WE'RE GOING TO GO OVER THREE MAIN SUBJECTS.

THE FIRST BEING THINGS THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING, AND THEN THE SECOND BEING THINGS WE HAVE IN THE WORKS, AND THE THIRD BEING JUST LIKE THE ENVIRONMENT AND LIFE AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

TO START, ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS WE HAVE BEEN FOCUSING A LOT OF OUR ENERGY ON WAS HOMECOMING.

IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST ATTENDED DANCES WE'VE HAD WITH 700 PEOPLE COMING THERE, AND IT INCORPORATED ALL CLASSES 9 THROUGH 12.

>> WE ALSO HAD A PEP ASSEMBLY ON FRIDAY INCLUDING HYPING UP OUR FOOTBALL TEAM AND CHEERLEADERS AND ALSO INCLUDING OUR UNIFIED SPORTS STUDENTS.

GAMES IN THE ASSEMBLIES INCLUDED STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT RELIGION, BELIEFS, AND BACKGROUNDS TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL ACTIVITIES.

WE GOT REALLY GOOD FEEDBACK FROM STAFF AND STUDENTS FOR THAT WHOLE ASSEMBLY.

>> THEN WE HAD OUR HOMECOMING SPIRIT WEEK, WHICH HAD PEOPLE INVOLVED A LOT MORE THAN WE USUALLY HAVE.

WE TRIED TO GET MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED THROUGH HAVING DIVERSE THEMES THAT INCORPORATED EVERY STUDENT, NOT JUST THE SELECT FEW.

>> THERE WAS ALSO A FOOD DRIVE WE DID FOR THE HUMANE SOCIETY, AND IT WAS A STUDENT-LED ANIMAL SHELTER FOOD DRIVE BASED OUT OF OUR AGRICULTURE CTE CLASS.

SOME OF THE THINGS WE HAVE IN THE WORKS FOR OUR SCHOOL IS ONE ARE FORMAL.

WE ACTUALLY HAVE THE BIGGEST FRESHMAN CLASS WITH 500 PLUS KIDS MAKING IT SO THE DANCE WILL BE HELD IN THE GYM FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.

>> AS WELL, WE'RE WORKING TOWARDS HAVING OUR SECOND MULTICULTURAL ASSEMBLY.

WE THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO REPRESENT THE DIVERSE COMMUNITY THAT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL HOLDS THROUGH THAT ASSEMBLY.

>> WE'RE ALSO HOSTING A FOOD DRIVE WITH NHS, NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY, AND THE CANNED FOOD DRIVE WILL GIVE BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY, AND WE ARE HOPING MORE STUDENTS INVOLVEMENT WILL HELP AND ADMIN IS GOING TO PROVIDE BREAKFAST FOR THE WINNING CLASS.

>> NOW, FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND LIFE AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS WE'VE BEEN DOING IS TRYING TO CREATE A CULTURE OF BELONGING ON CAMPUS.

WE'RE WORKING TO INCLUDE ALL STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT ABILITIES BY HAVING THEM HELP US WITH ASB ACTIVITIES AND BUILDING A MORE INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR EVERYONE.

EXAMPLES OF THIS HAVE BEEN SEEN THROUGH OUR CBC STUDENTS HELPING WITH THE COFFEE CART WHERE STUDENTS MAKE AND DELIVER BEVERAGES TO TEACHERS ON CAMPUS.

>> WE ALSO HAVE OUR BGHS THRIFT STORE, WHICH IS STUDENT-RUN, AND WE RECEIVED DONATIONS FROM THE COMMUNITY AND SELL ITEMS FOR A DOLLAR A PIECE TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO AN AFFORDABLE CLOTHING ITEMS FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED IT.

IT WAS ALSO ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE COLUMBIAN TODAY AND HAS BEEN FEATURED IN THE REFLECTOR.

OTHER SCHOOLS HAVE ALSO REACHED OUT FOR OUR HELP FOR OUR TEAM TO MAKE EFFORTS TO CREATE THEIR STORES IN DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES.

>> AS WELL, WE'VE MADE BECCA'S CLOSET, WHICH GIVES FORMAL WEAR THAT'S DONATED BY THE COMMUNITY BACK TO STUDENTS WHO NEED ACCESS FOR IT FOR DANCES.

THROUGH THE GROWTH AND STUDENT INVOLVEMENT, THOUGH, WE'VE SEEN THAT IT'S BECOME A MORE EXCITING PROCESS THAT LIMITS THE STIGMA BEHIND GOING TO THE SCHOOL FOR HELP WITH FUNDING, THINGS LIKE FORMAL WEAR AND STUFF LIKE THAT.

>> OUR WINTER SPORTS ARE JUST BEGINNING.

WE HAVE GIRLS AND BOYS WRESTLING, GIRLS AND BOYS BASKETBALL, SWIMMING, GYMNASTICS, UNIFIED BASKETBALL, AND CHEER.

>> ULTIMATELY, WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING THE GROWTH OF OUR COMMUNITY AND CREATING A SPACE WHERE EVERYONE IS REPRESENTED AND DISPLAYED THROUGH NOT ONLY ASB, BUT THROUGH EVERY ACTIVITY WE PROVIDE TO THE STUDENT BODY. THANK YOU.

WE GOT 450 SOCKS DONATED TO FOSTER KIDS IN THIS AREA.

NOW WE'RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON OUR THIRD ANNUAL WINTER CARNIVAL.

WE'VE HAD IT FOR THREE YEARS SO FAR, AND I'M THE CO-LEAD FOR THAT, SO YOU CAN ASK QUESTIONS.

