>> [BACKGROUND] GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYBODY.

[1. Call to Order]

WE ARE HERE FOR A SPECIAL WORK SESSION.

THIS IS OUR ANNUAL INTERVIEWS FOR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES IN ACCORDANCE WITH POLICY 1250, WHERE WE HAVE STUDENTS ON GOVERNING BOARDS.

THE BOARD WILL REVIEW FOUR TENTH GRADE STUDENTS, AND THE SELECTED STUDENT WILL START THEIR TERM ON JULY 1ST OF THIS YEAR AND THEN SERVE FOR TWO YEARS.

SO WE DO HAVE FOUR INTERVIEWS TODAY WITH STUDENTS, AS I MENTIONED, AND THEN ONCE THOSE INTERVIEWS ARE COMPLETED, THE BOARD WILL GO TO EXECUTIVE SESSION TO MAKE A DETERMINATION, AND THEN WE'LL RECONVENE BEFORE THE MEETING TO END THE MEETING.

SO WITH THAT, IF EVERYBODY IS READY.

[2. Discussion]

GOOD AFTERNOON ALL.

I BELIEVE OUR FIRST CANDIDATE IS HERE, AND SO WE CAN BRING HER OUT.

[BACKGROUND] DO WE HAVE A COPY OF THE QUESTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATE? YOU SHOULD HAVE ASKED THAT EARLIER.

>> I SHOULD HAVE.

>> [NOISE] WE DO NOT.

>> WE CAN PRINT THOSE OUT.

>> [INAUDIBLE].

>> WHEN LISA COMES BACK, CAN YOU EVER GET A COPY OF THE QUESTIONS THAT WE CAN PUT ON THE TABLE THERE.

>> [NOISE] I HAVE.

>> YOU HAVE THEM? [BACKGROUND].

>> SO IT'S A LITTLE ROUGH GETTING STARTED.

SO THANKS FOR BEING THE FIRST ONE.

EMMA. YES. GREAT. WE HAVE THE RIGHT STUDENT ATTACHED TO THE RIGHT TIME FRAME.

[LAUGHTER] THIS IS GOOD. GOOD START.

>> THIS IS [INAUDIBLE].

>> WE JUST WANT TO GET YOU A COPY OF THE QUESTIONS IN FRONT OF YOU SO THAT [OVERLAPPING] YOU CAN READ THEM AS WELL, OR, YOU WANT TO REFER BACK TO ONE TO MAKE SURE YOU'VE ANSWERED THE FULL THING.

>> THANK YOU.

>> EMMA, HOW THIS IS GOING TO WORK TODAY, ALMOST EACH OF US WILL ASK YOU A QUESTION AND THEN JUST SHARE YOUR ANSWERS WITH US.

WE WILL GO THROUGH ALL OF THE CANDIDATES TODAY.

THEN WE WILL MEET AS IN EXECUTIVE SESSION TO DISCUSS HOW THE INTERVIEWS WENT AND PICK A CANDIDATE AND YOU WILL KNOW BY THE END OF THE EVENING ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

>> THANK YOU.

>> WE WILL GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED. ARE YOU READY?

>> YES.

>> I HAVE THE FIRST QUESTION. SO I JUST WOULD ASK THAT YOU TELL A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR INTEREST AND YOUR ACTIVITIES THAT MAY HAVE PREPARED YOU FOR THIS ROLE AND WHY YOU WANT TO BE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE.

>> WELL, I'M A MEXICAN. I'M A SOPHOMORE AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, AND I'VE BEEN LIVING IN BATTLE GROUND MY WHOLE LIFE, SO I'M VERY INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY, AND I'VE SEEN A LOT OF HOW THINGS GO AROUND HERE.

SOME THINGS THAT I LIKE TO DO.

JUST BAKING, PLAYING MUSIC, GOING ON HIKES, GOING OUTSIDE, PLAYING VIDEO GAMES, AND DOING SOME FUN ACTIVITIES, AND SOME THINGS THAT I'VE DONE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

I'VE DONE A LOT OF VOLUNTEER WORK.

I'VE WORKED AT BATTLE GROUND HEALTHCARE, WHICH IS A FREE CLINIC THAT'S IN BATTLE GROUND AND ALSO AT THE FAMILY PROMISE PROGRAM, WHICH PUTS IN TEMPORARY HOUSING FOR HOMELESS FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY.

A LOT OF DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES TO DO WITH HELPING OUT PEOPLE.

>> EMMA, WHAT MAKES YOU WANT TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION?

>> I THINK I HAVE A LOT OF INTEREST IN HELPING OUT OUR COMMUNITY, MAKING A LOT OF PEOPLE'S VOICES HEARD.

I THINK A LOT OF STUDENTS FEEL THEY'RE NOT PROPERLY.

THEIR NEEDS ARE BEING MET A LOT OF THE TIME.

JUST TRYING TO HELP PEOPLE FEEL MORE A PART OF DECISION MAKING IN THE SCHOOL BOARD FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY.

>> THANK YOU.

>> NEXT [INAUDIBLE].

>> HI. EMMA, NICE TO SEE YOU TONIGHT.

[00:05:04]

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE ROLE OF THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD?

>> TO THE BOARD, I THINK THAT THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE WOULD BRING THE ISSUES AND THINGS THAT THEY'VE SEEN HAPPENING IN THEIR SCHOOL TO THE BOARD AND PRESENTING IT FROM A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE.

THE BOARD MIGHT BE AWARE OF A LOT OF ISSUES GOING ON IN THE SCHOOL, BUT JUST SEEING THAT DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE FROM A STUDENT WOULD BE VERY VALUABLE IN HELPING WITH DECISION MAKING.

>> [NOISE] EMMA, HI. MY NAME IS TED.

NAME TWO OR THREE ISSUES THAT YOU THINK MIGHT COME UP IN A BOARD MEETING THAT YOU COULD WEIGH IN ON AND PICK ONE TO TALK ABOUT THAT ISSUE AND TELL US HOW YOU MIGHT CONTRIBUTE TO THE DISCUSSION?

>> I THINK TWO MAJOR ISSUES THAT A LOT OF STUDENTS HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT AT OUR SCHOOL, AT LEAST, IS DRUG USE AND THEN DISCRIMINATION.

A LOT OF STUDENTS HAVE COMPLAINED THAT THEY CAN'T SAFELY GO TO THE BATHROOM ANYMORE BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE BUSY USING DRUGS IN THE BATHROOM.

KNOWING WHEN PEOPLE BRING THAT UP IS IMPORTANT THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE TALK ABOUT IT BEHIND PEOPLE'S BACKS, BUT NOT DIRECTLY TO A TEACHER TO SAY, I JUST SAW SOMEONE VAPING IN THE BATHROOM.

THAT'S NOT SOMETHING A LOT OF PEOPLE BRING UP A LOT.

JUST FOCUSING MORE ON THE DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION.

A LOT OF STUDENTS, I FEEL DON'T THINK THE SCHOOL IS BEING MET THOSE NEEDS THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN EMPHASIZING IT, BUT INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS ACTIONS DO NOT REFLECT WHAT THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS IN MIND FOR THE REST OF THE COMMUNITY TO GIVE TO OUR SCHOOL THAT A LOT OF STUDENTS FEEL DISCRIMINATED AGAINST OR NOT.

PROPERLY LISTENED TO BY PEOPLE.

JUST THE BACKGROUND NOISE THAT SOME STUDENTS ARE GIVING TO EACH OTHER, BUT NOT NECESSARILY TO AN ADULT IS SOMETHING THAT COULD BRING TO THE SCHOOL BOARD TO TALK ABOUT.

>> [NOISE] THANK YOU.

>> HI, EMMA. I'M MARY.

>> [INAUDIBLE]

>> THE BOARD HAS STRONGLY PROMOTED AND ENCOURAGED STUDENT VOICE THIS PAST YEAR.

