>> A REALLY GOOD JOB SHOWING THAT TO US.

>> THANK YOU.

>> YOU CAN COME ALL THE WAY UP IN THE FRONT, TAKE YOUR PICTURES.

COME YOU GET A GOOD PICTURE WHAT PEN.

>> WHAT DO YOU FIND IS THE MOST CHALLENGING, DIFFICULT THING THAT YOU'RE ASKED TO DO AS A LEADER?

>> PROBABLY HAVING TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT TO DO THE RIGHT THING.

LIKE IF MY FRIENDS ARE CHOOSING TO DO SOMETHING WRONG, I'D HAVE TO SAY YOU GUYS SHOULDN'T BE DOING.

>> SO A GOOD EXAMPLE.

>> GOOD ANSWER. ARE YOU DOING ANY OF THE SPORTS AT AMBOY?

>> YES, I'M DOING THE FOOD DRIVE AND [INAUDIBLE] DRIVE AND WHAT IS THAT STUFF?

>> WHAT ABOUT SPORTS?

>> OH, YES, I AM DOING SPORTS.

I DID BASKETBALL, I'M DOING VOLLEYBALL, AND I'M DOING GIRLS SOCCER.

>> WOW, GOOD FOR YOU.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> THANK YOU.

>> GREAT GREAT FOR YOU.

>> THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE].

>> WE HAVE SOME YAKKO PRIMARY SCHOOL FOURTH GRADERS, ELLEN SPARKANIN, AND STEVEN BOLSI.

>> OUR PRINCIPAL, MS. SCORBI. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.

>> WE'VE ALREADY BEEN AGAIN.

THESE GUYS ARE AMAZING, AND I'M SO TO HAVE THEM SPEAKING FOR US TODAY.

GREAT LEADERS AND GREAT EXAMPLES. TAKE IT AWAY, GUYS.

>> HI, MY NAME IS STEVEN BOLSI AND I'M A FOURTH GRADE STUDENT LEADER FOR YAKKO PRIMARY.

I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME THINGS I REALLY LIKE ABOUT MY SCHOOL.

ONE THING, I REALLY LIKE THE STAFF OF YAKKO PRIMARY.

THE TEACHERS ARE REALLY AWESOME AND I'VE HAD A GREAT TIMES WITH THE ONES I'VE HAD.

THE OFFICE IS REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY'RE THE ONES HANDLING ALL OF THE BUSES AND KIDS AND ALSO HANDLING ALL OF THE KIDS THAT ARE GETTING PICKED UP EARLY, AND THE PRINCIPALS ARE NO EXCEPTION.

MS. SCORBI AND MS. IPODO HAVE DONE A LOT FOR THE SCHOOL, AND HAVE DONE A LOT TO REPRESENT IT.

AND SO HAS MR. SIMMONS, THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR.

HE HELPS US LEADERS MOST OF THE TIME, AND HE HELPS US FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO IN ASSEMBLIES AND THE FOOD DRIVE.

AND ALL OF THE STAFF MAKE GREAT CONTRIBUTIONS TO KEEP US 700 STUDENTS SAFE AND BEING RESPECTFUL AND RESPONSIBLE EVERY DAY.

ANOTHER THING HERE LIKE ABOUT THIS SCHOOL IS LEADERSHIP.

EVEN THOUGH LEADERSHIP TAKES TIME AWAY FROM RECESS AND SCHOOL WORK, IT'S STILL REALLY FUN.

AND LIKE WHAT I GET TO BE HUNGER HEROES FOR THE FOOD DRIVE, AND HELPING OUT OF ASSEMBLIES BY GIVING OUT GOLD WARDS OR LEADING THE YAKKO PRIMARY PLEDGE OR THE BEAVER SONG.

LEADERSHIP MEETINGS ARE PRETTY FUN TOO.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS SCHOOL IS ITS HISTORY.

ITS HISTORY GOES BACK A REALLY LONG TIME INTO THE PIONEER TIMES.

EVEN MY GREAT GRANDMA ATTENDED YAKKO SCHOOL.

IT HAS BEEN THROUGH WILDFIRES LIKE THE ACT BURN AND IT HAS CHANGED MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS.

WE EVEN HAVE A MURAL THAT SHOWS HOW IT HAS CHANGED, AND MY GRANDMA CARLA MASSY HELPED MAKE IT.

THE LAST THING I LIKE ABOUT MY SCHOOL IS ITS PEOPLE.

SINCE MY FAMILY LIVES AROUND HERE, MANY OF MY COUSINS ATTEND YAKKO PRIMARY, AND WHEN THEY MAKE A NEW FRIEND WITH A KID IN THEIR CLASS, I MAKE A FRIEND WITH THAT PERSON AS WELL.

THIS HAS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES, AND I MIGHT ONLY HAVE FIVE FRIENDS IF IT WASN'T FOR YAKKO PRIMARY.

AS YOU CAN SEE, I REALLY LIKE MY SCHOOL, AND I DON'T KNOW IF I WOULD HAVE MADE SUCH CLOSE CONNECTIONS WITH MY TEACHERS IF I DIDN'T GO TO YAKKO.

I MAY HAVE LIKED MY TEACHERS ELSEWHERE, BUT I DON'T THINK I WOULD HAVE CONNECTED WITH THEM LIKE I DID WITH MS. MCGRAW, MS. KIMBALL, MS. RHODES, MS. MARCUS, AND MS. MARTIN, ARE REALLY GREAT TEACHERS.

THESE ARE ALL REASONS WHY I REALLY LIKE YAKKO PRIMARY.

FROM ITS CARING STAFF TO ITS PAST AND TO ITS PEOPLE, AND FINALLY, TO THIS EVENING WHERE MS. SCORBI HAS GIVEN ME THE SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TO YOU ABOUT A REALLY FANTASTIC SCHOOL.

>> THANK YOU.

>> NICE ONE.

>> THANK YOU, NICE STUFF.

>> WELL DONE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> DID YOU WANT TO GO NEXT?

[00:05:02]

>> ELLEN.

>> HI. MY NAME IS ELLEN SARK AND I'M IN FOURTH GRADE AND I GO TO YAKKO SCHOOL.

I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL ABOUT THE YAKKO PRIMARY STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM.

I'VE WANTED TO BE IN LEADERSHIP SINCE SECOND GRADE BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN MY SISTER WAS ON THE TEAM.

IT LOOKED FUN AND HARD AT THE SAME TIME BECAUSE LEADERS STAND UP AND REPRESENT ALL THE KIDS IN THE SCHOOL.

WE ARE GOOD ROLE MODELS AND NEED TO MAKE SURE GOOD CHOICES.

WE MAKE GOOD CHOICES FOR THE YOUNGER STUDENTS.

WE HELP AT ASSEMBLY'S MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS FOOD DRIVE AND THE EXPECTATION FAIR.

YAKKO ALSO HAS A SCHOOL FULL OF AMAZING TEACHERS THAT ALL WORK HARD TO MAKE SURE WE LEARN WHAT WE NEED TO LEARN.

YAKKO ALSO HAS AMAZING STUDENTS THAT ARE ALL NICE.

THEY PRACTICE BEING SAFE, RESPECTFUL AND RESPONSIBLE.

I ALSO LIKE HOW WE HAVE LIBRARY CHECKOUT BOOK.

GO YAKKO BEERS.

>> VERY GOOD.

>> THANK YOU.

>> VERY NICE COMMENT. OUTSTANDING. GOOD JOB.

>> VERY NICE. THANK YOU.

ANY QUESTION. QUESTIONS THERE?

>> I WAS GOING TO ASK WHEN YOU GO TO FIFTH GRADE.

ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT THAT, OR ARE YOU GOING TO BE SAD? WHAT DO YOU THINK?

>> SAD AND EXCITED AT THE SAME TIME. [LAUGHTER].

>> GOOD.

>> GOOD ANSWER.

>> ELLEN, YOU AGREE?

>> STEVEN, I WAS VERY INTERESTED IN HEARING ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.

YOU HAVE QUITE A HISTORY THERE AT THAT SCHOOL.

>> WOW, YEAH.

>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING TONIGHT.

>> THANK YOU GUYS. [APPLAUSE] DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER STUDENTS OUT THERE THAT HAVE COME TO SPEAK TO US? HOW ABOUT OUR STUDENT REPS.

>> YOU FIRST.

>> TELL ALWAYS TELLS ME TO GO FIRST AFTER WE HAVE REALLY GOOD STUDENTS COME UP BECAUSE SHE KNOWS THE BARS SET HIGH.

SO SHE WANTS ME TO DISAPPOINT FIRST. BUT IT'S OKAY.

SO A COUPLE UPDATES.

THAT'S A LATE REACTION, HARRY.

SO JUST A COUPLE OF UPDATES AT RIVER HOME LINK, WE'RE PRETTY DEEP INTO OUR WINER GRAMS EVENT, WHICH IS WHERE WE HAVE THE ASB SELLS LIKE TOYS AND TRINKETS AND STUFF LIKE THAT.

TO STUDENTS, AND WE ACTUALLY DELIVER THEM TO THAT STUDENTS CLASS AND WE SING A SONG AND WE WEAR HEADBANDS AND IT'S SUPER FUN.

AND FOUR DAYS INTO THE EVENT ACTUALLY BROKE EVEN TO START MAKING MONEY, AND THAT IS A FIRST FOR US.

SO THAT'S BEEN GOING REALLY REALLY WELL.

PRIMARY KIDS LOVE IT, TEACHERS LOVE IT.

IT'S JUST ONE OF THOSE EVENTS WHERE PEOPLE ARE LOOK FORWARD TO ALL YEAR, ESPECIALLY IN DECEMBER WHEN EVERY IS GETTING DOWN.

THEY WE'RE IN THE DRY SPOT OF SCHOOL WHEREVER IT'S LIKE, IT'S NOT WINTER BREAK YET.

AND SO IT'S BEEN REALLY GREAT.

AND WE HAVE OUR WINTER FORMAL COMING UP ON JANUARY 17.

THE THEME IS NUT CRACKER, EVEN THOUGH IT'S AFTER CHRISTMAS, IT'LL BE VERY FUN.

THAT'S FOR GRADE 7 THROUGH 12 EVEN THOUGH WE'RE K12 SCHOOL.

AND THEN THEATER IS HALFWAY THROUGH THEIR SHREK SHOWS AT RIVER HOME LINK, AND THEY ACTUALLY PERFORMED THEM AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.

GUYS, YOU NEED TO GO TO SHREK.

IF YOU HAVEN'T GONE TO SHREK, YOU HAVE TO GO.

OH, MY GOSH. IT'S SO GOOD.

AND IT'S SO FUNNY, AND I'VE ALREADY BEEN TO TWO SHOWS, AND THEY'VE ONLY HAD THREE SO FAR.

SO IF THAT TELLS YOU ANYTHING. GO TO SHREK.

AND BAIGON HIGH SCHOOL IS ALSO HALFWAY THROUGH THEIR SHOWS OF CLUE, AND I'M ACTUALLY GOING TO CLUE THIS FRIDAY.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE, BUT NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS.

I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING BAD ABOUT IT.

AND BAIGON HIGH SCHOOL, JUST IN OUR DISTRICT IN GENERAL, DRAMA PROGRAMS ARE REALLY GOOD, AND THEY PUT ON VERY HIGH QUALITY SHOWS, AND I KNOW THAT BAIGON HIGH SCHOOL'S BEEN WORKING REALLY, REALLY HARD.

AS FOR SPORTS, WE'RE KNEE DEEP INTO WINTER SPORTS SEASON.

I KNOW FOR BOTH THE HIGH SCHOOLS, WRESTLING HAS LINED UP LIKE SIX REALLY BIG TOURNAMENTS IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS BEFORE.

MOST WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS REQUIRE TRAVEL AND EVEN STAYING OVERNIGHT, SO WE'LL BE SEEING A LOT OF THAT.

BASKETBALL IS IN FULL SWING.

THEY STARTED THE SEASON WITH A RIVALRY GAME, WHICH PRAIRIE WON, AND THEN RIGHT AFTER THAT, BATTLE GROUND WON AGAINST HERITAGE AND THEN LOST ANOTHER GAME.

SO RIGHT NOW PRAIRIE IS 11, AND THEN BATTLE GROUND IS 12.

BUT IT'S OKAY BECAUSE THEY'RE TRYING.

AND THEN WE'RE ALSO NEED IF IT'S LIKE CHEER, WHERE THEY'RE GETTING READY TO DO COMPETITIONS, AND THAT GOES FOR DANCE TOO.

SO THAT'S IT FOR SPORTS.

THEY JUST STARTED AND IT WAS JUST AFTER THANKSGIVING BREAK.

SO THINGS ARE REALLY GOING TO TAKE OFF AFTER THE NEW YEAR FOR WINTER SPORTS,

[00:10:01]

BUT THAT'S ACTUALLY ALL I HAVE TO REPORT, SO.

>> I HAVE TWO PAGES, ONE FOR SOME EVENTS COMING UP AND THEN ONE FOR SPORTS.

BUT AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL, OUR WINTER CARNIVALS COMING UP TODAY NOT TODAY.

SATURDAY FROM 11:00 TO 2:00 P.M.

IT'S A FREE EVENT FOR EVERYBODY IN THE COMMUNITY.

THERE'S GOING TO BE HOLIDAY GAMES AND CRAFTS AND THEN FREE PHOTOS WITH SANTA, THAT'S A GOOD THING BECAUSE YOU GO TO THE MALL AND IT'S LIKE 20 BUCKS JUST FOR ONE PICTURE AND THE PICTURE DOESN'T EVEN COME OUT GOOD.

SO THIS SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD FREE AND IT'S FUN.

IT COMES WITH A LOT OF GOOD STUFF FOR THOSE KIDS TO MAKE A LOT OF GOOD MEMORIES.

THEN NEXT WEEK IS OUR SPIRIT WEEK, MONDAY'S PJ DAY, TUESDAY'S WINTER GEAR, WEDNESDAY'S SIDE KICK DAY, THURSDAYS SWEATER VERSUS FLANNEL AND FRIDAYS IS COLOR WARS.

AND THEN THAT'S OUR DAY WHERE WE HAVE OUR WINTER ASSEMBLY.

JULIA ALREADY TALKED ABOUT THE BOYS BASKETBALL GAME.

WE BE BATTLE GROUND.

AND THEN OUR GIRLS BASKETBALL GAME ALSO BE BATTLE GROUND.

SO THAT WAS A GOOD DAY.

>> IT WAS ALL THE TEAMS, TOO, IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING, BATTLE GROUND GOT WHITE BY PRAIRIE.

BREAKS MY HEART. THAT'S A YEAH FOR ME THOUGH.

>> THEN OUR FOOD DRIVE THAT OUR HOSA CLUB, WHICH IS OUR HEALTH OCCUPATION STUDENTS OF AMERICA CLUB IS STILL GOING ON, AND IT ENDS NEXT WEEK ON THE 20TH, AND HOSA THE CLUB THAT ACTUALLY ORGANIZED IT IS WINNING.

