[5. Communications]

I BELIEVE BRYNN [INAUDIBLE], IF I SAID THAT CORRECTLY, IS HERE TO SHARE A STORY WITH US.

HI, MY NAME IS BRYN [INAUDIBLE] AND I AM A FOURTH GRADER AT RIVER HOMELINK AND MISS REDMOND AND MISS CAMPBELL'S CLASSLINK CLASS.

I AM HERE TONIGHT TO TELL YOU ABOUT AN ESSAY I WROTE.

LAST SEPTEMBER, I ENTERED A NATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST ABOUT MY RESCUE BULLDOG, BIGGIE.

IT WAS SPONSORED BY PETCO LOVE FOUNDATION AND SKECHERS SHOES.

I DIDN'T THINK I WAS GOING TO WIN ANYTHING BECAUSE I WAS A KID AND ADULTS COULD ENTER THIS CONTEST.

THERE ARE ABOUT 3000 ENTRIES THIS YEAR.

IN JANUARY, MY MOM GOT A CALL FROM PETCO ASKING US TO COME TO A PRESS CONFERENCE AND THAT I WAS ACTUALLY A FINALIST.

THEY COULDN'T TELL US ANY OTHER INFORMATION THOUGH, SO WE WENT TO THE EVENT AND TOOK BIGGIE WITH US, AND IT WAS ALL SET UP AND DECORATED WITH LOTS OF PEOPLE AND PHOTOGRAPHERS AND VIDEO PEOPLE. THEY HAD A BIG CHECK HIDDEN AND COVERED UP.

WHEN THEY WENT LIVE STREAMING.

THEY UNCOVERED THE CHECK AND HAD WON THE GRAND PRIZE FOR THE ENTIRE COMPETITION.

IT WAS $100,000 THAT WOULD BE SENT TO THE RESCUE BIGGIE CAME FROM.

I FELT AWESOME THAT I HAD WON THE GIANT PRIZE AMOUNT.

I WAS SHOCKED, ACTUALLY, AS A SURPRISE.

PETCO AND SKECHERS ALSO GAVE ME SOME PRIZES I WASN'T EXPECTING.

I GOT A $1,000 GIFT CARD TO PETCO AND A $600 GIFT CARD TO YUMMERS PET TREATS AND THESE REALLY COOL SKECHERS SHOES.

IT WAS PRETTY AWESOME.

IT WAS A PRETTY AWESOME EXPERIENCE.

AFTER THE AWARDS, I GOT TO TELL ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND TEACHERS.

EVERYONE HAS BEEN REALLY EXCITED FOR ME AND THE RESCUE.

I GOT TO BE INTERVIEWED FOR THE LOCAL NEWSPAPERS AND EVEN AND WE WERE EVEN FEATURED BY PEOPLE MAGAZINE.

IT IS KIND OF COOL AND FUNNY TO SEE OUR PICTURES AND STORIES ONLINE AND IN NEWSPAPER STORIES.

I TOLD BIGGIE HE WAS FAMOUS NOW AND HAD TO BEHAVE.

[CHUCKLING]. I'M REALLY THANKFUL I HAVE SUCH GREAT TEACHERS AT RIVER HOMELINK LIKE MISS REDMOND AND MISS CAMPBELL.

THEY TAUGHT ME HOW TO WRITE REALLY DETAILED NARRATIVES AND TO DO LOTS OF DRAFTS.

FIRST, I LOVE RIVER HOMELINK AND AM SO GLAD BATTLE GROUND SCHOOLS HAS THIS PROGRAM.

I LET STUDENTS LIKE ME TRY REALLY HARD AT THINGS WE LIKE TO DO AND TEACH, AND THE TEACHERS ARE AWESOME.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME TONIGHT.

THIS IS A VERY NEAT EXPERIENCE TOO.

I BROUGHT MY ESSAY AND CAN ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THE BOARD MIGHT HAVE.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

DID YOU HAPPEN TO BRING A PICTURE OF BIGGIE? YES. OH, GOOD.

OH. THAT'S ADORABLE.

HOW OLD WAS BIGGIE WHEN YOU RESCUED HIM?

[00:05:01]

HE WAS FOUR. OH, WOW.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD BIGGIE NOW? TWO YEARS. TWO YEARS.

WOW, AND HE CAME FROM TEXAS? YES. WOW. HOW DID YOU GET HIM OVER HERE? THEY HAVE A RESCUE.

THEY HAVE A BIG SEMI TRUCK THAT HAS A BUNCH OF PLACES WHERE THEY CAN KEEP DOGS IN IT, AND THEY BRING DOGS UP ALL THE WAY FROM THE WEST COAST AND EAST COAST.

NICE. WOW. YEAH.

SO YOU AND I HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON BECAUSE I ALSO HAVE A RESCUE FROM THREE LITTLE PITTIES RESCUE, AND I WAS SO INSPIRED BY YOUR STORY.

IT MADE MY HEART VERY HAPPY, BUT I DON'T HAVE A BULLDOG, SO, BUT SHE'S PRETTY CUTE, AND SHE CAME FROM NORTH DAKOTA, SO IT IS REALLY COOL HOW THEY SHIP THEM.

BRYN, HOW LONG WAS YOUR ESSAY? IT'S ONE TWO, THREE FOUR, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, SEVEN PARAGRAPHS.

DO YOU WANT TO READ IT? YEAH.

I WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO READ IT FOR US.

IS THAT OKAY? YEAH.

MY NAME IS BRYN.

MY NAME IS BRYN AND I AM ALMOST TEN YEARS OLD.

BIGGIE IS ONE OF MY RESCUE BULLDOGS AND ALSO MY BFF.

HE CAME FROM TEXAS TO US ON A BIG RESCUE TRUCK.

WHEN HE GOT HERE HE WAS REALLY SICK AND SKINNY.

HE GOT HE NEEDED TWO SURGERIES AND LOTS OF TREATS.

I WAS WORRIED HE WAS SO SICK HE WAS GOING TO DIE.

HE DIDN'T KNOW I WAS GOING TO LOVE HIM NO MATTER WHAT.

LUCKILY, WITH A LOT OF HARD WORK, WE HEALED HIM.

BIGGIE IS NOW BASICALLY AN 80 POUND POTATO ON LEGS, FOR REAL.

[CHUCKLING]. THE PAST TWO YEARS I HAVE HELPED TRAIN HIM AND HEAL HIS SICKNESSES AND TEACH HIM HOW TO BE GENTLE AND CUDDLE.

I HAVE TAUGHT HIM SIT, STAY GENTLE, OFF AND MORE.

I WOULD SAY HE IS A SIX OUT OF TEN IN LISTENING.

THAT'S REALLY AMAZING FOR A BULLDOG WHO HAD NEVER LIVED WITH A FAMILY.

SO HE'S BASICALLY A BULLDOG GENIUS.

[CHUCKLING]. WHEN HE CAME TO LIVE AT MY HOUSE, MY MOM CALLED HIM A FERAL CHAOS MACHINE.

[CHUCKLING]. HE JUST MADE ME LAUGH WHEN HE JUMPED ON TABLES AND DROOLED.

I KNEW RIGHT AWAY HE LOVED ME MOST BECAUSE HE ACTUALLY LISTENED TO ME.

BIGGIE CAN BE NAUGHTY AND SILLY, BUT HE ALWAYS KNOWS WHEN I CAN USE CUDDLES AND LAUGHS.

SOMETIMES HE STEALS MY LUNCH OR UNWINDS A WHOLE ROLL OF TOILET PAPER JUST FOR FUN.

WE SPEND A LOT OF TIME READING TOGETHER AND HE LETS ME USE HIM AS A PILLOW.

HE LIKES TO PUT HIS PAWS ON MY HEAD WHEN WE ARE SITTING ON THE COUCH LIKE HE IS PETTING ME.

WE GO FOR WALKS EVERY DAY AND HE HELPS ME WITH MY MATH HOMEWORK.

HE'S NOT GOOD AT HOMEWORK; HE LIKES TO EAT IT INSTEAD.

HE LEARNED TO CHEW ON MY FEET AND TELL ME WHEN HE IS BORED, OR ONCE THE FIREPLACE TURNED ON TO ROAST HIS TUSH.

LIKE I SAID EARLIER, HE'S A BULLDOG.

GENIUS. MY FRIENDS THINK BIGGIE IS LIKE A CARTOON CHARACTER.

HE IS REALLY GENTLE WITH ALL KIDS AND MAKES SURE HE IS ALWAYS AROUND US.

TIMES HE WILL LAY ON YOU IF HE KNOWS YOU NEED A FRIEND.

YOU JUST HAVE TO TELL HIM HE'S HEAVY.

IF HE CLIMBS ON YOUR LAP, HE IS BASICALLY LIKE VELCRO.

MY MOM SAYS WE TRIP OVER HIM A LOT BECAUSE HE LIKES TO SLEEP ON YOUR FEET.

WE'VE HAD BIGGIE IN OUR FAMILY FOR TWO YEARS NOW.

HE HAS TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE REALLY PATIENT, LIKE REALLY, REALLY, REALLY PATIENT.

I LEARNED HOW TO TEACH DOGS OBEDIENCE SKILLS AND TRICKS BECAUSE OF HIM.

HE'S ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS.

I CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER WHAT THE HOUSE WAS LIKE BEFORE BIGGIE ARRIVED.

I LOVE HIM TO THE MOON.

OH, THAT IS FANTASTIC! REALLY GOOD. [APPLAUSE] NO WONDER YOU.

YOU WON. THAT'S.

THAT'S INCREDIBLE. THAT IS GREAT.

VERY GREAT. YEAH, YEAH.

THANK YOU.

BRYN, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR COMING AND SHARING WITH US TODAY.

YOU WERE WONDERFUL.

I THINK YOU DESERVE ANOTHER HAND.

BRYN'S MOM, THANK YOU FOR BRINGING HER HERE TO SHARE WITH US.

YEAH. ABSOLUTELY.

OUTSTANDING. BRYN WAS THE FEATURED HIGHLIGHT ON THE PODCAST THAT WE DID LAST WEEK.

SO IF YOU WANT TO HEAR MORE FROM BRYN, YOU CAN LISTEN TO THE PODCAST.

I'M ON THERE TOO, BUT I KNOW WHERE I STAND [CHUCKLING] JUST SO WE KNOW I'M CLEAR.

THAT WAS FANTASTIC.

THAT WAS GREAT. THAT MADE ME MADE ME REALLY HAPPY, BRYN.

YEAH. I THINK WE HAVE A STUDENT FROM THE BATTLE GROUND VIRTUAL ACADEMY HERE.

I'M NOT ONE OF THE STUDENTS, AND AFTER THAT THE MIC DROP, WE JUST NEED TO GO, RIGHT.

[CHUCKLING] THAT WAS AMAZING.

SO WE'RE HERE TONIGHT.

JUST. WE HAVE FOUR REPRESENTATIVES WOULD NORMALLY BE HERE.

I JUST WANTED TO SET THIS UP A LITTLE BIT FOR [INAUDIBLE].

WE HAVE FOUR REPRESENTATIVES.

LAST TIME WE HAD SOME PEOPLE TALK.

TWO OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS WERE UNAVAILABLE.

THE THIRD ONE PLAYS SPORTS [INAUDIBLE] WAS UNAVAILABLE TONIGHT.

SO THIS YOUNG MAN WAS NOT HERE LAST TIME.

SO THIS IS PAYBACK, AND I WON'T STEAL YOUR THUNDER.

I'LL LET YOU TELL THEM WHERE THEY WERE AT.

SO I JUST WANTED TO SET THE STAGE FOR HIM WHERE HE WAS, WHY HE WASN'T HERE LAST TIME.

SO IT'S ALL YOURS.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MR. STANFIELD.

ALL RIGHT, WELL, THANKS FOR BEING HERE, BY THE WAY.

[00:10:01]

YOU'RE WELCOME. SO, TO START OFF FOR.

OOPS. SORRY ABOUT THIS.

HOLD ON. THERE WE GO.

TO START OFF FOR INTRODUCTIONS.

MY NAME IS [INAUDIBLE].

I'M A JUNIOR AT BATTLE GROUND VIRTUAL ACADEMY AND ALSO A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE, AND I WANT TO SORT OF TALK ABOUT MY EXPERIENCES I'VE HAD WITH ONLINE LEARNING, HOW SORT OF MISCONCEPTIONS PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE, AND JUST HOW OVERALL ONLINE LEARNING HAS KIND OF BENEFITED ME, BUT TO START, I'M GOING TO GO BACK IN TIME A LITTLE BIT TO MIDDLE SCHOOL.

WHEN I WAS DOING IN-PERSON LEARNING AT CAM ACADEMY AND WITH MY BEAUTIFUL MOTHERS OVER THERE BEING BUSINESS WOMEN, WE HAD A LOT OF SPONTANEOUS LAST MINUTE BUSINESS TRIPS WE HAD TO GO TO AND IN MIDDLE SCHOOL IN PARTICULAR, I HAD TO GO TO ONE IN GANSU, CHINA FOR A BUSINESS CONVENTION.

WOW, AND WITH BEING IN CHINA ACROSS THE PACIFIC, IT'S A LITTLE HARD TO DO IN-PERSON LEARNING.

SO I HAD TO CONVINCE MY TEACHERS TO LET ME TAKE MY TEXTBOOKS, MY NOTEBOOKS, WORKSHEETS, ANYTHING I MIGHT NEED FOR SCHOOLING AND SOUNDS GREAT, BUT I HAD TO LUG AROUND AROUND 15 POUNDS OF ADDITIONAL SCHOOLWORK ACROSS THE OCEAN.

IT JUST WASN'T FUN, BUT I WENT THROUGH.

I DID MY SCHOOLWORK IN CHINA REGULARLY.

ASSIGNMENTS WOULD BE ASSIGNED IN CLASS EARLY IN THE MORNING.

THEY'D BE DUE NEXT MORNING, BUT WITH ME BEING 16 HOURS AHEAD, ASSIGNMENTS WOULD BE STARTED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, SOMETIMES AROUND TWO IN THE MORNING, AND THEN DO THE VERY NEXT MORNING.

SO I WOULD HAVE TO STAY UP VERY LATE AT NIGHT.