HOW WOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE TO STUDENT VOICE AND HOW WOULD YOU ENABLE ALL STUDENTS WITHIN THE DISTRICT TO PARTICIPATE?

>> I FEEL I MYSELF I'M NOT THE MOST SOCIAL OF STUDENTS, BUT I CAN SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING AROUND AND BE AWARE OF WHAT EVERYONE HAS BEEN SAYING ABOUT THE SCHOOL.

JUST REACHING OUT TO SOME STUDENTS GETTING AROUND TO THE SCHOOL AND ASKING HOW STUDENTS FEEL THEY ARE BEING REPRESENTED IN THE SCHOOL, AND TRYING TO HELP WITH THAT.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY. [LAUGHTER] [OVERLAPPING]

>> THANK YOU.

>> HI, I'M JULIA. I'M THE JUNIOR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, SO I WILL BE HERE NEXT YEAR.

THIS IS QUESTION 5. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU RECEIVED A COMPLAINT FROM A FELLOW STUDENT, PARENT, OR COMMUNITY MEMBER CONSIDERING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT?

>> IF THERE WAS A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, I FEEL I COULD DEFINITELY SAVE IT FOR A CONVERSATION WITH THE REST OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, BUT ALSO JUST ASKING AROUND AND SEEING IF OTHER PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY FEEL A SIMILAR WAY ABOUT THIS.

BECAUSE OFTENTIMES WHEN ONE PERSON HAS A VIEWPOINT ON IT, A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES TO WEIGH IN ON IT, SO ASKING AROUND TO SEE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT IT AS WELL.

JUST TRYING TO LOOK INTO THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE THAT THEY HAVE WITH THE COMPLAINT.

IF IT'S A VERY LARGE SCOPE OF IT ALL THAT IT HAS, THEN IT MIGHT BE HELPFUL TO GO LOOK INTO JUST HOW AND WHY THE ISSUE IS BEING DEVELOPED AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO HELP THAT, AND THEN BRINGING IT UP TO SOME PEOPLE WHO HAVE SOME GREATER POWER TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

[00:10:08]

>> HI EMMA, I'M SORA, AND I HAVE A FEW YES OR NO QUESTIONS FOR YOU NOW.

WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND 6:00 PM, BOARD MEETINGS ON THE SECOND AND FOURTH MONDAYS OF THE MONTH?

>> YES. I BELIEVE SO.

>> WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND WORK SESSIONS THAT WE MAY BEGIN AT 4:00 OR 4:30 PM, ON THE FOURTH MONDAY, OF EACH MONTH?

>> DEPENDING, I DO HAVE TENNIS IN THE SPRINGTIME, BUT I COULD ALWAYS ASK TO GET OUT A LITTLE BIT EARLY AS WELL TO HELP OUT WITH THAT TOO.

>> SOUNDS GOOD. THEN WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO REVIEW THE DETAILED AGENDA CONTENTS AND BOARD DOCS IN PREPARATION FOR THE DISCUSSION AND ADVISORY VOTE?

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL BOARD TOURS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY?

>> YEAH.

>> THEN WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE THREE-DAY WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION, ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN NOVEMBER?

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU.

>> JUST TO ADD TO THAT, WE WORK WITH OUR STUDENTS TO BE VERY FLEXIBLE FOR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.

>> I APPRECIATE THAT.

>> IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT IT'S NOT TO MAKE OR BREAK DEAL.

>> PERFECT.

>> THEN I THINK THE LAST THING, DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS FOR US?

>> I DON'T BELIEVE SO. EVERYTHING IS PRETTY SET SO FAR.

>> THANK YOU. IT'S GREAT TO MEET YOU.

>> GOOD TO MEET ALL OF YOU.

>> EMMA, THANKS FOR COMING IN.

>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. [OVERLAPPING].

>> NOT THE EASIEST THING TO DO, TO [LAUGHTER] JUMP IN AND BE FIRST, BUT WE APPRECIATE IT.

WE'VE HEARD GREAT THINGS ABOUT YOU.

YOU'RE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FROM YOUR SCHOOL. THANK YOU AGAIN.

>> I APPRECIATE THAT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, AGAIN.

>> THANK YOU. HAVE A GOOD EVENING.

>> [INAUDIBLE] [OVERLAPPING] [BACKGROUND]

>> SORRY. TERRY, DO YOU HAVE THE PACKETS? THESE PACKETS?

>> I HAVE A COPY OF THE QUESTIONS ON HERE.

BUT I DON'T HAVE A BLUE PACKET.

>> IT'S RIGHT UNDERNEATH THE WHITE.

FOR THE NEXT ONE COULD YOU PICK UP THE LAST QUESTION, WHICH IS, WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR US?

>> SURE.

>> THANK YOU.

[BACKGROUND] [NOISE]

>> SHE'S HERE. ARE WE READY?

>> YES.

[00:15:37]

>> CAROLINE.

>> HI, CAROLINE. HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

>> I'M GOOD HOW ARE YOU?

>> GOOD.

>> I'LL JUST SHARE THAT WE'RE EACH GOING TO ASK YOU A FEW QUESTIONS AND THEN WE WILL GO TO EXECUTIVE SESSION AFTER ALL THE INTERVIEWS ARE DONE WITH THE CANDIDATES AND THEN YOU WILL KNOW AT THE END OF THE EVENING ONE WAY OR THE OTHER, WHICH WAY THIS PLAYED OUT.

>> I'M GOOD.

>> WE CALLED YOU UP A FEW MINUTES EARLY, LIKE 10 MINUTES EARLY.

ARE YOU PREPARED AND READY TO GO? WE WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU'RE SETTLED.

>> YEAH. I'M GOOD IF YOU WANT TO GET STARTED.

>> EVERYBODY ON THE BOARD READY?

>> SURE.

>> WELL, I'M GOING TO START WITH THE FIRST QUESTION. I'M JACKIE.

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR INTEREST IN ACTIVITIES THAT MAY HAVE PREPARED YOU FOR THIS ROLE AND WHY YOU WANT TO BE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE.

>> WELL, I'M CAROLINE LUCE.

I CONSIDER MYSELF INVOLVED IN A LOT OF ACTIVITIES.

I DO SPORTS LIKE VOLLEYBALL, AND I'M ALSO A PART OF BAND AS A DRUM MAJOR, WHICH IS A LEADER FOR ALL OF THE BANDS, AND I'M A SECTION LEADER FOR ALTO SAXOPHONES.

I ALSO DO PIANO ON THE SIDE.

I USED TO DO IT FOR A JAZZ BAND, BUT I JUST RAN OUT OF TIME A LITTLE BIT.

BUT I HOPE TO PICK THAT UP MORE DURING THE SUMMER.

I ALSO AM BIG INTO MEDICAL FIELD, AND SO I'M A PART OF POSER, AND I'M HOPING TO RUN FOR LEADERSHIP FOR THAT NEXT YEAR.

I PARTICIPATE IN BLOOD DRIVES FOR THAT, AND ALSO I GET TO GO TO STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCES.

I AM IN A 4H CLUB CALLED STITCH AND STIR, WHICH I DO INDOOR ACTIVITIES.

I DON'T HAVE ANIMALS.

I HAVE A HAMSTER, BUT I'M NOT SURE THAT ONE COUNTS.

SO I DO SEWING, FASHION CONSTRUCTION.

I DO A LOT OF BAKING.

I LOVE TO DO THAT IN MY FREE TIME ALL THE TIME, WHICH IS A PROBLEM WHICH INDUCES MORE SPORTS, I GUESS, WHICH IS ANOTHER DRIVING FACTOR FOR THAT.

I REALLY DO LOVE TO BAKE, THOUGH.

I ALSO DO SOME GARDENING, WHICH IS MY LABOR DAY WEEK OR NOW LABOUR DAY, MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND WAS FILLED WITH THAT.