AND THEN FOR SPORTS, THIS ONE'S LIKE TALKING ABOUT OUR FALL SPORTS AND ALL OUR KIDS WHO GOT FIRST TEAM AND SECOND TEAM ALL LEAGUE FOR THEIR OWN SPORTS.

SO FIRST TEAM ALL LEAGUE FOR CROSS COUNTRY, WE HAD FIVE BOYS GO TO FIRST TEAM ALL LEAGUE.

SO SHACKLETON HOYT, TOMMY WISE, ETHAN MCKEL, KEVIN, TIMBELY, AND DAKOTA HOFICK.

AND THEN SECOND TEAM ALL LEAGUE FOR SLOW PITCH, WE HAD TWO GIRLS GO, KYLIE MOORE AND LAUREN BISON.

AND THEN SECOND TEAM ALL LEAGUE FOR SOCCER, WE HAD TWO GIRLS GO, MAYA TAGUCHI AND HAVEY HOSKINS.

AND THEN FOR FIRST TEAM ALL LEAGUE FOR SOCCER, WE HAD THREE GIRLS GO, AVA DANONS, JULES STALEY, AND ELSA BIS. AND THAT'S ALL FOR ME.

>> THANK YOU. SO MOVING ON, WE'LL GO TO COMMITTEE REPORTS AND WE'LL START WITH LEDGE COMMITTEE, AND OBVIOUSLY, TERRY DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING YET, AND I DON'T HAVE A REPORT.

BUT TERRY, WE WILL GET YOU CONNECTED WITH.

>> I'LL HAVE A REPORT.

>> WITH ALL OF THAT. AND AUDIT COMMITTEE.

>> THE AUDIT COMMITTEE, WE REVIEWED THE VOUCHERS THAT THAT WERE BEING PAID.

IT'S ALL IN ORDER, AND WE REVIEWED PAYROLL AND EVERYTHING WAS IN ORDER.

AND WE'RE VERY PLEASED WITH ALL THE HARD WORK THAT THEY DO.

THEY'RE ALWAYS JUST RIGHT ON TOP OF IT, AND IT'S ALWAYS A GREAT MEETING.

>> BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION.

>> NO, THERE'S NO REPORT ON THAT.

>> AND WE DID HAVE A TOUR LAST FRIDAY, BGVA.

SO GIVE EVERYBODY AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT THE TOUR. TERRY HAD A BUY.

>> TERRY HAD A BUY. I GUESS I'LL START.

I WASN'T EVEN I HAD FORGOTTEN THAT WE HAD MOVED INTO THAT BUILDING, SO I GOT LOST INITIALLY WHEN I WAS GOING OVER THERE, BUT I FOUND IT.

AND I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE, BY THE WAY.

BUT WHAT WAS I THOUGHT WAS.

THE WAY THAT THEY HAVE STRUCTURED IT RIGHT NOW IS IT'S AS CREATIVE AS YOU COULD GET WITH THE BUILDING SPACE THAT THEY'RE IN.

LIKE THEY HAD, 5, 06, 7 TEACHERS IN ONE CLASSROOM, ESSENTIALLY.

AND THEY GOT CREATIVE BY PUTTING UP, LIKE, PARTITION WALLS AND TRYING TO CREATE SOME DIVIDED SPACE IN THERE SO THAT THEY COULD ACTUALLY TEACH THROUGH ZOOM AND AND THAT.

BUT YOU'RE STILL HEARING EACH OTHER TALKING, AND SO THEY'RE TRYING TO TEACH THESE KIDS WHEN THEY'RE STILL, LIKE ALL THIS NOISE ON. SO IT'S VERY DISTRACTING.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I GUESS THE POSITIVE I NOTED ON THAT, THOUGH, IS THAT IT FELT LIKE A PERMANENT PLC GROUP IN THERE IS THAT THEY COULD ALWAYS JUST COMMUNICATE WITH ONE ANOTHER, WHICH IS SOMETHING YOU SEE IN LIKE THE CORPORATE WORLD.

AS THEY'RE DOING MORE OF A BULL PIN STYLE WITH CO WORKERS, BUT IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY WORK SO WELL WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO TEACH STUDENTS THROUGH ZOOM.

SO I THINK THAT ONCE WE GET THEM OUT AND INTO THE NEW BUILDING, THAT'S GOING TO BE REALLY BIG FOR THAT GROUP.

SO BUT I'M GLAD TO SEE THAT THEY'RE DOING THEIR BEST TO MAKE IT WORK.

[00:15:02]

>> I REALLY APPRECIATED THREE OF THE THINGS THAT WERE SHARED.

WE MET WITH MATT, THE PRINCIPAL, AND THEN MR. TRAVIS.

WAS THERE ALSO JUST FOSTERING THE JOY OF LEARNING? I JUST THOUGHT THAT WAS SO FANTASTIC.

BEING THE BEST AT GETTING BETTER AND FLEXIBILITY WITH A SMILE.

THEY MENTIONED THAT THEY SERVE STUDENTS THAT MAYBE NEED A DIFFERENT HELP OR A DIFFERENT DIRECTION.

AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS SUPER GREAT, AND I WAS REALLY EXCITED ABOUT HEARING THAT THEY HAVE AN 81% GROWTH.

THE STAFF JUST SEEMED VERY WARM AND VERY FLEXIBLE.

I JUST LOOKED LIKE A REALLY GREAT LEARNING AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT. SUPER COOL.

>> I CAN GO EXT. I DIDN'T REALLY KNOW A LOT ABOUT BATTLE GROUND VIRTUAL ACADEMY BECAUSE OF COURSE, I GO TO A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL THAT'S ALL IN PERSON.

BUT I WAS SURPRISED BY THE AMOUNT OF KIDS ENROLLED FULL TIME AND PART TIME, AND I THINK IT'S REALLY GREAT, LIKE TED SAID THAT THEY'RE BUILDING A WHOLE THEY'RE BUILDING A NEW BUILDING.

SO THOSE KIDS GET AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO BE ABLE TO HEAR THEIR TEACHERS.

HE SAID, A LOT OF TEACHERS ARE PUT INTO ONE CLASSROOM FIVE.

THE MOST WAS FIVE, I THINK THAT WE SAW.

AND THEN IT'S REALLY HARD FOR MAYBE THOSE STUDENTS TO GET THE HELP THAT THEY NEED AND BE LISTENED TO.

SO I THINK THAT BUILDING WOULD BE A VERY POSITIVE IMPACT.

AND ALSO LIKE DEBBIE SAID, THE KIDS ENROLLED ALL HAVE THEIR OWN REASONINGS ON WHY THEY'RE ENROLLED.

SOME KIDS JUST DON'T WANT TO BE IN PERSON.

THEY HAVE A LOT OF MENTAL ISSUES, OR THEY'RE TRYING TO GET BACK INTO IT BECAUSE OF COVID.

AND SEEING THAT BATTLE GROUND VIRTUAL ACADEMY GIVES AN OPTION WHERE I KNOW THEY'VE TALKED ABOUT HOW KINDERGARTENS.

THEY HAVE THAT ONE DAY A WEEK WHERE KIDS CAN GO IN AND BE WITH EACH OTHER AND TALK TO THE TEACHER AND GET THEM THE STEPS GOING INTO IN PERSON FOR THOSE KIDS WHO ARE OR THE PARENTS WHO ARE CHOOSING MAYBE IN THE FUTURE TO HAVE THEIR KIDS ENROLLED IN A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL.

SO I THINK THAT'S A REALLY GOOD OPPORTUNITY GIVEN TO THE FAMILIES IN THAT SCHOOL.

SO THAT'S WHAT I LIKE.

>> ONE THING THAT REALLY STOOD OUT TO ME WAS THAT THEY TEACH SPECIAL EDUCATION ONLINE, WHICH IS NOT VERY COMMON THAT I LEARNED.

I ACTUALLY DIDN'T REALIZE THAT IT WASN'T A COMMON THING UNTIL THEY ACTUALLY SAID THAT WERE ONE OF THE ONLY SCHOOLS THAT DOES TEACH SPECIAL EDUCATION ONLINE JUST BECAUSE IT CAN BE REALLY DIFFICULT.

ONE THING THAT REALLY STUCK OUT TO ME ABOUT BATTLE GROUND VIRTUAL ACADEMY AND HAS IN THE PAST, BECAUSE I ACTUALLY WHEN IT WAS ROL USED TO BE PART OF RIVER HOME LINK, I ACTUALLY TOOK CLASSES THERE IS THAT THEY REALLY WORK HARD TO INDIVIDUALLY WORK WITH EACH STUDENT, WHICH IT'S GROWN A LOT AND I KNOW HOW MUCH WORK THAT IS.

EVERY TEACHER IS ADVISING AT LEAST 130 STUDENTS, WHICH YOU THINK THAT'S LIKE, OH, THAT'S A PIECE OF CAKE.

A LOT OF TEACHERS SEE A LOT OF STUDENTS, BUT IT'S DIFFERENT WHEN IT'S ONLINE, YOU ARE CORRESPONDING WITH THEM, YOU HAVE TO REACH THEM ELECTRONICALLY.

YOU'RE NOT SEEING THEIR FACE, MAYBE EVER, AND NOT ONLY THAT, BUT YOU ARE INDIVIDUALLY ADVISING THEM.

IT'S DIFFERENT WHEN IT'S ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL VERSUS COMPREHENSIVE.

IT'S A LOT MORE PERSONAL.

THE STAFF THERE, THEY PUT A LOT OF EFFORT AND GENUINE LIKE THEY INVEST IN EVERY STUDENT, WHICH I REALLY APPRECIATE AND I KNOW THAT THOSE STUDENTS DO TOO BECAUSE I WENT TO THE BATTLE GROUND VIRTUAL ACADEMY AND GRADUATION LAST YEAR, AND THERE WERE STAFF THERE.

THEY HAVE A SMALL STAFF TEAM, BUT I THINK ALMOST ALL OF THEM SHOWED UP AND THAT WAS REALLY AWESOME AND TOUCHED MY HEART, BUT I LOVE BATTLE GROUND VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

I THINK IT'S AN AMAZING SCHOOL, AND I THINK IT'S A GREAT OPTION.

I THINK IT'S REALLY AWESOME THAT WE CAN REACH A LOT OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE A REALLY HARD TIME COMING TO SCHOOL.

>> I THINK I WOULD JUST REPEAT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WERE SAID.

IT WAS EXCITING TO LEARN HOW MUCH THEY'RE GROWING, THAT THEY'LL HAVE A NEW BUILDING SOON.

I LIKED THAT THEY'RE MAKING IT WORK.

ONE OF THE STUDENTS WANTED TO SHOW HIS NEW PUPPY, AND SO HE BROUGHT IT ONLINE TO SHOW THE OTHER STUDENTS ONLINE.

THEY'RE MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH OTHER STUDENTS.

YOU'RE NOT JUST DOING THIS INDIVIDUAL LEARNING, LIKE YOU MIGHT THINK.

I THINK WHAT IT REALLY AND I CAN'T NOT GIVE MAP'S WIFE A HUGE SHOT FOR THE AMAZING PUMPKIN BREAD AND.

[00:20:01]

SOMETIMES WE GET SNACKS.

THAT ONE WAS SO GOOD.

IT WAS REALLY NICE OF HER TO DO THAT. YOU MISSED OUT.

BUT WHAT IT REALLY MADE ME REALIZE WHEN I LEFT THAT DAY WAS OUR DISTRICT IS PRETTY AWESOME.

WE OFFER SO MANY DIFFERENT STYLES OF LEARNING TO REALLY HELP EACH AND EVERY STUDENT.

THAT WAS MY BIGGEST TAKEAWAY BECAUSE WE HAVE SUMMIT VIEW AND WE HAVE RIVER HOME LINK, AND WE HAVE COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOLS.

WE HAVE MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, BUT THEY ALL COME WITH A DIFFERENT STYLE, INCLUDING BGVA.

WHAT I THINK HASN'T BEEN MENTIONED IS NOT ONLY DOES BGVA WORK OUT IN THAT BUILDING, BUT THEY ALSO HAVE SATELLITE CLASSES AT BOTH PRAIRIE AND BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL WITHIN THOSE CONCEPTS, MAYBE NOT FOR FULL TIME, BUT FOR SOME STUDENTS TO TAKE SOME CLASSES ONLINE.

I JUST REALLY WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO OUR ADMINISTRATION FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN.

THE THOUGHTS AROUND THIS AND THE INNOVATION TO MAKE SURE WE CAN SERVE ALL STUDENTS AND PUT THE RIGHT TEACHERS IN THE RIGHT PLACE AND HAVE THE RIGHT STAFF IS JUST TRULY ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS ABOUT THIS DISTRICT, AND I THINK WE WOULD BE REMISS IF WE DIDN'T MENTION THAT.

>> DENNY OR SHELLY, WANT TO ADD ANYTHING.

>> THE ONLY THING I WAS GOING TO MENTION WAS JUST THE FLEXIBILITY.

I THINK WE SEE THAT WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF OUR VISITS TO ALES.

OUR STAFF THEIR MINDSET IS FLEXIBLE TO WHATEVER THE NEEDS MAY BE AND RESPONDING TO IT.

NOT JUST OUR CERTIFICATED STAFF, BUT OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF.

WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH THEM ON A REGULAR BASIS TO HELP WITH STAFFING AND THEY THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.

THAT'S WHAT WE NEED IN ORDER TO CONTINUE TO MEET THE NEEDS AND CHANGE AND GROW ACCORDING TO THOSE NEEDS.

I JUST WANT TO SHOUT OUT TO THE STAFF FOR BEING WILLING TO MAKE THOSE HUGE MOMENTS IN TIME WHERE THEY'RE TAKING ON ALL OF THESE NEW IDEAS AND NEW THINGS, AND IT'S JUST MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THOSE KIDS.

THERE WERE A LOT OF GREAT THINGS, GREAT PEOPLE THERE, LOVE THAT WE HAVE A MIX OF WHILE IT IS A VIRTUAL SCHOOL, THERE STILL IS AN OPTION FOR KIDS TO COME IN AND GET SOME MEETING TIME IN PERSON AS WELL, WHICH I THINK IS A WONDERFUL OPTION TO HAVE AVAILABLE.

IT'S JUST A TESTAMENT TO THE FOLKS THAT WORK IN THE DISTRICT THAT THEY'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO MEET THE NEEDS, AND I APPRECIATE THAT GREATLY.

>> I CAN JUST SAY YES, TO EVERYTHING.

>> [OVERLAPPING] EVERYTHING, YEAH. SAME HERE.

ONE THING I WILL SAY IS I'M EXCITED THAT KEVIN WAS ABLE TO SHOW US THE PLAN FOR THE FUTURE.

WHAT A GREAT WAY FOR YOU AND MATT TO COLLABORATE AND MAKE IT FIT THAT PARTICULAR SITUATION, WHICH I KNOW IS UNUSUAL.

I THINK THE OTHER THING IS PEOPLE SOMETIMES THINK WHEN THEY THINK OF A VIRTUAL SCHOOL THAT KIDS ARE IN ISOLATION, AND I CERTAINLY DIDN'T GET THAT FEELING THERE.