I WOULD HAVE TO DO ASSIGNMENTS SUPER LATE, BUT AFTER TWO WEEKS OF DOING THAT, I CAME BACK WITH GIANT STACKS OF WORKSHEETS FOR ALL MY TEACHERS, SLAMMED IT ON THEIR DESK, AND RETURNED HOME HAPPY THEY WEREN'T, BUT WHEN COVID-19 HIT BACK IN 2020, WE ALL SHIFTED TO ONLINE THOSE SORT OF AWKWARD ZOOM CALLS, AND WE'RE ALL FAMILIAR WITH AND WE SORT OF DID LOOKING INTO ONLINE ME AND MY FAMILY, AND WE DISCOVERED BATTLE GROUND VIRTUAL ACADEMY, WHICH IS WHERE I'VE SORT OF ENDED UP TODAY AND I'D LIKE TO CONTRAST MY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH MY NEW FOUND EXPERIENCE IN ONLINE SCHOOL TODAY WHICH RECENTLY THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT IS IN OCTOBER OF LAST YEAR WHEN I WENT TO A MARRIAGE IN MOROCCO.

INSTEAD OF CARRYING AROUND ALL MY TEXTBOOKS, ALL MY NOTES AND EVERYTHING, 15 POUNDS OF JUNK, I JUST HAD MY LAPTOP, A FEW SHEETS OF PAPER, AND THAT'S ALL I NEEDED, AND SINCE I COULD WORK WHENEVER I WANTED TO, WHENEVER I NEEDED TO, ALL I DID WAS PICK SOME TIMES THAT I NEEDED, SET SOME TIME OUT OF MY DAY WORK WHENEVER I NEEDED, AND I WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE OUT THROUGHOUT MY COURSES.

I WAS ABLE TO WORK AT MY OWN PACE.

I WAS ABLE TO TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS AS THEY WERE ASSIGNED, AND I WAS ABLE TO COME BACK AFTER A FULL ONE MONTH TRIP, FULLY READY FOR FINALS, NO WORK BEHIND AND WITHOUT TROUBLING MY TEACHERS OR MYSELF UNNECESSARILY.

SO I JUST LIKE TO REITERATE HOW ONLINE SCHOOLING HAS BEEN SUCH A CONVENIENCE AND A LIFESAVER FOR MY TRAVELING FAMILY, AND I JUST WANT MY MAIN POINT BEING THAT ONLINE LEARNING IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO BE LAZY, BUT IT'S ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITIES IT PROVIDES TO BE PROACTIVE.

IT'S VERY CONVENIENT, IT'S FLEXIBLE, AND IT GIVES THE STUDENT A LOT OF FREEDOM IN A MODERN ERA.

THAT'S ALL FANTASTIC.

THAT'S GREAT. YEAH. THANK YOU.

WELL DONE. STAY THERE, WE HAVE QUESTIONS FOR YOU.

WHAT THAT? I SAID STAY THERE; WE HAVE QUESTIONS FOR YOU.

WHICH, AS MR. STANFIELD SAID, THAT TRIP TO MOROCCO MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN THE REASON WHY I WASN'T HERE LAST TIME.

SORRY. I'D LOVE TO HEAR ONE OF THE AREAS OF EMPHASIS THAT YOU KIND OF FEEL LIKE YOU GREW IN THE MOST, THAT YOU ENJOYED THE MOST IN YOUR ONLINE LEARNING.

RIGHT. SO I FEEL LIKE IT WAS MAINLY THE FREEDOM.

A LOT OF COURSES I'VE HAD OVER THE YEARS HAVE BEEN EITHER VERY SLOW OR VERY FAST, WHETHER IT BE ASSIGNMENT AFTER ESSAY AFTER ASSIGNMENT, AFTER ANOTHER ESSAY, AND THIS SORT OF FREEDOM THAT I'VE HAD WITH ONLINE LEARNING TO PICK MY SCHEDULE, PICK WHAT I WANT TO DO FOR THE DAY IS SORT OF THE MAIN EMPHASIS, AND THE MAIN THING I ENJOY ABOUT ONLINE LEARNING. THANK YOU.

OTHER QUESTIONS. HOW HAVE YOU FOUND THE RIGOR OF ONLINE CLASSES COMPARED? I MEAN, CAM HAS A HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR THE STUDENTS THAT GO THERE.

RIGHT. WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND IN TERMS OF THE ONLINE WORK IN TERMS OF I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR FUTURE PLANS ARE, BUT HOW DOES IT FIT IN, AND YOU KNOW, TALK ABOUT THAT A LITTLE BIT.

WELL, PERSONALLY I AM AN OVERACHIEVER, SO I LIKE TO OVERWORK MYSELF.

I'VE TAKEN ADDITIONAL COURSES OVER THE YEAR TO WITH MY GOAL OF GRADUATING EARLY THIS YEAR, HOPEFULLY, BUT IN REGARDS TO GENERAL COURSEWORK, I'D SAY IT'S DEFINITELY LIGHTER THAN CAM, BUT IT'S NOT SO MUCH WHERE I CAN SIT BACK AND IGNORE IT FOR THREE WEEKS AND BE FINE.

RIGHT. IT IS ENOUGH TO KEEP ME MOTIVATED AND MAINTAINING AND BEING CONSISTENT ON IT.

[00:15:06]

THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR. YEAH.

IS YOUR PLAN TO WHAT'S YOUR PLAN AFTER GRADUATION? STRAIGHT INTO COLLEGE. STRAIGHT INTO COLLEGE, MORE AND MORE WORK, AND YOU THINK THAT THE ONLINE CLASSES ARE PREPARING YOU FOR COLLEGE? YOU'LL BE READY. CORRECT, YEAH.

THAT'S FANTASTIC.

YEAH. HOW MANY COURSES DO YOU TAKE AT ANY GIVEN TIME? ON AVERAGE IT'S ABOUT, REGULARLY, IT'S THE SAME AS REGULAR HIGH SCHOOLS AROUND SIX COURSES PER SEMESTER.

SO THAT MANY. YEAH, BUT PERSONALLY I'VE TAKEN 15 COURSES THIS YEAR IN TOTAL ALONG WITH LAST YEAR AS WELL BECAUSE I'M ON OR I'M ASPIRING TO GRADUATE EARLY.

YEAH. I WAS GOING TO SAY 15 WILL GET YOU GET YOU THROUGH.

THAT'S SEVEN CREDITS ALREADY, RIGHT? SO YEAH, I'VE BEEN TAKING AROUND SEVEN AND A HALF.

I'VE BEEN FINISHING COURSES EARLY.

THAT SORT OF FREEDOM I WAS DISCUSSING EARLIER LET'S ME GO AHEAD OF TIME AND I CAN ACTUALLY FINISH COURSES MONTHS AHEAD, WHICH IS WHAT ALLOWS ME TO START NEW COURSES AND THEN CONTINUE THROUGH THOSE AND ALLOWS ME TO TAKE MORE COURSES PER SEMESTER.

OBVIOUSLY, YOU'RE STAYING INVOLVED.

I MEAN, YOU'RE REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE SCHOOL AND DOING THOSE KINDS OF THINGS.

SO GOOD FOR YOU. YEAH, I'M GLAD IT WORKS FOR YOU.

THAT'S FANTASTIC. THANK YOU.

OTHER QUESTIONS. THANK YOU.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. YEAH.

PLEASURE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

OUTSTANDING JOB, AND THEN WE HAVE SUMMIT VIEW HIGH SCHOOL HERE.

[INAUDIBLE] WELCOME. HI, I'M MAX FROM THE ASB TEAM AT SOMERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL, AND I'LL BE TALKING ABOUT OUR SPIRIT WEEKS AND JUST THE EVENTS THAT WE HOLD.

WE'VE HAD SOME SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT WEEKS TO GET STUDENTS, LIKE, PARTICIPATED AND HAVE ENJOYED THEIR TIME AT SCHOOL.

CURRENTLY THIS WEEK IS ACTUALLY SHAMROCK SPIRIT WEEK.

TODAY WOULD BE PJ DAY, THEN TOMORROW IS GOING TO BE GREEN CLOTHING DAY, AND THEN ON FRIDAY WE'LL LIKE, DRESS LIKE A LEPRECHAUN DAY JUST TO GIVE STUDENTS A LITTLE BIT OF FUN, AND THEN AFTER NEXT WEEK, THE WEEK AFTER NEXT WEEK, WE'RE GOING TO BE HAVING SPRING SPIRIT WEEK, WHICH WILL BE REVOLVING AROUND LIKE SPRING, EASTER BUNNY EGGS STUFF LIKE THAT, AND WE'VE ALSO BEEN HOSTING LIKE PARTIES AND EVENTS FOR VALENTINE'S DAY.

WE HAD A LITTLE LIKE GATHERING IN OUR CONFERENCE ROOM WHERE STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO EAT ICE CREAM, SOCIALIZE, AND ENGAGE WITH EACH OTHER.

WHILE THERE WOULD BE LIKE A MOVIE PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND, WHICH WE CHOSE AS PRINCESS BRIDE.

VERY COOL. NICE. HELLO, I AM VALERIE FROM SUMMIT VIEW AND I AM GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT THE PET DRIVE WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING, I BELIEVE, NEXT MONTH THROUGH MAY.

IT'S IN HONOR OF NATIONAL PET DAY.

SO WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING A DRIVE THING WITH A POINT SYSTEM FOR SUPPLIES SUCH AS FOOD GROOMING SUPPLIES, TOYS, JUST ANYTHING PET RELATED THAT MIGHT BE NEEDED.

NICE, AND I GUESS THAT'S IT.

FANTASTIC. GREAT IDEA.

THANK YOU. HELLO.

MY NAME IS HAILEY, AND I'M ALSO AT SUMMIT VIEW, AND I'M GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT THE SPACE THAT WE HAVE OPENED UP AT SUMMIT VIEW.

WE HAVE A SPACE OPENED UP IN OUR ACTUAL PHYSICAL SCHOOL SO THAT STUDENTS CAN COME AND WORK WITH TEACHERS OR JUST WORK QUIETLY ON THEIR OWN IF THEY DO NOT HAVE A SPACE LIKE THAT AT HOME.

WE ALSO HAVE SPACE IN OUR SCHOOL REGISTRATION.

SO IF PEOPLE WANT TO SIGN UP FOR SUMMIT VIEW, WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND I WE HAVE PLENTY OF SPACE.

SUMMIT VIEW HAS HELPED ME SO MUCH WITH CATCHING BACK UP AND GETTING READY FOR GRADUATION.

SO WE HAVE PLENTY OF SPACE FOR THAT.

IF ANY OTHER STUDENTS WANT TO JOIN.

I AM ALSO LEADING THE BLOOD DRIVE THAT WE'RE DOING.

WE DID ONE.

WE DID FOR OUR PREVIOUS ONE, WE COLLECTED ABOUT 21 PINTS OF BLOOD, AND THAT'S REALLY GOOD FOR US.

SMALL, VERY, VERY SMALL POPULATION BASED SCHOOL, AND WE'RE DOING ANOTHER ONE IN APRIL, AND I'M HEADING THAT AND I HOPE THAT WE CAN GET MORE BLOOD, BUT HONESTLY, I'D BE HAPPY WITH 21 PINTS AS WELL.

YEAH. NICE JOB.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

HI. MY NAME IS ARIANNA.

I AM A PART OF THE SUMMIT VIEW ASB AND I TALKING ABOUT A FEW THINGS TODAY.

ONE OF WHICH? ONE OF WHICH BEING THAT SO FAR THIS YEAR WE HAVE HAD FIVE GED GRADUATES AND TEN LIKE GRADUATES, ONE OF WHICH WAS TODAY.

[00:20:04]

YEAH. WHICH IS VERY EXCITING.

YEAH, THAT IS VERY EXCITING.

YOU GUYS DO A GOOD JOB OF CELEBRATING DOWN THERE.

YEAH. EVERYONE GOES AROUND RINGING BELLS.

YEAH, YEAH, IT'S A BIG THING.

WE ALSO HAVE AN END OF YEAR PARTY COMING UP FOR THE SENIORS.

IT IS WELL, FOR EVERYONE, BUT IT'S MAINLY FOCUSED FOR THE SENIORS.

IT'S LIKE TROPICAL ISLANDER THEMED.

I THINK IT WAS ALSO IT LAST YEAR, AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE THIS VENDING MACHINE THING GOING, WHICH I THINK WE TALKED ABOUT LAST TIME, BUT IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING WHERE WE'RE PUTTING LIKE LITTLE MYSTERY BAGS INTO THE MACHINE AND PEOPLE CAN, LIKE, BUY THEM AND THEY HAVE, LIKE, LITTLE PRIZES IN THEM, AND IT'S TO, LIKE, HELP FUND THE SCHOOL AND ALSO TO GET STUDENTS INVOLVED.

VERY COOL, VERY COOL.

YEAH. YOU GUYS DID A REALLY NICE JOB.

DON'T GO ANYWHERE. WE MIGHT HAVE QUESTIONS.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? WE'LL MAKE THEM EASY. HOW MANY STUDENTS DO YOU HAVE IN THE SCHOOL? WOULD YOU GUESS? CURRENTLY WE HAVE AROUND 200 TO 300, I WOULD BELIEVE.

YEAH, RIGHT IN THERE. I THINK IT WAS 260 OR 253 OR 268 SOMEWHERE.

RIGHT IN THERE. YEAH, THAT SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT.

YEAH, YEAH.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT.

WHAT DO YOU. I'M JUST CURIOUS.

WHAT DID SUMMIT VIEW DO FOR EACH OF YOU? WHAT WAS THE THING ABOUT IT THAT YOU, YOU LIKED COMPARED TO WHERE YOU WERE GOING TO SCHOOL BEFORE? WELL, I REALLY APPRECIATE SUMMIT VIEW'S FLEXIBILITY.

I AM VERY MY WHOLE SCHOOLING EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN VERY CHAOTIC AND SUMMIT VIEW ALLOWS ME TO EITHER GO FORWARD IN MY STUDIES AS FAR AS I NEED TO, AS FAR AS I WANT TO, OR HANG BACK A LITTLE BIT IF LIFE IS JUST A LITTLE TOO MUCH IN THE MOMENT.

RIGHT. SO SUMMIT VIEW REALLY HELPS WITH THAT FLEXIBILITY.