[LAUGHTER] BUT IT'S ANOTHER PRAIRIE GIVES BACK EVENT, SO IT'S COMPLETELY FREE TO THE COMMUNITY.

ACTUALLY HAVE SOME POSTERS, IF YOU WANT THOSE.

ALSO, WE'LL HAVE IT COMPLETELY FREE.

BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT'S REALLY EXPENSIVE TO GO OUT GET GIFTS $40 AT THE MALL FOR SANTA PICTURES,

ALL OF OUR CLUBS HAVE AN INDIVIDUAL THING THAT THEY'RE DOING, LIKE MAKING SNOW FLAKES OR LIKE A DARK GAME, I THINK THERE IS, AND THEN LIKE HOT COCOA SANDS.

SOMETIMES THEY HAVE PANCAKES.

WE'RE TRYING TO GET THAT IN THE WORKS, BUT NOT FOR SURE JUST SO THAT KIDS CAN COME IN AND DO LITTLE ACTIVITIES AND HAVE FUN DAYS FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

NOW I'M GOING TO START SPEAKING ON THE PERFORMING ARTS.

PRAIRIES DRAMA PROGRAM JUST FINISHED THEIR MARY POPPINS PLAY.

IT SOLD OUT FIVE TIMES.

NOW THEY'RE WORKING ON THE PRODUCTION CALLED THE PROM, WHICH IS GOING TO BE IN THE SPRINGTIME, DON'T THE DATE.

BUT THE PRAIRIE BAND PROGRAM JUST ALSO FURNISHED THE PREP MUSIC FOR THE VARSITY FOOTBALL GAMES.

NOW THEY'RE MOVING ON TO BASKETBALL GAMES, WHICH IS ALSO GOING WITH OUR WINTER SPORTS.

THEY'RE ALSO DOING CHRISTMAS TUNES, MAYBE A FESTIVAL, AND THEY'RE PLANNING ON BAND-LIKE BONDING EVENTS, AND THEIR SKYVIEW JAZZ FESTIVAL, WHICH IS UPCOMING.

DON'T KNOW THE DATES, BUT THAT'S ALL.

>> THEN I'M SUPER EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THE FOOD DRIVE THAT WE'RE CURRENTLY HOSTING.

STARTING NOVEMBER 12, THE HOSA CABINET AND I DECIDED TO RUN OUR VERY FIRST INTER CLUB FOOD DRIVE COMPETITION IN WHICH EIGHT DIFFERENT CLUBS AT PRAIRIE ARE COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER IN A FRIENDLY COMPETITION TO SEE WHO CAN COLLECT THE MOST AMOUNT OF PRODUCTS.

THE REASON WHY WE WANTED TO RUN THIS DRIVE DIFFERENT FROM YOUR TYPICAL FOOD DRIVE IS TO FURTHER INCENTIVIZE AND ENCOURAGE THE STAFF, STUDENTS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS AT PRAIRIE TO DONATE AS MANY PRODUCTS AS POSSIBLE.

WITH THIS INHERENT COMPETITIVE NATURE TO THE DRIVE, WE HOPE TO COLLECT AS MANY PRODUCTS AS POSSIBLE.

ALL THE DONATIONS WILL BE GOING DIRECTLY TO THE CLARK COUNTY FOOD BANK FOR FURTHER DISTRIBUTION TO FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS IN NEED THAT ARE FACING ISSUES OF HUNGER AND FOOD INSECURITY, ESPECIALLY DURING THESE TIMES WHERE THE HOLIDAYS ARE APPROACHING, THANKSGIVING, AND CHRISTMAS CAN BE HIGHLY STRESSFUL TIMES FOR GROUPS THAT DON'T REALLY HAVE ADEQUATE ACCESS TO FOOD AT HOME.

THAT IS THE PRIMARY DRIVING FORCE OF THIS DRIVE.

WE REALLY WANT TO COLLECT AS MANY PRODUCTS AS POSSIBLE FOR THESE GROUPS.

WHAT'S REALLY COOL ABOUT THIS DRIVE IS THAT IT ALLOWS THE DIVERSE CLUBS AT PRAIRIE TO TRULY COLLABORATE AND WORK ALONGSIDE TOGETHER IN WAYS THAT THEY DON'T REALLY HAVE ACCESS TO BEFORE.

EACH CLUB IS ABLE TO COME TOGETHER TO WORK TOWARDS AN ENDEAVOR THAT IMPACTS THE BROADER COMMUNITY.

EACH CLUB HAS BEEN DOING A PHENOMENAL JOB OF DECORATING THEIR BOXES THAT REPRESENT WHAT CLUB THAT THEY'RE FROM, POSTING IT AROUND CAMPUS, MAKING FLYERS THAT ARE POSTED ON SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS AS WELL AS AROUND CAMPUS TO FURTHER SPREAD AWARENESS OF THE EVENT.

I'M SUPER EXCITED TO SEE WHERE THIS DRIVE TAKES US.

IT ENDS DECEMBER 20, AND THE WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT THE WINTER COLOR GUARD ASSEMBLY RIGHT BEFORE WINTER BREAK.

LITTLE GIFTS AND PRIZES TO STUDENTS AND BASICALLY HOW IT WORKS IS OTHER STUDENTS WILL ORDER IT FOR THEM.

I COULD GET ONE FROM MY LITTLE BROTHER, AND THEN ASB WOULD GO AND DELIVER IT TO MY LITTLE BROTHER AND WE SING A SONG AND IT IS AWESOME.

TEACHERS LOVE IT, TOO, SOMEHOW, AND WE WEAR EARS, AND IT'S GREAT.

