WE HAVE SOME STUDENTS HERE FROM PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY, IF YOU'D LIKE TO COME UP.>> PARENTS, IF YOU WANT TO COME UP TO TAKE PICTURES OR VIDEOS, PLEASE FEEL FREE.
>> YOU CAN COME ALL THE WAY UP TO THE STAGE. YOU'RE WELCOME.
>> THERE'S AN EMPTY SEAT UP THERE, IF YOU WANT.
I'M SERIOUS. YOU CAN COME UP FURTHER IF YOU WANT TO COME UP.
>> COME UP HERE WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEIR FACES.
>> HI. WE ARE PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY AND I AM SCOT, AND WE ARE GOING TO START OUR PLEDGE.
THE PLEASANT VALLEY GREEN TEAM IS MADE UP OF SECOND, THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS.
THIS YEAR, WE ARE GETTING OUR NEW SCHOOL GARDEN UP AND RUNNING AND WE HAVE ALSO BEEN CARING FOR WORMS. OUR FIRST PROJECT WAS TO PREPARE THE SOIL FOR SPRING PLANTING.
WE DID THIS BY PLANTING COVER CROPS OVER THE WINTER.
WE PLANTED WINTER WHEAT, CRIMSON, CLOVER AND COMMON VEG IN SOME BEDS.
OUR COVER CROPS DID VERY WELL.
[00:05:02]
IN OTHER BEDS, WE USED CARDBOARD AND LEAVES TO COVER THE SOIL.THEN WE MADE A SCARECROW TO HELP KEEP THE BIRDS AND SQUIRRELS OUT OF OUR GARDENS.
>> GOOD JOB, SCOT. SCOT YOU CAN STAY UP HERE.
YOU CAN'T LEAVE RIGHT AWAY. WE NEED YOU.
>> HI. I'M SYDNEY, AND I'M IN THIRD GRADE, AND THIS IS WHAT I HAVE TO SAY.
WE HAVE TWO BINS OF RED WIGGLERS.
WE HAVE LEARNED HOW TO CARE FOR OUR WORMS AND WHAT TO FEED THEM.
WE COVERED THEIR HOME WITH CARDBOARD TO KEEP THEM WARM AND HEALTHY.
DURING LUNCH, WE COLLECTED LEFTOVER VEGIES THAT WOULD HAVE GONE IN THE TRASH AND FED THEM TO OUR WORMS.
>> HI, I'M VIOLET, AND I'M IN SECOND GRADE.
TO PREPARE FOR PLANTING, WE CLEARED OUR COVERED CROPS OUT AND DISCOVERED OUR BULBS HAD STARTED COMING UP.
EACH OF OUR GARDEN BEDS HAS A THEME.
GARDEN THEMES INCLUDED TOPS AND BOTTOM GARDENS, COLOR GARDEN, POLLINATOR GARDEN, SALAD BOWL GARDEN, AND A HARD GARDEN.
>> SEED PACKETS WERE STORED TO MATCH THE GARDEN THEME, AND GROWING KIDS WERE PUT TOGETHER FOR EACH GARDEN BED.
RIGHT NOW, WE HAVE LOTUS FLOWERS GROWING AND WE ALREADY HAVE SOME SEEDS BROWNING.
>> GREEN TEAM ATTENDED CLARK COUNTY GREEN SCHOOL SUMMIT THIS MONTH.
WE ATTENDED WORKSHOPS ON DECOMPOSERS AND WATER.
WE PRESENTED TO THE SUMMIT TOO.
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO ENJOYING A BEAUTIFUL SCHOOL GARDEN.
>> I NOTICED YOUR POSTER UP HERE.
DID YOU TAKE THAT TO YOUR WORKSHOP THAT YOU WENT TO?
>> I THINK VIOLET LISTED ALL KINDS OF GARDENS, WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVORITE?
>> MY FAVORITE IS A SOLID BOWL GARDEN.
>> LETTUCE, HERBS, VEGETABLES.
FOODS THAT WOULD NORMALLY EAT.
WELL, LET'S SAYS I DOESN'T GIVE YOU NOTHING, LET'S SAY GETTING YOUR DOSE OF VITAMINS.
>> IT'S THE TYPE OF FOOD YOU'D USUALLY HAVE IN A SALAD IF YOU HAD ONE.
>> HAVE YOU GUYS HAD ANY CHANCES TO TRY ANY OF THE VEGETABLES OR?
>> CAN I COME OVER? I'M IN A BIG SALAD.
>> YOU GUYS WE TERRIFIC, BY THE WAY.
IT'S NOT EASY COMING UP HERE AND DOING THAT, SO CONGRATULATIONS. NICE JOB.
>> THANK YOU TO THE PARENTS FOR BRINGING THEM HERE.
WE REALLY WANTED TO HEAR THAT.
>> NEXT UP, WE HAVE PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL.
>> THAT'S A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW, JUST SO YOU KNOW.
[LAUGHTER] THANKS FOR BEING HERE.
>> THAT'S GOOD. WE ARE HERE TO REPRESENT PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL. I'M JAZZY.
>> I HAVE PAPERS. DON'T WORRY.
YES. I WANT TO GIVE YOU GUYS THIS IS HARD.
[00:10:02]
I'VE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE.GIVE YOU GUYS AN IDEA OF WHAT PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL IS LIKE.
PLEASANT VALLEY IS A SAFE ENVIRONMENT TO BE YOURSELF AND FEEL SAFE AND COMFORTABLE.
OUR COMMUNITY DOES NOT TOLERATE BULLING NO STAND FOR IT.
WE ACCEPT EVERYONE AND ATTEMPT IN OUR BEST EFFORTS TO MAKE EVERYONE FEEL LOVED WELCOMED AND IMPORTANT.
>> I WASN'T TOLD TO WRITE A PAPER, BUT [LAUGHTER] HONESTLY.
I AGREE WITH YOU, PLEASANT VALLEY IS A REALLY SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR PEOPLE THERE.
EVERYONE GETS TREATED WELL, THE TEACHERS ARE ALWAYS PEOPLE YOU CAN GO TO IF YOU EVER NEED ANYTHING.
YOU ALWAYS GET THE HELP YOU NEED.
>> HAVE BOTH OF YOU BEEN AT PLEASANT VALLEY SINCE FIFTH GRADE?
>> I'VE BEEN HERE SINCE KINDERGARTEN.
>> I'VE BEEN HERE SINCE FIRST GRADE.
>> NICE. YOU WENT ALL THE WAY UP THROUGH PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY AND THEN OVER TO PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE.
>> I THINK I MOVED SCHOOLS FOR TWO YEARS BECAUSE I WENT TO A DIFFERENT STATE BECAUSE YOU'RE PLANNING TO LIVE THERE, BUT WE CAME BACK.
I'VE BEEN HERE FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS.
FIRST GRADE THROUGH FOURTH GRADE AND THEN SEVENTH THROUGH EIGHT.
>> DO YOU GUYS PARTICIPATE IN ANY ACTIVITIES, ANY SPORTS?
>> RIGHT NOW, WE'RE BOTH DOING TRACK, BUT LAST YEAR, I DID SOCCER, BASKETBALL, AND VOLLEYBALL.
>> I HOLD THAT GIRLS 100 METER RECORD.
[APPLAUSE] YOU ENJOY THE SPORTS.
YOU BOTH PLAN TO PLAY IN HIGH SCHOOL WHEN YOU MOVE OUT?
>> I FEEL LIKE EVERY SINGLE SPORT AT OUR SCHOOL IS REALLY, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SAY IT.
SEE OUR SCHOOL, IT'S A GOOD SCHOOL.
I THINK IT IS. WE WEREN'T REALLY PREPARED FOR THIS BECAUSE WE WERE JUST TOLD WE'RE GOING TO REPRESENT SCHOOL. SORRY.
>> NOW, WE JUST NEED TO ASK BECAUSE HE'S IN THE AUDIENCE, WHAT DO YOU THINK IF YOUR PRINCIPAL? [LAUGHTER]
>> OH, PRINCIPLES THE BEST, [OVERLAPPING] [LAUGHTER] THE COOLEST PEOPLE EVER.
>> THERE YOU GO. YOU GUYS ARE LEARNING FAST.
>> PRINCIPLES ARE REALLY COOL, TOO.
HE TOLD ME TO SAY REALLY GOOD THINGS ABOUT HIM.
[OVERLAPPING] BUT THEY'RE BOTH REALLY GREAT AND THEY'RE NICE FUNNY.
>> THEY'RE VERY FUNNY AND EASY TO TALK TO ABOUT ANYTHING.
>> FANTASTIC. IF THERE WAS SOMETHING THAT YOU COULD CHANGE OR MAKE BETTER OR ADD.
>> OUR CAFETERIA. [OVERLAPPING]
>> I ALSO WANT TO SAY, SINCE WE DON'T HAVE A CAFETERIA, I THINK WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO MOVE AROUND AND SIT WITH OUR FRIENDS AND NOT JUST HAVE TO STAY IN ONE CLASSROOM.
>> WELL, YOUR PRINCIPAL IS HERE.
I'M SURE YOU HEARD THAT. HE'S GOING TO FIX THAT.
>> WELL, FOR TWO INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE NEVER DONE SOMETHING LIKE THIS, YOU DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB.
WE APPRECIATE YOU COMING AND VISITING US AND SHARING.
>> THANK YOU CALLING US OUT HERE.
>> THANK YOU. THAT'S A GREAT. [APPLAUSE]
>> I BELIEVE WE HAVE REPRESENTATIVES FROM RIVER HOMING.
>> HEY YOU AGAIN. WELL THAT'S VERY LOUD.
[LAUGHTER] MY NAME IS HOLLY, AND I'M ASP'S VICE PRESIDENT OF RIVER HOMING AND I'M BACK TO GIVE YOU A REPORT ON RIVER HOMING'S ASP AND WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO.
FAMILY DANCE WAS ON APRIL 12 AND WAS A HIT WITH BOTH FAMILIES AS WELL AS OLDER KIDS, WHICH WAS EXACTLY OUR GOAL FOR THIS YEAR, INCLUDING BOTH OUR YOUNGER AND OLDER AGE DEMOGRAPHICS AND OUR EVENTS IS ALWAYS A GOAL BUT ALWAYS A CHALLENGE.
THIS YEAR, WE GOT ONE STEP CLOSER.
EVEN THOUGH THE TURNOUT WASN'T AS GRAND AS OUR OTHER DANCES, IT WAS DEFINITELY STILL A SUCCESS WITH LOTS OF PEOPLE COMING TO ENJOY THE MUSIC AS WELL AS THE PHASE PAINTING THAT WE HAD, AND WE ALSO DID SHAPED ICE, WHICH WE HANDED OUT, AND THAT'S SOMETHING WE'VE NEVER ATTEMPTED BEFORE, BUT WE'LL DEFINITELY BE DOING IT FOR OUR FUTURE EVENTS.
SPIRIT WEEK AND ASSEMBLIES WERE APRIL 15TH THROUGH 19TH WITH A K THROUGH TWO AND THREE THROUGH SIX ASSEMBLY ON BOTH MONDAY AND TUESDAY AND A SEVENTH THROUGH 12TH ASSEMBLY ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE'VE EVER ATTEMPTED A K THROUGH SIX ASSEMBLY BEFORE, AND I DEFINITELY THINK WE WILL CONTINUE THIS IN THE FUTURE,
[00:15:02]
AS IT MADE THE YOUNGER STUDENTS FEEL REALLY INCLUDED AND MORE CONNECTED TO OUR SCHOOL, AS WELL AS A THEME TEACHING THEM THE IMPORTANCE OF NOT LETTING YOUR FEARS HOLD YOU BACK.THE SEVENTH THROUGH 12TH GRADE ASSEMBLIES HAVE THE SAME EFFECT.
I MUST SAY IT WAS SO COOL TO SEE OUR SMALL SCHOOL COME TOGETHER AS ONE.
THE SPIRIT WEEK THEMES WERE FUN AND CREATIVE AND BARBECUE DAD VERSUS SOCCER MOM WAS DEFINITELY A FAN FAVORITE.
GOT TALENT IS THE NEXT BIG EVENT AND IT IS COMING UP THIS FRIDAY AT 6:00 P.M. ARHS GOT TALENT IS THE TALENT SHOW THAT WE PUT ON EVERY YEAR, AND IT IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND BELOVED EVENTS THAT WE DO.
IT IS ONCE AGAIN A CHANCE FOR US TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN GRADES, AND IT IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE SCHOOL TO COME TOGETHER AND SEE WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE CAPABLE OF.
IT IS A SUPER FUN EVENT AND I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE EVERYTHING.
PROM IS FINALLY HERE AND IT'S HAPPENING MAY 11 AT VICTORIA VINEYARDS, AND THE THEME IS SWAN LAKE.
WE'VE ALREADY SEEN SOME ENTHUSIASM FOR THIS EVENT, AND I'M SO EXCITED TO SEE HOW IT GOES.
THAT'S ALL I HAVE FOR YOU GUYS.
THANK YOU. DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
>> JUST A COMMENT THAT I'VE HEARD OF OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE SPIRIT WEEK HAVING BARBECUE DAD AND SOCCER MOM.
I'VE SEEN SOME OF THE OUTFITS.
>> YOU SEE THE OUTFITS THAT. [OVERLAPPING] IT'S CRAZY.
>> I'M KIND OF OFFENDED. [LAUGHTER] I FALL INTO THAT CATEGORY.
>> PEOPLE GOT REALLY INTO IT FOR SURE.
>> THANK YOU FOR SHARING WITH US.
>> I APPRECIATE IT. [APPLAUSE]
>> DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER SCHOOLS HERE TO COME SPEAK TONIGHT OR ANY OTHER STUDENTS?
>> CAN SHE YOU SPEAK EVEN IF OTHER STUDENTS [INAUDIBLE]
>> THANK YOU. I'M MADISON CHANDLER.
I'M A TENTH GRADER AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.
I JUST WANTED TO BRING UP SOME STUFF THAT HAPPENED AND SORRY.
>> I KNOW THAT OUR SCHOOL HAS REALLY TRIES TO PUT FORWARD A VERY EQUITABLE AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT, AND THEY DO REALLY TRY.
BUT I KNOW THAT SOME OF OUR STAFF, I'VE BEEN TAKING ASL FOR TWO YEARS NOW AND THIS YEAR, MY ASL TEACHER IS DEAF AND IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP MULTIPLE TIMES, JUST IN CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN ME AND HER THAT ONE EXAMPLE IS THAT THIS MORNING AT A STAFF MEETING, AN EMERGENCY STAFF MEETING.
IT HAS IT WAS BROUGHT UP THAT SHE DID NOT HAVE AN INTERPRETER.
THAT MADE ME REALLY UPSET FOR HER BECAUSE THE DEAF COMMUNITY FACES MANY BARRIERS ALREADY.
THERE'S A HUGE LANGUAGE BARRIER, AND HER NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE THAT ACCESSIBILITY TO INFORMATION IT'S SO DETRIMENTAL BECAUSE I VIEW HER AS MY SAFE PERSON IN THE SCHOOL.
I KNOW THAT MANY OTHER STUDENTS MIGHT VIEW HER THE SAME WAY AND THAT HAVING A STAFF MEMBER THAT WHEN IT DOESN'T HAVE THE ACCESSIBILITY PROVIDED TO THEM TO HAVE CERTAIN INFORMATION, COULD REALLY HARM THE STUDENT IF THEY NEEDED TO GO TALK TO THEM AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE CORRECT INFORMATION OR KNOW WHAT THEY COULD AND CANNOT SAY.
I'VE ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT THE STAFF TOO, THERE IS A HUGE BARRIER THERE.
AND I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS PROVIDED, BUT I KNOW THAT THERE ARE OTHER SCHOOLS THAT PROVIDE ASL CLASSES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL TIME FOR STAFF TO BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE FREELY WITH DEAF INDIVIDUALS ON THE STAFF.
I THINK THAT DOING SOMETHING SIMILAR TO THIS COULD BE REALLY HELPFUL TO EVERYONE.
I KNOW THAT PRAIRIE, EVERGREEN AND BATTLE GROUND AND THERE MIGHT BE MORE SCHOOLS OUT THERE THAT DO HAVE DEAF INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE PART OF THEIR STAFF AND DEAF TEACHERS, AND THAT PROVIDING THIS ACCESSIBILITY IS SUPER IMPORTANT AND KEY TO EVERYONE IN THE ENTIRE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT.