SO I'M NOT FALLING INTO SUCH A DEEP PIT THAT IF I CAN'T DO AN ASSIGNMENT A CERTAIN DAY, THEN I CAN DO IT ANOTHER DAY AND IT'S NOT A BIG DEAL. WHEREAS IN TRADITIONAL SCHOOL, IF I MISS THAT DEADLINE, THAT IT'S HURTING MY GRADE IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT'S HARD TO CATCH UP, AND SINCE YOU'VE GONE TO SUMMIT SCHOOL, SUMMIT VIEW THAT'S BEEN A POSITIVE.

YOU'RE SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER.

GOOD FOR YOU. THE LOW STRESS LOAD.

I HAVE BEEN SO MUCH HAPPIER AT.

SUMMIT VIEW, AND I CAN DO THE THINGS THAT I WANT TO AND NEED TO WITHOUT HAVING SCHOOL BE THIS IMPEDING FORCE.

SO I NOW ENJOY DOING SCHOOLWORK RATHER THAN DREAD IT.

GOOD FOR YOU. THANK YOU.

ANYBODY ELSE WITH ANYTHING ELSE DIFFERENT? FOR ME, IT'S KIND OF SIMILAR.

I ENJOY THE FLEXIBILITY BECAUSE WITH NORMAL SCHOOL, I FEEL LIKE A NORMAL SCHOOL.

GOING TO SCHOOL FIVE DAYS A WEEK, SEVEN HOURS A DAY.

IT JUST FEELS LIKE YOU'RE LOCKED IN THERE.

WHETHER YOU'RE GOING TOO SLOW OR TOO FAST, IT DOESN'T.

IT FEELS KIND OF DIFFICULT, BUT THEN SUMMIT VIEW HAS GIVEN LIKE THAT MIX BETWEEN ONLINE SCHOOL AND LIKE HOME SCHOOL AND GOING TO A REGULAR SCHOOL.

YOU CAN YOU'RE ASSIGNED TWO DAYS A WEEK TO ATTEND SCHOOL, BUT IF YOU NEED MORE, YOU CAN, LIKE SCHEDULE A MEETING DIRECTLY WITH THE TEACHER, AND THEY'RE, LIKE, VERY FRIENDLY. THE STAFF ARE ALL WILLING TO HELP, AND IT'S JUST REALLY NICE WITH THE FLEXIBILITY, LIKE SHE SAID.

DO YOU GUYS FIND THAT YOU'RE ABLE TO THE RELATIONSHIP SIDE WITH THE TEACHERS SINCE YOU'RE ONLY THERE LIKE A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK? ARE YOU STILL ABLE TO FORM THOSE IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIPS? YES. LIKE RIGHT NOW I'M DOING RUNNING START, SO I DON'T HAVE AS NEARLY AS MANY HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS, BUT LAST YEAR WHEN I HAD MORE TEACHERS, IT WAS WHEN LAST YEAR, WHEN I HAD MORE TEACHERS, I WAS STILL FORMING BONDS WITH THEM.

I WAS FRIENDLY WITH THEM, AND EVEN THIS YEAR I HAD MY, I'M FRIENDS WITH MY PERSONAL FINANCE TEACHER AND ME AND HIM, LIKE, WHENEVER HE WALKS BY, I SEE HIM IN THE HALLWAY.

WE SAY HI TO EACH OTHER, WE SOMETIMES JOKE AROUND.

WE'RE ALL VERY FRIENDLY. YEAH.

THAT'S IMPORTANT. I WOULD SAY THAT HAVING ONE ON ONE TEACHERS IT HELPS FORM A BETTER BOND THAN JUST BEING LOST IN A CLASSROOM.

BEING IN A CLASSROOM, IT'S ALL UP TO THE STUDENT TO PARTICIPATE AND BE REALLY INTERACT WITH THE TEACHER, BECAUSE THE TEACHER CAN'T GIVE THE SAME ATTENTION TO A CLASSROOM OF 25, 30 STUDENTS, WHEREAS ONE ON ONE TEACHING, YOU GET TO REALLY KNOW THE TEACHER YOU GET YOU HAVE RESPECT FOR A TEACHER THAT YOU WOULDN'T HAVE IN A CLASSROOM, AND IT REALLY IT IT MAKES YOU WANT TO DO THEIR SCHOOLWORK THAT THEY ASSIGN BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BE LIKE, HEY, THIS THIS TEACHER IS BEING SO NICE TO ME.

I'M GOING TO BE NICE. WELL, AND YOU CERTAINLY CAN'T HIDE.

[CHUCKLING] YOU CAN'T HIDE. YOU CAN'T HIDE NOTHING WITH THEM.

THEY SEE YOU AND THEY'RE LIKE, HEY, YOU HAVE THIS THING DUE.

WHEN'S THAT GOING TO BE DONE? SO YEAH, IT REALLY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUDENT AND TEACHER IS SO MUCH MORE HEALTHY, I WOULD SAY, AND IT REALLY BOOSTS PRODUCTIVITY.

[00:25:09]

I WOULD THINK. THAT'S NICE TO HEAR.

ARIANNA OR VALERIE, DO YOU GUYS YOU GUYS YOU WERE GOING TO SAY SOMETHING.

COME ON. [CHUCKLING] DON'T HIDE NOW.

WELL THEY BASICALLY SAID EVERYTHING TWICE.

[CHUCKLING] OKAY.

YEAH, IT'S JUST A LOT MORE OF A FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT.

YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE YOU'RE COMPETING WITH OTHER STUDENTS, RIGHT, AND IT'S A LOT EASIER TO LIKE WHEN I DO GO TO SCHOOL AND I WORK WITH MY FRIENDS, IT'S LIKE IT'S EASIER TO WORK WITH, LIKE, FOUR PEOPLE THAN, LIKE, 30 OTHER PEOPLE OR WORKING BY MYSELF IN MY ROOM, LIKE, AT MY OWN PACE.

YEAH. THE TEACHERS ARE VERY NICE AND KIND AND THEY'RE VERY UNDERSTANDING, LIKE IF YOU'RE GOING THROUGH SOMETHING OR IF YOU'RE JUST, LIKE, NOT FEELING LIKE YOURSELF, THEY'RE VERY HELPFUL AND THEY TRY AND HELP YOU THROUGH IT AS MUCH AS THEY CAN, AND STUDENTS THERE ARE AMAZING.

YEAH. THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR.

VERY GOOD. YEAH. VERY NICE.

YEAH, YEAH. THANK YOU FOR SHARING.

WHICH OF THE TWO QUESTIONS WOULD YOU PREFER ME TO ANSWER? WHICHEVER ONE YOU ARE MOST COMFORTABLE WITH.

[INAUDIBLE] THE FIRST QUESTION WAS WHAT ARE YOU GETTING OUT OF IT AND THE SECOND ONE WAS RELATIONSHIPS WITH TEACHERS.

SO WHATEVER YOU'RE COMFORTABLE.

FOR WHAT I'M GETTING OUT OF SUMMIT VIEW, IT HAD, LIKE, SORRY FOR BEING REPETITIVE, BUT IT GOES ALONG WITH THE FLEXIBILITY.

IT'S BECAUSE OF THE FLEXIBILITY.

IT'S ACTUALLY GIVEN ME A LOT MORE TIME AND FREEDOM TO EXPERIENCE, LIKE SOME PERSONAL GROWTH, AND THAT'S GOOD, BECAUSE THE THING IS, WITH SCHOOL, LIKE HALF OF YOUR DAY IS BEING DEDICATED TO JUST PURE ACADEMICS, AND LIKE, SOMETIMES IT'D BE STRESSFUL HANGING AROUND WITH A BUNCH OF STUDENTS LIKE 24/7, AND I'M KIND OF NERVOUS AROUND SOCIAL INTERACTIONS, BUT WITH SUMMIT VIEW, WHEN I'M HOME, A LOT OF THE TIME IT'S LIKE MORE QUIET AND I CAN GO AT MY OWN PACE. SO I'VE ACTUALLY BEEN ABLE TO HAVE A LOT MORE ROOM TO EXPLORE, LIKE, OH, HOW I WORK AND WHAT I'M INTO.

LIKE I'VE GONE WAY MORE INTO WRITING AND ART, SO THAT'S GOOD, AND FOR THE TEACHERS, I DO BELIEVE, LIKE MY OLD ENGLISH TEACHER, I STILL TALK TO HER DESPITE NOT BEING IN HER CLASS ANYMORE.

LIKE EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE HER IN THE HALLWAY, LIKE WE HAVE A LITTLE CHAT.

SO YES, IT'S NICE.

GOOD. COOL. YEAH.

VERY COOL. THANK YOU GUYS.

THANK YOU. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? ALL RIGHT. OUTSTANDING. GREAT, NOW, I'LL JUST ASK IF WE HAVE ANY OTHERS IN THE AUDIENCE, OTHER STUDENTS IN THE AUDIENCE THAT DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO COME UP.

SEEING NO ONE RUN TOWARDS THE PODIUM, WE WILL TURN IT OVER TO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES.

YEAH. SO THIS, OH, I DON'T KNOW WHAT DAY TOMORROW.

ACTUALLY, MARCH 12TH AT 7 P.M.

IN THE LAIR AT BATTLE GROUND, THERE IS THE CHOIR SPOTLIGHT.

SO A BUNCH OF OUR TALENTED INDIVIDUALS IN CHOIR ARE GOING TO BE SHOWING OFF THEIR SKILLS.

SO I'D HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL OF YOU TO GO TO THAT, AND THAT WAS 7 P.M.

TOMORROW, AND THEN THIS WEEK IS OUR TOLO SPIRIT WEEK, AND THEN ON SATURDAY WE'RE HAVING OUR TOLO DANCE.

SO THAT WILL BE SUPER FUN, AND THE SPIRIT DAYS ARE PRETTY COOL THIS WEEK.

SO TODAY WAS COUNTRY VERSUS CITY.

TOMORROW IS SURFERS VERSUS BIKERS.

WEDNESDAY IS HIPPIE VERSUS JOCK, AND THEN THAT'S FOLLOWED WITH DISNEY VERSUS NICKELODEON AND THEN FRIDAY WE END IT ALL OFF WITH COLOR WARS, AND EACH GRADE LEVEL WEARS THEIR RESPECTIVE COLOR THAT'S BEEN ASSIGNED TO THEM, AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AN ASSEMBLY THAT DAY, A SPIRIT ASSEMBLY.

SO THAT WILL BE A FUN DAY, AND THEN YEAH, THAT'S ABOUT IT.

EXCEPT FOR PARENT AND TEACHER CONFERENCES AT THE HIGH SCHOOL IS NEXT WEEK ON MARCH 20TH AND 21ST.

SO THANK GOODNESS THAT'LL BE AN EARLY RELEASE FOR ME, AND YEAH, THAT'S ABOUT IT.

OKAY. WAIT. OKAY, COOL.

SO AT RIVER, WAIT, HOLD ON.

LET ME. OKAY, SO DURING THE STUDENT VOICE, I LIKE KIND OF.

OKAY, SO FOR THE RIVER HOMELINK, WE'RE HAVING LIKE THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION, WE'RE HAVING THE KIDS HEART CHALLENGE RIGHT NOW, WHICH I THINK IT I ACTUALLY AM NOT SURE IF IT EVEN STARTED YET.

I THINK IT'S ABOUT TO START, BUT LIKE RIGHT NOW WE'RE ALL JUST SIGNING UP FOR IT ACTUALLY DOESN'T HAVE DATES, BUT THE WINNER GETS TO SLIME THE PRINCIPAL, AND IT'S LIKE, AND THEN THERE'S LIKE A TEACHER VERSUS STUDENT, LIKE DODGEBALL GAME HAPPENING AND LIKE ALL THIS OTHER STUFF GOING ON, AND SO THAT'S SUPER DUPER FUN, AND THEN OUR PTO IS HAVING PENNY WARS RIGHT NOW, THE WINNERS.

IT'S MAINLY FOR LIKE I THINK IT'S MAINLY FOR K THROUGH SIX.

[00:30:01]

WHATEVER GRADE GROUP WINS GETS AN ICE CREAM PARTY, WHICH I WISH I WISH MY GROUP WOULD WIN, BUT AND THEN FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF APRIL, OUR SCHOOL IS HAVING AN ART SHOW. SO IF YOU GUYS EVER WANT TO SHOW UP TO THE COMMONS, IT'LL BE IN THE PIT, AND EVERYBODY IN HIGH SCHOOL IS LIKE, REQUIRED TO SUBMIT AT LEAST ONE THING, BUT YOU CAN ALSO SUBMIT MORE, AND LIKE LAST YEAR, OUR PHOTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT WENT CRAZY AND THE PHOTOS WERE LIKE INSANE.

I WISH MR. KESSLER HADN'T LEFT FIVE SECONDS AGO BECAUSE HE WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE, YEAH! BUT YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE TO TALK TO HIM ABOUT SLIDING OUT, RIGHT WHEN YOU'RE READY TO GIVE YOUR REPORT.

I KNOW HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, HONESTLY.

HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER. I'LL GIVE HIM A PIECE OF MY MIND TOMORROW.

IT'S ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. [CHUCKLING] IT'S ACTUALLY LIKE, NO, IT'S CRAZY.

I IT WAS SO INAPPROPRIATE, BUT YEAH, ANOTHER COOL THING THAT HAPPENED LIKE I THINK IT WAS LIKE TEN DAYS AGO WE HAD OUR FIRST, LIKE, OFFICIAL SIGNING, LIKE ATHLETIC SIGNING AT OUR SCHOOL.

I SAW THAT, AND SO WE HAVE HAD, I THINK NOT VERY MANY.

I THINK WE'VE HAD LIKE THREE STUDENTS PROBABLY GO COLLEGIATE AND LIKE ATHLETICS, BUT SERENA HUGHES GUYS, SHE'S SO COOL.

OH MY GOSH. SHE DOES LIKE SHE DOES.

BEYOND BEING RECRUITED FOR SOFTBALL, SHE ALSO DOES THE LIKE CASCADIA TECH CRIMINAL JUSTICE, AND SHE'S INVOLVED WITH LIKE, COOL GAL.

OKAY, BUT SHE COMMITTED TO HESSTON COLLEGE IN KANSAS.

SHE'S A CATCHER, AND SHE INSISTED THAT SHE HAS IT AT OUR SCHOOL INSTEAD OF HAVING IT AT PRAIRIE, WHICH MOST PEOPLE HAVE AT THE SCHOOLS THAT THEY LIKE.

