINK THEY KNOW THESE THINGS, BUT BASED ON OUR SURVEYS, A LOT OF KIDS KNOW THAT BECAUSE OF THE LEVY FAILURE, THESE THINGS ARE TAKEN AWAY.

AND BECAUSE OF THIS, THEY DON'T HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL.

AND SO I JUST WANT EVERYBODY TO KIND OF THINK ABOUT THAT, THINK ABOUT THE REASON WHY YOUR KID GOES TO SCHOOL AND THE REASON WHY THEIR FRIENDS GO TO SCHOOL AND WHAT THEY'RE LACKING AND WHAT THEY NEED SUPPORT IN.

SO THAT'S FROM PLEASANT VALLEY. BUT I ALSO HAVE SOME IMPORTANT EVENTS COMING UP AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.

I JUST WANT TO BRING UP WINTER CARNIVAL IS DECEMBER 13TH FROM 11 TO 2 P.M.

AND THEN WE'RE ALSO DOING A TOY DRIVE, WHICH IS TILL DECEMBER 10TH, WHERE YOU CAN DROP OFF ANY UNUSED NEW TOYS AND TO THE MAIN OFFICE. AND THEN WHAT WE'RE KIND OF DOING A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY IS BECAUSE WE WANT A LOT OF KIDS TO KIND OF BRING TOYS, BECAUSE ALL THE TOYS THAT WE GET, WE USE AT THE WINTER CARNIVAL, AND EVERY KID WHO COMES TO THE WINTER CARNIVAL GETS TO PICK OUT A TOY.

TAKE IT HOME FOR FREE. WRAP IT UP AND JUST HAVE SOMETHING UNDER THEIR CHRISTMAS TREE.

AND SO WHAT WE'RE DOING FOR STUDENTS TO KIND OF DONATE MORE TOYS IS SOME OF OUR STAFF VOLUNTEERED TO DO LITTLE,

A LITTLE CONTEST. SO LEVINE AND WATTS HAVE A BOX.

QUIGGLE AND SHARP HAVE A BOX. MUCK HAS A BOX, AND SOOKS HAS A BOX.

AND EACH OF THEM, IF THEIR BOX GETS FILLED WITH THE MOST TOYS THEY HAVE TO DO WHAT'S IT CALLED? THEY HAVE TO DO SOMETHING THAT FROM GETTING THE MOST TOYS DONATED.

SO, FOR EXAMPLE, LEVINE AND WATTS HAVE TO GET SILLY STRINGED, QUIGGLE AND SHARP HAVE TO GET PIED IN THE FACE.

MUCK HAS TO GET AN ICE BUCKET AND SOOKS HAS TO GET DUCT TAPED TO THE WALL.

THAT'S THE ONE I WANT TO SEE. BUT I JUST KIND OF WANT TO KIND OF TALK ABOUT THE GOOD IN THIS AND JUST HOW AS A STUDENT, IT'S JUST SO GRATEFUL FOR ME TO SEE THAT STAFF CARES ABOUT THESE EVENTS THAT WE PUT ON, AND THEY'RE WILLING TO BE A PART OF IT, NO MATTER IF THEY GET MESSY OR GET THROWN WITH ICE COLD WATER, WHICH IS SOMETHING I WOULDN'T WANT TO DO.

SO THANKS TO MUCK FOR TAKING THAT. AND JUST TALKING ABOUT HOW COMMUNITY HAS ALSO BEEN TRYING TO HELP US WITH WINTER CARNIVAL.

PLEASANT VALLEY PTO IS WILLING TO LET US USE SOME OF THEIR CARNIVAL GAMES THAT THEY USE AT THEIR OWN CARNIVAL THAT THEY PUT UP. AND BOOSTERS AT OUR SCHOOL ARE HELPING US MAKE PANCAKES FOR FREE.

SO AT WINTER CARNIVAL, OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE EVERYTHING FREE FOR ANY STUDENT WHO WALKS INTO THAT TO OUR BUILDING.

SO GAMES ARE FREE, TOYS AND GIFTS ARE FREE. FOOD IS FREE, SO WE GIVE OUT PANCAKES.