I FELT LIKE THAT IT WAS ANYTHING BUT ISOLATION, SO REALLY MEETING THE NEEDS OF KIDS IN THAT SETTING, SO A GREAT TOUR.

>> MARY, THERE IS A LEGISLATIVE REPORT.

MAYBE I SHOULD GIVE IT. I JUST WASN'T PREPARED.

EXCUSE ME FOR INTERRUPTING.

>> FEEL FREE.

>> I THINK THE COMMUNITY WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THIS.

I THINK ALL OF US WOULD PROBABLY LIKE TO KNOW IT.

THE NEXT LEGISLATIVE SESSION STARTS IN OLYMPIA ON JANUARY 13TH.

ALL OF US ARE MEMBERS OF AN ASSOCIATION CALLED WSS DA.

IT'S WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION.

THERE'S ABOUT 1,400 OF US ACROSS THE STATE AND WE'RE REPRESENTED BY THIS ORGANIZATION, WSS DA AND INTERACT THROUGH THEM WITH THE LEGISLATURE.

THEY'VE SET THREE PRIORITIES FOR THE LEGISLATURE THAT THEY WANT TO WORK HARD ON IN OLYMPIA THIS YEAR.

JUST FOR INTEREST SAKE, THESE ARE THEIR THREE PRIORITIES THAT WE AS WSS DA CAME UP WITH.

SPECIAL EDUCATION FUNDING IS A BIG PRIORITY THAT WE WANT TO SEE TAKEN CARE OF.

WHAT WE CALL IMSOC, WHICH IS MATERIALS SUPPLIES AND OPERATING COSTS FUNDING.

WE WANT TO SEE THAT IMPROVED.

THEN THE TRANSPORTATION OF STUDENTS IS A BIG ISSUE FOR THE DISTRICTS, AND WE WANT TO SEE SOME HELP THERE.

THOSE ARE THE THREE ISSUES THAT THE SCHOOL DIRECTORS HAVE SET AS PRIORITIES, AND I THOUGHT I SHOULD SHARE THOSE WITH YOU.

>> THANK YOU. WE WILL MOVE ON TO DIRECTORS REPORTS.

[00:25:02]

>> I JUST HAVE AN SCL CURRICULUM UPDATE.

WE'RE MAKING OUR WAY THROUGH THE PROCESS.

THE NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING IS TOMORROW MORNING AT 7:30, AND THEN ALSO THE K4 ACADEMY, WHICH WILL BE AT TOK VALLEY, WHICH I'LL BE ATTENDING. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO.

>> WHEN'S THE ACADEMY?

>> THE 12TH.

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO BOTH OF THOSE ITEMS.

>> I THINK THERE'S ALSO AN ACADEMY TOMORROW MORNING.

I'LL BE ATTENDING THE ONE TOMORROW MORNING, SO.

>> I'LL JUST SHARE THAT CLARK PUBLIC UTILITIES IS PARTNERING AGAIN WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE COUNTY TO ONCE AGAIN DO THE SOLAR CAR CHALLENGE.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN RIGHT NOW FOR OUR DISTRICT.

THIS YEAR, THEY ARE LIMITING TO PRIMARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL.

THEY'VE DONE A FANTASTIC JOB IN THE PAST.

THEY COVER ALL THE COST, AND SO THEY JUST NEED TEACHERS TO WORK WITH STUDENTS TO BUILD THESE SOLAR CARS AND THEY GET RAISE SOME, WHICH IS PRETTY FUN AT THE END, BUT THAT'S NOT THE WHOLE PROCESS.

YOU ALSO HAVE TO DO A REPORT AND ACTUALLY OUTLINE HOW THIS WORK IS BEING DONE.

THERE'S A REALLY GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN A LOT ABOUT SOLAR AND ALTERNATIVE POWER AND HAVE A REALLY GOOD TIME.

THE EVENT IS IN MARCH, WHICH IS ALWAYS FUN.

IF YOU'RE NOT PARTICIPATING, WE TYPICALLY HAVE GROUPS WITHIN BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT COME AND WATCH BECAUSE IT IS A LOT OF FUN.

BUT JUST LETTING EVERYBODY KNOW THAT FOR TEACHERS IN THEIR CLASSES, THEY CAN SIGN UP.

>> I KNOW A FEW YEARS AGO THAT AT LAUREN MIDDLE SCHOOL, THERE WAS A TEACHER THAT HAD A GROUP AND WE TOOK SECOND PLACE. IT'S A BIG DEAL.

>> IT'S A VERY BIG DEAL.

>> WELL, CAM SWEPT ALL THREE.

>> OH, I BECAUSE WE WEREN'T THERE.

>> HERE YOU GO.

>> I JUST WANTED TO REMIND THOSE OF US ON THE BOARD TO BE SURE AND BE INFORMED ON THE LEVY.

THERE'S SEVERAL LEVY INFO MEETINGS STARTING IN JANUARY, AND I KNOW WHEN OUR CONSTITUENTS HAVE QUESTIONS, IT'S GOOD FOR US TO BE ABLE TO ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS.

ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO BE INFORMED AND ATTEND THOSE MEETINGS.

ANY OTHER DIRECTORS REPORTS?

[8. Superintendent and Staff Updates]

WE'LL MOVE ON TO SUPERINTENDENT AND STAFF UPDATES.

>> YEAH. THANK YOU. JUST A COUPLE OF THINGS FOR ME.

WE HAVE TWO SIGNIFICANT PRESENTATIONS SCHEDULED, SO I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE TOO LONG WITH MY SIDE OF THINGS.

I WANTED TO INFORMED THE BOARD IN CASE YOU DIDN'T SEE IT.

SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, TWO, THREE MONTHS AGO, WE WERE ASKED TO LOOK INTO THE DABBLER TIMBER SALE.

I WANTED TO LET EVERYBODY KNOW THAT THAT SALE WAS APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES IN A PUBLIC MEETING ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3RD.

THAT LAND IS GOING TO BE UP FOR FORESTING.

IT'S EXPECTED THAT BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS WILL SEE $400,000-700,000 FROM THE SALE OF THAT TIMBER.

PEOPLE HAVE ASKED ME WHAT WE HAD USED THOSE FUNDS FOR.

I WANTED TO INFORM THE BOARD AND TO ANY OF OUR CONSTITUENTS THAT WE MADE A COMMITMENT SEVERAL YEARS AGO THAT WE WOULD USE THAT FORESTRY MONEY TO FUND SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR ALL OF OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS.

IF YOU REMEMBER IN THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS AGO, IN THE FALL, A LIST COMES OUT, AND THEN PARENTS COULD GO TO FRED MEYER AND GET THE LIST FOR THEIR PARTICULAR SCHOOL AND THEN BUY ALL THE SCHOOL SUPPLIES.

WELL, THEY DON'T DO THAT ANYMORE BECAUSE WE GET THE LISTS FROM THE SCHOOLS DIRECTLY AND BASED ON THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN ATTENDANCE IN CLASS, WE BUY ALL THE SUPPLIES.

EXCUSE ME. THAT MONEY WILL GO TO GOOD USE WILL CONTINUE TO FUND THAT.

THAT'S ONE OF THE WAYS THAT WE USE THAT MONEY.

ANY QUESTIONS ON THE DABBLER TIMBER SELL?

>> THANKS FOR THE REPORT.

>> WITH THAT, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO SHELLY WHITTON AND TEACHING AND LEARNING.

>> WE HAVE A PRESENTATION FOR YOUR BOARD.

I WILL ASK OUR DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SUPPORTS TAMRA SCHEETZ TO COME UP AND DO A PRESENTATION FOR US ON OUR SUICIDE PREVENTION INTERVENTION AND POSTVENTION THIS EVENING.

I ALSO WANT TO THANK WE'VE GOT SOME COUNSELORS HERE.

HOPEFULLY, IF THEY'RE NOT COMING UP, THEY ARE COMING UP.

NO. THEY'RE WAVING.

WAVE. [LAUGHTER] HERE TONIGHT, AND WE'RE GLAD THAT THEY'RE HERE. GO AHEAD, TAMRA.

[00:30:06]

>> GOOD EVENING, BOARD. I'M HERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT A VERY SERIOUS AND VERY IMPORTANT TOPIC FOR US TO DISCUSS.

THAT IS SUICIDE, PREVENTION, INTERVENTION, AND POSTVENTION, AND HOW WE SUPPORT THOSE THINGS IN OUR DISTRICT.

I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I COME BY MY PASSION FOR THIS TOPIC, NOT JUST PROFESSIONALLY, BUT PERSONALLY.

WHEN I WAS 18-YEARS-OLD, MY 17-YEAR-OLD NEPHEW DIED BY SUICIDE.

IT WAS IN THE WAKE OF HIS DEATH.

IT WAS IN THE GRIEF AND THE CONFUSION THAT MY FAMILY EXPERIENCED, THAT I DECIDED I NEEDED TO LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT THIS, AND I NEEDED TO DO EVERYTHING THAT I COULD POSSIBLY DO TO PREVENT ANOTHER FAMILY GOING THROUGH WHAT WE WENT THROUGH.

I'VE TALKED TO YOU BEFORE ABOUT THIS IDEA OF A SINGLE MOMENT IN TIME THAT CHANGES THE TRAJECTORY OF YOUR LIFE.

THAT WAS ONE OF MY SINGLE MOMENTS IN TIME.

IT IS BECAUSE OF THAT EXPERIENCE THAT I DECIDED TO GO INTO SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY AND THAT I STAND IN FRONT OF YOU TODAY.

THIS TOPIC IS VERY NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART, AND I WILL NEVER CEASE TO WORK TIRELESSLY TO STOP IT UNTIL WE HAVE NO MORE YOUTH SUICIDE.

I TELL YOU THAT STORY BECAUSE I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO KNOW WHERE MY PASSION IS ROOTED.

BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, OF THE NINE OF YOU SITTING IN FRONT OF ME TODAY, IT IS LIKELY THAT FOUR OF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED THE DEATH OF A CLOSE LOVED ONE TO SUICIDE.

IT IS SOMETHING THAT IMPACTS ALL OF US.

EVERY DEATH BY SUICIDE AFFECTS 187 PEOPLE, AND IT AFFECTS 18 CLOSE FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS.

IT'S A PROBLEM THAT TOUCHES ALL OF OUR LIVES, AND IT IS SOMETHING THAT WE ARE WORKING TO PREVENT AND TO DO WHAT WE CAN ABOUT.

I WANTED TO GIVE YOU SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM.

WE KNOW THAT SUICIDE IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR YOUTH IN OUR NATION.

I'M GOING TO SAY THAT AGAIN.

IT IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR YOUTH IN OUR NATION.

THE FIRST LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IS UNINTENTIONAL INJURY, THINGS LIKE DROWNINGS, MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS, THOSE THINGS.

SUICIDE IS THE SECOND.

THE STATISTICS VARY DEPENDING ON THE AGE RANGES.

SOMETIMES THEY'LL REPORT IT FROM AGES 8-25, SOMETIMES 15-25, SOMETIMES 13-18.

WITH ALL OF THOSE AGE GROUPS THAT I JUST LISTED, IT DOESN'T CHANGE.

IT IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH.

APPROXIMATELY ONE IN FIVE YOUTH IN OUR COUNTRY WILL EXPERIENCE A MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE AT SOME POINT IN THEIR TEENAGE YEARS.

YET, GIVEN THAT INFORMATION, ONLY 7.4% OF THEM WILL SEEK OUT MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR THAT ISSUE.

SPECIFIC TO BATTLE GROUND.

I REACHED OUT TO THE CLARK COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TO GET SOME INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE FOR BATTLE GROUND AND WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE FOR CLARK COUNTY.

I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR YOU TO HAVE INFORMATION REGARDING THE RATES FOR OUR DISTRICT VERSUS THE COUNTY AS A WHOLE.

THEY GAVE ME THE DATA BACK FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS ENDING AT THE END OF 2023.

WE DON'T HAVE 2024 DATA YET BECAUSE WE'RE STILL WITHIN THAT YEAR.

WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT YOUTH SUICIDES IN BATTLE GROUND, MAKE UP ABOUT 20% OF THE SUICIDES THAT HAPPENED IN CLARK COUNTY.

IN THAT 10 YEAR TIME SPAN, THERE WERE 10 YOUTH SUICIDES IN OUR DISTRICT ATTENDANCE AREA.

IN THE SAME 10 YEAR SPAN, THERE WERE 50 IN CLARK COUNTY.

IT'S ABOUT 20% THAT OUR DISTRICT MADE UP.

FOR REFERENCE, 18% OF THE YOUTH IN CLARK COUNTY LIVE IN BATTLE GROUND.

THOSE NUMBERS ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF OUR POPULATION IN CLARK COUNTY AS A WHOLE.

>> I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU WHAT WE DO ABOUT THIS.

I AM THRILLED AND HONORED THAT WE HAVE A GROUP OF SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS, SCHOOL COUNSELORS, SCHOOL NURSES.

WE HAVE SOME MEMBERS FROM OUR PREVENTION INTERVENTION SPECIALISTS AND OUR SECURITY TEAM HERE WITH ME TODAY TO TALK ABOUT THIS ISSUE.

SOME OF THESE PEOPLE WILL BE REPRESENTED IN DIFFERENT PORTIONS OF THESE SLIDES COMING UP.

MOST OF THEM ARE PART OF OUR DISTRICT'S SMART TEAM, THE TEAM THAT RESPONDS IN THE AFTERMATH OF A CRISIS OF THE LOSS OF A YOUTH OR A STAFF MEMBER.

BUT MANY OF THEM ARE INVOLVED IN OUR PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION EFFORTS AS WELL.

I REALLY WANT TO HIGHLIGHT THOSE PIECES BECAUSE THERE IS

[00:35:02]

A LOT OF HARD WORK THAT IS BEING DONE TO PREVENT THIS PROBLEM, AND I THINK THAT IT'S IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO KNOW THAT.

FIRST, WE'RE GOING TO START WITH PREVENTION.

JEROLYN FRIESEN, WHO WAS THE COUNSELOR FROM PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL, WHEN SHE WAS UP HERE PRESENTING WITH THE SIP PRESENTATION, SHE MENTIONED TEACHING A CURRICULUM CALLED SIGNS OF SUICIDE.

ALL OF OUR MIDDLE AND HIGH-SCHOOL COUNSELORS TEACH SIGNS OF SUICIDE TO STUDENTS IN THEIR SCHOOL.

STUDENTS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL GET ACCESS TO THIS CURRICULUM.

WHAT IT DOES IS IT TEACHES YOU SIGNS TO LOOK FOR, EITHER WITHIN THEMSELVES OR WITHIN THEIR FRIENDS, AND THEN WHAT THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT.

THE PURPOSE IS NOT TO TEACH THEM HOW TO HANDLE THE PROBLEM THEMSELVES.

