WE'LL START OFF FIRST, THOUGH, WITH OUR TWO SLIDES HONORING OUR RETIREES IN OUR DISTRICT.
SO I WANT TO FIRST TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR CERTIFICATED RETIREES.
SO AS YOU SEE HERE, WE HAVE QUITE A FEW INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE BEEN WITH US FOR A VERY LONG TIME.
SO IN THAT FIRST COLUMN THERE WE HAVE JOAN CAMPBELL AND BECKY SWANSON.
THEY HAVE A LITTLE LESS THAN TEN YEARS OF SERVICE WITHIN OUR DISTRICT.
BUT OUR RETIRING THOSE WITH MORE THAN TEN YEARS OF SERVICE, WE HAVE GINGER MARTIN, KELLY EISEMAN, PAMELA HULL, DANNY WATERS, CATHY OGG. MORE THAN 20 YEARS OF SERVICE IN OUR DISTRICT MARC CAUGHIE, JAMES MATHIS, JANE AND STAFF. AND THEN THESE ARE OUR MORE THAN 30 YEARS WITHIN OUR DISTRICT KATHY FERRIER, BRETT HOPE, LORI SIBLEY, DAVID HARDING, AND MICHAEL TYRONE.
THE NEXT SLIDE IS OUR CLASSIFIED RETIREES. SO AGAIN, FEWER THAN TEN YEARS WITHIN OUR DISTRICT, AT JANET CHAPMAN MORE THAN TEN YEARS IS BOBETTE NELSON, MORE THAN 20 YEARS, ROBIN KUHN, KIM BRIMLEY, RENEE SHEVCHUK, MARLA SMITH AND THEN MORE THAN 30 YEARS, CARMEN FLORES, RAEDEAN PIMM AND LYNETTE HOFER.

SO 4 OR 5 YEARS AGO. SHE HAS RETURNED AND IS GOING TO BE THE PRINCIPAL AT PLEASANT VALLEY.

SHE IS NOW STEPPING INTO THE ROLE AS THE PRINCIPAL AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL FOR THIS NEXT YEAR.
SO WE'RE EXCITED FOR THOSE CHANGES. AND THESE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL CHANGES.
SUZANNA WOEHR IS CURRENTLY THE PRINCIPAL AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.
ERIC SAKSHAUG CURRENTLY THE PRINCIPAL AT LAURIN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
AND THEN LASTLY, EVERETT KLODT, HE IS CURRENTLY AN AP AT LAURIN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
HE HAS ACCEPTED THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR POSITION AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.
SO QUITE A FEW CHANGES THERE. ALL RIGHT. AND THEN OUR LAST SLIDE.
I DO WANT TO INTRODUCE LORI LANDERHOLM. I KNOW SHE WAS NOT ABLE TO BE HERE TONIGHT.
SHE IS TRAVELING WITH HER HUSBAND. BUT SHE WISHES SHE COULD BE HERE.
SHE IS OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES. AND SHE IS COMING FROM LA CENTER SCHOOL DISTRICT, WHERE SHE HAS BEEN THE AP PRINCIPAL AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THEN ALSO THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT.
MOST RECENTLY IN LA CENTER. AND SO WE'RE EXCITED TO HAVE HER ON BOARD.
AND THEN LASTLY, I'D LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE LYNELLE TSUGAWA- MURRAY.
SHE IS CURRENTLY OUR DIRECTOR OF FEDERAL PROGRAMS, AND SHE HAS ACCEPTED THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT ROLE PENDING BOARD APPROVAL THIS EVENING. SO WE ARE VERY EXCITED THAT SHE HAS ACCEPTED THAT ROLE AND EXCITED TO HAVE HER MAKE AN IMPACT. SO THOSE ARE THE ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES AND THE RETIREES THAT WE WANTED TO HONOR.
SO IF WE CAN JUST KIND OF GIVE A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR ALL OF THOSE CHANGES.
I DID WANT TO POINT OUT I'VE GOTTEN A NUMBER OF QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ROLES OF AN ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT VERSUS A DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT, SO I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE WORTHWHILE TO POINT OUT THE DIFFERENCES THAT ARE AT LEAST ARE TRUE FOR OUR DISTRICT.
YOU WILL NOTICE FROM DISTRICT TO DISTRICT THAT WHAT PEOPLE NAME ROLES IS DIFFERENT.
YOU'LL HEAR VICE PRINCIPALS SOMETIMES IN SOME PLACES WE DON'T.
WE DON'T USE THE WORD VICE PRINCIPAL, MAINLY BECAUSE OUR PRINCIPALS TELL US THEY HAVE NO VICES, SO THERE'S NO REASON TO CALL THEM VICE PRINCIPALS.
WE USE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS, BUT THERE THE NAMES DO CHANGE FROM DISTRICT TO DISTRICT.
BUT WHAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN TRUE, AT LEAST IN BATTLE GROUND, IS THAT THE WAY THAT THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT AND AN ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT IS USUALLY THE AMOUNT OF THINGS THAT THEY OVERSEE.
SO ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS OFTEN OVERSEE ONE DEPARTMENT.
DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENTS USUALLY OVERSEE MULTIPLE DEPARTMENTS.
IN VERY LARGE DISTRICTS DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENTS THEY ALMOST THEY'RE ALMOST IN A DIFFERENT ROLE.
THEY OVERSEE ALL THE DEPARTMENTS WITH THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS THAT ARE ON THOSE DEPARTMENTS.
SO IT DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF THE DISTRICT, HOW THAT ROLE EXPANDS.
BUT DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENTS ALWAYS HAVE MULTIPLE ROLES WITHIN THE DISTRICT, MORE THAN ONE DEPARTMENT.
SO THAT'S THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE ROLES.
LYNELL WILL BE OVERSEEING OUR TEACHING AND LEARNING DEPARTMENT AND WILL BE HELPING WITH COMPLIANCE.

