IT WAS VERY FUN. AND SO WE'RE IN PREPARATION FOR OUR FIRST MEET, WHICH IS ON MARCH 21ST.
IT'S AT LA CENTER HIGH SCHOOL, AND IT'S A TON OF RELAYS. SO IT'S CALLED THE WILDCAT RELAYS. AND YEAH, I'M SURE IT'LL BE GREAT. I LOVE TRACK SEASON AND SPRING SPORTS.
I KNOW THAT SOCCER FOR BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL AND PROBABLY PRAIRIE, THEY HAVE THEIR JAMBOREE TOMORROW. I KNOW THAT BECAUSE THE TRACK TEAM IS GETTING KICKED OFF THE TRACK AT 3:45, AND THEN I DON'T, I'M NOT EXACTLY SURE WHAT BASEBALL IS UP TO, BUT I KNOW THAT THEY WERE ALL IN THEIR UNIFORMS TODAY, SO MAYBE THERE'S PICTURES OR SOMETHING, BUT SUPER EXCITING.
AND WE ALSO HAVE OUR BIG FUNDRAISER. THIS IS KIND OF DISTRICT WIDE.

NOW, THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE GRADUATED TO REGISTER TO VOTE, AND THEY CAN VOTE IN LOCAL ELECTIONS. AND THEY CAN ALSO VOTE IN LARGER ELECTIONS IF THEY ARE 18 YEARS OLD.
SO I JUST WANTED TO POINT THAT OUT, BECAUSE I THINK MANY STUDENTS DO NOT KNOW THAT THEY CAN REGISTER TO VOTE, AND I THINK IT'S A REALLY GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE WHILE YOU'RE IN SCHOOL, AND YOU HAVE A LOT OF ADULTS AROUND YOU WHO CAN HELP YOU OUT.
SO YEAH, IF YOU KNOW ANY 18 YEARS OLD, ANY 18 YEAR OLDS AND YOU DON'T KNOW IF THEY REGISTERED TO VOTE, MAYBE ASK THEM. AND IF THEY NEED SOME HELP, THEY CAN ASK THEIR COUNSELORS.

SO I JUST WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT THAT. ONE OF THEIR FIRST REPRESENTATIVE EVER, JASON MADDUX, HE IS ACTUALLY PART OF BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND HE'S TEACHING AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.
HE'S A COACH AND HE'S ACTUALLY COACHING THE TRACK TEAM, AND I WAS ABLE TO HAVE SOME INTERACTIONS WITH HIM, AND IT'S JUST REALLY EYE OPENING AND COOL TO SEE HOW REPRESENTING UP HERE IS JUST THE START OF GIVING BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY AND HOW YOU ALSO DON'T NEED TO BE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO GRADUATE AND THEN GO ON TO DO GREAT THINGS. I THINK SOME OF THE BEST PEOPLE I'VE MET THERE ARE ALSO MULTIPLE. THEY HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE WORKING IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WHO ARE FROM BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS, LIKE SHELLY AND I JUST THINK THAT'S SUPER COOL AND EXCITING THAT LIKE, WE GET TO SEE THAT, LIKE IN KIND OF LIVE ACTION.
AND I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS SUPER COOL THAT I CAME TO TRACK LAST MONDAY AND I WAS LIKE, YOU WERE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD? AND HE WAS LIKE, YOU ARE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD. AND JUST TO HAVE THAT RELATIONSHIP, I THINK THAT WAS JUST SUPER COOL AND I JUST WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT THAT.

SO, WHEN TALKING TO EIGHTH GRADERS IS REALLY KIND OF EXCITING TO SEE THE DIFFERENT AND LIKE KIND OF HOW THEY SEE SCHOOL AND HOW THEIR VIEWS ON SCHOOL ARE DIFFERENT THAN WHAT I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS IN EIGHTH GRADE GOING INTO HIGH SCHOOL AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
SO IT WAS REALLY FUN TO SEE THAT AND JUST KIND OF MAKING SURE THAT THEY KNOW, LIKE WHERE THE CLUBS ARE, WHERE THE TEACHERS ARE. I KNOW A LOT OF KIDS. WE DID GET A PRETTY GOOD FEEDBACK FROM THE FIRST DAY LAST THURSDAY.