AND I ALSO DO A LITTLE BIT OF ARTS AND CRAFTS AND PERFORMING ARTS.

>> YOU'RE BUSY.

>> VERY.

>> I LIKE BUSY AS LONG AS IT'S NOT BORED.

>> AND DO YOU REFER GOING OUT?

>> I DO.

>> WHAT INTERESTED YOU ABOUT POTENTIALLY BEING A STUDENT WRAP ON THE SCHOOL BOARD?

>> I CONSIDER MYSELF PASSIONATE ABOUT ALL SORTS OF SCHOOL TOPICS.

I LIKE TO STAY INVOLVED WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT OBVIOUSLY ACTIVITIES AT MY SCHOOL AND HELP OUT WHEN NEEDED.

I LIKE TO CONNECT WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE AT MY SCHOOL, SO I FEEL LIKE I COULD REPRESENT THEIR IDEAS.

I JUST THINK THIS IS A REALLY COOL OPPORTUNITY.

I'D LOVE TO SEE HOW THIS GOES.

>> THANK YOU.

>> HI, DEBBIE. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE ROLE OF A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD?

>> I LOVE TO OBVIOUSLY LEARN MORE ABOUT IT, SO I CAN'T SAY FOR SURE.

BUT FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD OR ASSUME IS THAT JUST LIKE IT SOUNDS, THEY'RE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, SO THEY'RE ABLE TO PROVIDE INPUT ON BEHALF OF ALL STUDENTS AT BATTER GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, AT LEAST IN MY EXAMPLE.

AND THEY CAN SPEAK ON ISSUES AND THAT AFFECTS STUDENTS AND JUST BASICALLY BE A COMMUNICATOR BETWEEN STUDENTS AT BATTLE GROUND AND THE SCHOOL BOARD.

>> THANK YOU.

>> NAME TWO OR THREE ISSUES THAT YOU THINK MIGHT COME UP IN A SCHOOL BOARD MEETING THAT YOU COULD WEIGH IN ON.

PICK ONE TO TALK ABOUT THAT ISSUE AND TELL US HOW YOU MIGHT CONTRIBUTE TO THE DISCUSSION.

>> OF THE TOP OF MY HEAD, I WOULD SAY FUNDING IS PROBABLY A BIG ISSUE YOU GUYS DEAL WITH A LOT.

SO CHOOSING WHERE THAT IS GOING MIGHT COME UP A LOT.

I THINK SCHOOL ACTIVITIES BECAUSE FOR EXAMPLE, I'M INVOLVED WITH THE BOYS VOLLEYBALL GROUP AND SO THAT IS A BIG THING THAT WE'VE HAD TO COMMUNICATE WITH SOME UPPER LEVEL PEOPLE FOR A WHILE AND I THINK THAT WOULD DEFINITELY COME UP OR LIKE THE POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL, THAT WAS A BIG ISSUE THAT I TRIED TO BE A PARTICIPANT IN AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT. YOU SAID THREE, RIGHT?

[00:20:07]

>> TWO OR THREE.

>> TWO OR THREE. FINE. A THIRD ONE THAT MIGHT COME UP WOULD BE [NOISE] JUST LIKE WAYS TO MAKE OUR SCHOOL BETTER AND THINGS THAT COULD BE ADAPTED IN ORDER TO FURTHER LEARNING OR SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT.

>> THANK YOU.

>> HI, CAROLINE. I'M MARY.

>> NICE TO MEET YOU.

>> THE BOARD HAS STRONGLY PROMOTED AND ENCOURAGED STUDENT VOICE THIS PAST YEAR.

HOW WOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE TO STUDENT VOICE AND HOW WOULD YOU ENABLE ALL STUDENTS WITHIN THE DISTRICT TO PARTICIPATE?

>> WELL, I TOOK AN AP PSYCHOLOGY CLASS AND I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT DIFFERENT METHODS OF GAINING SOCIAL FEEDBACK AND SURVEYS IS OBVIOUSLY A REALLY EASY WAY TO GO IF YOU'RE TRYING TO GET A MASS POPULATION OF PEOPLE INTO ONE VOICE.

BUT ALSO, I THINK JUST TALKING WITH STUDENTS, WHICH I LIKE TO TALK WITH ALL MY PEERS ANYWAYS.

BUT IF I COULD BE MORE PROACTIVE ABOUT THAT OR ANY OTHER STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE INVOLVED IN A DIVERSE AMOUNT OF OPINIONS AND FEEDBACK SO THAT WE CAN GET A GOOD SAMPLE OF WHAT PEOPLE FEEL LIKE.

BESIDES MASS SENT SURVEYS, WE COULD JUST DO MAYBE OPEN DISCUSSIONS AND JUST BRING FEEDBACK EITHER BECAUSE SOMETIMES PEOPLE JUST DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE TALKING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE.

SO I GUESS SURVEYS IS THE MAIN IDEA OF MINE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> HI, I'M JULIA. I'M THE JUNIOR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE.

SO I'LL BE HERE NEXT YEAR.

MY QUESTION IS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU RECEIVED A COMPLAINT FROM A FELLOW STUDENT, PARENT OR A COMMUNITY MEMBER CONCERNING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT? I THINK I GUESS IT WOULD BE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES JOBS TO REPRESENT THAT IDEA IN A DISCUSSION FOR FURTHER ACTION TO BE INVOLVED.

I GUESS I WOULD RELAY THAT INFORMATION IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE FOR, I GUESS MOST FITTING WAY POSSIBLE IN ORDER FOR CHANGE TO HAPPEN IN THAT CIRCUMSTANCE.

>> THANKS, CAROLINE. NEXT, I HAVE A FEW YES OR NO QUESTIONS FOR YOU JUST TO ANSWER.

SO WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND 6:00 P.M.

AT BOARD MEETINGS ON THE SECOND AND FOURTH MONDAYS OF THE MONTH?

>> YES.

>> WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND WORK SESSIONS THAT MAY BE IN AT 4:00 OR 4:30 P.M. ON THE FOURTH MONDAY?

>> YES.

>> WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO REVIEW THE DETAILED AGENDA CONTENTS AND BOARD DOCS IN PREPARATION FOR THE DISCUSSION AND ADVISORY VOTE?

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU. AND THEN WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL BOARD TOURS DURING THE SCHOOL DAYS?

>> YES.

>> THEN WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE THREE DAY WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN NOVEMBER?

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, CAROLINE. SO LAST QUESTION.

WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR US?

>> IS THERE ANYTHING THAT I CAN DO FURTHER? I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I SHOULD ACTUALLY BRING.

I BROUGHT MY CONG BOOK IN CASE I NEED LIKE NOTES OR SOMETHING, BUT IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU NEED FROM ME AT THE MOMENT?

>> NO, WE HAVE YOUR LETTER OF INTEREST.

WE ALSO HAVE YOUR RESUME, WHICH WE APPRECIATED AND I'M PREPARING PRESS UP BY THE WAY.

>> THANK YOU. I TRIED TO FIND A GOOD FORMAT.

>> YEAH. YOU DID WELL.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I THINK WE HAVE EVERYTHING.

>> THANK YOU.

>> ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU HAVE FOR US?

>> NOT THAT I CAN THINK OF RIGHT NOW.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> YEAH. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.

>> OF COURSE. THANK YOU FOR INVITING ME.

>> YEAH, I APPRECIATE IT.

>> OF COURSE.

>> NICE TO MEET YOU.

>> NICE TO MEET YOU TOO.

>> NICE TO MEET YOU, CAROLINE.

>> CHRIS WILL TAKE CARE OF IT.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> WE'VE GOT TO READJUST THE TIMING.

[00:25:02]

ARE WE GOING TO BE USING THE SCORING ON THE BOTTOM OF EACH OF THESE ISSUES?

>> YES.

>> DO YOU NEED GUIDELINES ON HOW TO SCORE OTHER THAN WHAT I THINK?

