AS I WAS SAYING, I WAS A LEADER. I AM A LEADER AMONG THE HISPANIC LATINO COMMUNITY.
I'M CURRENTLY VICE PRESIDENT OF THE HISPANIC LATINO STUDENT UNION AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.
IN THE PAST, I'VE HELD A RIGOROUS, RIGOROUS LEADERSHIP ROLES LIKE ASB PRESIDENT AT MY MIDDLE SCHOOL.
I BELIEVE THAT THOSE ACCOLADES HAVE MADE ME A STRONG FIT FOR THIS POSITION.
OKAY. HI, DANIEL. HI ITZEL. SO YOUR SECOND QUESTION IS, WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE ROLE OF A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD? HAVE YOU EVER ATTENDED A BOARD MEETING IN PERSON OR VIRTUALLY? IF SO, WHAT DID YOU LIKE AND WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND CHANGING? WELL, I BELIEVE THAT THE ROLE OF A STUDENT BOARD MEMBER, I BELIEVE IT IS TO TO GIVE A VIEW FROM THE STUDENT PERSPECTIVE.
I BELIEVE THAT THE STUDENT BOARD MEMBER COULD GIVE A VIEW THAT THE BOARD IS NOT ABLE TO SEE WITHOUT THE WITHOUT, WITHOUT STUDENTS. IT IS A NECESSARY PART BECAUSE THEY DON'T SEE WHAT GOES ON IN SCHOOLS EVERY DAY.
I BELIEVE IT IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE BOARD, AND I HAVE NOT ATTENDED A BOARD MEETING, NOR IN REAL LIFE OR VIRTUALLY, AND I CAN'T COMMENT ON IT BECAUSE I HAVE NOT ATTENDED.
SO I'M TERRY NAME 2 OR 3 ISSUES THAT YOU THINK MIGHT COME UP AT A BOARD MEETING THAT YOU COULD WEIGH IN ON. PICK ONE. TALK TO US ABOUT THAT ISSUE AND TELL US HOW YOU MIGHT CONTRIBUTE TO THE DISCUSSION.
SO A COUPLE ISSUES I SEE AMONG THE SCHOOL ARE.
OBVIOUSLY, THIS NEW LEVY IS A BIG PART. AND THERE'S A FOAM POLICY THAT COULD DEFINITELY BE CHANGED.
I'M GOING TO CHOOSE TO FOCUS ON THE FOAM POLICY.
WHAT I THINK WOULD BE BEST I CAN GIVE MY OPINION TO THIS BOARD.
I THINK IT SHOULD DEPEND ON THE TEACHER BY TEACHER AND HOW THEY WANT TO HANDLE IT.
AND IF THEY WANT TO GIVE DISCIPLINARY, DISCIPLINARY ACTS FOR THE PHONE USE.

ALL RIGHT. THE BOARD IS STRONGLY PROMOTED AND ENCOURAGED. STUDENT VOICE THIS PAST YEAR, HOW WOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE TO STUDENT VOICE AND HOW WOULD YOU ENABLE ALL STUDENTS WITHIN THE DISTRICT TO PARTICIPATE? SO BEFORE I DID NOT LEARN ENGLISH TILL FIRST GRADE, AND I WAS IN A POSITION WHERE I WAS NOT ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS AND MAKE SURE EVERYBODY HEARD WHAT I WAS TOLD. SO I CAN GIVE A SENSE OF EMPATHY TO THOSE THAT DO NOT GET REPRESENTED AS MUCH.
AND I'VE BEEN IN THAT POSITION. I UNDERSTAND WHAT IT FEELS LIKE.