THE KIDS WERE BROKEN INTO DIFFERENT GROUPS, AND THEY WERE TRYING TO SOLVE PROBLEMS. AND THEY HAD WORKING IN TEAMS TO DO THAT, WHICH WAS REALLY COOL TO SEE.
AND THEN THEY HAD TO VALIDATE HOW THEY GOT THERE, WHETHER THROUGH I HOPE I SAY THIS RIGHT, WHETHER THROUGH FRACTIONS OR THROUGH ESTIMATION.
AND WE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT HOW COMPLEX SOME OF THEM WERE.
AND THE KIDS WERE JUST REALLY WORKING TOGETHER TO TALK THROUGH HOW THEY WERE SOLVING IT.
AND IT WAS REALLY YOU COULD SEE HOW IT WAS REALLY IN ENFORCING WHAT THEY WERE LEARNING.

AND WHAT I LOVED WAS THEY TALKED ABOUT THEIR PLC WORK.
THEY TALKED ABOUT HOW THEY AND THEY SHOWED US HOW THEY GRAPH WITH VERY GREAT SPECIFICITY, WHAT EACH STUDENT IS LEARNING AND WHERE THEY ARE IN THEIR LEARNING PROCESS AND THEN HOW THEY ARE ABLE TO CIRCLE BACK AND HELP STUDENTS INDIVIDUALLY OR IN GROUPS.
AND WITH THAT SPECIFIC WORK WITH THE STUDENTS AND ALL THE TOOLS THEY'VE DEVELOPED TO DO THAT.
AND THEY DID SAY ONE THING THAT WAS REALLY INTERESTING TO ME.
THEY HAD DONE AN EXPERIMENT TO SEE HOW STUDENTS PERFORM IN A MATH EXAM IF THEY'RE TAKING IT ON THE COMPUTER, COMPARED TO IF THEY'RE TAKING IT WITH PAPER, PENCIL.
AND THEY WERE REALLY SURPRISED AT THE RESULTS, THAT THEY COULD DO THE MATH WITH PAPER, PENCIL, AND DO SO MUCH BETTER THAN IF YOU GAVE THEM THE TEST ON THE COMPUTER.
THAT'S JUST THAT DIFFERENCE MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE, WHICH REALLY KIND OF MAKES YOU WONDER A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE STATE TESTING AND THE JUST THE VENUE FOR IT, THAT IT PROBABLY DOES REALLY HAVE AN IMPACT ON HOW KIDS DO MATH.
SO THAT WAS INTERESTING. OKAY. SO I WENT TO CHIEF WHEN I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. SO THAT'S THE MIDDLE SCHOOL I WENT TO.
AND WALKING IN THERE, I COULD FEEL THAT IT WAS LIKE A WHOLE DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERE THAN WHEN I WENT.
AND SEEING HOW LOOKING WITH THE PLC, WITH THE TEACHERS AND SEEING HOW MUCH WORK THEY PUT INTO THE STUDENTS, WAS VERY ENJOYABLE AND VERY EXCITING, KNOWING THAT THEY'RE PUTTING THEIR STUDENTS FIRST AND SEEING THAT THEY'RE WORKING DAY IN AND DAY OUT TO GIVE WHATEVER HELP, WHATEVER WORK THEY NEED, AND KIND OF ALSO BOUNCING OFF MARY WITH GOING INTO THE MATH CLASS AND SEEING HOW THEY DID BETTER ON PAPER THAN THEY DID ON THE COMPUTER, AND SEEING HOW THE STUDENTS WERE WRITING ON THE WINDOWS, ALL THEIR MATH.
AND THEN I WENT AROUND AND CHECKED ALL THEIR PAPERS BECAUSE THEY HAD DONE A WARM UP PRIOR TO US WALKING IN THERE, AND THEY WERE ALL DID IT VERY SIMILARLY, SHOWING THAT BOTH TEACHERS ARE WORKING TOGETHER, SHOWING ALL THE STUDENTS THE RIGHT WAY AND MOST THE MOST REPETITIVE WAY OF HOW TO SOLVE CERTAIN EQUATIONS, CERTAIN QUESTIONS, AND JUST SEEING THAT IT'S VERY REPETITIVE AND BEING USED AGAIN AND