THE PURPOSE IS TO TEACH THEM HOW TO CONNECT THE PERSON THAT THEY'RE CONCERNED ABOUT, WHETHER IT'S THEM OR A FRIEND, TO A TRUSTED ADULT WHO CAN GET THEM ACCESS TO RESOURCES AND SUPPORT.

WE ALSO TEACH A CLASS CALLED YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID.

THIS CLASS CAME AROUND BECAUSE OF THE FIRST AWARE GRANT, AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'VE REVITALIZED AS PART OF OUR SECOND ITERATION OF THE AWARE GRANT.

ERICK SUKSDORF AND A TEAM OF ABOUT FIVE OTHER PEOPLE IN OUR DISTRICT, AND THEN ABOUT 10 PEOPLE ACROSS OUR COUNTY WERE TRAINED TO BE TRAINERS OF YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID, JUST A MONTH AGO, I BELIEVE IT WAS.

YOU'LL START SEEING ADVERTISEMENTS FOR CLASSES THAT WE'RE OFFERING IN YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID.

THESE CLASSES AREN'T JUST FOR STAFF.

THEY WILL BE OFFERED TO STAFF, BUT THEY'RE ALSO FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS, FOR EMPLOYERS IN OUR DISTRICT, FOR PARENTS, FOR CONCERNED CITIZENS.

ANYBODY WHO INTERACT WITH YOUTH ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE THIS COURSE.

MENTION THE SAME WAY OF SIGNS OF SUICIDE, IT DOESN'T TEACH THOSE PEOPLE HOW TO INTERVENE WITH STUDENTS SPECIFICALLY.

IT TEACHES THEM HOW TO CONNECT THEM WITH THE RESOURCES THAT THEY NEED FROM TRAINED PROFESSIONALS.

IT IS EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS.

IT'S FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH.

WE PROVIDE IN BUILDING STAFF, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT.

OFTEN, OUR PSYCHES, COUNSELORS, AND NURSES WILL PROVIDE THAT IF THERE'S A SPECIFIC NEED AND A SPECIFIC BUILDING.

THOSE OF YOU WHO DO OUR VECTOR TRAINING AT THE START OF THE YEAR MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT WE RECORDED A VIDEO TO EXPLAIN TO STAFF THE PROCEDURES THAT WE HAVE AROUND IDENTIFYING YOUTH WHO MAY BE EXPERIENCING SIGNS OF DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, OR MAYBE SUICIDAL IDEATION, AND WHAT TO DO.

BASICALLY, THE WHAT TO DO IS CONNECT THEM WITH A COUNSELOR, A PSYCHOLOGIST, OR A NURSE.

WE ALSO HELD SOME SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH ACTIVITIES.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH, AND MANY OF OUR BUILDINGS HELD AWARENESS ACTIVITIES TO BRING AWARENESS TO THE EPIDEMIC OF SUICIDE AND TO ALSO HELP CONNECT STUDENTS TO RESOURCES.

THIS INCLUDED AWARENESS AROUND A RELATIVELY NEW PHONE NUMBER, 988.

I WANT EVERYBODY TO REMEMBER THAT NUMBER, 988.

IT IS 911 FOR MENTAL HEALTH.

NINE-EIGHT-EIGHT WILL CONNECT THE PERSON WHO IS CALLING, WHETHER IT'S SOMEBODY WHO IS CONCERNED ABOUT AN INDIVIDUAL OR A PERSON WHO IS CONCERNED ABOUT THEMSELVES, WILL CONNECT THEM WITH A BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SPECIALIST WHO CAN CONNECT THEM TO SERVICES IN THEIR SPECIFIC AREA WHERE THEY LIVE.

IT'S A NATIONAL NUMBER THAT CONNECTS THEM TO LOCAL RESOURCES, 988.

THE NEXT LEVEL OF SUPPORT THAT WE PROVIDE IS INTERVENTION.

THIS IS FOR STUDENTS WHO WE SUSPECT MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING SUICIDAL IDEATION.

IF STAFF NOTICE CONCERNS, IF THEIR GUT IS TELLING THEM THAT SOMETHING ISN'T [NOISE] RIGHT, THEN THEIR JOB IS TO REFER THAT STUDENT TO A SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST, SCHOOL COUNSELOR, OR SCHOOL NURSE.

I KEEP SAYING THOSE THREE, IT'S BECAUSE THOSE THREE ARE THE GROUPS OF STAFF WITHIN OUR BUILDINGS, WHO AS A CONDITION OF THEIR LICENSURE, MUST RECEIVE ONGOING SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING.

THEY'RE THE ONES WITH ONGOING TRAINING TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN NEED.

WHEN THEY RECEIVE A STUDENT WHO HAS BEEN REFERRED, THEY DO SOMETHING CALLED A SUICIDE INTERVENTION QUESTIONNAIRE.

IT TAKES THEM THROUGH A SERIES OF QUESTIONS TO GET A SENSE OF HOW SIGNIFICANT THE STUDENT'S SUICIDAL IDEATION IS.

JUST TO GIVE YOU SOME INFORMATION.

OVER THE LAST SCHOOL YEAR, I PULLED THE DATA AND WE DID 233 SUICIDE INTERVENTION QUESTIONNAIRES ACROSS THE DISTRICT.

TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE.

I ALSO LOOKED AT HOW MANY OF THEM WERE FOR UNIQUE STUDENTS, BECAUSE SOME STUDENTS HAVE MORE THAN ONE THAT WE'VE DONE FOR THEM.

[00:40:05]

WE HAD THEM FOR 176 UNIQUE STUDENTS.

SO FAR THIS YEAR, WE HAVE DONE 158 QUESTIONNAIRES FOR 126 STUDENTS.

I WANT YOU TO THINK OF EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE STUDENTS AS A STUDENT THAT WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO CATCH, THAT WE HAVE RECOGNIZED, THAT WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO CONNECT WITH RESOURCES.

EVERY TIME WE FILL ONE OF THESE OUT, EVERY TIME WE GO THROUGH THAT PROCESS, WE'RE CONNECTING WITH FAMILIES, WE'RE CONNECTING WITH PARENTS, WE'RE OFFERING RESOURCES, AND WE'RE OFFERING TO CONNECT WITH THERAPEUTIC SUPPORTS.

THAT CONNECTION IS WHAT BRINGS IN THE SUPPORT AND THE PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR OUR KIDS.

FINALLY, I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WHAT WE DO IN THE AFTERMATH OF A SUICIDE.

OUR PRIMARY CONCERN DURING THAT TIME AFTER SOMEONE THAT WE KNOW HAS DIED BY SUICIDE, OUR PRIMARY FACTOR IS PROTECTING THE SAFETY AND THE MENTAL HEALTH OF THE STUDENTS WHO KNEW THAT PERSON, ABOUT ENSURING THAT WE'VE DONE WHAT WE CAN TO REDUCE AND REMOVE RISK TO THEM.

WE WORK AS A TEAM AND WE TRY TO IDENTIFY THE STUDENTS WHO ARE MOST AT RISK, AND THEN OUR COUNSELORS AND OUR SMART TEAM MEMBERS WORK TO SUPPORT THOSE STUDENTS.

WE BUILD IN INTERVENTION SUPPORT, SO IT MIGHT LOOK LIKE A DAILY CHECK-IN, IT MIGHT BE A WEEKLY CHECK-IN, IT MIGHT BE AN HOURLY CHECK-IN.

IT JUST DEPENDS ON WHAT THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENT ARE.

WE ALSO CONNECT WITH FAMILY MEMBERS AND LET THEM KNOW OF OUR CONCERN, AND THEN WE BUILD SUPPORTS IN PLACE FOR EACH STUDENT JUST DEPENDING ON WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE.

OUR SMART TEAM IS MOBILIZED.

SMART STANDS FOR STUDENT MOBILIZATION ASSISTANCE AND RESPONSE TEAM.

THAT'S OUR CRISIS RESPONSE TEAM.

IT'S THE GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS.

WE HAVE SPECIFICALLY 52 PEOPLE IN THE DISTRICT WHO ARE TRAINED AS SMART TEAM PROFESSIONALS.

SOME OF THEM ARE LEADS.

I GO AS THE ADMINISTRATIVE LEAD.

WE HAVE A SMART TEAM LEAD WHO'S SUPERVISING THE SMART STAFF THAT WE HAVE IN THE BUILDING, AND THEN WE HAVE ADDITIONAL MEMBERS WHO COME TO BE IN THE SUPPORT ROOM TO TAKE CARE OF STUDENTS WHO ARE COMING IN FEELING THE EFFECTS OF GRIEF.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE TRAINED PEOPLE DOING THAT WORK.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE PROVIDING THE RIGHT SUPPORT THAT WILL BE SUPPORTIVE AND NOT CAUSE FURTHER HARM TO STUDENTS.

THEN THE LAST THING THAT I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU IS THAT I AM PART OF A COMMITTEE.

THROUGH THE CLARK COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EACH COUNTY HAS ONE OF THESE COMMITTEES, AND IT'S CALLED THE CHILD FATALITY REVIEW COMMITTEE.

THIS COMMITTEE REVIEWS THE DEATH OF ANY CHILD IN CLARK COUNTY FROM AGE OF 0-18.

IT'S OUR JOB TO DIG DEEP INTO THE STORY AND TO LOOK FOR FACTORS THAT COULD HAVE LED TO THE PREVENTION OF THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF THIS YOUTH.

THIS COMMITTEE IS MADE UP OF SCHOOL PROFESSIONALS.

IT'S MADE UP OF DOCTORS.

IT'S MADE UP OF NURSES, EMTS.

WE HAVE A VARIETY OF STAFF.

ER DOCTORS, EPIDEMIOLOGISTS, AND MEDICAL EXAMINERS ARE PART OF THIS COMMITTEE.

WE LOOK AT EVERY SINGLE DEATH OF EVERY SINGLE CHILD, LOOKING FOR THOSE UPSTREAM FACTORS THAT WE CAN AFFECT.

IT'S IMPORTANT FOR ME TO SHARE WITH YOU THAT I'M PART OF THAT COMMITTEE.

THOSE ARE REALLY HARD DAYS, I WILL TELL YOU.

I BELIEVE IN THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING.

I THINK THAT IT'S ESSENTIAL FOR US TO BE LOOKING AT THE FACTORS THAT WE CAN INFLUENCE, SO THAT WE CAN HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON THE SCOPE OF THIS PROBLEM.

I WILL LEAVE YOU WITH THAT ONE IS TOO MANY, AND WE WILL NOT REST UNTIL THE NUMBER IS ZERO.

I'D LIKE TO INVITE MY COLLEAGUES TO STAND.

I'D LIKE SOME RECOGNITION FOR THOSE WHO CAME OUT TO JOIN TODAY.

[APPLAUSE] WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE?

>> WELL, I JUST SAY I CAN'T EVEN APPLAUD YOU GUYS ENOUGH FOR THE EFFORT AND WORK THAT YOU'RE PUTTING IN TOWARDS THIS.

I HAVE NO PROBLEM TILL I'M ONE OF YOUR FOUR.

I'VE SUFFERED FROM IT MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, AND THE GRIEF IS TREMENDOUS, AND IT'S OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH ANGER, AND JUST THE FACT THAT YOU GUYS HAVE THE POST-PREVENTION ASPECT OF IT IS HUGE, AND THAT YOU'RE ALWAYS THERE FOR THESE KIDS.

[00:45:02]

>> THANK YOU.

>> I TOO APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ALL ARE DOING.

IT'S HARD WORK.

IT'S HEART WORK ALSO.

BUT WE NEED FOLKS LIKE YOU TO STAND SHOULDER TO SHOULDER, ARM AND ARM, TO HELP THESE KIDS GET TO ADULTHOOD, TO REALIZE THAT IT'S SOMETHING THEY CAN GET THROUGH.

I APPLAUD YOU AND APPRECIATE EACH OF YOU.

JUST TO SHARE, WE RECENTLY LOST SOMEONE TO FENTANYL OVERDOSE, 45-YEARS-OLD.

VERY YOUNG TO LOSE YOUR LIFE.

IT'S HAPPENING TO ALL OF US.

WE DO NEED TO REALLY PUT THOSE FOLKS IN PLACE AND HAVE THOSE SUPPORTS FOR THESE KIDS, SO THAT THEY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL TO GET TO THEIR ADULTHOOD, BE ABLE TO REALIZE IT'S NOT FOREVER THAT THEY'RE HAVING THE STRUGGLE THAT THEY'RE HAVING.

I APPRECIATE EACH OF YOU.

I HOPE YOU REALIZE THAT.

I'M SURE THAT ALL OF US ON THE BOARD HAVE BEEN TOUCHED BY SUICIDE.

BUT WE DO APPRECIATE WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND CONTINUE THE GREAT WORK.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF.

>> THAT IS IMPORTANT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR STORY.

I WAS CURIOUS, ON OUR BADGES, PLEASE, COULD WE TALK ABOUT THAT A LITTLE BIT?

>> IT'S THERE. YOU CAN'T SEE THIS BACK HERE, BUT ON THE BADGES, THERE'S RED UNDER THE BOTTOM HERE, AND IT SAYS NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION LIFELINE, CALL OR TEXT NINE-

>> EIGHT-EIGHT.

>> NINE-EIGHT-EIGHT. I'M SORRY, I'M LOSING MY VISION, I CAN'T SEE, 988.

IT IS ON OUR BACK OF ALL OUR STUDENT AND STAFF IDS.

>> I COULD SHARE ALSO, JUST TO LET YOU ALL KNOW, 988 IS AMAZING.

I'VE USED IT MANY TIMES PERSONALLY.

I HAD A YOUNG WOMAN COME IN THAT WAS GOING TO JUMP OFF THE I-5 BRIDGE, AND 988 LITERALLY SAVED HER LIFE.

I REALLY CAN'T RECOMMEND 988.

THEY ARE JUST FABULOUS.

THEY HAVE GOT THESE FOLKS TOTALLY DIALED IN.

PLEASE USE IT. EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT SURE, USE IT.

CALL. LET THEM TALK TO SOMEBODY, AND HOPEFULLY, HELP THEM.

>> THANK YOU FOR PUTTING YOURSELF ON THE FRONT LINE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I'D LIKE TO ASK YOU ABOUT THE REVIEW COMMITTEE, BUT JUST HOW MANY SUICIDES WERE THERE LAST SCHOOL YEAR, '23, '24?

>> WE HAVEN'T REVIEWED THE DATA YET FOR THE '23, '24 SCHOOL YEAR.

>> WE DON'T KNOW HOW MANY IN BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT?

>> OF OURS.

>> OF OURS?

>> YEAH.

>> FOR THE '23, '24 SCHOOL YEAR? I'M GOING OFF OF MY OWN INTERNAL.

>> I WOULD TRUST YOUR NUMBERS.

>> GIVE ME JUST A MOMENT.

WE HAD FOUR.

>> THE REVIEW COMMITTEE IS REALLY REASSURING.

I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THIS.

THANK YOU FOR SERVING ON IT.