[00:20:03]
OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT IS KNOWN TO NOT BE THE MOST INCLUSIVE, ESPECIALLY BATTLE GROUND TO HIGH SCHOOL.I THINK THAT BY NOT HAVING THIS INCLUSIVITY WITHIN OUR STAFF, IT SETS THIS BAR FOR THE STUDENTS, IT'S OKAY FOR THEM SO WHY ISN'T IT OKAY FOR ME?
>> WELL, FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO TELL YOU THANK YOU FOR COMING HERE.
IT JUST SHOWS YOUR PASSION AND HOW MUCH YOU CARE, AND THAT'S TRULY APPRECIATED.
I ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT WE WILL FOLLOW UP ON THAT.
THANK YOU FOR BRINGING IT TO OUR ATTENTION.
JUST LIKE I SAID, IT'S BRAVE OF YOU TO BE HERE.
IT'S NOT THE EASIEST PLACE TO DO THIS, BUT WE APPRECIATE IT GREATLY AND I PROMISE WE WILL FOLLOW UP.
>> THANKS, MADISON. [APPLAUSE] DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER SCHOOLS OR STUDENTS TO COME FORWARD? I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR REPORTS.
>> SHE WANTS ME TO GO FIRST AGAIN.
IS MY MIC ON? IT IS. IT'S HARD TO TELL. SOME TRACK STATS.
THIS IS QUITE THE PEAK OF THE SEASON THAT WE'RE IN RIGHT NOW.
BATTLEGROUND HAS A MEET TOMORROW AND I THINK PRAIRIE DOES TOO.
I DON'T KNOW WHO PRAIRIE IS COMPETING AGAINST, BUT BATTLEGROUND IS COMPETING AGAINST SKYVIEW, WHICH IS A VERY FUN MEET EVERY YEAR.
WILFOSTER FROM PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL RIGHT NOW IS FIRST IN FOR STATE IN THE SHOT PUT BY ALMOST A FOOT AND HE'S ALSO THIRD IN DISCUS THEN WY FROM PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL IS FIFTH IN THE SHOT PUT, AND GRACIE FROM PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL IS STILL EIGHTH IN HIGH JUMP.
WHEN SOPHIA FROM BATTLEGROUND, SHE'S 9TH IN THE 3,000.
AUDREY FROM BATTLEGROUND IS 15TH AND THE JAVELIN.
JAVELIN IS KIND OF HARD TO GET UP THERE BECAUSE IT'S A THROWING EVENT.
ZACH FROM BATTLEGROUND IS 11TH IN THE 800 BY A COUPLE MILLISECONDS.
THEN WARKIN FROM BATTLEGROUND IS NINTH AND THE 3,000.
I ACTUALLY DON'T HAVE MUCH ELSE TO REPORT BECAUSE WE HAD OUR ASB REPORT TODAY.
I JUST HAD A FEW THINGS TO POINT OUT AND MENTION.
FIRST OF ALL, BEING THAT TRYING TO FIND IT HERE.
THAT ESPORTS IS THE WHSP STATE CHAMP.
THAT'S REALLY COOL COMING FROM BATTLEGROUND.
YEAH. CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM.
ALSO, THREE STUDENTS FROM SKILLS USA WON A WELDING FABRICATION CONTEST.
NOW THAT I'M ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR IT, I CAN'T FIND THEIR NAMES. HERE WE GO.
JASON LENDERVL, ADEN GLANCLAVEZ AND AVERY CARLSON WON SECOND PLACE FOR WELDING FABRICATION AT THE SKILLS USA STATE COMPETITION.
THEN THE JAZZ BAND AT BATTLEGROUND HIGH SCHOOL WENT TO PLEASANT HILL JAZZ COMPETITION, AND THEN WE PLACED THIRD PLACE.
SPECIFICALLY, I WANTED TO MENTION CLAIRE MOSS BECAUSE SHE WON THE OUTSTANDING MUSICIAN AWARD FOR THE ENTIRE FESTIVAL, WHICH INCLUDED MANY, MANY BANDS FROM HIGH SCHOOLS, MIDDLE SCHOOLS.
YEAH, WE'RE JUST VERY PROUD OF HER AND HAPPY FOR THAT AWARD.
GOING TO BATTLEGROUND STUDENT. THAT'S ABOUT IT.
>> I REALLY APPRECIATE THESE UPDATES.
I JUST WANT TO SHARE AGAIN, STUDENT VOICE ENCOMPASSED EXACTLY WHAT WE WANT IT TO BE TONIGHT.
SOME GOOD, SOME BAD BUT ALL HEARD AND VERY APPRECIATED.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO BROUGHT THEM.
WE ARE GOING TO MOVE ON TO OUR NEXT RECOGNITION.
BUT FOR THOSE WHO CAME FOR STUDENT VOICE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STAY FOR THE WHOLE MEETING.
I KNOW THIS ONE WILL GO LONG, SO I WANT TO GIVE YOU YOUR ESCAPE ROUTE NOW IF YOU SO CHOOSE OR ANY TIME WHEN YOU'RE READY.
SO WITH THAT, WE'RE GOING TO DO SOME ADDITIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY LEADERS, AND I BELIEVE LINEL IS GOING TO COME UP AND PRESENT THAT.
IT'S MY PRIVILEGE TO INTRODUCE A COUPLE OF WONDERFUL PEOPLE.
PART OF MY ROLE AS DIRECTOR OF FEDERAL PROGRAMS. ONE OF THE PROGRAMS I OVERSEE IS OUR AMAZING FAMILY COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER.
WHO AM I INTRODUCING IS TRAVIS BLANKENSHIP, WHO IS ONE OF OUR FCRC SPECIALIST, AND HE'S GOING TO SPEAK TO ONE OF OUR VERY SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS WHO IS ACTUALLY RECOGNIZED CITYWIDE HERE IN BATTLEGROUND.
IF YOU CAN HELP ME WELCOME TRAVIS BLANKENSHIP, OUR FCRC SPECIALIST.
[00:25:01]
>> TRAVIS, GOOD TO SEE YOU HERE TODAY.
>> HEY, GOOD TO SEE YOU TOO LONG TIME LISTENER, FIRST TIME CALLER.
THANK YOU, FRIEND. MY NAME IS TRAVIS BLANKENSHIP.
I GET TO WORK AT OUR FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER.
I FUNCTION AS ONE OF TWO IN THIS DISTRICT'S SPECIALISTS THERE, WHICH MEANS I ALSO DOUBLE AS OUR MCKINNEY VENTO LIAISON AND FOSTER CARE LIAISON.
PART OF THE JOB OF THE FCRC IS TO FOCUS ON FAMILIES WHO ARE FACING HOUSING INSECURITIES, LOW INCOME BARRIERS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
SO WE HAVE A LOT OF STUDENTS THAT WE ARE SERVING AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO HAVE OPEN FOSTER CARE CASES OR WHO MIGHT BE COUCH SURFING.
WE SEE A VARIETY OF SITUATIONS IN WHICH STUDENTS ARE HAVING A HARD TIME ATTENDING SCHOOL OR THRIVING IN SCHOOL AND GETTING ALL THE THINGS THAT THEY AND THEIR FAMILY NEED TO STAY HEALTHY AND LIVING THE LIFE THAT THEY NEED TO LIVE AND WANT TO LIVE.
A FEW OF THE PROGRAMS THAT WE RUN ACTUALLY SERVE NOT JUST THAT LIMITED SCOPE OF FAMILIES, BUT ALL THE FAMILIES IN OUR DISTRICT.
WE HAVE PROGRAMS LIKE OUR BACKPACK PROGRAM, WHICH ALLOWS ANY STUDENT IN THE DISTRICT TO GO TO THEIR FRONT OFFICE OF THEIR SCHOOL AND PICK UP A BACKPACK FULL OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES FREE.
ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS SAY, HERE'S MY NAME, HERE'S MY GRADE, AND THAT'S IT.
WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THAT PROGRAM.
WE ALSO HAVE TOILETRIES AT OUR CLOSED CLOSET AVAILABLE.
WE CREATED PERIOD PACKS TO HELP STUDENTS WHO NEED TO MAKE USE OF THOSE WHEN THEY'RE AT THE NURSES OFFICES, AND WE TRY TO PUT THOSE IN ALL OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND HIGH SCHOOLS.
WE DO SHARE FOOD BAGS AND CONNECT PEOPLE WITH THE FOOD RESOURCES THEY NEED WHEN THEY'RE FACING FOOD SCARCITY, AND WE CONNECT PEOPLE TO ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY RESOURCES THAT ARE IN THE AREA AS NEEDED.
IT'S BEEN A JOY TO BE WORKING THERE FOR A LONG TIME.
ONE OF THE BIG THINGS WE DO, AS I SAID, IS OUR CLOTHES CLOSET PROGRAM, AND I'M VERY EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT BEV, WHO IS ONE OF OUR MAIN VOLUNTEERS THERE.
SHE HAS BEEN THERE FOR SEVERAL YEARS, AND I ONLY INHERITED THE CLOTHING CLOSET THIS YEAR.
WHEN I SHOWED UP, I SAID, I JUST WANT TO STAY OUT OF YOUR WAY.
YOU OBVIOUSLY KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
YOU'VE BEEN HERE. YOU'RE THE BOSS.
SO WHATEVER I CAN DO TO SUPPORT YOU AND WHAT YOU DO WITH THIS TEAM THAT YOU'RE LEADING, WHICH SHE DOES VERY WELL, I WANT TO DO.
SHE TOLD ME NO, YOU'RE THE BOSS.
WE'VE BEEN FIGHTING ABOUT THAT EVER SINCE AND JUST TRYING TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER.
BUT BETH COMPS VOLUNTEERING WITH US EVERY SINGLE WEEK.
SHE'S SORTING CLOTHES, SHE'S LOOKING THROUGH DONATIONS.
SHE'S PUTTING OUR TOILETRIES WHERE THEY NEED TO GO, OR OUR HOUSEHOLD ITEMS WHERE THEY NEED TO GO.
SHE MIGHT BE SHOPPING FOR OTHER ITEMS THAT WE DON'T HAVE.
SHE'S MAKING PARTNERSHIPS IN THE COMMUNITY. SHE DOES EVERYTHING.
SHE'S A SUPERSTAR, AND THAT IS WHY SHE'S THE PERSON OF THE YEAR FOR THE REFLECTOR, WHICH IS A HUGE HONOR, AND I'M GRATEFUL TO WORK WITH HER EVERY SINGLE WEEK.
I WOULD ALSO SAY THAT SHE SHOWS UP EVERY WEEK TO DO THAT WORK, WHICH I THINK MANY PEOPLE WOULD CONSIDER DIRTY WORK.
THERE'S CERTAINLY MUDDY CLOTHES THAT GET DONATED, AND THEY'RE JUST NOT ALWAYS THE MOST FRESH OF SMELL, AND SHE DOES IT WITH A HUGE SMILE EVERY SINGLE WEEK.
I THINK SHE BRINGS A LOT OF MORALE TO OUR TEAM.
SHE HAS NEVER FAILED TO BE ENCOURAGING, PERSONABLE, GENEROUS, PRODUCTIVE OR HER AUTHENTIC AND VIBRANT SELF.
I REALLY APPRECIATE HER PRESENCE IN OUR PROGRAM AND THE LEADERSHIP THAT SHE BRINGS TO IT AND THE JOY THAT SHE BRINGS TO ALL OF THE ROOMS THAT SHE STEPS INTO.
IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW VIBRANT SHE IS, I HOPE YOU GET TO SEE HER SHIRT TONIGHT.
IT MATCHES HER PERSONALITY. THANK YOU.
>> I DO A MIX TO OUR WONDERFUL PARTNERS, BGF SUPPLIES A LOT OF ALL OF THE WONDERFUL PROGRAMS YOU MENTIONED.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR OF YOUR SERVICE.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WHAT A GREAT HONOR.
I AM A PART OF THE BATTLEGROUND LIONS CLUB, AND IT'S REALLY THROUGH THEM THAT I GET TO DO A LOT OF MY VOLUNTEER SERVICE.
THEY ARE VERY SUPPORTIVE OF THE CLOTHES CLOSET OF BATTLEGROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION.
IT'S GREAT FUN TO BE A PART OF THIS TEAM.
ANOTHER FUN PART THAT OUR LIONS CLUB HAS RECENTLY STARTED DOING IS ALSO WE'VE ADOPTED MAPLE GROVE PRIMARY AND HAVE BEEN PROVIDING SNACKS FOR THE DIABETIC KIDS.
I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH NURSE TIFFANY'S.
[00:30:01]
>> THAT'S YOUR BACKGROUND, RIGHT?
>> YES, I ACTUALLY AM A RETIRED NURSE OF 100 YEARS.
>> THAT HAS BEEN REALLY FUN, AND THEN SHE HAS PLUGGED US IN ALSO WITH ASHLEY OF THE SEL CLASSROOM THERE AT MAPLE GROVE PRIMARY.
WE'RE PROVIDING SNACKS FOR THEM TOO.
IT'S JUST A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO BE A PART OF THIS COMMUNITY.
>> NO MONEY. WE'D LIKE TO TAKE.
>> WELL, THE GREAT NEWS IS THE RECOGNITION JUST KEEPS COMING.
REPRESENTATIVE MCCLINTOCK, WOULD YOU LIKE TO COME UP?
>> REPRESENTATIVE MCCLINTOCK IS JOINED BY REPRESENTATIVE CHENEY, BOTH FROM THE 18TH OF DISTRICT, AND OUR FORMER BATTLE GROUND MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL MEMBER PHILIP JOHNSON.
WE'RE HONORED. THANK YOU GUYS FOR JOINING US TONIGHT.
>> GOOD EVENING. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR INCLUDING THIS IN YOUR AGENDA FOR YOUR MEETING TONIGHT.
FOR THE RECORD, REPRESENTATIVE STEPHANIE MCCLINTOCK, WE ARE IN THE 18TH DISTRICT.
I REPRESENT THE 18TH AS WELL AS REPRESENTATIVE CHENEY HERE.
SO WE'RE EXCITED WHEN ANYTHING FABULOUS HAPPENS IN OUR COMMUNITY.
I LOVE BEING A CHEERLEADER FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SINCE I USED TO SIT WHERE YOU GUYS ARE.
FOR A TERM, IT'S BEEN A WHILE NOW AND SEE SOME OLD, I WON'T SAY OLD FACES, SOME FAMILIAR FACES FROM YEARS AGO BECAUSE I KNOW THAT I'M GETTING OLD TOO.
TONIGHT, WE'VE GOT A COUPLE RESOLUTIONS TO READ.
I'M GOING TO READ ONE, CHENEY IS GOING TO READ THE OTHER.
I'LL START WITH OUR FIRST ONE, WHICH IS WHEN WE DO A RESOLUTION, WE USUALLY HONOR A PERSON.
THIS IS A MIX OF AN ORGANIZATION AND THE PERSON THAT RUNS THIS.
I JUST WANTED TO PREFACE THAT FOR COLLEEN.

>> [BACKGROUND] CONGRATULATIONS.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. APPRECIATE IT.
>> THAT WRAPS UP OUR RECOGNITION PORTION OF THE EVENING.
WE WILL MOVE ON TO COMMITTEE REPORTS, AND WE WILL START WITH THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE.
THE POSITIONS THAT WE SUBMITTED HAVE GONE TO COMMITTEE.
THE NEXT STEP WILL BE WE'LL FIND OUT IF THEY'RE EITHER A DO PASS OR A DO NOT PASS RECOMMENDATIONS. I'LL LET YOU KNOW.
>> THANK YOU. HOW ABOUT AUDIT COMMITTEE?
>> WE HAD A MEETING AND REVIEWED THE BOARD'S BUDGET AND THE SUPERINTENDENT'S BUDGET, EVERYTHING LOOK GOOD.
WE DID GET OUR FINAL INVOICE FROM THE AUDIT.
IT WAS LIKE 8,900, SO IT SHOULD BE THE END OF IT AT THIS POINT.
