YEAH. OH, MY GOSH, THAT WAS WONDERFUL.
THAT'S GREAT. THANK YOU, PARENTS, FOR BRINGING YOUR CHILDREN.
YEAH EVERYBODY I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.
THERE ARE PARTS OF MY JOB THAT I DON'T LIKE THAT IS, LIKE, THE FAVORITE PART OF MY JOB EVER.
[LAUGHTER] SO I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU ALL FOR SHARING WITH US.
NEXT UP WE HAVE RUTH AND ITZEL FROM PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.
DID I SAY YOUR NAME RIGHT? HELLO. HELLO.
WE DIDN'T PREPARE ANY DRAWINGS OR SONGS.
OH, IT'S A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW.
I'M GONNA WRITE THAT DOWN. NO DRAWINGS, NO THOUGHTS.
YEAH. SO YOU GUYS WANT TO HEAR WHAT WAS HAPPENING WITH PRAIRIE? SO RECENTLY WE DID A COLOR WARS ASSEMBLY, WHICH WAS SUPER COOL.
WE HAD A WHOLE SPEECH ABOUT INCLUSION AND IT WAS SUPER POWERFUL.
AND I HAD A LOT OF FUN DOING THAT.
AND I THINK WE'VE BEEN HAVING A REALLY FUN TIME.
SOME UPCOMING EVENTS THAT WE'RE HAVING IS PROM.
THAT MIGHT INCREASE THE PROBABILITY OF THE STUDENTS NOT BEING SAFE ONCE GOING HOME AFTER PROM.
AND THEN WE HAVE OPENED OUR ASB APPLICATIONS AGAIN, AND WE'RE DOING IT A BIT DIFFERENTLY.
SO WE GET TO KNOW THE STUDENT AND WHAT THEY WILL IMPLEMENT IN ASB.
NICE. YEAH, AND THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL HONESTLY.
SO YEAH, I KNOW WE ASB HAS BEEN WORKING ON A LOT AND A LOT OF THINGS HAVE BEEN COMING UP GOOD.
I KNOW A LOT OF THE KIDS ARE HAVING FUN AT THE DANCES.
THEY HAD A LOT OF FUN AT THE SPRING FLING.
THERE WASN'T A LOT OF STUDENTS DOING BAD THINGS AND EVERYTHING.
SO YEAH. QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD.
DO YOU GUYS KNOW HOW MANY DAYS THERE ARE TILL THE END OF SCHOOL?
[00:10:02]
ISN'T IT 20 DAYS FOR THE SENIORS? AND HONESTLY, I'M JUST TRYING TO GET THROUGH.WELL, IT SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF GOOD THINGS ARE GOING ON.
AND ALTHOUGH NO SONG AND NO PICTURES, YOU WERE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.
AND I APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE AND SHARING.
IT WAS REALLY HARD TO TOP THAT.
IT WAS REALLY HARD TO TOP THAT.
BUT NOW YOU KNOW WHERE THE BAR IS FOR WHEN YOU COME BACK.
YEAH, HONESTLY, WE'LL BRING PICTURES AND EVERYTHING I GOT.
AND DO WE HAVE LOUIE AND MILEY FROM BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL? THEY BROUGHT PICTURES.
MILEY LOUIS. HOW ARE YOU GUYS? GOOD. HOW ARE YOU? GOOD.
THANK YOU. THANKS FOR BEING HERE.
I'M A SOPHOMORE AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.
AND TO BEGIN, I WANTED TO SHARE ABOUT ONE OF OUR RECENT EVENTS.
OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS, WE'VE HELD OUR ANNUAL TRADITION OF WISH WEEK.
DURING THIS WEEK STUDENTS AND STAFF MAKE WISHES, BOTH BIG AND SMALL, TO POSSIBLY BE GRANTED.
STUDENT, STAFF AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS THEN CAME TOGETHER TO TRY TO MAKE THESE WISHES COME TRUE.
AND WE COLLECTED OVER 500 WISHES.
AND WE WERE ABLE TO GRANT OVER 200 OF THOSE WISHES AND SOME OF THE WISHES GRANTED.
ONE OF THE BRIGHTEST MOMENTS WAS THE FLASH DANCE PARTY HELD FOR MISS TOWNSEND, WHERE STAFF AND STUDENTS GATHERED TO JUST BRING A COUPLE MOMENTS OF CHEER AND SILLINESS TO HER ROOM. WISH WEEK HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR OVER FIVE YEARS AT BATTLE GROUND, WITH THE GOAL OF BUILDING COMMUNITY AND HOPE FOR OUR STUDENT BODY, AND IT'S A TRADITION THAT WE HOPE TO CARRY ON FOR A LOT OF LIKE, YEARS TO COME.
WE HEARD A LOT ABOUT IT, AND WE HEARD HOW ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL AND TOUCHING AND MEANINGFUL AND THAT THE IMPACT THAT IT HAD WAS INCREDIBLE.
SO KUDOS TO YOU AND KUDOS TO YOUR ADVISOR.
AND KUDOS TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT JUMPED IN TO PARTICIPATE.
IT WAS I HEARD SO MANY WONDERFUL THINGS THAT HE JUST BROUGHT A SMILE TO PEOPLE'S FACES.
IT'S JUST A REALLY SPECIAL THING THAT WE DO.
YEAH, WE ACTUALLY DO HAVE WE DO HAVE.
WE HAVE THE SPECIAL PRIVILEGE OF I'M THE DIRECTOR OF [INAUDIBLE] THIS YEAR.
MILEY IS OUR JUNIOR DIRECTOR THIS YEAR.
THE SENIOR WHO HAS THE HIGHEST OVERALL SCORE AT THE END OF THE NIGHT GETS THE TITLE OF BEST OF BG.
THIS YEAR, OUR JUDGES ARE MASON TREZISE, WHO IS OUR ATHLETIC TRAINER AT BG.
AMBER TRINIDAD, WHO WORKS IN AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL IN THE SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT.
DURING INTERMISSION, THE AUDIENCE DONATES MONEY TO THEIR FAVORITE CONTESTANT.
THIS YEAR, ALL OF THE PROCEEDS WILL GO TO ELLA AND HER FAMILY.
ELLA IS A THREE YEAR OLD FROM RICHFIELD.
AT SEVEN MONTHS OLD, HER FAMILY NOTICED SOME UNUSUAL EYE MOVEMENTS MOVEMENTS.
SHE WAS THEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN INOPERABLE SPINAL AND BRAIN OR INOPERABLE BRAIN TUMOR, WHICH THEN SPREAD THROUGH HER BRAIN AND SPINE. SHE WAS SENT TO SURGERY IMMEDIATELY TO HAVE A PORT INSERTED IN HER CHEST SO SHE COULD BEGIN CHEMOTHERAPY.
FOR THE NEXT 18 MONTHS, EVERY WEEK ELLA WAS AT THE HOSPITAL FOR CHEMOTHERAPY TREATMENT.
SINCE THE CHEMOTHERAPY, SHE HAS BEEN STABLE.
LATER, SHE HAS A SECOND SURGERY TO TAKE THE PORT OUT.
NOW, ELLA IS ABLE TO LIVE A BIT MORE OF A NORMAL LIFE WITHOUT BEING IMMUNOCOMPROMISED.
ELLA'S VISION HAS ALSO BEEN IMPACTED BY THE BRAIN TUMOR.
SO SHE HAS TO HAVE THESE SPECIAL LITTLE GLASSES TO HELP HER SEE.
IN ADDITION TO THE STRESS AND GRIEF OF ALL OF THIS, HER FAMILY HAS ALSO EXPERIENCED A HUGE BURDEN OF NUMEROUS MEDICAL BILLS FROM ELLA'S TREATMENT, SCANS, TESTING AND OTHER NEEDS.
SO, WE'RE EXCITED TO TRY TO HELP THEM AS MUCH AS WE CAN.
[00:15:03]
YEAH, FANTASTIC.OKAY. SORRY, I COULD NOT FIND WHERE THAT WAS.
TICKETS WILL BE $15, AND ALL OF THE MONEY WILL BE DIRECTLY GOING TO ELLA AND HER FAMILY.
AND WE WOULD LOVE TO INVITE ALL OF YOU TO ATTEND AND SUPPORT HER FAMILY.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE'LL MAKE SURE THAT WE SEND OUT A CALENDAR INVITE TO ALL OF THE BOARD.
SO, IT'LL BE ON PEOPLE'S MINDS.
AND IF THEY WANT TO ATTEND, THEY CAN.
DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? IF WE ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND, IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE A DONATION? YES. WE HAVE JUST SET UP A WORKING ON SETTING UP AN ONLINE DONATION THING.
IF YOU WANT ONE OF YOU COULD JUST LET US KNOW THAT WE CAN SHARE THE LINK.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR GOOD WORK, COUNCIL.
HOW'S THAT FOR THREE? STUDENT VOICE PRESENTATIONS THAT ARE.
PRETTY POWERFUL. PRETTY POWERFUL.
I DON'T SEE THAT WE MISSED ANYBODY IN THE AUDIENCE, BUT JUST IN CASE, I'LL MAKE THAT CALL.
ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO COME SPEAK.
I'VE GOT A LITTLE BIT OF A BLOCKED VIEW, SO I WANT TO MAKE SURE I DON'T MISS ANYBODY.
OKAY, SO THEN I WILL LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR ANY REPORTS THEY MAY HAVE.
YEAH, THEY COVERED IT PRETTY WELL, BUT I JUST HAVE A FEW THINGS I WANTED TO MENTION.
SO, IT'S CALLED TIGER TALK, AND THEY'VE ALREADY HIGHLIGHTED MY CHROMEBOOK IS CHARGING, SO DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS, BUT THEY ALREADY HIGHLIGHTED, I THINK, THE DRAMA CLUB AND YEAH, THEIR PODCASTS ARE REALLY COOL.
SO, IT'S WORTH A CHECK OUT, I THINK.
AND IT'S REALLY COOL HOW LIKE THE KIND OF JOURNALISM SIDE OF EXTRACURRICULARS ARE REALLY COMING BACK AT BATTLE GROUND, LIKE WITH THE NEWSPAPER AND THE NEW PODCAST.
SO, IT'S SOMETHING TO KIND OF FOLLOW AND SEE.
AND THAT'S REALLY COOL. IS THE PODCAST PART OF WHO THE VIDEO PRODUCTION TEAM IS DOING THAT WITH MR. FOSTER. SO, IT'S REALLY COOL.
AND BASEBALL IS HEADED TO STATE, SO THAT'S SUPER COOL.
THIS WEEKEND ON THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AT 7 P.M., THE DRAMA CLUB IS PERFORMING A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, SO THAT'S WORTH A CHECK OUT AT BATTLE GROUND IN THE LEAR.
AND THE HAZEL DELL PARADE IS THIS SATURDAY, SO THE BAND WILL BE PERFORMING THERE.
THAT'LL BE FUN. IT'LL BE A SUNNY, I THINK, JUST LIKE THIS WEEKEND.
AND THEN ON SATURDAY, FROM 8 A.M.
TO 3 P.M., THERE IS A PLANT SALE AT BATTLE GROUND.
SO, ALL THE PLANTS THAT THE STUDENTS ARE GROWING ARE GOING TO BE ON SALE.
IS HE BUSY? I KNOW, BUSY, BUSY, YEAH, IT'S AN EXCITING FEW WEEKS.
ALL MY AP TESTS ARE DONE, SO THANK GOODNESS I KNOW THE END OF THE YEAR.
I HAVE NOTHING TO DO AT SCHOOL NOW, SO THAT'LL BE SO AMAZING.
IS THAT LIKE SIX AP CLASSES YOU'RE TAKING FIVE AND THEY'RE ALL OVER.
I DIDN'T EVER TODAY I WAS BEING FACETIOUS.
WELL, SINCE THEN WE'VE HAD OUR DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS BOTH THREE AND FOUR.
IF YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL IS IN 3A, BATTLE GROUND AND 4A.
I MAY HAVE AN OPINION ABOUT BATTLE GROUND BEING FOUR-A, BUT THAT'S FOR A DIFFERENT DAY.
SENDING A LOT OF PEOPLE TO REGIONALS.
BATTLE GROUND WOULD BE SENDING MORE, BUT WE ARE STILL SENDING A COUPLE.
SO, SOLOMON FROM PERRY IS GOING FOR THE HUNDRED 200 LONG JUMP.
AND THEN ETHAN PEREIRA IS GOING FOR THE 200 404 BY ONE AND 4X4.
AND THEN EIGHT FROM PRAIRIE IS GOING FOR THE 800 AND 4X4.
AND THEN WILL WHO'S ACTUALLY FIRST IN THE STATE FOR SHOTPUT.
[00:20:03]
AND I THINK MAYBE I THINK HE'S THIRD IN DISCUS, HE'S GOING FOR SHOT AND DISCUS.AND THEN WYATT, WHO'S NOT VERY FAR BEHIND HIM, IS ALSO GOING FOR A SHOT AND DISCUS.
AND THEN VLAD FROM PRAIRIE IS GOING FOR POLE VAULT.
OH, THE OTHER ETHAN. OH, SORRY, GUYS, THERE ARE TWO.
ETHAN IS GOING FOR THE 3200, AND THEN TY IS GOING FOR LONG JUMP.
DAMON IS GOING FOR TRIPLE JUMP, AND THEN FOR BATTLE GROUND.
WE HAVE THREE GUYS GOING TO REGIONALS FOR INDIVIDUAL EVENTS.
AND THEN THAT'S ZACH FOR THE 800.
REMEMBER, HE'S TOP IN THE STATE FOR THAT.
LORD KING IS GOING FOR THE 3200.
AND SO, I THINK HE'S GOING FOR THE 32.
AND THEN CALVIN IS GOING FOR 110 HURDLES AND 300 HURDLES.
AND HE'S ALSO HOW DID THEY DO THE HOW DID THEY DECIDE WHO GOES.
SO IS THERE JUST A DISTRICT AND THEN IT GOES TO REGIONAL OR IS IT JUST DISTRICT STRAIGHT TO STATE.
IT'S DISTRICTS. AND THEN IT'S LIKE CENTRAL DISTRICTS, WHICH IS WHAT WE CALL REGIONALS.
SO, IT'S LIKE DISTRICT WOULD BE LIKE YOUR LEAGUE.
SO THAT WOULD BE GREATER SAINT HELENS LEAGUE.
SO, LIKE, THAT'S, AND LIKE THE TOP THREE WOULD QUALIFY TO GO ON TO TOP NINE IN THE DISTRICT.
GO TO DISTRICT'S TOP THREE GO TO REGIONALS AND THEN TOP SEVEN AT REGIONALS.
GO TO STATE RIGHT. SO, IT KIND OF SPECIFICALLY DISTRICTS WEEDS OUT A LOT OF PEOPLE.
HOW DID WAS IT ZACH, THAT YOU SAID THAT THE 800-METER RUNNER, HOW DID HE DO AT REGIONALS? THE REGIONALS ARE THIS WEEKEND? OH, BUT AT DISTRICTS HE EITHER GOT FIRST OR SECOND.
OKAY. SO, HE'S GOING STRAIGHT THERE AND THEN YEAH, MOST PEOPLE GOT FIRST, SECOND OR THIRD AND THEN EVERYBODY IS TAKING ALL OF THEIR RELAY TEAMS. SO, FOR BOYS THAT'S FOUR BY ONE AND 4X4.