THEY PLAYED FOR THAT THEY PLAYED FOR, BUT SHE WAS LIKE, I WANT TO HAVE IT AT RIVER, AND THAT'S VERY COOL.

I ACTUALLY WASN'T THERE THE DAY THAT SHE DID IT, BUT IT WAS VERY COOL TO HEAR ABOUT.

SO THAT WAS AWESOME AND I DON'T HAVE MUCH ELSE TO UPDATE, SO THANKS YOU GUYS.

THAT'S GOOD. THANK YOU. YES.

ALL RIGHT. WE DO HAVE ON OUR AGENDA ANOTHER RECOGNITION AFTER STUDENT VOICE.

UNFORTUNATELY THAT WILL BE POSTPONED FOR ANOTHER DAY.

SO WE WILL MOVE ON TO COMMITTEE REPORTS AND WE WILL START WITH THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE.

OKAY. WELL, AS YOU KNOW, THE SESSION IS OVER, AND SO I'LL LEAVE IT TO OUR EXCELLENT DISTRICT STAFF AND FINANCE DEPARTMENT TO FILL US IN AS WE GO FORWARD ON THE WINS AND LOSSES THERE, BUT WHAT I WANTED TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION TONIGHT IS THAT THIS MONTH OPENS THE WINDOW FOR WSSDA POSITIONS, AND IF WE WANT TO SUBMIT, EITHER WE CAN RETIRE POSITIONS, WE CAN MAKE AMENDMENTS TO POSITIONS, OR WE CAN PROPOSE NEW POSITIONS, AND SO JUST TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND, I DON'T KNOW IF SUMMIT VIEW WILL REMEMBER A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO WHEN THERE WAS A POSITION THAT WAS BROUGHT FORWARD TO WSSDA THAT STATED THAT PARENTS ARE A PRIMARY STAKEHOLDERS FOR KIDS, AND IT WAS AN HOUR DEBATE, IF YOU RECALL, BUT IT DID PASS, AND THE REASON THAT'S IMPORTANT IS BECAUSE OUR POSITIONS ARE WHAT DRIVE WSSDA'S ADVOCACY IN THE LEGISLATURE.

SO BECAUSE OF THAT POSITION AND THAT CLEAR POSITION, WHEN THE BILL CAME UP ABOUT PARENTS RIGHTS THIS YEAR, WSSDA WAS THE ONLY EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION THAT STEPPED FORWARD AND TESTIFIED FOR THAT BILL, AND SO THOSE POSITIONS ARE REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY DO GIVE DIRECTIONS TO WSSDA.

THAT BEING SAID, NEXT MEETING, I WOULD LIKE TO BRING YOU 2 OR 3 PROPOSALS FOR POSITIONS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE US AMEND, AND SO WE WOULD HAVE TO VOTE ON IT AS A BOARD, AND SO I'LL GET THOSE TO SANDY SO THAT WE CAN GET THEM ON THE AGENDA, IF THAT'S OKAY WITH YOU, SO THAT WE COULD VOTE ON THEM NEXT TIME, AND THEY HAVE TO DO WITH, I THINK, CLARIFYING SOME OF THE WORDING AND SOME OF THE POSITIONS WE HAVE, BUT I THINK GOING FORWARD SOME MORE CLARITY MIGHT BE GOOD.

COULD YOU SHARE THOSE WITH US PRIOR? YES, I'LL SHARE THEM WITH.

WITH YOU. DEFINITELY.

I CAN DO THAT IN THIS NEXT WEEK.

PERFECT. OKAY, THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO REPORT.

THANK YOU. ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LEDGE REPORT? OKAY. AUDIT COMMITTEE REPORT.

WE POSTPONED OUR MEETING.

TED WAS OUT OF TOWN, AND SO WE DECIDED TO DO IT LATER IN THE MONTH IF I GOT THAT STRAIGHT.

I BELIEVE IT'S SCHEDULED FOR.

I'M NOT SURE. THE RESCHEDULED DATE.

I DON'T THINK WE DID GET A DATE.

YEAH, WE JUST TALKED ABOUT DOING IT LATER IN THE MONTH.

YEAH. OKAY. BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION.

WE HAVE AN EXECUTIVE MEETING TOMORROW, AND I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY WHAT THE TOPIC IS.

I BELIEVE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH A COMPANY THAT THEY'RE LOOKING AT TO HELP WITH FUNDRAISING AND BRINGING IN MORE, MORE

[00:35:07]

MONEY FOR THE FOR THE FOUNDATION, SO I'LL KNOW MORE NEXT TIME.

OKAY. WITH TED OUT, WE WON'T HAVE A WYAA REPORT.

SO DO WE HAVE ANY WSSDA UPDATES? WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION UPDATES? WELL, I WON'T BE THERE, BUT THE REGIONAL MEETING IS NEXT THURSDAY, THE 21ST.

IS THAT RIGHT? YES, REGIONAL MEETING IS NEXT THURSDAY.

BATTLE GROUND IS HOSTING.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE PERFORMANCE DINNER, A LITTLE DINNER, A LITTLE DINNER JAZZ MUSIC FROM OUR JAZZ COMBO AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, AND THEN THE MEAL IS GOING TO BE PREPARED AND SERVED BY THE CULINARY PROGRAM AT BATTLE GROUND, SO IT'LL BE FIRST RATE.

I BELIEVE THE WSSDA HAS A WE GET 15 MINUTES.

SO WE'RE DOING THE HOSTING AND YOU KNOW, SHOWING OFF A LITTLE BIT, AND THEN THE REST OF THE MEETING IS WSSDA BUSINESS, AND I THINK THEY'RE JUST GOING TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE TOUGH ISSUES THAT BOARDS ARE DEALING WITH.

SO I HOPE IF YOU'RE AROUND YOU'LL CONSIDER ATTENDING.

I THINK SANDY PUT OUT AN INVITATION, AND I DON'T KNOW THAT WE'VE HEARD BACK FROM EVERYBODY, BUT IF YOU COULD LET US KNOW, WE'D APPRECIATE IT.

ANYTHING ELSE FOR WSSDA UPDATES.

SO WE HAVE A TOUR.

THE TOURS.

THERE WAS A TOUR THAT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

[INAUDIBLE] I'LL LET YOU GUYS GO FIRST.

SURE. IT WAS FANTASTIC.

WE WERE LED AROUND BY SOME OF THE STUDENTS, AND WE WERE ABLE TO HAVE TIME WITH A NUMBER OF THE TEACHERS.

WE GATHERED TOGETHER WITH THE PRINCIPAL.

HE WAS VERY INFORMATIVE.

I SPENT QUITE A BIT OF TIME WITH.

THE I SEE I DIDN'T WRITE A NOTE, SO I DON'T HAVE IT IN FRONT OF ME.

THE MILITARY MR. COLONEL WOODWARD. YES, ANDY WOODWARD.

OH, MY GOODNESS. IT WAS JUST AMAZING TO HEAR WHAT THEY WERE DOING AND HIS ANSWERS TO US.

IT WAS JUST REALLY IMPRESSIVE.

SO SPENT QUITE A BIT OF TIME TALKING WITH HIM ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING.

[INAUDIBLE] YOU WEREN'T THERE.

OH, YES, I WENT AND IT WAS JUST WONDERFUL TO SEE ALL THE LEARNING, AND WE TALKED TO A LOT OF THE DIFFERENT TEACHERS.

THEY EXPRESSED A LOT OF EXCITEMENT ABOUT THE LEARNING THAT'S GOING ON.

YEAH. IT WAS JUST REALLY IT WAS REALLY ENLIGHTENING AND VERY ENJOYABLE, AND IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THE STUDENTS ACTIVELY INVOLVED WITH, WITH WHAT WAS BEING TAUGHT.

JACKIE, IF I COULD MENTION TOO, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF GOING INTO THE SIGNING CLASS WHERE THEY HAVE A TEACHER THAT O NLY SIGNS.

SHE DOESN'T SPEAK, AND IT WAS THE STUDENTS.

WHAT IMPRESSED ME THE MOST WAS THAT THE STUDENTS WERE SO ENGAGED AND EXCITED ABOUT BEING A PART OF THE PROGRAM AND LEARNING THEIR SIGN LANGUAGE AND STUFF, YOU KNOW? SO IT WAS REALLY IMPRESSIVE.

[INAUDIBLE], I APOLOGIZE, I WAS NOT AT THIS TOUR.

I HAVE A COMMENT, BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY HAS [INAUDIBLE].

YOU GUYS WERE THERE? SORA WAS THERE.

YEAH, IT WAS MY SCHOOL, THOUGH, SO IT WAS A LITTLE DIFFERENT FOR ME TO EXPERIENCE, BUT IT WAS REALLY COOL TO LIKE WALK AROUND AND SEE DIFFERENT CLASSES FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. AS YOU KNOW, NOT BEING A STUDENT IN THAT CLASS, AND I JUST APPRECIATE EVERY SINGLE TIME I GET TO STEP INTO THE ROTC LIKE BUILDING AND CLASSROOMS BECAUSE THEY ARE SO COOL. THEY HAVE SUCH COOL RESOURCES.

THEIR LITTLE LIKE PLANE FLYING SIMULATOR, COMPUTER SCREENS ARE SO COOL.

I JUST STARE AT THEM EVERY TIME, AND YEAH, THAT'S COOL.

SORA, CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHEN WE WERE IN MRS. [INAUDIBLE]'S CLASS, WHEN YOU GUYS WERE DOING I DON'T KNOW WHAT, IT WASN'T A TRIAL, BUT IT WAS SOMETHING.

YEAH, THAT WAS IN MR. [INAUDIBLE]. OH, OKAY.

WE WERE SIMULATING A SUPREME COURT LIKE, DECISION, SO I WAS, O OH, MY GOSH, WHAT? IT WAS NEW JERSEY VERSUS TLO, AND IT WAS ABOUT A STUDENT HAVING LIKE, CIGARRETES IN THE BATHROOM, AND THEN IT WAS ABOUT THE FOURTH AMENDMENT, LIKE SEARCH AND SEIZURE, AND WE WERE ARGUING WHETHER THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEARCH THE STUDENT'S BAG MORE AND DISCOVER, LIKE, MARIJUANA IN THERE.

SO IT WAS YEAH, WE WERE LIKE DEBATING.

IT WAS REALLY COOL. WE ALWAYS DO LIKE VERY PROJECT BASED ASSIGNMENTS IN THERE, AND THEY ALL GET REALLY LIKE FUNNY.

[00:40:01]

THEY GET REALLY PASSIONATE, AND IT'S VERY IT'S A COOL WAY TO LEARN.

SO IT'S REALLY FUN.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE.

YEAH. THAT'S GOOD.

YOU GUYS HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD? JULIA, WERE YOU THERE? I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY I DON'T GO TO, LIKE, A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL, AND SO IT WAS LIKE, COOL TO LIKE, GO TO A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL AND THEN BE TOURED AROUND, AND I ALSO GOT TO GO. I WENT WITH TWO ASB REPRESENTATIVES AND THEN THREE ASB REPRESENTATIVES, AND MR. GORD WAS ALSO WITH US AND I ASKED HIM PROBABLY LIKE 20 QUESTIONS, BUT LIKE THERE WERE QUESTIONS THAT I WAS LIKE, OKAY, LIKE I PROBABLY SHOULD KNOW THIS, BUT BUT HE WAS VERY LIKE INFORMATIVE, AND I LEARNED SO MUCH AND ALSO LIKE GOT REALLY LOST.

I NEVER KNEW THAT WAS THE BIGGEST THING I REMEMBER IS THAT SCHOOL WAS A MAZE.

IT REALLY IS, AND LIKE WE LIKE WENT IN ONE WAY, AND THEN I WAS LIKE, HOW ARE WE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF CAMPUS RIGHT NOW? I STILL DON'T KNOW, BUT BUT NO, IT WAS REALLY AWESOME.

OKAY. THAT'S GOOD.

YEAH, JUST OVERALL A VERY GOOD TRIP.

I APPRECIATE THE ADMINISTRATION AND THE STUDENT VOLUNTEERS FOR ALL THE WORK THEY DID TO PUT TOGETHER A GOOD TOUR.

YEAH. I REALLY ENJOYED.

WE WENT TO A LOT OF CT CLASSES.

I ENJOYED THE VISIT TO THE WELDING.

I ENJOYED THE VISIT TO THE GLASS AND JEWELRY CLASS.

THAT'S ALWAYS A FANTASTIC CLASS.

THERE WERE JUST A LOT OF GOOD THINGS TO SEE.

DITTO. YEAH. THERE YOU GO.

YEAH, [INAUDIBLE]. SO I WASN'T THERE, BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS INTERESTING.

I WANTED TO SHARE THIS WITH THE BOARD, AND THEN I JUST KIND OF HAVE A COMMENT ABOUT IT.

PROBABLY AT LEAST AT LEAST TO A FEW OF YOU, I.

THERE WAS A FIGHT IN THE BATHROOM WHILE YOU GUYS WERE THERE, AND I THINK IT WAS UNKNOWN TO THE BOARD.

IT WAS VERY QUIETLY TAKEN CARE OF AND ADMINISTRATION STEPPED IN.

WHAT I APPRECIATED EARLIER IS YOU SAID SHOW OFF, RIGHT? LIKE WE WANT TO COME TO SCHOOLS AND TOUR YOUR SCHOOLS, AND WE WANT YOU TO SHOW OFF ALL THE GOOD THINGS, BUT THERE'S STILL SCHOOL AND IT'S STILL LIFE THAT HAPPENS.

WHAT MADE ME SAD WAS THAT ONE OF THE ADMINISTRATORS SAID, HOLD THIS STUDENT FOR A LITTLE BIT.

I WANT TO GO SAY GOODBYE TO THE BOARD, AND I DON'T WANT ANY ADMINISTRATOR OR ANY SCHOOL THAT WE TOUR TO FEEL LIKE WE'RE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT STUDENT OR THAT SITUATION.

SO THAT'S JUST MY TWO CENTS, MY OPINION.

I'M NOT SPEAKING FOR THE BOARD, BUT I THOUGHT THAT IN A TRANSPARENT WAY.

I WANTED EVERYBODY TO BE AWARE THAT SCHOOLS ARE STILL SCHOOLS, AND WE DON'T EXPECT YOU TO BE PERFECT AND WE'RE JUST HUMAN.