CAN YOU GIVE US JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HOW THAT WORKS? CAN THEY BE CONTACTED DIRECTLY FOR DATA OR THAT THING?

>> IT'S JUST PART OF THE CLARK COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, AND YOU CAN REACH OUT TO THE-

>> HOW MANY ON THE COMMITTEE, AND HOW DO YOU MEET WITH THEM?

>> GOSH. WE HAVE PROBABLY 20-30 PEOPLE.

IT JUST DEPENDS ON THE MEETING.

IT'S [INAUDIBLE], [OVERLAPPING] PROBABLY.

>> ZOOM MEETINGS EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE?

>> IT'S BOTH. WE MEET ONCE A MONTH.

WE MEET IN-PERSON SOMETIMES AND WE MEET VIRTUALLY OTHER TIMES.

IT'S A HALF A DAY MEETING.

>> THAT'S VERY REASSURING TO KNOW YOU'RE DOING THAT. THANK YOU.

>> YOU'RE WELCOME.

>> STUDENT REPS, DID YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS?

>> YOU GO FIRST.

>> THE ONLY THING I WOULD SAY IS THIS IS SO IMPORTANT TO HAVE IN OUR SCHOOLS BECAUSE THERE'S LITERALLY NOTHING LIKE BEING HALFWAY THROUGH A SCHOOL YEAR AND HAVING A FELLOW STUDENT LOSE THEIR LIFE TO SUICIDE.

IT DOESN'T MATTER, MAYBE THEY WERE NEVER IN YOUR CLASS.

MAYBE YOU NEVER SAW THEIR FACE.

EVERYBODY KNOWS ABOUT IT, EVERY STUDENT HEARS ABOUT IT, EVERY STUDENT FEELS IT, AND THERE'S NOTHING LIKE THE FOLLOWING WEEK, MONTH, REST OF THE SCHOOL YEAR WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO SCHOOL, AND IT'S LIKE, EVEN IF NOBODY MENTIONS IT THROUGHOUT THE DAY, THERE'S THIS HEAVINESS, AND IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO PREVENT IT.

I CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW HARD IT IS.

EVEN WHEN YOU DO SPORTS, I GO TO AN ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL, I GO TO A DIFFERENT SCHOOL.

IF THERE'S A SUICIDE AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, OR IF THEY DID SPORTS,

[00:50:01]

EVERYBODY KNOWS ABOUT IT, IT TOUCHES THEM, AND IT IS SO POWERFUL TO INTERVENE.

EVEN IF YOU THINK, BUT WHAT IF THEY'RE NOT? I'D RATHER INTERVENE EARLY AND HAVE SOMEBODY GET MAD AND ANNOYED AT ME THAN INTERVENE TOO LATE.

BECAUSE WHEN IT'S TOO LATE, THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO. THAT'S ALL I'LL SAY ABOUT THAT.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THIS SUICIDE TAKES HAS AFFECTED MY FAMILY'S LIFE, AND IN CERTAIN WAYS, MENTAL HEALTH HAS BEEN AN ISSUE FOR MY FAMILY.

THEN JUST KNOWING THAT THERE'S SO MANY RESOURCES FOR THESE FAMILIES TO SEE MENTAL HEALTH IN SUCH A DIFFERENT WAY, BECAUSE I KNOW I'VE HAD FAMILY MEMBERS AND EVERYTHING BELIEVE THAT MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE WASN'T A THING.

THEN SEEING THAT THIS IS GIVEN OUT TO OUR DISTRICT IS SO GOOD TO SEE BECAUSE I KNOW IT AFFECTS A LOT OF PEOPLE, AND A LOT OF FAMILIES DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S SUCH A BIG DEAL AND THAT IT IS A REAL THING, AND SO KNOWING THAT THIS IS GIVEN TO OUR DISTRICT AND KNOWING THAT OUR NUMBERS ARE PRETTY BIG AND THAT HAVING THESE RESOURCES ARE GOOD TO LOWER THOSE NUMBERS. THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY.

>> THANK YOU FOR SHARING.

>> IT'S ALL. THANK YOU.

>> I JUST WANTED, PERSONALLY, TO THANK ALL OF THE PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE, OUR COUNSELORS, OUR PSYCHOLOGISTS, OUR NURSES, OUR INTERVENTION SPECIALISTS, OUR SECURITY STAFF, JUST THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO.

I AM JUST STRUCK BY SOME OF THE NUMBERS THAT YOU SAID, AND I'M STRUCK ESPECIALLY BY THE NUMBER OF SUICIDE.

THE PAPERWORK THAT WE'VE COMPLETED, I THINK YOU SAID THIS YEAR ALREADY IT'S 150.

>> HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT.

>> A HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT.

>> ACTUALLY, 159. WE GOT ONE A FEW MINUTES AGO.

>> A HUNDRED AND FIFTY-NINE.

>> WHAT STRIKES ME IS THAT WE ALL KNOW WHEN A SUICIDE OCCURS.

BUT WHEN A SUICIDE IS PREVENTED THERE'S NO CONFETTI THAT FALLS FROM THE SKY AND NO BELLS AND WHISTLES GO OFF.

IT JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN.

A LOT OF THAT WORK GOES MAYBE UNNOTICED, UNAPPRECIATED.

I JUST WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW THAT 158 KIDS WERE LESS THAN, I THINK WE'RE 80 DAYS INTO THE SCHOOL YEAR.

THAT'S AN INCREDIBLE NUMBER OF KIDS THAT WE HAVE PUT ON THE RADAR SO THAT FAMILIES CAN HELP THEM AND OTHER STAFF CAN HELP THEM AND SUPPORTS CAN WRAP AROUND THEM.

IT'S JUST INCREDIBLE WORK THAT GOES UNNOTICED.

AGAIN, JUST FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, AND I KNOW I SPEAK FOR ALL OF US UP HERE.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

>> THE WORK YOU DO IS SO INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT AND JUST THANK YOU.

>> BY EXTENSION, THE STAFF AS A WHOLE.

>> YEAH. YEAH.

>> YES.

>> JUST I GUESS THAT TOO, JUST NOT YOUR TEAM, THANK YOU, THANK YOUR TEAM, BUT ALSO THE WORK YOU'RE DOING TO EDUCATE ALL OF US AND EDUCATE THE STAFF SO THAT WE CAN KNOW AND WE CAN BE THERE AND BE A SUPPORT.

I GUESS ONE OF THE THINGS I WOULD SAY TAMRA QUESTION I HAVE FOR YOU.

WOULD THIS ALL BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE AWARE GRANT?

>> NOT ALL OF IT, NO.

SO A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT WE SPECIFICALLY FUNDED THROUGH THE AWARE GRANT WOULD BE THE YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING, SO GETTING THOSE 10 ADDITIONAL PEOPLE TRAINED TO TRAIN OTHERS.

THE GRANT IS ALSO ABLE TO MAKE THAT CLASS AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE AT NO CHARGE, WHEREAS NORMALLY WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE MATERIALS OR WE'D HAVE TO CHARGE FOR THE MATERIALS THAT COME WITH THE CLASS.

WE HAVE THE CARE SOLACE APP THAT WE'VE PURCHASED WITH AWARE FUNDS AND CARE SOLACE IS A CONNECTION TO MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES.

IT TAKES ALL OF THE LABORIOUS WORK THAT A FAMILY HAS TO DO TO NAVIGATE THAT LABYRINTHINE SYSTEM.

IT TAKES THAT WORK ON FOR THEM.

THAT'S ALL AVAILABLE THROUGH THE AWARE GRANT.

I ACTUALLY MADE SOME NOTES AS I WAS GOING THROUGH WHAT WAS AWARE.

>> WELL, AND I WOULD JUST SAY WITH THAT, TOO, IT'S DIFFICULT ENOUGH, BUT FOR SOME FAMILIES, THAT'S A CRITICAL PIECE BECAUSE THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO IT ON THEIR OWN.

>> I KNOW A LOT OF OUR FAMILIES HAVE TRIED TO NAVIGATE THE SYSTEM, AND IT'S JUST SO CUMBERSOME AND THEY'RE IN A MOMENT OF NEED.

[00:55:01]

THEY'RE EXPERIENCING CRISIS, AND I'M SAD TO REPORT THAT A LOT OF THEM GIVE UP BECAUSE IT'S JUST TOO DIFFICULT TO NAVIGATE.

CARE SOLACE TAKES CARE OF THAT FOR THEM.

ALSO, WE HAVE SOME MENTAL HEALTH THERAPISTS THAT ARE IN OUR SCHOOL BUILDINGS.

WE HAVE ONE FULL-TIME AT PRAIRIE.

WE HAVE ONE FULL TIME AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, AND WE ALSO HAVE A THIRD ONE FULL-TIME UP AT [INAUDIBLE], THOSE ARE PAID FOR BY THE GRANT.

>> THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CLARIFICATION.

>> I JUST WANTED TO LESS, I KNOW I KEEP SAYING, I JUST WANT TO I JUST WANTED TO.

BUT I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT TWO THINGS.

NUMBER 1, THE SMART TEAM.

THERE'S A COUNTY-WIDE SMART TEAM.

BUT I KNOW THAT THE SMART TEAM IS BASED.

THE COUNTY-WIDE SMART TEAM IS BASED ON THE SMART TEAM THAT WAS FIRST PUT IN PLACE IN BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THAT'S HOW GOOD THE MODEL IS.

WE HAVE THE BEST SMART TEAM RESPONSE IN THE COUNTY BY FAR.

THEN I ALSO WANTED TO POINT OUT THAT THE PAPERWORK ASSOCIATED THAT WE DO.

WE WERE ONE OF THE MODEL DISTRICTS FOR THE ENTIRE STATE IN TERMS. WE WERE ONE OF THE FIRST ONES TO HAVE HAVE A COMPLETION OF THE FORM THAT WE WERE GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF THESE STEPS WERE TAKEN, THAT THAT PARENTS WERE NOTIFIED AND WE WERE ONE OF THE FIRST ONES IN THE STATE TO DO THAT AND OTHERS FOLLOWED OUR FRAMEWORK FOR THAT.

WE HAVE A LOT TO BE PROUD OF IN TERMS OF OUR EFFORTS.

>> YES.

>> I THINK THAT INCREASE IN NUMBER AS WELL, THIS YEAR ALREADY WITH 158 IS A SIGN OF THE WORK, THE PREVENTION WORK THAT OUR COUNSELORS ARE DOING WITH THOSE LESSONS AT BOTH THE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL.

BECAUSE I THINK WE SHOULDN'T SEE THAT AS A BAD SIGN.

WE SHOULD SEE THAT AS A GOOD SIGN, BECAUSE REMEMBER, THEY SAID 7.4% OF PEOPLE NEVER REACH OUT, NEVER SEEK HELP.

THE FACT THAT WE'RE GETTING MORE REFERRALS IS A GOOD THING BECAUSE WITHOUT THAT, WE DON'T KNOW.

I DO THINK TO ITZEL'S POINT, I DO THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT THE STIGMATISM OF MENTAL HEALTH GET REMOVED SO THAT PEOPLE FEEL MORE FREE TO REACH OUT FOR HELP, BECAUSE I THINK THAT'S A BIG PART OF THE HESITATION IS THAT PEOPLE THINK THEY'RE ALONE IN IT AND THEY DON'T REALIZE THAT THERE ARE OTHERS THAT ARE FEELING THE SAME WAY AND GOING THROUGH THE SAME THINGS THAT CAN HELP THEM AND PEOPLE THAT CAN HELP THEM THROUGH IT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, TIM.

>> THANK YOU.

>> WE DO NOT HAVE A HUMAN RESOURCES REPORT TONIGHT.

I'M GOING TO SKIP YOU FOR A SECOND. REAL QUICK.

MR. JOMA OPERATIONS REPORT.

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR COMING, YOU GUYS.

>> THAT WAS SOBERING. OUR DISTRICT STADIUM SCOREBOARD SHOULD BE WRAPPING UP THIS WEEK.

OUR OPERATIONS BUILDING IS GETTING READY TO POUR THE SLAB OUT THERE.

YOU CAN SEE IT'S MOVING ALONG.

IN REGARDS TO THE BATTLE GROUND VIRTUAL ACADEMY BUILDING IN THE LAST FRIDAY, THAT DESIGN WAS PRETTY UNIQUE AND IT WAS GOOD WORKING WITH THEM AND WE'RE ABOUT READY TO GO IN FOR PERMITS ON THAT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, KEVIN. THEN, MANDA WILL SLIDE OVER TO YOU FOR COMMUNICATIONS.

>> GOOD EVENING. GET A COUPLE OF QUICK THINGS TO SHARE WITH YOU.

AS MARY MENTIONED EARLIER, WE HAVE A SLATE AND DENNY MENTIONED LAST MEETING WITH A SLATE OF PRESENTATIONS REGARDING OUR UPCOMING EDUCATION AND OPERATIONS LEVY.

THESE ARE GOING TO BE HELD AT EVERY CAMPUS, AND WE ALSO HAVE A SPECIAL PRESENTATION SLATED FOR RUSSIAN AND SPANISH SPEAKERS, AND THAT WILL BE ON JANUARY 23.

SO ALL THIS INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE, BUT I WANTED TO SHOW YOU THE FULL SCHEDULE.

EACH PRESENTATION WILL INCLUDE CHILDCARE AND LIGHT REFRESHMENTS AS WELL.

THE NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. TEACHER JASON FOSTER AND HIS STUDENTS ARE WORKING HARD TO BROADCAST DIFFERENT WINTER GAMES, STARTING WITH THE BATTLE GROUND VERSUS WASHOUGAL GIRLS BASKETBALL GAME TONIGHT, FOLLOWED BY THE BOYS BASKETBALL GAME AGAINST EVERGREEN ON DECEMBER 17.

YOU CAN FIND THAT SCHEDULE ON OUR WEBSITE AS WELL.

THEN I ALSO WANTED TO MAKE A QUICK MENTION OF THE INDUSTRY FAIR.

IT'S ALMOST THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN.

THE ORGANIZERS ARE LOOKING FOR VENDORS TO SIGN UP AND RESERVE A FREE TABLE AT THE FAIR, IF INTERESTED.

[01:00:02]

THIS IS A GREAT EVENT THAT ATTRACTS USUALLY MORE THAN 700 PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER STUDENTS AND PARENTS, BUT ALSO COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND IT'S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ANY ORGANIZATION OR EMPLOYER THAT MAY BE HIRING TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE WHO MIGHT POTENTIALLY BECOME WORKERS.

THAT INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE AS WELL. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, MANDA. THANK YOU FOR BEING PATIENT, MICHELLE.

I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO MICHELLE SCOTT, WHO IS GOING TO GIVE US END OF THE YEAR FINANCIAL REPORT.

>> WELL, AS YOU KNOW, THROUGH YOU RECEIVED THE MONTHLY BUDGET STATUS REPORTS ON OUR FINANCIAL STATUS.

BUT AT THE END OF THE YEAR, WHEN IT COMES TO CLOSING, THERE'S A LOT OF STEPS THAT WE NEED TO GO THROUGH.