AND THEN FOR GIRLS THAT'S FOUR BY ONE, FOUR BY TWO AND 4X4.
EXCEPT BATTLE GROUND GIRLS ARE NOT TAKING THEIR FOUR BY TWO TEAM.
SO, WE'RE TAKING JUST OUR DISTRICT IS TAKING LIKE WHAT, SEVEN RELAY TEAMS TO REGIONALS? IT'S KIND OF A BIG DEAL.
I HAVEN'T EVEN DONE THE GIRLS YET.
AND THEN LUCILLE IS GOING FOR DISCUS, AND THEN THEY'RE TAKING THE RELAY TEAMS. ZOE IS GOING FOR THE 16 HUNDRED.
OH, THIS IS FOR BATTLE GROUND.
CLAIRE IS GOING FOR SHOT PUT AND AUBREY IS GOING FOR DISCUS.
WE'RE TAKING SIGNIFICANTLY LESS GIRLS.
PRAIRIE GUYS TOOK LIKE TEN TO REGIONALS.
SO VERY IMPRESSIVE. VERY IMPRESSIVE.
SO, BY THE TIME WE HAVE THE NEXT BOARD MEETING, STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL HAVE ALREADY HAPPENED.
SO, WE WILL HAVE GONE THROUGH REGIONALS AND STATE.
SO, REGIONALS ARE THIS WEEKEND.
WE HAD IT AT THIS GREAT VENUE.
ALL RIGHT. THAT WILL MOVE US ON TO COMMITTEE REPORTS.
AND WE WILL START WITH THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE.
OKAY. SO, WE HAD OUR PLEDGE REP NETWORK CALL LAST TUESDAY.
WE'RE DOING THOSE ONCE A MONTH ON TUESDAYS NOW, WHICH HELPS BECAUSE I CAN ATTEND.
AND MOST OF THE DISCUSSION WAS ABOUT MS MATERIALS, SUPPLIES AND OPERATING COSTS.
AND BECAUSE WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE PARTNERING WITH WSSA AND WSBO AND MAKING THAT A FOCUS FOR NEXT SESSION. BUT WE HAD AN INTERESTING PRESENTATION BY ONE OF THE WASA ACCOUNTANTS, AND HE WALKED US THROUGH SOME REALLY GOOD INFORMATION ABOUT THE IMPACT THAT WE DID GET A LITTLE BUMP IN STOCKS THIS YEAR, BUT IF YOU LOOKED AT THE COST OF INSURANCE AND UTILITIES, IT'S UNBELIEVABLE.
AND THE EVEN OVERALL BASIC ED IN THE STATE, WE'VE LOST OVER 10% IN THE LAST THREE BIENNIUM, IF YOU LOOK AT THE OVERALL COST. SO, THERE'S A GREAT DOCUMENT.
IT'S ABOUT 32 PAGES, BUT IT'S WELL WORTH LOOKING AT ON THE WASA WEBSITE UNDER PUBLIC PUBLICATIONS.
AND IT'S FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SCHOOL FUNDING.
GOOD. IN THAT IT GIVES YOU REALLY IN PLAIN LANGUAGE, A WAY TO TALK TO CONSTITUENTS ABOUT SCHOOL FUNDING, BECAUSE I THINK PEOPLE HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT IT.
BUT THIS, THIS TOOL, I THINK IS USER FRIENDLY.
SO, IT'S UNDER IT'S ON THE WEBSITE, UNDER PUBLICATIONS.
AND WE WENT THROUGH THAT A LITTLE BIT.
[00:25:02]
THAT'S WHAT WE DID. THANK YOU.DO WE HAVE AN AUDIT COMMITTEE REPORT.
SO, WE DID THE TYPICAL WE WENT THROUGH THE BOARD BUDGET.
WE DID PURCHASE PONCHOS FOR GRADUATION THIS YEAR IN PREPARATION.
I THINK WE DID UMBRELLAS LAST YEAR.
RIGHT. WE DID UMBRELLAS AND PONCHOS.
SO, THERE WAS AN ERROR IN THE PONCHO DISTRIBUTION, AND WE STARTED HANDING OUT PONCHOS TO EVERYBODY, NOT JUST OUR GRADUATES. SO, WE HAD TO REPLACE SOME OF THOSE.
WAS IT YOU? NO, NO, HE'S BEING PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE.
I TRIED TO BAIL YOU OUT. OKAY, SO THEN WE DID GO OVER THE SUPERINTENDENT'S BUDGET.
WE DID SOME BILLINGS FOR OFFICIALS.
IT WAS QUITE CONFUSING THE WAY THEY DID IT.
BUT IT, TO MY KNOWLEDGE, CHECKED OUT, RIGHT? I THINK THERE WAS SOME FOLLOW UP LOOKS THAT YOU WERE DOING.
I'M STILL LOOKING AT IT, BUT I DON'T.
YEAH, I DON'T THINK THERE'S GOING TO BE ANY ISSUE THERE.
WE ALSO WENT OVER THE FOOTBALL FACTORY, THEIR COMMUNITY ED VOUCHERS AND THEIR PROPORTIONS THERE AND SOME INVOICING FROM RA TO PAINT ON THAT SIDE. WE DID PAYROLL REVIEWS, CHECKED OUT SOME TIMECARDS.
EVERYTHING CHECKS OUT. IT SOUNDS LIKE HE'S GOT SOME LEAVE PLANNED.
MAYBE THIS SUMMER. IT SOUNDS LIKE.
FINALLY. SO, WE'LL GET SOME TIME OFF.
AND THEN A COUPLE OF BIG THINGS THERE.
YOU KNOW, FINANCE IS WORKING ON THE BUDGET RIGHT NOW.
SO, IT'S QUITE THE UPHILL BATTLE AND BIG PUSH TO GET EVERYTHING DONE.
THERE'S A LOT TO DO THERE THIS TIME OF YEAR.
IN ADDITION TO THAT, THEY'RE ALSO SENDING 11 FOLKS TO THE WSBO7 CONFERENCE FOR TRAINING, I FORGET.
SO, I ASSUME EVERYTHING WAS GOOD THERE.
YEAH. SO, SOME GOOD TRAINING WAS SUPPOSED TO COME OUT OF THAT.
SO NEXT MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 5TH.
YOU'LL BE IN ATTENDANCE, RIGHT, DEBBIE? YOU HAVE I BELIEVE, MAY 20TH, THAT YOU GUYS HAVE A MEETING TO KIND OF WALK THROUGH THE PROCESS, RIGHT? WE'RE STILL SETTING THAT UP.
AND, YEAH, JUNE 5TH IS THE NEXT MEETING.
AND BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION, THE BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION HAD, EXCUSE ME, HAD THEIR 30TH YEAR BIRTHDAY PARTY. IT WAS REALLY FUN.
THEY HAD SOME GREAT BASKETS THAT THEY RAFFLED.
MAGICIAN. THERE JUST A LOT OF FUN.
I JUST SAW A LOT OF A LOT OF GREAT THINGS GOING ON.
IT WAS IT WAS REALLY WELL PUT TOGETHER AND JUST A WONDERFUL CELEBRATION.
WE HAVE A MEETING THIS THURSDAY.
WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION UPDATES.
CRICKETS. IT'S NOT REALLY WSSDA, BUT I DID WATCH AN INTERESTING INTERVIEW.
CHRIS FRYKDAHL WAS ON A LOCAL VERSION OF, LIKE, GOOD MORNING AMERICA.
I WANT TO SAY, LIKE, GOOD MORNING, SEATTLE, BUT THAT DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT.
ANYWAYS, HE TALKED ABOUT SO MANY OF THE ISSUES THAT WE TALK ABOUT UNFUNDED MANDATES AND SOCKS ALL, LIKE, ALL OF THESE THINGS THAT ARE LIKE STATEWIDE DISTRICTS ARE FACING.
SO, YOU'LL GET IT MAYBE THIS WEEK.
SO, BUT IT WAS IT WAS SHORT, BUT IT WAS A GOOD LIKE UNDER TEN MINUTES.
IT WAS. AND I THOUGHT EVERYBODY WOULD ENJOY IT.
JUST KIND OF HOW HE HIT ON SEVERAL KEY POINTS THAT WERE WE TALK ABOUT ALL THE TIME.
SO THAT WAS [INAUDIBLE] OKAY, SO DIRECTOR REPORTS.
I FEEL LIKE THERE'S BEEN A LOT GOING ON.
GREAT COMPANY, LOTS OF WONDERFUL BASKETS.
A LOT OF COMMUNITY AND PARENTAL SUPPORT.
IT WAS MY FIRST TIME, AND IT WAS.
ALSO, I WENT TO COMMUNITY SALUTES, FUTURE MILITARY SERVICE MEMBERS.
[00:30:04]
THE VANCOUVER MAYOR SPOKE.MISS WASHINGTON SPOKE, WHICH MAY NOT KNOW, BUT VANESSA WAS A FORMER ARMY SERGEANT HERSELF AND GRAND PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL AND A PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL GRAD. SO, SHE WAS VERY INSPIRING.
AND A LOT OF FOLKS JUST REALLY ENJOYED LISTENING TO HER.
AND THEN, OF COURSE, VANCOUVER SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT ALSO SPOKE.
THEY'VE BEEN HELPING MILITARY FAMILIES SINCE 2008.
THEY VOLUNTEER AT THE VA HOSPITAL AND USOS.
AND THEY ALSO THERE'S A LITTLE HISTORY WHICH I FOUND PERFECT.
IF THE PERSON PASSED AWAY WHILE SERVING, THEY WERE GIVEN A GOLD STAR.
AND SO, IN HOPES THAT THE PRIDE OF THE FAMILY FELT IN HOPES FOR THE SON AND DAUGHTER WOULD RETURN.
AND I ALSO WENT TO THE BARBECUE AT GLENWOOD.
HAD TO GO BACK TO MY KID'S ALMA MATER.
KIDS WERE LAUGHING, HAVING A GREAT TIME.
IT WAS A REALLY NICE TO SEE THE PARENTS.
SEEMED TO REALLY BE ENJOYING LOTS OF PICTURES.
SO, I ENCOURAGE THEM TO DO SO.
I SKIPPED BOARD TOURS, SO WE'LL CIRCLE BACK TO THAT AFTER DIRECTOR REPORTS ARE DONE.
WELL, YEAH, I'LL COME BACK TO IT.
OKAY. YEP. OTHER DIRECTOR REPORTS? NO. OKAY, I GUESS I'LL GO.
I ALSO ATTENDED THE PRAIRIE AUCTION.
IT WAS A LOT OF FUN THIS YEAR.
THE BOOSTERS DO A REALLY GREAT JOB GETTING PEOPLE THERE, AND SO THAT WAS IN.
SORRY. THAT WAS JUST A GOOD TIME.
I WAS ALSO WENT TO THE PRAIRIE PLANT SALE.
AND THE BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL GRAD NIGHT AT BURGERVILLE.
THAT'S WHERE I'M GETTING THOSE POUNDS THAT YOU'RE GIVING AWAY.
AND IT WAS REALLY NICE TO SEE HOW BUSY ALL OF IT WAS.
THERE'S JUST A LOT OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT FOR BOTH SCHOOLS.
AND SO IT WAS JUST IT'S JUST, I DON'T KNOW, IT'S JUST THE GOOD PART ABOUT DOING THIS, RIGHT? YOU GET TO YOU GET TO SEE THE WORK IN PROGRESS.
THEY WERE WELCOMING. THEY TALKED TO PEOPLE.
THE STUDENTS, THE AGRICULTURE STUDENTS THERE ARE HORTICULTURE STUDENTS.
AND SO I REALLY ENJOYED DOING THAT.
I ALSO WENT TO I HEARD MARY WENT AND MARY LEFT, AND THEN DEBBIE WENT AND THEN DEBBIE LEFT.
AND THEN I WENT TO THE BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION BIRTHDAY.
AND IF NOBODY ELSE HAS ANYTHING, I WILL GO BACK TO SCHOOL TOURS THAT I TRIED TO SKIP.
BECAUSE I HAD IT BELOW MY SCREEN.
SO, DENNY AND JULIA AND I WENT TO TUKES VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL.
WHICH WAS GREAT. JULIE, DO YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT? SURE. OKAY.
WHEN SARA AND I WENT TO TUKES VALLEY MIDDLE FOR OUR OWN, LIKE, STUDENT TOURS, I ALREADY HAD IT AS KIND OF A FAVORITE OF MINE BECAUSE THEY HAVE JUST, THEY HAVE SOME OF THE BEST STAFF AND THE BEST STUDENTS.
IT IT'S KIND OF HARD TO EXPLAIN, LIKE THE COMMUNITY THERE, BUT IT'S JUST, IT'S SO NICE.
WE HAD A REALLY GOOD TALK WITH THE ADMIN BEFORE GOING AROUND JUST ABOUT LIKE THEIR PLANS FOR PLCS AND LIKE HOW THAT'S WORKING THEIR PLANS FOR WHAT'S THAT? WHAT HAS A SPECIAL NAME THAT I FORGOT? FIVE. YOU SHOULD LOOK AT DENNY MEMBERS LIKE STUDENTS WHO AREN'T IN CORE OR SKILLS THAT PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLERS.
[00:35:06]
YEAH, LIKE ML AND SPECIAL EDUCATION.WELL, THEY WERE USING INTERVENTIONS.
SO, THIS MIGHT NOT MAKE SENSE, BUT IT WAS VERY CLEAR TO ME THAT THE ADMIN THERE AND THE STAFF THERE CARE SOLELY ABOUT THE BENEFIT OF STUDENTS, WHICH OBVIOUSLY I REALLY APPRECIATE, AND I HOPE YOU GUYS DO TOO.
SO THAT WAS DEFINITELY A HIGHLIGHT FOR ME.
SO, THE FACT THAT THEY'RE ABLE TO PULL THAT OFF IS VERY IMPRESSIVE FOR ME, ESPECIALLY BEING THAT STUDENT WHO'S SITTING THERE AND LIKE, YOUR TEACHER IS TRYING TO MAKE YOU INTERESTED. WELL, THEY WERE SUCCEEDING.
AND THAT'S JUST ALWAYS AMAZING TO SEE.
SO, THAT'S KIND OF WHAT I HAVE TO SAY.
WELL, I WOULD AGREE WITH ALL OF IT.
I JUST REALLY APPRECIATED THE CONVERSATION BEFORE THE TOUR.
WE HAD STUDENTS AT ALL LEVELS GIVING US A TOUR.
I REALLY LIKED HOW COHESIVE IT WAS THERE, AND IT YOU COULD FEEL IT.
THEY JUST REALLY WORK WELL TOGETHER.
SO, I THINK I ENJOYED THAT TOUR A LOT.
I THINK HEATHER ISHIMURA, THE PRINCIPAL AND BEN WHO'S GOING TO BE THE PRINCIPAL.
I ALSO THOUGHT ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS WAS GOING TO THE BAND CLASS.
THEY WERE GETTING READY TO DO AN ASSESSMENT.
SO, THEY WERE PRACTICING THEIR PIECES.
AND THEN I ENJOYED GOING TO THE I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE OFFICIAL TITLE OF THE CLASS WAS, TRAVIS.
WAS IT A ROBOTICS CLASS? WAS IT STEM? YEAH, THEIR STEM CLASS, WHERE THEY WERE, THEY HAD STUDENTS WHO WERE CREATING A WHOLE BUNCH OF MERCHANDISE THAT THEY WERE THEN SELLING.