SOME OF OUR STUDENTS WANT TO MAKE POPCORN FOR THE EVENT TOO.

SO WE'RE ADDING THAT TO THE LIST. WE MAKE HOT CHOCOLATE AND JUST ALL THIS FUN STUFF JUST TO MAKE IT A WARM HEARTED EVENT FOR EVERYBODY.

SO, AND THEN MY LAST THING IS WE HAVE A DOUBLE HEADER COMING UP AGAINST BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME ON DECEMBER 2ND.

AND OUR CHEER TEAM AND OUR BASKETBALL TEAM WANTED TO BRING BACK SOME RIVALRY SHIRTS.

SO WE'RE SELLING THOSE AT LUNCH. SO THAT'S GOING TO BE FUN.

THAT'S ALL FOR ME. SORRY. I'D LIKE AN INVITE TO THE PRINCIPAL'S RECEIVING THEIR DUE DILIGENCE AFTER YOU'VE RAISED.

I'M NOT SURE WHAT WE'RE GETTING UP TO NOW, BUT I THINK IT'S GETTING REALLY HIGH, WHICH IS GREAT.

LIKE, IT'S SO GREAT TO HAVE PEOPLE TO DONATE BLOOD. IT'S SO IMPORTANT. AND THEN ALSO WE'RE WE'RE DOING A GIFT GIVING THING TOO.

IT'S NOT IT'S NOT NEARLY AS GOOD AS THAT. I THINK IT'S JUST IT'S JUST LIKE A GIVING TREE.

LIKE JUST GIVE GIFTS IF YOU CAN. BUT FOR CAM, THERE'S NOT REALLY THAT MUCH GOING ON.

I HAVEN'T LOOKED INTO BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL THAT MUCH, SO THAT'S ALL I HAVE TODAY. OKAY.

THEY HAD ATTORNEYS THAT WENT INTO A LOT OF THE NEW LAWS THAT HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE.

AND IT WAS IT WAS A LOT TO TAKE IN, BUT IT WAS REALLY, REALLY THOROUGH.

WE HAD A WONDERFUL CHARTWELLS DINNER WHICH WAS JUST DELICIOUS AND REALLY ENJOYABLE.

I THINK WE'RE ON THE 35TH FLOOR SO WE COULD LOOK OUT AND SEE SEATTLE AT NIGHT WITH ALL THE LIGHTS, WHICH WAS SUPER COOL. SORRY NOT TO MAKE ANYBODY ELSE JEALOUS [LAUGHS].

IT WAS REALLY FUN, THOUGH. REALLY GOOD FOOD. EXCUSE ME.

I TOOK A COUPLE CLASSES ON LEADING DURING TURBULENT TIMES.

AND IT WAS REALLY INSPIRING. THEY TALKED ABOUT THE WORLD BEING LOOKING AT THE WORLD FROM THE INSIDE OUT AND SEEKING PERSPECTIVES, EMBRACING AND HUMILITY AND CULTIVATING TRUST.

IT WAS JUST REALLY GOOD. THE GENERAL SESSIONS WERE INSPIRING.

I THINK THE, THE MAIN, MEAN, AT LEAST WHAT I RECEIVED FROM IT WAS THAT ALL STUDENTS CAN LEARN.

THAT'S REALLY WHAT I GOT FROM IT, IS THAT THERE'S REALLY NO LIMIT TO WHAT STUDENTS CAN ACHIEVE IF THEY'RE GIVEN THE TOOLS.

SO IT WAS WONDERFUL. HAD A GREAT TIME. GOT TO KNOW OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS.

SO THAT WAS REALLY FUN. GOT TO KNOW THEIR THEIR IDEAS, THEIR SUGGESTIONS, THEIR THEIR PERSPECTIVES.

AND I MADE A BUNCH OF FRIENDS TALK TO A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT STUDENT REPS FROM DIFFERENT AREAS.

AND THEN YOU MIGHT THINK LIKE, OH, THESE STUDENTS ARE JUST GOING TO GO AND JUST TALK ABOUT DRAMA AND STUFF LIKE THAT.