SO PLEASE DON'T THINK YOU NEED TO RISE TO A DIFFERENT LEVEL TO IMPRESS US BECAUSE WE'RE IMPRESSED ALREADY WITH WHAT YOU DO.

THANK YOU.

WE DO HAVE A TOUR TOMORROW.

YES, AT DAYBREAK.

DAYBREAK PRIMARY AND THEN TOURS COMING UP ON THE 22ND AND THE 26TH.

SO I HOPE EVERYBODY GETS TO ENJOY THOSE, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING THE REPORTS ABOUT THAT.

I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE I WON'T BE THERE ON THE 22ND.

SO SORA I HOPE YOU AND DIRECTOR TATE WILL BE ABLE TO BE THERE FOR ME.

I SURE WILL, YEAH.

I'M TEMPTED TO TEASE YOU, MARY, BUT ABSOLUTELY NOT A PROBLEM.

OKAY. THANK YOU.

THAT MOVES US ON TO DIRECTOR'S REPORTS.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANYTHING TO SHARE? OKAY, WELL, I'LL JUST SHARE THAT.

LAST SATURDAY WAS THE PUD, CLARK PUD PUT ON THE SOLAR CAR CHALLENGE, AND 17 HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS WERE SIGNED UP.

12 TWO OF THEM DIDN'T SHOW, AND OUT OF THE REMAINING 15, 12 OF THOSE TEAMS WERE FROM CAM, AND THEY DID AMAZING.

SO I LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING THEM COME AND TELL EVERYBODY ALL ABOUT IT.

I DO TOO, AND I'M GLAD YOU BROUGHT THAT UP.

I DIDN'T GET TO GO TO IT, BUT I HEARD THAT THEY TOOK FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD.

THAT'S PRETTY COOL. ANY OTHER DIRECTOR REPORTS? HEARING NONE. WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT, YES, I DO.

AT THE LAST SECOND.

I JUST REALIZED NOTHING'S BEEN SAID MUCH ABOUT THE CHESS FOLKS AND PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL, SO I DON'T KNOW IF THIS CONSTITUTES A DIRECTOR'S REPORT OR NOT.

I'M NOT SURE WHAT A DIRECTOR'S REPORT IS YET.

YOU'RE IN, BUT THE CHESS TEAM WAS INVITED TO THE STATE CHAMPIONS.

OKAY. THEY ARE NOT.

THE CHESS TEAM IS NEW AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.

TODD FERRIS HAS BEEN LEADING IT UP, AND I'M SO THANKFUL FOR HIS ENERGIES THAT HE'S PUT INTO IT, AND SO SO THERE WAS 38, 40 TEAMS.

[00:45:03]

THEY GOT LIKE 34TH OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

I'M SORRY, I DON'T HAVE THE EXACT INFORMATION.

SO I'M SURE I WENT TO SO MANY TOURNAMENTS AND YOU JUST DON'T DO AS WELL AS YOU'D LIKE TO SOMETIMES, AND SO YOU'RE NOT SO ENTHUSIASTIC TO GO TALK TO THE BOARD ABOUT HOW YOU GOT LIKE 32ND OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS, YOU KNOW? SO I JUST WANT TO I JUST WANT TO PUT THEM ON THE MAP AS HAVING GONE, AND I WAS SO PROUD OF THEM TO GO, AND I WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE.

THEY WENT TO BELLEVUE AND IT WAS A TWO DAY THING.

SO IT'S A BIG INVESTMENT, AND YEAH, THEY DID A GREAT A GREAT THING GETTING THERE.

IT WAS A BIG DEAL.

THAT'S A GREAT DIRECTOR'S REPORT.

YEAH OKAY OKAY. THAT'S A GOOD REPORT.

ALL RIGHT. ALL RIGHT. WELL I'M PLEASED TO REPORT ON THEM BECAUSE I'M PROUD OF THEM.

OKAY. HEARING SILENCE, WE'RE GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO SUPERINTENDENT AND STAFF UPDATES.

[6. Superintendent and Staff Updates]

I'M GOING TO GO AHEAD AND PASS ON BECAUSE WE'VE GOT A NUMBER OF IMPORTANT TOPICS FROM THE REST OF THE TEAM HERE.

SO I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO TEACHING AND LEARNING AND SHELLY WHITTEN THIS IS STILL BECAUSE IT'S EARLY ON AFTER THE LEGISLATURE HAS FINISHED, WE'RE JUST BEGINNING TO LOOK AT THE IMPLICATIONS OF SOME OF THE PASSAGES OF SENATE BILLS AND HOUSE BILLS.

SO WE'LL PROBABLY HAVE SOME UPDATES AROUND THAT IN THE NEAR FUTURE WHEN WE FIGURE OUT THE IMPLICATIONS OF THOSE BECOME LAWS WITH RULES BEHIND THEM, BUT TONIGHT WE ARE THRILLED THAT WE'RE ABLE TO HAVE A PRESENTATION ABOUT DISTRICT DATA, AND I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE TRAVIS DRAKE TO DO OUR PRESENTATION TONIGHT.

THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING.

I WANT TO SAY THAT ENROLLMENT AT SUMMIT VIEW IS ACTUALLY EXACTLY 300 HEADCOUNT, AND RIGHT NOW FOR OUR DISTRICT, ALMOST 17% OF OUR DISTRICT ENROLLMENT IS INVOLVED, IS ENROLLED AT AN ALE SCHOOL.

SO I KNOW DENNY OR SHELLY MENTIONED EARLIER THE NEED TO ALLOW THOSE PROGRAMS TO EXPAND, AND THEY ARE, AND WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WAYS TO ALLOW THEM TO CONTINUE TO EXPAND.

SO JUST A SIDE NOTE ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE WANTED TO DO LAST YEAR, BECAUSE WE HAVE CHALLENGING WAYS TO DETERMINE HOW WE ARE DOING OUR JOB, WE'VE HAD CONVERSATIONS WITH THIS BOARD AROUND SMARTER BALANCE AND THE VALUE IN JUST LOOKING AT THE SMARTER BALANCE SCORES IN THE SPRING AND THE CHALLENGES THAT COME WITH THAT AND SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE CREATED IS A DISTRICT DATA OVERVIEW AND THE PURPOSE OF DOING THIS, AND THEN I'LL GET INTO THE SLIDES.

SPECIFICALLY, WE WANT A DATA CONNECTED TO OUR STRATEGIC PLAN AND OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS, AND THE SECOND GOAL IS TO HAVE THAT DATA COME IN A TIMELY MANNER ALMOST IN REAL TIME, AND THE INCREMENTS WE HAVE SELECTED ARE SIX WEEKS BECAUSE WE ARE ON SIX WEEK GRADING PERIODS, AND SO WHAT I'M GOING TO DO IS TALK ABOUT HOW THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN AND THE STRATEGIC PLANS ARE CONNECTED, AND THEN I BELIEVE YOU'VE ALL BEEN SENT A LINK TO ACCESS THIS DATA FOR YOU TO LOOK AT ANY TIME YOU WANT, AND AGAIN, WE UPDATE IT EVERY SIX WEEKS.

SO ON THE SCREEN IS THERE A PORTABLE MIC? CHECK. THANK YOU, LISA.

SO ON THE SCREEN WE HAVE TWO DOCUMENTS.

THE STRATEGIC PLAN, WHICH I THINK WE DO A REALLY GOOD JOB OF TRYING TO MAKE IT AS LIVE AND REAL AS POSSIBLE.

SO IT'S NOT JUST A DOCUMENT THAT WE'VE CREATED AND TUCKED IN A FOLDER.

SO OUR THREE OVERARCHING GOALS, AND I'M NOT GOING TO READ ALL OF THEM.

SAFE AND CARING ENVIRONMENT, HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION AND COLLABORATION THAT CULTIVATES TRUST.

SO THOSE THREE GOALS ARE THE THREE GOALS THAT DRIVE THE WORK THAT WE DO TONIGHT.

REALLY, I'M JUST GOING TO FOCUS ON HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION IN TERMS OF THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS.

SO HERE'S AN EXAMPLE.

THIS IS ACTUALLY CHIEFS.

WE DIDN'T GET THEIR PERMISSION.

SO BUT I'M GLAD TAMARA AND JUSTIN AREN'T HERE.

SO THIS IS CHIEFS SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN, AND IN EACH SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS WHICH I KNOW YOU HAVE SEEN, BUT IF YOU'RE LIKE ME, SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO SEE THINGS MULTIPLE TIMES BEFORE THEY CONNECT IN EACH OF THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS.

ALL OF THE DATA IN THE GOALS THAT THEY PUT IN THERE ARE DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN.

SO FOR HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION, AGAIN WE HAVE THOSE THREE GOALS, BUT I'M JUST GOING TO FOCUS ON HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS BRIEF PRESENTATION.

THE STRATEGIES IMPLEMENT HIGH QUALITY, STANDARDS BASED INSTRUCTION AND INTERVENTIONS THAT SUPPORT CRITICAL THINKING AND HIGH LEVELS OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT.

CREATE PERSONALIZED LEARNING PATHWAYS THAT DEVELOP CAREER AND COLLEGE READY STUDENTS AND PROVIDE ONGOING, TARGETED PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND SUPPORT FOR STAFF TO MEET THE

[00:50:01]

DIVERSE NEEDS OF STUDENTS.

SO AGAIN, THIS IS THE STRATEGIC PLAN HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION COMPONENT.

NEXT SLIDE. CONTINUING INCREASED PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS MEETING OR EXCEEDING PROFICIENCY STANDARDS ON STATE ASSESSMENTS, AND I WILL SHOW YOU WHAT THOSE LOOK LIKE HERE IN JUST A MOMENT. INCREASED FOUR YEAR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATES, INCREASED PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE ADVANCED PLACEMENT, RUNNING START AND CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION CLASSES. SO THE CTE CLASSES, WHICH YOU WERE ABLE TO SEE AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN INCREASED PERCENTAGE OF STAFF WHO REPORT NEW LEARNING SKILLS AND STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE INSTRUCTION AS A RESULT OF ENGAGING IN OUR DISTRICT'S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

NEXT SLIDE. SO THAT WAS THE STRATEGIC PLAN, AND THEN IF YOU LOOK AT THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN AGAIN THIS IS CHIEF.

THANK YOU CHIEF.

NEXT SLIDE. SOME OF THE COMPONENTS FROM FROM THEIR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN.

SO ATTACHING IT TO HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION.

THIS IS THEIR GOAL.

46% OF FIFTH, SIXTH, SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS WILL MEET PROFICIENCY ON THE MATH SMARTER BALANCE.

LAST YEAR THEY WERE AT 43.3, AND THIS YEAR THEIR GOAL IS 46%.

WE'VE DISCUSSED THE CHALLENGES OF UTILIZING SMARTER BALANCE.

IT'S EASY OUTWARDLY LOOKING AT THESE SCORES IN THE SPRING.

ACTUALLY, TYPICALLY WE GET THEM IN THE SUMMER OR EARLY FALL AND WONDER WHAT'S GOING ON IN SCHOOLS, AND WE ALL RECOGNIZE WE HAVE GROWTH, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THESE TESTS HAVE SOME CHALLENGES WITH THEM IN TERMS OF MOTIVATING STUDENTS TO TAKE THEM AND PUT THEIR BEST EFFORT, AND SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'LL LOOK AT HERE IN JUST A MINUTE, WHAT OTHER CRITERIA AND COMPONENT DATA COMPONENTS CAN WE LOOK AT TO DETERMINE HOW WE'RE DOING AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, TO DETERMINE WHAT IMPROVEMENTS WE CAN MAKE DOWN ON THE BOTTOM HERE? I'M NOT GOING TO READ ALL OF THIS.

I'M REALLY TRYING TO GET TO THE DATA COMPONENT, AND I KNOW WE HAVE A LOT OF OTHER THINGS TO GET THROUGH TONIGHT, BUT WE WANTED TO CONNECT THE DISTRICT STRATEGY TO EVERY GOAL THAT WE HAVE IN OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN, AND I WANT TO GIVE A LOT OF CREDIT TO LUKE AND DAVID KENNEDY FOR MORPHING OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS TO MAKE THOSE CONNECTIONS TO THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN. SO THIS IS THE MATH ACHIEVEMENT GOAL.

NEXT SLIDE. THE ELA ACHIEVEMENT GOAL.

SO AS YOU CAN SEE IN 2023 THEY HAD 50%.

THE GOAL THIS YEAR IS 55% OF THEIR FIFTH, SIXTH, SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS MEETING PROFICIENCY, AND AGAIN ON THE BOTTOM THERE YOU CAN SEE THE DISTRICT STRATEGY AND THE CONNECTIONS TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN.

NEXT SLIDE. THEN WHAT WE DO NEXT ON THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN IS THE SCHOOL TALKS ABOUT ACTION STEPS THAT THEY CAN TAKE TO IMPROVE THOSE SCORES. SO SETTING A GOAL BY ITSELF ISN'T THE ACTUAL WORK.

THE ACTUAL WORK IS THE STEPS YOU TAKE TO IMPROVE THAT GOAL.

SO ONE OF OUR BIG FOCUSES AS A DISTRICT IS AROUND THE PLC PROCESS.

WE WANT TO PROVIDE COMMON FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS, REVIEW DATA AND IMPLEMENT A SYSTEM TO SUPPORT STUDENTS BASED ON NEEDS, AND THEN NUMBER TWO, PLCS USING COMMON FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT AND END OF UNIT ASSESSMENT DATA ON SELECTED ESSENTIAL STANDARDS TO SHOW MEASURABLE GROWTH FOR NEARLY ALL STUDENTS.

NEXT SLIDE, AND THEN WE ARE ASKING, AND OUR TEACHERS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB OF UTILIZING THE SEVEN STEP PLC PROCESS TO ENGAGE IN THE CONTENT SPECIFIC, INCLUSIVE PLCS AND SO THAT IS ACTUALLY WHERE THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT HAPPENS WITHIN THOSE PLC TEAMS. NEXT. FOR CHIEF, THE CHIEF MIDDLE SCHOOL DATA SHEET SHOWS COMPLETION OF THE SEVEN STEPS, SO THEY WOULD LOOK TO SEE HOW MANY TEAMS WITHIN CHIEF MIDDLE SCHOOL HAVE COMPLETED THE SEVEN STEPS IN THE PLC PROCESS, AND THEN STUDENTS WILL SHOW GROWTH IN THE PLC DATA.