AND TALK ABOUT ENGAGEMENT FOR ALL THE STUDENTS.
WONDERFUL JOB BY THE TEACHER THERE.
SO THOSE WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR ME.
BUT OVERALL, VERY POSITIVE TOUR.
APPRECIATE EVERYTHING THAT WE SAW.
AND THEN BOARD GROUP ONE HAD A TOUR AT SUMMIT VIEW AND CASEY.
I HAD NOT BEEN TO SOME OF YOU BEFORE.
IT'S THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY I'VE HAD.
AND KEVIN GAVE US A REALLY GOOD OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM, THE STUDENTS THEY SERVE AND IT'S SO PERSONAL. HE GAVE US A TOUR OF THE SCHOOL.
AND WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT IS THOSE STUDENTS ARE GETTING BASICALLY ONE ON ONE INSTRUCTION OR SUPPORT.
AND WHILE WE WERE THERE, ACTUALLY WE JUST GOT THERE, AND A STUDENT GRADUATED.
AND, AND THAT STUDENT WILL LIKELY COME TO GRADUATION ON GRADUATION NIGHT.
BUT, YOU KNOW, THEY MIGHT GRADUATE IN DECEMBER OR JANUARY OR WHENEVER.
AND EVERYBODY MAKES A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT.
AND THEN THEY CROSS THEIR NAME OFF THE BOARD.
THE STUDENTS, THEY WHO ARE READY TO GRADUATE.
LET'S SEE, WE TALKED QUITE A BIT ABOUT THE POPULATION.
AND MY UNDERSTANDING IS RIGHT NOW THEY HAVE 320 STUDENTS THERE, WHICH I WAS SURPRISED.
SO TALKED ABOUT A LOT OF POSSIBILITIES.
YEAH, VERY POSITIVE FEELING THERE.
AND THE KEVIN WAS JUST REAL GOOD TO TALK TO.
I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND WHAT WAS GOING ON THERE.
HE WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE STAFF AND THE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND THE THINGS THAT WERE GOING ON.
ONE OF THE CHALLENGES HE SHARED WAS ABOUT STAFFING A PLACE LIKE THAT.
[00:40:05]
THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS VARY FROM MOMENT TO MOMENT, DAY TO DAY, YOU KNOW, HOUR TO HOUR.AND SO, THE STAFF HAS TO BE PREPARED TO DEAL WITH WHERE THIS STUDENT IS AT RIGHT NOW.
AND THEN THE NEXT STUDENT COMES IN AN HOUR LATER.
HE HAD A DIFFERENT STUDENT IN A DIFFERENT PLACE, LEARNING DIFFERENT THINGS.
SO, THEY HAVE TO BE VERY EXPERIENCED PEOPLE.
OKAY. AND HE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT MAYBE 15 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WAS NOT UNCOMMON TO HAVE SOMEBODY THERE WHO COULD REALLY DEAL WITH ALL OF THE KIDS NEEDS AND HELP THEM MOVE THROUGH THEIR PROGRAM.
AND NOT ONLY THAT, BUT THEN CERTIFICATION AND A LOT OF AREAS SAY SO IT'S WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, YOU TRY TO GET YOUR MIND AROUND WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO DO AND ACCOMPLISH. YOU CAN'T HAVE PEOPLE, STAFF SITTING AROUND NOT DOING ANYTHING.
I MEAN, THEY NEED TO BE WORKING WITH STUDENTS.
SO VERY CHALLENGING TO GET THOSE BALANCES.
HE TALKED ABOUT ALSO THIS IDEA OF MASTERY-BASED LEARNING, YOU KNOW, AND SO WE'RE TALKING WITH US ABOUT A HE MADE SOMETHING THAT WILL STAY. HE SAID SOMETHING STAY WILL STAY WITH ME.
AND THAT IS MOST OF THE STUDENTS HE DEALS WITH DON'T HAVE A VERY HIGH SELF-ESTEEM.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, THESE KIDS ARE TRYING TO TURN THINGS AROUND FOR THEMSELVES OFTEN.
AND, AND SO THIS MASTERY OF THINGS IN THEIR OWN TIME AND MOVING THEM FORWARD IS CHALLENGING.
AND YET THEY'RE HAVING SOME TREMENDOUS SUCCESSES.
THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT, ANYTHING ELSE BEFORE WE MOVE ON TO SUPERINTENDENT AND STAFF UPDATES?
[6. Superintendent and Staff Updates]
ALL YOURS. THAT WAS GOOD.I WAS TRYING TO SKIP OVER PARTS TO GET TO YOU FASTER.
I WANTED TO THANK DEBBIE FOR REFERENCING THE BARBECUES.
IT IS BARBECUE SEASON, AND I WANT TO THANK PUBLICLY THANK SODEXO FOR THE WORK THAT THEY DO.
RUNNING THOSE BARBECUES, THEY'RE NOT EASY.
THERE'S MASSIVE AMOUNT OF PLANNING THAT GOES INTO IT.
BUT SODEXO HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD PARTNERS, AND I HOPE BOARD THAT YOU'LL FIND MAYBE ONE THAT YOU CAN.
WE CERTAINLY THERE'S A LOT OF THEM.
WE CERTAINLY DON'T EXPECT ANYBODY TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND MORE THAN JUST 1 OR 2 OR JUST A COUPLE.
BUT IF YOU CAN, THEY ARE THEY ARE A LOT OF FUN.
IF YOU CAN GO TO THEM AND WE WILL SEND OUT CALENDAR INVITES.
BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MIGHT NOT BE ON YOUR RADAR THAT IS WELL WORTH SEEING IS WE HAVE OUR UPCOMING GRAD WALKS THAT ARE GOING TO OCCUR.
IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THIS, THIS IS WHEN OUR GRADUATING SENIORS GO BACK TO THEIR PRIMARY SCHOOLS AND WALK THE HALLS WITH TWO PURPOSES IN MIND.
PURPOSE. NUMBER ONE, OBVIOUSLY, IS TO THANK THOSE TEACHERS THAT STARTED THEM ON THEIR JOURNEY AND THEIR CAREER AND TO JUST SAY THANK YOU TO THEM AND TO THE SCHOOL AS A WHOLE.
ONE DAY YOU'RE GOING TO DON THAT CAP AND GOWN AND AND WALK THROUGH THE HALLS AND GRADUATE.
IT REALLY IS A MOVING TRIBUTE IN MANY WAYS.
AND SO IF YOU GET THE OPPORTUNITY.
SO WE'LL SEND OUT SOME TIMES IN SCHOOLS WHERE IF YOU WANTED TO CATCH THAT, YOU COULD.
OTHER THINGS THAT WE HAVE COMING UP, WE HAVE OUR FOURTH GRADE MOVE UP WHICH IS GOING TO OCCUR.
AND THAT'S ALWAYS FUN AS WELL.
LASTLY, I JUST WANTED TO POINT OUT THAT LAST WEEK WAS TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK.
SHELLY, ON BEHALF OF THE DISTRICT, SENT OUT A VERY TOUCHING AND MOVING EMAIL TO ALL OF OUR STAFF TO THANK THEM FOR THEIR HARD WORK.
[00:45:01]
COMMENTS THAT WE HAD SOLICITED FROM STUDENTS AND PARENTS AND VOLUNTEERS ABOUT OUR GREAT TEACHERS.AND YOU CAN ACCESS THAT BY JUST GOING TO OUR WEBSITE.
IT'S ON THE MAIN PAGE, AND THAT WAS MEANINGFUL.
BUT I ALSO WANT TO RECOGNIZE ALL OF OUR TEACHERS FOR THE WORK THAT THEY DO AND THE JUST THE DEDICATION, THE COMMITMENT AND THE PASSION BY WHICH THEY WORK SO HARD TO MAKE OUR STUDENTS SUCCESSFUL IN THE DIFFERENCE THAT THEY MAKE.
AND I THINK I OFTENTIMES THINK OF LIKE A MEETING THAT WE HAD TODAY AND THE WAY THAT MEETING STARTED, AND WE SAW OUR TC STUDENTS, AND THEN WE SAW OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, AND THEN WE HEAR FROM OUR FANTASTIC STUDENT REPS.
AND YOU CAN'T HELP BUT TO BE PROUD OF ALL OF THAT.
AND IT ALL STARTS WITH HOW GREAT OUR STAFF IS.
THANK YOU FOR TEACHER APPRECIATION.
CONGRATULATIONS ON TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK.
AND WITH THAT, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO MICHELLE.
SO JUST A COUPLE OF THINGS TO TOUCH ON.
SO AS DENNY MENTIONED, IT WAS WE FORMALLY KNOWN AS TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK.
IT'S ALSO CERTIFICATED APPRECIATION WEEK.
IT'S YOUR SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS.
IT'S ALL OF OUR CERTIFICATED STAFF IN THE, IN THE BUILDING THAT WE HONOR.
AND SO, WE ARE GREATLY APPRECIATIVE OF ALL OF THEM.
WE HAVE COME TO A POINT WHERE WE'VE HAD POSITIONS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN DISPLACED.
AND SO, WE'VE KIND OF WORKED THROUGH ALL OF THAT.
WE WOULD LIKE TONIGHT TO BE ABLE TO SHARE WITH YOU THOSE TEACHERS AND STAFF WHO HAVE DECIDED TO RETIRE AND MOVE ON TO THIS NEXT CHAPTER IN THEIR LIFE.
WE HAVE A SLIDESHOW WE'D LIKE TO, TO PRESENT.
WE HAVE QUITE A FEW PEOPLE HERE WHO HAVE BEEN WITH OUR DISTRICT.
SO, IF WE CAN JUST KIND OF GO TO THE FIRST SLIDE AND THIS IS ALL OF OUR CERTIFICATED STAFF.
SO, THIS INCLUDES A VARIETY OF A VARIETY OF CERTIFICATED TEACHERS AS WELL AS ESA STAFF.
SO, ISN'T IT JUST WHEN YOU LOOK AT THAT FIRST GROUP 20 TO 25 YEARS? SO, MARY CHACO IS A 3RD GRADE TEACHER AT GLENWOOD HEIGHTS PRIMARY.
CAROL MCKEE IS A 3RD GRADE TEACHER AT GLENWOOD HEIGHTS PRIMARY.
SUSAN RAYMOND IS A PRIMARY TEACHER AT RIVER HOMELINK.
ALEX DEWITT IS A SCIENCE TEACHER AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.
AND THOSE WERE THE GROUP IN THE 20 TO 25 YEARS.
YEAH. MANY OF THEM HAVE [INAUDIBLE] CAREERS THAT.
YEAH. THE NEXT GROUP IS THE 26 TO 30 YEARS.
SO, MICHAEL CLAPP IS A SCIENCE TEACHER AT CAM.
GREG MCKELVEY, BAND DIRECTOR AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, DARCY SCHMIDT MUSIC TEACHER AT TVP.
SUSAN CRAIL IS AN ASPIRE TEACHER AT CAPTAIN STRONG PRIMARY TEACHING THIRD GRADE.
PAUL WALTER, PE TEACHER AT DAYBREAK PRIMARY.
SO THAT IS OUR CERTIFICATED STAFF, SO WE CAN GIVE THEM A ROUND.
COLLECTIVELY. THAT'S MANY, MANY YEARS.
THE NEXT SLIDE HERE IS OUR CLASSIFIED RETIREES.
SO THAT FIRST GROUP, THEY'RE 20 TO 20 TO 25 YEARS.
DONNA BARR IS AN SCA AT TUKES VALLEY MIDDLE.
CINDY MILLER, I BELIEVE, ASB SECRETARY AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.
JIMMY NORMAN IS A CUSTODIAN AT AMBOY MIDDLE SCHOOL.
NANCY HARDY IS ALSO A CUSTODIAN AT CHIEF MIDDLE SCHOOL.
[00:50:02]
KAREN SAUER, SHE IS OUR CERTIFICATED SPECIALIST AT DISTRICT OFFICE IN HR.CHERYL SPENCER, SECRETARY AT CAM.
AND THEN NEXT GROUP FOR 26 TO 30 YEARS.
AND THEN THE LAST GROUP, MORE THAN 30 YEARS, CINDY BROOKS, ASB SECRETARY AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, AND VIVI WITT SHE IS THE SECRETARY AT OPERATIONS.
SO, LET'S GO AHEAD AND GIVE THEM A ROUND OF APPLAUSE.
SO MANY OF OUR SCHOOLS WILL BE HONORING THEM THROUGH A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT CELEBRATIONS.
AS A DISTRICT, WE SEND OUT CARDS WITH PASSES AS WELL TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND DIFFERENT EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. SO, AND THAT'S ALL I HAVE.
MICHELLE, THANK YOU FOR DOING THAT.
MICHELLE. SCOTT. I JUST HAD A QUICK ANNOUNCEMENT THAT BY A VOTE OF THE MEMBERSHIP FOR THE OXBOW AND THAT'S THE WASHINGTON ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL BUSINESS OFFICIALS.
I WAS VOTED IN AS A BOARD MEMBER, BOARD DIRECTOR THERE FOR REGION 112, AND I'LL BE REPRESENTING OVER 30 SCHOOLS IN THE ESD 112 REGION.
SO, I'M VERY EXCITED TO SERVE AN ORGANIZATION THAT HAS BEEN AMAZING TO HELP BRING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO SCHOOL BUSINESS OFFICIALS, NETWORKING, CONNECTING.
IT'S BEEN AN AMAZING ORGANIZATION.
SO, I WILL HAVE A THREE-YEAR TERM WITH THEM AND I'M JUST VERY EXCITED.
MICHELLE IS VERY MODEST, BUT SHE HAS SHE CONTINUES TO DO THINGS LIKE THIS.
EVEN THOUGH, YOU KNOW, SHE'S GIVING BACK TO HER ORGANIZATION, IT ALSO BRINGS A LOT OF ATTENTION AND GOODWILL TO US AS A DISTRICT. AND, YOU KNOW, RECOGNIZES THE QUALITY OF EMPLOYEES THAT WE HAVE.
SO, IT'S JUST A CREDIT TO HER LEVEL OF PROFESSIONALISM AND HOW GOOD SHE IS AT HER JOB.
SO, YOU HEARD ME FOR A HALF HOUR.
SO, YOU HEARD ME FOR A HALF HOUR BEFORE THE BOARD MEETING STARTED.
THANK YOU. AND COMMUNICATIONS.
GOT SEVERAL POSITIVE THINGS TO SHARE WITH YOU.
SO, IT'S KIND OF NEAT TO SEE THEM COMPETING AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL.
RECENTLY WE HELD THE 4TH GRADE CAREER FAIR.
SO, WE APPRECIATE EVERYONE WHO IS INVOLVED IN THAT.
ON THE LEFT IS A PICTURE OF A RECENT SUMMIT VIEW STUDENT.
AND YOU CAN READ HER POEM ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE.
AND ON THE RIGHT IS A PHOTO OF SOME OF THE STUDENTS WHO RECEIVED AWARDS AT THE SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON MATH CHALLENGE IN APRIL, AND THAT BROUGHT TOGETHER STUDENTS FROM MIDDLE SCHOOLS ALL OVER THE DISTRICT, AND THEY COMPETED IN A VARIETY OF CATEGORIES, FROM MENTAL MATH TO A COLLEGE BOWL COMPETITION AND INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM ROUNDS.
YOU CAN SEE ALL THE PHOTOS AND RESULTS ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE AS WELL.