WE WENT OVER SEVERAL VENDOR INVOICES, WENT OVER ALL THE PAYROLL, WENT OVER DENNY'S TIME, SHE'S STILL NO TIME TAKEN OFF IN THE LAST MONTH.
>> NICE. I HAVE A COUPLE OF THINGS I WANT TO ADD TO THE AUDIT COMMITTEE REPORT.
WE'VE SHARED BEFORE, BUT JUST IN CASE ANYBODY ISN'T AWARE, THERE'S ACTUALLY A CHARTER AROUND OUR AUDIT COMMITTEE, AND THAT CHARTER COMES WITH A LIST OF ACTIVITIES OR THINGS THAT NEED TO HAPPEN COULD BE EVERY MEETING, COULD BE ANNUALLY, OR JUST EVEN AS REQUIRED.
AS I WAS REVIEWING THE CHARTER, FOR JUST MY OWN REFLECTION, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT CHARTER SAYS IS THAT TWO MEMBERS SHOULD BE STAGGERED WITH THEIR TERMS, AND BOTH COMMITTEE MEMBERS WERE ASSIGNED IN JANUARY.
ONE OF THE TERMS IS ACTUALLY JANUARY THROUGH DECEMBER, WHICH DIRECTOR CHAMPINE WILL BE COMPLETING THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR, AND THEN ONE OF THE TERMS FOR THE MEMBERS ACTUALLY ENDS THIS MAY.
STARTING WITH OUR JUNE MEETING AND AUDIT REPORT, WE WILL BE REDISTRIBUTING OUR MEMBERS, DIRECTOR JOHNSON WILL BE JOINING THE AUDIT COMMITTEE, AND DIRECTOR TATE WHEN HE RETURNS, HE'LL BE JOINING THE BATTLEGROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION AS A REPRESENTATIVE.
THE IDEA BEING IS THAT ALL OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS GET AS MUCH EXPOSURE TO ALL OF OUR COMMITTEES AS POSSIBLE.
[00:50:03]
WE ASSIGNED THEM BOTH IN JANUARY, ONE ENDS IN MAY, THAT IT WAS A GOOD TIME TO KIND OF SWITCH A ROUX AND GET EVERYBODY LEARNING SOME NEW ITEMS. I JUST WANTED TO BRING THAT TO LIGHT, MY MISTAKE. BUT EASILY FIXED.>> NEXT UP, WE HAVE THE BATTLEGROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION.
>> YES. I ATTENDED THE BATTLEGROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION MEETING.
THERE'S A LOT THAT'S GOING ON, AND IT VERY EXCITING.
ALSO, AS YOU ALL KNOW, THE 30TH BIRTHDAY PARTY, I WAS CHARGED TO SPEAK ABOUT IT AGAIN.
REMIND EVERYONE TO COME 4:30-7:00, CHIEF UMTUCH MIDDLE SCHOOL.
THERE WAS DISCUSSION ABOUT THEIR INVESTMENT ACCOUNT.
THEY ARE WANTING TO MOVE THAT TO FIDELITY.
IT LOOKS AS THOUGH THAT MAY BE HAPPENING.
THERE WERE SOME CONCERNS WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH EDWARD JONES.
THEY WERE ALSO DISCUSSING ABOUT $5,000 FOR HIGH SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION.
I GUESS THERE WAS A REQUEST FOR FEES AND FINES TO BE COVERED.
THEY FELT THAT THE $5,000 THAT EACH HIGH SCHOOL IS GETTING THEY SHOULD BE TAKING THE MONEY OUT OF THAT.
THEY ALSO WE'RE STILL IN DISCUSSION ABOUT THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST FUNDRAISING AND THEY ARE LOOKING AT A GRANT FROM ONPOINT CREDIT UNION, $25,000 TO HELP WITH BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND BACK-TO-SCHOOL FOR NEEDY KIDS.
IT DOES SOUND LIKE THEY ARE GOING TO MOVE FORWARD WITH PARTNERING WITH PACIFIC NORTHWEST FUNDRAISING.
I GUESS EDDIE AT PACIFIC NORTHWEST FEELS THAT A GRANT MIGHT BE AVAILABLE, AND IT WAS RECOMMENDED TO MOVE FORWARD.
MAINLY, A LOT OF DISCUSSION AROUND SUSTAINABILITY AND THEY FEEL LIKE THEY WANT TO TRY THIS OUT FOR SIX MONTHS AND SEE HOW IT GOES.
THEN IF IT ENDS UP THAT IF IT'S A GOOD FIT, THEN THEY'LL CONTINUE ON AND IF IT'S NOT A GOOD FIT, THEN THEY'LL REGROUP AND THINK ABOUT IT AGAIN.
OF COURSE, AGAIN, THE 30TH BIRTHDAY PARTY NEEDS TO BE REMIND EVERYONE TO COME.
THEY'RE STILL LOOKING FOR SPONSORS FOR PAST AND FUTURE.
THEY ARE GOING TO BE TAKING A TABLE.
WALMART IS A NEW SPONSOR FOR THEM ALSO FOR THE GRADUATION DESTINATION.
THEY ALSO HAVE A RESOURCE FAIR COMING UP AT BATTLE GROUND LIBRARY.
THEY HAVE LEADERSHIP CLARK COUNTY WEEK COMING UP, AND THEY HAVE CAMP IN JUNE THAT THEY'RE FUNDING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS, OFFERING $1,000 SUPPORT AND THEY WOULD LIKE TO BE A BATTLE GROUND STUDENT THAT WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND.
QUITE A DISCUSSION ABOUT DOCTOR SUE'S BIRTHDAY.
I GUESS THE KAWANAS HAD BEEN DOING IT BUT BECAUSE OF THE AGING GROUP, THEY REALLY WANTED TO MOVE FORWARD TO HELP BECAUSE THEY FELT THAT THE HATS AND THE BOOKS WERE REALLY A GREAT THING FOR THE KIDS.
THEY WERE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW THEY COULD PARTNER WITH THEM.
THEY NEED COMMUNITY HELPERS TO STEP UP WITH STORAGE.
THEY'RE TALKING TO IQ CREDIT UNION AND THEY'RE GOING TO HANDLE THE HATS AND THE BOOKS.
THE ROTARY AND THE LINES MIGHT ALSO BE SOME SUPPORT TO THEM ALSO.
A BUNCH OF ACTIVITIES, THEY HAVE JUNE 6.
LEWIS RIVER ROTARY ACTION MAY 11 AT LNA.
MAD FUNDRAISER FOR THE FOUNDATION APRIL 28.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO EAT AT MAD, THEY WOULD APPRECIATE IT BECAUSE THEY GET A PORTION OF WHATEVER COMES IN. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH IT.
>> YEAH. WE HAD A MEETING AND A COUPLE OF INTERESTING THINGS CAME OUT, BUT ONE, THERE'S SOME CURRENT AMENDMENTS GOING ON RIGHT NOW ABOUT MAKING ADJUSTMENTS TO THE TRANSFER RULES BETWEEN SCHOOLS FOR ATHLETES AND WHETHER OR NOT THEY CAN PLAY AT VARSITY AT THE SAME LEVEL.
BUT THIS MEDIA HAS PICKED IT UP AND THERE'S BEEN THE TERM PORTAL USED, WHICH IS AFFILIATED WITH COLLEGES.
WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE IT CLEAR AT THE WIA THAT THERE'S NO TRANSFER PORTAL STARTING AT HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, AND THEY'RE TRYING TO CLEAR THAT UP AND JUST MAKE SURE EVERYONE ELIMINATES THAT WORD.
BUT THEY DID FORM A COMMITTEE TO EVALUATE THESE CHANGES IN THESE RULES,
[00:55:03]
AND WE'RE HOPEFUL THAT THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO DISSEMINATE SOME BETTER INFORMATION COME MAY.I'M GOING TO KEEP TRACK ON THIS ONE, AND JUST AS THAT COMES OUT, BECAUSE I THINK IT'S GOING TO IMPACT EVERYBODY, ESPECIALLY IN OUR REGION.
THE OTHER THING THAT THEY DID IS THEY VOTED ON THE 28 AMENDMENTS THAT ARE GOING UP TO THE WHOLE AT WIA LEVEL.
DISTRICT 4, WHICH WERE A PART OF IS WHERE WE DID THE VOTES WHERE THEY DID.
I'M NOT A VOTING MEMBER, BUT THERE WAS A FEW THAT I WAS TRACKING AND UNFORTUNATELY, ALL OF THEM GOT VOTED NO, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS KIND OF SURPRISING.
ONE OF THEM WAS TO BRING ES BOARDS IN UNDER WIAA AND THEN ACTUALLY GOT VOTED NO FOUR TO NINE.
WELL, THE OTHER TWO THAT I WAS SURPRISED ON WAS GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL WAS A TWO TO 11, NO AND SUPPORT FROM DISTRICT 4.
THEN GIRLS BADMINTON WAS A 1-12, NO.
I THINK THOSE WERE SURPRISING TO ME.
NOW, THE FLAG FOOTBALL 1, IT DOES GARNER A LOT OF SUPPORT ACROSS THE STATE.
AGAIN, DISTRICT 4 ONLY COUNTS AS ONE VOTE.
I'M GOING TO CONTINUE TO TRACK THAT ONE AS WELL.
THAT HAS A LOT OF SUPPORT FROM NFHS AND THERE'S PEOPLE ACTIVELY WORKING ON RULES AND SCHEDULES AND THINGS LIKE THAT FOR FLAG FOOTBALL, SO IT COULD STILL GO.
BUT AS FAR AS DISTRICT 4, THEIR VOTE WILL WE KNOW.
BUT THERE WAS 28 AMENDMENTS, IF YOU GUYS ARE CURIOUS WHAT THOSE ARE, HOW THOSE WERE VOTED, JUST LET ME KNOW. I CAN GET YOU COPIES.
>> THANK YOU. NEXT, WE HAVE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION UPDATES.
>> WELL, I NOTICED THAT THERE'S A CALL FOR PRESENTERS FOR THIS NOVEMBER.
I HOPE THAT WE HAVE SOME QUALITY SESSIONS THAT ARE CENTERED AROUND OUR CORE WORK, WHICH TO ME IS INSTRUCTION, AND IT MADE ME THINK ABOUT OUR COHERENCE WORK, AND THE FACT THAT SOME PEOPLE I KNOW HAVE DONE A PRESENTATION AT ANOTHER ORGANIZATION, AND, YOU KNOW, I JUST THOUGHT MAYBE.
>> WE ACTUALLY WERE THINKING ABOUT IT.
>> OH, GOOD. I WOULD WANT THE BOARD TO BE INVOLVED, OBVIOUSLY, BECAUSE IT'S WORST THAN I WAS THINKING IN TERMS OF COHERENCE AND HOW WE BROUGHT ALIGNMENT TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN, THE BOARD GOALS, THE SIP PROCESS?
>> THE BOARD'S ROLE IN ALL OF THAT.
>> I'M GLAD TO SUBMIT A PROPOSAL FOR US.
WE'D HAVE TO HAVE SOME STUDENT.
SORRY, YOU WOULDN'T BE AROUND.
BUT JULIA, YOU'D BE AROUND AND WE'D LIKE TO HAVE SOME STUDENT VOICE IN THAT PRESENTATION AS WELL. IF YOUR GAME.
>> JULIA, THAT'S EXACTLY THE WAY I FEEL, BUT.
SINCE I'M GETTING SUCKED IN, YOU'RE GOING WITH US.
>> IT'S JUST A ROOM FULL OF 100 PEOPLE.
>> MY PLAN IS JUST TO STAY IN THE BACKGROUND AND HELP SUPPORT.
ANOTHER THOUGHT CAME TO ME BECAUSE OF A QUESTION THAT HAS COME FROM A BOARD MEMBER IN A DIFFERENT DISTRICT, AND THAT IS THE FACT THAT WE HAVE AN AUDIT COMMITTEE, WHICH APPARENTLY IS NOT EVERY BOARD HAS AN AUDIT COMMITTEE AND THE WORK THAT WE DO AND WHY WE HAVE AN AUDIT COMMITTEE, AND MAYBE THINK THAT IS ANOTHER IDEA AS WELL. [OVERLAPPING]
>> THEN WE COULD GET MICHELLE INVOLVED.
>> YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO GO TO SPOKANE IN NOVEMBER. COME ON.
>> ANYWAY, I BETTER NOT SAY ANYMORE.
>> THANK YOU. THOSE ARE GOOD IDEAS.
>> I'LL JUST PIGGY BACK ON THAT THAT ONE OF THE GOALS WE JUST RECENTLY CREATED AS A BOARD WAS TO HOPEFULLY I'LL MAKE IT TO THE WASD CONFERENCE.
LISA AND I WERE WORKING EARLIER ON A LIST OF UPCOMING DATES JUST TO PUT THEM ON PEOPLE'S RADAR.
A LOT OF THEM ARE REALLY UP AND COMING LIKE THIS WEEK, THROUGH JUNE.
IT'S FAST AND FURIOUS THROUGH GRADUATION.
BUT THIS WOULD BE ONE TO DO A PLACEHOLDER FOR.
I THINK WE COULD SEND IT OUT TO THE BOARD SO THEY CAN GET IT ON THEIR CALENDARS NOW.
>> LISA SENT OUT A CALENDAR INVITE TODAY.
>> HE SENT IT JUST TO ME. I GOT IT.
>> I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE REST OF YOU.
>> LET'S SEE. HAS ALREADY TO BE DONE, BUT THEN I REALLY SAD TO SPEAK FOR HIM.
TOURS COMMITTEE, WE HAVE A TOUR TOMORROW AT TUKES VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL.
DID WE HAVE TOURS THAT WE NEED TO REPORT ON?
>> YES. WE HAD YACOLT WE HAD AS WELL AS PRINT SHOP, AND WAREHOUSE.
[01:00:09]
>> [OVERLAPPING] YACOLT WAS LAST FRIDAY AND SARA WAS WITH ME AND SO ONE OF THE EXCITING PARTS FOR ME WAS SOME AMAZING READING AND MATH DATA FROM THIS YEAR.
I THINK AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE PLC WORK THEY'VE BEEN DOING AND THE GROWTH FROM LAST FALL TO SPRING IS PHENOMENAL.
PARTICULARLY ONE PIECE OF THE DATA IS AROUND MATH AND A PARTICULAR GRADE LEVEL THAT IS DOING A WALK TO MATH MODEL.
I WAS EXCITED ABOUT THAT, REALLY EXCITED.
THE OTHER THING IS, WE HAPPEN TO BE THERE ON PIONEER DAY.
I'LL LET YOU TALK ABOUT PIONEER DAY, BUT ONE CLASSROOM WE WENT IN THERE WAS ACTUALLY A CAMPFIRE IN THERE AND KIDS AROUND A CAMPFIRE AND A STORY BEING TOLD. I'LL STOP THERE.
>> YEAH. IT WAS REALLY COOL TO SEE.
EVEN AT MY AGE, I WAS IN THERE JUST SO INTERESTED IN THE STORY THAT HE WAS TELLING WITH THE CAMP FIRE AND THE LIGHTS DIMMED.
I CAN'T IMAGINE AS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
ALL THE VOICES. IT WAS A DRAMATIC READING OF A CAMPFIRE STORY.
IT WAS JUST REALLY INTERESTING.
ALL THOSE FOURTH GRADERS, THEY MUST HAVE BEEN HAVING THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES.
ALSO THEY WERE ON LIKE A ROTATION BETWEEN CLASSES, AND THEY WERE MAKING LITTLE, MY GOSH, WHAT ARE THEY CALLED THE LITTLE WAGONS WITH SNACKS IN ONE CLASSROOM.
THEY WERE MAKING LITTLE TOYS IN ANOTHER CLASSROOM.
IT WAS JUST SUPER COOL TO SEE, AND I WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE ALL DAY DOING ALL THOSE ACTIVITIES.
BUT UNFORTUNATELY, I DID HAVE HIGH SCHOOL TO GO BACK TO.
BUT YEAH, GOING WHAT MARY SAID, THE DATA REFLECTING THE GROWTH THROUGHOUT THE YEAR FOR READING AND MATH DATA WAS ACTUALLY JUST REALLY IMPRESSIVE TO SEE.
YEAH. AND OVERALL, IT WAS A REALLY GOOD TOUR.