THAT'S RUNNING FROM DECEMBER 2 TO DECEMBER 13, SO WE HAVE ANOTHER WEEK TO DO DELIVERIES BEFORE WE GO INTO WINTER BREAK, WHICH IS PRETTY AWESOME.

THEN WE'RE ALSO PLANNING OUR WINTER FORMAL, WHICH IS JANUARY 7 FROM 7:00-10:00 IN AND THE MAPLE GROVE LARGE GYM BECAUSE RIVER HOMELINK SHARES A GYM WITH MAPLE GROVE, BUT WE'RE ALL FRIENDS, SO IT'S GREAT.

THEN WE'RE ALSO TRYING TO LAND OUR PROM VENUE BECAUSE WE ALWAYS PROCRASTINATE IT, AND NOW WE'RE LIKE, OH, NO, IT'S ALMOST THE NEXT YEAR AND WE DON'T HAVE A PROM VENUE YET.

BUT IT'S OKAY. WE'RE WORKING ON IT.

THEN OUR PTO JUST HAD THEIR BEAUTY AND THE BEAST FATHER AND DAUGHTER BALL.

I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE WENT BECAUSE IT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY.

BUT I HEAR THAT I WENT REALLY WELL AND I SAW SOME PICTURES AND THEY WERE PRINCESSES, AND IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS SO WELL DONE.

I THINK IT WAS AT THE BATTLE GROUND COMMUNITY CENTER.

EVERYBODY FROM RIVER HOMELINK IS SAYING YES.

IT WAS THAT THE BATTLE GROUND COMMUNITY CENTER AND WENT SUPER WELL, AND IT WAS GREAT.

PTO IS VERY GOOD AT PUTTING ON THEIR EVENTS, AND THEY DECORATE REALLY WELL.

SINCE MOST OF THEM HAVE KIDS, THEY KNOW HOW TO CATER TO KIDS, AND THEY ALWAYS HAVE A GOOD TIME.

OUR RIVER HOMELINK THEATER IS PERFORMING SHREK AFTER THANKSGIVING BREAK, SO IT STARTS ON DECEMBER 6, AND THEN THEY HAVE 7:00 P.M SHOWINGS EVERY FRIDAY AND SATURDAY UNTIL THE 14TH..

THEY ALSO HAVE A MATINEE AT 7:00 ON SATURDAY THE 7 AND SATURDAY THE 14.

IT'S GOING TO BE AWESOME AND I'VE SEEN ALL OF THEIR COSTUMES, AND IT'S GOING TO BE INSANE. IT'S GOING TO BE SO FUN.

BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL IS DOING THEIR PERFORMANCE OF CLUE.

THE DATES ARE WEIRDER. I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT THE DATES ARE, BUT THEY'RE THE SAME TWO WEEKENDS.

THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON IS VOLUNTARY, BUT MOST SCHOOLS DEFINITELY WANT TO BE ACCREDITED.

MY ROLE IN THE ACCREDITATION IS TO ACT AS THE COACH FOR THE PRINCIPAL

AND STRUCTURE THE ENTIRE YEAR'S INVESTIGATION INTO THEIR OWN CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT.

ONE OF THE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT WORKING SPECIFICALLY WITH BATTLE GROUND SCHOOLS IS HOW WELL THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANNING PROCESS INTEGRATES WITH THE DISTRICT'S OVERALL STRATEGIC PLAN, WHICH HAPPENS TO JUST NICELY INTEGRATE WELL WITH THE RUBRIC FOR ACCREDITATION.

SOME OF THE THINGS WE COLLECT AND LOOK AT OVER THE COURSE OF THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR, A LOT OF DATA, A LOT OF STUDENT VOICE, A LOT OF COMMUNITY VOICE.

THEN THAT IS ALL PUT TOGETHER AND WE LOOK AT IT THROUGH THE LENS OF, IS THE PLAN RESEARCH INFORMED? IS IT COMMUNITY INFORMED? IS IT DATA DRIVEN? THEN THE FOURTH PILLAR IS REALLY, IS IT ORIENTED TO STUDENT WELLNESS AND SUCCESS? THAT'S ALL THE GREAT STUFF.

THAT'S ALL THE COLLECTING OF EVIDENCE AND PUTTING THAT INTO REPORTS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

BUT WHAT THIS ACCREDITATION IS REALLY ABOUT IS THE CULMINATING EVENT, WHICH TYPICALLY HAPPENS IN MAY, AND THAT'S WHERE I GET TO BRING A TEAM OF EXTERNAL ESD FOLKS AND SPEND THE WHOLE DAY AT PRAIRIE AND THE WHOLE DAY AT SUMMIT VIEW, AND LAST YEAR, THE WHOLE DAY AT RIVER BECAUSE I SAW MATT BACK THERE.

THEN I GET FAIRLY SIMPLE TASK IN THESE CASES OF WRITING THE RECOMMENDATION REPORT TO THE BOARD.

AT THAT POINT, SUZANNA AND KEVIN GET TO SHINE, AND IN MAY, THEY DID THEIR FINAL PRESENTATION IN FRONT OF A PANEL OF WASHINGTON STATE SUPERINTENDENTS AND SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS THAT ALSO REVIEW THEIR PLANS AND GET TO HEAR THEIR STORIES AND THEN MAKE A FINAL RECOMMENDATION FOR THEIR ACCREDITATION.

ONE BREAKOUT SESSION, WHICH IS LIKE A SMALLER WORKSHOP THAT YOU GO TO THROUGHOUT THE DAY THAT I WENT TO THAT REALLY STOOD OUT TO ME, WAS THE ONE ON CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION THAT I WENT TO DURING FRIDAY AFTERNOON, I THINK.