SO THE STUDENTS ARE BEING CONFUSED OF HOW TO WORK WITH MATH AND HOW TO WORK WITH THESE CERTAIN PROBLEMS, AND JUST SEEING ALL THESE STUDENTS WORK TOGETHER WHO MAY.STUDENTS WERE MORE ADVANCED THAN OTHERS. BUT SEEING THAT TWO OF THOSE TEACHERS WORKING TOGETHER, MAKING SURE THAT ALL THEIR STUDENTS ARE ON THE SAME SUBJECT IS VERY, I'D SAY WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT BECAUSE I KNOW A LOT OF STUDENTS WORK FASTER OR WORK SLOWER, BUT THEY PUT IN THE WORK SHOWING WITH THE PLC THAT THEY TRULY CARE ABOUT THEIR STUDENTS AND MADE SURE THAT THEY PUT THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WORK FOR ALL THEIR STUDENTS.
AND THEN ALSO SEEING GOING OFF OF TED WITH THE TECH LAB AND SEEING.
I WENT AND WALKED AROUND AND I NOTICED SPECIFICALLY ONE STUDENT WHO WAS WORKING ON THIS PROJECT THAT WHEN I WAS TALKING TO THE TEACHER, HE WAS SAYING THAT THIS STUDENT IS MAKING ONE OF THE MOST ADVANCED, WHERE IT'S LIKE ONE SIDE WOULD SAY ONE WORD, BUT YOU WOULD FLIP IT AND IT WOULD SAY A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WORD.
AND IT WAS JUST SO EXCITING TO SEE HOW ADVANCED THESE STUDENTS ARE.
JUST AT AN EIGHTH GRADE OR SIXTH GRADE LEVEL.
I THINK THEY WERE THEY WERE SIXTH GRADERS LIKE ME AND SIXTH GRADE.
I COULD HAVE NEVER DONE THAT. I COULD BARELY WORK A COMPUTER RIGHT NOW.
JUST SEEING THESE SIXTH GRADERS WORK ON THESE THINGS AND SEEING HOW ADVANCED AND HOW MUCH WORK THESE TEACHERS ARE PUTTING IN TO GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE SO ADVANCED AND TO GET ALL THESE NEW OPPORTUNITIES WHEN THEY'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL, JUST LIKE THE ROBOTICS PROGRAM, KNOWING GETTING THEM THEIR FIRST STEP OF SOMETHING THAT THEY MIGHT LOVE IN THE FUTURE, AND GETTING THEM KIND OF STARTED INTO MAYBE BECOMING THE CLOVER BOTTS.
MAYBE BECOMING THAT PROGRAM AND GETTING THOSE FIRST AWARDS AND SHOWING THEM THAT THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS MAY NOT BE THE REGULAR SPORTS, BUT IT'S STILL VERY IMPORTANT AND VERY ADVANCED AND VERY JUST VERY SMART.
THEY WERE JUST SEEING ALL THOSE STUDENTS JUST MADE ME FEEL SO HAPPY THAT THEY WERE BEING SHOWN A GROWTH MINDSET AND SHOWING HOW THEY CAN EVOLVE AS STUDENTS IN THEIR ACADEMICS AS WELL AS THEIR HOBBIES. SO YEAH, THAT'S ALL FOR ME.
I'M JUST KIND OF HANGING OFF OF WHAT YOU SAID AT THE END OF KIND OF, I GUESS THE WORK THAT TEACHERS AT ESPECIALLY CHIEF LIKE, PUT IN THEY, THEY LIKE, WHAT WAS THAT WORD THEY INVEST IN THEIR STUDENTS LIKE, SO MUCH.
LIKE I AM AN AVID BELIEVER THAT STUDENTS LIKE I MEAN TEACHERS ARE THE REASON THAT STUDENTS LEARN, RIGHT? AND SO IT'S SO IMPORTANT THAT WE HAVE HIGH QUALITY TEACHERS. AND THAT'S LIKE ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS, LIKE I BELIEVE THAT STUDENTS ARE DIRECTLY INFLUENCED BY THEIR TEACHERS. I BELIEVE THAT SCHOOL CULTURE IS DIRECTLY INFLUENCED BY STAFF. AND THAT'S LIKE ONE OF MY BIGGEST THINGS.
WE WENT INTO MR. MOXLEY'S CLASS AFTER HAVING A TALK WITH HIM AND THE TWO MATH TEACHERS, AND LIKE THE AMOUNT OF ENGAGEMENT IN THAT CLASS, EVERYBODY WAS THEY WERE ALL SO DIALED IN TO WHAT THEY WERE DOING TO THE POINT THAT, LIKE, THEY ALMOST WERE LIKE ANNOYED THAT WE WERE THERE, WHICH IS LIKE A GOOD THING.
THAT'S A GOOD THING, TO BE ANNOYED THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE THERE AND DISTRACTING YOU FROM YOUR LEARNING. AND IT'S JUST, IT'S JUST SO AMAZING THAT WE HAVE STAFF LIKE THAT IN OUR SCHOOLS AND AT CHIEF, LIKE, THEY TOTALLY LIKE, YEAH, THEY TOTALLY WIN THERE. AND THEN THAT'S THE BIGGEST THING THAT AND IN THE MATH CLASS, LIKE THOSE TWO MATH TEACHERS, THEY'RE JUST SO INVESTED IN STUDENTS, THEY'RE ALWAYS TALKING LIKE THEY WERE NOT DISTRACTED BY US BEING THERE. AND THAT IS THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS TO JUST BE FULLY INVESTED IN YOUR STUDENTS.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY IS NOT BECAUSE WE GOT THE BEST TEACHERS. PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES IS A WAY OF DOING SCHOOL THAT IS LIKE, INCREDIBLY, AS A TEACHER, I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT IT IS BECAUSE IT'S PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY, AND THAT MEANS ALL THE TEACHERS ARE WORKING TOGETHER RATHER THAN AN OLDER MODEL WHERE THEY WERE ALL JUST WORKING IN THEIR ROOMS. THEY WERE INTO IT TOO. I THINK THEY WERE A LITTLE BIT ANNOYED WITH US THAT WE WERE INTERRUPTING THEIR TIME, SO WE DIDN'T STAY TOO LONG. I'M JUST KIDDING.