IT WAS GREAT TO SEE YAKO THE BUILDING IS JUST SO BEAUTIFUL TOO.
I LOVE EVERY TIME I GET TO GO TO YAK THE MURALS, YEAH, EVERYTHING THE DESIGN OF THE SCHOOL AS WELL.
ANYTHING ELSE? THAT WAS GREAT.
>> MIKE AND DAVID WERE WITH US, SO I DON'T KNOW IF THEY HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD.
>> WE WENT TO CAM IN LEWISVILLE AND TO THE WAREHOUSE AND THE PRINT SHOP.
BUT ANYWAY, ENDED UP SHOWING UP AND IT WAS REALLY A WONDERFUL BUILDING.
THEY DID MAKE A COMMENT THAT THEY WANTED TO MAKE IT THEIR OWN BECAUSE THEY FELT LIKE IT DIDN'T HAVE THE FINGERPRINTS OF KIDS YET.
THEY HAD SOME IDEAS ABOUT PICTURES THAT THEY MIGHT WANT TO DO MAYBE SOME MURALS.
I WANTED TO TELL TERRY BECAUSE HE'S NOT HERE TONIGHT, BUT WE SAW A LOT OF CHESS TROPHIES, [LAUGHTER] WHICH I KNEW HE WOULD BE THRILLED ABOUT.
AT LEAST IT'S ON TAPE SO SOMEBODY SEES IT.
[LAUGHTER] WE WENT INTO SEVERAL CLASSROOMS. IT WAS AMAZING TO SEE THE LEVEL OF ENGAGEMENT.
THE TEACHERS WERE TALKING, THE STUDENTS WERE ACTUALLY LOOKING AT THEM, LISTENING.
SOME PRETTY GREAT DISCUSSIONS WERE GOING ON.
I WANTED TO STAY IN MYSELF BECAUSE THE DISCUSSIONS AND THE TOPIC WAS REALLY INTERESTING.
ALL OF THE TEACHERS JUST WERE ENGAGING AND IT WAS JUST REALLY DELIGHTFUL TO WATCH THE INTERACTION WITH THE STUDENTS AND THE TEACHERS.
ALSO, WE GOT TO SEE THE NEW EQUIPMENT IN THE PRINT SHOP, WHICH WAS VERY HUGE AND REMARKABLE AND PRETTY COOL AND I GUESS, PRETTY EXPENSIVE TOO.
THEN WE ALSO WENT TO THE WAREHOUSE.
THAT WAS REALLY ENJOYABLE, VERY WELL ORGANIZED.
I HAD TOLD THE PERSON THAT WE MET THERE THAT MY HUSBAND WOULD BE PROUD BECAUSE HE WAS A WAREHOUSE MANN FOR 32 YEARS, AND SO IT WAS IMMACULATE.
BUT SHE WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT THE SPACE, WAS VERY TIGHT AND THAT THERE WOULD BE MORE THINGS COMING IN AND HOW TIGHT IT WOULD BE AND VERY THANKFUL FOR THE NEW WAREHOUSE.
SHE SAID TO MAKE SURE THAT WE KNEW HOW THANKFUL SHE WAS. IT WAS REALLY FUN.
[01:05:01]
>> IT WAS DEFINITELY A GOOD TOUR.
I DON'T HAVE A WHOLE LOT TO ADD, BUT I WILL SAY, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS REALLY WONDERFUL TO HEAR FROM STUDENTS AT CAM WAS THAT ONE OF THEIR FAVORITE THINGS IS HOW MUCH THEY'RE CHALLENGED AND THEY REALLY APPRECIATE BEING CHALLENGED ACADEMICALLY BY THEIR TEACHERS.
I REALLY APPRECIATED THAT COMMENT.
THE OTHER THING THAT I THINK IS WORTH NOTING IS THE ASB OR THE LEADERSHIP GROUP HAS DONE A FABULOUS JOB CREATING THESE POSTERS TO PROMOTE EVENTS IN THEIR BUILDING.
THEY HAVE THE PICTURES OF THE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AND STAFF ON THEM, BUT THEY'RE ALL DIGITALLY MADE.
THEY'RE REALLY HIGH QUALITY AND THEY'RE HANGING IN THE CAFETERIA.
IF YOU WERE A WAYS AWAY FROM THEM, YOU WOULDN'T REALIZE THAT THEY AREN'T PROFESSIONALLY DONE, SO HATS OFF TO THEM FOR THAT.
I WOULD ECHO MANY OF THE THINGS DEBBIE SAID.
IT WAS A GOOD TOUR. TRAVIS, ANYTHING?
>> JUST TWO THINGS. ONE, WE DID SEE A WATER SPILL ON THE CARPET.
THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE STUDENTS PUTTING THEIR TOUCH ON THE CARPET, [LAUGHTER] THE BAD NEWS IS KEVIN IS NOW VERY FRUSTRATED THAT I JUST SAID THAT.
[LAUGHTER] THE OTHER THING IS FOR THE FIFTH GRADERS.
THIS IS THEIR THIRD BUILDING IN THREE YEARS.
>> I THINK IT'S A HUGE TESTAMENT TO RYAN AND THE STAFF OVER AT CAM.
YOU CAN FEEL THE GRATITUDE FROM THE STUDENTS AND THE ADULTS FOR BEING IN THAT NEW BUILDING.
>> WELL, THANK YOU FOR SHARING THOSE.
AS I SAID, WE HAVE A BOARD TOUR TOMORROW AT TUKES VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL, JULIA AND DENNY AND I.
THEN TOUR GROUP 1 WILL BE AT SUMMIT VIEW AND CASEY ON THE 3RD OF MAY.
ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD BEFORE WE CLOSE THIS COMMITTEE REPORTS? THEN WE'LL MOVE ON TO DIRECTOR REPORTS.
>> I'M JUST JUMPING THE GUN, DIRECTOR.
>> DID YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE CAC MEETING? DID YOU GO? DID I GO?
>> I WAS GOING TO TALK ABOUT IT ANYWAY.
>> [INAUDIBLE]. I THINK I MISSED IT.
>> I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT IT. [LAUGHTER].
>> IT WAS AMAZING. I WAS THERE.
I'M SORRY. THERE'S SO MANY MEETINGS.
>> NO, IT WAS GREAT AND WE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT AI, WHICH WAS PRETTY WILD ACTUALLY.
BUT THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME.
>> I'LL LET YOU FINISH TALKING ABOUT TECH MEETING.
>> OTHER THAN I AGREE, IT WAS PRETTY AMAZING THAT PRESENTATION.
WE WILL CLOSE DIRECTOR REPORTS AND MOVE ON TO SUPERINTENDENT AND STAFF UPDATES.
[6. Superintendent and Staff Updates]
>> THANK YOU. JUST THREE QUICK ITEMS. NUMBER 1, WAS THAT WE DID HAVE OUR LAST CAC MEETING, CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE, AND OUR TOPIC WAS AI.
I THINK I APPRECIATE SCOTT AND CASSANDRA FOR COMING DOWN.
WE WERE ABLE TO GIVE AN OVERVIEW.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO, WE'RE WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE OSPI.
THEY JUST CAME OUT WITH A POLICY REGARDING AI.
I THINK INITIALLY WHEN AI CAME OUT, THERE WAS THIS FEAR AROUND IT, BUT WE ARE TRYING AS AN EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY AND BATTLE GROUND IS EMBRACING IT AS WELL, THIS IDEA THAT AI IS HERE TO STAY AND IT'S GOING TO BE A TOOL THAT WE CAN EITHER CHOOSE TO HELP OUR STUDENTS UNDERSTAND AND USE IN A POSITIVE MANNER, OR WE CAN IGNORE IT AND THEY'RE GOING TO USE IT IN A POTENTIALLY NEGATIVE WAY.
WE ARE TRYING TO EMBRACE THAT.
SCOTT'S DONE A GOOD JOB OF JUST LEARNING ABOUT IT AND WHAT WE CAN DO.
WE REALLY THINK THAT OVER THE NEXT YEAR WE'LL BE ABLE TO DO SOME TRAINING FOR OUR TEACHERS AND GET OUR TEACHERS MORE COMFORTABLE WITH IT AND THEN INCORPORATE IT INTO OUR CLASSROOM.
>> WE'RE LOOKING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE TRAIN OUR STAFF BEFORE WE OPEN IT UP FOR STUDENT USE, BEING VERY THOUGHTFUL ABOUT THE WAY IN WHICH TEACHERS CAN USE IT HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THE TECHNOLOGY, AS WELL AS HAVING A STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT AROUND AI USE AND SOME OTHER ISSUES THAT WE KNOW ARE GOING TO BE OF CONCERN AS WE ROLL OUT THE TOOL.
[01:10:05]
ONE OF THE WAYS THAT WE WANT TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND AI IS THAT IT'S REALLY CRITICAL THAT WE HAVE THE HUMAN PART OF PUTTING IN WHAT IT IS WE'RE ASKING IT TO DO.WE HAVE THE AI COMPONENT AND THEN WE HAVE THE HUMAN SIDE.
THAT'S A BIG PIECE COMING FROM FROM OSPI, IS MAKING SURE THAT IT DOES NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF THE LEARNING, IT ENHANCES THE LEARNING.
MANY OF THE OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP US UNDERSTAND IT AND NOT HAVE THAT FEAR.
I WILL TELL YOU I WAS PRETTY FEARFUL AT FIRST, IS TO GET ON AND BE ABLE TO USE SOME OF THE INFORMATION THAT'S COMING FROM THE DEVELOPERS, SUCH AS COMAMIGO.
IS A TED TALK ESSENTIALLY THAT DESCRIBES THE WAY IN WHICH YOU CAN MODIFY LESSONS TO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT STUDENTS AT DIFFERENT LEVELS.
IT'S AN EXAMPLE OF THE WAY IN WHICH IT CAN ENHANCE LEARNING RATHER THAN TAKE AWAY LEARNING FOR STUDENTS.
WE'RE TRYING TO BE VERY THOUGHTFUL ABOUT HOW WE ROLL THOSE TOOLS OUT.
THEY DID ON THE SAME NIGHT THAT WE HAD THE CAC MEETING, THEY DID HAVE THEIR FIRST TRAINING FOR STAFF, AND THEY HAVE A SERIES THAT THEY'RE OFFERING TO STAFF THAT THEY CAN TAKE USING THEIR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUNDS TO PAY THEMSELVES TO GO TO THOSE TRAININGS.
WE WILL BE CONTINUING TO ROLL THOSE OUT EACH SECTION OF THE YEAR SO THAT PEOPLE CAN GET MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN BEFORE WE ROLL IT OUT TO STUDENTS AND OPEN IT UP FOR STUDENTS.
>> ONE OF THE THINGS I LIKED WAS THE ANALOGY OF THE CALCULATOR.
IN A MATH CLASS, THERE'S TIMES WHERE IT'S APPROPRIATE TO USE A CALCULATOR AND WHERE IT'S NOT APPROPRIATE TO USE A CALCULATOR.
THE ANALOGY WAS COMPARING AI TO THAT.
THERE WILL BE TIMES WHERE IT'S APPROPRIATE TO USE IT AND TIMES WHERE IT'S NOT.
BEING CLEAR AND TRANSPARENT IN THAT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN STAFF AND STUDENTS, I THINK IS GOING TO BE A HUGE WIN.
>> I THINK ONE OF THE MISTAKES WE MADE WHEN SOCIAL MEDIA HIT THE SCENE FOR OUR KIDS, IS WE WENT NOT IN SCHOOLS.
WELL, GUESS WHAT, IT'S IN SCHOOLS.
WE'RE TRYING TO BE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT THAT BECAUSE THERE'S NO WAY TO HOLD THAT WAVE BACK.
IT'S A MATTER OF HELPING OUR STUDENTS UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE IT APPROPRIATELY AND WHAT IT'S FOR AND WHEN IT SHOULD BE UTILIZED.
I THINK ARE REALLY IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF BECOMING AN INTELLIGENT CITIZEN FOR THE FUTURE.
>> THANK YOU. ONE OF THE THINGS I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU, SOME GOOD NEWS. CAN WE GO AHEAD AND PUT THAT UP? AS YOU KNOW, IT'S PROBABLY BEEN A YEAR NOW WHERE WE HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE A STUDENT WAS HIT TRYING TO CROSS 503 OUTSIDE OF PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.
FORTUNATELY, THE STUDENT WAS NOT SIGNIFICANTLY INJURED AND RECOVERED, AND THAT'S THE GOOD NEWS.
BUT WHAT IT DID WAS IT SPURRED A LOT OF PUBLIC INTEREST, AND WE WERE FORTUNATE IN THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, HEARD ABOUT IT AND STARTED TO LOOK IN.
I SAY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION BECAUSE THAT ROAD, 503, IS A STATE ROAD VERSUS A COUNTY OR A CITY ROAD.
THEY CAME IN AND THEY WORKED WITH US.
WORKED WITH MIKE KESSLER, TOM ADAMS, MANDY WAUGH, AND THEY JUST RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT THEY ARE GOING TO PUT IN WHAT THEY CALL A HAWK CROSSING.
WHAT IT DOES IS IT COORDINATES WITH THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN FRONT OF IT AND BACK OF IT AND IT DOESN'T WORK UNTIL THE STUDENT PRESSES IT, THEN THEY CROSS.
AS YOU CAN SEE THERE, THEY'RE GOING TO BUILD A MEDIAN AREA WHERE STUDENTS CAN THEN STAND IN THE MIDDLE THERE AND THEN BE ABLE TO CROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE.
NOW, WE UNDERSTAND THAT ALL OF THIS DOES TAKE TIME.
THIS IS NOT SCHEDULED TO START THE CONSTRUCTION OF IT OR INSTALLATION OF THIS, UNTIL JANUARY OF 2025, BUT IT HAS BEEN APPROVED, AND WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION.
WE APPRECIATE THEM COMING IN AND WORKING WITH US.
I THINK IT'S A DEFINITE IMPROVEMENT IN TERMS OF STUDENT SAFETY,
[01:15:01]
SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT.>> MAYBE YOU COULD ASK THEM TO RENAME IT.
>> TO THE FALCON CROSSING CROSSING. [LAUGHTER]
>> THE FALCON CROSSING CROSSING?
>> I DIDN'T EVEN THINK OF THAT. [LAUGHTER]
>> ANY COLORS YOU WANT IN MIND?
>> TED WANTS ORANGE AND BLACK.
THEN THE LAST THING FOR ME IS I WANTED TO LET THE BOARD KNOW THAT OUR WAIVER DAY HAS BEEN APPROVED.
WE PUT INTO THE STATE FOR ONE WAIVER DAY.
STATE LAW REQUIRES US TO USE AT LEAST THREE SNOW MAKEUP DAYS, AND WE HAD A POTENTIAL OF USING FIVE IN THE NORTH AND FOUR IN THE SOUTH WE WERE ABLE TO GET RID OF ONE OF THOSE DAYS, SO IT WILL MAKE THREE NOW THE LAST DAY FOR STUDENTS IN THE SOUTH WILL BE JUNE 14TH, AND THE LAST DAY WITH STUDENTS IN THE NORTH WILL BE JUNE 17TH.
THAT'S A FRIDAY FOR THE SOUTH AND A MONDAY FOR THE NORTH.
NOW, EVEN THOUGH THE STUDENTS WON'T HAVE TO ATTEND, THE TEACHERS STILL HAVE TO ATTEND, SO THE LAST DAY FOR STAFF, THE NORTH, WILL BE TUESDAY THE 18TH, AND THE SOUTH WILL BE MONDAY THE 17TH.
WE'RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT, WE'RE PUTTING OUT NOTIFICATION OF THAT.
DID THAT GO OUT ALREADY? IT JUST WENT OUT. THERE YOU GO.
>> I DON'T CARE. [LAUGHTER] [OVERLAPPING] BY THEN.
>> THAT'S IT FOR ME. I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO TEACHING AND LEARNING.
>> WELL, THIS EVENING, I'M HAPPY TO SAY WE ARE GOING TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE AROUND OUR PLCS AND THE SURVEY THAT WE'VE GIVEN TO STAFF AROUND THAT WORK.