I DIDN'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE CTE PROGRAMS INVOLVED LIKE THE OTHER DISTRICTS DO, BUT ALSO THAT OUR DISTRICT DOES BECAUSE I KNOW ABOUT CASCADIA TECHNICAL ACADEMY, AND THEN MY SCHOOL DOESN'T REALLY HAVE A TON OF CAREER IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION JUST BECAUSE OF THE ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL.

WE HEARD FROM EVERETT SCHOOL DISTRICT WHERE THEY HAVE A GIANT CAREER IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM.

THEY WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH THEY LEANED INTO IT AND HOW THEIR GRADUATION RATES SKYROCKETED AND HOW IT'S NOT NECESSARILY FORCING THEM INTO A CAREER OR THINKING LIKE, OH, WELL, YOU CAN DO COLLEGE OR CAREER, IT'S COLLEGE AND CAREER.

I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY INTERESTING TO KNOW THAT DIFFERENCE WHERE YOU CAN BE EQUIPPED WITH TECHNICAL SKILLS AND YOU CAN LEARN THINGS THAT WILL HELP YOU IN THE FUTURE, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN COLLEGE ISN'T AN OPTION.

JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE DOING MORE OF AN OCCUPATIONAL GRADUATION PATH OR JUST YOUR CLASSES ARE MORE DEED IN THAT DIRECTION, IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU'RE NEVER GOING TO WORK YOUR WAY UP.

BUT ALSO INTO CASCADIA TECH AND ALL OF THE OTHER OPPORTUNITIES AROUND US BECAUSE IT'S NOT ONLY LIKE CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION ISN'T ONLY THAT CLASSES THAT WE OFFER, IT'S ALSO EVERYTHING AROUND US BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MANY LOCAL BUSINESSES AND WE HAVE CASCADIA TECH, WE HAVE CORK AND WE HAVE INTERNSHIPS THAT ARE OFFERED IN THE SUMMER FOR STUDENTS.

THAT WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS THAT I WAS LIKE, WHOA, THAT'S SO COOL THAT I TOOK AWAY FROM THE CONFERENCE.

>> IT WAS MY FIRST LOT OF THE CONFERENCE AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT WITH THE BREAKOUT SESSIONS OR THE BOOTCAMP CONFERENCE BECAUSE I WAS LIKE TWO HOURS FULL OF JUST TALKING, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO TALK ABOUT? WHAT AM I GOING TO LEARN? I THINK EVEN THOUGH THE BOOTCAMP CONFERENCE WAS LIKE FIVE HOURS TO ME BECAUSE I WAS LEARNING SO MUCH AND IT HAD SO MUCH IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT IT FLEW BY.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT I DID LEARN WAS LIKE THE ROLES OF THE SCHOOL BOARD COMPARED TO THE SUPERINTENDENTS AND THE BOARD'S RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN IT COMES TO MISSION, VISION, AND GOALS, FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT, SET POLICIES, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, AND A LOT OF THOSE THINGS.

SOME OF THOSE THINGS LIKE I DIDN'T KNOW BUT I DIDN'T REALLY KNOW THE TRUE UNDERSTANDING, SO THAT BOOTCAMP CONFERENCE REALLY GAVE ME A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING AS WELL AS WHAT AS A BOARD WE SHOULD BE DOING ALSO.

THEN I WENT TO A BREAKOUT SESSION, WHICH WAS CALLED POWER OF STUDENT PERSPECTIVE FOR EQUITABLE OUTCOMES.

I REALLY LIKED THAT BREAKOUT SESSION BECAUSE THE FIRST HALF OF THAT SESSION, IT WAS THE STUDENT REPS TALKING ABOUT THEMSELVES, TALKING ABOUT PROJECTS THAT THEY'RE WORKING AT THEIR SCHOOLS AND EVERYTHING.

IT JUST SHOWED ME THINGS THAT I LEARNED FROM THEM AS OTHER STUDENT REPS.

IT WAS JUST REALLY NICE TO SEE.

LIKE JULIA SAID, WE MET A LOT OF DIFFERENT STUDENT REPS AND LEARNED A LOT BECAUSE IT'S LIKE COMPARING OUR SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

ARLINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT DOESN'T HAVE AN SEL CENTER, AND THAT'S JUST SO SURPRISING TO ME BECAUSE IT'S SO IMPORTANT.

JUST LEARNING ABOUT WHAT THEIR TROUBLES ARE AND WHAT ACCOMPLISHING AND WHAT WE CAN LEARN AS STUDENT REPS OF WHAT WE CAN DO TO BETTER OUR DISTRICT AS WELL AS TO HELP OTHER STUDENTS AND ALSO HELP OTHER DISTRICTS WHEN IT COMES TO TALKING ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN DO TO HELP SOME ISSUES THAT MAYBE WE HAD IN THE PAST, AND THAT WE ACCOMPLISHED AND TO HELP THEM TO JUST BETTER ALL THE DISTRICTS BECAUSE THAT'S THE MAIN GOAL IS BETTERING THE EDUCATION SYSTEM AND BEING THERE FOR OUR STUDENTS.

THEN ONE THAT I WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO WAS THE PHONE POLICY ONE BECAUSE I KNOW THAT'S A REALLY BIG ISSUE AND I WAS LIKE, THAT'S THE ONE THAT I DEFINITELY NEED TO GO TO.

AS MUCH AS IT'S SUCH A BIG ISSUE, I FEEL LIKE WE AS A DISTRICT ARE DOING THE SAME THINGS THAT OTHER DISTRICTS ARE DOING.

OTHER DISTRICTS, THE PENINSULA DISTRICT WAS THE ONE THAT HOSTED THAT.