>> IT'S VERY BIASED [LAUGHTER] VERY SUBJECTIVE AND RELATIVE.

>> I'M NOT GOING TO DO ANY OF THEM UNTIL THE END.

>> THANK YOU. THAT'S BEING BIASED.

>> I NEED A COMPARISON [OVERLAPPING] BECAUSE IT'LL BE FIVE.

[LAUGHTER]

>> MINE WILL JUST BE GOING DOWN BECAUSE IT'S MORE CRITICAL.

[BACKGROUND]

>> ANOTHER GENERAL QUESTION. I'M SORRY.

>> THAT'S FINE.

>> WE HAVE ONE PERSON WHO'S GOING TO BE WITH US NEXT YEAR.

YOU'RE GOING TO BE A SENIOR. THE PERSON THAT WE'RE BRINGING IN COULD BE A JUNIOR, CORRECT?

>> WE'LL BE A JUNIOR.

>> WILL BE A JUNIOR.

>> IT'S ONLY OPEN TO JUNIORS.

>> I SEE, WILL BE A JUNIOR.

>> ONLY OPEN TO SOPHOMORES WHO WILL BE JUNIORS.

>> OKAY. I SEE.

>> SO THAT THEY CAN ONLY SERVE FOR TWO YEARS.

>> YES.

>> FOR SOME REASON YOU DON'T HAVE ANY FRESHMEN SET THE RULES.

>> [INAUDIBLE]

>> ONE THAT WAS RETURNING AND ONE THAT WASN'T.

>> THAT WOULD BE THE REASON FOR TAKING TWO SENIORS BECAUSE YOU WANT SOMEBODY COME UP [INAUDIBLE].

>> COME ON. PICK UP THE PAGE [INAUDIBLE]

[00:31:15]

>> DO WE KNOW WHO THE NEXT STUDENT IS COME UP?

>> [INAUDIBLE]

>> DO WE KNOW WHAT TIME?

>> 4: 45.

>> THEY WERE TOLD TO BE HERE 10 MINUTES EARLY SO WE CAN EXPECT THAT SHE BE HERE IN THE NEXT FOUR OR FIVE MINUTES. [INAUDIBLE] COMING.

>> SHE'LL HAVE A NICE SURPRISE.

[00:38:10]

>> HI.

>> HOW ARE YOU.

>> GOOD. HOW ARE YOU? THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

>> WELCOME. HOUSE OF WORK IS WE'RE EACH GOING TO ASK YOU A FEW QUESTIONS.

THEN AFTER WE'VE SEEN ALL OF THE CANDIDATES, WE WILL RETIRE TO EXECUTIVE SESSION WHERE WE'LL MAKE A DECISION, AND BY THE END OF THE EVENING, YOU WILL KNOW ONE WAY OR THE OTHER HOW WENT.

>> THANK YOU. SOUNDS GOOD.

>> ONE QUESTIONS ARE IN FRONT OF YOU.

YOU CAN JUST SEE WHAT WE'RE ASKING AND WHAT YOU NEED TO ANSWER.

>> SOUNDS GOOD.

>> I'M JACKIE I'M GOING TO ASK THE FIRST QUESTION.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR INTEREST IN ACTIVITIES THAT MAY HAVE PREPARED YOU FOR THIS ROLE AND WHY YOU WANT TO BE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE.

>> WELL, I AM A SOPHOMORE BILINGUAL STUDENT.

[00:40:03]

I PLAY SPORTS.

I PLAYED HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER THIS YEAR AND LAST YEAR.

I DID TRACK THIS YEAR, AND I'LL BE TRYING OUT FOR WRESTLING NEXT YEAR.

I ALSO AM IN ASP LEADERSHIP.

I'VE BEEN AN ASP REPRESENTATIVE THIS YEAR AND LAST YEAR, AND I HAVE JUST RECENTLY GONE ACCEPTED INTO THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY.

>> CONGRATS.

>> ALL OF THOSE HAVE PREPARED ME FOR THIS ROLE SPECIFICALLY, HELPING ME LEARN ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND HOW TO USE MY ROLE AND MY VOICE AS A LEADER FOR MY FELLOW PEERS.

I'VE WANTED TO BE A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO BE A VOICE AND NOT JUST A VOICE FOR THE STUDENTS BUT FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD AS WELL.

I WANT TO HAVE EQUAL COMMUNICATION OF ALL PARTS FOR EVERYBODY.

I WANT EVERYBODY'S VOICE TO BE HEARD AND FOR EVERYBODY TO COMMUNICATE IN AN EVEN IN EQUAL AND RESPECTFUL MANNER.

I WANT TO HELP MY FELLOW PEERS AND MY FELLOW STUDENTS KNOW THAT THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES AND THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS WANTS THEM TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE AND GIVE THEM THE RESOURCES AND SHOW THAT WE ARE HERE FOR THEM AND WE WANT TO HELP THEM.

>> THANK YOU.

>> TAKE ALL THESE WRITTEN NOTES SO BEAR WITH US.

IT'S NECESSARY. [LAUGHTER]

>> HI, I'M DEBBIE. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE ROLE OF THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD?

>> WHAT I CONSIDER IS FOR SOMEBODY TO BE RESPECTFUL WHEN VOICING THEIR OPINION.

I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO COME INTO THIS ROOM OPEN MINDED TO HEAR EVERYBODY'S VOICE EQUALLY AND TO ALSO COMMUNICATE YOURSELF IN AN EQUAL RESPECTFUL MANNER.

I THINK AS A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, YOU'RE NOT JUST REPRESENTING YOURSELF, YOU'RE REPRESENTING YOUR SCHOOL AND YOU'RE REPRESENTING THE SCHOOLS AROUND YOU AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITY.

I THINK BEING A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE IS NOT JUST HELPING YOUR PEERS RIGHT NOW, BUT HELPING FUTURE STUDENTS AND HELPING THEM HAVE OPPORTUNITIES WHEN THEY ARE A FUTURE STUDENT AS WELL.

I DON'T THINK AS A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, IT'S ONLY JUST FOR THE STUDENTS, BUT IT'S TO GIVE THEM A VOICE AND TO GIVE THEM A VOICE FOR THE COMMUNITY BECAUSE WE ALSO WANT TO HEAR THE COMMUNITY AS WELL.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I'M TED. NAME TWO OR THREE ISSUES THAT YOU THINK MIGHT COME UP AT A BOARD MEETING THAT YOU COULD WEIGH IN ON.

PICK ONE TO TALK TO US ABOUT THAT ISSUE AND TELL US HOW YOU MIGHT CONTRIBUTE TO THE DISCUSSION.

>> TWO TO THREE ISSUES THAT MIGHT COME UP IN A SCHOOL BOARD COULD BE I WOULD LIKE TO SAY I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE TALK ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING FOR PROM TO HAVING THINGS BE ACCEPTED FOR SPIRIT WEEK.

I KNOW A LOT OF THAT COULD BE AN ISSUE, NOT REALLY UNDERSTANDING WHY WE'RE CHOOSING THAT CERTAIN THEME OR WHAT IT'S GOING TO DO TO HELP US.

ALSO ANOTHER ISSUE COULD BE TO GET CERTAIN APPROVAL FOR MONEY FOR CERTAIN EVENTS THAT WE MIGHT WANT TO DO DUE TO MAYBE NOT HAVING TOO MUCH OF CLEAR COMMUNICATION.

THE THIRD ONE WOULD PROBABLY BE THAT'S PRETTY HARD.

I WOULD WANT TO SAY HAVING DISAGREEMENTS WITH NOT JUST IN BETWEEN THE SCHOOL BOARD, BUT THE SCHOOL BOARD AND THE STUDENTS.

I KNOW THERE COULD BE A LOT OF ALTERCATIONS WHEN IT COMES TO THAT.