TO PRESENT TONIGHT, DAVID KENNEDY HAS A PRESENTATION FOR YOU THAT WILL INCLUDE A PROPOSAL OF WAIVER DAYS AND HOW WE HOPE NEXT YEAR TO CONTINUE THAT AND POSSIBLY MOVE TO A TRANSITION AWAY FROM THOSE IN FUTURE YEARS.
WE WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT WITH YOU.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME THIS EVENING.
WE ARE FINISHING OUR SECOND YEAR OF WAIVER DAY.
WHEN WE SAY WAIVER DAY, THIS IS DIFFERENT THAN THE WAIVER DAYS [OVERLAPPING].
CORRECT. DIFFERENT WAIVER DAY HERE.
THIS IS YEAR TWO, THESE CAME ABOUT AS A RESULT OF STAFF COMING TO US SAYING, WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET THROUGH THE ENTIRE PLC PROCESS WE WERE RESPONSIVE AND YOU WERE GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO PROVIDE THIS.
THE FIRST YEAR WE DID THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN '22, '23.
WE DID TWO WAIVER DAYS TO PROVIDE STAFF TIME TO DO THE FRONT PART OF THE PLC PROCESS, AND THEN THIS YEAR WE'VE CONTINUED WITH THAT.
WE WANTED TO SHARE SOME OF THE DATA AS SHELLY WAS SAYING, WE SPEND SOME TIME EVERY SPRING PULLING AND SURVEYING OUR STAFF TO SEE HOW IS THIS MEETING THEIR NEEDS.
HERE'S THE DATA THAT WE HAVE TO SHARE WITH YOU TONIGHT.
FIRST THING WE WANT TO CELEBRATE IS IN THE UPPER LEFT-HAND CORNER, YOU'LL SEE THAT THERE WERE 462 RESPONSES THIS YEAR, WHICH IS A SIGNIFICANT UPTICK FROM LAST YEAR.
THIS IS ALMOST TWO-THIRDS OF OUR TEACHING STAFF THAT'S REPRESENTED IN THIS DATA.
WE ASKED THE QUESTION, HOW VALUABLE DID YOU FIND THIS YEAR'S WAIVER DAYS? IN PARTICULAR, WE WERE CURIOUS ABOUT THE PLC SIDE OF THE WAIVER DAY.
WAIVER DAYS THIS YEAR WERE SPLIT INTO A MORNING SESSION WITH PLC WORK AND THE AFTERNOON WAS TO WORK AT SOME OF THE NEW CURRICULUMS THAT HAVE BEEN ADOPTED IN THE LAST YEAR.
WHEN WE LOOK AT THE RED AND THE BLUE, BOTH EXTREMELY VALUABLE AND VALUABLE, WE HAD 75% OF OUR STAFF SAY THAT THE WAIVER DAY WAS REALLY MEETING THEIR NEED.
WHAT'S FASCINATING IS WHEN WE LOOK AT THE DATA BY JOB GROUP.
THIS IS LAST YEAR'S DATA, AND YOU CAN SEE HERE QUITE A DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT JOB GROUPS.
OUR GEN ED GROUP AND OUR SPECIALIST GROUP, FOR THE MOST PART, WE'RE SAYING, THESE DAYS ARE REALLY HELPFUL, BUT YOU LOOK AT THE SPECIAL ED NUMBERS AND YOU LOOK AT OUR ESA NUMBERS AND THEY'RE VERY CONCERNING.
ONLY ONE IN THREE SPECIAL ED STAFF LAST YEAR SAID WAIVER DAYS
[01:20:02]
WERE HELPFUL AND ONLY ONE IN FIVE ESA STAFF, SO THAT WOULD BE OUR SLPS, OTS, PSYCHS, THOSE FOLKS, ONLY ONE IN FIVE SAID IT WAS HELPFUL.I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU THIS YEAR THEIR DATA LOOKS LIKE THIS.
WE SEE NEARLY A 40% INCREASE IN THE REPOSITIVE RESPONSES FROM OUR SPED STAFF AND A 33% INCREASE WITH OUR ESA STAFF.
WE'VE BEEN VERY INTENTIONAL ABOUT BRINGING GREATER CLARITY TO THOSE WORK GROUPS WHOSE WORK SOMETIMES DOESN'T FIT NEATLY INTO THE PLC UMBRELLA OR UNDER THE PLC UMBRELLA.
I THINK THAT DATA REFLECTS SOME OF THE PROGRESS WE'VE MADE, BUT EVEN OUR GEN ED AND SPECIALIST GROUPS WENT UP AS WELL.
>> I DO WANT TO JUMP IN HERE AND JUST SAY THAT A LOT OF THAT IS DUE TO THE WORK THAT KELLY CLAY, JENNIFER GOODWIN, AND DAVID HAVE BEEN DOING IN MEETING WITH THOSE GROUPS AND HELPING GUIDE THEM IN WHAT THEIR PLC LOOKS LIKE AND HOW IT'S DIFFERENT.
I THINK WITHOUT THAT, WE WOULDN'T SEE THESE TYPES OF IMPROVEMENTS.
>> IT'S DEFINITELY BEEN A TEAM EFFORT, AND WE WERE REALLY ENCOURAGED BY THIS DATA.
THE OTHER WAY WE WANTED TO LOOK AT THIS DATA IS, HOW WELL IS IT BEING ACCEPTED AT EACH OF THE LEVEL.
PRIMARY SCHOOL TRADITIONALLY HAS BEEN A PRETTY STRONG ADOPTER, YOU CAN SEE IN 2023.
WE HAD REAL STRONG PRIMARY SCHOOL SUPPORT FOR WAIVER DAYS, BUT YOU CAN SEE THE DIP THERE WITH HIGH SCHOOL IN ALE THAT'S CONCERNING.
WE HAD ONLY ABOUT HALF OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL FOLKS SAYING, WE FOUND THIS TIME VALUABLE.
THIS YEAR, THOSE NUMBERS LOOK A LOT DIFFERENT.
NOW WE'RE REACHING THAT THRESHOLD WHERE ALMOST ALL OF OUR LEVELS ARE AT CLOSE TO THAT 80% LINE, WHICH IS WHAT WE WOULD HOPE TO SEE, AND THE JUMPS IN ALE, I CAN TELL YOU BOTH RIVER HOMELINK AND CAM HAVE MADE SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN REALLY EMBRACING THIS WORK AND FIGURING OUT HOW DOES THE PLC FUNCTION IN AN ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SITUATION.
WE'RE STARTING TO FIGURE THINGS OUT, AND IT'S OUR PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE FIGURING THAT OUT.
WE'RE EMPOWERING THEM WITH THE TIME AND THE CLARITY OF HOW TO USE THE TIME, BUT THIS IS REALLY A TESTAMENT TO THE GREAT WORK THAT THE BUILDINGS ARE DOING IN LEVERAGING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS WORK.
ON THE RESPONDENTS THAT YOU'VE HAD BETWEEN LAST YEAR AND THIS, OF THE PERSONNEL, IS THE VOLUME SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER FROM LAST YEAR TO THIS YEAR, NOT ONLY THE RESPONDENTS, BUT THE PEOPLE THAT ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE PLC WORK? OF THOSE FOLKS, DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA OF HOW MANY OF THOSE ARE NEW EMPLOYEES THIS YEAR THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE LAST YEAR?
>> I DON'T I DON'T HAVE THAT DATA AS FAR AS NEW EMPLOYEES.
NO, I'M NOT GOING TO SAY EVERYTHING IS PUPPY DOGS AND DAFFODILS UP HERE.
THERE IS SOME DATA IN THE SURVEY WHERE PEOPLE ARE LIKE, HEY, LEAVE US ALONE.
WE KNOW WHAT TO DO, YOU'RE GIVING US TOO MUCH DIRECTION, SO ON AND SO FORTH.
BUT THOSE TEND TO BE MORE OF THE OUTLIER.
I THINK THIS DATA IS REALLY PRETTY POWERFUL.
THEY COULD HAVE SAID WHATEVER THEY WANTED.
I'M REALLY THRILLED WITH EVEN THE GROWTH WE SAW AT HIGH SCHOOL.
>> IT WOULD BE A CURIOUS STATISTIC JUST TO SEE BECAUSE I'M SURE YOU WILL KNOW ANYTIME YOU HAVE NEW EMPLOYEES, THEY TEND TO BE MORE OF A POSITIVE STAKEHOLDER THAN A NEGATIVE ONE, AND IT'S OLDER EMPLOYEES THAT TEND TO BE THE NEGATIVES THAT YOU HAVE TO OVERCOME.
I'D BE CURIOUS TO SEE HOW MANY POTENTIALLY PREVIOUS NEGATIVE STAKEHOLDERS ARE NOW POSITIVE, VERSUS NEW EMPLOYEES THAT ARE MAYBE POSITIVE BY DEFAULT.
WE DON'T GATHER WHO TOOK IT, SO THERE'S NOT REALLY A WEIRD WAY TO COMPARE THAT.
WE JUST KNOW HOW MANY TOOK IT, AND THEIR GROUPS.
>> WE ASK THEM TO IDENTIFY THE GROUP THEY'RE IN.
WE DON'T ASK, HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING? WE WANT THIS TO BE AS ANONYMOUS AS POSSIBLE SO THAT THE DATA IS REALLY VALID.
CERTAIN TIMES, THEY'RE PRETTY HONEST.
>> THERE GOOD NUMBERS. I'M JUST CURIOUS.
>> DID A FULL RELEASE WAIVER DAY PROVIDER TEAM ADEQUATE TIME TO COMPLETE PLC STEPS 1 AND 2? REMEMBER, WE TALK ABOUT THOSE FOUR FUNDAMENTAL STEPS OF PLCS.
YOU CAN SEE THE VAST MAJORITY 73.4% ARE SAYING, YES, THAT WORKS.
IN THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER, YOU SEE 2023, THAT NUMBER WAS 70%.
THE OTHER QUESTION, DID THE NINE-WEEK FALL, WINTER, SPRING WINDOWS FIT YOUR PLC CYCLES? AGAIN, ABOUT A 4% INCREASE FROM LAST YEAR TO THIS YEAR.
72.5% OF STAFF SAID YES, THIS IS REALLY MEETING OUR NEED.
THEN DID THE FALL, WINTER, SPRING WINDOWS SUPPORT YOUR STUDENT GROWTH GOAL PROCESS? REMEMBER AROUND TPEP AND THE EVALUATION,
[01:25:01]
EVERY TEAM HAS A STUDENT GROWTH GOAL COMPONENT TO THEIR EVALUATION.THE NICE THING ABOUT THIS WORK IS IT'S NOT YET ANOTHER THING.
IT'S DOING BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.
I THINK BASED ON THOSE RESPONSES, THEY'RE NEARLY 80% OF STAFF ARE SAYING YES, THIS IS REALLY HELPFUL.
VERY POSITIVE. NOW, WE STARTED TO PLANT A SEED.
YOU'RE ONLY SEEING A PART OF THIS QUESTION, BUT BASICALLY WHAT WE SAID IS, LOOK, WAIVER DAYS ARE TEMPORARY.
THIS WAS NEVER INTENDED TO BE A PERMANENT PART OF OUR SCHOOL CALENDAR.
WE WOULD NEVER HAVE COME TO YOU AND SAID THAT THAT WAS OUR INTENTION.
EVENTUALLY, WE NEED TO TRANSITION OFF OF THAT.
THE QUESTION IS, WHEN DO WE DO THAT TRANSITION TO BEST SUPPORT OUR TEAMS TO BE SUCCESSFUL? WE ASKED THE QUESTION, FOR NEXT YEAR, WOULD YOUR TEAM SUPPORT EITHER CONTINUING WITH THE WAIVER DAY SCHEDULE OR DOING MORE FREQUENT TWO-HOUR LATE STARTS EVERY SIX WEEKS THAT WOULD ALIGN WITH THE SECONDARY GRADING PERIOD.
WHAT YOU SEE UP HERE IS PRETTY INTERESTING.
60% OF THE STAFF SAID, LET'S CONTINUE WAIVER DAYS, BUT NEARLY 40% OF THE STAFF SAID, YEAH, WE'RE READY TO TRANSITION TO LATE STARTS, WHICH IS A GOOD INDICATOR.
I ACTUALLY DIDN'T THINK THAT NUMBER WAS GOING TO BE AS HIGH FOR LATE STARTS, SO THAT'S ENCOURAGING.
I DON'T THINK IT'S THIS YEAR COMING UP.
WE'RE LOOKING TO MAYBE PIVOT OFF WAIVER DAYS FOR THE '25-'26 SCHOOL YEAR.
OUR PROPOSAL FOR NEXT YEAR, LET ME JUST JUMP TO THAT, LOOKS LIKE THIS.
SHELLEY AND I WORKED ON THIS THIS MORNING.
BASICALLY WHAT WE HAVE ARE, INSTEAD OF THREE PLC CYCLES, WE HAVE FOUR NEXT YEAR, BUT WE'RE STILL ONLY ASKING FOR TWO WAIVER DAYS.
YOU'LL NOTICE THE OTHER PIECE IS APRIL 9, WE WOULD ASK THAT THAT BE A TWO-HOUR LATE START TO SET UP THE FOURTH CYCLE.
PART OF THE REASON WE WANT TO DO THAT IS TO TO GIVE A TRIAL RUN TO SEE HOW THESE LATE STARTS WORK.
IS IT ENOUGH TIME? HOW DID IT GO? ARE THERE CAFETERIA ISSUES? SOME OF OUR SCHOOLS SHARE SOME LOGISTICS THAT COULD BE A CHALLENGE.
THE SCHEDULE THERE IS WE'VE GOT A FULL RELEASE WAIVER DAY PROPOSAL FOR NOVEMBER 6, WE'VE GOT A FULL RELEASE WAIVER DAY FOR JANUARY 29, AND A TWO HOUR-LATE START ON APRIL 9 WITH FOUR PLC CYCLES OR WINDOWS FOR THE '24-'25 SCHOOL YEAR? THAT'S OUR PROPOSAL.
I THINK THE TEACHERS SPOKE PRETTY CLEARLY TO US ABOUT HOW THIS IS MEETING THEIR NEEDS.
REALLY THANK YOU AGAIN FOR TWO YEARS WORTH OF GREAT WORK.
WE'RE ASKING FOR JUST ONE MORE, AND THEN WE WOULD BE ABLE TO PIVOT OFF OF SOMETHING THAT WOULDN'T BE A WAIVER, BUT MORE OF A TWO-HOUR LATE START MIXED WITH THE HOUR LATE STARTS FOR THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL YEAR.
>> I'M GUESSING THAT THE FIRST, NOT WAIVER DAY, BUT THE PLC WORK WOULD BE DONE ON THOSE DAYS BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS.
>> SORRY, MAYOR. I DIDN'T DO A GOOD JOB OF ARTICULATING THAT.
AUGUST 21 IS THE SECOND START UP DAY NEXT YEAR.
OUR START UP DAYS RUN FROM AUGUST 20 TO AUGUST 22, SO YES, WE WOULD TAKE A MORNING OF ONE OF THOSE START UP DAYS FOR TEAMS TO UNPACK THEIR ESSENTIAL STANDARD, DEVELOP THEIR COMMON ASSESSMENTS, GET EVERYTHING SET UP SO THAT THEN IT'S MORE MAINTENANCE WORK ONCE THEY'RE IN THE CYCLE ON THE LATE START WEDNESDAYS.
>> I'M IMPRESSED WITH THE DATA THAT YOU'VE GATHERED AND THE WAY YOU'RE BEING VERY SPECIFIC ABOUT THE NEEDS THAT TEACHERS HAVE AND LETTING THEM EXPRESS WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE.
ONE QUESTION I HAVE AND I KNOW THIS IS PROBABLY LOGISTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE SOME GRADE LEVELS AND SOME AREAS MAY NEED MORE OF THAT TIME THAN OTHERS.
FOR INSTANCE, LOOKING AT YOUR DATA, I WOULD SAY THAT THE PRIMARY IS A LITTLE WAYS FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD, AND ALSO HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF HIGH SCHOOL, AND A TEACHER MIGHT NEED TO BE IN TWO PLCS MIGHT LOOK A LITTLE DIFFERENT.
I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S EVEN POSSIBLE.
>> WE'VE ASKED OUR STAFF TO COMMIT TO ONE PLC PER CYCLE.