THEY'RE MORE DISCIPLINARY WHERE THEY'RE TAKING AWAY PHONES, BUT ALSO ONE OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS IS DOING THAT ALREADY.

IT'S JUST SEEING LIKE THAT WE'RE ALREADY DOING THE BEST WE CAN, IT'S JUST GOING FULL FORCE WITH IT INSTEAD OF HOLDING BACK AND IT SHOWED WHY A PHONE POLICY IS SO GOOD AND WHAT I CAN TELL MY OTHER FELLOW CLASSMATES OF WHAT'S THE REAL REASONING BEHIND IT, WHY IT'S THERE, AND HOW IT'S AFFECTED OTHER DISTRICTS IN A POSITIVE WAY AND HOW IT CAN AFFECT US IN A POSITIVE WAY AS WELL.

YEAH. THAT'S THE MAIN THINGS THAT I LEARNED AND I REMEMBERED BECAUSE THEY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION.

I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT WHAT SHE'S PROVIDED FOR US IS VERY IMPORTANT AND I FEEL LIKE ALL OF THE BOARD MEMBERS, IF THERE'S ANYTHING THAT WE CAN DO OF GREAT SIGNIFICANCE, IT MIGHT BE TO PERSUADE AND INFLUENCE WHAT HAPPENS IN OLYMPIA AND HOW IT IMPACTS WHAT HAPPENS HERE.

I SPENT QUITE A BIT OF TIME MEETING SOME PEOPLE AND GETTING TO KNOW THEM, AND I FOUND IT TO BE VERY BENEFICIAL AND I WAS GIVEN

BUT I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE MOST IMPRESSIVE THING ABOUT WAZDA FOR ME WAS HOW I HAD A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE, BUT THIS IS A BIG PLACE, I HAD A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE COME UP TO ME AND SAY, BATTLEGROUND, I MET YOUR SCHOOL REPS. THOSE TWO LADIES WERE REALLY IMPRESSIVE.

YOU GUYS DID A GREAT JOB, AND YOU REPRESENT US WELL.

BUT ANYWAY, THAT'S ALWAYS A HIGHLIGHT FOR ME.

THAT WAS A FULL DAY AND VERY INFORMATIVE.

THEN ONE OF THE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS, JEFF UTECT, I THINK HIS NAME IS.

HE HAD A FASCINATING TALK ABOUT WORKING WITH DIFFERENT GENERATIONS, AND HOW DIFFERENT GENERATIONS APPROACH WORK AND HOW DIFFERENT GENERATIONS APPROACH LEARNING.

IT WAS FASCINATING. I WANT TO DO SOME MORE RESEARCH ON THAT ONE.

[NOISE] I THINK IT COMES INTO PLAY IN OUR SCHOOLS, BUT ALSO WE AS BOARD MEMBERS, AND AS WE INTERACT WITH THE PUBLIC, AND OUR MESSAGING, OBVIOUSLY.

BUT THERE WAS ANOTHER SESSION THAT TIES IN WITH THAT, AND IT WAS ABOUT THE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE BOARD WORKING AS A TEAM.

THAT WAS DONE BY PASCO SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT DID THAT ONE, AND IT WAS VERY WELL DONE.

THEY'VE BOTH WORKED OVER 10 YEARS IN THE POSITION THAT THEY'RE IN.

THEY ARE OPENING TWO NEW HIGH SCHOOLS THIS NEXT YEAR.

FOR SEVERAL YEARS, THEY WERE OPENING A SCHOOL EVERY YEAR DURING THIS TIME THAT THEY WORKED TOGETHER, AND I THOUGHT IT'S FASCINATING THAT THEY CAN STILL SPEAK TO ONE ANOTHER AND HAVE A GOOD REPORT SO IT WAS A GOOD SESSION. THAT'S WHAT I TOOK.

I THINK I WAS BRAIN MUSH AFTER IT, IT WAS A LOT.

ALL YOU COULD EVER NOT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT TITLE IV AND TITLE IX, AND THERE'S SO MUCH MORE THAT THEY DIDN'T TELL US.

THOUGH, IT WAS GREAT TO GET THAT PERSPECTIVE.

I MIGHT BE FOOD FOCUSED, BUT IT DID TALK ABOUT FOOD AND SNACKS, SO TURNED OUT WELL.

BUT MAXIMIZING STUDENT VOICE IN OUR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES, HE HAD A WHEEL OF BELONGING, I THINK IT'S HAS A STICKER.

I REALLY GOT A LOT OUT OF THAT SESSION AND JUST REALLY REMINDED ME HOW IMPORTANT OUR STUDENT VOICE IS AND WAS VERY PROUD.

AS THEY TALKED ABOUT, DO THESE THINGS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR STUDENT VOICE? WE DO THESE THINGS AND IT WAS VERY REASSURING THAT WE'RE ON THE RIGHT PATH, AND THERE'S SO MUCH MORE WE CAN DO.

IT WAS LIKE A SCHOLARSHIP, THEY PAID ME TO COME.

I FOUND IT VERY INFORMATIVE AND VERY INTERESTING TO CONNECT WITH THESE PEOPLE.

IT WAS MORE RELATED TO FAMILY VALUES AND THAT STUFF.

AS A MATTER OF FACT, I SHOULD SAY, I SPOKE.

THEY WANTED TO HEAR A BOARD MEMBER SPEAK TO THE GROUP THAT HAD BEEN A TEACHER.

WE WERE CALLING THIS THE 45 DAY KINDERGARTEN PLAN.

ESSENTIALLY, WHAT WE WERE ATTEMPTING TO DO IS TO SUPPORT BOTH OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF WITHIN THE FIRST NINE WEEKS OF SCHOOL IS THAT WE KNOW THAT WE'VE SEEN AN UPTICK IN SOME OF THOSE FOUR, FIVE, AND 6-YEAR-OLD BEHAVIORS.