EVERY TIME WE TALKED, IT WAS A CONVERSATION ABOUT OUR BOARDS, BUT IN THE MOST LIKE KNOWLEDGEABLE WAY WHERE WE LEARN FROM EACH OTHER'S BOARDS.

WE LEARNED WHAT OUR BOARDS ARE DOING GOOD, WHAT OUR BOARDS ARE DOING BAD, WHAT BOARDS DON'T EVEN HAVE STUDENT REPS, AND WHAT THEY'RE DOING TO TRY AND IMPLEMENT STUDENT REPS.

AND THEN ALSO LIKE HEARING FROM PEOPLE WHOSE STUDENT REPS AREN'T HEARD AS MUCH, AND THEN HEARING FROM STUDENT REPS WHO HAVE ARE ALWAYS HEARD, KIND OF LIKE ME AND TOBY. LIKE, I THINK THAT'S ONE THING THAT WAS REALLY HIGHLIGHTED IS LIKE THE GRATITUDE I HAVE FOR THE BOARD THAT I'M ON.

JUST BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MUCH SUPPORT FROM THE BOARD MEMBERS ON OUR BOARD OF LIKE, THE PROJECTS WE WANT TO MAKE AND ALL OF THAT, AND KIND OF LIKE GOING OFF LIKE I WENT TO A WIA BREAKOUT SESSION.

I JUST LEARNED, LIKE, HOW SPORTS AFFECT A STUDENT'S MENTALITY PREVENTION ON DRUGS AND ALCOHOL ABUSE, PREVENTION ON TEEN PREGNANCY AND JUST HEARING THOSE THINGS.

I DON'T THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW HOW MUCH A SPORT AFFECTS A STUDENT, BECAUSE IT AFFECTS THEM IN THE LONG RUN AT THE END OF THE DAY.

AND THEN I ALSO WENT TO ANOTHER SESSION, WHICH WAS ABOUT LIKE STUDENT VOICE AND WHAT THEY DO.

AND ME AND TOBY WENT TO THAT, AND WE ACTUALLY HAD A LOT IN SIMILARITIES WITH THE PEOPLE WHO WERE PRESENTING.

A LOT OF THEM DO BOARD TOURS AND BUT THEY JUST DO IT IN DIFFERENT WAYS JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE IN OLYMPIA AND THEY HAVE MORE STUDENT REPS. BUT JUST HEARING THAT, LIKE, WE'RE NOT THE ONLY ONES DOING THESE TYPES OF PROJECTS AND WORK JUST SHOWS THAT LIKE STUDENT ADVOCACY AND STUDENT VOICE IS LIKE BEING HIGHLIGHTED SO MUCH. AND THEN, LIKE THEY SAID, I DID SPEAK AT THE WAS THE CONFERENCE FIRST TIME SPEAKING IN FRONT OF A LOT OF PEOPLE.

DEFINITELY NERVOUS, DEFINITELY A LITTLE SCARY.

BUT IT'S AN UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT THAT I ALWAYS THINK IN MY HEAD.

AND THEN I HAD MY PARENTS THERE, AND I KNOW MY MOM WAS A PROUD MOM BACK THERE.

I COULD SEE HER, I COULD SEE HER, I COULD SEE MY DAD.

THEY WERE WAITING THERE 30 MINUTES BEFORE EARLY, SITTING THERE ALL PATIENTLY, JUST WAITING FOR ME TO SPEAK.

AND THEN AFTER I WAS DONE SPEAKING, WAITED PATIENTLY FOR ME TO COME OFF.

SO IT WAS JUST GREAT TO HAVE MY PARENTS THERE. SO YEAH.

AND WHEN YOU SAY A LOT, YOU MEAN A LOT. THAT GENERAL SESSION PROBABLY HAD 1000 PEOPLE IN THE ROOM WHEN YOU WERE EMCEEING.