SO THAT'S LOOKING AT COMMON PRE, MID AND POST FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS.

REALLY JUST CHECKING IN TO DETERMINE THAT THE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING THE INTENDED OBJECTIVES AND STANDARDS THAT WE SET OUT FOR AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH UNIT.

ALL RIGHT. SO CAN YOU CLICK ON THAT, AND FOR OBVIOUS REASONS, I'M NOT GOING TO GO THROUGH ALL OF THIS.

IF YOU COULD CLICK ON THIS IS CAPTAIN AND SCROLL DOWN JUST FOR THE HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION RIGHT THERE.

IT'S PERFECT, AND SO THAT'S GREAT.

WHAT I'M NOT GOING TO DO, IF YOU LOOK ON THE BOTTOM, THERE'S A TAB FOR EVERY SCHOOL.

OBVIOUSLY THIS WOULD NOT BE THE SETTING TO GO THROUGH ALL THE TABS.

I'M JUST GOING TO HIGHLIGHT ONE SCHOOL AT EACH LEVEL, AND AGAIN I AM JUST LOOKING AT, FOR THE PURPOSES OF TONIGHT, THE HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION.

SO WE ARE IGNORING THE OTHER TWO GOALS JUST FOR THE FOR THIS PRESENTATION AT CAPTAIN WE HAVE THEIR IREADY MATH AND IREADY ELA SCORES.

SO THE REASON WHY YOU SEE BLANK COLUMNS IS BECAUSE WE ONLY GIVE THE IREADY ASSESSMENT THREE TIMES DURING THE YEAR, AND SO YOU CAN SEE THEIR FALL SCORES THERE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE AND THE IMPROVEMENT THERE IN THE MIDDLE.

[00:55:06]

FOR THEIR WINTER SCORES, AND YOU HAVE THIS LINK.

SO YOU COULD CLICK ON ALL SCHOOLS AND SEE THE SAME THING.

IF YOU COULD PLEASE CLICK ON CHIEF, AND SCROLL DOWN TO HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION.

THAT'S PERFECT, AND SO ONE THING THAT WE HAVE WITH THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS THAT WE DON'T HAVE WITH THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS IS WE'VE ADDED GRADES.

SO WE LOOK AT PERCENTAGE OF FAILING STUDENTS.

SO UP HERE ON THE TOP YOU CAN SEE EVERY SIX WEEKS BECAUSE THOSE ARE OUR GRADING PERIODS FIFTH GRADE, SIXTH GRADE, SEVENTH GRADE AND EIGHTH GRADE, AND YOU CAN LOOK ACROSS TO SEE, FOR EXAMPLE, FIFTH GRADE.

AT THE SIX WEEK MARK, 8% OF THE STUDENTS HAD ONE OR MORE F AND AT THE 18 WEEK MARK, AND SO WE HAVE SIX WEEK GRADING PERIODS.

EACH SEMESTER IS 18 WEEKS LONG.

AT THE 18 WEEK MARK, THAT PERCENTAGE WAS DOWN TO 2%.

ONE THING YOU WILL NOTICE IF YOU GO TO ALL THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS IS WE DO HAVE AN INCONSISTENT APPROACH TO GRADING FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL, AND I THINK THAT'S JUST A REALITY THAT WE AREN'T IGNORING, BUT YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THE COMPLEXITIES OF TRYING TO REALLY WORK, TO MAKE SURE A GRADE REFLECTS WHAT A STUDENT KNOWS.

WHEN WE'RE WORKING WITH EVERYONE HAS AN INDIVIDUAL APPROACH TO THAT AND SO THERE'S A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE AROUND MAKING SURE THAT OUR GRADES REFLECT WHAT A STUDENT KNOWS.

THE IREADY SCORES ARE HERE AS WELL FOR THE WINTER, EXCUSE ME, FALL AND WINTER, AND YOU CAN SEE THE GROWTH TAKING PLACE IN MOST AREAS. I MEAN, IF WE'RE BEING HONEST, LOOKING AT ELA SCORES AND I KNOW I'M PICKING ON CHIEF A LITTLE BIT, BUT SINCE THEY'RE NOT HERE TO DEFEND THEMSELVES, WE WILL FLAT SCORES IN A FEW GRADE LEVELS, AND I WILL SAY AGAIN, IT IS CHALLENGING, PARTICULARLY WHEN YOU GET TO THE SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE LEVEL.

IF YOU GIVE AN OPTIONAL TEST TO A MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT, SOMETIMES THEY WILL TREAT IT AS AN OPTIONAL TEST, AND THE CHALLENGE FOR US IS TO TRULY GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THEY KNOW, AND IF YOU COULD THEN CLICK ON BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

WELL, YOU REMIND US WHY IT'S OPTIONAL.

YES. THANK YOU.

SO FOR BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, THE KEY DATA WE HAVE, KEY DATA PIECE WE HAVE ARE GRADES, AND SO HERE'S THE SIX WEEK 12 WEEK AND SEMESTER.

YOU CAN SEE IF YOU JUST LOOK AT THE 12TH GRADE, 20% OF THE 12TH GRADE STUDENTS AT THE SIX WEEK MARK HAD ONE OR MORE F'S, AND THAT'S DOWN TO 8% AT THE SEMESTER, AND YOU SEE A DECREASE IN ALL FOUR GRADE LEVELS.

ONE THING THAT WE ARE ADDING, WORKING WITH MOLLY STICKLER TO GET THE DATA FOR ON TIME GRADUATION AT THE NINTH GRADE LEVEL AT THE END OF FIRST SEMESTER, FOR EVERY NINTH GRADER TO BE ON TRACK TO GRADUATE, THEY SHOULD HAVE THREE CREDITS, SO THEY TAKE SIX CLASSES A SEMESTER.

EACH CLASS IS 0.5 CREDITS.

SO AT THE END OF THAT FIRST SEMESTER THEY SHOULD HAVE THREE CREDITS.

SO ONE REPORT MOLLY IS WORKING ON I WAS WORKING WITH HER TODAY IS TO GENERATE A LIST OF ALL NINTH GRADERS WHO FALL UNDER THAT THREE CREDIT, AND THEN AGAIN, ALL 10TH GRADERS AT THE END OF FIRST SEMESTER SHOULD HAVE NINTH CREDITS AND SO ON, DOWN 11TH AND 12TH GRADE.

SO WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT IS TO SEE WHICH STUDENTS AND THAT 12TH GRADE NUMBER IS WRONG.

THAT SHOULD BE 21 CREDITS, WHICH STUDENTS ARE ON TRACK TO GRADUATE BY EARNING THOSE THREE CREDITS PER SEMESTER.

SO THAT'S I TALKED ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT WE HAVE REAL TIME DATA SO WE CAN RESPOND IN REAL TIME AND NOT JUST WAIT UNTIL THE END.

THE QUESTION AROUND THE IREADY, MAYBE OPTIONAL ISN'T A FAIR WORD, BUT IT'S NOT NECESSARILY ATTACHED TO A GRADE, AND I THINK SOME SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS DO DIFFERENT WORK WHEN IT COMES TO ATTACHING AN ASSESSMENT.

EXCUSE ME, AN INTERVENTION TO THAT IREADY DATA.

SO IF A STUDENT, IF SORA TAKES IREADY ELA AND FALLS BELOW GRADE LEVEL, THEN IN MANY CLASSROOMS AT MANY SCHOOLS, SORA WOULD THEN JUMP INTO AN INTERVENTION TO SUPPORT THE WORK TO MAKE SURE SHE GETS CAUGHT UP TO GRADE LEVEL.

IF THE CHALLENGE.

I THINK THE OLDER GRADE LEVELS THAT YOU GET MOTIVATION IS A REAL THING WHEN IT COMES TO IREADY ASSESSMENT, SMARTER BALANCE ASSESSMENT, AND SO WE DON'T WANT IT TO BE OPTIONAL. WE WOULD LOVE STUDENTS TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY, SO THEN WE CAN INTERVENE WHEN NEEDED AND WE CAN DETERMINE WHERE THEY'RE AT IN THEIR OWN LEARNING, BUT SOMETIMES THAT'S A CHALLENGE BECAUSE WE'RE DEALING WITH HUMANS, AND HUMANS ARE COMPLICATED.

THAT'S ABOUT AS MOST NON-ANSWER SPECIFIC ANSWER I CAN GIVE YOU, JACKIE.

[CHUCKLING] IT WAS PRETTY GOOD.

OKAY, JUST MADE THAT UP LIKE THE HUMAN PIECE.

ANY. SO I JUST WANT TO RESTATE AGAIN, THE PURPOSE OF THIS DISTRICT DATA OVERVIEW IS TO PROVIDE REAL TIME DATA EVERY SIX WEEKS, AND SO WE'RE NOT JUST WAITING UNTIL THAT SMARTER BALANCE DATA COMES OUT AT THE END OF A SCHOOL YEAR TO RESPOND.

[01:00:05]

REALLY APPRECIATE THAT SEEING THE DATA OVERVIEW, BECAUSE IT IS HARD WHEN WE SEE A THAT PEOPLE COME THROUGH WITH OUR IMPROVEMENT PLANS ONCE A YEAR AND GET THAT DATA PIECE IT. THIS REALLY GIVES US MORE OF A TRANSPARENT ONGOING LOOK AT IT.

SO THANK YOU FOR THAT CLARITY.

ALSO IN TERMS OF GRADES AND THIS IS JUST A QUESTION, DO YOU SEE US, IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THAT KIND OF CONTINUITY ACROSS THE DISTRICT, DO YOU SEE US MOVING TO STANDARDS BASED GRADING? I SEE US AND I'LL ACTUALLY BE IN FRONT OF YOU ALL NEXT MONTH WITH BOARD POLICY UPDATE AROUND OUR GRADING POLICY FOR NINTH GRADE THROUGH 12TH, AND I'LL GET INTO THAT MORE NEXT MONTH WHEN I'M HERE.

OKAY. I THINK WHAT I'M HOPEFUL AND OPTIMISTIC IS THAT WE CAN MOVE TOWARDS HAVING OUR GRADES REFLECT WHAT A STUDENT KNOWS AND THEN HAVE CONVERSATIONS AROUND IF IF WE TRULY WANT A GRADE TO REFLECT WHAT A STUDENT KNOWS, THEN WE NEED TO HAVE REAL CONVERSATIONS.

AS ADULTS, WHEN WE GIVE EXTRA CREDIT.

THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT CLASS, BECAUSE THEN THAT GRADE DOES TAKE ON A DIFFERENT LIFE.

WHEN WE TAKE POINTS OFF FOR ACCEPTING FOR LATE WORK, THAT GRADE NO LONGER NECESSARILY REFLECTS WHAT A STUDENT KNOWS, IT REFLECTS A STUDENT'S ABILITY TO TURN WORK IN ON TIME.

OR IF WE DO TEST RETAKES AND WE GIVE 50% CREDIT IF IT'S A TEST RETAKE, WHICH IS A COMMON PRACTICE HONESTLY, ACROSS THE COUNTRY, WHEN WE DO THAT, THAT GRADE NO LONGER REFLECTS WHAT A STUDENT KNOWS NECESSARILY.

SO WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS TURN THE SHIP BECAUSE IT'S A MIGHTY SHIP TO TURN, AND I WILL GO INTO DETAILS ON THE WORK I DID LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR TO FOCUS ON NINTH GRADE THROUGH 12TH, BECAUSE I THINK THAT'S THE MOST COMPLICATED, TO BE HONEST, I WOULD SAY OUR PRIMARY TEACHERS ARE PROBABLY AND I DON'T WANT TO SPEAK FOR THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS BECAUSE I DON'T WORK DIRECTLY WITH THEM.

I WOULD SAY THEY'RE PROBABLY VERY CLOSELY ALIGNED TO STANDARDS BASED GRADING.

WOULD YOU AGREE, MIKE? AND OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS ARE PROBABLY A LITTLE CLOSER TO THAT IN OUR HIGH SCHOOLS MIGHT BE THE FURTHEST AWAY, AND THAT'S NOT A CRITIQUE ON THE HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS AT ALL.

THANK YOU. THAT ANSWERS MY QUESTION.

IT'S KIND OF FUNNY, TOO, THAT THE STANDARDS BASED GRADING CAN GET A LITTLE MIXED UP AS TO WHAT IT MEANS.

MR. DRAKE AND I HAVE TALKED A LOT ABOUT THIS, AND THERE'S NOTHING WORSE FOR A KID WHO'S REALLY DECIDED THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BECOME SERIOUS, AND I NOTICED THAT SERIOUS STUDENTS TAKE THESE THESE TESTS SERIOUSLY.

SO IT'S A SHAME TO WITHHOLD THEM BECAUSE SOME STUDENTS DON'T.

SO SERIOUS STUDENTS ARE VERY INTERESTED TO SEE THEIR OWN GROWTH, AND WHEN THEY'RE NOT AT GRADE LEVEL, IF THEY DON'T, IF THEY'RE NOT THE STANDARD AND THEN THEY, THEY WORK REALLY HARD BECAUSE THEY WERE WAY FAR AWAY FROM THE STANDARD, LIKE A SIXTH GRADE STUDENT AND AN EIGHTH GRADE MATH CLASS, OKAY.

THEY GET UP, THEY MAKE ALL KINDS OF PROGRESS, AND GUESS WHAT? THE STANDARDS BASED TEST SAYS YOU'RE STILL NOT AT STANDARD.

YOU'RE LIKE, IT'S YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON HERE.

YOU KNOW, AND THEY JUST HAD A SUCCESSFULLY AMAZING YEAR.

SO, GROWING AND LEARNING IS WHAT THE GRADE SHOULD REFLECT KIND OF A THING I AM TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY WITH THIS.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU GUYS, IF YOU, DID YOU STEAL THIS FROM SOMEBODY ELSE.

DID YOU GUYS MAKE THIS UP? WE I DON'T SEE I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY ELSE WHO'S DOING ANYTHING LIKE THIS.

THERE'S A STRONG TEAM DOWNSTAIRS AT DISTRICT OFFICE WHO COMPILES ALL THIS DATA.

THIS IS GOOD STUFF.

IS THERE? THIS IS.