BUT SHE WILL NOT BE OVERSEEING HUMAN RESOURCES LIKE WAS PREVIOUSLY IN MY ROLE AS DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT.SO THOSE WILL BE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE TWO ROLES.
BUT I WANTED TO MAKE SURE YOU DIDN'T HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT, BECAUSE YOU MAY ALSO BE GETTING QUESTIONS, AS I HAVE. AND I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU COULD RESPOND TO THOSE IF YOU GOT THOSE QUESTIONS.
AND I KNOW AS WE'RE MOVING TO A LOT OF STAFF CHANGES, AS MICHELLE JUST WENT OVER, I ANTICIPATE THERE WILL BE MORE AS WE NOW HAVE A DIRECTOR OF FEDERAL PROGRAMS POSITION. I EXPECT THAT THAT WILL CONTINUE ON INTO THE SUMMER.
BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE ALSO DOING IS BECAUSE OF THE REDUCTION IN FUNDING DUE TO THE LOSS OF THE LEVY, WE HAVE BEEN MEETING TO DETERMINE WHERE ROLES GO AND HOW TO REALLOCATE THE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PEOPLE THAT ARE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT THINGS GET IMPLEMENTED PROPERLY AND AND MAINTAIN THAT COMPLIANCE LEVEL THAT WE NEED.
AND SO I'VE STARTED TO DO SOME COMPARISONS, AND I THOUGHT I WOULD PROVIDE YOU WITH SOME INFORMATION.
I DID A COMPARISON. I'LL GIVE YOU A COPY OF THIS DOCUMENT.
BUT ESSENTIALLY I DID A COMPARISON WITH THE DISTRICTS THAT HAVE ENROLLMENT OF FOUR DISTRICTS THAT ARE OUR MORE HAVE MORE ENROLLMENT THAN US, BUT ARE ADJACENT TO US THAT HAVE AN INCREASE.
SO PEOPLE FROM 12,859 UP TO 14,762. I DID A COMPARISON, AS WELL AS DISTRICTS THAT HAD 11,438 DOWN TO JUST UNDER 10,000, SO THAT YOU COULD SEE LIKE SIZED DISTRICTS, THE WAY IN WHICH THEY'RE STAFFING AT THE SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL. I INTEND TO DO THE SAME THING FOR DIRECTOR LEVEL, PRINCIPAL LEVEL, SO WE CAN GET A SENSE OF WHERE WE FIT. THIS IS A BIT OF INFORMATION THAT OUR COMMUNITY IS CONTINUALLY TELLING US THAT WE'RE WE'RE NEEDING TO LOOK AT.
AND I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT INFORMATION IS ACCURATE AND SHARE THAT ACCURATELY.
WHAT I FOUND JUST DOING THE SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL.
SO THIS LAST YEAR, THE SUPERINTENDENT AND DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT WERE THE ONLY TWO SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL POSITIONS OF THE DISTRICTS DISTRICT'S LARGER THAN US. ALL OF THEM HAD 4 OR 5 SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL POSITIONS SUPERINTENDENT, DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT, TWO ASSISTANT SUPES. ONE OF THEM HAD ONE OF THEM HAS ONE SUPERINTENDENT AND THREE ASSISTANT SUPES.
SO THEY'RE ALL VARIED, BUT THEY HAVE 4 OR 5 SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL POSITIONS.
SO I JUST WANTED TO POINT THAT OUT BECAUSE AS WE HEAR FROM PEOPLE THAT WE ARE OVERSTAFFED, I WANT TO POINT OUT, AT LEAST AT THIS ROLE WHERE I'VE DONE THE COMPARISON, PART OF THAT COMPARISON, THAT'S AN INACCURATE INFORMATION. AS I SAID, I INTEND TO DO THAT FOR OUR OTHER POSITIONS AS WELL, BECAUSE WHAT WE KNOW IS WHEN YOU HAVE PROGRAMS AND YOU HAVE HEALTHY PROGRAMS, YOU HAVE TO HAVE PEOPLE MONITORING THEM AND ASSURING THAT THEY'RE BEING HANDLED APPROPRIATELY AND CORRECTLY. THAT'S NOT TO SAY THAT I THINK WE NEED TO BE OVERSTAFFED.
I THINK WE'VE DONE A GOOD JOB WITH WHAT WE'VE HAD.
I FEEL LIKE WE WILL BE PUTTING OURSELVES IN SOME UNCHARTED TERRITORY THAT I'M A BIT WORRIED ABOUT.
AND SO I WANTED TO SHARE THAT INFORMATION WITH YOU.