AND WE HAVE A COUPLE NEW EPISODES OF THE BG CAST PODCAST, ONE FOCUSING ON MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS AND WHAT THAT'S LIKE SINCE THEY'VE BEEN BACK IN THE DISTRICT SINCE 2021.
[00:55:01]
AND THEN ON THE RIGHT IS A SPECIAL EPISODE THAT WE DID INVOLVING TEACHERS FROM ALL OVER THE DISTRICT WHO PARTICIPATED IN A PANEL DISCUSSION LAST FEBRUARY, AND I THINK SOME OF THE BOARD WAS THERE FOR THAT.AND THEN DANNY KIND OF STOLE THE THUNDER EARLIER, BUT THAT'S OKAY.
CHRIS BROWN AND JENNA BUSHELL ON THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM REALLY DID A GREAT JOB PUTTING TOGETHER ALL THE SUBMISSIONS THAT WE RECEIVED FROM STUDENTS AND PARENTS AND GUARDIANS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS. I THINK THERE WERE MORE THAN 100, SO IT'S REALLY NEAT TO LOOK THROUGH ALL OF THEM.
IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO LOOK ON THE WEBSITE AND THEN ON THE NEXT SLIDE, IT IS DISTRICT ART SHOW TIME.
SO, THE ART SHOW WEB PAGE IS LIVE.
THERE'S A LOT OF INCREDIBLE ARTWORK THIS YEAR AS THERE IS EVERY YEAR.
SO, THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD VOTING IS GOING ON NOW THROUGH MAY 15TH.
SIGNED CONTRACTS OR THE CONTRACT LIST FOR BOARD REVIEW.
THERE WAS A NEW, PROBABLY NOT NEW, BUT THE FIRST TIME I SAW IT FUNDED BY RESALE ACCOUNT.
CAN YOU TELL WHAT THAT IS? YEAH. THAT IS WHEN THEY'RE DOING FUNDRAISING, GENERAL FUND FUNDRAISING.
AND SO, THEY BRING IN THE MONEY AND THEN IT'S AND SO IT'S, IT'S BROUGHT IN THROUGH A RESALE ACCOUNT.
THEY SELL SOMETHING AND THEN THEY SPEND THE MONEY ON WHATEVER THAT CONTRACTED ITEM IS.
THAT WAS NEW I LOOKED BACK; WE HADN'T HAD ONE FOR A WHILE ON THAT.
YEAH. CAN'T PUSH ANYTHING PAST JACKIE.
[7. Citizens' Comments]
NEXT UP, WE HAVE CITIZENS COMMENTS.NO, SORA WILL BE HOLDING UP FOR THOSE SPEAKING.
SHE WILL GIVE YOU A WARNING WHEN YOU HAVE 30S LEFT AND FLASH A YELLOW SIGN, A RED ONE.
WE ASK THAT YOU LIMIT YOURSELF TO THREE MINUTES.
THAT YOU COME TO THE BOARD OR TO THE PODIUM AND STATE YOUR NAME.
AND TELL US WHAT YOU WANT TO TELL US.
EUNICE INGERMANSON, IF YOU'D LIKE TO COME SPEAK.
MY NAME IS EUNICE INGERMANSON.
I USE SHE HER PRONOUNS AND I LIVE IN THIS DISTRICT.
EVER SINCE MY CHILD CAME OUT AS LGBTQ SEVEN YEARS AGO, AND THAT OCCASIONED ME TO RETHINK AND CHANGE MY MORAL JUDGMENT ABOUT AND ATTITUDE TOWARD LGBTQ PEOPLE.
IT'S BEEN MY PRIVILEGE TO WORK ON SUPPORTING LGBTQ YOUTH IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND DIALOGING WITH PEOPLE IN THE FAITH COMMUNITY TO HELP THEM RETHINK THEIR POSITIONS, HOPEFULLY BEFORE THEIR CHILDREN COME OUT SO THEIR CHILDREN CAN ALWAYS BE LOVED AND SAFE IN THEIR HOMES, WHATEVER IS GOING ON IN THEIR LIVES.
CENTURIES AGO, IT TOOK A WHILE FOR THE CHURCH TO CATCH UP WITH SCIENCE AND MOVE AWAY FROM GEO-CENTRISM, AND IT HASN'T COMPLETED THAT MOVE. IT IS SIMILAR NOW WITH LGBTQ CHRISTIAN IN THE FAITH COMMUNITIES.
I NOW ATTEND INCLUSIVE CHURCHES, BUT MANY DENOMINATIONS IN CONGREGATIONS ARE EITHER ANTI-SCIENCE WHEN IT COMES TO GENDER IDENTITY AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION, OR SOMEWHERE IN THEIR SLOW EVOLUTION TOWARD INCLUSION.
MANY KIDS PICK UP FROM THESE SPACES' CONTEMPT TOWARD OTHERS AND SELVES WHEN THEY DON'T FIT NEATLY IN THE BINARY BOXES AND ACTED OUT AT SCHOOL.
I HAVE EARS ON THE GROUND, AND OUR LGBTQ KIDS FEEL EXHAUSTED BY THE EVERYDAY BULLYING, TAUNTING, BARKING DIRECTED TOWARD THEM.
I AND MY COLLEAGUES WILL MOVE ON WORK ON MOVING THE NEEDLE IN THE FAITH COMMUNITIES TOWARD INCLUSION FOR UPSTREAM PREVENTION, AND YOU CAN ADOPT THE BEST PRACTICES THAT OSPI AND LGBTQ SERVING ORGANIZATIONS RECOMMEND HELPING OUR
[01:00:04]
LGBTQ KIDS AND EVERYONE ELSE THRIVE.AT THE LEAST, LET OUR LGBTQ KIDS KNOW YOU HAVE THEIR BACKS BY TAKING PROMPT ACTIONS WHEN THEY COMPLAIN OF BULLYING AT SCHOOL. BELIEVE THEIR REPORTS.
DEAL PROMPTLY WITH THE BULLIES AND PROVE TO THEM BY YOUR ACTIONS THAT THEY'RE THAT THE SAFE SCHOOLS ALERTS ON THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND SCHOOL WEBSITES ACTUALLY WORK.
THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TO HELP OUR KIDS FEEL SAFE AND THRIVE.
SURE. NEXT, WE HAVE WHEN I'M GOING TO SAY IT WRONG.
WOULD YOU LIKE A PIECE? YOU WANT THIS FOR YOU GUYS TO.
HI, MY NAME IS. IS IT? MY NAME IS WINGER AND I GRADUATED 50 YEARS AGO.
WE PROTESTED FOR SCHOLARSHIPS IN SPORTS.
SO, I HAVE, FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS, BEEN AN ACTIVIST, AND MY GOAL IS TO I WANT TO STOP THE THINGS THAT CAUSE CANCER.
AND WHEN I WAS A HAIRDRESSER, I SHAVED PEOPLE'S HEADS BALD.
ALL OF THIS WAS BECAUSE THE UNITED NATIONS DID A LOT OF THINGS IN SAN FRANCISCO.
FIRST, THEY HAD A CONVENTION AT THE MOSCONE CENTER JUNE 5TH, 2005, AND DR.
AND THE ONLY THING THAT CUTS THE SMELL OF POOP IS AMMONIA.
AND THEY WERE GOING TO DO THIS GLOBALLY.
AND THEY'RE ALL TOUTING THE USE OF USING CHLORAMINE.
YOU SHOULD READ IT, BECAUSE THAT THING'S 20 YEARS OLD.
IT'S CAUSED A LOT OF PROBLEMS. IT CAUSES STROKES AND HEMORRHAGIC BLEEDING AND WOMEN MORE SO THAN MEN AND IN DIABETIC AND CHEMOTHERAPY PATIENTS AND IN THE PLACES THAT THEY USE IT, IT LEACHES LEAD FROM THE WATER PIPES. SO, A LOT OF PEOPLE GOT LEAD POISONING FROM THAT.
WELL, NOW BIDEN'S TALKING ABOUT REPLACING LEAD LINES.
AND THE FACT IS THAT THESE LEAD LINES, LARS LARSON SAID IT WAS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AND IN FROM CALIFORNIA, THE LEAD LINES, THEY HAD A SEWER LINE GOING DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET AND THEN A PIPE THAT GOES UP TO THE SIDEWALK AND THEN TO YOUR HOUSE BECAUSE THE CITIES DIDN'T WANT TO PAY FOR THAT ANYMORE. THEY'RE GOING TO CHARGE THE HOMEOWNERS.
SO, IT WAS ABOUT A $10,000 TO HAVE IT REPLACED.
SO, A LOT OF PEOPLE'S LINES WERE BREAKING AND ALL KINDS OF THINGS THAT MAY HAPPEN UP HERE.
WE NEED TO GET ROUNDUP BANNED IN THIS STATE.
WE NEED TO GET IT OUT OF THE ALL THE HOMEOWNERS THAT SPRAY THEIR YARD AND YOUR PLAYGROUNDS.
NO ROUNDUP AND ROUNDUP IS IN THE VACCINES.
IT'S THE ROUNDUP. THE GLYSOPHATE THAT TURNS PEOPLE TRANS.
WE NEED TO GET IT BANNED HERE.
OKAY, ON TO THE CONSENT AGENDA.
[8. Consent Agenda (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]
[01:05:03]
ON TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA, WE HAVE ITEMS A THROUGH G.WE HAVE THE APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM THE APRIL 22ND, 2024, REGULAR BOARD MEETING.
BUSINESS AND OPERATIONS PERSONNEL REPORTS, STUDENT TRAVEL, FINANCIAL REPORTS AND COMPLETED PROJECTS.
ARE THERE ANY ITEMS THAT NEED DISCUSSION OR REMOVE TO INDIVIDUAL ITEMS FOR A LATER VOTE? I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.
ALL RIGHT. WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
THANK YOU. ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? CONCERNS. COMMENTS? HEARING? NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5 TO 0.
WE HAVE NO OLD BUSINESS TONIGHT.
[10. New Business (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]
MICHELLE REINHARDT.SO, WHAT I HAVE BEFORE YOU TONIGHT IS A RESOLUTION TO ADOPT A MODIFIED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM.
WE HAVE COMPLETED OUR STAFFING WITH THE CTE CLASSES.
THIS IS NOT A BUDGETARY REDUCTION.
THIS IS BASED ON STUDENT REQUESTS.
AND SO, WHAT THAT RESULTS IN IS THAT THERE ARE SOME SECTIONS THAT WE DON'T WE DON'T NEED.
AND SO, IT'S A TOTAL OF 8.8 FTE.
SO CTE CLASSES THAT WE ARE ELIMINATING THOSE ARE OUTLINED IN EXHIBIT ONE.
WE'RE ELIMINATING THAT ENTIRE COURSE.
IT JUST MEANS ONE SECTION OR TWO SECTIONS DEPENDING ON WHAT STUDENTS HAVE FORECASTED.
WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO LET CERTIFICATED STAFF KNOW BY MAY 15TH.
WE NEED TO LET THEM KNOW IF THERE IF THERE, THERE IS A REDUCTION IN THEIR FTE.
AND SO THAT IS WHY WE ARE PRESENTING THIS TO YOU THIS EVENING.
IT'S NOT UNCOMMON FOR US, ESPECIALLY WITH CTE, FOR THOSE COURSES TO COME BACK, ADDING A SECTION HERE OR THERE THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF THE SUMMER AND INTO THE, INTO THE FALL BASED OFF STUDENT REQUESTS.
SO, ANY QUESTIONS? I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT IT, BUT I'M SO HAPPY TO HEAR THAT THERE'S ALL THIS FLEXIBILITY.
I JUST WANT TO PUT OUT THERE THAT THE CTE PROGRAM IS REALLY SPECTACULARLY IMPORTANT.
QUESTIONS. AGAIN, IT'S NOT BUDGETARY.
IT IS BASED OFF FORECASTING STUDENT REQUESTS.
SO, THE FACT THAT WE HAVE THAT FLEXIBILITY, IT'S REALLY COOL.
WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR RESOLUTION D.24.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5 TO 0.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, MICHELLE.
SO, ABOUT OCTOBER OF LAST SCHOOL YEAR, I STARTED A PROCESS OF WANTING TO UPDATE POLICY 2420.
AND I KNOW YOU HAVE THE INFORMATION IN FRONT OF YOU, SO I WON'T READ.
I WON'T READ THE NEW POLICY IN ITS ENTIRETY.
I WANTED TO FOCUS REALLY ON TWO THINGS.
AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, ASKING HIGH SCHOOL AND WE'RE JUST TALKING ABOUT OUR COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOLS.
SO, PRAIRIE AND BATTLE GROUND, THIS IS SPECIFIC TO THEM.
WE WOULD NOT ADDRESS OUR ALA HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENCES OF THE PROGRAMS. SO, WHEN I STARTED THE CONVERSATIONS WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS, THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY 23 TEACHERS THAT I SPOKE TO SPLIT RELATIVELY EVENLY BETWEEN BATTLE GROUND AND PRAIRIE. AND IT STARTED WITH JUST SOME GENERAL QUESTIONS AROUND THEIR GRADING PHILOSOPHY.
AND THROUGH THE PAST 20 MONTHS.
WE BEGAN BY GETTING GENERAL FEEDBACK FROM THOSE TEACHERS.
[01:10:02]
I DEVELOPED A VERY ROUGH DRAFT, SENT IT BACK TO THE TEACHERS, MADE REVISIONS BASED ON THAT.AT THE END OF LAST YEAR, THERE WAS A STOPPING POINT WHERE EVERY INDIVIDUAL PERSON I SPOKE WITH WAS COMFORTABLE WITH THE REVISIONS THAT WERE MADE AT THAT TIME. FROM THERE, THIS YEAR, WE'VE GOTTEN IT OUT INTO THE LEADERSHIP TEAMS AT BOTH PRAIRIE AND BATTLE GROUND.
WE MADE FURTHER FURTHER REVISIONS BASED ON THEIR FEEDBACK.
AND SO WHAT YOU SEE IN FRONT OF YOU IS A VERSION THAT WE FEEL WILL HELP US COLLECT DATA.
OUR SMARTER, BALANCED RESULTS COME AT THE END OF THE YEAR.
THAT DOESN'T ALLOW US TO REALLY RESPOND DURING THE YEAR.
AND SO THE GOAL WITH THE GRADING PRACTICES IS REALLY WHAT WHAT IS IN THE PROPOSED LANGUAGE TO DEVELOP DATA THAT ALLOWS US TO DETERMINE A STUDENT'S UNDERSTANDING OF THE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS OF THAT CLASS.
AND WE NEED TO HAVE SOME CONSISTENCY BETWEEN TEACHERS FOR STUDENT GRADES.
ANY QUESTIONS? SO THAT SECTION THAT YOU ADDED, THE COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL GRADING GUIDANCE, YOU'VE GOT FOUR BULLETS OR FOUR NUMBERS THERE.
THAT'S WHAT THE TEACHERS HAVE AGREED WAS THE FOCUS OF THIS, OF OUR GRADING AT THAT AT THIS LEVEL.
BUT I DO SAY WITH A, WITH A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF CONFIDENCE AND TRANSPARENCY THAT WE WORKED THROUGH ALL OF THE STRUGGLES, FOR EXAMPLE ACTUALLY WITH THAT NUMBER FOR THE GRADES WILL BE UPDATED EVERY SIX WEEKS.
THERE WERE 1 OR 2 PEOPLE WHO FELT LIKE THAT WASN'T NECESSARILY FAIR.