I, I THINK THIS WAS MAYBE MY SIXTH WSSDA CONFERENCE AND BY FAR I THINK THEY DID THE BEST JOB PLANNING FOR THE VARIETY OF NEEDS THAT WERE THERE. THERE WERE SESSIONS FOR ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS, STUDENT REPS, BOARD MEMBERS, SPECIFICALLY BOARD PRESIDENTS, SPECIFICALLY SUPERINTENDENTS. IT WAS IT WAS FAR MORE VARIED THAN IT HAS BEEN.

AND I FELT LIKE IT REALLY PROVIDED SOME GREAT TRAINING.

THEY ALSO DID A GOOD JOB. I GAVE SOME FEEDBACK IN THE SURVEY THAT WE HAD, MAYBE THAT THEY WOULD PUT THEM LATER, BUT FOR OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS. THEY HAD. I FELT LIKE THEY HAD MORE TRAINING OF THE REQUIRED TRAININGS.

I JUST WISH THEY HAD PUT THEM A LITTLE LATER IN THE OFFERINGS BECAUSE THE REALLY DIFFICULT ONES TO GET IN ARE THE ONES THAT EVERYBODY WANTED APPEARED TO BE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CONFERENCE. AND TOWARDS THE END WERE THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE WERE JUST SO, SO ABOUT. I THINK IF THEY HAD PUT THE NEW BOARD MEMBER TRAININGS NEAR THE END, MORE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE PICKED UP THE MANDATORY TRAININGS EARLIER ON.

BUT FEEDBACK FOR THEM IN THE FUTURE. BUT BUT REALLY GREAT.

WE'VE GOT SOME PUBLIC RECORDS REQUEST TRAINING LEADING AS A BOARD CHAIR, USE OF PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURES.

AND IT WAS VERY IT WAS VERY GOOD. SOME OF IT WAS A BIT DRY, BUT IT WAS VERY NECESSARY AND GOOD LEARNING OVERALL.

I WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, I ATTENDED THE LAO LEGACY VETERANS DAY PARADE ON THE 11TH AND OUR, OUR JROTC WAS THERE AND BUT SPECIFICALLY JUST I FEEL IT'S IMPORTANT TO SHARE THERE WERE TWO CO GRAND MARSHALS THERE, AND IT WAS REALLY AN AMAZING THING.

I WILL MAKE A POINT OF ATTENDING IN THE FUTURE.

AND IT WAS A GREAT EVENT AND I THINK YEAH, I WOULD JUST LIKE TO DO MORE TO HONOR SOME OF OUR PEOPLE THAT ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR US AS A COUNTRY.

BUT THAT WAS A GREAT EVENT. JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, WE HAD OUR LEGISLATIVE FORUM WHERE THE SUPERINTENDENTS GAVE FEEDBACK TO OUR LEGISLATORS. I SPOKE ON UNDERFUNDED OR UNFUNDED MANDATES AND ASKED ASKED OUR LEGISLATORS TO LOOK AT THOSE, KNOWING THAT WE'RE GOING INTO A YEAR WHERE THERE'S NOT A LOT OF MONEY.

IT'S TRIED TO EXPLAIN THAT TIME AND MONEY ALSO COMES THROUGH THE FORM OF UNFUNDED MANDATES.

AND IF WE COULD TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE RECENT MANDATES AND MAYBE TWEAK THEM OR MAKE CHANGES TO THEM, THAT THAT WOULD ACTUALLY PROVIDE A GREAT DEAL OF RELIEF TO OUR SCHOOLS.

SPECIFICALLY, I TALKED ABOUT THE EXCISE TAX COST THAT WE WILL BE PAYING.

ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE WILL BE PAYING.

WE ANTICIPATE IT'LL COST US A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS AT LEAST.

AND CERTAINLY IF THEY WOULD TAKE A LOOK AT THAT, THAT THAT TAX IS A PRETTY SIGNIFICANT TAX ON OUR CONTRACTED SERVICES.

SO ASK THEM TO TAKE A LOOK AT THAT. ASK THEM TO ALSO TAKE A LOOK AT THE CONTRACTED TRANSPORTATION EMPLOYEE BENEFITS BILL.