THE ONLY TIME THAT YOU RUN INTO THAT, AND WE'RE REALLY FAMILIAR WITH THAT BECAUSE WE DO POSITION REVIEW COMMITTEE WITH A LOT OF OUR EMPLOYEE GROUPS, WHICH IS IS A COMPARISON OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES.SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL RESPONSIBILITIES ARE PRETTY SIMILAR ACROSS FROM ONE ONE DISTRICT TO ANOTHER.
AND SO TYPICALLY IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE IT'S I ALWAYS SAY IT'S AN INCH DEEP AND A MILE WIDE.
WHEN YOU DON'T, WHEN YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALL YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO GO VERY DEEP AND YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO THE WORK VERY THOROUGHLY, BECAUSE TIME JUST DOESN'T PERMIT IT. BUT WHEN YOU HAVE SOME LEVEL, OUR DISTRICT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO HAVE THE PRINCIPAL POSITION AND THEN DIRECTOR POSITIONS AND THEN SUPERINTENDENT LEVELS.
THAT'S BEEN NORMAL FOR US. WHAT IS NOT NORMAL FOR US IS THAT MANY OF THE DISTRICTS OF OUR SIZE, AND I'M, I KNOW AT LEAST TWO OF THESE DISTRICTS THAT THIS IS TRUE OF.
THERE IS SOME WHAT WE WOULD CONSIDER MIDDLE MANAGEMENT.
SOMETIMES THEY'RE CALLED MANAGERS, SOMETIMES THEY'RE TOSSES.
WE HAVE HAD TOSSES, BUT WE CUT MOST OF OUR TOSSES.
WE CUT SOME OF THEM LAST YEAR WHEN WE LOST ESSER FUNDS AND WE CUT ABOUT HALF.
MORE THAN HALF THIS GO AROUND WITH THE LEVY LOSS.
BECAUSE WHEN YOU LOSE MONEY, YOU HAVE TO KEEP IT FURTHER.
OR IN OUR OPINION, YOU KEEP IT FURTHER AWAY FROM THE KIDS.
WELL, THIS WILL IMPACT OUR TEACHERS. I ALLUDED TO THAT PREVIOUSLY IN ONE OF OUR PAST BOARD MEETINGS THAT IT WILL IMPACT, BUT WE WON'T SEE IT RIGHT AWAY. AND THAT'S A DECISION THAT WE MAKE INTENTIONALLY, BECAUSE WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SERVICES THAT WE PROVIDE, KIDS DON'T FEEL THAT RIGHT AWAY, BUT WE WILL FEEL IT IN THE LONG RUN IN THE LONG TERM.
SO SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL, THAT'S NOT REALLY TRUE FOR BUT FOR OTHER LEVELS IT IS.
AND WE'LL HAVE TO LOOK REALLY CLOSELY WHEN WE DO THOSE COMPARISONS.

BUT HOW MANY BUILDINGS ARE THEY MANAGING WHEN YOU LOOK AT HOW MANY BUILDINGS WE MANAGE WITH ONLY TWO PEOPLE, IT STARTS TO PUT A WHOLE NOTHER ELEMENT TO THAT ANALYSIS.
YEAH. YOU KNOW BECAUSE THEY HAVE FIVE PEOPLE.
DO THEY HAVE BUT DO THEY HAVE 25 BUILDINGS, DO THEY HAVE 30 BUILDINGS OR DO THEY HAVE SIX BUILDINGS AND THEY'RE JUST ALL OVER STAFFED? YEAH, EXACTLY. SO IT WOULD BE A, YOU KNOW, ANOTHER CURIOSITY I THINK THAT WOULD HELP THAT ANALYSIS.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE I'VE BEEN AN EMPLOYEE IN BATTLE GROUND THAT WE'VE ONLY HAD TWO.
SO, I DON'T KNOW, I'D PROBABLY HAVE TO GO DEEP IN THE ARCHIVES TO FIND A TIME WHERE WE HAD TWO, TWO POSITIONS. BUT THAT, YOU KNOW, IS JUST THE REALITY.
DENNY AND I DECIDED TO DO THAT. THE UNIQUENESS OF THAT IS THAT WHEN DENNY GOT STARTED, IF YOU REMEMBER, WE DID NOT PASS THE LEVY IN FEBRUARY, BUT WE WERE COMING OUT OF COVID AND AS THE BOARD MADE THE DECISION THAT WE WOULD WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER TO RUN IT AGAIN. SO WE HAD TO MAKE REDUCTIONS THAT THAT SPRING IN ORDER TO BUILD OUR BUDGET.
AND SO WHEN WE MADE THAT REDUCTION, WE DECIDED THAT BECAUSE I HAD EXPERIENCE IN BOTH HUMAN RESOURCES AND TEACHING AND LEARNING, I COULD DO BOTH ROLES. AND DENNY HAD EXPERIENCE.