THERE WERE MORE TEACHERS WHO WERE FRUSTRATED THAT IT WAS ONLY SIX WEEKS.
THEY WANTED IT TO BE MORE FREQUENT THAN SIX WEEKS.
THERE ACTUALLY WASN'T MUCH DISCUSSION AROUND THAT, WHICH KIND OF SURPRISED ME.
AND NUMBER 2ND MAY SOUND MORE RESTRICTIVE THAN IT REALLY LOOKS.
SO, WE ARE NOT ASKING TEACHERS TO TEACH IDENTICALLY.
SO, WE HAVE DATA THAT WE CAN USE TO IDENTIFY THE SUPPORTS NEEDED FOR THE STUDENTS.
I THINK THAT ONE OF MY BIGGEST ISSUES I'VE HAD THROUGH THE YEARS IS THE INCONSISTENCIES BETWEEN, LIKE YOU SAID, THE SIMILAR CLASSES, DIFFERENT TEACHERS, YOU KNOW, AND I'VE GOT THREE BOYS TO GO THROUGH THE SYSTEM.
AND THEN IT'S LIKE MY CLASS IS WAY HARDER BECAUSE I HAD THIS PERSON, WELL, IT'S THE SAME CLASS.
WHY IS IT HARDER? AND AGAIN, BECAUSE THERE'S INCONSISTENCIES WITH THE WAY THOSE THINGS ARE DONE.
IF WE'RE GETTING TOGETHER AND TRYING TO MAKE EVERYTHING THE SAME, WE'RE TEACHING THE SAME.
WE'RE DOING THIS. AND WHY AREN'T WE GRADING THE SAME? I LIKE THE COMMENT ABOUT THE EXTRA CREDIT.
IF YOU'RE GOING TO OFFER THEM THOSE EXTRA CREDITS.
AND THAT SHOULD BE CONSISTENT ACROSS THE BOARD.
YOU KNOW, I GET A WEEKLY EMAIL FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL WITH MY KIDS, REPORT CARDS ON IT, AND I SAY, WHAT IS THIS? AND THEY'RE LIKE, WELL, NO, THAT'S NOT RIGHT.
BECAUSE I'VE GOT SIX ASSIGNMENTS THAT HE HASN'T EVEN GRADED YET.
I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT MY KIDS' GRADES ARE BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT UPDATED IN SCHOOLWORK.
SO, I'M LIKE, YEAH, CAN THAT BE WEEKLY? YOU KNOW, THAT'S BUT I GET IT.
[01:15:01]
I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE'S A WORKLOAD, YOU KNOW.AND I THINK THAT WAS ONE OF THE CHALLENGES WITH THIS.
AND I WON'T CALL OUT ANY OTHER DISTRICTS OF COURSE.
SO, THERE'S RECOGNITION THAT OUR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS ARE SEEING 150 PLUS STUDENTS.
SOME OF THEM ARE SEEING 150 PLUS STUDENTS A DAY.
AND SO, WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO IS MOVE THE NEEDLE LIKE DENNY SAID YOU KNOW, I DON'T I DON'T THINK THERE'S GOING TO BE POLICY LANGUAGE THAT'S GOING TO APPEASE EVERYONE ON, ON ALL DIFFERENT SIDES.
YEAH. THANK YOU. YEAH, ABSOLUTELY.
AND MY HOPE IS NEXT YEAR AROUND THIS TIME I'LL BE STANDING UP HERE WITH SOME MIDDLE SCHOOL LANGUAGE.
THERE'S SO MANY THINGS I'D LOVE TO MENTION, BUT I WON'T.
I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THOUGH, FOR YOU TO SPEAK TO CLEARLY SO THAT PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND.
TO WHAT EXTENT? DID THE TEACHERS HAVE TO HAVE THEIR ARMS TWISTED OR THAT ACTUALLY THIS POLICY CAME FROM THEM? THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION.
DEFINITELY NOT 100% AGREEMENT.
I, I KNOW THAT WE HAD GREAT CONVERSATIONS AT BOTH BUILDINGS, AND I THINK WE WALKED AWAY WITH COMMON UNDERSTANDING, EVEN IF WE WEREN'T COMPLETELY IN AGREEMENT.
SO I WOULDN'T SAY THERE IS ANY ANY ARM TWISTING.
TEACHERS GENUINELY WANT WHAT'S IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE STUDENTS.
AND MY MY THEORY IS THAT THERE'S SO FEW THINGS THAT TEACHERS CAN CONTROL.
GRADING POLICY IS ONE OF THEM.
AND SO THEY'RE DOING, YOU KNOW, MANY OF THEM ARE DOING WHAT THEY'VE ALWAYS DONE.
THAT'S THE POINT. I THINK EVERYBODY IN THE COMMUNITY NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND.
THE TEACHERS ARE REALLY WORKING HARD TO COME UP WITH THIS STUFF.
IT'S NOT LIKE THEY'RE BEING PUSHED THROUGH INTO SOMETHING THEY DON'T WANT.
CORRECT. THIS IS A TEAM THING, AND IT'S VERY GOOD WORK THAT YOU GUYS DID.
YEAH. THANK YOU. AND I WOULD EXPECT THERE WILL BE CONVERSATIONS.
THERE ARE SOME DYNAMICS, CTE TEACHERS AND PARTICIPATION-BASED CLASSES.
YOU KNOW, MANY OF THEM ARE EXACTLY THAT.
THEY ARE PARTICIPATION PROJECT-BASED CLASSES.
I JUST CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, BUT I'M ASSUMING THAT THE REASON THAT THE LANGUAGE ABOUT ATTENDANCE AND TARDINESS WAS REMOVED WAS BECAUSE THAT'S COVERED UNDER OTHER POLICIES, SO THAT BECOMES REDUNDANT AT THIS POINT.
YOU KNOW, BECAUSE IF IT'S AN EXCUSED ABSENCE, THEN YOU ARE YOU NEED TO HAVE ACCESS TO THAT WORK.
AND IT IS COVERED IN OTHER POLICIES.
SO, I UNDERSTAND PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE ARE NOT A PART OF THE GRADING PROCESS.
IS THAT WHAT I'M READING OR AM I MISREADING.
SO WHERE ARE YOU? ARE YOU AT BULLET POINT NUMBER ONE? I'M JUST READING THE OVERALL POLICY AND THAT'S WHAT I THAT'S WHAT I READ.
SO, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I READ IT CORRECTLY IF YOU WANT TO CLARIFY THAT FOR ME.
IN GENERAL, A STUDENT'S ABILITY TO DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF THE STANDARDS IN THE CLASS, AND I'M NOT TRYING TO SPEAK AROUND IT, DEBBIE, BUT I WOULD SAY PHILOSOPHICALLY, IF A STUDENT CAN DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY UNDERSTAND THE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS OF THAT CLASS, THEN ATTENDANCE WOULD BE LESS OF A CONCERN.
AND SO WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE ATTENDANCE CHALLENGES AT ALL SCHOOLS, ALL LEVELS.
AND WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO, OF COURSE, AND TEACHERS ARE DOING THIS.
THEY'RE TRYING TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT STUDENTS WANT TO BE A PART OF.
AND WE'RE ALSO TRYING TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WHO ARE HAVING OUTSIDE TROUBLES TO GAIN ACCESS TO SCHOOL.
I MEAN, FOR SOME STUDENTS, LIFE IS A CHALLENGE.
SO, I THINK WHAT THE PURPOSE OF THIS IS TO BE ABLE TO SIT DOWN WITH A STUDENT AND FAMILY AND SAY, WE'RE NOT PUNISHING YOUR STUDENT FOR NOT COMING TO SCHOOL, BUT IF WE CAN'T SEE THE DEMONSTRATION OF THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE STANDARDS OF THAT CLASS, WE CAN'T NECESSARILY ISSUE A GRADE.
SO, AND DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION?
[01:20:03]
CAN I JUMP IN HERE PLEASE.AND THAT'S A THAT'S A SHIFT IN OUR MINDS.
THAT'S A SHIFT IN THE PARENTS' MINDS AND OFTEN SHIFT IN TEACHERS' MINDS.
AND SO, WHEN YOU, WHEN YOU BASE THE GRADE ON, ON ATTENDANCE, FOR INSTANCE, YOU'RE NOT NECESSARILY BASING IT ON THE LEARNING OR THE UNDERSTANDING.
I THINK THAT'S; IS THAT BASICALLY WHAT YOU'RE SAYING? YEAH, IT'S TRYING TO NOT SAY STANDARDS-BASED GRADING BECAUSE THIS ISN'T A THIS ISN'T A WAY OF GETTING STANDARDS-BASED GRADING IN PLACE.
I COULD GIVE YOU OTHER EXAMPLES WHERE YOU CAN TAKE THAT SAME TEST OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PAY FOR IT, BUT YOU MAY FINALLY BE ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF THAT.
THE ISSUE WITH STANDARDS-BASED GRADING, AND WHERE IT BREAKS DOWN AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL IS IF I'M EXPECTED AS A TEACHER TO TAKE JACKIE'S 12 ATTEMPTS ON THIS ASSIGNMENT AND I HAVE 150 STUDENTS, THAT BECOMES OVERWHELMING FOR A TEACHER.
AND IT'S NOT NECESSARILY PRACTICAL, BUT I'LL PASS IT THE 13TH TIME.
YOU MIGHT, I MIGHT, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PAY FOR IT, BUT YOU MIGHT.
IS THERE A CORRELATION? YES, A VERY HIGH CORRELATION.
BUT, YOU KNOW, WE'VE ALL SEEN STUDENTS WHO HAVE MISSED SCHOOL DAYS BECAUSE OF, YOU KNOW, SEVERE ILLNESS OR TRAGEDY THAT HAVE WORKED THROUGH IT AND WERE ABLE TO OVERCOME.
SO, WHAT THIS OFFERS US IS A LEVEL OF FLEXIBILITY THAT, AGAIN, IS TIED INTO THE ABILITY OF THE STUDENT TO PERFORM AT THE END RESULT, WHICH IS WHAT WE WANT, NEVER WANT TO WANT TO LOWER STANDARDS.
THAT'S ALWAYS MY CONCERN BECAUSE I THINK IT'S REAL EASY TO DO THAT.
I'M A BELIEVER THAT PEOPLE RISE TO THE STANDARD, WHATEVER YOU MAKE, THAT THEY THE KIDS WILL RISE.
AND SO THAT'S THE ONLY CONCERN I HAVE.
WHEN I READ THIS, AND I WANTED TO MAKE SURE I UNDERSTOOD THE INTENT THAT IT WASN'T LOWERING THE STANDARDS, THAT IT WAS ACTUALLY HOPING TO BRING MORE SUCCESS TO STUDENTS WHO MAYBE ARE HAVING SOME SOCIAL ISSUES OR MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS. YEAH, I THINK I THINK THAT I THINK REALLY WHAT IN MY MIND, THE INTENT IS TO CLARIFY THE STANDARD, LIKE CLARIFY THE GOAL.
YOU KNOW, SO MANY TIMES AND MANY WE'VE ALL BEEN IN SCHOOL.
YOU KNOW, I COULD BRING IN EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS.
BUT I WOULD SHOW UP EVERY DAY, AND I WAS KIND.
WE USED TO USE THE TERM THAT WE.
WHAT? WE DON'T. WANT STUDENTS TO BE TO GRADUATE WITH IS THE IDEA THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO PLAY SCHOOL.
WE'RE NOT SAYING THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU.
WE'RE DEFINITELY NOT SAYING YOU'RE NOT INTELLIGENT.
WE ARE SAYING THAT THIS IS A FIVE DAY A WEEK SCHOOL, AND YOU SHOW UP ONE DAY A WEEK, SO MAYBE WE CAN FIND ALTERNATIVES LIKE SOME OF YOU, LIKE AN ONLINE PROGRAM THAT WOULD ALLOW YOU TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE TO THAT CONTENT, YOU KNOW, WITHOUT HAVING THE ABSENCES HAPPEN EVERY SINGLE DAY.
YOU JUST NEED TO SHOW THAT YOU KNOW THE CONTENT.
BUT, YOU KNOW, I THINK SARAH AND JULIA ARE GOOD EXAMPLES OF PROBABLY STUDENTS WHO PLAY SCHOOL REALLY WELL, BUT ALSO HAVE THE ABILITY TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE STANDARDS OF THOSE COURSES.
AND SO, THE GOAL WITH THIS IS TO MAKE SURE THAT IF SORA EARNS ONE A MINUS IN HER ENTIRE ACADEMIC CAREER, THAT THAT A MINUS IS DEMONSTRATING OR IS SHOWING THAT THAT'S HOW MUCH SHE UNDERSTANDS THE CONTENT OF THAT CLASS.
SORRY, SORA, PROBABLY A BAD EXAMPLE.
I SHOULDN'T HAVE BROUGHT THAT UP. PUTTING ME IN A BAD MOOD.
[01:25:01]
WELL, I'D LIKE TO KIND OF JUST SAY AS WELL THAT OBVIOUSLY ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT AND VERY IMPORTANT.BUT ALSO, LIKE, I CAN SPEAK TO LIKE THINGS GETTING IN THE WAY OF GOING TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY, LIKE LAST WEEK, OBVIOUSLY THERE WERE AP TESTS, AND I DIDN'T GO FIVE OUT OF FIVE DAYS, BUT THAT WAS FOR OTHER THINGS.
LIKE WHEN I HAVE SCHOOL BOARD TOURS, I DON'T GO FOR THAT FOR SPORTS, SOMETIMES PEOPLE DON'T GO, AND IT DOES ADD UP WHEN YOU'RE INVOLVED WITH LIKE A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS AND ESPECIALLY AFTER COVID WITH LIKE THE AVAILABILITY OF ONLINE RESOURCES AND ONLINE LIKE ACCESSING YOUR MATERIAL ONLINE.
THAT'S THAT WOULD HURT MORE THAN BENEFIT, YOU KNOW, LIKE PENALIZING THAT LACK OF ATTENDANCE.
I MOVE THAT THE BOARD APPROVE THE REVISIONS TO POLICY 2420 GRADING AND PROGRESS REPORTS.
ALL RIGHT. WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR POLICY 2420.
I'D LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5 TO 0.
ITEM C APPROVAL TO BID THE CENTRAL OPERATIONS BUILDING PROJECT.
BOARD. NICE TO SPEAK TO YOU AGAIN.
THAT'S BEEN A LONG TIME IN THE RUNNING, IN THE WORKS.
PREVIOUSLY, THE BOARD APPROVED THE ENGINEERING FOR THIS BUILDING IS ABOUT A $300,000 CONTRACT.
A WHILE BACK, WE'VE ACCELERATED OUR DESIGN, AND WE'RE READY TO GO OUT FOR BID.
IT'S A LITTLE MORE THAN 23,000 SQUARE FOOT.
CURRENTLY BEING HOUSED IN A RENOVATED BUS BARN.
THE WAREHOUSE WILL ALSO GO FROM THERE.
CAPACITY WILL GO FROM 10,000FT TO 15,000FT, 50% INCREASE.
YEAH. THE BUS BARN IS CURRENTLY 92 YEARS OLD, AND IT IS DEFINITELY SERVED ITS USEFUL LIFE.
I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL IN MANY OF THOSE CLASSES, LEARNED WELDING AND ELECTRICAL.
WHICH, IRONICALLY, ALSO SERVED AS OUR MAINTENANCE FACILITY FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS.