THE BILL WAS INTENDED TO BE BE A PASS THROUGH THAT THE STATE WOULD SEND MONEY TO THE DISTRICTS, AND THAT WOULD HELP PAY FOR THE BENEFITS FOR OUR CONTRACTED TRANSPORTATION SERVICE.

AND FOR US IN THE 26-27 SCHOOL YEAR, THAT WILL BE A $2 MILLION HIT UNLESS THEY FIX THAT IN THIS LEGISLATIVE SESSION.

SO THAT'S A BIT OF A BIG DEAL FOR US. AND THE OTHER THING THAT I SPOKE ABOUT WAS OUR SUBSTITUTE COSTS IN ACROSS THE STATE, EVERY SINGLE DISTRICT HAS OUR ONLY FUNDED FOR FOUR DAYS FOR ONLY CERTIFICATED STAFF.

SO ONLY ONLY TEACHERS, ONLY CERTIFICATED STAFF THAT ARE FUNDED, WE RECEIVE MONEY FOR.

AND SO WE EVERY OTHER PERSON RECEIVES DAYS. IT'S A STATE LAW THAT YOU GET ONE SICK DAY A MONTH.

WE PAY FOR THAT OUT OF OUR LOCAL DOLLARS, OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT DOLLARS.

AND BECAUSE THERE WAS A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, THE JROTC NEEDED AN INSPECTION.

SO I GOT TO SIT IN ON THAT. THAT WAS A BIT FUN.

I HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO EXPECT. SO ACTUALLY DID A LITTLE GOOGLING AND A LITTLE AI TO FIGURE OUT WHAT I WAS GOING TO BE NEEDING TO KNOW HOW TO DO. THEY MADE IT REALLY EASY ON ME THOUGH.

ESSENTIALLY, THEY HAD ME WATCH A 30 COMMAND DRILL, AND THEY WENT THROUGH ALL THE STEPS AND I WATCHED THEM.

AND ONE OF THE TAKEAWAYS FROM THAT IS THAT TEAM, WHEN THEY GOT DONE WITH THEIR DRILL SEQUENCE AND FELL OUT THEY IMMEDIATELY WENT TOGETHER AND STARTED TALKING ABOUT HOW THEY COULD IMPROVE.

AND THEN THE THE SECOND PART OF THE PROGRAM THAT THEY ASKED ME WAS TO PARTICIPATE IN A BRIEFING, AND I HAD NO IDEA WHAT THAT REALLY MEANT. BUT ONE OF THEIR CADETS, LIEUTENANT COLONEL FRITZ AND MAJOR NORWOOD, THE TWO OF THEM PAINTED A GREAT PICTURE. THEY THEY HAD MANY OF THE OTHER CADETS THERE.

WEINER, COLGRASS, CLARKWING, COLLINS AND GUNDERSON.

AND OF COURSE THEY HAVE PT ONCE A WEEK. ANYWAY, LOTS OF REALLY NEAT THINGS THAT THEY'RE DOING.

THE CAMARADERIE THAT THEY SHOWED AND JUST LEFT ME FEELING A REAL SENSE OF WONDERMENT ON THESE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE CLEARLY DOING JUST AMAZING THINGS.

TWO OF THE CADETS THIS LAST SUMMER WENT THROUGH A VERY STRINGENT SCHOLARSHIP PROCESS WHERE 1200 KIDS NATIONALLY APPLY FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP AND ONLY 100 ARE SELECTED.

TWO OF OUR JROTC KIDS GOT IN, AND THEY ACTUALLY GOT THEIR PRIVATE PILOT'S LICENSE OVER THE COURSE OF A MONTH, WHICH IS JUST AMAZING. AND LOTS OF STORIES ABOUT THAT, A TRIP THAT THEIR MARKSMANSHIP TEAM TOOK TO UTAH AND JUST SOME GREAT THINGS THAT THEY'RE EXPERIENCING.

I THINK WE DON'T OFTEN KNOW ABOUT ALL THESE INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE A PART OF, AND IT REALLY SPEAKS HIGHLY TO OUR CTE PROGRAMS, BECAUSE WE HAVE TWO OF THE THREE PROGRAMS THAT EXIST IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON. HERE IN BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS, THERE ARE ONLY THREE ROTC PROGRAMS, AND WE HAVE TWO OF THEM IN OUR DISTRICT.