STARTING LAST SPRING, WE MET WITH ALL OF OUR KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS, PRESCHOOL TEACHERS, AND ITK STAFF IN PLANNING, TALKING TO THEM ABOUT WHAT WOULD SUPPORT LOOK LIKE AS WE STARTED THE FALL.

YOU'LL GET TO SEE WHAT SOME OF THOSE EFFORTS LOOK LIKE AND WHERE WE'VE HAD SUCCESS IN SOME OF OUR LESSONS LEARNED.

AS SHELLY SAID, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY THAT'S LISTENING TONIGHT UNDERSTANDS THAT THIS PRESENTATION IS IN NO WAY TO MINIMIZE SOME OF THE EXPERIENCES THAT OUR KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS ARE EXPERIENCING RIGHT NOW.

WE'VE HAD 350 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN JUMPSTART KINDERGARTEN, WHICH MEANS THAT APPROXIMATELY ONE THIRD OF THE 700 KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS THAT STARTED IN SCHOOL THIS YEAR HAD SOME EARLY INTERVENTION THAT WE'RE INCREDIBLY PROUD OF.

THOSE EARLY INTERVENTION EFFORTS ARE FOCUSED ON OUR MORE MARGINALIZED STUDENTS, MCKINNEY VENTO, AND I CAN'T READ THE SLIDE TO YOU.

I WON'T READ THE SLIDE TO YOU, BUT ESSENTIALLY IT'S THOSE STUDENTS THAT WERE OTHERWISE MAYBE NOT KINDERGARTEN READY AS WE STARTED TO BUILD THOSE RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILIES.

THERE WAS A RECOGNITION AS A PRESCHOOL PLC AS PART OF THEIR WORK THAT, HEY, WE WANT TO GET OUR KIDS AS READY AS POSSIBLE FOR KINDERGARTEN, AND SO WE WANT TO COME ALONGSIDE AND DO THAT WORK.

WE LOOKED AT THE CONTINUUM OF SERVICES, IF YOU WILL, WITHIN THE PRESCHOOL SETTING.

WE HAVE A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT PROGRAMS IN BATTLE GROUND, WHICH IS PRETTY AMAZING ON HOW WE SERVE OUR PRESCHOOL STUDENTS.

WE HAVE SPECIAL-EDUCATION-ONLY SETTING FOR STUDENTS WHO REQUIRE IT.

WE HAVE INCLUSIVE PRESCHOOLS AT BOTH OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, AND THEN WE HAVE A MIX AT ONE OF OUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS.

IT'S A REALLY UNIQUE WAY WE SERVE OUR STUDENTS TO GET THEM READY.

WITHIN THAT, THOUGH, THERE WAS A RECOGNITION OF, HEY, OUR PRESCHOOL STUDENTS GO TO SCHOOL FOUR HALF DAYS A WEEK AND THEN THEY TRANSITION TO TK AND KINDERGARTEN FULL DAYS.

THEY ENGAGE IN THIS PROCESS OF MAKING SURE THEY ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO HELP THAT TRANSITION GO AS SMOOTHLY AS POSSIBLE.

WE DID SOME WORK ALONGSIDE THEM TO START IDENTIFYING, WHO ARE THOSE STUDENTS WHO CAN JUST HAND OFF THE INFORMATION TO TO THAT KINDERGARTEN TEAM AND SAY, "HEY, THEY'RE GOING TO BE GREAT.

THEY NEED A COUPLE OF THINGS. THEY'RE GOOD TO GO." THEN IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT AS A TIER SUPPORT WAY, THAT TIER II AND TIER III, WHO ARE THE STUDENTS WHO MIGHT NEED A LITTLE BIT MORE WRAP-AROUND SERVICE? WHO DO WE NEED TO SIT DOWN AND TALK ABOUT MORE THOROUGHLY TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE SET UP FOR SUCCESS DAY 1? WE STARTED THAT PROCESS.

I WOULD SAY THAT'S AN AREA OF GROWTH IN THIS UPCOMING SPRING THAT OUR PRESCHOOL TEAM WANTS TO CONTINUE OF HOW DO WE CONTINUE TO ALIGN WHAT WE'RE DOING IN PRESCHOOL TO KINDERGARTEN? THEN THE OTHER PIECE, I'LL JUST SPEAK BRIEFLY TO, IS THIS IDEA OF COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATIONS.

AS WE EVALUATE OUR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS, HOW ARE YOU MAKING SURE THEIR REPORTS AND THEIR IEPS REFLECT WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE SO WE CAN START DAY 1 IN THE MOST SUPPORTIVE WAY? THEN THE LAST THING, WHICH IS REALLY NEAT IS THAT TS GOLD ASSESSMENT, IT'S THE SAME ASSESSMENT THAT WE'RE DOING IN KINDERGARTEN.

WE HAVE DATA POINTS THAT ARE GOING TO BE CONSISTENT FROM PRESCHOOL INTO KINDERGARTEN, WHICH IS GOING TO ALLOW US TO TRACK WHAT'S GOING ON ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO HELP THEM WITH SOME OF THEIR PROGRAMMING SUPPORTS. ANYTHING ELSE I MISSED ON THAT.

WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF THAT CORE INSTRUCTION WAS SOUND AS WE STARTED TO WORK WITH INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS.

THE OTHER THING THAT WE ENCOURAGED IS DURING THE PLC WINDOW 1, THAT WE TOOK A STEP BACK IN KINDERGARTEN FROM ACADEMICS, AND WE GAVE OUR TEACHERS PERMISSION TO FOCUS ON BEHAVIOR.