THEY DID VERY WELL. THEY WON JUDGES AWARDS. THEY WON DESIGN AWARDS.
THEY GOT MEDALS AND TROPHIES WHEN THEY DID WIN.
AND I HAD A VERY NICE CONVERSATION WITH RYAN.

SROS, OUR SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS, WHICH WE ARE ONE OF THE ONLY DISTRICTS IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND AS A SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER AT BOTH OF ITS COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOLS. THOSE WOULD BE ELIMINATED.
TEACHER LIBRARIANS WOULD BE ELIMINATED. INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES WOULD BE ELIMINATED.

SO, WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT SPED COORDINATORS, MTSS COACHES, ACADEMIC INTERVENTION SUPPORT COACHES, CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT, THOSE WOULD BE ELIMINATED.
LPNS, OUR LICENSED AH NURSING PRACTITIONERS. WE WOULD BE ELIMINATING DIRECTORS AT DISTRICT OFFICE, ASSOCIATE PRINCIPALS AT OUR ALL OF OUR CAMPUSES AND OUR DEANS AT OUR HIGH SCHOOLS.

ALL DEPARTMENT AND BUILDING BUDGETS WOULD BE CUT BY 25% AND THERE WOULD BE A REDUCTION IN BEHAVIORAL SUPPORTS, INCLUDING BCBAS, WHICH STANDS FOR BOARD CERTIFIED BEHAVIOR ANALYST, RBT'S, REGISTERED BEHAVIOR TECHNICIANS, AND SEL PARAS SUPPORT THAT WE HAVE AT OUR HIGH SCHOOL.
AS I SAID, THAT GETS US TO JUST OVER $20 MILLION.
AND AGAIN, VERY IMPORTANT FOR ME TO STRESS THAT THE REASON WE DO THIS WORK NOW IS BECAUSE IF WE WAIT TO DO THIS WORK AFTER THE LEVY, WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO DO THE WORK. THE ELECTION IS APRIL 22ND.