AND I THINK THAT JUST SPEAKS TENFOLD FOR THE WORK THAT OUR CTE DIRECTOR AND, AND HER TEAMS ARE DOING.

SO THEIR, THEIR LEADERSHIP WAS GREAT. THE STUDENTS RAN IT.

THEY DID ALL OF IT. AND IT JUST GIVES ME A LOT OF CONFIDENCE IN OUR FUTURE WHEN I SEE THESE WONDERFUL KIDS DOING GREAT THINGS.

AS THE PRESIDENT OF BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION ASSOCIATION MY JOB IS NOT EASY, BUT IT DOES NOT COME CLOSE TO THE HARD WORK OF OUR EDUCATORS ARE DOING EVERY SINGLE DAY WITH THEIR STUDENTS. OUR NEARLY 800 CERTIFICATED STAFF MEMBERS ARE TEACHING, SUPPORTING, INSPIRING, AND CARING FOR OUR STUDENTS IN WAYS THAT GO FAR BEYOND WHAT THE PUBLIC OFTEN SEES.

THEIR DEDICATION IS CONSTANT AND THEIR IMPACT IS IMMEASURABLE.

BGEA WANTS TO THANK OUR OUTGOING BOARD, AND WE WISH YOU WELL ON YOUR NEW ADVENTURES, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH THOSE THAT ARE INCOMING.

I CHANGED THE WATER FILTER THE OTHER DAY, AND IT'S GOT THIS WHITE STUFF INSIDE.

I PRESENT RESOLUTION N-25 FOR YOUR APPROVAL, REQUESTING A FOUR YEAR LEVY FOR STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND OPERATIONS.

THIS MEASURE IS FUNDAMENTALLY ABOUT SUPPORTING THE 13,000 STUDENTS AND THE 1600 STAFF MEMBERS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING THEM WITH HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION IN A SAFE AND CARING ENVIRONMENT.

STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. LEVIES ARE DESIGNED TO FUND THE GAP BETWEEN STATE FUNDING AND THE ACTUAL COST TO EDUCATE OUR STUDENTS. STATE FUNDING ALONE IS INSUFFICIENT WITHOUT LOCAL LEVY FUNDING.

TO FILL THE GAP, THE BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT FACES SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL DISTRESS UNDER THE STATE'S CURRENT FUNDING MODEL.

LOCAL LEVIES SUPPORT STUDENT SAFETY, SMALLER CLASS SIZES, SPECIAL EDUCATION, TEACHERS, NURSING, MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS, CAREER READINESS, SPORTS AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, AND SO MUCH MORE.

THE PASSAGE OF RESOLUTION N-25 IS ESSENTIAL TO PREVENT OVER 20 MILLION IN ADDITIONAL REDUCTIONS THAT WOULD DIRECTLY IMPACT OUR CLASSROOMS. THIS REQUEST IS AMPLIFIED BY THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE RECENT LEVY LOSS, WHICH WILL CONTINUE TO IMPACT STUDENTS OVER TWO YEARS.

THE DISTRICT HAS ALREADY IMPLEMENTED $14 MILLION IN CUTS TO STAFFING AND PROGRAMS. FURTHERMORE, WE ARE BUDGETED TO EXHAUST 14 MILLION IN FUND BALANCE RESERVES.

ONE TIME FUNDS THAT WERE SPECIFICALLY SET ASIDE FOR EDUCATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS LIKE CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS.

THIS IMPACT WILL CONTINUE. THE 14 MILLION IN CUTS WILL REMAIN FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR, AND THE REMAINING FUND BALANCE IS ALREADY BUDGETED TO BE USED.

MEANING THAT EVEN IF THIS LEVY WERE TO PASS, THERE IS NO CUSHION UNTIL STARTING IN 2027, RISING OPERATIONAL COSTS AND UNFUNDED MANDATES FROM THE STATE ONLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE URGENCY FOR THIS LOCAL LEVY PROPOSAL.