HOW I WOULD HELP AND FOR BASICALLY ALL OF THEM.

THE MAIN THING IS JUST HAVING CLEAR AND RESPECTFUL COMMUNICATION AND I WOULD HELP WITH THAT.

I THINK PATIENCE IS KEY AND HELPING STUDENTS VOICE THEIR OPINIONS IN A RESPECTFUL MANNER IS THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE.

I WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THIS DISCUSSION, HELPING WEIGH ON WHAT THE STUDENT WANTS TO GET ON AND WHAT THEY WANT TO ACHIEVE OUT OF THIS DISCUSSION AND NOT JUST THAT, BUT ALSO HELP THE SCHOOL BOARD VOICE THEIR OPINIONS THROUGH THE STUDENTS IN A WAY WHERE WE COULD ALL UNDERSTAND AND COME TO A MAJOR DECISION ON WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD DECISION, NOT JUST FOR THE STUDENTS BUT FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD AS WELL?

>> THANK YOU.

[00:45:08]

>> I'M MARY.

>> HI.

>> THE BOARD HAS STRONGLY PROMOTED AND ENCOURAGED STUDENT VOICE THIS PAST YEAR.

HOW WOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE TO STUDENT VOICE AND HOW WOULD YOU ENABLE ALL STUDENTS WITHIN THE DISTRICT TO PARTICIPATE?

>> I AM AN ASP AND IN ASP LEADERSHIP, WE ARE ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY, WHICH WE BRING AND WE ASK OUR PEERS WHAT THEY WOULD WANT FROM US OR WHAT THEY WANT THE SCHOOL TO BETTER ON, FOR EXAMPLE, THIS YEAR, WE HAD ONE OF OUR CLASSES BUILD NEW BENCHES FOR THE SCHOOL TO SIT ON BECAUSE I KNOW THAT WAS A MAJOR ISSUE WITH PEOPLE NOT HAVING SPACE TO SIT ON.

AS A GROUP, WE USED ASP MONEY AND WE BUILT NEW BENCHES AND A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN USING THEM.

I ALWAYS ASK MY PEERS WHAT THEY WANT, WHAT THEY WANT THIS YEAR, WHAT THEY WANT FOR THEIR FUTURE YEARS, AND HOW TO HELP THEM BE MORE SUCCESSFUL.

HOW I CAN HELP IS BRING THAT VOICE HERE IN A RESPECTFUL MANNER, AS I ALWAYS SAY, THE BEST WAY IS TO BE RESPECTFUL.

I ALWAYS HAVE WANTED TO GIVE EVERYBODY A VOICE.

I WANT EVERYBODY TO KNOW THAT THEY HAVE A VOICE, NO MATTER THEIR SOCIAL CLASS, NO MATTER WHAT SOCIETY HAS MADE THEM BELIEVE AND AS WELL AS THEIR ETHNICITY.

I AM TALKING ON FRIDAY IN THE MULTICULTURAL ASSEMBLY.

IN MY SPEECH, IT DOES NOT JUST TALK ABOUT MY CERTAIN ETHNICITY, BUT THE WHOLE ETHNICITIES AROUND ME.

AS WE ARE MAKING THE MULTICULTURAL ASSEMBLY.

I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE MIGHT JUST THINK IT'S ABOUT UNDERSTANDING EACH OTHER'S TRADITIONS, BUT IT'S ALSO TO GIVE ALL OF US A VOICE.

IT'S FOR EVERYBODY TO RESPECT EACH OTHER AND RESPECT HOW WE GREW UP.

AS A COMMUNITY, WE SHOULD ACCEPT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF EACH OTHER, NO MATTER HOW WE GREW UP, NO MATTER THE SOCIAL CLASS WE LIVE IN BECAUSE EVERY STUDENT'S FUTURE NEEDS TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND IT'S IMPORTANT AND EVERY STUDENT'S LIFE IS IMPORTANT.

>> THANK YOU.

>> HI, I'M JULIA. I'M THE JUNIORS REPRESENTATIVE.

I ACTUALLY MET YOU AT THE LAST MORNING MEETING.

MY QUESTION IS QUESTION FIVE.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU RECEIVED A COMPLAINT FROM A FELLOW STUDENT, PARENT OR COMMUNITY MEMBER CONCERNING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT?

>> I WOULD ASK THEM ABOUT THE COMPLAINT, OF COURSE.

I WOULD ASK THEM WHERE IT'S COMING FROM AND IF THEY HAVE HEARD FROM FELLOW PEERS IF THEY'VE HAD THE SAME COMPLAINT.

I WOULD ASK THEM WHAT THEY THINK WOULD BE A GOOD SOLUTION FOR THE COMPLAINT.

I WOULD ASK THEM IF THEY WOULD WANT ME TO VOICE IT AFTER THE NEXT BOARD MEETING. OF COURSE.

I WOULD ASK THEM HOW THEY WOULD WANT ME TO COME ABOUT IT.

I WOULD TRY TO TALK TO THEM AND COMMUNICATE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

I WOULD KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THEM AS WELL AND TALK TO THEM AND HOW THEY WANT TO FIX THIS AND IF THEY WANT TO BE THEIR OWN VOICE, NOT JUST ME BE THEIR VOICE AS WELL.

I WOULD COME INTO THE MEETING.

I WOULD COMMUNICATE WITH ALL OF YOU WITH THE COMPLAINT, AND I WOULD ASK YOU GUYS WHAT YOU THINK WOULD BE THE BEST DECISION FOR THE COMPLAINT, AS WELL AS ASKING HOW YOU WOULD TAKE THIS AS WELL AND COMMUNICATING WITH BOTH THE PERSON WHO IS TELLING ME THE COMPLAINT, AS WELL AS YOU GUYS WHO WOULD HELP MAKE A SOLUTION FOR THAT COMPLAINT.

>> SO I HAVE A FEW, YES OR NO QUESTIONS FOR YOU.

FIRST OF ALL, WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND 6:00 PM BOARD MEETINGS ON THE SECOND AND FOURTH MONDAYS OF THE MONTH?

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND WORK SESSIONS THAT MAY BEGIN AT 4:00 OR 4:30 PM ON THE FOURTH MONDAY?

>> YES.

>> WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO REVIEW THE DETAILED AGENDA CONTENTS IN BOARD DOCS IN PREPARATION FOR DISCUSSION AND ADVISORY VOTE?

>> YES.

>> WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL BOARD TOURS DURING THE DAY?

>> YES.

>> LAST, WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE THREE DAY WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN NOVEMBER?

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU.

>> IT'S VOLUNTARY.

LAST QUESTION FOR YOU, AND GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT.

DO YOU WANT TO ASK US ANY QUESTIONS? THAT'S YOUR QUESTION.

[00:50:01]

>> WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR DREAM STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE? WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING TO GET OUT OF HAVING A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE AT YOUR SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS?

>> GOOD QUESTION. THANK YOU. GREAT QUESTION.

>> ANYBODY WANT TO ANSWER THAT? JULIA, WHAT'S YOUR [OVERLAPPING]

>> WELL, I LOVE TO ANSWER THINGS.

BUT I DON'T KNOW THAT I REPRESENT EVERYBODY ELSE'S OPINION. I DON'T KNOW.

BUT I WOULD SAY, AND SIMPLY, WE REALLY WANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW YOU AND OTHER STUDENTS VIEW THINGS.

WHAT YOU THINK? THAT'S REALLY THE STRENGTH OF WHAT YOU BRING TO US.

>> I WOULD ALSO SAY, AS A REPRESENTATIVE, I FEEL LIKE THE BIGGEST THING THAT ALWAYS GETS SAID TO ME, LIKE THE MOST OFTEN COMMENT THAT I GET IS LIKE, AFTER I SPEAK OUT SOMETHING, ESPECIALLY, IF IT'S AN OPINION, THAT'S OPPOSING SOMETHING, AFTER THE BOARD MEETING, PEOPLE WILL BE LIKE, WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR OPINION.