THE FIRST TIME, AND YOU'LL SEE IN THE UPCOMING SLIDES, THAT WE USED SOME OF THE WAKIDS TS GOLD DATA AND WE TRACKED THAT WEEKLY, AND THOSE PLC TEAMS WERE LOOKING CLOSELY AT THAT DATA, ADJUSTING TO THE DATA, AND ALLOWING OTHER ANCILLARY STAFF THEN TO STEP IN AND SUPPORT KIDS ACCORDINGLY.

ONE OF THE THINGS AND WE'LL TALK ABOUT THIS IN A LITTLE BIT IS, I THINK A NEXT STEP FOR US IS THERE WAS A LOT OF WILLINGNESS TO DO THAT IN OUR BUILDINGS, WHICH WAS AMAZING, BUT THEN IT'S HOW DO WE STRUCTURE THAT? WE TRY TO TARGET THEIR SUPPORTS IN THE KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOMS AT A MORE UNIVERSAL LEVEL.

WE'RE HOPING THAT CAN CAPTURE SOME OF THE NEEDS EARLY ON SO WE CAN STEP IN TO HELP CREATE STUDENT PLANS EARLIER RATHER THAN LATER IN THEIR JOURNEY.

WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO EXPLORE WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN EXTEND SOME OF THOSE SUPPORT SERVICES IN CLASSROOMS BEYOND THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS.

YOU'RE COMING IN AND YOU DON'T KNOW ALL YOUR LEARNERS QUITE YET.

WE WANT TO PROVIDE CONTINUED SUPPORT TO CONNECT THAT PRESCHOOL, TK, AND KINDERGARTEN TEAMS EARLY AND MEANINGFUL.

WE WANT TO HELP EASE TRANSITIONS, SO THE WORK IN THE SPRING IS REALLY CRITICAL AND IMPORTANT.

WE WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE CHALLENGES THAT COME WITH COMING FROM A HALF-DAY PRESCHOOL TO A FULL-DAY SETTING IN ITSELF IS JUST HARD FOR OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS.

THE REALITY IS THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF OUR LEARNERS COMING INTO OUR KINDERGARTEN ROOMS. THEN LASTLY, WE WANT TO ENSURE ADDITIONAL STAFFING KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOMS HAVE CLEAR ROLES, PURPOSE, AND GUIDANCE, AGAIN, TO MAXIMIZING WHEN THEY'RE IN THOSE ROOMS. THOSE FIRST FEW WEEKS AS WE'RE TRYING TO FLOOD THOSE SPACES, MAKING SURE THAT'S DONE INTENTIONALLY, THINKING ABOUT WHAT IS SOME PD THAT WE CAN POTENTIALLY PROVIDE TO THOSE STAFF, CLEAR EXPECTATIONS, CLEAR TOOLS THAT THEY CAN USE WHEN THEY ENTER THOSE SPACES.

>> THEN LASTLY, HERE, WHAT WE'D REALLY LIKE TO DO IS INCREASE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE COLLABORATION WITH THOSE MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAMS. IT'S REALLY HARD TO FIND TIME WITHIN THE SCHOOL DAY TO DO THAT.

I THINK IT'LL BE IMPORTANT AS WE CONTINUE TO PUSH RESOURCES INTO THESE CLASSROOMS THAT THE KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS KNOW WHY AND THE PURPOSE FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS BEING THERE, MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE ALL ON THE SAME PAGE AND CONSISTENT IN HOW WE SERVE AND SUPPORT AND COMMUNICATE WITH OUR STUDENTS.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT CAME OUT OF OUR LAST PRIMARY PRINCIPAL PLC IS THE NEED FOR OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF TO HAVE SPECIFIC TRAINING ON WORKING WITH STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, STUDENTS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMA, AND HOW TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WITH SOME OF THE BEHAVIORAL DISABILITIES AND THINGS THAT THEY'RE STRUGGLING WITH.

WE HAVE TENTATIVE PLANS TO START SOME OF THAT WORK IN JANUARY, SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

THEN OBVIOUSLY, TO FURTHER DEVELOP OUR TIERED SUPPORT USING THE CURRICULUM THAT WE HAVE WITHIN OUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS, AND TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT STAFF AS THEY CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE STUDENTS THAT ARE EXHIBITING UNSAFE BEHAVIORS.

IT'S A REAL THING. JEN AND I ARE TRYING TO BE OUT ALONGSIDE TEACHERS AND STAFF AS MUCH AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE, SO THEY'RE NOT FEELING ALONE AND ISOLATED ANY OF THIS WORK.

WE ARE GOING TO WORK WITH THE KIDS THAT WE GET AND WE'RE GOING TO TRY AND GET THEM AS FAR AS WE CAN IN THE TIME THAT WE HAVE WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF RESOURCES AND THE MOST AMOUNT OF EFFORT AND ATTEMPT TO TRY MANY THINGS FOR THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF OUR KIDS.

THERE'S SO MUCH MINUTIA TO THAT THAT YOU DON'T REALIZE UNLESS YOU SEE IT PLAY OUT IN THE CLASSROOM AND OUR TEACHERS SEE IT EACH AND EVERY DAY. IT'S A CHALLENGE.

THEN SINCE IT'S THE SEASON OF GIVING AND GRATITUDE, I WANTED TO SHARE TWO BRIGHT SPOTS ON THAT THEME.

ONE IS A FOURTH GRADE CLASS AT CAM ACADEMY, THE TEACHER IS ANDIE NOYE, AND SHE HAD REACHED OUT TO A TEACHER IN GEORGIA WHOSE CLASS WAS AFFECTED BY HURRICANE HALENE.