SO, I GO BACK AND THEN I GOT TO BURN IT IN 2012.
SO THAT GOES BEHIND THE NAME OF THE CENTRAL OPERATIONS BUILDING.
SO, MOST OF MY PROJECTS ARE UNDER 350,000, WHICH IS SMALL WORKS, AND I DON'T HAVE TO ADVERTISE.
WE STARTED ABOUT FIVE AND THEN IT WENT TO SIX AND NOW I'M PUSHING EIGHT.
BUT IT'S STILL AROUND $300 A SQUARE FOOT VERSUS, YOU KNOW, THE CONSTRUCTION FOR A SCHOOL, WHICH WOULD BE MORE LIKE 600, OBVIOUSLY, MUCH LESS CARPET SHEETROCK LESS.
SO, WE'RE LOOKING TO I'M LOOKING TO GET PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE THIS.
IF THE BOARD APPROVES, I'LL BE ADVERTISING TOMORROW.
AND THE ONE WEEK AFTER THAT, WE WILL BE BIDDING ON JUNE 11TH, AND I WILL BRING THE CONTRACT TO THE BOARD, HOPEFULLY ON JUNE 24TH TO APPROVE THIS.
KEVIN, WHERE'S THE NEW BUILDING LOCATED? RIGHT ACROSS FROM WHERE THE WAREHOUSE IS.
THE EXISTING WAREHOUSE JUST NORTH OF THE BATTLE GROUND PARKING LOT.
[01:30:04]
THAT GREEN FIELD THERE.OKAY. THAT'S WHERE THE OLD CENTRAL BUILDING WAS.
THAT'S THE FIELD WITH THAT LITTLE TRACK IN IT.
YEAH, THAT WAS THAT WAS A PRESCHOOL TRACK FROM WAY BACK WHEN.
NO. OKAY. NO ISSUE THAT THAT'S A COUPLE 300FT MORE NORTH.
WHAT WAS THE PLAN FOR THE EXISTING BUILDING AFTERWARDS? WAS THAT GOING TO BE TURNED OVER TO THE SCHOOL OR SOMETHING DIFFERENT OR.
WE MAY USE IT FOR TEMPORARY STORAGE.
WE'RE REALLY WORKING ON GETTING RID OF OUR SURPLUS MATERIAL IN THE DISTRICT, GETTING RID OF OLD CHAIRS, TABLES, THINGS LIKE THAT, WHICH HAVE BEEN HOUSED A LOT IN THE B BUILDING HERE.
SO HAVE NOT REALLY DETERMINED THE THE WHETHER OR NOT THE DISTRICT WANTS TO LOOK AT SELLING THAT PIECE, LOOKING AT EXPANDING AND MAYBE SOLVING SOME OF BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL'S STUDENT PICKUP ISSUES.
SO, NO REAL NO REAL PLAN FOR IT.
BUT THAT BUILDING NEEDS TO COME DOWN.
YEAH. AND THE PORTABLES THAT ARE NEXT TO IT, THAT'S LIKE WHERE? YOUR OFFICE. THAT'S MY OFFICE.
TRANSPORTATION IS STILL HOUSED IN THERE AS WELL.
SO, YEAH, I'VE GOT A YEAR TO THINK ABOUT IT.
I MOVE THE BOARD, APPROVE THE BIDDING OF THE CENTRAL OPERATIONS BUILDING PROJECT.
THE MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR THE CENTRAL REGIONS BUILDING PROJECT.
I'D LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5 TO 0.
I THINK YOU MISSED ONE. YOU MISSED ONE.
ALL RIGHT, I'M TELLING YOU, I'M JUST TRYING TO GET DONE HERE.
ALL OF US. LIKE WHAT? OKAY, HOW ABOUT WE GO BACK TO ITEM D, THE FIRST READING OF HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE CURRICULUM? LOOK AT THE MONEY I COULD HAVE SAVED.
YES. SO, AS WE ARE HERE FOR THE FIRST READING OF HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE CURRICULUM, AND YEAH, THIS IS, I THINK, THE FIFTH TIME THAT WE'VE BEEN IN FRONT OF YOU THIS YEAR. AND I ONLY SAY THAT BECAUSE IN THE PREVIOUS FOUR, WE'VE SPENT A FAIR AMOUNT OF TIME TALKING TO YOU ABOUT THE PROCESS THAT WE'VE GONE THROUGH.
WE JUST WANT TO SAY THAT THE PROCESS FOR THIS YOU KNOW, RECOMMENDATION IS EXACTLY THE SAME.
SO UNLESS YOU HAVE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT, WE'LL PROBABLY, YOU KNOW, KEEP THAT TO A MINIMUM.
SO JUST MAKE SURE YOU KIND OF KNOW WHO'S HERE.
SO, ALLISON AND I WILL DO MOST OF THE PRESENTATION.
ANDREA SMITH IS HERE FROM AS THE SCIENCE TOSA.
AMY, I DON'T THINK AMY'S ACTUALLY HERE, BUT YOU'VE MET HER BEFORE.
PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL, EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE TEACHER FOR THE GENERAL SCIENCE EDUCATION COURSES.
AND THEN WE HAVE CINDY ARNOLD WHO'S A DIRECTOR OF CTE, AND THEN ANNETTE MELTON, WHO'S A PLANT SCIENCE TEACHER AT. CORRECT.
THOSE ARE FROM THE GENERAL SCIENCE COURSES.
AND THEN HORTICULTURE IS FROM CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
OKAY. YOU CAN SEE ON THE NEXT SLIDE THAT WE HAD AN EXTENSIVE COMMITTEE.
WE HAVE QUITE A FEW SCIENCE COURSES.
AND SO, IN ORDER TO COVER ALL THE DIFFERENT SCIENCE COURSES, WE HAD QUITE A FEW PEOPLE.
WE HAD THE PEOPLE THAT ARE IN WHITE ARE THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS.
AND THEN WE HAD PILOT BUDDIES.
SO, WE HAD A SECOND PERSON THAT WAS ABLE TO PILOT THE PROGRAM WITH THE PERSON WHO'S ON THE COMMITTEE TO GET MORE OF A PERSPECTIVE OF WHETHER OR NOT THAT TEXT WAS GOING TO BE A GREAT FIT FOR THE FOR THE CLASS.
THIS IS THE CORE BELIEF STATEMENT.
IT IS THE EXACT SAME ONE YOU SAW FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PRESENTATION.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO FORWARD THROUGH THAT OKAY.
SO, WE WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND FOR THE PURCHASE AND ADOPTION OF THE FOLLOWING TEXTBOOKS.
[01:35:06]
SO, WE HAVE CHEMISTRY.WE WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND THE WORLD OF CHEMISTRY WHICH IS A NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TEXTBOOK.
WE HAVE EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE WHICH IS ALSO A NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TEXTBOOKS TEXTBOOK.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE IS A SAVVAS TEXT.
IT'S CALLED YOUR WORLD YOUR TURN.
AND THEN FOR HORTICULTURE WE HAVE THE HORTICULTURE TODAY WHICH IS GOODHEART WILLCOX.
I DO WANT TO TAKE JUST A SECOND TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS ONE.
AND SO, IT WENT THROUGH A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT PROCESS.
IT WENT THROUGH CINDY ARNOLD'S ADVISORY GROUP.
SO, THEY HAVE THEIR OWN ADOPTION PROCESS THAT THEY DO IN CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
BUT THEY DO HAVE THAT GO IN FRONT OF THEIR ADVISORY BOARD.
IT WAS ACCEPTED AND APPROVED BY THE PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL AG PROGRAM.
IT HAS A DIGITAL PLATFORM JUST LIKE OUR OTHER TEXTBOOKS.
IT IS ALIGNED WITH THE INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED CREDENTIAL EXAMS, AND IT IS ALIGNED WITH THE HORTICULTURE AND PLANT SCIENCE FRAMEWORKS THAT THEY DO THROUGH CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION. AND THEN IT HAS CONNECTIONS TO THE WORK-BASED LEARNING, TO FFA COMPETITIONS, TO CAREER OPPORTUNITIES, AND HAS HIGH SAFETY STANDARDS AS WELL.
SO, THERE IS A LIST OF THE DIFFERENT PUBLICATIONS OF THAT RE REVIEW PROCESS.
WE ACTUALLY HAD THREE RESPONSES TOTAL AND THAT REVIEWED ALL OF THEM.
NONE OF THOSE RESPONSES HAD ANY COMMENTS.
USUALLY, WE'LL FORWARD THE COMMENTS TO YOU, BUT THERE WERE NONE REALLY TO FORWARD ALL OF THE THREE.
THERE WERE THERE WAS NONE THAT THAT ACTUALLY RESPONDED TO DISAGREE OR STRONGLY DISAGREE.
SO, WE DID WANT TO COMMENT ON BUDGET AND MONEY FOR THAT.
SO, VERY PARTS THAT ARE IN COLOR IN YOUR HIGHLIGHT THE MAJOR ASPECTS OF THE PROCESS. SO, IN YELLOW THESE COSTS HERE ARE THE COSTS FOR THE CURRICULUM MATERIALS AND THE DIGITAL SO.
YEAH. SO, HERE IN YELLOW ARE THE ACTUAL COST OF THE MATERIALS.
THAT'S BOTH THE PRINT AND DIGITAL.
SORRY. WE'RE JUST TRYING TO SHOW. OKAY.
AND SO. ALL RIGHT, SO THEN THESE ARE THE COURSES.
YOU'LL NOTICE THEY'RE VARIABLE.
AND SO, MOST OF THAT IS REFLECTED ON JUST THE STUDENT COUNTS.
THEN WE ALSO HAVE PD COSTS AND THEN SO THEN THAT ADDS TO THE TOTAL COST FOR THE COURSE.
THESE ARE THAT'S THE COST BASICALLY FOR THAT'S ASSOCIATED WITH THE MATERIALS PLUS THE TRAINING OF THE TEACHERS OR AT LEAST THE INITIAL TRAINING.
AND THEN THERE'S THE OTHER ASSOCIATED COSTS.
AND YOU NOTICE THAT THOSE ARE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER.
AND THE MAIN REASON IS THAT THOSE OTHER ASSOCIATED COSTS INCLUDE A LOTS OF SCIENCE EQUIPMENT, MICROSCOPES THINGS FOR LABS SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS CALLED GIZMOS.
IT'S LIKE A VIRTUAL LAB SIMULATIONS AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
SO, IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE SCIENCE HAS HAD AN UPDATED CURRICULUM.
AND WITH THAT GOES THE EQUIPMENT THAT.
SO, YOU CAN SEE THAT THAT'S ACTUALLY A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE COST.
SO, ALL TOLD, IT'S ABOUT $460,000 FOR THOSE COURSES.
AND THEN ON THE LINE DOWN THE BOTTOM IS THE COST FOR THE CTE BOOKS, THE BOOK FOR THE HORTICULTURE.
[01:40:07]
PART OF THE GENERAL ADOPTION THAT WE'VE BEEN OVERSEEING.THERE'S A, I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY THIS IS JUST A FEW OF THE SCIENCE COURSES THAT WE OFFER.
IS THERE WERE THESE ON A SCHEDULE TO, I FORGET, WERE THESE ON A SCHEDULE TO UPDATE THE CURRICULUM? AND THERE'S OTHER CLASSES DOWN THE ROAD THAT ARE COMING, RIGHT? YES, THERE ARE OTHER COURSES.
BUT IF WHAT THEY'RE LOOKING AT IS THE SAME COMPANY AND JUST AN UPDATE OF THE CURRENT COURSE, SO IT WOULDN'T NEED TO GO THROUGH A BOARD APPROVAL PROCESS IF WE ENDED UP WITH THAT ONE.
OKAY. SCIENCE HAS CLEARLY BEEN OUR MOST COMPLEX ADOPTION BECAUSE OF THAT.
BECAUSE IF HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE.
BUT YOU ACTUALLY HAVE A LOT OF INDIVIDUAL COURSES THAT THAT YOU'RE MAKING INDEPENDENT SELECTIONS FOR AS COMPARED TO, SAY, THE MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE, WHICH IS THIS ONE BASIC SCIENCE CURRICULUM FOR ALL GRADE LEVELS.
WELL, AND VERY COMPLEX GO AHEAD.
I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY AND PERSONALLY I'M APPRECIATIVE OF OUR STAFF DOING, SHE'S DOING A DILIGENT JOB DETERMINING IF THERE'S ANYTHING NEW NEEDED OR NOT.
IF IT REALLY JUST LOOKS LIKE A NEWER VERSION OF THE SAME MATERIALS.
AND SO, I APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT OUR STAFF IS BEING DILIGENT ABOUT THAT AND MAKING DECISIONS BASED ON WHETHER THERE'S IT'S UPGRADED TO MEET THE NEW NATIONAL THE NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS.
WHAT THE MATERIALS AND STUFF THAT YOU'RE BUYING ALONGSIDE THE TEXTBOOKS.
WILL THOSE LAST LONGER THAN THE CURRICULUM ITSELF, OR ARE THEY LIKE, SUPER TIGHT IN ANDREA, DO YOU WANT TO ANSWER? THERE'S A LOT OF NONSENSE.
YEAH. SO, THE NON-CONSUMABLES INCLUDE MICROSCOPES HOT PLATES, MATERIALS LIKE THAT THAT WILL BE AROUND INDEFINITELY UNLESS THEY GET DROPPED.
GOOD QUESTION. OTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD.
[INAUDIBLE]. DO THE TEACHERS FEEL LIKE THESE? THIS. THESE CURRICULUMS WILL BE WHAT THE STUDENTS NEED, AND THEY'LL BENEFIT HIGHLY FROM THAT.
WE'RE TRYING TO BE REALLY, REALLY PICKY AND REALLY CAREFUL ABOUT CHOOSING SOMETHING THAT WE ACTUALLY WANT TO USE, AND THAT WILL ACTUALLY GET THE STUDENTS SOMEWHAT INTERESTED IN THE STUFF WE'RE TEACHING, BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT OF STUFF THAT'S THE SAME OLD TEXTBOOK, JUST A FANCIER COVER ON IT.
SO YEAH, DEFINITELY LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO MEET STUDENTS' NEEDS.
THANK YOU. YEAH. WELL THANK YOU.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I THINK BACK TO IS WHEN WE ADOPTED THE CURRENT EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE TEXTBOOK IN 2006, AND WE ADOPTED THE BOOK IN THE SUMMER OR IN THE SPRING.
AND BEFORE WE HIT CHRISTMAS, PLUTO WAS DOWNGRADED FROM BEING A PLANET TO BEING WHATEVER IT IS NOW.
THOSE TEXTBOOKS HAVEN'T BEEN CORRECT SINCE WE BOUGHT THEM.
SO, THERE'S THINGS THAT ACTUALLY DO CHANGE IN SCIENCE, AND I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE ARE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH THOSE NEW IN THE NEW INFORMATION, BUT ALSO BE ABLE TO SHOW STUDENTS WHAT POSSIBILITIES ARE.
THERE'RE CAREERS OUT THERE THAT WE NEVER IMAGINED WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO ANYONE AND BEING ABLE TO HAVE THAT INCLUDED WITH WHAT WE'RE TEACHING, I THINK, IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO SHOW STUDENTS WHAT SOME OF THOSE POSSIBILITIES ARE, AND OPTIONS FOR THEIR FUTURE ARE.
THANK YOU. I LIKE THAT THESE QUESTIONS.