LIKE ALL PEOPLE REALLY WANT THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT LIKE, IF THE PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD, THE PEOPLE OUT THERE, THEY CARE SO MUCH ABOUT NOT ONLY YOUR PERSONAL OPINION, BUT THEY WANT YOU TO BE LIKE, WE WANT A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS? EVEN IF IT'S NOT WHAT THE BOARD THINKS, WHICH SOMETIMES IT ACTUALLY IS, NOT WHAT THE BOARD THINKS.

WHAT THEY REALLY WANT IS, HONESTY FOR YOU TO BE LIKE, MAYBE PEOPLE AREN'T GOOD WITH THIS.

MAYBE THIS IS HOW STUDENT WOULD REACT IF THIS IS LIKE, BECAUSE MOST OF OUR DECISIONS ARE CONCERNING STUDENTS, UNLESS THEY'RE FINANCIAL BASICALLY.

FOR EXAMPLE, LIKE THE LEVY, WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT MAKING BUDGET CUTS, THEY WERE CONSIDERING, WHAT IMPACT STUDENTS THE LEAST? THAT'S WHERE SORO AND I CAME IN, AND WE COULD GIVE OUR OPINION.

PEOPLE, I APPRECIATE THAT SO MUCH.

I WOULD SAY THE DREAM STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE IS THE ONE WHO'S HONEST, AND THE ONE WHO'S WILLING TO BE LIKE, THIS IS ACTUALLY WHAT'S UP, AND I'M NOT GOING TO SAY SOMETHING THAT'LL PLEASE YOU TO MAKE YOU THINK, I DON'T WANT TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOUR DECISION, I WANT YOU TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION.

I THINK THAT'S THE DREAM STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, IN MY OPINION.

>> AWESOME.

>> VERY WELL. I THINK THE OTHER, I'LL JUST CHIME IN ONE LAST PIECE.

I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO PRESENT YOUR OPINIONS AND YOUR PERSPECTIVE, BECAUSE YOU LIVE THOSE EXPERIENCES, AND AS A STUDENT, OBVIOUSLY, THE ADULTS HERE DON'T.

IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT I THINK ANOTHER CRITICAL COMPONENT, AND I APPRECIATED OUR STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS IN THE PAST, IS THAT, I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU REACH OUT TO OTHER STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT AT A GREATER LEVEL AT A DISTRICT PERSPECTIVE.

THAT'S NOT ONLY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

LAST YEAR, SORO WAS ABLE TO GO DOWN AND VISIT ALL OF OUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS AND ALL OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND DO VISITS THERE, AND TALK TO THOSE STUDENTS AS WELL.

I THINK A KEY PART OF BEING A STUDENT REP IS REALIZING THAT YOU'RE NOT REPRESENTING YOURSELF.

YOU'RE NOT REPRESENTING PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.

YOU'RE REPRESENTING ALL OF THE STUDENTS IN THE DISTRICT.

>> THANK YOU FOR THE ANSWER QUESTION.

>> THANK YOU.

>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS?

>> NOT RIGHT NOW. THANK YOU.

>> I THINK THAT WRAPS IT UP.

>> THANKS EVERYONE.

>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH SEE AGAIN.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> HAVE A GOOD DAY.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

[OVERLAPPING]

[00:58:33]

>> WE'RE GOING TO WAIT JUST A MINUTE FOR ONE OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS TO RETURN.

>> WELCOME, AUBREY. IT'S GREAT TO HAVE YOU HERE.

I WILL JUST SHARE THAT YOU HAVE TO INTERVIEW QUESTIONS IN FRONT OF YOU IF YOU WANT TO REFERENCE THEM DURING THE PROCESS.

EACH OF US ARE GOING TO ASK YOU A FEW QUESTIONS.

YOU ARE FINAL CANDIDATE OF THE DAY, SO AFTER THAT, WE WILL GO TO EXECUTIVE SESSION AND MAKE A DECISION.

BEFORE THE END OF THE EVENING, YOU WILL KNOW ONE WAY OR THE OTHER HOW IT WENT.

>> AWESOME.

>> I'M JACKIE AND I'M GOING TO START WITH THE FIRST QUESTION.

I'M JUST GOING TO ASK YOU TO PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES THAT MAY HAVE PREPARED YOU FOR THIS ROLE AND WHY YOU WANT TO BE A STUDENT BOARD REPRESENTATIVE.

>> MY NAME IS AUBREY, AND I GO TO PRAIRIE.

MY MAIN ROLE THAT HAS REALLY PIQUED MY INTEREST AS FAR AS THE SCHOOL BOARD IS CONCERNED IS I'M INVOLVED IN PRAIRIE'S TIER 1 BOARD, WHERE I AM THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE THERE.

I'VE GOTTEN TO WORK WITH A LOT OF STAFF MEMBERS ON A LOT OF DIFFERENT ORGANIZED ACTIVITIES AND

[01:00:04]

IDEAS AS FAR AS WHAT ISSUES PRAIRIE HAS BEEN TRYING TO TACKLE THIS YEAR.

WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON OUR CELL PHONE AND TARDY POLICIES.

THOSE HAVE BEEN BIG ISSUES THAT HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP THROUGHOUT THE MONTHS AND I'VE CREATED STUDENT COMMITTEES WITH ASB AND WITH JOURNALISM THAT HAVE BEEN TRYING TO TACKLE DIFFERENT ISSUES AS FAR AS STUDENT PARTIES AND ATTENDANCE ISSUES, WHICH A LOT OF THESE ARE MORE DISTRICT CONCERNED ISSUES, WHICH ARE WHAT INTERESTED ME IN THIS POSITION WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD.

THAT HAS BEEN COOL.

I'M ALSO THE PRESIDENT OF OUR SCHOOL'S UNIFIED CLUB AND OUR UNIFIED SPORTS PROGRAM.

OUR UNIFIED CLUB STARTED THE YEAR THAT I CAME TO PRAIRIE.

IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING SEEING THAT GROW AS A CLUB WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.

I'VE GOTTEN TO LEAD A LOT OF EVENTS AS FAR AS INSPIRE WEEK THROUGH PRAIRIE AND VARIOUS ASSEMBLIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS GROUPS WITH UNIFIED AT PRAIRIE.

THAT HAS BEEN FANTASTIC AND I'VE GOTTEN TO DO THE YOUTH LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE THROUGH UNIFIED AND JUST A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH THAT.

VERY RECENTLY, I WAS ABLE TO BE ON THE DISTRICT PODCAST THROUGH UNIFIED AS A REPRESENTATIVE, SO IT'S REALLY OPENED A LOT OF DOORS FOR ME.

I FEEL LIKE BEING ON A SCHOOL BOARD IS JUST GOING TO BE ANOTHER EXTENSION OF THAT, ALL THESE OPPORTUNITIES THAT UNIFIED AND TIER 1 HAVE BROUGHT ME.

GETTING TO COORDINATE WITH ADMIN HAS BEEN FANTASTIC BECAUSE I'M ONLY A SOPHOMORE, BUT I'VE BEEN ABLE TO NETWORK A LOT IN THE FEW SHORT YEARS THAT I'VE HAD HERE SO FAR, SO THAT'S BEEN GREAT.

I'M ALSO ON THE VARSITY SPEECH [INAUDIBLE] TEAM AT PRAIRIE, AS WELL AS LEAD ALTO IN JAZZ 1 AT PRAIRIE AND WIND ENSEMBLE WITH THE ALTO AS WELL.

ALL OF THESE HAVE I FEEL LIKE PREPARED ME REALLY WELL BECAUSE I'VE GOTTEN TO NETWORK A LOT WITH ADMIN AND STAFF MEMBERS THROUGH VARIOUS LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES, WHICH HAS BEEN AWESOME.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I'M DEBBIE. MY QUESTION IS, WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE ROLE OF THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD.