YES. OKAY. SO IS THERE ANY PLAN TO CIRCLE BACK ON THE STATE TEST? RIGHT. TO LOOK AT OUR CLASSROOM ASSESSMENTS, AND IF WE SEE LIKE REALLY POWERFUL GOOD GRADES IN THE CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT, BUT WE DON'T SEE PROGRESS GOING WHERE WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE GOING.

ARE THERE PLANS TO CIRCLE BACK ON THAT AND ADJUST OUR CLASSROOM ASSESSMENTS TO MAYBE REFLECT A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT WHERE WE NEED TO BE RATHER THAN WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS A GOOD IDEA? I WOULD SAY RIGHT NOW WE HAVE POCKETS OF THAT HAPPENING.

I CAN USE TUKES VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL AS AN EXAMPLE.

THEY'RE WORKING REALLY HARD TO ALIGN SMARTER BALANCED.

INTERIM ASSESSMENTS TO THE SMARTER BALANCE TEST SO THAT THEY'RE USING THE SMARTER BALANCE INTERIM ASSESSMENTS TO DETERMINE HOW STUDENTS ARE DOING ACADEMICALLY, AND YOU KNOW, I THINK OVERALL THERE'S BEEN AGAIN, POCKETS.

SO WE DON'T HAVE ANY WE DON'T HAVE A DISTRICT WIDE MOVEMENT YET, BUT WE WILL OF DETERMINING IF A STUDENT IF A STUDENT IS PASSING THE SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENTS, BUT THEIR GRADES AREN'T PASSING, THEN HAVING A CONVERSATION AROUND THAT, BECAUSE AS WE ALL KNOW, SOME OF OUR SMARTEST, MOST INTELLIGENT STUDENTS SOMETIMES STRUGGLE TO PLAY SCHOOL WELL IN A TRADITIONAL LENS.

RIGHT? WHICH IS WHY I THINK IT'S SO VALUABLE THAT WE HAVE ALL OF OUR ALTERNATIVE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES.

ONE LAST QUESTION. IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY YOU THINK THAT WE WOULD EVER HAVE STANDARDIZED CLASSROOM ASSESSMENTS THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS, FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL? IT'S ONE THING TO HAVE THE PLC AT ONE SCHOOL HAVE STANDARD TESTS, BUT NOW THE OTHER SCHOOL IS DOING DIFFERENT TESTS, YOU KNOW.

[01:05:07]

SO YEAH, I DO.

I THINK I DON'T WE'RE REALLY CLOSE ACTUALLY IN MATH.

WE, WE HAVE WE JUST HAD A MEETING LAST WEEK, MAYBE TWO WEEKS AGO WITH EIGHTH GRADE AND HIGH SCHOOL MATH TEACHERS, AND I KNOW YOU'RE A FORMER MATH TEACHER YOURSELF, TERRY, AND WHAT THEY'VE COME IS THEY'VE COME UP WITH A COMMON ASSESSMENT FOR EIGHTH GRADE MATH STUDENTS THAT THEY'RE GOING TO USE DISTRICT WIDE.

I THINK ELA IS PROBABLY SHORTLY WILL FOLLOW THEM SHORTLY.

THE OTHER CONTENT AREAS WILL BE A LITTLE BIT MORE CHALLENGING, FOR OBVIOUS REASONS, BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF VARIETY AND ELECTIVES AND THINGS LIKE THAT, BUT I DO THINK THAT WE'RE MOVING IN THAT DIRECTION. THIS IS AMAZINGLY GOOD WORK.

THANK YOU. I CANNOT TAKE CREDIT FOR IT, BUT I'LL STAND UP HERE AND SAY THEY DESERVE LOTS OF COFFEE CARDS AND THINGS.

OKAY, I THINK I WOULD JUST GOING TO SAY TRAVIS WOULD NEVER TAKE ANY CREDIT FOR ANY OF THIS, BUT THE WORK HE AND MIKE DO WITH OUR BUILDING LEADERSHIP IS PRETTY AMAZING, BECAUSE WHAT IT CREATES IS CALIBRATION BETWEEN BUILDINGS, WHICH IS WHAT SETS THE GROUNDWORK FOR A COMMON ASSESSMENT ACROSS THE SYSTEM AND I THINK PUTTING DATA IN FRONT OF PEOPLE, HOW IT HELPS THEM STAY FOCUSED ON BEING RESULTS ORIENTED, AND REALLY IT'S ABOUT THE RESULTS AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE AFTER, BUT IT'S A PROCESS BECAUSE EVERYBODY JUST LIKE OUR KIDS, WE ALL LEARN AT DIFFERENT RATES AND WE WE'RE BETTER AT DIFFERENT THINGS THAN OTHERS, AND SO IT IS A STRONG TEAM, BUT I WANT TO THANK BOTH MIKE AND TRAVIS FOR THE WORK THAT THEY'RE DOING WITH THE BUILDING LEADERS, BECAUSE THEY THEN WORK WITH THE BUILDING LEADERSHIP, WHO THEN WORKS WITH THEIR TEAMS DURING PLC TIME, AND THE PLC TIME IS CRITICAL TO THIS WORK.

SO IT'S ALL TIED TOGETHER.

THANK YOU. OKAY. THANK YOU.

WELL, THAT WAS JUST ME.

THEY MAY HAVE SOME QUESTIONS.

JACKIE DIDN'T MAKE EYE CONTACT, SO WE'RE OUT OF TIME.

WE HIT OUR 15 MINUTES.

NO, NO. WE HOPE THAT YOU'LL YOU'LL KEEP THAT LINK HANDY AND GO BACK IN AND CHECK THIS IS COOL STUFF.

CHECK ON IT PERIODICALLY.

LIKE TRAVIS INDICATED, ALL THE SCHOOLS ARE ON THERE.

SUMMIT VIEW HAVE MENTIONED YOUR CONCERNS REGARDING DISCIPLINE BEHAVIOR IN THE SCHOOLS.

THOSE BEHAVIOR STATS ARE IN THERE.

THOSE ARE ACTUALLY MORE UP TO DATE THAN THE ACADEMIC ONES.

THE ACADEMIC ONES WE'RE OFTEN WAITING FOR TESTING DATA TO GET BACK TO US, BUT THEY'RE UPDATED PERIODICALLY.

TRAVIS SENDS THEM OUT ON AND MIKE SENDS THEM OUT ON A REGULAR BASIS.

SO COULD WE GET THAT LINK, MAYBE IN AN EMAIL? IT'S, I GUESS, BEING LAZY, I DON'T USUALLY GO BACK INTO BOARD DOCS.

MAKE SURE WE SEND IT OUT TO YOU.

SO THEN IT'S JUST EASIER TO FIND.

THANK YOU. WELL, ACTUALLY LABEL THE EMAIL.

SO WHEN YOU SEARCH FOR LAZY LINK FOR JACKIE.

[CHUCKLING] LAZY LINK FOR JACKIE.

ANYTHING ELSE FROM TEACHING AND LEARNING? THAT'S IT. OKAY, WE'RE GOING TO SHIFT OVER TO OUR HR DEPARTMENT.

MICHELLE REINHARDT. OKAY.

WELL GOOD EVENING BOARD.

JUST A COUPLE OF THINGS TO SHARE.

IT'S BEEN A BUSY COUPLE OF WEEKS IN HR, AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO GET BUSY.

WE ARE WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE BUSINESS OFFICE ON STAFFING AND IDENTIFYING STAFFING NEEDS FOR NEXT YEAR.

YOU WILL ALSO NOTICE OVER THE NEXT MONTH OR TWO ON BOARD REPORTS, YOU'LL SEE A LOT OF RETIREMENTS, AND THAT'S ALWAYS YOU KNOW, A BITTERSWEET THING.

WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE DISTRICT FOR MANY, MANY YEARS, AND SO YOU'LL JUST START TO SEE THAT OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT COUPLE OF COUPLE OF MONTHS, AND WE AGAIN, A BITTERSWEET THING, BUT WE ARE EXCITED FOR SOME OF THESE INDIVIDUALS TO START A NEW CAREER AS A RETIREE, AS TERRY IS FAMILIAR WITH.

IT IS. YEAH, THAT'S WHAT I'VE HEARD.

THE NEXT THING I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU IS IT IS EDUCATOR SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS WEEK, AND THIS IS ALSO KNOWN AS CLASSIFIED APPRECIATION WEEK. WE KNOW THAT OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF HOW MUCH THEY CONTRIBUTE TO OUR STUDENTS LIVES, HOW MUCH THEY CONTRIBUTE TO JUST THE ORGANIZATION AND RUNNING OF OUR BUILDINGS.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE CLASSIFIED STAFF IN OUR DISTRICT, THEY ARE NOT ONLY IN CLASSROOMS, ON PLAYGROUNDS, DOING SUPERVISION OR SECURITY.

WE HAVE MAINTENANCE WORKERS, WE HAVE OFFICE STAFF, WE HAVE AND THAT DISTRICT OFFICE AND IN EVERY BUILDING, AND IT'S JUST YOU NAME IT, WE COULDN'T DO THE WORK WITHOUT THEM, AND SO IT'S ALWAYS ALWAYS AN HONOR FOR US TO BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE THE HARD WORK, AND GOVERNOR INSLEE ACTUALLY HAS DEDICATED THE ENTIRE MONTH OF MARCH AS EDUCATOR SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS WEEK.

WE ARE FOCUSING THIS WEEK ON HONORING THEM, AND MANY OF OUR BUILDINGS AND DEPARTMENTS AND SCHOOLS ARE FINDING DIFFERENT WAYS TO RECOGNIZE THEM, AND

[01:10:09]

SO I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE THE PROCLAMATION WITH YOU.

THIS IS FROM GOVERNOR JAY INSLEE.

SO WHEREAS EDUCATION SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS ARE INVOLVED IN NEARLY EVERY ASPECT OF EDUCATION, MAINTAINING BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS, PREPARING AND SERVING MEALS, KEEPING SCHOOL FACILITIES CLEAN AND ORDERLY, ASSISTING IN THE CLASSROOM, PROVIDING OVER 60% OF ALL INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS TO SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS, ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, AND OPPORTUNITY GAP STUDENTS PERFORMING AND CONDUCTING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES.

PROVIDING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND MEDIA SERVICES, ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT FUNCTIONS AND SAFE TRANSPORTATION, CREATING A SECURE AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT, AND MANY OTHER SPECIALIZED SERVICES AND WHEREAS MORE THAN 62,000 EDUCATION SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS WORK WITH AND HELP STUDENTS AT WASHINGTON'S UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE THE BACKBONE OF OUR PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM AND DESERVE RECOGNITION AND THANKS FOR THE OUTSTANDING WORK THEY THEY DO FOR THIS STATE, AND WHEREAS EDUCATION SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS ARE INSTRUMENTAL IN FULFILLING THE STATE'S RESPONSIBILITY TO EDUCATE ALL STUDENTS, AND BY SUPPORTING THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, THEY SERVE AS CRUCIAL PARTNERS WITH TEACHERS, PARENTS, ADMINISTRATORS AND SCHOOL BOARDS.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JAY INSLEE, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM MARCH 2024 AS EDUCATION SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS MONTH.

LET'S GO AHEAD AND GIVE A ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO ALL OF OUR.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU, MICHELLE.

NEXT IS OUR FINANCE REPORT FROM OUR CFO, MICHELLE SCOTT.

GOOD EVENING, BOARD.

FISCAL UPDATES ON THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION AS.

HOLD TIGHT. YEAH.

WELL, AS SHELLY MENTIONED, THERE'S STILL A LOT THAT WE'RE UNPACKING, AND IT'S.

I CANNOT GO OVER EVERYTHING TONIGHT, AND YOU'LL HAVE A BETTER REPORT LATER ON.

OSPI WILL BE MEETING WITH ALL THE FINANCE DIRECTORS ON MARCH 27TH TO REALLY DIG INTO THE DETAILS A LITTLE BIT MORE.

SO THEY WERE VERY BUSY, THOUGH; THEY ADOPTED 399 BILLS.

THERE ARE SOME THAT IMPACT US FISCALLY THAT WILL HELP IN SMALL WAYS, BUT THERE'S NO REAL GROWTH IN FUNDING THAT HAS COME FROM THIS.

THE FROM THIS LEGISLATIVE SESSION, THERE IS THE CAPITAL BUDGET HAD A NICE FINALLY A NICE INCREASE IN THE CONSTRUCTION COST ALLOWANCE AVAILABLE TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

SO THAT WILL REALLY HELP WITH THE SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AND SOME OF THAT MATCHING THE INFLATIONARY INCREASE FOR SALARIES WAS 3.7%.

THE INFLATIONARY INCREASE FOR MATERIAL SUPPLIES AND OPERATING COSTS WAS 1.9%, AND THERE IS GOING TO BE A SMALL LITTLE ADJUSTMENT FOR 23-24, WHICH IS HELPFUL, BUT AGAIN IT'S WE ARE EXPERIENCING AS MANY HOUSEHOLDS ARE INCREASES IN OUR UTILITY BILLS AND OTHER SERVICES, AND SO THAT WILL GET PROBABLY GOBBLED UP RIGHT AWAY WITH, WITH ALL OF THOSE INCREASES.

SO WE DID THERE WAS HOUSE BILL 1248 HAS PASSED, WHICH IS GOING TO REQUIRE SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT CONTRACT FOR TRANSPORTATION TO PROVIDE IN THE CONTRACT COMPARABLE HEALTH CARE AND RETIREMENT BENEFITS.

SO COMPARABLE, AND SO THIS WILL BE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT TO US UPON RENEWAL OF OUR CONTRACT.

OUR CONTRACT IS NOT RENEWING UNTIL THE 26-27 SCHOOL YEAR.

SO WE WILL NEED TO PLAN FOR THAT.

SO, AND IT'LL BE INTERESTING.

THERE REALLY WASN'T ANY FUNDING TIED TO IT.

I MEAN, THERE WAS A SMALL AMOUNT, BUT I IT'S JUST A DROP IN THE BUCKET, REALLY, FROM OUR PROJECTIONS.

SO ANYHOW THERE WERE ALSO SOME POLICY UPDATES WITH SCHOOLS, AS MARY HAS MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY, AND WHY THOSE DON'T HAVE FISCAL IMPACT.

THEY MAY DOWN THE ROAD FOR US, AND SO WE WILL BE MONITORING THOSE THINGS AS WELL.

SO THAT'S ALL I HAVE.