SO OVER THE NEXT WEEK, TWO WEEKS, SHELLEY AND I ARE MOVING OUT TO ALL OF THE SCHOOLS, AND WE ARE LETTING THEM KNOW ABOUT THIS SO THAT THERE AREN'T ANY SURPRISES.

FOOD RESOURCES HAVE BEEN REALLY BIG. A LOT OF FAMILIES ARE INCREASINGLY FACING FOOD INSECURITY, AND WE HAVE PLENTY OF PARTNERS IN THE AREA WHO CAN HELP WITH THAT.
BUT EVERY DAY WE'RE SEEING THAT NEED INCREASE.

THAT'S AN UNDERREPORTING, AND IT'S A REALLY BIG NUMBER.
SINCE 2020, WE HAVE SEEN OVER 1300 IDENTIFICATIONS.
SOME OF THOSE ARE UNACCOMPANIED HOMELESS YOUTH.
THAT'S YOUTH WHO ARE NOT IN THE DIRECT PHYSICAL CARE OF THEIR LEGAL GUARDIANS.
AND THAT MAKES UP ABOUT A QUARTER OF THOSE YOUTH.
SO 25%. AND THAT'S ACROSS ALL AGES. THAT'S NOT JUST OLDER STUDENTS WHO ARE IN HIGH SCHOOL.
THAT'S ELEMENTARY, THAT'S MIDDLE. WE ALSO SERVE A LOT OF STUDENTS WHO ARE IN FOSTER CARE.
THIS YEAR WE'VE IDENTIFIED 66, WHICH I BELIEVE MIGHT BE OUR HIGHEST OR NEXT TO HIGHEST.
IT IS OUR HIGHEST, RIGHT. YEAH. THAT WE'VE EVER SEEN.
AND AGAIN, UNDERREPORTED COMMUNICATION WITH DCYF CAN BE DIFFICULT.

DESPITE AN EASY, REASONABLE SOLUTION BEING PROPOSED TO NAME AN INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT, THE SLIM MAJORITY OF THIS BOARD AND GAVE A BLIND EYE TO THE NEAR UNANIMOUS OPINION OF THE CITIZENS WHO CAME TO SPEAK BY AMENDING THAT MOTION TO SIMPLY NAME THE HAND-PICKED SUCCESSOR AS THE NEW SUPERINTENDENT.
AND THIS IS DESPITE THE OPTICS THAT I EXPLAINED TO YOU THAT THREE BOARD POSITIONS ARE UP FOR ELECTION THIS YEAR, AND THE SUPERINTENDENT DECIDED TO RETIRE THIS YEAR, AS OPPOSED TO FINISHING THE SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT.
YOU COULD HAVE DISPENSED WITH OUR CONCERNS BY SHOWING YOU'RE NOT BEHOLDEN TO THE DESIGNS OF AN UNELECTED BUREAUCRACY BY NAMING AN INTERIM, BUT YOU DID THE OPPOSITE. AND 12% OF LGBTQ PLUS YOUNG PEOPLE ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IN THE PAST YEAR. SOON AFTER I TURNED AROUND FROM MY HOMOPHOBIC AND TRANSPHOBIC WORLDVIEW, I BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE MICROAGGRESSION FROM MY PEERS THAT OPENED UP MY EYES TO MY QUEER CHILD'S PLIGHT IN MY COMMUNITY.

ALL THREE OF MY KIDS WENT TO BATTLE GROUND SCHOOLS AND GRADUATED FROM BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.
SO WE'VE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR A LONG TIME.
I REMEMBER THE STRONG FEELINGS OF THE COMMUNITY OVER THE ACTIONS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD THEN, AND IN THE YEARS SINCE. PARENTS FEEL THEY DON'T HAVE A VOICE IN THEIR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION IN MANY ASPECTS, INCLUDING WHO WILL BE THE NEW SUPERINTENDENT.
CARES CARRIES THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE A QUALITY EDUCATION TO THEIR CHILDREN.
BECAUSE THE FUTURE SUCCESS OF A COMMUNITY IS DEPENDENT ON WELL-EDUCATED KIDS.
THEREFORE, IT'S A REALLY GOOD IDEA TO INVOLVE THE COMMUNITY IN THE SELECTION OF THE SUPERINTENDENT, WHICH VERY WELL MAY BE MISS WHITTEN. SO, THANK YOU.