>> I THINK THAT A LOT OF WHAT I HAVE BEEN EXPECTING OR HOPING OR THINKING ABOUT, I GUESS, ESPECIALLY OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS, IS JUST AN EXTENSION OF WHAT I'VE BEEN WORKING ON WITH OUR TIER 1 BOARD, WHICH A LOT OF THAT HAS BEEN COORDINATING ABOUT WHAT WE CAN DO TO HELP THE MAJORITY OF STUDENT POPULATIONS AS FAR AS PARTIES AND VARIOUS ISSUES WITH CELL PHONE POLICIES AS I MENTIONED BEFORE.

WE'VE MADE A LOT OF VIDEOS CONCERNING HOW WE CAN INCORPORATE A SCHOOL WIDE UNDERSTANDING ABOUT INCLUSION POLICIES ACROSS THE SCHOOL SO THAT STUDENTS CAN INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER RESPECTFULLY AND ALL THOSE SORTS OF THINGS.

I FEEL LIKE A LOT OF THOSE ISSUES AS FAR AS AT A SCHOOL LEVEL CAN ALSO BE APPLIED TO AT DISTRICT LEVEL.

I'M REALLY HOPING THAT SOME OF THOSE ISSUES THAT I FEEL LIKE NOT NECESSARILY HAVEN'T BEEN COMPLETELY SOLVED, BUT JUST ISSUES THAT I FEEL LIKE COULD BE SOLVED EVEN MORE EFFECTIVELY WOULD BE FANTASTIC TO ADDRESS AT A DISTRICT LEVEL.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I AM, TED. NAME TWO OR THREE ISSUES THAT YOU THINK MIGHT COME UP IN A BOARD MEETING THAT YOU COULD WEIGH IN ON.

PICK ONE TO TALK TO US ABOUT AND TELL US HOW YOU MIGHT CONTRIBUTE TO THAT DISCUSSION.

>> ONE OF THE BIGGEST ISSUES THAT HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP AND I FORGOT TO MENTION THIS BEFORE.

I'M ALSO THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE AT THE DISTRICT STUDENT ACTION COMMITTEE.

THIS HAS ALSO BEEN A THING AT A DISTRICT LEVEL, WHICH I FEEL LIKE IS A GOOD INTRODUCTION TO THE SCHOOL BOARD HERE.

BUT ONE OF THE MAIN ISSUES THAT WE'VE REALLY DISCUSSED OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS AND ALSO LAST YEAR IS CONNECTIONS BETWEEN STUDENT AND STAFF, WHICH I THINK I'VE GOTTEN JUST A TASTE OF THAT GETTING TO EXPERIENCE SO MANY POSITIVE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN FANTASTIC STAFF MEMBERS AT PRAIRIE.

I'VE ALSO HAD EXPERIENCES WHERE I DON'T FEEL AS CONNECTED TO STAFF, AND I HAVE SEEN PEERS AND CLASSMATES THAT STRUGGLE AS A RESULT OF A LACK OF CONNECTION IN THE CLASSROOM, WHICH IS SOMETHING THAT WE'VE WORKED ON WITH THE STUDENT DISTRICT ACTION COMMITTEE AND ALSO WITH TIER 1.

[01:05:01]

I FEEL LIKE THAT IS SOMETHING SO UNIVERSAL THAT IT CAN'T REALLY BE CONSTRICTED TO JUST A PRAIRIE LEVEL PROBLEM.

I FEEL LIKE IT'S ALSO SOMETHING THAT SHOULD MOST DEFINITELY BE ADDRESSED AT THE SCHOOL BOARD LEVEL, WHICH WE'VE TALKED ABOUT AT THE DISTRICT ACTION COMMITTEE IS COMING TO THE SCHOOL BOARD HERE AT A MEETING AND TALKING ABOUT THAT.

THAT'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT I WILL ALWAYS PRESS FOR AGAIN AND AGAIN.

I FEEL LIKE EVERY CONVERSATION THAT WE HAVE WITH TIER 1, IT ALWAYS CIRCLES BACK TO THAT AS WELL, JUST TALKING ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR STAFF TO HAVE CONNECTIONS WITH THEIR STUDENTS.

BECAUSE EVERY SUPPOSED ISSUE, PROBLEM, CONFLICT OR POINT THAT'S BROUGHT UP IN A CONVERSATION, ALMOST ALWAYS CAN BE SOLVED OR HELPED BY JUST GETTING TO CONNECT AT A RUDIMENTARY LEVEL WITH A STAFF MEMBER BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE THERE'S ALWAYS STUDENTS THAT ARE GOING TO NEED EXTRA SUPPORT AND RESOURCES FROM THE DISTRICT LEVEL, THE SCHOOL LEVEL, THE STATE LEVEL.

WHATEVER SUPPORT THAT MIGHT BE, I FEEL LIKE TEACHER'S ROLE SHOULD ALWAYS INCLUDE THE SUPPORT AND EMOTIONAL GUIDANCE THAT THEY CAN GIVE TO A STUDENT IN THEIR GIVEN CASE.

I FEEL LIKE THAT IS SOMETHING THAT HAVING THE DISTRICT FOCUS ON IS SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO BENEFIT A LOT OF STUDENTS IN A LOT OF WAYS ACROSS THE DISTRICT AND ALL OF THE SCHOOLS.

>> AUBREY, I'M MARY. THE BOARD HAS STRONGLY PROMOTED AND ENCOURAGED STUDENT VOICE THIS PAST YEAR.

HOW WOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE TO STUDENT VOICE AND HOW WOULD YOU ENABLE ALL STUDENTS WITHIN THE DISTRICT TO PARTICIPATE?

>> I THINK THAT THERE'S A LOT OF STUDENTS ACROSS THE DISTRICT THAT HAVE A LOT OF THINGS TO SAY ABOUT VARIOUS THINGS THAT GO ON ACROSS ALL THE SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT.

I HEAR THINGS EVERY DAY AND NEW PERSPECTIVES FROM STUDENTS ABOUT THE WAY THE TEACHERS DO THINGS, THE WAY THAT ASSEMBLIES, ACTIVITIES, EVENTS RUN, AND THEY JUST HAVE NOWHERE TO PUT THAT VOICE, I THINK, BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF DISCOURSE AND DIALOGUE THAT GOES ON AS A RESULT OF ALL THESE THINGS.

OFTENTIMES THROUGH TIER 1 OR THROUGH OTHER WAYS, WHEN WE TRY AND SEND OUT SURVEYS OR THINGS TO TRY AND GAIN STUDENT VOICE, SOMETIMES IT GETS LOST IN TRANSLATION BECAUSE STUDENTS JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO REACH OUT ABOUT THESE WONDERFUL IDEAS THAT THEY'RE HAVING.

THROUGH TIER 1, WE ONLY HAVE TWO STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES RIGHT NOW THAT ARE PERMANENT, INCLUDING ME, AND SO THERE'S NOT A LOT OF DIVERSITY AS FAR AS PERSPECTIVES FROM STUDENTS.

I FEEL LIKE JUST STUDENTS BEING ABLE TO KNOW HOW THE SCHOOL BOARD WORKS BECAUSE I'M SURE THAT A MAJORITY DON'T KNOW QUITE HOW THE SETUP WORKS AT ALL.

I THINK THAT'D BE REALLY BENEFICIAL BECAUSE I KNOW PERSONALLY MANY STUDENTS THAT HAVE GREAT IDEAS ABOUT HOW EVENTS, ACTIVITIES, AND SCHOOL WIDE, DISTRICT WIDE POLICIES THEIR IDEAS ABOUT THAT THAT HAVE NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY VOICE THEIR CONCERNS OR IDEAS BECAUSE THEY JUST HAVE NEVER BEEN ENABLED OR EMPOWERED TO DO SO.