BY SHORTENING THOSE CYCLES TO SIX WEEKS AND ALIGNING THEM WITH THE GRADING PERIODS, I THINK THAT WILL BE A HUGE HELP TO OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND PARTICULARLY, OUR HIGH SCHOOL.
>> I DO THINK THAT WHEN THE SKILLS ARE DEVELOPED AND PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS, IT BECOMES MORE AUTOMATIC, AND THERE'S NOT AS NEED FOR AS LONG AS A PERIOD OF TIME.
A WHOLE WAIVER DAY FOR SOME GROUPS IS PROBABLY BECOMING, NOW WE'RE DONE WITH THAT.
WE'LL SKIP OVER AND START WORKING ON CURRICULUM AND SOME TRAINING.
WE HAVE DONE THAT WITH SOME OF THE PRIMARY TRAINING THAT WE'RE DOING.
>> THE OTHER THING I WOULD JUST SAY, IN THE CURRICULUM TRAINING SIDE, THE AFTERNOON NUMBERS WERE EVEN STRONGER THAN THE PLC MORNING.
WHEN WE ASKED THEM, WAS THE CURRICULUM UNIT TIME TO DIG INTO CURRICULUM IN THE AFTERNOON HELPFUL?
[01:30:01]
I THINK WE HAD, IT WAS LIKE 85% OF THE STAFF SAID, YES, VERY HELPFUL.THE TIME THAT WE ARE GIVING THEM TO DO SOME FRONT END UNIT PLANNING WITH THE CURRICULUM, THAT'S A WIN AS WELL.
>> WHICH FOR THE CURRICULUM THAT WE'RE ADOPTING RIGHT NOW IS GOING TO IMPORTANT FOR NEXT YEAR.
BUT I HAVE TO SAY WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING WITH SPED AND THE ESA STAFF, OBVIOUSLY, THAT HAD A HUGE IMPACT, SO BRAVO.
>> IT'S A WORK IN PROGRESS, BUT WHAT WE ARE MAKING SOME REAL INROADS AND FIGURING THIS OUT.
AS YOU KNOW, MAYOR, THIS JOURNEY IS UNIQUE TO EACH DISTRICT.
WHAT ANOTHER DISTRICT DOES TO GET TO SUCCESS WITH THIS WORK ISN'T OUR JOURNEY.
WE'RE FIGURING THAT OUT AS WE GO.
WE HAVE SOME BASIC GUIDING PRINCIPLES.
THE GOOD THING ABOUT THIS SURVEY IS THE QUESTIONS ARE SIMILAR YEAR-TO-YEAR, SO WE CAN REALLY SEE GROWTH OVER TIME, AND I THINK THAT'S BEEN VERY HELPFUL FOR US.
>> DOES THIS PLAN SEEM LIKE A DECENT [NOISE] PROPOSAL FOR US TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THIS NEXT YEAR? DO TWO WAIVER DAYS HAVE A TWO-HOUR LATE START SO THAT WE CAN GIVE STAFF AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IT MIGHT LOOK LIKE IF WE MOVE TO TWO-HOUR LATE STARTS IN THE YEAR FOLLOWING? BECAUSE WHEN THEY TAKE THE SURVEY, I THINK IT'S HARD FOR THEM TO IMAGINE WHAT TWO HOURS WILL LOOK LIKE VERSUS AN ENTIRE WAIVER DAY, BUT I THINK WE NEED THAT FEEDBACK IN ORDER TO MAKE A GOOD DECISION.
>> WELL, HOW MANY DAYS DID WE HAVE THIS YEAR?
>> THIS ADDS ESSENTIALLY AN HOUR TOTAL TO THE INSTRUCTIONAL TIME LOST.
WE STILL MADE THE INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES BY OVER 10 HOURS.
>> THESE DATES RIGHT HERE ARE ACTUALLY FOR THE 24/25?
>> THAT'S WHAT THREW ME OFF. [LAUGHTER]
>> FULL DISCLOSURE, I ACTUALLY USED THE SAME POWERPOINT SLIDES AS LAST YEAR, BUT UPDATED THEM, BUT I FORGOT. RICKY MOVE.
LUCKILY, THERE'S NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE IN HERE TO WITNESS THAT.
>> NOBODY WHO'S GOING TO MAKE FUN OF YOU.
>> I SEE IT TRAVIS OVER THERE STEWING IT.
IT'S BOILING RIGHT THERE, GOT SOMETHING COOKING.
>> I WAS JUST CURIOUS FROM A STUDENT PERSPECTIVE, DID YOU GUYS FEEL THE IMPACT OF THE DAYS MISSED? DID YOU FEEL THE IMPACT OF WHAT THE TEACHERS GAINED? YOU GUYS ARE THE ONES WHO ARE RECEIVING IT, THE BENEFITS OF THIS WORK, AND I WAS JUST CURIOUS IF YOU HAD ANY INSIGHTS ON THE PAST WAIVER DAYS.
>> WELL, FIRST OF ALL, IT WAS NICE TO HAVE A DAY OFF ON THE DAYS THAT WE DID HAVE A DAY OFF.
[LAUGHTER] I FEEL LIKE I'M ALWAYS JUST TALKING ABOUT HOW I LIKE MISSING SCHOOL, BUT THAT'S NOT WHO I AM, GUYS.
>> BUT I THINK I HEARD FROM ONE TEACHER THAT AS AN AP TEACHER, I THINK SHE WAS DOING A PLC WORK FOR HER AP CLASS, IT WAS A LITTLE DIFFICULT BECAUSE THERE WAS ONLY ONE OTHER TEACHER IN THE DISTRICT WHO TAUGHT THE SAME CLASS AS HER.
I DON'T KNOW, THERE WERE SOME INCONSISTENCIES THERE AND HOW THEY BOTH TAUGHT THEIR CLASSES.
ALSO, THAT WAS HELPFUL FOR HER BECAUSE THEN THEY COULD TOUCH BASE AND GET A LITTLE CLOSER IN HOW THEY TAUGHT THEIR AP CLASS, BUT I REMEMBER TAKING SOME TESTS FOR PHYSICS THAT ALIGNED OUR CLASS WITH OTHER CLASSES, AND I FEEL LIKE THAT HELPED IN THAT OCCASION.
I DON'T KNOW. I CAN'T SPECIFICALLY POINT TO ANY OCCASIONS WHERE PLC WORK WAS BROUGHT UP BY MY TEACHERS, BUT THAT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY WERE DOING IT WELL.
THEY WERE ACTUALLY IMPLEMENTING IT IN A WAY THAT WAS SEAMLESS IN A CLASS SETTING.
>> YEAH, EXACTLY. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
>> WELL, I WILL SAY SPECIFICALLY AT MY SCHOOL, RIVER HOMELINK, THE WHOLE PLC EXPERIENCE IS A LOT DIFFERENT.
I KNOW THAT'S A LOT DIFFERENT BECAUSE I'VE TALKED TO MY TEACHERS ABOUT IT.
ESPECIALLY SINCE MOST STUDENTS AT MY SCHOOL, THE VAST MAJORITY GO TWICE A WEEK, WE DEFINITELY DIDN'T FEEL LIKE THE WAIVER DAYS BECAUSE YOU ALREADY AREN'T EVEN GOING HALF THE TIME.
YOU DON'T REALLY FEEL THAT. FOR ALE SCHOOLS, MIGHT BE DIFFERENT FOR CAM, BUT I HAVE A FEELING THEY PROBABLY HAVE A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE
[01:35:01]
OF YOU DON'T REALLY FEEL THE LOST TIME.YOU'RE ALREADY TIGHT. OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, I BELIEVED SEPARATED INTO PLCS OR ACTUALLY K12 WHERE THEY EITHER FOCUSED ON READING OR THEY FOCUSED ON MATH.
IT WAS REALLY COOL BECAUSE I'VE TAKEN THE SAME ART CLASS FOUR TIMES.
THEN I BELIEVE, I'M NOT 100% SURE, AND I KNOW SHE WATCHES THE BOARD MEETINGS, SO MS. BURRELL WILL PROBABLY CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, I THINK SHE MIGHT HAVE BEEN IN AN ENGLISH PLC BECAUSE JUST THE WAY THAT HER CLASS IS FRAMED IS DIFFERENT AND YOU CAN TELL THAT IT HAS MORE OF THAT DIRECTED, WELL, I DON'T KNOW.
I DON'T KNOW THE WORD, BUT WHERE WE'RE HAVING INTENTIONAL REFLECTIONS AND WE'RE WRITING OUR THOUGHTS, AND WE'RE FIGURING OUT HOW TO USE ART TERMS, WHICH NEVER MAKES SENSE TO ME BECAUSE I'M NOT VERY ARTSY, AND THEN SHE'S LIKE, WELL, USE THIS.
I'M LIKE, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT IS, BUT I THINK IT'S REALLY HELPFUL, AND I ALSO THINK THAT IT MAKES THE LEARNING IN ALL OF MY CLASSROOMS A LITTLE BIT MORE COHESIVE, WHERE I'M NOT LIKE, OKAY, I'M GOING TO GO DO THIS AND I'M GOING TO GO LEARN IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WAY ABOUT A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE TWO DIFFERENT KIND OF MIND FRAME SETS IN A WAY.
THEN I FEEL LIKE PLCS MAKE IT SO THAT IT'S A LITTLE BIT EASIER FOR STUDENTS TO TRANSITION INTO EVERY CLASS, IF THAT MAKES SENSE.
AT LEAST WITH THE WAY THAT MY SCHOOL SETS IT UP WHERE TEACHERS ARE OF DIFFERENT SUBJECTS ARE IN THE SAME PLC.
>> THOSE ARE ASTUTE OBSERVATIONS BY BOTH OF YOU.
>> I'D ALSO TO SAY THAT I THINK SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME IS COHESIVE GRADING.
IT'S REALLY DEVASTATING AND IT HAS BEEN IN THE PAST TO FEEL LIKE I GOT A BAD GRADE IN THE CLASS BECAUSE OF THE TEACHER THAT I HAD AND BECAUSE OF THE WAY THAT THEY GRADED AND KNOWING THAT ME DOING THE SAME WORK IN A DIFFERENT CLASS WOULD HAVE GOTTEN ME A DIFFERENT GRADE.
I THINK THIS IS SOMETHING THAT REALLY CAN HELP A LOT OF STUDENTS AND NOT MAKE IT A LOOK OF A DRAW SITUATION FOR WHAT TEACHER YOU HAVE, FOR WHAT GRADE YOU GET, OR WHAT SPECIFIC INSTRUCTION YOU RECEIVE.
>> I THINK WE WILL ONLY GET BETTER AT THAT, SORA.
I THINK WE'RE ON THE BEGINNING CUSP OF SOME OF THOSE CONVERSATIONS, BUT I APPRECIATE.
THOSE ARE REALLY GREAT OBSERVATIONS.
JULIA, THE PIECE AROUND THE COHESIVENESS, RIVER HOMELINK REALLY EMBODIES THE IDEA OF WHAT A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY IS AS A STAFF.
THEY'VE REALLY EMBRACED THESE CONCEPTS AND FIGURED OUT FOR RIVER HOMELINK, WHAT IS THIS WORK GOING TO LOOK LIKE WITH A VARIETY OF FOLKS COMING FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND THEY'VE ALL COALESCED AROUND VERY SPECIFIC GOALS THAT CROSS ALL CLASSES? TO SEE THAT YOU WOULD USE THE WORD COHESIVE IS MUSIC TO MY EARS.
I'M SURE THE STAFF WOULD BE CHEERING BECAUSE THAT'S REALLY WHAT'S OCCURRING THERE, AND WE'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO COME AND WATCH SOME OF THE PLC WORK.
IT'S PRETTY NEAT WHAT'S HAPPENING.
>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR THOUGHTS?
>> I JUST WANT TO SAY I FULLY SUPPORT WHAT YOUR PLAN IS FOR NEXT YEAR.
>> [LAUGHTER] THAT WOULD BE NEXT YEAR.
>> I'LL GO CHANGE THAT UP [INAUDIBLE].
>> BY THE WAY. YOUR PRESENTATION WAS 13 MINUTES.
>> NO. THE TOTAL PRESENTATION WAS MUCH LONGER THAN THAT, BUT YOUR PART WAS 13 MINUTES.
JUST POINTING IT OUT. WE HAD A BET.
NEXT UP, NO REPORT FROM HR, NO REPORT FROM FINANCE, NO REPORT FROM MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS BECAUSE IF YOU LOOK AT THE AGENDA, IT IS THE KEVIN JOMA SHOW FOR NEW BUSINESS.
JUST AMANDA AND COMMUNICATIONS.
>> GOOD EVENING. JUST A COUPLE OF THINGS TO SHARE WITH YOU.
IN A PREVIOUS MEETING, I MENTIONED THAT PRAIRIE HAD RECEIVED A VERY PRESTIGIOUS AWARD AND JUST WANTED TO SHARE SOME PHOTOS FROM THE PRESENTATION OF THEIR SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED NATIONAL BANNER.
THIS IS A DESIGNATION THAT ONLY ONE OTHER SCHOOL IN SOUTH OF WASHINGTON CURRENTLY HOLDS, AND IT IS TO RECOGNIZED THAT WORK TO BRING TOGETHER STUDENTS WITH AND WITHOUT INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM AND ALL THEIR HARD WORK TO EARN THAT.
[01:40:01]
I ESPECIALLY WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO DON ECELSON SMITH, WHO'S THEIR COORDINATOR, LIAISON, AND BIGGEST CHEERLEADER FOR THESE STUDENTS.IT'S REALLY NEAT TO SEE THEM BE REWARDED IN THAT WAY.
I MENTIONED ALREADY, BUT WE HAD SOME WINNERS AT THE STATE WELDING COMPETITION.
THIS IS THE STATE SKILLS USA WELDING AND FABRICATION.
PRAIRIE WAS THE WINNER WITH THE GOLD MEDAL, AND THE STUDENTS INVOLVED ON THAT TEAM ARE GRACE AND ALLEN, KENT RUNER, AND BRODY NETO AND THEIR TEACHER IS ROB SMITH.
I HAD MENTIONED THE BATTLE GROUND TEAM AS WELL, WHICH TOOK SILVER, SO CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THEM.
THEN I ALSO HAVE A COUPLE OF STAFF AWARDS TO SHARE WITH YOU FROM THE WASHINGTON SCHOOL COUNSELOR ASSOCIATION.
DEB WOOD, ON THE LEFT FROM GLENWOOD HEIGHTS, SHE RECEIVED THE RISING STAR AWARD AND THE TRAILBLAZER AWARDS.
THERE'S A SECOND ONE HONORS TEAMS THAT ARE TAKING STEPS TO IMPLEMENT COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAMS. THEN FROM CAPTAIN STRONG PRIMARY, CHRIS LINDQUIST WAS NOMINATED FOR THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR.
CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH OF THEM.
THEN LASTLY, I JUST WANTED TO MENTION A COUPLE OF UPCOMING EVENTS, INCLUDING AN EVENT THAT THE CHIEF TOUCH DREAM TEAM STUDENTS ARE PUTTING ON ON FRIDAY.
THIS IS OPEN TO ALL BATTLE GROUND FAMILIES AND IT IS FREE, BUT THEY DO ASK THAT PEOPLE REGISTER IN ADVANCE BECAUSE SPACE IS LIMITED.
THEN THERE'S ALSO APPRENTICESHIP SIGNING DAY GOING ON MAY 16TH AND STUDENTS OR FAMILIES CAN SIGN UP FOR THAT NOW.
THEN SEVERAL OF OUR SCHOOLS ARE HOLDING PLANT SALES SOON, STARTING WITH CASEE, FOLLOWED BY PRAIRIE, AND THEN BATTLE GROUND. THANK YOU.
THAT'S IT FOR SUPERINTENDENT STAFF UPDATES.
>> THAT BRINGS US TO CITIZENS COMMENTS.
[7. Citizens' Comments]
WE GIVE EACH CITIZEN THREE MINUTES.SARAH HAS HER 32ND AND ZERO TIME LEFT WARNINGS.
WILL WE BE PUTTING IT ON THE SCREEN AS WELL? YES, WE WILL.
WE HAVE EUNICE INGERMAN SIGN UP FIRST.
IF YOU WANT TO COME TO THE PODIUM.