AND IT WAS JUST IT WAS VERY INSPIRING TO ME TO HEAR ABOUT, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF THESE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO, YOU KNOW, ARE ON THEIR OWN, THEY'RE WORKING FULL TIME AND FINISHING THEIR EDUCATION, WHICH I WAS VERY INSPIRED BY. LOVE TO HEAR THE STORIES OF THEIR SUCCESSES.
AND PRETTY EXCITED TO BE A PART OF ALL OF THAT.

AND FOR ME, WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THAT 8020 NUMBER OF THE GED STUDENTS AND THE STUDENTS THAT SOME OF YOU, MANY OF MANY OF THOSE STUDENTS ARE THEY'RE THEY WOULDN'T HAVE IN ANOTHER PLACE GOTTEN ACROSS THE FINISH LINE.

EVENTUALLY, I HIRED AN ATTORNEY, AND THAT ATTORNEY SUBPOENAED DENNY TO TESTIFY.AFTER HEARING DENNY'S TESTIMONY, THE JUDGE RECOGNIZED THE DISTRICT'S PATTERN, AND MY SON WAS RELEASED FROM COURT OVER FOR COURT FROM COURT OVERSIGHT AND PROBATION WITHOUT DELAY. AND AFTER TWO AFTER NEARLY TWO YEARS OF CHARGES, VIOLATIONS AND SUSPENSIONS.
ALL BECAUSE I HELD THIS DISTRICT ACCOUNTABLE.
NOT THIS DISTRICT. DIFFERENT DISTRICT. BUT SPEAKING THE TRUTH THAT DAY CAME WITH A COST FOR DENNY.
HE EARNED THAT ADVOCACY MARK WITHIN THAT DISTRICT.

DENNY WAS SUDDENLY REMOVED FROM MY SON'S CASE WITHOUT WARNING, EXPLANATION, REPLACEMENT.
JUST SILENCE. BUT SETBACKS FUEL ME. THEY PUSHED ME TO DEMAND BETTER.
I FOUGHT HARD TO GET DENNY REINSTATED ON MY SON'S CASE, AS HE WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO HAD THE COURAGE TO DO THE RIGHT THING WHEN ONLY OTHERS COWARD. I MET WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT MULTIPLE TIMES AND THROUGH MY PERSISTENCE, HE AGREED TO DO AN INTERNAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE SCHOOL'S ACTIONS, AND AS A RESULT, DENNY WAS EVENTUALLY REINSTATED TO MY SON'S ACCOUNT BECAUSE THERE WAS NO WRONGDOING.
BUT THE DAMAGE WAS DONE AND DENNY HAD TO CREATE DISTANCE BECAUSE BEING TIED TO MY ADVOCACY WAS GOING WASN'T GOING TO ADVANCE HIS FUTURE IN THAT DISTRICT. AND THAT WAS THE COST OF DOING WHAT'S RIGHT.
EVENTUALLY, DENNY LEFT THAT DISTRICT AND HE LANDED HERE.
YEARS LATER, MY SON HAD A CHILD, AND THAT CHILD IS CASSIE.
WHILE I HAVE TO ADVOCATE FOR CASSIE IN THIS DISTRICT AND HER STORY IS STILL BEING WRITTEN.

THERE WERE SOME THINGS THAT I HAD SOME PROBLEMS WITH, SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES I, I WASN'T REAL FOND OF IT SEEMED EVERY GRADE HAD A GUIDED MEDITATION.
AND I KNOW THAT'S THAT'S AN ISSUE FOR A LOT OF FAMILIES.
I DID SUGGEST THAT INSTEAD OF HAVING GUIDED MEDITATIONS, THAT IT BE CHANGED TO CHILDREN VISUALIZING THE STUDENTS VISUALIZING, VISUALIZING A TIME WHEN THEY WERE A LEADER, VISUALIZING A TIME WHEN THEY WORKED AS A TEAM.
AND I THINK THAT WOULD BE A LITTLE BIT BETTER.