I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LOCAL LEVY FUNDING.

WITHOUT IT, OUR 13,000 STUDENTS WILL FACE FURTHER REDUCTIONS IN HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION, REDUCTIONS IN ESSENTIAL STAFFING AND LOSS OF VITAL PROGRAMS AND POTENTIAL FOR SCHOOL CLOSURES WHEN OTHER FEASIBLE CUTS ARE EXHAUSTED.

POLICY 3425 IS TITLED ACCOMMODATING STUDENTS WITH ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.

THE POLICY IS NECESSARY BECAUSE EARLIER THIS YEAR, OUR LEGISLATURE PASSED SENATE HOUSE BILL 1709, AND SENATE HOUSE BILL 1709 REQUIRES SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO ADOPT POLICIES GOVERNING THE CARE OF STUDENTS WITH ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.

AND I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE HELPFUL IF I TELL YOU JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY IS.

IT'S A RARE AND COMPLEX ENDOCRINE OR HORMONAL DISORDER THAT OCCURS WHEN OUR ADRENAL GLANDS, WHICH ARE TWO SMALL GLANDS THAT SIT IN OUR ABDOMEN ABOVE OUR KIDNEYS, ARE NOT ABLE TO PRODUCE ENOUGH OF A HORMONE CALLED CORTISOL.

CORTISOL IS AN IMPORTANT HORMONE. WE NEED A CONSTANT AND STEADY SUPPLY OF IT IN OUR BLOODSTREAM TO PLAY A KEY ROLE IN MEDIATING A LOT OF THE FUNCTIONS THAT WE REQUIRE YOUR HUMAN BODY TO LIVE, THINGS LIKE REGULATING OUR BLOOD PRESSURE, OUR METABOLISM THE WAY THAT OUR BODY DIGESTS DIGEST FOOD AND CONTROLS OUR BLOOD SUGAR AND, SIGNIFICANTLY, OUR BODY'S RESPONSE TO ANY STRESSOR.

THERE ARE SEVERAL CAUSES OF ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY IN CHILDREN.

MOST SIGNIFICANTLY, SUDDEN AND SEVERE ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY SYMPTOMS ARE KNOWN AS ADRENAL CRISES.

AND THOSE CRISES CAN BE LIFE THREATENING. AND THEY REQUIRE IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION BY CAREGIVERS IN ORDER TO PREVENT SIGNIFICANT CONSEQUENCES AND AND OFTEN, IF LEFT UNTREATED, DURING CRISIS AND ADRENAL CRISIS RESULTS IN DEATH.

SO SENATE BILL 1709 HAD SOME SPECIFIC OBLIGATIONS, AND MANY OF THEM THE DISTRICT WAS ALREADY IMPLEMENTING THE LEGISLATION REQUIRES US TO ADOPT POLICIES TO SUPPORT THESE STUDENTS.

ONE OF THE THINGS THE LEGISLATION REQUIRES IS THAT DISTRICTS DEVELOP EMERGENCY CARE PLANS AND INDIVIDUAL HEALTH PLANS FOR STUDENTS WITH ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY AND AS A DISTRICT AND AS A MATTER OF BEST PRACTICE.

I'VE HAD NURSES DOING THOSE TWO THINGS FOR THE LAST 8 OR 9 YEARS IN THE DISTRICT.

I ATTACHED AS EXHIBITS FOR YOU OUR ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN.

THAT'S A PLAN THAT GOES TO UNLICENSED STAFF. WE HAVE SIMILAR PLANS FOR ALL LIFE THREATENING HEALTH CONDITIONS.

ADDITIONALLY, WE HAVE INDIVIDUAL HEALTH PLANS THAT WE ARE ALREADY UTILIZING.

MEDS IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON UNDER BEST PRACTICE ARE BEHIND TWO LOCKED DOORS.

SO WE HAVE LOCKED HEALTH ROOMS AND LOCKED MEDICATION CABINETS TO STORE ALL OF OUR RESCUE MEDICATIONS.

THE RESCUE MED FOR AN ADRENAL CRISIS IS AN INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION.