IT'S NOT FAIR TO NOT GET REPRESENTED. I FEEL WITH THAT, I CAN MAKE SURE EVERYBODY GETS REPRESENTED, MAKING SURE EVERYBODY GETS TREATED EQUALLY AND FAIRLY AND MAKING SURE IN WHAT WAY THAT EVERYBODY GETS THEIR OWN VOICE AND MAKES SURE

EVERYBODY'S HEARD AMONGST THIS BOARD AND AMONGST EVERY SCHOOL ACROSS THE BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT.THANK YOU. DANIEL, I'M MARY. AND THIS QUESTION IS WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU RECEIVED A COMPLAINT FROM A FELLOW STUDENT, PARENT OR COMMUNITY MEMBER CONSIDERING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT? I WOULD OBVIOUSLY ADDRESS THE COMPLAINT AND SEE WHAT THEIR VIEWS ARE AND ALIGN THEM WITH THE VIEWS OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, MAKING SURE THEY UNDERSTAND WHY THAT THING THAT THEY'RE COMPLAINING ABOUT IS IN PLACE AND MAKING SURE VIEWS ALIGN.
NOT ALL VIEWS ARE THE SAME, BUT HOWEVER SOME, I'M NOT SAYING THAT SOME ARE PRIORITIZED OVER OTHER, BUT THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT CANNOT BE CHANGED BECAUSE OF THE WAY THINGS ARE.

WHAT IS BEING A MEMBER IN THE SCHOOL BOARD LIKE TO YOU GUYS? WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU? MAYBE YOU GUYS CAN ANSWER THAT ONE.I'LL GO LIKE THIS. OH, OKAY. SO FOR ME BEING ON THE SCHOOL BOARD AS A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE SPECIFICALLY, I THINK REQUIRES A LOT OF HONESTY. AND THAT'S KIND OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.
A LOT OF PEOPLE, EVEN IF THEY'RE NOT ON THE SCHOOL BOARD LIKE STAFF MEMBERS, YOU'LL HAVE ADMIN TEACHERS WILL COME UP TO YOU AND ASK FOR AN HONEST OPINION, AND THEY WILL EXPECT YOU TO BE SPEAKING FOR ALL 12,000 STUDENTS IN THE DISTRICT, WHICH CAN BE A LITTLE SCARY SOMETIMES.
AND YOU DEFINITELY ARE FACED WITH A LOT OF CONFLICTING ISSUES.
PEOPLE COME UP TO YOU. NOT PEOPLE AREN'T REALLY COMING UP TO YOU ABOUT GOOD THINGS MOST OF THE TIME.
SORRY. NO, THAT'S NOT MY JOB. MY JOB IS TO ADVISE.
SO AS A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, WE'RE NOT FIXING THE ISSUES.
WE'RE NOT, YOU KNOW, WE DON'T HAVE AN ELECTED VOTE, SO WE'RE NOT VOTING YES OR NO.
AND IT DOESN'T COUNT. BUT WE HAVE AN ADVISORY VOTE. WE'RE SAYING, YEAH, LIKE, I REALLY LIKE WHAT YOU'RE SAYING EARLIER ABOUT HOW ABOUT HOW THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT STUDENTS. AND THAT'S KIND OF WHAT IT'S LIKE FOR US, IS THAT WE'RE KIND OF GIVING THEM THE PERSPECTIVE THAT THEY DON'T HAVE.
SO. YEAH, KIND OF LIKE JULIA SAID, AS BEING LIKE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE.
YOU WANT TO REPRESENT THE STUDENTS. BUT IN MY EYES, WHY I WANTED THIS POSITION IS BECAUSE NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE SEE WHAT INSIDE WHAT IT IS TO BE A STUDENT IN A HIGH SCHOOL, IN A MIDDLE SCHOOL, IN A MILITARY SCHOOL. LIKE WE EVOLVE EVERY YEAR.
SO BEING A STUDENT, I TRY TO VOICE WHAT THE NEEDS ARE RIGHT NOW AND WHAT THE ISSUES ARE RIGHT NOW.
SO FOR THE FUTURE ISSUES, THEY HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY TO FIX THOSE AND NOT WORRY ABOUT PAST ISSUES.
AND JUST BECAUSE WE CAN'T FIX IT DOES NOT STOP ME FROM VOICING MY OPINION OF WHAT CAN BE RESOLVED IN SOME SORT OF WAY, OR CAN BE SEEN IN SOME SORT OF WAY. SO YEAH, THAT'S FINE.