DANNY, THE STUDENT WHO SPOKE EARLIER, DID YOU CATCH HER NAME?
MY NAME IS EUNICE [INAUDIBLE] AND I'M A COMMUNITY MEMBER.
THE RESULTS OF THE HEALTHY YOUTH SURVEY 2023 ARE OUT.
TO QUOTE JUST A LITTLE BIT FROM THE SUMMARY REPORT THAT THEY PUT OUT, MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES AMONG 10TH GRADERS ARE IMPROVING, BUT REMAIN HIGHLY CONCERNING, ESPECIALLY FOR YOUTH WHO ALREADY FACE MORE BARRIERS TO MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT.
ACCORDING TO THE NEW DATA, DEPRESSIVE FEELINGS IN CONTEMPLATION OR PLANNING SUICIDE SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED FROM 2021-2023.
EVEN SO, 30% OF 10TH GRADERS REPORTED PERSISTENT DEPRESSIVE FEELINGS, AND NEARLY 15% REPORTED CONTEMPLATING SUICIDE.
WHILE THIS IS AN UNACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF YOUTH STRUGGLING WITH SUICIDAL THOUGHTS, IT'S ALSO THE LOWEST RATE WE'VE SEEN IN WASHINGTON IN 20 YEARS YET.
THE SAME IMPROVING TRENDS SEEN AMONG YOUTH, IN GENERAL, WERE ALSO SEEN AMONG SEXUALLY OR GENDER-DIVERSE YOUTH AND THOSE REPORTING A DISABILITY.
HOWEVER, MANY OF THESE STUDENTS STILL EXPERIENCE FAR HIGHER LEVELS OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.
DEPRESSIVE FEELINGS ARE NEARLY TWO TIMES HIGHER FOR STUDENTS WHO IDENTIFY AS FEMALE COMPARED TO MALE, MORE THAN TWO TIMES HIGHER FOR LGBTQ+ YOUTH, AND THREE TIMES HIGHER AMONG STUDENTS IDENTIFYING AS HAVING A DISABILITY.
WHAT I SAW SHOWS ABOUT 4.1% NON-CISGENDER STUDENTS, AND MORE THAN 30% NON-STRAIGHT STUDENTS, ALL COMBINED.
WE NEED TO MAKE A CONCERTED EFFORT FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AROUND LGBTQ CULTURAL COMPETENCY AND BEST PRACTICES TO HELP EVERY LGBTQ STUDENT KNOW THAT THEY BELONG JUST AS THEY ARE,
[01:45:05]
SEE THEMSELVES IN EVERY CURRICULUM, AND MAKE RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR PARENTS TO GIVE THEM THE BEST SUPPORT.THIS WOULD ALSO INCLUDE THE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY.
THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME SPEAK TO YOU AND WORKING TO HELP EVERY STUDENT FEEL INCLUDED. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU. HANNAH [INAUDIBLE] ON THE SIGN-UP.
JENNIFER [INAUDIBLE], COME TO THE PODIUM.
>> YEAH, I DON'T WANT THAT EITHER. IT'S THE ONLY ONE I GOT.
MY NAME IS JENNIFER [INAUDIBLE].
I WAS DISTURBED YESTERDAY TO HEAR ABOUT THE ARREST OF A BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER, KEVIN WEEKS ON CHARGES OF SEXUAL CORRUPTION ON A CHILD AND I'M SURE ALL OF YOU WERE DISTURBED TO HEAR THAT TOO.
I'M PLEASED THAT THE DISTRICT IS CONDUCTING AN INVESTIGATION AND HAS STATED THAT THEY WILL COOPERATE WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT AND I WOULD JUST ENCOURAGE THE DISTRICT TO BE AS TRANSPARENT WITH THE PUBLIC AS THEY POSSIBLY CAN WITH THIS CASE.
THIS UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT IS A REMINDER THAT WHEN PARENTS SEND THEIR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL, THEY ARE ENTRUSTING THE SAFETY AND WELL-BEING OF THE PEOPLE THAT THEY HOLD MOST DEAR TO THEM TO PEOPLE THAT IN REALITY, THEY KNOW LITTLE ABOUT.
I BELIEVE THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND A LITTLE BIT ABOUT GROOMING AND CHILD EXPLOITATION.
ACCORDING TO THE NATION'S LARGEST RAPE, ABUSE, AND INCEST NETWORK OR RAIN, THE STEPS OF GROOMING ARE ACCESS TO MINORS FOR VICTIM SELECTION, BUILDING TRUST IN KEEPING SECRETS FROM PARENTS, ISOLATION, DESENSITIZATION TO PHYSICAL CONTACT, AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY THROUGH DISCUSSIONS RELATED TO SEX AND AN ATTEMPT BY ABUSERS TO MAKE THEIR BEHAVIOR SEEM NATURAL.
NOW, EDUCATORS HAVE FOUR OF THESE POINTS.
THEY ARE LOOKED AT AS TRUSTED INDIVIDUALS.
THEY HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO ISOLATE STUDENTS, AND WITH THE NEW TREND THAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING WITH SEX EDUCATION AND WITH POLICY 3211, THERE IS THAT REQUEST OR THAT NOTION THAT THERE ARE THINGS THAT KIDS CAN KEEP FROM THEIR PARENTS.
A STUDY PUBLISHED BY THE US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IN 2004 FOUND THAT 10% OF K THROUGH 12 STUDENTS WILL EXPERIENCE SEXUAL MISCONDUCT AT THE HANDS OF A SCHOOL EMPLOYEE BY THE TIME THEY FINISH HIGH SCHOOL.
IN 2022, NEARLY 350 K THROUGH 12 EDUCATORS WERE ARRESTED ON CHILD SEX CRIMES, 75% OF THOSE INVOLVED ALLEGED CRIMES AGAINST STUDENTS.
IN 2005, A BATTLE GROUND TEACHER NAMED THOMAS MOODY WAS ARRESTED FOR SEX CRIMES AGAINST MINERS.
MY HUSBAND HAD MR. MOODY FOR GYM.
HE WAS NEVER COMFORTABLE WITH HIM BECAUSE HE WOULD SIT IN A CHAIR AND WATCH THE BOYS SHOWER AFTER PE.
THIS WAS IN 1982, AND FOR ALL THAT TIME, MR. MOODY WAS A PART OF THIS DISTRICT.
I HAVE COPIES OF THIS ARTICLE FROM RAIN THAT I HAVE FOR YOU AND I HAVE EXTRA COPIES FOR STAFF HERE. THANK YOU.
[01:50:05]
>> HELLO, BOARD. MY NAME IS JESSICA COLE.
I'M A RESIDENT AND I'VE HAD ALUMNI.
I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE DISTRICT AND TO AMANDA FOR HIGHLIGHTING THE DRIVE-IN MOVIE THAT'S HAPPENING ON FRIDAY AND THE CHIEF TOUCH DREAM TEAM STUDENTS HAVE BEEN PUTTING THAT TOGETHER.
IN PART WITH THE ADULTS WITH THE BATTLEGROUND PREVENTION ALLIANCE.
TAKE YOUR TICKETS WHICH ARE QUICKLY SELLING OUT.
THANK YOU FOR THE HELP. GO TO PREVENTTOGETHERBG.ORG.
IT'S FRIDAY 26TH AT 7:30 RIGHT OUT HERE.

THE MOVIE WILL START AT ABOUT 8:45 ISH AND IT'S GOING TO BE THE MOVIE SOUL THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME PRE SHOW ACTIVITIES, FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT, CONCESSIONS, AND RAFFLE GIFT BASKETS.
THE FUNDS WILL ALSO BE SUPPORTING THE BATTLEGROUND PREVENTION ALLIANCE STREAM TEAM, YOUTH LEADERSHIP FOR THE PREVENTION OF YOUTH SUBSTANCE USE AND SUPPORTING POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH.
THAT'S TOO MUCH OF A TONGUE TWISTER FOR ME.
THEN THE NEXT DAY, WE'LL BE DOING OUR SPRING DRUG TAKE BACK AT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT FROM 10:00 -2:00, AND SOME OF OUR DREAM TEAM STUDENTS FROM CHIEF, AS WELL AS TO HELP WITH THAT, AND SO WE TAKE ALL DRUGS EVEN DRUGS FOR YOUR ANIMALS, NO SHARPS.
YOU JUST DRIVE THROUGH AND DROP AND GO.
>> THANK YOU. THAT CONCLUDES CITIZENS COMMENTS FOR THE EVENING.
THAT BRINGS US FORWARD TO THE CONSENT AGENDA.
[8. Consent Agenda (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]
ON TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA, WE HAVE ITEMS A THROUGH J, WHICH INCLUDES THE APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM THE APRIL 8TH REGULAR MEETING, BUSINESS AND OPERATIONS, PERSONNEL REPORTS, STUDENT TRAVEL, FINANCIAL REPORTS, COMPLETED PROJECTS REQUESTS FOR APPROVAL, REQUESTS FOR APPROVAL FOR ASSET PRESERVATION PROGRAM, AAP, FOR THE YEARS 2023-2024.IT ALSO INCLUDES ITEMS I AND J, WHICH ARE THE SECOND READINGS FOR THE ADOPTIONS OF CURRICULUMS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE AS WELL AS HIGH SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES.
THOSE PASSED WITH ALL YES VOTES AT THE LAST MEETING, BECAUSE OF THAT, THEY'RE ALLOWED TO BE ON THE CONSENT AGENDA THIS ROUND.
IS THERE ANY ITEMS THAT THE BOARD WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS FURTHER OR POSSIBLY REMOVE FROM TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA? HEARING NONE, I WOULD.
>> I MOVE TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.
>> WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
THANK YOU. ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 4-0.
THERE IS NO OLD BUSINESS TONIGHT, SO THAT BRINGS US TO NEW BUSINESS.
[10. New Business (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]
FIRST ON THE LIST IS A REVISION OF POLICY 50-11 WITH MICHELLE REINHARDT, SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF DISTRICT STAFF PROHIBITED.WHAT I HAVE BEFORE YOU IS JUST A SLIGHT REVISION TO OUR CURRENT POLICY, WHICH IS POLICY 50-11 SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF DISTRICT STAFF PROHIBITED.
ESSENTIALLY, WE HAVE TWO DIFFERENT POLICIES.
WE HAVE 50-11 IS ADDRESSING STAFF.
32-05 ADDRESSES SEXUAL HARASSMENT WITH STUDENTS.
WHAT YOU'LL FIND HERE IS THAT THERE IS JUST A SLIGHT CHANGE, A SLIGHT REVISION TO INCLUDE IN THE EVENT THAT THIS POLICY IS NEEDED TO BE FOLLOWED THAT IT IS LOOKING AT DISTRICT EMPLOYEES.
STAFF TO STAFF OR ANYTHING THAT INVOLVES OUR DISTRICT EMPLOYEES.
ANYTHING INVOLVES A STUDENT, WHERE A STUDENT IS THE COMPLAINANT THAT WOULD GO THROUGH THE OTHER POLICY 32-05.
IT'S JUST A MINOR RECOMMENDATION, BUT IT IS CONSIDERED AN ESSENTIAL POLICY THAT NEEDS REVISION ACCORDING TO WHAT'S DONE.
>> MEMBERS THE BOARD PROOF REVISION OF POLICY 50-11 SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF DISTRICT STAFF.
[01:55:04]
>> WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR THE REVISION OF POLICY 50-11.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE?
>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 4-0.
AS ALLUDED TO EARLIER, NEXT BEGINS KEVIN SHOW.
FIRST UP, APPROVAL OF RESOLUTION B24, TO ACHIEVE PROPERTY SURPLUS.
WE CAN MAKE THIS TAKE AS LONG OR SHORT AS POSSIBLE. I'LL TRY TO BE REAL.
DETAILED ON MY COVER SHEETS TO TELL YOU WHAT THESE PROJECTS, WHAT THESE ITEMS ARE.
THIS IS A PROPERTY THAT IF YOU READ THROUGH MY COVER SHEET, IT'S A PROPERTY WE INHERITED FROM, WELL, IF YOU'VE READ IT.
BASICALLY, TATUM SCHOOL DISTRICT.
IN 1935, DEEMED THAT THEY DID NOT WANT TO USE THAT ONE ACRE PARCEL WITH A TIMBER LODGE ON IT.
SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THEY WENT TO ANOTHER SCHOOL.
WELL, I DON'T KNOW IF WE IF I GAVE YOU THE LONG ESTABLISHED CHALCHE CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT AND TATUM BUT THE BACKGROUND OF THIS GOES BACK TO 1914 ON THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
WHEN A DISTRICT FAILS AND JOINS ANOTHER DISTRICT, THAT PROPERTY BECOMES PART OF THE DISTRICT THAT IS CONTINUING.
THIS BUILDING, THE TATUM SCHOOL DISTRICT, WHEN THEY DECIDED IT WAS NO LONGER USED TO BE USED FOR SCHOOLS, GAVE A LIFE ESTATE TO THE TATUM LODGE CABIN CLUB, WHICH MEANT THAT AS LONG AS THAT CLUB WAS VIABLE, THEY WERE ABLE TO USE THAT.
BACK IN 2013, WE WERE APPROACHED THAT THE CLUB WAS NO LONGER IN EXISTENCE THAT ALL MEMBERS HAD PASSED AND THAT THE PROPERTY WAS GOING TO REVERT BACK TO US.
IT'S RIGHT UP BY IF YOU'RE FAMILIAR WITH CHALCHE PRAIRIE.
IT'S RIGHT AS YOU TURN THE 90 DEGREE TURN AND HEAD INTO THE GAS STATION THERE.
THERE'S TWO CREEKS BORDERING IT.
I HAD A APPRAISE BACK IN 2020 AND THE VALUE IS ROUGHLY 260,000.
I'VE I'VE PARKED IT TO MAKE SURE IT'S BUILDABLE.
I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE APPROVAL TO SURPLUS IT SO WE CAN SELL IT, GET SOME PROCEEDS ELIMINATE A PIECE OF PROPERTY THAT'S OF NO USE TO US AND BRINGS WITH IT SOME LIABILITY FOR HOMELESS OR INJURY.
WE DO NOT NEED THIS PROPERTY AND I'D LIKE TO SELL IT SO THAT THE MARKET CAN USE THAT PIECE.
>> IS THERE ANY DANGERS OF IT BEING DETERMINED TO BE A HISTORICAL VALUE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT THAT PREVENTS ANYTHING IN THE FUTURE ANY REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS?
IS IT IS UNREDEEMABLE. IT IS GONE.
>> WELL YOU OUTLINE THE STEPS.
IF THE BOARD WERE TO APPROVE THIS RECOMMENDATION, THEN WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
>> IN THIS, YOU'RE ALLOWING ME TO DO WHATEVER I NEED TO DO TO GET THIS FOR SALE.
THEY'LL BE AN AD IN THE PAPER THAT'LL RUN CONCURRENTLY FOR TWO WEEKS.
WE'LL HAVE A 45 DAY PERIOD COMMENT PERIOD.
IF THE PUBLIC DEEMS WE SHOULDN'T SELL THAT OR WHATEVER COMMENT PERIOD THERE IS.
THEN WE CAN SELL THE PROPERTY.
>> WHEN YOU SELL THE PROPERTY, DOES THE APPROVAL OF THAT SALE COME BACK TO THE BOARD FOR THEIR APPROVAL?
>> YES. FOR THE PURCHASE AND SALE AGREEMENT.
>> REALLY, THE RESOLUTION ONLY ALLOWS YOU TO BEGIN THAT PROCESS, GO THROUGH IT?
>> YES. THAT'LL LET ME GET THROUGH THOSE STEPS, BUT I WILL BRING A PSA TO YOU AT SOME POINT.
>> PROPERTY AND SALE AGREEMENT?
>> ONCE IT'S SOLD, WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE FUNDS, DOES IT GO BACK TO REPLENISH?
>> THOSE CAN ONLY BE USED FOR CAPITAL PROJECTS.
>> I MOVE THE BOARD APPROVE RESOLUTION B24 CHALCHE PROPERTY SURPLUS.
[02:00:03]
>> WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR.
I LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD.
HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED. MOTION PASSES FOUR TO ZERO.