THE ONLY REASON WHY THIS HAS PIQUED MY INTEREST IS BECAUSE I'VE BEEN GIVEN THE RESOURCES AND NETWORK THROUGH ADMIN AND STAFF TO LEARN SO MUCH ABOUT IT.

I THINK THAT GIVING OTHER STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO TOO IS GOING TO BE REALLY BENEFICIAL FOR FUTURE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> BECAUSE I DON'T SPEAK FOR ALL STUDENTS AND NO OTHER STUDENT WOULD.

>> THANK YOU.

>> HI, I'M JULIA. I'M THE JUNIOR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, SO I WOULD BE HERE NEXT YEAR.

MY QUESTION IS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU RECEIVED A COMPLAINT FROM A FELLOW STUDENT, PARENT, OR COMMUNITY MEMBER CONSIDERING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT?

>> I THINK THAT INPUT FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS IS RUDIMENTARY IN THE WAY THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD RUNS, AND THE SCHOOL BOARD WITHIN PRAIRIE, AS WELL AS THE DISTRICT.

ANY INPUT, EVEN IF IT'S NEGATIVE, I FEEL LIKE IT'S GOING TO BE VERY IMPORTANT AS FAR AS THE FUTURE OF THINGS THAT ARE DONE AND DECISIONS THAT ARE MADE.

I FEEL KEEPING TRACK OF THE INTEREST OF THE PEOPLE, AND CONCERNS THAT PEOPLE HAVE, I FEEL IT'S WORTH NOTING THAT ANYONE THAT IS INTERESTED IN MAKING A COMMENT, EVEN IF IT'S A NEGATIVE ONE, THAT'S DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT IS IMPORTANT TO THE SCHOOL BOARD, BECAUSE IF THEY'RE WILLING TO GO OUT THERE AND SPEAK THEIR VOICE AND THEIR TRUTH ABOUT SOMETHING THAT THEY'RE CONCERNED ABOUT,

[01:10:02]

THEN THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE SHOULD ALSO BE CONCERNED ABOUT, BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING OUT OF THEIR WAY TO SPEAK ON SOMETHING THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT.

>> HI, AUBREY. I HAVE SOME YES OR NO QUESTIONS FOR YOU.

FIRST OF ALL, WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND 6:00 PM BOARD MEETINGS, ON THE SECOND AND FOURTH MONDAYS OF THE MONTH?

>>YES.

>> WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND WORK SESSIONS THAT MAY BEGIN AT 4:00 OR 4:30 PM, ON THE FOURTH MONDAY?

>>YES.

>> WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO REVIEW THE DETAILED AGENDA CONTENTS IN BOARD DOCS IN PREPARATION FOR DISCUSSION AND ADVISORY VOTE?

>> YES.

>> WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL BOARD TOURS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY?

>> YEAH.

>> THEN FINALLY, WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE THREE-DAY WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN NOVEMBER?

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU.

>> AUBREY, I'M TERRY, LAST QUESTION.

SERIOUS QUESTION.

WE REALLY WOULD LIKE TO HEAR THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION, SO GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT.

DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS FOR US?

>> I THINK I DO A LITTLE BIT.

>> PLEASE.

>> I'M CURIOUS BECAUSE IF I'M SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF PRAIRIE, OR AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF PRAIRIE, OR JUST OF THE DISTRICT, IS A LOT OF THE DECISIONS AND VOICE THAT I HAVE, IS THAT SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF PRAIRIE, OR IS IT JUST AS A COMMUNITY MEMBER WHO IS AFFECTED BY THE DECISIONS AND THE PROTOCOL WITHIN THE DISTRICT? IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE.

>> IT DOES.

>> I WOULD SAY YOU'RE SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE STUDENTS IN THE DISTRICT.

NOW IF THOSE STUDENTS HAPPEN TO COME FROM PRAIRIE, YOU'RE SHARING WHAT YOU'VE HEARD FROM PRAIRIE, BUT YOU MIGHT BE SHARING SOMETHING FROM LAUREN, OR TUKES, OR ANY OF THE OTHER SCHOOLS ON THE DISTRICT.

>> COOL.

>> SO YES. DOES THAT HELP?

>> YEAH, IT DOES. THANK YOU.

>> AND WE WOULD LOOK FOR WAYS TO HELP YOU REACH OUT TO OTHER SCHOOLS, FORM A PARTNERSHIP WITH JULIA.

LIKE IN THE PAST, SARA HAS VISITED OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND OUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS, WORK BACK AND FORTH.

>> WE ALSO DID THAT THIS YEAR, DANNY.

>> WHAT?

>> WE DID THAT THIS YEAR TOO.

>> YOU DID THAT THIS YEAR, TOO? [LAUGHTER] SORRY.

OBVIOUSLY, JULIA ATTENDS RIVER HOME LINK, NOW, AND YOU ATTEND PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.

BUT THAT WOULDN'T MEAN THAT WE WOULD WANT FOR INSTANCE, CAM, OR BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, TO FEEL LEFT OUT.

SO YOU WOULD HAVE TO FIND WAYS TO RECEIVE THAT KIND OF INPUT.

>> COOL.

>> THOSE MIGHT BE ASKING THOSE QUESTIONS WHILE ON BOARD TUBERS AS WELL.

THERE'S LOTS OF INFORMAL WAYS TO DO THAT, BESIDES FORMAL WAYS THAT YOU MIGHT SET UP AS WELL.

>> COOL. THANK YOU.

>> ANOTHER QUESTION? ANYTHING ELSE?

>> NOT THAT I CAN THINK OF, I DON'T THINK.

>> THANK YOU.

>> SHOULD ANSWER ALL MY QUESTIONS. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

>> NICE SEEING YOU, AUBREY.

>> THANK YOU, MR. [INAUDIBLE]

>> THANK YOU, AUBREY.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I WILL ASK EVERYONE TO SCORE THEIR POCKETS.

THEN WE WILL BE GOING TO,

[3. Executive Session]

EXCUSE ME, EXECUTIVE SESSION.

IF I CAN CLICK THE RIGHT BUTTON, [NOISE] AND GET THROUGH IT WITHOUT DYING.

WE WILL BE ENTERING EXECUTIVE SESSION FOR THE DISCUSSION TO EVALUATE THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE CANDIDATE PER RCW42.30.1101H.

WE WILL BE IN FOR 30 MINUTES.

WE WILL RETURN 5: 45.

5:50, AND WE HAVE RETURNED FROM EXECUTIVE SESSION.

THERE WILL BE ACTION FROM THIS EXECUTIVE SESSION.

I WOULD LOOK TO HEAR A MOTION.

>> SORRY, JUST A SECOND [INAUDIBLE] I'M TRYING TO [INAUDIBLE]

>> NO WORRIES.

[01:15:15]

HERE. [BACKGROUND]

>> I MOVE THAT THE BOARD SELECT [INAUDIBLE] MONTEL, AS THE NEXT UPCOMING STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, AND AUBREY GEAR, AS THE ALTERNATIVE.

>> BOARD, WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR TO APPOINT OUR NEXT STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE.

I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE FOR HER ADVISORY VOTE.

>> PRO.

>> GREAT. THEN ANY QUESTIONS BEFORE WE TAKE A ROLL CALL VOTE? NOT A ROLE CALL VOTE, A VOTE. SOMETHING? A VOTE? SOMETHING? HEARING NONE.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.

>> AYE [OVERLAPPING].

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5-0, AND CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW STUDENT BOARD REPRESENTATIVE, [INAUDIBLE] WHO WILL START ON THE BOARD IN JULY.

[APPLAUSE] I DID MAKE THAT PHONE CALL, SHE WAS SO EXCITED.

[LAUGHTER] JUST FANTASTIC TO SHARE THAT NEWS.

WITH THAT, WE WILL END THE WORK SESSION AT 5:52. THANK YOU.