OKAY, JUST SO YOU KNOW, WE'VE HAD MANY OF OUR STUDENT REPS, INCLUDING THE TWO THAT YOU SEE SITTING HERE ALWAYS MAKING VALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS, BUT SOME HAVE EVEN CHANGED BOARD POLICY FOR US.
SO YOU KNOW, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE CAN ASSURE YOU IS THAT YOUR VOICE, YOUR PERSPECTIVE, YOUR OPINIONS, AND YOUR IDEAS WILL CERTAINLY BE VALUED BY THE BOARD AND BY DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION.

ONE DRAWBACK IS, I THINK SOMETIMES A LOT OF PEOPLE HEAR STUDENT REPS AND MIGHT KIND OF GO OVER US OR KIND OF HIGHLIGHT US TO A POINT WHERE THEY THINK THAT WE HAVE SO MUCH POWER.BUT YET AGAIN, WE ARE STUDENT REPS, AND AS MUCH AS WE WE HAVE AN ADVISORY VOTE, THERE'S STILL A LOT THERE'S STILL THINGS THAT WE CAN'T REALLY GO AHEAD AND JUST AUTOMATICALLY FIX. SO THAT'S KIND OF WHAT'S HARD IS THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE TELL US WHAT WE MIGHT, WHAT THEY WANT US TO VOICE ABOUT, KIND OF TRYING TO SEE IF THEY IF WE SAY IT, THEN IT MIGHT CHANGE IT.
BUT IN REALITY WE'RE JUST VOICING WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO EXPRESS TO THE BOARD.
BUT IT MIGHT NOT ALWAYS GET FIXED. RIGHT? YEAH.
LIKE, FOR EXAMPLE, I GO TO AN ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL, SO I REPRESENT ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS, BUT I'M ALSO SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT ALL LIKE ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND THAT INCLUDES COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOLS AND THAT INCLUDES PRIMARY SCHOOLS.
AND SO IT KIND OF IT'S VERY GROWING IN THAT SENSE WHERE YOU ARE LITERALLY FORCED TO AUTOMATICALLY THINK OF MAYBE A GROUP OF PEOPLE OTHER THAN YOURSELF OR THAN WHAT YOU BELONG TO. AND LIKE FOR ME, THAT WAS LIKE A HUGE BENEFIT.
AND I ALSO BECAUSE OF THAT, BEING ON THE SCHOOL BOARD, I WAS ABLE TO MAKE CONNECTIONS WITH OTHER STUDENTS THAT I DON'T THINK I WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE, JUST BECAUSE I NEEDED TO UNDERSTAND THEM IN ORDER TO REPRESENT THEM, WHICH WAS SUPER AWESOME.
EVERYBODY ELSE, THIS IS LIKE THEIR LIFE, YOU KNOW, LIKE YOU'RE CONSTANTLY TALKING WITH PEOPLE WHO HAVE YEARS, DECADES OF EXPERIENCE, AND YOU'RE NOT. I'M NOT EVEN TWO DECADES OLD, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? SO THAT CAN IT CAN BE VERY OVERWHELMING FEELING.
WHAT'S THE GOOD WORD FOR THAT FEELING? KIND OF INADEQUATE FEELING LIKE YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TO CONTRIBUTE. BUT THAT'S NOT THE TRUTH, BECAUSE NOBODY HAS THE SAME PERSPECTIVE AS SOMEBODY WHO'S ACTUALLY A STUDENT, I THINK. I DON'T THINK THERE'S A SINGLE ADULT WHO ACTUALLY GETS STUDENTS IN THE WAY THAT STUDENTS DO, YOU KNOW? YEAH.
AND ALSO JUST LIKE WHEN YOU REALIZE WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOOR AND REALIZE THAT YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO LEARN AND LIKE, I'M ABOUT TO GRADUATE NEXT WEEK, I DID NOT. I PROBABLY LEARNED LIKE THIS MUCH.