WE HAVE LONG CHECKLISTS, LOTS OF PEOPLE DOING WORK, AND WE HAVE UNTIL ABOUT MID NOVEMBER TO COMPLETE OUR REPORT AND SO THESE ARE GOING TO BE SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 23/24 SCHOOL YEAR END OF THE YEAR FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.

JUST SOME HIGHLIGHTS HERE, WE HAVE STUDENT ENROLLMENT INCREASED FROM 22/23, AND THAT IS A GOOD THING WE ARE GROWING AND WE ARE CONTINUING TO GROW, AND ENROLLMENT DOES DRIVE OUR FUNDING SOURCE.

SO THAT IS GOOD FOR AS WE CONTINUE ON WITH SERVICES AND PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS.

LAST YEAR, WE HAD PANDEMIC RECOVERY FUNDING THAT DID NOT CONTINUE THROUGH TO THE 24/25 SCHOOL YEAR, AND WE HAVE RECEIVED OVER 40 MILLION IN PANDEMIC FUNDING SINCE 2020 RECOVERY.

CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS CONTINUED IN 23/24 SCHOOL YEAR.

WE SPENT $2.1 MILLION FOR CURRICULUM.

THEN WE USED FUND BALANCE, AND WE USED ABOUT $2.35 MILLION OF OUR ASSIGNED AND UNASSIGNED FUND BALANCE.

HERE'S OUR ENROLLMENT, 12,074.

FTE, FTE IS FOR OUR FULL TIME EQUIVALENT, AND THIS IS BASED ON OUR ANNUAL AVERAGES.

OUR ENROLLMENT IS UP 198 FTE FROM PRIOR YEAR.

WE ALSO LOOK AT OUR ENROLLMENT.

THAT WAS FOR BASIC EDUCATION AND ALTERNATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

WE ALSO LOOK AT SOME OTHER ENROLLMENTS THAT DRIVE FUNDING AND SPECIAL EDUCATION, RUNNING START AND OPEN DOORS ALSO WERE UP.

SO WE HAD A TOTAL OF ONE AND RUNNING START, 10 AND OPEN DOORS, AND SPECIAL EDUCATION WAS 113.

SPECIAL EDUCATION WAS ABOUT 98, AND THEIR HEAD COUNT WAS UP OVER BUDGET.

THAT WAS PRETTY SIGNIFICANT.

IT GREW QUITE A BIT FROM WHAT WE HAD BUDGETED.

AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE ALTERNATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE, THIS IS THE RESULT OF THE BGVA COMING ONLINE.

WE HAD MORE STUDENTS THAT GREW IN THE ALE REALM.

I DID PUT A NOTE HERE.

WE ARE STILL 372 BELOW OUR PRE PANDEMIC ENROLLMENT, BUT WE ARE AGAIN GROWING, SO WE'RE GETTING CLOSER.

OUR GENERAL FUND REVENUES CAME IN AT 221,077,625.

AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE FUNDING SOURCES THERE, IT'S BROKEN UP INTO CATEGORIES.

WE HAVE OUR STATE APPORTIONMENT, WHICH IS 57% OF OUR FUNDING.

STATE SPECIAL PURPOSE, AND THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING LIKE TRANSPORTATION.

IT WOULD BE BILINGUAL PROGRAM, LOTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS.

IT ALSO INCLUDES SPECIAL EDUCATION IN THERE.

THAT'S 20% OF OUR FUNDING, SO 77% OF OUR REVENUE IS FUNDING FROM THE STATE.

AS YOU CAN SEE, OUR LOCAL LEVY FUNDING CAME IN AT 13% OF OUR REVENUE SOURCE.

THEN WE HAVE OUR LOCAL NON TAX CATEGORY, WHICH IS FOOD SERVICE RECEIPTS.

IT COULD BE ANY TYPE OF COLLECTION THAT WE'RE TAKING IN LOCAL RECEIPTS HERE.

NEXT IS OUR FEDERAL PROGRAMS WAS 8% OF OUR FUNDING,

[01:05:03]

AND THEN THERE'S SOME OTHER CATEGORIES THERE THAT ARE VERY SMALL CATEGORIES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH OTHER ENTITIES AND OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT? MOVING ON TO OUR GENERAL FUND EXPENDITURES.

THIS IS BY OBJECT.

THIS IS ONE WAY THAT WE LOOK AT OUR EXPENDITURES.

WE'LL LOOK AT IT IN A DIFFERENT WAY IN THE NEXT SLIDE.

BUT WE'RE LOOKING AT THE TOTAL EXPENDITURES BY OBJECTS FOR 221 MILLION, 262,000, $10.

AS YOU CAN SEE, BY LOOKING AT IT BY OBJECT, WE HAVE THE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF CERTIFICATED SALARIES, CLASSIFIED SALARIES, BENEFITS, SUPPLIES, PURCHASE SERVICES, TRAVEL, AND CAPITAL OUTLAY.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT ABOUT 80% OF OUR EXPENDITURES ARE FOR SALARIES AND BENEFITS.

WHILE PURCHASE SERVICES IS PRETTY LARGE THERE, IT ENCOMPASSES OUR CONTRACTED TRANSPORTATION NUTRITION SERVICES.

IF YOU LOOKED AT THOSE LABOR DOLLARS THAT OTHER SCHOOLS MAY NOT CONTRACT FOR, THAT LABOR IS INCLUDED IN THE PURCHASE SERVICES.

IT'S NOT INCLUDED IN OUR SALARIES AND BENEFITS.

SO IT WOULD BE GREATER, IT'D BE MORE AROUND 85%.

SO THE POINT IS THAT VERY LITTLE OF OUR BUDGET IS DISCRETIONARY.

IT'S PURCHASE SERVICES INCLUDE TRANSPORTATION AS 12.1 MILLION FOOD SERVICE OPERATIONS, 3.6 MILLION, RUNNING START, 2.6 MILLION AND UTILITIES INSURANCE BY 0.9 MILLION DOLLAR SO 24.2 MILLION DOLLAR OF THOSE PURCHASE SERVICES ARE THINGS THAT ARE PRETTY SET THAT WE WE NEED TO TURN ON THE LIGHTS, WE NEED TO PAY OUR INSURANCE.

I'LL MOVE ON TO THE NEXT SLIDE.

THIS IS ANOTHER WAY THAT WE LOOK AT IT, AND I'M SORRY, IT'S PROBABLY A LITTLE BIT HARD TO READ FROM WHERE YOU'RE AT, BUT YOU HAVE IT I THINK ON YOUR COMPUTER THERE.

SO THIS IS OUR GENERAL FUND EXPENDITURES BY ACTIVITY, AND I'VE CONSOLIDATED THE ACTIVITIES TO HELP JUST GROUP THEM TOGETHER.

WHEN WE LOOK AT SOME OF OUR ACTIVITIES, WE HAVE OUR DISTRICT WIDE SUPPORT, WHICH ENCOMPASSES OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS, SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE, THE BUSINESS OFFICE, HR, PUBLIC RELATIONS, INSTRUCTION SUPERVISION, AND MAINTENANCE SUPERVISION.

YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE IS SOME OF THOSE, YOU MIGHT SAY THAT THEY ARE REALLY SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOLS AS WELL, BUT THE NEXT CATEGORY THAT I'M GOING TO GO TO IS OUR SCHOOL SUPPORT IS 75%, AND THAT ENCOMPASSES LIBRARIES, SCHOOL OFFICES, GUIDANCE COUNSELING, HEALTH AND SAFETY, AND TEACHING.

THEN 7.9% OF OUR FOOD SERVICES AND TRANSPORTATION.

YOU CAN SEE THAT IN THE PURPLE THERE AND THEN WE HAVE OPERATIONS, GROUND, MAINTENANCE UTILITIES, AND INSURANCE 8.7.

YOU CAN SEE IN THE PRIOR SLIDE, WHEN I WAS SHOWING TRANSPORTATION AND FOOD SERVICES, THAT WAS ONLY THE PURCHASE SERVICE, PART OF IT.

THERE ARE OTHER EXPENDITURES IN TRANSPORTATION AND FOOD SERVICE THAT ARE INCLUDED IN THIS ONE.

THAT'S WHY THERE'S A DIFFERENCE IN THAT NUMBER THERE AND THEN TECHNOLOGY AND PRINT SHOP AND WAREHOUSE AND MOTOR PULL 1.7%.

AND THEN THERE'S A SMALL AMOUNT FOR CAPITAL LEASES.

THOSE ARE AS YOU CAN SEE, THOSE ARE ALL THE DIFFERENT CONSOLIDATED CATEGORIES THAT WE HAVE FOR EXPENDITURES TO SHARE WITH YOU?

>> QUESTION?

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU. ON THIS, WE'VE GOT THIS TEACHING 126 MILLION. IS THAT RIGHT?

>> ONE TWENTY.

>> I DON'T HAVE MY GLASSES ON.

>> ONE TWENTY EIGHT. I HAVE [INAUDIBLE] TOO.

>> SO THE PREVIOUS SLIDE, I'M LOOKING FOR THIS 128 TEACHING IN THE PREVIOUS SLIDE, AND I SEE CERTIFICATED AS 96 MILLION AND CLASSIFIED AS 34 MILLION.

THAT'S GETTING CLOSE TO THAT SAME NUMBER.

IS THAT WHERE THAT NUMBER IS AT?

>> I'M SORRY. SAY THAT AGAIN.

>> I'M LOOKING AT THE PREVIOUS SLIDE.

THIS SLIDE RIGHT HERE BY OBJECT? YES. FOR 128 MILLION.

CERTIFICATED WOULD OBVIOUSLY HAVE A LOT TO DO WITH TEACHERS.

THAT'S 96.

>> BUT THAT COULD ALSO INCLUDE.

[01:10:02]

>> IF YOU ADD THE 34 TO THAT, IS THAT THAT FIGURE?

>> NO, IT IS NOT.

>> OKAY.

>> BECAUSE TEACHING ENCOMPASSES A LOT MORE THAN JUST SALARIES AND BENEFITS.

>> CERTIFICATE COULD BE CERTIFICATED ADMINISTRATORS.

>> JUST SUMMARIZE WHAT TEACHING WOULD INCLUDE. THERE'S MORE THAN SALARIES.

>> IT WOULD BE SCHOOL SUPPLIES, CURRICULUM, ANYTHING GOING INTO THE CLASSROOM, BASICALLY.

>> PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

>> PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. YEAH.

>> IT'S NEVER THAT EASY, TERRY.

>> THAT'S WHY I WAS TRYING TO MAKE IT EASY.

>> YOU WANT TO MAKE IT EASY.

>> NICE. SHE SAID THAT THE PREVIOUS ONE WAS SORTED BY OBJECT, AND THIS ONE IS SORTED BY ACTIVITY.

>> THANK YOU.

>> TO SUMMARIZE OUR TOTAL REVENUE MINUS OUR EXPENDITURES, AND WE DO HAVE A TRANSFER OUT TO THE DEBT SERVICE FUND FOR A DEBT PAYMENT THAT'S NON-VOTED DEBT.

EXPENDITURES WERE GREATER THAN REVENUE BY 510,986.

NEXT, I'M GOING TO GO THROUGH OUR GENERAL FUND BALANCE.

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SLIDE AND I WANT TO TAKE SOME TIME TO GO THROUGH IT.

BUT AFTER THIS SLIDE, I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT ALSO ACTUALS TO BUDGET.

I WANTED TO KEEP WHERE WE LANDED IN ONE SECTION AND THEN I'LL JUST TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE ACTUALS TO BUDGET.

IN OUR FUND BALANCE, WE HAVE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES THAT ARE PART OF OUR POLICY FOR FUND BALANCE AND ALSO FOLLOWS THE ACCOUNTING MANUAL FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

ALL THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS HAVE THE SAME CATEGORIES.

OUR FIRST CATEGORY IS OUR NONSPENDABLE AND RESTRICTED.

WHAT THAT'S MADE UP OF IS, IT INCLUDES OUR PREPAID EXPENDITURES FOR EXPENDITURES THAT WE ARE GOING TO CONSUME AT A LATER TIME, LIKE A SUBSCRIPTION THAT MAY BE SIX YEARS, WE WILL NOT EXPENSE AT ALL IN ONE YEAR.

WE WILL EXPEND IT OVER THE SIX YEARS.

INVENTORY CATEGORICAL PROGRAMS. WHEN I SAY CATEGORICAL PROGRAMS, THAT MEANS REVENUE WE RECEIVED FROM THE STATE THAT WE NEED TO HOLD ONTO UNTIL IT'S SPENT OUT.

THERE IS ALLOWABLE CARRYOVER OF CERTAIN CATEGORICAL PROGRAMS LIKE OUR LOT PROGRAM, CTE.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH THOSE IS THAT THEY JUST REMAIN IN THOSE FUND BALANCE CATEGORIES.

AS YOU CAN SEE, THE NONSPENDABLE DID INCREASE FROM '22-'23, AND THAT'S A RESULT OF OUR CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS BECAUSE WE HAVE A LOT OF SUBSCRIPTIONS THAT WERE PART OF THE CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS SO THAT INCREASED THAT CATEGORY FROM THE PRIOR YEAR.

YOU CAN SEE IT'S BEEN BUILDING UP.

BECAUSE OF THOSE ADOPTIONS, THERE'S A LOT OF PREPAID.

YOU CAN SEE THAT WE'VE DONE A LOT OF CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.

THEN OUR RESTRICTED ALSO INCREASED ABOUT 716,000 AS WELL, AGAIN, IN A RESTRICTED CARRYOVER.

THOSE ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE BUDGET, THOSE ARE SET ASIDE.

THEY CAN'T BE USED TO BALANCE THE BUDGET.

THE NEXT CATEGORY IS OUR ASSIGNED CATEGORY, AND THAT ASSIGNED CATEGORY IS TO SPECIFIC PROGRAMS THAT WE'VE DECIDED TO MAKE PRIORITIES AND SOME OF THAT HAS TO DO WITH SOME OF THE WORK THAT TAMRA AND HER TEAM ARE DOING, AS WELL AS OUR CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS AS WELL.

THERE ARE CERTAIN THAT ARE NOT PREPAID, BUT WE STILL NEED THE FUNDING TO SUPPORT THOSE ADOPTIONS.

AS WELL AS MONEY SET ASIDE FOR OUR '24-'25 BUDGET.

AS YOU KNOW THAT WHEN I PRESENTED THE BUDGET, WE HAD TO RELY ON SOME OF OUR FUND BALANCE TO BALANCE THE '24-'25 BUDGET.

THAT DID HAVE A SLIGHT INCREASE.

HOWEVER, WE DID USE ALL OF OUR UNASSIGNED MONEY.

THAT'S OUR RAINY DAY MONEY.

WE DID KNOW THAT THAT WAS SOMETHING WE HAD PLANNED TO DO IN THE '23-'24 SCHOOL YEAR, SO THOSE FUNDS ARE COMPLETELY DEPLETED AND THERE IS NO REMAINING FUNDS LEFT.