I ALSO WANT TO MAKE A COMMENT ABOUT TEACHER FEEDBACK.
SO, ONE OF MY SCIENCE TEACHERS ACTUALLY DID WAS PART OF THE PROCESS.
[01:45:05]
WHEN WE WERE DOING A LAB. I GOT DONE WITH THE LAB EARLY, AND I WAS ACTUALLY ABOUT TO LEAVE THE CLASS EARLY.LONG STORY. BUT I WAS LIKE, I JUST KIND OF ASKED HER IN PASSING.
I WAS LIKE, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THESE TEXTBOOKS? AND SHE JUST LOOKED AT ME AND SHE'S LIKE, I LOVE THEM.
AND SHE WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT THE BIOLOGY TEXTBOOKS ARE SO OLD THAT WHEN I TOOK BIOLOGY IN MY FRESHMAN YEAR, SHE WOULD ACTUALLY TEACH FROM THE TEXTBOOK AND SAY, HEY, SO HERE'S THIS PART THAT'S ACTUALLY NOT TRUE ANYMORE.
AND THERE'S UPDATED INFORMATION, BUT I STILL HAVE TO TEACH FROM THE TEXTBOOK.
SO, I'M GOING TO SAY I'M JUST LETTING YOU KNOW THAT THIS ISN'T TRUE.
WE'RE GOING TO AND THEN SHE WOULD LIKE, DO A DIFFERENT LESSON.
AND LIKE ONE OF THE MAIN THINGS SHE HIGHLIGHTED WAS REALLY LIKE HOW SCIENCE IS CHANGING ALL THE TIME, MORE THAN ANY OTHER COURSE OR SUBJECTS LIKE EVER, BASICALLY. AND SHE WAS JUST SO EXCITED ABOUT HOW THE TEXTBOOKS WERE ACCURATE AND SOMETHING SHE COULD ACTUALLY TEACH FROM.
OKAY, WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE CURRICULUM.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR BOARD REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5 TO 0.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMENT.
THIS WAS PROBABLY. IT'S PROBABLY IT.
NO. DON'T TALK. ALL RIGHT, NOW WE'RE READY FOR RESOLUTION C.24.
HOW DO I FOLLOW THAT ONE? RESOLUTION C 24.
SIMILAR TO THE LAST TWO SCHOOL YEARS, WE'RE REQUESTING TO REPLACE TWO OF OUR EXISTING LATE START WEDNESDAYS WITH FULL RELEASE DAYS FOR TWO THINGS ONE FOR COLLABORATIVE TEACHER TEAMS TO UNPACK THEIR ESSENTIAL STANDARD AND DO SOME OF THE PLC WORK THAT WE'VE BEEN DISCUSSING AROUND THE PLC CYCLES, AND TWO ALSO PROVIDES OUR PARAEDUCATORS TIME TO COMPLETE SOME OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PARAEDUCATOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM.
PLEASE NOTE THAT IN ADDITION TO THE TWO WAIVER DAYS THAT WE'RE ASKING FOR ON OCTOBER 30TH AND JANUARY 29TH, WE ARE ALSO ASKING FOR A TWO HOUR LATE START ON APRIL 9TH TO BEGIN SHIFTING TO A MODEL NEXT YEAR FOR THE 24-25 SCHOOL YEAR IN WHICH WE WOULD ACTUALLY, SORRY FOR THE 25-26 SCHOOL YEAR IN WHICH WE WOULD DO LATE STARTS INSTEAD OF WAIVER DAYS.
SO, CALENDARS UP THERE, YOU CAN SEE.
SO, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS WITH REGARDS TO THIS RESOLUTION THAT WE WOULD THEN PASS ON TO OSPI? WELL, I WAS A TEACHER FOR A VERY LONG TIME, AND PLANNING AND GETTING TOGETHER WITH OTHER TEACHERS IS INVALUABLE.
SO, I THINK IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT THEY HAVE WHAT THEY NEED IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL, AND WE NEED TO SUPPORT THEM AS MUCH AS WE POSSIBLY CAN. YEAH.
THIS WORK TAKES TIME FOR THEM TO BE INTENTIONAL AND TO DO, DO THINGS IN A DIFFERENT WAY.
AND SO, PROVIDING THEM THIS TIME HAS BEEN JUST INCREDIBLY IMPACTFUL AND NECESSARY FOR THEM.
DOES I KNOW WE'VE DONE THIS BEFORE AND IT'S GREAT, I AGREE I JUST WONDER, IS IT AND THIS MAY JUST BE A MAYBE IT'S UNIMPORTANT, BUT I WAS JUST CURIOUS IF THERE'S ANY IMPACT WHEN WE GO TO LIKE SUBMIT FOR WAIVER DAYS ON SNOW DAYS TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR, DOES THE STATE EVER TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION? WELL, WE'VE ALREADY GIVEN YOU WAIVER DAYS ON THIS.
YEAH. FOR INSTANCE, THIS YEAR.
WE HAD ENOUGH MINUTES, INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES TO BE ABLE TO REQUEST THE WAIVER DAY.
BUT IF WE HAD HAD MORE THAN ONE MORE DAY TO REQUEST, WE WOULD HAVE RUN.
IT DIDN'T AFFECT INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES, BUT IT COULD HAVE IF WE COULD HAVE IF WE HAD ANOTHER DAY.
WE JUST HAVE TO BE MINDFUL ABOUT THE BALANCE BETWEEN THE TWO.
[01:50:02]
MINUTES, AND THEY'LL WAIVE THE SCHOOL DAYS, BUT THEY WILL NOT WAIVE THE INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES.AND WE HAD THESE TWO DAYS, WE STILL HAD AN ADDITIONAL EIGHT HOURS.
I THINK WE HAD EIGHT HOURS LEFT OR 8.5 HOURS LEFT.
THAT THAT WAS IT. THAT WAS IT.
IT WAS CLOSE. SO YES, IT DOES.
AND THAT'S WHY WE RECOGNIZE TO DAVID'S POINT THAT WE CAN'T CONTINUE THIS FOREVER.
AND WE WOULD LIKE TO PHASE IT OUT BECAUSE WE WANT BACK THE FLEXIBILITY.
RIGHT. I THINK THIS IS WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT THE LAST MEETING.
YEAH. SO, I'M NOT SAYING THAT'S A REASON TO SAY NO TO IT.
I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY, BUT IT DOES.
WE GOT TWO WEEKS OF SNOW INSTEAD OF ONE WEEK OF SNOW.
BUT SINCE SORA IS LEAVING AND DON'T WORRY, WE WON'T.
WIZARD SPELLS OR WHATEVER SHE DOES ABOUT BRINGING SNOW TO US, WE'LL BE SAFE NEXT TO YOU.
YEAH. ANY OTHER ANY OTHER QUESTIONS WITH REGARDS TO THIS RESOLUTION? I MOVE THAT RESOLUTION C 24, REQUESTING A WAIVER OF THE 180-DAY SCHOOL REQUIREMENT FOR THE 20 2425 SCHOOL YEAR BE PASSED.
GREAT. WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR TO APPROVE THE SUBMITTAL OF THE 180-DAY WAIVER.
I LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5 TO 0.
NEXT, WE HAVE ITEM F, THE REVISION OF POLICY 2002 004 ACCOUNTABILITY GOALS.
SO, WSSDA HAS RECOMMENDED A REVISION OF POLICY 2004.
THEY'VE ACTUALLY ENCOURAGED THIS.
AND REALLY, THE TWO MAIN THINGS THAT I WANTED TO BRING YOUR ATTENTION TO WITH REGARDS TO THIS POLICY, ONE IS THE TITLE OF THE POLICY WAS RECOMMENDING THAT THAT POLICY CHANGE FROM THE OLD LANGUAGE OF ACCOUNTABILITY GOALS, WHICH HARKENS BACK TO THE DAYS OF NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND AND THEN CHANGE IT TO PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT GOALS.
AND THAT REALLY CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF THIS PARTICULAR POLICY.
AND I WANT TO BE VERY CLEAR THAT THIS POLICY REVISION ALSO INCLUDES CHANGING LANGUAGE FROM ESEA OR THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT, OR AKA NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND TO A MORE GENERAL TERM OF FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS.
AND JUST TO PROVIDE A LITTLE CONTEXT ON THAT FRAMEWORK, BACK IN 2018, OSPI AND THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION PARTNERED TO RELEASE THE WASHINGTON SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT FRAMEWORK.
AND THAT FRAMEWORK WAS AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT TO OUR STATE'S SCHOOL SUCCESS PLAN THAT WAS APPROVED BY THE US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IN JANUARY OF 2018. IT IS A FEDERAL REQUIREMENT FOR OUR STATE TO HAVE A SCHOOL SUCCESS PLAN IN ORDER TO RECEIVE ESSENTIAL TITLE ONE FUNDING THAT SUPPORTS OUR STRUGGLING STUDENTS.
AND THE OTHER THING I JUST WANT TO MENTION REAL QUICK, NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.
SO THE OLD LANGUAGE OF ESEA, THOSE UNDER THAT PREVIOUS LAW SCHOOLS THAT WERE IDENTIFIED FOR SUPPORT WERE REQUIRED TO IMPLEMENT SPECIFIC FEDERALLY MANDATED PROVISIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT, AND IT WAS SOLELY BASED ON STATE TESTING.
THE DIFFERENCE WITH OUR NEW MODEL IS THAT THE POWER HAS BEEN PUT BACK INTO THE LOCAL CONTROL AND THE COMMUNITY AS FAR AS BUILDING THIS PLAN. SO, THE WASHINGTON SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT FRAMEWORK PUTS THE DECISION-MAKING POWER BACK TO OUR DISTRICT SCHOOLS, PARTNER WITH OSPI TO DEVELOP PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE STUDENT PERFORMANCE THAT WILL WORK BEST FOR THEIR LOCAL SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES.
IT ENCOMPASSES ENCOMPASSES STUDENT ATTENDANCE NINTH GRADE ON TRACK AND DUAL CREDIT AS WELL.
SO, THERE ARE SOME OTHER PROVISIONS TO THIS PARTICULAR POLICY.
ANY ANY QUESTIONS WITH REGARDS TO POLICY? 2004 I THINK AND I IF I'M HEARING YOU RIGHT, WHAT YOU'RE SAYING IS THE THE VERBIAGE OF FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS IS REFERRING TO OUR OUR PLAN.
[01:55:02]
CORRECT. THE PLAN THAT WE BUILD.IT IS OUR PLAN THAT HAS A FRAMEWORK FROM THE STATE.
THE LAWS, THE FEDERAL LAWS CHANGE OVER TIME.
YEAH, BUT BOTTOM-LINE NEW RULES.
RIGHT. THE DEPARTMENT BUT BOTTOM LINE, THE DEPARTMENT OF ED SAYS YOU MUST HAVE A PLAN.
AND THEY CHARGE THE STATE WITH BUILDING THE FRAMEWORK FOR THAT.
AND THEN THE STATE CHARGES US WITH COMING UP WITH THE PLAN.
AND PRIOR TO THIS PLAN BEING IN PLACE, THE IMPLEMENTATION WAS FAIRLY RIGID.
WITH NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND, WE DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF WIGGLE ROOM.
AND WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT, YOU'VE HEARD IN THIS MEETING, TALKING ABOUT UNFUNDED MANDATES.
NOW, THIS IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS WHERE ACTUALLY WE.
THE MANY OF THE POSITIONS THAT KEVIN WAS HIGHLIGHTING WERE A RESULT OF THIS GRANT.
SO, IT'S BEEN A VERY BIG POSITIVE FOR US AND LESS OF A PUNITIVE PIECE THAT WE FOUND JUST DIDN'T WORK IN, IN NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.
YEP. FOR THE SAKE OF THE BOARD, I CALLED DAVID ABOUT THIS.
EXCELLENT. I DID SOME HOMEWORK SINCE WE LAST TALKED, SO THAT WAS REALLY GOOD.
WHAT YOU SAID. YEAH. I WAS CONCERNED.
I SPENT A LOT OF TIME MOVING AROUND IN CIRCLES.
YOU KNOW, I HAVE A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING WHY PEOPLE ARE SO UNHAPPY WITH FUNDING OF SCHOOLS AND ALL. YEAH, I GET IT.
I KNOW DIFFERENTLY, BUT THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE THINKING.
AND SO, THEY DON'T WANT TO VOTE FOR A BOND.
THEY DON'T WANT TO VOTE FOR A LEVY.
AND I'M SITTING IN A MEETING WITH A GROUP OF PEOPLE AND THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT FEDERAL SCHOOLS, OKAY.
AND I'M TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT.
FEDERAL SCHOOLS, YOU KNOW, THESE ARE FEDERAL SCHOOLS, YOU KNOW.
AND I TOLD THEM THESE ARE NOT FEDERAL SCHOOLS.
THESE ARE OUR COMMUNITY SCHOOLS.
PARENTS ARE THE MAJOR SHAREHOLDERS.
IT'S ALL ABOUT OUR KIDS AND OUR COMMUNITY AND DOING WHAT'S GOOD FOR THEM.
OKAY. I THINK THE PROBLEM THAT WE'RE HAVING WITH PEOPLE LIKE TAKING THEIR KIDS OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS FOR HOMESCHOOLING OR SOME OTHER KIND OF PROGRAM THAT RIVER HOMELINK AND THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING ARE SO POWERFULLY SUCCESSFUL IS A MESSAGING ISSUE.
AND I'VE TALKED WITH DENNY ABOUT THIS MANY TIMES.
I THINK WE'VE GOT SOME MESSAGING ISSUES.
OKAY. AND THE REASON I CALLED DAVID WAS BECAUSE IN THIS FEDERAL REQUIREMENT, YOU KNOW, I COULD SEE WHERE MAYBE PARENTS MIGHT THINK THESE ARE FEDERAL SCHOOLS.
OKAY. SO, I TAKE VERY SERIOUSLY THESE POLICIES THAT GET PUSHED DOWN FROM WSSDA WITHOUT A LOT OF THOUGHT. YOU KNOW, THEY WRITE A POLICY, THEY PUT THIS OUT.
THIS IS TO GET US IN COMPLIANCE.
HERE YOU GO. AND I WONDER IF THEY COULD HAVE EASILY WRITTEN IT DIFFERENTLY SO THAT IT DIDN'T GIVE THAT IMPRESSION THAT THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS CONTROLLING US, SAY, BECAUSE THAT'S HOW YOU COULD READ THIS.
SO I THINK WE NEED TO I FEEL IT VERY IMPORTANT WHEN I TALK TO FOLKS.
I TAKE VERY SERIOUSLY THE POLICIES THAT WE WRITE, THE POLICIES THAT WE PUT INTO PLACE AND, AND THAT WE TRY TO DO THE BEST FOR OUR KIDS IN EVERYTHING THAT WE DO.
EVEN THOUGH LITTLE VERBIAGE LIKE THAT MAY BE INCIDENTAL, IT CAN OFTEN BE MISUNDERSTOOD.
SO, I CALLED HIM. I TALKED WITH HIM.
[02:00:01]
I DON'T HAVE ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION IF ANYBODY ELSE DOES.I'D LIKE TO MAKE A MOTION THAT WE PASS THE.
THAT REVISION OF POLICY 2004 ACCOUNTABILITY GOALS BE APPROVED.
DID YOU SOMEHOW KNOW? OKAY WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR TO APPROVE THE CHANGES TO POLICY.