I. I BARELY OPENED THE PANDORA'S BOX THAT IS THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
SO YEAH, I'D SAY THAT'S THE HARDEST THING FOR ME.

YOU'LL HEAR SOME VOICES AT THIS MEETING, BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE FEELINGS OR THOUGHTS OF YOU HAVE TO GO LOOKING FOR IT, YOU HAVE TO GO ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS, TALKING TO A WIDE DIVERSITY OF INDIVIDUALS AND PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES AND DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS.
AND AND THAT'S THE HARDEST PART OF IT. YOU KNOW, YOU COULD SIT HERE AND LISTEN TO, YOU KNOW, TEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT AN ISSUE AND THINK, WELL, MAYBE I, I UNDERSTAND ALL THOSE PEOPLE WERE AGAINST IT OR ALL THOSE PEOPLE WERE FOR IT OR IT WAS 50 OVER 50 SPLIT. BUT THERE'S AS EVERYBODY HAS SAID, THE STUDENT REPS, THERE'S 12,000 STUDENTS OUT THERE AND 7000 PARENTS AND 38,000 PEOPLE WHO VOTED IN THE LAST ELECTION.
AND THAT'S THE HARDEST, IN MY OPINION. THAT'S THE HARDEST PART OF THE JOB OF BEING A REPRESENTATIVE.

ANYWAY SO A LOT OF THE BOARD MEETING IS HONESTLY, SOMETIMES IT SOUNDS LIKE MAYBE REDUNDANT INFORMATION, BUT IT'S NOT. IT'S YOU HEAR A LOT OF VERY VALUABLE THINGS.
THERE'S A LOT OF DISCUSSION, LIKE JUST AMONG THE BOARD ABOUT CERTAIN THINGS.
SO LIKE, FOR EXAMPLE, TONIGHT THERE WILL BE A DISCUSSION ABOUT BUDGET CUTS, AND WE'LL BE THERE FOR A WHILE AND IT WILL LITERALLY BE IT'S LIKE ONE OF THE SECOND POINTS. IT'S LIKE ONE OF THE FIRST POINTS ON THE AGENDA, AND WE WILL BE THERE FOR A LONG TIME.
SO. YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER. NO, YOU'RE NOT REQUIRED.
AND THEN MY OTHER QUESTION IS, I, I JUST KIND OF WANT TO KNOW, WHERE DO YOU GUYS, LIKE, GET YOUR INFORMATION FROM? I KNOW YOU SAID LIKE, THE DISTRICT, BUT, LIKE, HOW DOES IT WHAT FORM DOES IT COME IN? OR A LOT OF INFORMATION. THERE'S A LOT OF INFORMATION FROM VARYING SOURCES.
I MEAN, WE'RE THE ONES THAT ARE WORKING WITH IT ON A DAILY BASIS.
SO WE GIVE THE BOARD REPORTS, WE GIVE THEM COPIES OF DOCUMENTS.
THAT'S ALL IN BOARD DOCS SO THAT THEY CAN REVIEW IT PRIOR TO THE MEETING.
THERE ARE ALSO THE BOARD IS PARTICIPATING WITH THE LEGISLATURE.
SO THEY'RE WORKING WITH THE LEGISLATURE. THEY'RE PARTICIPATING WITH THERE'S A STATEWIDE ORGANIZATION CALLED WSSDA, WHICH IS THE WASHINGTON SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION.
AND SO IT'S JUST A LOT OF DIFFERENT SOURCES THAT WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH THE BACKGROUND.
A LOT OF IT IS BASED ON LAW. WHATEVER THE LEGISLATURE TELLS US, WE CAN AND CANNOT DO.
SO WE'RE ALWAYS PAYING ATTENTION TO THOSE TYPES OF THINGS.
AND SO WE WORK AS A TEAM. OKAY. AND TOBY, YOU ASKED ABOUT YOU MENTIONED IN YOUR INTERVIEW ABOUT FUNDING, WHICH IS A BIG PART OF WHAT THE BOARD MAKES DECISIONS ABOUT.