[01:15:02]

THE LAST CATEGORY IS THE UNASSIGNED FOR BOARD POLICY 6022.

IT'S A MINIMUM FUND BALANCE, AND THAT'S A SET AMOUNT THAT IS IN OUR POLICY.

THAT GREW 954,000.

IF YOU TAKE THE ASSIGNED AND THE UNASSIGNED FOR THE BOARD POLICY, THAT'S WHERE WE CAME UP WITH OUR FUND BALANCE WAS REDUCING BY 2.35 MILLION THOSE CHANGES FROM THE '22-'23 SCHOOL YEAR.

THAT WAS A LOT. DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT?

>> NO, PLEASE. I'M WAITING TO GET TO WHERE I FEEL LIKE THE BOTTOM LINE IS WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT OUR BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR.

I'M GOING TO BE ASKING A QUESTION ABOUT THAT AS I LISTEN CAREFULLY TO WHAT YOU'RE SAYING.

I DON'T THINK THIS IS THE APPROPRIATE TIME TO ASK THAT YET.

YOU'RE NOT FULLY DONE WITH YOUR PRESENTATION, RIGHT?

>> I JUST HAVE ONE MORE SLIDE ON THE GENERAL.

>> THE 4% THAT WE HAVE IN RESERVES.

WE STILL HAVE THAT IN RESERVES. YES/NO?

>> WE HAVE 5%.

>> IT'S 6% AT THE END OF THE '23-'24 SCHOOL YEAR.

THEN WE DO SHOW USING SOME OF THAT OF THE UNASSIGNED FOR BOARD POLICY IN THE '24-'25 SCHOOL YEAR.

>> IT'S $13 MILLION.

>> WHERE ARE YOU POINTING AT? THE RESERVE IS $13 MILLION.

>> IT WENT UP BECAUSE WE ARE ADHERING TO OUR POLICY AND IT'S A PERCENTAGE EXPENDITURE.

>> VERY GOOD.

>> THAT'S PART OF THE REASON IT GREW IS BECAUSE OUR EXPENDITURES ARE GROWING TOO.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I DIDN'T GET A CHANCE THAT I SHOULD HAVE I SPOKE TO IS THE BOARD POLICY 6022 IS NEEDED FOR THE CASH FLOW, COMPLEXITY OF FUNDING AND OTHER ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTIES.

A MINIMUM FUND BALANCE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE BECAUSE YOUR LEVY COLLECTIONS DO NOT COME IN ON A REGULAR STREAM.

>> EXACTLY. YEAH. I'M SORRY.

I WAS DISTRACTED A LITTLE BIT.

SOMETHING I MIGHT WANTED TO HEAR.

>> NO. WE WERE JUST COMMENTING ON THE SAME.

WE WERE CLARIFYING YOUR NUMBER.

>> I'M JUST WONDERING BOTTOM LINE. I'LL JUST GET TO IT.

THE INTENDANTS AND THESE NUMBERS, HOW DO THEY IMPACT OUR PROJECTED DEFICIT FOR OUR NEXT BUDGET, IF AT ALL, DO THEY?

>> YEAH. WE CAME IN REALLY CLOSE TO WHERE WE THOUGHT WE WOULD START THE '24-'25 SCHOOL YEAR.

WE'RE REALLY NOT THAT FAR OFF.

WE DID HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE THAN WHAT WE PLANNED TO HAVE WHEN WE DID THE BUDGET.

WE START BUDGETS WAY IN ADVANCE.

THERE ARE SOME INFORMATION WE MAY NOT HAVE THAT YOU'RE PROJECTING.

A BUDGET IS MANAGEMENT'S BEST ESTIMATE AT THE TIME.

BUT TO YOUR POINT, WE ARE STILL PROJECTING OUR BUDGET TO PLAY OUT THE WAY THAT WE HAVE PRESENTED.

>> THAT'S WHAT I GET.

THAT INCLUDES LIKE WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT INCREASED FTE OR WHATEVER, IT ALL ENDS UP IN THE WASH, NOT REALLY MAKING A BIG IMPACT AT THE END.

>> IT DEPENDS ON HOW WE HAVE INCREASED FTE FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR.

THAT WAS OVER BUDGET, BUT WE'VE ALSO HIRED AND WE'VE ALSO HAD SOME ADDITIONAL EXPENDITURES.

WE'LL HAVE TO JUST SEE HOW WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT THOSE EXTRA STUDENTS THAT HAVE COME IN.

>> I THINK IT'S INCUMBENT ON MICHELLE AS OUR CFO TO ALWAYS BE VERY CAREFUL AND PRUDENT.

SHE SPEAKS THAT WAY. BUT I WOULD SAY JUST FROM OUR STANDPOINT, WE ARE VERY PLEASED WITH WHERE WE ARE BECAUSE WE'RE COMING IN ABOVE WHAT WE THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO COME IN.

TERRY, YOUR POINTS ARE WELL MADE.

>> I DIDN'T WANT TO GET MY HOPES UP.

YOU'RE THINKING MAYBE IT'S GOING TO BE A LITTLE BETTER.

>> WE HAD LESS EXPENDITURES THAN WE THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO HAVE LAST YEAR, SO WE WERE ABLE TO SAVE TECHNICALLY A LITTLE MORE MONEY.

TO YOUR POINT, OUR ENROLLMENT HAS COME IN HIGHER THAN WE PROJECTED.

BUT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT THIS PRESENTATION THAT MICHELLE IS GIVING IS WRAPPING UP LAST YEAR'S BUDGET.

THIS IS NOT THIS YEAR'S BUDGET.

[01:20:02]

THIS IS WRAPPING UP LAST YEAR'S SO IT'S VERY HARD FOR US TO SAY THAT BETWEEN NOW AND NEXT OCTOBER, OCTOBER IS WHEN WE WRAP IT UP, TO THE NEXT TIME MICHELLE IS PRESENTING, WHERE WE'RE GOING TO BE BECAUSE WE STILL HAVE MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS GOING IN AND A LOT OF FACTORS CAN PLAY INTO THAT.

PASSAGE OF A LEVY WILL PLAY INTO THAT.

LEGISLATIVE FUNDING WILL PLAY INTO THAT.

NEXT YEAR'S ENROLLMENT WILL PLAY INTO THAT.

NEGOTIATIONS WITH OUR LABOR UNIONS WILL PLAY INTO THAT.

THERE'S A LOT OF UNKNOWN FACTORS, BUT YOU'RE RIGHT.

DO WE FEEL GOOD ABOUT WHERE WE THOUGHT WE WOULD BE TO WHERE WE ARE? YES. BUT I THINK THERE'S ALWAYS A SENSE OF CAUTION.

>> TO MICHELLE'S POINT, I THINK SHE MADE A REALLY GOOD ONE AND THAT THE OTHER THING THAT SHE GIVES US GRACE TO DO, SOMETIMES A LITTLE BIT GRUDGINGLY IS TO RESPOND THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

SHE KNOWS THAT IT IS A BUDGET PLAN, AND WE HAVE ADDED THINGS SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR THAT WERE CRITICAL TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF IN BUILDINGS.

SOME OF THOSE DECISIONS COME ABOUT BECAUSE OF THE THINGS THAT SHE SEES HERE AND THE UNDERSTANDING THAT WE KNOW, OH, WE ARE ABOVE BUDGET IN ENROLLMENT, SO THAT DOES BRING IN SOME ADDITIONAL.

WHAT IT DOES IS IT GIVES YOU SOME MARGIN OR SOME BREATHING ROOM THAT YOU DIDN'T THINK YOU HAD.

>> THAT'S WHAT I WAS FEELING.

>> YOU HAD GOOD INSTINCTS.

>> BUT HAD SHE NOT STARTED OUT CONSERVATIVE TO BEGIN WITH, WE WOULDN'T BE THERE.

>> SHE'S NEVER TOLD US NO.

>> SHE DOES A GOOD JOB.

>> IMPORTANT TO SHARE WITH THE BOARD, THOUGH, THAT THIS IS THE '23-'24 BUDGET AND THE BOARD VOTED TO REDUCE THE MINIMUM FUND BALANCE.

GOING OUT TO NEXT YEAR GOING INTO NEXT YEAR.

I JUST WANT TO POINT OUT BECAUSE THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME, AND I KNOW IT'S IMPORTANT TO YOU.

IF YOU NOTE ON THIS SHEET HERE FOR THE END OF '23-'24, OUR MINIMUM FUND BALANCE IS LESS THAN 16 DAYS OF CASH ON HAND, AND WE JUST REDUCED IT FOR THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL YEAR.

IF YOU GO BACK TO LAST MONTHS, THE NOVEMBER 25 MEETING AND LOOK AT THE TOTAL PAYROLL, THAT DOES NOT COVER IT AND WE REDUCED IT AS A BOARD.

BE VERY CAUTIOUS AND BE VERY SUPPORTIVE OF HER CAUTIOUS AND VERY CONSERVATIVE METHODS WITH THE BUDGET BECAUSE IT IS THE REASON BECAUSE WE HAVE MICHELLE IN PLACE BECAUSE SHE PUTS THOSE SAFEGUARDS AROUND US AND BECAUSE SHE GUIDES US SO WELL WITH HER EXPERTISE, WE ONLY MADE MINIMUM CUTS.

>> WELL, I CAN MAKE THIS STATEMENT WITH A LOT OF CERTAINTY.

WE ARE IN THE BEST FINANCIAL STANDING OF ANY DISTRICT IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON.

>> BUT STILL MADE CUTS.

>> YES.

>> IF WE AREN'T PRUDENT IN OUR WAYS, WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SAY THAT.

>> WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SAY THAT.

>> I JUST THINK IT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE'RE LOOKING AT A PAST YEAR.

>> THANK FOR HELPING ME TO UNDERSTAND.

>> ON THE NEXT SLIDE, I JUST WANTED TO DISCUSS SOME GENERAL FUND ACTUALS TO BUDGET BECAUSE WE DID HAVE SOME SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS IN SOME OF OUR EXPENDITURE ACCOUNTS, WHICH WE KNEW GOING INTO THE '24-'25 BUDGET, SO THAT REALLY HELPED US BECAUSE AT ONE POINT, WE REALLY HAD A REALLY STRONG FISCAL CLIP WHERE WE DID NOT HAVE AS GREAT OF CLIFF GOING INTO THE '24-'25 SCHOOL YEAR AS WE HAD THOUGHT A COUPLE YEARS AGO WHEN WE WERE PUTTING TOGETHER THE '23-'24 BUDGET.

WITH THOSE KNOWN, BUT THESE ARE ONE TIME EXPENDITURE SAVINGS, BUT IT HELPED US TO BALANCE THE '24-'25 BUDGET.

SOME OF THE MAIN ITEMS WHERE OUR EMPLOYEE BENEFITS WERE UNDER BUDGET, OUR CURRICULUM.

WE HAD A LARGE BUDGET OF CURRICULUM, BUT WE DON'T KNOW HOW IT'S GOING TO BE SPENT FOR TEXTBOOKS OR SUBSCRIPTIONS OR CONSUMABLE.

WE'RE JUST NEVER SURE WHERE THAT'S GOING TO LAND UNTIL WE GET TO WHERE THOSE ADOPTIONS ARE FINALIZED.

SOME OF THOSE FUNDS, AND AS I POINTED OUT, DID NOT GET SPENT, BUT THE FUNDS MAY HAVE BEEN SET ASIDE IN OUR ASSIGNED FUND BALANCE TO CONTINUE THOSE ADOPTIONS.

[01:25:01]

ALSO OUR NONSPENDABLE WENT UP AS WELL.

OUR CATEGORICAL PROGRAM EXPENDITURES, AGAIN, THEY MAY NOT HAVE ALL BEEN SPENT OUT, BUT THEY'RE RESTRICTED, AND OUR PURCHASE SERVICES WERE OVER BUDGET, SUCH AS UTILITIES INSURANCE, SO WE DID COME IN OVER BUDGET IN THOSE BECAUSE WE JUST HAD NO CONTROL OF UTILITIES AND THE INSURANCE INCREASES THAT WERE HAPPENING.

>> MICHELLE, WOULD YOU SAY THAT INCREASE IS ALARMING, OR WOULD YOU SAY IT'S MINIMAL, MODERATE?

>> INSURANCE?

>> THE INSURANCE AND UTILITIES.

>> IT'S ALARMING. WE ARE ALREADY LOOKING AT POSSIBLY A HALF MILLION DOLLAR INCREASE IN INSURANCE FOR OUR '25-'26 SCHOOL YEAR.

IT'S OFF THE CHARTS.

OF COURSE, AS YOU KNOW, WITH THE FUNDING LEVEL, IF THE MSOC INCREASES ARE NOT COMING IN, WE'RE HAVING TO PULL MONEY FROM OTHER PROGRAMS TO FUND THAT INVOICE.

>> IN REVENUE, OUR SPED SAFETY NET AWARD AND SPED ENROLLMENT OVER BUDGET SO THAT GAVE US SOME EXTRA REVENUE AND THEN OUR INTEREST INCOME, THE FAIR MARKET VALUE OF THE INVESTMENT POOL, THEY THEY DID SOME GREAT THINGS AT THE COUNTY.

OUR MONEY IS INVESTED WITH THE COUNTY TREASURER, AND THEY DO A GREAT JOB OF THE INVESTMENTS AND OUR RETURN.

FINAL TAKE AWAYS, ENROLLMENTS CONTINUING TO GROW, MAINTAINING STUDENT PROGRAMS AND STAFFING IS A PRIORITY.

STUDENTS ARE STILL RECOVERING FROM PANDEMIC AND NEED EXTRA SUPPORTS, AND THE STATE FUNDING IS NOT KEEPING UP WITH THE ACTUAL COSTS.

THEN OUR FOUR YEAR BUDGET PROJECTIONS REQUIRE STILL USE OF FUND BALANCE, POSSIBLE EXPENDITURE REJECTIONS UNLESS STATE FUNDING IS INCREASED AND REPLACEMENT LEVY IS RENEWED.

THOSE ARE JUST SOME FINAL TAKEAWAYS FOR THE GENERAL FUND.

MOVING ON TO OUR OTHER DISTRICT FUNDS.

WE HAVE THREE OTHER FUNDS THAT WE WORK WITH.

THOSE ARE THE CAPITAL PROJECTS FUND, OUR ASP FUND, AND OUR DEBT SERVICE FUND.

I'LL START WITH CAPITAL PROJECTS.

THOSE ARE PRIMARILY IMPACT FEES THAT WE RECEIVED IN '23, '24 AND.

THERE'S SOME INTEREST INCOME AS WELL.

OUR EXPENDITURES WERE PRIMARILY THE CAM SCHOOL PROJECT, PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM.

YOU'VE SEEN ALL THOSE EXPENDITURES AS YOU'VE APPROVED THEM COMING THROUGH.

OUR ASP FUND IS THROUGH FUNDRAISERS, FEES, AND IT SUPPORTS STUDENT CULTURAL, ATHLETIC, RECREATIONAL, SOCIAL ACTIVITIES, AND ALSO EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES LIKE TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS, SUPPLIES AND ACTIVITIES.