>> NEXT UP, WE HAVE THE APPROVAL OF THE CONTRACT FOR DISTRICT WIDE HVAC FILTER SERVICE.
>> BACK IN 2014, AFTER DOING SOME FEASIBILITY STUDIES AND HOW MUCH TIME AND MONEY WE SPEND CHANGING FILTERS THROUGH THE DISTRICT, YOU CAN'T IMAGINE HOW MANY AIR FILTERS WE HAVE TO BE CHANGED.
IT TOOK TWO PEOPLE MOST OF THEIR JOB.
WE DETERMINED AT THAT TIME, IT WAS FAR BENEFICIAL TO HAVE OUR MAINTENANCE PEOPLE DOING MAINTENANCE INSTEAD OF CHANGING FILTERS.
THIS PROJECT THIS CONTRACT IS OF A THREE YEAR TERM, SO THAT WORKS OUT TO ABOUT JUST OVER $77,000 A YEAR FOR LABOR AND MATERIALS.
IT'S A THREE YEAR CONTRACT AND AGAIN, I'D I LOOK FOR THE BOARD TO APPROVE THIS DISTRICT WIDE HVAC FILTER SERVICE CONTRACT WITH CAMFLL USA.
>> I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVED THE DISTRICT WIDE HVAC FILTER SERVICE WITH CAMFLL USA.
WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE, ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES FOUR TO ZERO.
IT'S TOTALLY RANDOM HVAC COMMENT.
BUT I'M SITTING HERE AND IT'S REALLY WARM UP HERE, AND EVERY TIME I'M LIKE IT'S REALLY WARM, YOU ZIP UP YOUR JACKET AND I'M, HOW ARE YOU FREEZING? CAN WE CHANGE SEATS?
>> I WAS GOING TO SAY I'M NOT.
>> YEAH, MY COLLARS USUALLY UP TOO.
IT IS THIS AIR CONDITIONING UNIT ON TOP.
>> NEXT STEP, WE HAVE APPROVAL TO BID PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY THREE CLASSROOM ADDITION PROJECT.
>> I SPENT A LONG TIME GETTING THIS ONE DESIGNED.
I TURNED INTO A PRETTY COMPLEX PROJECT WHEN YOU PUT A BRAND NEW THREE CLASSROOMS INSIDE OF A 1975 COVERED PLAYGROUND.
REALLY HAPPY WITH THE ENGINEER'S ESTIMATE.
WELL, I HOPE THAT HOLDS UP TO BE AROUND ONE MILLION DOLLARS FOR THIS PROJECT.
USUALLY, I DON'T HAVE TO COME UP HERE AND ASK YOU FOR PERMISSION TO ADVERTISE TO BID BECAUSE WE UTILIZE THE SMALL WORKS ROSTER FOR EVERYTHING ALMOST EVERY PROJECT UP TO 350,000, AND I DON'T HAVE TO ADVERTISE A LOT.
WE USE OUR SMALL WORKS ROSTER.
BUT ON PROJECTS OF THIS SIZE OVER 350 MILLION, I NEED TO GET PERMISSION FROM THE BOARD TO ADVERTISE FOR BID.
THAT BID WILL BE ADVERTISED FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND THEN WE'LL HAVE A COUPLE OF WEEKS TO BID THE PROJECT.
MY INTENT IS TO HAVE THIS FULLY READY FOR OCCUPANCY ON THE FIRST DAY OF NEXT SCHOOL YEAR, AND THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED THROUGH IMPACT FEES.
>> I WAS GOING TO ASK HOW MANY STUDENTS WILL THIS ACCOMMODATE?
>> THAT'S A BIG DEAL THERE. YEAH. PLEASANT VALLEY 90 PRIMARY IS COMPLETELY OUT OF CLASSROOM SPACE.
WE ESTIMATE THAT IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD, WE'RE GOING TO SEE THE GROWTH COME IN AT THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS FIRST, JUST OUR ENROLLMENT STUDIES HAVE SHOWN AND THEY'RE OUT OF ROOM.
I'M APPRECIATIVE OF KEVIN BECAUSE HE'S INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE AND TO BE ABLE TO USE THIS SPACE THAT IS CURRENTLY NOT BEING USED TO BE A BIG GAIN FOR US AT THE SCHOOL. WE'RE ACTUALLY GOING TO ADD.
>> TTK WHICH IS REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE HAVE NO PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS ON THAT SITE.
MOST OF OUR SITES HAVE PRESCHOOL OR SOME VERSION THEREOF, AND WE DON'T HAVE ANY OF THAT BECAUSE OF SPACE. THIS IS A HUGE.
>> ONE OF THOSE CLASSROOMS WILL BE A TTK CLASSROOM.
>> IT IS SUCH A CRAMPED SITE FOR MY PRIMARY SCHOOLS.
>> I WAS JUST ASK IF THERE WAS CAPACITY FOR MORE THAN THREE CLASSROOMS. WE HAVE MORE THAN THREE THOUGH. YEAH.
>> THEY'RE GOING TO BE OUT IN THE FIELD, AND THAT'S A LONG WALK.
B TO THE CAMPUSES WICKED TYPE.
>> BECAUSE EVERYTHING'S AT THE FRONT.
>> WISH WE HAD AN EASY SOLUTION, BUT I DO NOT.
[02:05:03]
>> I'LL FIGURE SOMETHING OUT THE NEXT TIME WE NEED ROOMS.
>> WE DOES. THE JOB IS EASY, ANYONE COULD DO IT.
>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD?
>> I MOVED THE BOARD APPROVED THE PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY THREE CLASSROOM ADDITION PROJECT.
>> CAN WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR? TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE? ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
NEXT, WE HAVE THE APPROVAL OF EASEMENTS FOR THE CITY OF BATTLEGROUND AT THE CAM ACADEMY CAMPUS.
>> YOU'VE DONE THIS MANY TIMES BEFORE, WHEN WE PUT IN NEW WATER LINES, WHERE WE PUT IN NEW SEWER LINES, POWER LINES, ANYTHING UNDERGROUND.
WE GRANT EASEMENTS TO WHATEVER UTILITY IS SERVING AT TO GIVE THEM ACCESS FOR REPAIRS, PLETHORA, REPLACEMENT, CONSTRUCTION.
DOESN'T AFFECT WELL, IT DOES AFFECT OUR USE OF THE CAMPUS IN THAT WE CAN'T JUST GO BUILD A BUILDING OVER THE TOP OF A UTILITY, NOR WOULD WE NORMALLY WANT TO DO THAT.
I NEED TO DO IT IN FRONT OF THE BOARD BECAUSE IT'S A ACTUAL PROPERTY TRANSACTION.
IF YOU'VE READ THROUGH THIS, IT'S FOR THE WATER WATER EASEMENT TO THE CITY OF BATTLE GROUND AS WELL AS THE STORMWATER COVENANT TO THE CITY OF BATTLE GROUND FOR ACCESS OF THE STORM WATER CONTROL AND THAT TREATMENT FACILITY POND BETWEEN CAM AND THE BASEBALL FIELDS.
I JUST NEED TO DO IT IN FRONT OF THE BOARD.
>> ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? NO. I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE WATER AND STORM WATER COVENANT, EASEMENTS FOR CAM ACADEMY, CAMPUS, AS DESCRIBED IN EXHIBITS A AND B, AND AUTHORIZE THE SUPERINTENDENT DESIGNEE TO SIGN THE AGREEMENTS ON BEHALF OF THE DISTRICT.
WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THE ADVISORY VOTE.
>> ANY ADDITIONAL COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED. MOTION PASSES 4-0.
LAST ON THE LIST TONIGHT, WE HAVE THE APPROVAL OF THE BOUNDARY LINE ADJUSTMENT FOR THE CITY OF BATTLEGROUND AT THE CAM ACADEMY CAMPUS.
>> THANK YOU. OVER MANY, MANY DECADES THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS BEEN IN CITY OF BATTLE GROUND.
THIS ENTIRE CAMPUS IS MADE UP OF OVER ALMOST EXACTLY 100 ACRES AND IT'S MULTIPLE PARCELS THAT WE HAVE ACQUIRED OVER TIME.
WHEN WE STARTED TO LAY OUT OUR NEW CAMP CAMPUS, WE FOUND THAT WE SAT ON THREE SEPARATE PARCELS AND YOU CAN'T DO THAT.
WHEN YOU'RE DONE, YOU DO ALL I'M DOING, WE HAVEN'T CHANGED THE NUMBER OF LOTS, WE'VE JUST SHUFFLED WHERE THEY ARE.
THE DELINEATION OF THEM SO THAT THE CAMP SITS ON ITS OWN PARCEL AND HAS A 60 FOOT EASEMENT, WHICH IS THE ROAD COMING FROM MAIN STREET DICK TIRES.
THERE'S AN EASEMENT THERE, AND WHEN YOU CREATE A SEPARATE PARCEL, YOU MUST HAVE AN EASEMENT FOR PUBLIC ACCESS.
ONE IS LIKE I SAY, UP THE ROAD THAT SERVES THE LEWISVILLE CAMPUS, AND THE OTHER ONE IS A THEORETICAL EASEMENT, IF WE WERE TO DECIDE TO SELL OUR ADJUSTED PARCEL ONE ON ITS OWN, THAT WOULD PROVIDE AN EASEMENT OFF OF NINTH STREET, THAT'S THE CLOSEST PUBLIC ACCESS.
YOU CAN'T CREATE A PARCEL WITHOUT PUBLIC ACCESS.
DOESN'T AFFECT US IN ANY WAY, IF WE NEVER SELL IT.
BUT THERE COULD BE ANOTHER BOUNDARY LINE ADJUSTMENT.
IF WE HAPPEN TO USE IT, WE DON'T NEED TO USE THAT PUBLIC ACCESS.
BUT WHEN YOU CREATE A PARCEL, A SEPARATE PARCEL, YOU NEED TO HAVE AN ACCESS TO PUBLIC INGRESS AND EGRESS.
I ALREADY COVERS OVER AN EASEMENT THAT THE CITY OWNS A PORTION OF ON PARCEL.
WELL, IT'S NOT NAMED HERE, BUT THAT STUB OFF OF NINTH STREET IS THE CLOSEST PUBLIC ROAD WHERE THERE COULD BE A THEORETICAL ACCESS.
>> ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD?
>> TED AND DENNY LOOK VERY INTENSELY STUDYING WHAT'S GOING ON OVER THERE. JUST WAIT A SECOND.
[02:10:04]
>> I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE A BOUNDARY LINE ADJUSTMENT FOR DISTRICT OWNED PARCELS AS DESCRIBED IN EXHIBIT A, B, C AND D, AND AUTHORIZES THE SUPERINTENDENT OR A DESIGNEE TO SIGN THE AGREEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE DISTRICT.
CAN WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR.
I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.
ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.
>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 4-0.
>> TOO BAD KENNEDY LEFT. I WANTED TO LET HIM KNOW.
I DIDN'T TAKE ME 13 MINUTES FOR ALL OF THOSE [LAUGHTER].
>> FIRST ATTORNEY [INAUDIBLE].
>> THAT BRINGS US TO FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS AND BOARD EVENTS.
[11. Future Agenda Items and Board Events]
I WAS LOOKING AT THIS A LITTLE BIT.AS I WAS PREPPING FOR THIS MEETING, WE DO HAVE BACK IN 2023.
HANG ON JUST A SECOND. WE'RE MOVING TO THE RIGHT YEAR.
WE HAVE UPCOMING, LIKE I SAID, WE HAVE A TOUR TOMORROW, THE AUCTION.
THE PRIOR AUCTION IS THIS WEEKEND SATURDAY.
FOUR OF US HAVE RESPONDED FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T, IF YOU COULD GIVE THAT RESPONSE SO THAT LISA CAN WORK WITH THAT, ONCE WE GOT AN UPDATE ON THE MILITARY CEREMONY, IT IS NOW MAY 8TH.
THE APPRENTICESHIP SIGNING IS MAY 16TH.
I'M JUST WANTING TO SHARE THESE DATES BECAUSE THIS NEXT MONTH AND A HALF GETS SUPER BUSY.
PASS AND REVIEW JUNE 1ST, AND THEN GRADUATIONS, GRADUATIONS, GRADUATIONS. IN ADDITION.
>> DO HAVE AN EXTRA GRADUATION THIS YEAR?
I ALSO JUST REACHED OUT, AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, I WAS WORKING WITH LISA ON SOME DATES BECAUSE THERE'S OTHER THINGS THAT COME UP.
IN ADDITION, WE HAVE OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE.
WE WILL HAVE OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE INTERVIEWS COMING UP THAT WE'VE PROBABLY POTENTIALLY AT THE MAY 28TH MEETING AS A WORK SESSION.
I JUST WANT TO THROW THAT OUT THERE THAT THESE THINGS ARE COMING.
LOTS OF PLANT SALES AS WE SAW EARLIER FROM AMANDA'S REPORT, BOARD TOUR STUDENT REP INTERVIEWS, AND THEN WHEN WE WRAP ALL OF THAT UP, WE HAVE A POTENTIAL FOR I DID ASK ABOUT HAVING THE STATE WINNERS COME TO ONE OF OUR MEETINGS, AND I KNOW LISA WAS WORKING ON THAT REACHING OUT TO THE AD.
>> WE HAVE TO BE THE FIRST MEETING OF MAY.
I DON'T KNOW THAT WE'RE GOING TO GET THE STATE ATHLETES, BUT WE'RE GOING TO GET THE ATHLETES WHO HAVE SIGNED. TAP.
>> THEN ONCE WE GET THROUGH THE SCHOOL YEAR AND THAT ENDS, WE TYPICALLY HAVE A BOARD RETREAT IN LATE JUNE OR JULY. JUST THROWING.
>> WE'RE LOOKING AT LATE JULY.
>> IT'S PACKED. WE'RE LOOKING AT TRYING TO LOOK AT THE WEEK OF THE 22ND BECAUSE WE HAVE A BOARD MEETING ON THE 22ND.
DOING THAT SAME WEEK SO THAT IT DOESN'T INTERFERE WITH PEOPLE'S VACATIONS AND THOSE THINGS.
>> YEAH. JUST THROWING IT OUT THERE FOR EVERYBODY'S RADAR BECAUSE IT IS COMP IT'LL BE, STARTING THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR AND THEN OFF TO WASA CONFERENCE.
WHICH IS ALSO YOU ALL SHOULD HAVE JUST RECEIVED AN INVITE EARLIER FROM LISA TO AT LEAST GET THE TENTATIVE DATES ON YOUR CALENDAR.
JUST A REMINDER FOR EVERYBODY TO PLEASE LOOK AT THIS THE UPCOMING SCHEDULED EVENTS.
IF YOU DON'T SEE THAT YOU'VE ANSWERED AND YOU NEED TO, PLEASE DO.
[02:15:01]
I JUST HELPS US ALL PLAN.A REMINDER THAT JUNE 10TH IS THE EARLY ONE BECAUSE SHE HAD THE GRADUATION CAM'S GRADUATION AFTER? IT'S A BOARD MEETING AS EARLY.
LUISA WILL SEND OUT A DOLE POLE FOR THE BOARD RETREAT, AND THEN SHE'S ALSO GOING TO BE SENDING OUT THE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS FOR THE STUDENT REP. YOU CAN REVIEW THOSE.
IF THEY'RE ALL GOOD, JUST SAY ALL GOOD.
BUT IF YOU WANT ANY CHANGES, WE'LL GET THOSE READY TO GO SO THAT WHEN WE GET THOSE NAMES NEXT WEEK, WE CAN START GETTING THEIR MATERIALS PULLED TOGETHER FOR THE WORK SESSION ON THE 28TH.
>> THAT WORK SESSION START AT 4430, DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF INTERVIEWS WE HAVE TO DO.
I JUST REALLY WANTED TO MAKE IT AN EMPHASIS TONIGHT FOR EVERYBODY TO BE WATCHING FOR THAT STUFF AND TO MAKE SURE YOU'RE GETTING YOUR CALENDARS UPDATED AND ACCEPTING, DECLINING OR OTHERWISE, AND LETTING EVERYBODY KNOW YOUR AVAILABILITY.
ANYTHING I MISSED THAT NEEDS TO BE MENTIONED.
>> THEN WE ADJOURN AT 8:16. THANK YOU, EVERYONE.