2004 PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT GOALS.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTES.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE.
I WOULD ASK FOR A VOTE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5 TO 0.
BOARD. NEXT UP, WE HAVE RETIRED POLICY 2090 PROGRAM EVALUATION SHELLY WHITTEN.
THIS POLICY I AM RECOMMENDING THAT WE RETIRE IT ESSENTIALLY READS LIKE A JOB DESCRIPTION FOR OUR CIA DIRECTORS, AND IT HAS BECOME AN UNNECESSARY POLICY FOR US.
HOWEVER, MANY OF THE THINGS THAT ARE INCLUDED IN IT ARE THINGS THAT WE DO.
SO, THERE'S NO REAL CHANGES IN OUR PRACTICE.
IT'S JUST AN UNNECESSARY POLICY.
AND LIKE OUR ATTORNEY LIKES TO TELL US, YOU NEVER GET IN TROUBLE FOR THE POLICY YOU DON'T HAVE.
YOU GET IN TROUBLE FOR THE ONE YOU DON'T FOLLOW.
AND SHE JUST SAID YOU NEED TO START WEANING OFF SOME OF THESE POLICIES THAT ARE UNNECESSARY.
AND SO, THIS IS A WEANING OF UNNECESSARY POLICY.
AND SHE AGREED THAT IT SHOULD BE.
YES, SHE DEFINITELY SAID GET RID OF IT.
EXCELLENT. SO, QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD.
NO? I MOVED THE BOARD, APPROVED THE RETIREMENT OF POLICY 2090 PROGRAM EVALUATION.
OKAY. WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR POLICY 2090.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5 TO 0.
BOARD. NEXT UP, WE HAVE THE APPROVAL OF PURCHASE FOR CHROMEBOOKS.
GOOD EVENING. THE ITEM IN FRONT OF YOU IS FOR THE PURCHASE OF CHROMEBOOKS.
THIS IS OUR ANNUAL PURCHASE YOUR FAVORITE TO HERE, BECAUSE IT'S VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD.
WE'RE BUYING 1500 UNITS AT THIS POINT.
TO REPLACE 1 TO 1 COMPUTERS FOR OR TO PROVIDE 1 TO 1 COMPUTERS FOR INCOMING SIXTH GRADERS AND THEN TO REPLACE CHROMEBOOKS AND CARTS FOR A MODEL THAT IS NOW OBSOLETE.
ANY QUESTIONS? I HAVE A QUESTION.
IS THAT JUST BECAUSE OF LIKE SOMETIMES THE DELL ONES ARE CHEAPER AND SOMETIMES THE HP ONES ARE CHEAPER? OR IS THERE LIKE A RHYME AND REASON? WE WE WERE BUYING.
WE'VE GONE THROUGH A FEW DIFFERENT MODELS OF CHROMEBOOKS OVER THE YEARS.
FOR THE MOST PART, WE'VE USED DELL.
IT'S VERY GOOD. WE'RE VERY GOOD AT REPAIRING IT AND SERVICING IT IN GOOD COMPANY.
WE DID USE HP FOR A FEW YEARS.
AND THOSE ARE, WELL, OBSOLETE.
AND THEN YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED SOME BRAND-NEW HP G9'S, WHICH IS WHAT THEY ARE.
AND THE REASON THAT WE HAD THAT IS WE RECEIVED SOME SPECIAL FEDERAL FUNDING, AND THE ONLY MANUFACTURER THAT HAD A MODEL COME OUT THAT WAS OF THE MOST RECENT VINTAGE, SO THAT IT GOT THE FULL EIGHT YEARS OF ITS LIFE WAS FROM HP AT THE TIME.
AND SO THAT'S WHERE THAT COMES FROM.
WE'VE BEEN BUYING DELL SINCE THAT PURCHASE THOUGH.
SO YEAH, IT'S A GOOD QUESTION.
AND WITH THAT, YOU THINK THAT THESE NEW DELL CHROMEBOOKS WILL LAST EIGHT YEARS.
THEY'LL LAST LONGER THAN EIGHT YEARS.
SO, THOUGH THEY WOULD SUSTAIN LIKE A SIXTH GRADER THROUGH GRADUATION.
ACTUALLY, THAT MADE IT SOUND REALLY, YOU KNOW, KIND OF PRESUMPTUOUS.
MY ANSWER WASN'T MEANT THAT THESE ARE SO MUCH MORE AMAZING.
IT'S THAT CHROMEBOOKS IN GENERAL LAST WAY LONGER THAN YOU'D THINK.
IT'S, I'VE BEEN VERY SURPRISED OVER THE YEARS.
SO. YEAH, REALLY GOOD QUESTIONS.
YEAH, I CAN'T HELP BUT CHUCKLE WHEN I THINK ABOUT THE DURABILITY OF CHROMEBOOKS.
MY YEAH, WELL, YEAH, KEYS IS A BIG ONE FOR US.
[02:05:01]
I KNOW MY OWN CHILDREN.I HAD A LOT OF CONCERNS WHEN THEY GOT IPADS IN VANCOUVER.
YEAH, YEAH. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? YOU MUST START CALLING THIS ONE OLD LADY.
YOU DO HAVE A NEW ONE THAT WE ARE GETTING A NEW.
YOU ALL WILL BE GETTING NEW CHROMEBOOKS AFTER THIS MEETING TODAY.
NICE. WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS I DON'T KNOW, TERRY'S THE SPECIAL ONE.
YEAH, I MOVED THE BOARD, APPROVED THE PURCHASE OF 1500 DELL 3110 CHROMEBOOKS AND GOOGLE LICENSES FOR $424,957.23. ALL RIGHT.
WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR THE DELL CHROMEBOOKS AND GOOGLE LICENSES.
I WOULD LIKE TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
THE LAST ITEM ON NEW BUSINESS.
I DON'T THINK I SKIPPED ANY OTHERS APPROVAL OF PURCHASE FOR CROWDSTRIKE CYBERSECURITY SERVICES.
THANK YOU. CROWDSTRIKE IS A TYPE OF PRODUCT THAT YOU MAY LIKEN TO AN OLD, OLD STYLE ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM. WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD SUCH PROGRAMS IN THE DISTRICT, BUT THE TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED.
AND WE CURRENTLY USE A DIFFERENT PRODUCT, BUT WE'D LIKE TO SWITCH TO CROWDSTRIKE.
AN ANTIVIRUS DID IT WITH WHAT ARE CALLED SIGNATURES.
THEY'RE KIND OF LIKE A FINGERPRINT FOR KNOWN VIRUSES.
OKAY. NEXT GENERATION ANTIVIRUS AND ENDPOINT PROTECTION DOES MORE THAN THAT.
IT LOOKS FOR BEHAVIORAL FILES.
IT'S ACTUALLY WHAT THEY USE IN THE INDUSTRY.
SO CROWDSTRIKE IS OF THAT TYPE OF PRODUCT.
IT REPLACES EVERYTHING THAT WE'RE CURRENTLY USING OUR ONE PRODUCT FOR, BUT IT ALSO USES A ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING TO ADAPT AND LEARN HOW VIRUSES DO THE EXACT SAME THING ON YOUR NETWORK.
OH. AND IT HAS A REALLY NEAT NAME, RIGHT? ARE THERE OTHER THINGS THAT THIS DOES THAT WE DON'T UTILIZE FOR $206,000? NO, I THIS THIS IS THIS IS A VERY IT DOES THAT'S IT.
YEAH. IT ACTUALLY IS A LOT MORE THAN IT SOUNDS.
I THINK LIKE LIMITING ACCESS AND THAT KIND OF STUFF.
WHAT IT DOES IS ONCE IT IDENTIFIES, IT WILL QUARANTINE FILES, IT CAN QUARANTINE MACHINES.
IT DOES QUITE A BIT MORE THAN JUST BLOCK IT.
YES. IS THIS ONE YEAR? THAT'S THREE YEARS. THIS IS A THREE-YEAR COST.
AND THEN IS IT THE BEST OUT THERE? THE WELL, THERE'S ALWAYS AN ARGUMENT ABOUT WHAT'S THE BEST IN YOUR OPINION? IN MY OPINION, I DO BELIEVE SO.
IT IS USED BY THE VAST MAJORITY OF COMPANIES THAT MANAGE SERVICES LIKE THIS.
THEY CALL THEM SOC, SECURITY OPERATIONS CENTERS.
SOC COMPANIES TYPICALLY USE CROWDSTRIKE BECAUSE IT IS IT'S VERY QUICK.
OTHER PRODUCTS LIKE THIS CAN BE QUITE A BIT HEAVIER.
MORE OF A FOOTPRINT AND SLOWING THE MACHINE DOWN, IF YOU WILL, IN THE MARKETPLACE, ISN'T IT? IT IS. YEAH, IT IS THE MARKET LEADER.
PLUS, WE JUST SAW A RANSOMWARE ATTACK ON THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF, I BELIEVE.
DID YOU SEE THAT IN THE. YEAH.
YOU KNOW, AND THEY WERE, YOU KNOW, ASKING FOR MONEY TO RELEASE IT.
LOST MEDICAL FILES OF STUDENTS AND FAMILIES LOST.
DOES IT PROTECT FROM A BREACH? THEY DO PROVIDE BREACH PROTECTION IF WE PAY FOR THE MANAGED SERVICES.
[02:10:03]
AGAIN, BECAUSE MORE MANAGED SERVICES PROVIDERS ACTUALLY UTILIZE CROWDSTRIKE, THE EASE OF STEPPING IN AND ASSISTING US WITH ANY KIND OF CLEANUP WOULD BE FASTER.THANK YOU. I DO WANT TO BRING UP ONE DETAIL TO BE SURE THAT WE ARE THAT I HAVE IT ALL IN FRONT OF YOU.
THE CONTRACT, THE OR THE QUOTE THAT'S IN FRONT OF YOU REFERENCES THE INCORRECT PURCHASING CONTRACT.
WE ARE GOING TO GET THAT FIXED FOR THE SAME PRICE.
IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE OUR NEW REP QUOTED IT FOR BATTLE GROUND INDIANA SCHOOLS.
I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT'S VERY, VERY CLEAR.
WHERE IS THAT ADDRESS THAT I ONLY SAW THE WASHINGTON.
IF YOU LOOK UP AT THE IN THE TOP HEADER OF THE QUOTE ITSELF.
MIDWESTERN HIGHER EDUCATION COMPACT MASTER AGREEMENT.
YEAH. OH, SO THAT'LL BE ADJUSTED.
THAT'LL BE ADJUSTED EITHER NASPA OR TIPS.
BUT THE BUT THE MONEY IS THE PRICE AND THE EXACT PRODUCT WILL BE THE SAME.
CORRECT. I APOLOGIZE FOR MISSING THAT.
ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS? I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVED THE PURCHASE OF CROWDSTRIKE FOR THE CYPRESS SECURITY PROTECTION OF SERVERS AND WORKSTATIONS.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING? NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5 TO 0.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
ALL RIGHT. LAST, WE HAVE FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS.
[11. Future Agenda Items and Board Events]
WHEN I LOOK AT THE LINK TO THE CALENDAR TO THE ACTUAL GOOGLE DOC, I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW, IT TAKES ME TO THE 24-25 SCHOOL YEAR AND RIGHT TO THE ONLY THING WE HAVE ON THERE IS THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE AS ONE OF OUR GROUP GOALS, JUST TO REMINDER. OH, I KNOW HOW TO GET THERE.I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT THIS IS WHERE IT TOOK ME FIRST TO REMIND THE BOARD THAT AS ONE OF OUR BOARD GOALS, WE AGREED TO LEARN TOGETHER AND GET OUT THERE AND REPRESENT OUR DISTRICT.
AND, AND SO I JUST WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT INVITE IS OUT THERE FOR YOU TO SIGN UP FOR.
AND THAT ISN'T JUST LIMITED TO THE CONFERENCE.
WE ALSO TALKED ABOUT MEETING WITH OUR STATE REPRESENTATIVES AND GETTING OUT THERE WITH THEM AS WELL.
FANTASTIC. THAT WE'LL ALL TRAVEL UP TOGETHER.
THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING THAT WE SHOULD GO TO.
YEAH, THE DAY ON THE HILL WOULD BE GOOD FOR US.
IF WE WANT TO INCREASE OUR ADVOCACY AT THE STATE LEVEL.
OKAY. DID YOU SAY THAT THE INVITATION HAD ALREADY BEEN SENT OUT FOR THE CONFERENCE TO US? YEAH, I DID SEE THAT. YOU'VE ALREADY ACCEPTED IT.
THEN IT WAS BUT COMING UP SHORT AND SWEET, NOT NOVEMBER.
SO, WE HAVE OUR APPRENTICESHIP SIGNING THIS THURSDAY FROM 11 TO 1 HERE AT LOUISVILLE.
IF BOARD MEMBERS CAN GO TO THAT.
AND I BELIEVE THAT'S WHEN EVERYBODY CAN GO TO BECAUSE THERE'S NO MEETING.
SO, THE OTHER ONE ALSO COMING UP, WE HAVE A COUPLE OF BOARD TOURS ON FRIDAY AT CHIEF UMTUCH AND CAPTAIN STRONG FOR GROUP ONE AND TWO.
IN TWO WEEKS AND ONE DAY, BECAUSE MEMORIAL DAY FALLS ON MONDAY.
SO, WE WILL HAVE OUR MEETING ON TUESDAY NIGHT.
AND THAT STARTS AT 430, I BELIEVE.
WE WILL BE DOING OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE INTERVIEWS.
SO JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE FOR EVERY.
YEAH. 4:00 AND THEN OUR BOARD MEETING THAT NIGHT, AND THEN IT IS GRADUATION WEEKS.
SO, I'M SURE THERE'S MORE STUFF.
DENNY, YOU MENTIONED THE GRADUATION WALKS.
THE NEXT BOARD MEETING WILL BE.
[02:15:02]
THIS WAS A BIG, PACKED AGENDA.THE NEXT BOARD MEETING WILL ALSO BE A PACKED AGENDA.
WE WILL HAVE SOME RECOGNITIONS THAT WE WILL BE DOING.
WE'LL HAVE THE ATHLETES WHO HAVE SIGNED.
SO OVER 20 ATHLETES, SENIORS WILL BE HERE FOR THAT RECOGNITION.
WE'LL HAVE OUR TEACHER RECOGNITION.
WE'LL HAVE THE ART SHOW WILL BE PART OF THAT.
SO, IT'LL BE A IT'S PART OF THE REASON WHY WE PUT A LOT OF THE NEW BUSINESS ON THIS MEETING, BECAUSE WE KNEW WE WERE GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF AUXILIARY STUFF GOING ON AT THE NEXT MEETING, BUT IT'LL ALSO BE A FULL AGENDA.
SO, IT SHOULD BE A FUN MEETING THEN.
YOU KNOW, NOT A LOT OF BUSINESS, A LOT OF FUN.
WE'RE TRYING TO LIMIT AS MUCH BUSINESS AS WE CAN, BUT STUFF ALWAYS COMES UP AND PASS AND REVIEW.
OH, PASS AND REVIEW IS COMING.
THAT'S ALWAYS AN AMAZING EVENT TO GO TO.
SO, FIRST DAY IS SPRING PRACTICE IS MAY 28TH.
SO, ANYTHING ELSE THAT ANYBODY WANTS TO ADD THAT MAYBE I MISSED.
CRICKETS. SO, MEETING ADJOURNED 816.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, JACKIE.