THEN WE HAD OUR FINAL FUND, WHICH IS OUR DEBT SERVICE FUND, AND WE MADE OUR FINAL PAYMENT IN DECEMBER OF 2023 FOR OUR VOTED BOND AND OUR FINAL NON-VOTED BOND PAYS OFF THIS MONTH.

IT JUST GOT PAID OFF. WE HAVE NO MORE NO MORE BOND PAYMENTS.

THIS INFORMATION IS POSTED ON THE BOARD DOCS AND SO THERE IS A LOTS OF INFORMATION ON BUDGET AND FINANCE ON THE WEBSITE, AND I PUT AWAY THE PATHWAY TO GET TO THAT ON THIS SLIDE AND MY CONTACT INFORMATION, IF ANYBODY HAS ANY QUESTIONS.

>> THANK YOU.

THANK YOU. ANY OTHER COMMENTS FOR MICHELLE.

>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

THE BOARDS WE WILL MOVE ON TO CITIZENS COMMENTS.

[9. Citizens' Comments]

WE WELCOME YOUR COMMENTS.

COMMENTS INAPPROPRIATE FOR A FAMILY AUDIENCE CAN BE SUBMITTED IN WRITING.

BOARD MEMBERS DO NOT NORMALLY RESPOND TO QUESTIONS OR PETITIONS DURING CITIZENS COMMENTS.

THEY WILL LISTEN AND GIVE DIRECTION TO THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM IF ACTION IS DEEMED NECESSARY.

FIRST ON OUR LIST, TYLER LONG.

>> THANK YOU, BOARD FOR YOUR TIME.

I'M HERE TO CONTINUE THE COMMENTS THAT I HAD STARTED WITH YOU BACK ON 20TH OF OCTOBER REGARDING THE SEL CASTLE CURRICULUM.

I HAD DISCUSSED THE COMMENTS OR EXCUSE ME, THE DEFINITIONS AND THE GOALS THAT ARE STATED ON CASTLE'S SITE.

IN THE MEANTIME, I HAD E MAILED YOU A COPY OF THAT SO THAT YOU CAN REFERENCE THAT AND I HOPE THAT YOU READ IT.

AGAIN, THEY GOT FROM THEIR OWN WEBSITE SAYS THAT THEIR CURRICULUMS, EXIST TO FACILITATE CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF INDIVIDUAL AND CONTEXTUAL FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO INEQUITIES AND COLLABORATIVE SOLUTIONS THAT LEAD TO PERSONAL, COMMUNITY, AND SOCIETAL WELL BEING.

I HAD COVERED CRITICAL EXAMINATION, BEING CRITICAL THEORY.

I HAD COVERED CONTEXTUAL FACTORS, BEING IDENTITY GROUPS BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO'VE BROKEN THEIR LEG, CONTRIBUTING TO INEQUALITIES.

I ALSO TALKED ABOUT FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO INEQUITIES UNDER GIRDING IT.

THE PART THAT I DIDN'T GET TO BECAUSE OF TIME WAS THE COLLABORATIVE ASPECT, WHICH IS GROUP THINK BECAUSE THEY SAY THAT IT LEADS TO SOLUTIONS FOR PERSONAL COMMUNITY AND SOCIETAL WELL BEING.

THAT'S THEIR STATED GOAL, IS FOR WELL TRAINED GROUP THINKING INDIVIDUALS TO MARCH INTO THEIR COMMUNITIES AND BASED ON THE DIVISIVE CRITICAL THEORY THAT THEY'VE BEEN TRAINED IN.

IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, YOU CAN READ FURTHER DOWN ON THEIR WEBSITE IN THE DOCUMENTS THAT I HAD SENT TO YOU. THEY SAY GO.

THROUGH TRANSFORMATIVE SEL, STUDENTS AND ADULTS DEVELOP SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS NEEDED FOR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WITH A FOCUS ON THE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES THAT ARE CARING AND JUST.

OF COURSE, WHAT ARE THE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES THAT ARE CARRYING AND JUST? THE PREMISE OF WHAT'S CARRYING AND JUST IS BASED ON THE IDENTITY GROUPS THAT THEY SET ARE CONTEXTS FOR THE INEQUITIES THAT THESE INDIVIDUALS HAVE BEEN TRAINED TO SPOT.

AGAIN, YOU HAVE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN WHAT A FOCUS ON THE RIGHTS THAT ARE JUST AND WHAT'S THAT BASED ON? THE CONTEXT OF INEQUITIES.

THIS COULDN'T POSSIBLY BE MORE MAXIST IF THEY LABELED IT THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO FOR EDUCATION.

THIS IS CRITICAL THEORY.

THIS IS MAXISM.

THIS SHOULD SHOCK YOU.

BASED ON MY FURTHER RESEARCH SINCE TALKING TO YOU LAST TIME, I'VE COME ACROSS YOUR CALENDAR OF EVENTS.

I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE THE FIRST PILOT THAT'S GOING THROUGH JUST NOW AND THAT YOUR SECOND PILOT IS SCHEDULED TO COME IN FEBRUARY.

I THINK IT'S IMPERATIVE THAT THE COMMUNITY SEE THESE CURRICULUMS NOW.

HOW DO WE KNOW THAT OF THE 12 THAT WERE UP FOR CHOICE THAT WE CHOSE TWO BEST, HOW DO WE KNOW THAT THEY WEREN'T THE TWO WORST? I'D SAY EVEN THE BEST THAT MEETS THESE CURRICULUMS STATED BY CASTLE ARE DANGEROUS.

HOW DO WE KNOW THAT WE EVEN GOT THE BEST BASED ON THAT THOUGH? I THINK THAT THIS IS SECRETIVE, NEEDLESSLY SO.

I THINK THAT AT LEAST WE SHOULD RELEASE THESE PLANS BECAUSE I THINK IT'S BEEN DESIGNED IN A WAY THAT COMMUNITY COMMENTS WILL ONLY COME AT THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT WITH THE LEAST POSSIBLE INPUT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, TYLER. NEXT, EUNICE INGER MANSON.

>> GOOD EVENING, BOARD.

MY NAME IS EUNICE INGER MANSON AND I'M A COMMUNITY MEMBER AND A VOLUNTEER.

BIG THANKS TO TAMRA SCHEETZ, SO FOR THE REPORT TONIGHT.

AT THE LAST BOARD MEETING, I TOLD YOU ABOUT READING BOOKS WRITTEN BY HONG KONG, A KOREAN AUTHOR WHO WAS RECENTLY AWARDED THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE.

[01:35:06]

I FINISHED READING THE BOOK CALLED DO PARK THAT I MENTIONED AT THAT TIME.

THE STORY PAINTS DREAMY LANDSCAPES FILLED WITH MASS GRAVES AND PILES OF BONES.

I READ ABOUT THIS PERIOD A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A DIFFERENT BOOK, WHICH CLAIMED THAT THE AMERICAN TROOPS HAD A PRESENCE THERE AT THE TIME, BUT DID NOT INTERVENE TO STOP THE MASSACRES.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS BOOK WAS DEVASTATING.

THE MASSACRES BEGAN AT THE COMMAND FROM THE AMERICAN MILITARY, WHICH DIRECTED THE KOREANS TO PREVENT SOUTH KOREA FROM TURNING COMMUNISTS, EVEN IF IT MEANS KILLING ALL 300,000 RESIDENTS OF JEJU ISLAND.

IN THE WINTER OF 1949, 30,000 WERE MURDERED ON THE ISLAND BY A CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE.

THEN THE NEXT SUMMER IN 1950, WITH THE START OF THE KOREAN WAR IN MAINLAND KOREA.

200,000 SOUTH KOREAN CITIZENS WERE ROUNDED UP BY THE SOUTH KOREAN GOVERNMENT.

PEOPLE WITH THE SMALLEST SUSPICIONS OF SYMPATHY FOR THE COMMUNISTS FROM VARIOUS CITIES AND VILLAGES WERE TAKEN AND TRANSPORTED TO VARIOUS PLACES TO BE KILLED AND BURIED IN MASS GRAVES.

MCCARTHYISM WAS BAD ENOUGH IN AMERICA.

IT CREATED HELL IN KOREA.

I APPRECIATE LEARNING MORE ABOUT THIS DARK HISTORY OF THE TWO COUNTRIES THAT I LOVE BECAUSE ONLY THE TRUTH CAN BRING REAL HEALING AND RECONCILIATION.

KNOWING THE TRUTH SOMETIMES HURTS DEEPLY.

BUT ONLY IN THE LANDSCAPE OF TRUTH CAN HEALING, RESTORATION, AND REAL THRIVING HAPPEN.

I HOPE THAT YOU CONSIDER THIS IN CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION, LIBRARY BOOKS, AND ALL ASPECTS OF EDUCATION IN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU EUNICE. NEXT, JENNIFER HEINE WII.

>> GOOD EVENING BOARD.

I FIRST WANTED TO SAY THAT ON SATURDAY, I WENT TO THE YAKULT TREE LIGHTING AND HAD THE PLEASURE OF HEARING THE BAND FROM AMBOY MIDDLE SCHOOL.

THAT WAS NEAT. ALL THREE OF MY KIDS WERE IN BAND, AND TWO OF THEM WERE AT AMBOY.

I WAS NICE SEEING THE BAND THERE.

BUT TONIGHT, I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT OUR LIBRARY POLICY A YEAR AGO. IT'S BEEN A YEAR.

SINCE WE HAVE BEEN COMING AND TALKING ABOUT THE LIBRARY, AND WE ASKED FOR SOME CHANGES IN THE POLICY.

THE BOARD WANTED TO SEE CHANGES IN THE PROCEDURE FIRST.

WELL, THE DISTRICT HAS BEEN GRACIOUS ENOUGH AND MADE CHANGES TO THE PROCEDURE.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I WISH THAT THE DISTRICT WOULD DO AND I'VE MENTIONED IS TO ADD BOOK LOOKS INTO THE LIST OF RESOURCES.

IT'S ANOTHER SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR LIBRARIANS, BUT IT ALSO CAN BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH COMMON SENSE MEDIA AND CAN HELP LIBRARIANS UNDERSTAND WHY COMMON SENSE MEDIA PUT THE RATING ON A BOOK THAT THEY DID.

AT THIS TIME, I'M ASKING THAT THE BOARD CONSIDER CHANGES ACTUALLY TO THE POLICY AND TO AMEND IT.

MY SUGGESTION IS THAT TO INCLUDE UNDER THE SECTION THAT STATES, THE TEACHER LIBRARIANS DUTIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO INCLUDE THE LINE, ASSURE THAT CONTENT IS AGE APPROPRIATE AND IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE FEDERAL LAW FOR OBSCENE MATERIALS WHERE MINORS ARE CONCERNED.

THE FEDERAL LAW THAT STATES HARMFUL MATERIALS FOR MINORS INCLUDE ANY COMMUNICATION CONSISTING OF NUDITY, SEX, OR EXCRETION THAT ONE APPEALS TO THE PERI INTERESTS OF MINORS.

TWO IS PATENTLY OFFENSIVE TO PREVAILING STANDARDS IN THE ADULT COMMUNITY WITH RESPECT TO WHAT IS SUITABLE MATERIAL FOR MINORS.

THREE LACKS SERIOUS LITERARY, ARTISTIC, POLITICAL OR SCIENTIFIC VALUE FOR MINORS.

[01:40:04]

RASMUSSEN DID A REPORT AND THEY FOUND THAT 77% OF PARENTS ARE CONCERNED WITH THEIR CHILDREN BEING EXPOSED TO SEXUAL MATERIALS THAT ARE NOT AGE APPROPRIATE.

OF THOSE, 55%, WE'RE VERY CONCERNED.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I THINK IS REALLY IMPORTANT AND SOMETHING THAT THE BOARD SHOULD REALLY LOOK AT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, JENNIFER.

>> MARY EXCUSE ME. HOW DO WE GO ABOUT KEEPING TRACK OF SOMETHING PRESENTED TO US LIKE THAT.

SHOULD SHE SEND THAT IN TO US OR SOMETHING?

>> OFTEN PEOPLE DO SEND US AN EMAIL.

>> I'M UNABLE TO KEEP THE RECORD.

I COULDN'T KEEP ANYTHING ON IT, SO I DON'T KNOW.

>> YOU CAN ALSO GO BACK ON THE VIDEO. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

>> TAKE NOTES.

>> THANK YOU. THAT WOULD BE PREFERRED.

>> NEXT, WE HAVE OUR CONSENT AGENDA.

[10. Consent Agenda (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]

ON THE CONSENT AGENDA THIS EVENING, WE HAVE APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA, BUSINESS AND OPERATIONS, PERSONNEL REPORTS, STUDENT TRAVEL, FINANCIAL REPORTS, AND COMPLETED PROJECTS REQUEST FOR APPROVAL.

DO ANY OF THE DIRECTORS HAVE QUESTIONS OR SOMETHING WE NEED TO PULL OFF THE CONSENT AGENDA? IF NOT, I'D ENTERTAIN A MOTION.

>> I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.

>> STUDENT REPS, YOUR INPUT.

>> PRO.

>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS.

IF NOT, WE'LL TAKE A VOTE.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> OPPOSED. MOTION PASSES 5-0.

WE MOVE ON TO OLD BUSINESS, WHICH THERE IS NONE, AND THEN TO NEW BUSINESS. THERE IS NONE.

OUR FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS,

[13. Future Agenda Items and Board Events]

BEFORE OUR NEXT MEETING, WE HAVE TOMORROW'S KINDERGARTEN ACADEMY, WEDNESDAY'S, TK ACADEMY, AND THERE'S A CAC MEETING ON JANUARY 9TH.

OUR NEXT BOARD MEETING WILL BE JANUARY 13TH.

>> WE HAVE A STUDENT ADVISORY MEETING ON THURSDAY.

>> THANK YOU.

JANUARY 13TH WE WILL HAVE AN EXECUTIVE SESSION ON THAT MEETING AS WELL.

JUST PREPARING PEOPLE FOR IT.

>> WHAT IS THAT EXECUTIVE SESSION? IS THAT THE SUPERINTENDENT MID YEAR?

>> NO PRESSURE. [LAUGHTER]

>> YOU WANT TO TELL YOU IN ADVANCE?

>> I GET TO BE READY FOR IT.

>> AT THIS TIME,

[14. Executive Session]

WE WILL BE GOING INTO EXECUTIVE SESSION.

THE BOARD WILL BE ENTERING EXECUTIVE SESSION FOR DISCUSSION OF PERSONNEL PER RCW 42.30.1101G.

THERE WILL NOT BE ANY ACTION, AND WE WILL RETURN WOULD A FIVE MINUTE BREAK BE ENOUGH, WILL RETURN IT AT 8:20.

>> I THINK THAT'S IS REASONABLE.

>> THAT ENOUGH? WE WILL RETURN AT 8:20.

>> HEY, HAPPY HOLIDAYS. MARY.

>> HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

>> HAPPY HOLIDAYS MARY.

>> MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYBODY.