THE TEACHER IN GEORGIA SAID THAT A LOT OF HER STUDENTS STILL DIDN'T HAVE POWER AND THEY COULDN'T EVEN PLAY OUTSIDE BECAUSE OF DOWN TREES, AND POWER LINES, AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

THEY WANTED TO HELP OUT.

THE STUDENTS AT CAM RALLIED TOGETHER AND COLLECTED DONATIONS OF THINGS LIKE BOARD GAMES, AND BOOKS, AND CRAFTS, AND BRACELETS, AND THEY SENT IT ALL TO GEORGIA.

WHAT YOU SEE HERE IS A PICTURE OF THE STUDENTS ON THE RECEIVING END ENJOYING THE MATERIALS THAT THE CAM ACADEMY STUDENTS SHARED WITH THEM. REALLY NICE.

SHE CONVINCED HER MANAGER TO DO JUST THAT AND SHE DONATED 500 ITEMS OF CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES TO THOSE TWO GROUPS, AND THEY WERE ABLE TO DISTRIBUTE THEM TO STUDENTS AND FAMILIES AS WELL.

IT BREAKS MY HEART TO SAY THAT I NO LONGER BELIEVE THAT IS THE CASE, AND IT IS NOT DUE TO EXTERNAL THREATS, BUT BECAUSE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING INSIDE THE WALLS OF OUR SCHOOLS.

PRIMARY STUDENTS CAN NOW WITNESS THEIR TEACHERS AND ADMIN GETTING PUNCHED,

SCRATCHED, HIT AT THE BASE OF THE HEAD.

STUDENTS SEE PEERS HITTING, CHOKING, BITING, SCRATCHING, JUMPING ON TABLES, SCREAMING, YELLING THE MOST HORRIFIC PROFANITY, DESTROYING THEIR CLASSROOMS AND THEIR OWN THINGS, AND THEY NO LONGER BAT AN EYE.

THEY ARE FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR CLASSROOMS, MID LESSON, SOMETIMES FOR OVER AN HOUR DUE TO THIS BEHAVIOR.

THIS IS NORMAL FOR THEM, AN EVERYDAY OCCURRENCE.

WE STRIVE FOR A TRAUMA-INFORMED APPROACH IN OUR SCHOOLS, BUT NOW THE TRAUMA IS COMING FROM INSIDE OUR CLASSROOMS. THEIR SAFE SPACE IS NO LONGER SAFE.

THE ADULT WHOSE JOB IT IS TO KEEP THEM SAFE ISN'T SAFE EITHER.

DUE TO THESE OFTEN DAILY OCCURRENCES, STUDENTS WHO ARE BEING SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCESS THEIR EDUCATION TO THE DEGREE THAT IS THEIR RIGHT.

DUE TO THE LACK OF SUPPORT, STUDENTS STRUGGLING WITH BEHAVIORS ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCESS EDUCATION EITHER.

I HAVE A STUDENT WHO DID NOT STEP FOOT IN ANY CLASSROOM, DID NOT RECEIVE ANY INSTRUCTION FOR TWO MONTHS.

THE REASON GIVEN WAS THAT THE RESOURCES TO HELP THE STUDENT BE SAFE AND ABLE TO LEARN WERE TIED UP WITH ANOTHER STUDENT.

TWO MONTHS.

TWO MONTHS, THIS STUDENT WAS FLOATING IN OUR SCHOOL WITH NO ACCESS TO ANY EDUCATION BECAUSE OF A LACK OF RESOURCES.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

THAT STUDENT HAS A RIGHT TO AN EDUCATION, YET THEY DID NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A CLASSROOM FOR 61% OF THEIR CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR.

I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY COMPLEX ISSUE AND THERE'S NO SIMPLE SOLUTION TO SOLVE ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS, BUT WE COULD START BY HAVING A BEHAVIOR SPECIALIST IN EVERY BUILDING TO SUPPORT STUDENTS, STAFF, AND PARENTS NAVIGATE THESE INTENSE BEHAVIORS.

THE STUDENTS IN OUR BUILDING ARE OUR SOCIETY'S FUTURE.

IF WE DON'T INTERVENE NOW, THE FUTURE OF OUR COMMUNITY AND COUNTRY WILL THINK THAT THIS BEHAVIOR IS NORMAL BECAUSE IT'S ALL THAT THEY WILL KNOW.

PLEASE CONSIDER THIS NEED IN YOUR LEVY CONVERSATIONS.

THE FINANCIAL COST OF HAVING A BEHAVIOR SPECIALIST IN EVERY BUILDING WILL BE INSIGNIFICANT COMPARED TO THE LONG-TERM COSTS OF THE IMPACT OF THESE BEHAVIORS.

LATELY, I'VE BEEN READING WORKS BY A KOREAN AUTHOR NAMED HAN KANG, WHO HAS BEEN AWARDED THE 2024 NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE.

RIGHT NOW, I'M READING HER NOVEL NAMED, WE DO NOT PART WHOSE SUBJECT IS THE 1948, '49 JEJU UPRISING.

I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN KOREA AND HAD A TEACHER IN SCHOOL WHO GREW UP IN THAT ISLAND, BUT I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THIS UPRISING IN WHICH THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO DIED IS ESTIMATED TO BE BETWEEN 30,000 AND 80,000, WHICH TRANSLATES TO 27% OF THE ENTIRE ISLAND POPULATION AT THE TIME.

THE REASON I AND SO MANY OTHERS KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT WAS BECAUSE THIS INFORMATION WAS HIGHLY CENSORED IN KOREA.

THE FIRST NOVEL ABOUT IT WAS PUBLISHED IN 1978,