THANK YOU, AND CERTAINLY LAST BUT NOT LEAST, COMMUNICATIONS AMANDA RICHTER.

[01:15:31]

HELLO? OKAY.

I'VE HAD STAFF AND STUDENTS IN THE NEWS RECENTLY.

THE REFLECTOR HAD AN ARTICLE ON HOW HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS ARE FILLING THE GAP AND HELPING PREPARE WORKERS IN THE SKILLED TRADES, SO THAT INCLUDED SOME INFORMATION ABOUT OUR CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS THAT CINDY ARNOLD SPOKE TO AND SHARED HOW THE CAPITAL LEVY WILL IMPACT THAT.

THE REFLECTOR ALSO FEATURED SOME CASEE STUDENTS WHO WORKED WITH THE LEWIS RIVER ROTARY TO CLEAR OUT WEEDS FROM WOODEN CREEK AND PLANT NATIVE PLANTS, AND THEY ALSO DID AN ARTICLE ON THE STUDENT THAT JULIA SPOKE ABOUT, SERENA HUGHES, WHO CHOSE TO SIGN TO PLAY SOFTBALL IN COLLEGE, AND SHE CHOSE TO SIGN AT RIVER HOMELINK BECAUSE THAT IS HER SCHOOL.

SO CONGRATS TO HER, AND NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE.

ONE OF OUR RECENT BGPS BULLETIN ISSUES FEATURED BLACK HISTORY MONTH ACTIVITIES AT PRAIRIE AND BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, AND THEN WE ALSO HAD A RECENT BG CAST EPISODE THAT TALKED ABOUT CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION AGAIN, AND ALSO THE INDUSTRY FAIR.

NEXT SLIDE. CAM ACADEMY HAS NOT ONE BUT TWO NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS.

SO CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHN AND HANNAH.

THEY ARE BOTH IN THE RUNNING NOW FOR THE NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR TITLE, AND THEN THE MOST RECENT ISSUE OF THE BGPS BULLETIN FEATURED A STORY ON BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL'S NEWLY RESURRECTED STUDENT NEWSPAPER CALLED THE TIGER TIMES, AND CHRIS BROWN WROTE A REALLY NICE STORY THAT TALKS ABOUT HOW THEY'RE ADDRESSING SOME OF THE TRICKY ISSUES AROUND JOURNALISM IN TODAY'S CLIMATE AND NEXT SLIDE, AND THEN A COUPLE UPCOMING EVENTS, OF COURSE.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL JUNIOR PERFORMED BY RIVER HOMELINK THE CERAMIC SHOWDOWN, WHICH YOU HEARD ABOUT AT THE LAST MEETING, AND THEN ALSO THE COLLEGE AND CAREER FAIR ON MARCH 21ST, WHICH IS OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS IN THE DISTRICT AND THE COMMUNITY AS WELL.

THANK YOU.

ANY QUESTIONS FOR STAFF? THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THAT'S IT FOR US.

ALL RIGHT. THAT BRINGS US TO CITIZENS COMMENTS.

[7. Citizens' Comments]

WE HAVE FIVE CITIZENS SIGNED UP TONIGHT.

EACH CITIZEN WILL HAVE THREE MINUTES TO SPEAK.

WE WILL HAVE WE USUALLY HAVE A TIMER ON THE TV, BUT SORA ALSO HAS THE 3O SECOND WARNING, AND THEN THE RED FLAG FOR WHEN YOU'RE OUT OF TIME.

I'M GOING TO WAIT JUST A SECOND TO SEE IF THAT COMES UP.

OKAY.

OKAY. JESSICA COLE.

HELLO, BOARD. MY NAME IS JESSICA COLE.

I'M A PARENT WITH ALUMNI AND WITHIN THE DISTRICT, AND I FIRST WANT TO SAY A VERY BELATED WELCOME TO DEBBIE AND TO TERRY, TO THE BOARD.

I KNOW THAT YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN HERE FOR QUITE A FEW MONTHS, BUT THANK YOU FOR WILLING TO BE ON OUR BOARD.

THANKS. THANK YOU.

I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU I GOT PERMISSION FROM CONNOR SPRINGER'S MOTHER TO SHARE THIS WITH YOU.

HER NAME IS SARAH AND CONNOR.

WE MET THE FAMILY AT RIVER HOMELINK, AND IN DECEMBER CONNOR DIED OF A CAR.

CONNOR DIED IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT IN DECEMBER, AND THEY JUST HAD HIS MEMORIAL A FEW WEEKS AGO, AND ME AND JULIE WERE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT CONNOR.

BOTH OUR FAMILIES KNEW HIM WHEN WE WERE AT THE CELEBRATION FOR [INAUDIBLE] LAST MONTH OR WHENEVER THAT WAS, AND SARAH GAVE ME PERMISSION TO READ HIS FROM HIS MEMORIAL WHATEVER YOU CALL THESE THINGS.

CONNOR SPRINGER LEFT THIS EARTH TOO SOON ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20TH, 2023.

[01:20:03]

HE WAS 21 YEARS OLD.

FROM THE EARLIEST DAYS OF HIS LIFE, CONNOR'S UNIQUENESS WAS APPARENT TO ALL WHO KNEW HIM.

HIS PASSION FOR ADVENTURE, SPEED, AND THE WORLD OF TRUCKS AND MOTORCYCLES WAS NOT JUST A HOBBY, BUT A PART OF HIS VERY ESSENCE.

YET CONNOR WAS MORE THAN JUST AN ADVENTURER.

HE POSSESSED A WISDOM BEYOND HIS YEARS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT CAME TO CARING FOR OTHERS.

HE WAS A YOUNG MAN COMMITTED TO THE PURSUIT OF SELF-REFLECTION AND PERSONAL GROWTH, NURTURING HIS MIND, BODY, AND SOUL.

CONNOR LOVED LIFE.

HE WAS WILLING TO DREAM BIG DREAMS AND HIS STRONG WORK ETHIC, UNWAVERING DEVOTION TO HIS FAMILY, THOSE HE LOVED US FAMILY, AND HIS LOYALTY TO HIS FRIENDS WERE TESTAMENTS TO HIS CHARACTER.

CONNOR'S CAPACITY TO LOVE DEEPLY AND THE JOY HE FOUND IN AFFIRMING AND SHOWING AFFECTION TO OTHERS, WERE QUALITIES THAT ALL WHO WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO EXPERIENCE WILL FOREVER HOLD DEAR.

HIS LEGACY, A LEGACY WE SHALL ALL STRIVE TO EMULATE, IS THE PURE, UNINHIBITED, UNINHIBITED LOVE HE SHARED WITH THE WORLD.

CONNOR IS SURVIVED BY HIS LOVING MOTHER, SARAH, HIS DEVOTED FATHERS, ROY AND LYNN, AND HIS CHERISHED BROTHER AND HIS WIFE, WYATT AND GABBY, AND I CAN'T PUT INTO WORDS TO EXPRESS REALLY, ELOQUENTLY, TRULY HOW CONNOR IMPACTED ME PERSONALLY, BUT HE WAS TRULY THE MOST LOVING AND ACCEPTING HUMAN BEING I HAVE EVER MET, AND I JUST WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU THAT HE WAS A STUDENT HERE, AND I JUST WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU ABOUT HIM.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

EUNICE [INAUDIBLE].

GOOD EVENING BOARD.

MY NAME IS EUNICE [INAUDIBLE] AND MY PRONOUNS ARE SHE HER.

I LIVE IN THIS DISTRICT.

FIRST, A BRIEF FOLLOW UP ON MY COMMENT LAST MONTH ABOUT BRAVER ANGELS.

[INAUDIBLE] UNITED IS HOSTING A DOCUMENTARY VIEWING AND DISCUSSION ABOUT THE FILM REUNITING AMERICA.

THIS IS A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH AND DISCUSS THE MOVIE IN A COMMUNITY.

I'M LEAVING FLYER IN YOUR HANDS TO REMIND YOU OF THE EVENT.

THERE WILL BE A FEW MORE FLYERS AT THE ON THE CHAIR CLOSEST TO THE EXIT.

IF ANYBODY ELSE IS INTERESTED IN DEPOLARIZING OUR COMMUNITY, I SUGGESTED THAT THE SKILLS TAUGHT AND PROMOTED BY BETTER ANGELS GET FOLDED INTO SOCIAL STUDIES, BUT REALLY, WHATEVER YOU DO TO INCORPORATE THIS INTO THE LIFESTYLE OF BATTLE GROUND YOUTH WILL BE DEEPLY APPRECIATED.

WITH THAT, I WOULD LIKE TO MOVE ON TO MY NEXT POINT.

I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO STEPHEN CHBOSKY'S BOOK, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, WRITTEN 25 YEARS AGO.

IT'S A COMING OF AGE NOVEL, WRITTEN LIKE A SERIES OF LETTERS IN WHICH A 15 YEAR OLD CHARLIE CONFIDES HIS EXPERIENCES, FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS.

SUBJECT MATTERS INCLUDE BECOMING SEXUALLY AWARE AND ACTIVE, FALLING IN LOVE, DATE RAPE, CONSENT AND WHAT A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP IS, AND ALSO DRUG SMOKING AND ALCOHOL, AND READING BOOKS AND PROCESSING LITERATURE AND MATURING INTELLECTUALLY.

THIS BOOK HAS SOLD MILLIONS OF COPIES IN 31 LANGUAGES, BUT BECAUSE OF THE TOPICS THAT IT DEALS WITH, IT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE TEN MOST CHALLENGED BOOKS IN SCHOOL LIBRARIES FOR MANY YEARS.

WHILE I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS BOOK CONTAINS SOME DISTURBING SCENES, I ALSO RECOGNIZE THAT LIFE FOR MOST OF US CONTAINS DISTURBING SCENES AND CHAPTERS.

TRANSITIONING FROM CHILDHOOD TO ADULTHOOD IS A COMPLICATED BUSINESS.

I THINK HAVING A VIRTUAL FRIEND LIKE CHARLIE WILL GIVE OUR YOUTH HIS EXPERIENCES UNDER THEIR BELT AND LIGHT THEIR WAY BY HELPING THEM IDENTIFY ISSUES AS THEY COME UP.

HAVING GROWN UP WITH CHARLIE, THEY WILL BE MORE READY TO MAKE WISER DECISIONS AND LIVE HEALTHIER AND SAFER RELATIONSHIPS THAN THEY WOULD HAVE IF NOBODY TOLD THEM ABOUT THE THINGS THAT COULD HAPPEN ON THEIR WAY TO ADULTHOOD.

[01:25:07]

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MAKING SURE THAT THERE ARE ENOUGH COPIES OF THIS BOOK IN OUR HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARIES.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

THANK YOU. BUFFY SPARGER.

SAID THAT, CORRECT? HI, I'M BUFFY SPARGER AND I HAVE A STUDENT IN PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.

I WANT TO THANK THE BOARD AHEAD OF TIME FOR ANY CONSIDERATION OF THOSE THAT HAVE SPOKEN AT THESE MEETINGS AND THOSE THAT WILL CONTINUE TO SPEAK AT THESE MEETINGS.

I'M HERE AGAIN THIS EVENING TO ENCOURAGE THE BOARD TO PUT INTO PLACE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, A POLICY OR REVISE EXISTING POLICY THAT GIVES GUIDANCE AND CLARITY TO THOSE WITHIN THE DISTRICT THAT WOULD REVIEW LIBRARY BOOKS THAT ARE SUBMITTED FOR REVIEW BY CONCERNED PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

ON FEBRUARY 9TH, I MET WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARIAN AND THE PRINCIPAL OF PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL, ALONG WITH THE DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM.

WE HAD A VERY INFORMATIVE MEETING TO CLARIFY MY ONE AND ONLY QUESTION.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR HAVING A BOOK OF CONCERN PULLED AND REVIEWED AT THIS SCHOOL? AFTER THREE EMAILS FROM ME WITH EITHER NO OR A VAGUE RESPONSE, A MEETING WAS CALLED BY THESE LADIES WITH ME TO ANSWER WHAT I DEEMED A PRETTY SIMPLE AND UNCOMPLICATED QUESTION.

DURING THE COURSE OF THE MEETING, I WAS ADVISED OF THE PROCESS AND TOLD THAT IN 12 YEARS, ONE BOOK, JUST ONE BOOK WAS SUBMITTED FOR REQUEST TO REVIEW.

THIS DOES NOT TELL ME AS A PARENT THAT WE DON'T HAVE AN ISSUE.

IT TELLS ME THAT WE DIDN'T KNOW BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF BOOKS I FOUND TO BE IN BOTH HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARIES.

ALSO, IN THE COURSE OF THE MEETING, I ASKED WHAT THE POLICY WAS FOR REVIEW OF A BOOK THAT CONTAINS EROTIC, SEXUALLY GRAPHIC AND/OR OBSCENE MATERIAL.

I WAS TOLD THERE IS NOT ONE IN PLACE, AT LEAST NOT SPECIFIC TO THIS TYPE OF MATERIAL.

SO I SUBMIT TO YOU THAT AT SOME POINT, SOMEHOW AND IN SOME WAY, BOOKS OF THIS NATURE HAVE BEEN ORDERED, DONATED OR REQUESTED AND PLACED INTO OUR HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARIES.

WHY? I'M GOING TO READ A BOOK EXCERPT FROM A BOOK IN BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

IT'S EXTREMELY EROTIC AND OBSCENE.

READY? THE TIGHT BLACK CURLS OF HIS PUBIC HAIR SURROUNDED HIS ERECTION.

IT'S WET, TIPPED AND URGENT, AND YOU STROKE IT WITH YOUR FINGERS, FIND HIS PENIS AND GUIDE IT TOWARD THE ENTRANCE OF YOUR VAGINA.

IT FEELS THICK THERE, SORT OF SCARY, AND THERE'S A MOMENT WHEN YOU WONDER HOW ON EARTH IT WILL FIT INSIDE.

SHALL I CONTINUE? THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

[INAUDIBLE]. GOOD EVENING, BOARD. MY NAME IS ALI [INAUDIBLE].

I AM A MOTHER BUSINESS OWNER.

I DON'T REMEMBER MY WHOLE SPIEL.

I DIDN'T INTEND TO TALK TONIGHT, BUT I WAS SO INSPIRED AND GRATEFUL FOR THE YOUTH FROM SUMMIT VIEW HIGH SCHOOL THAT I NEEDED TO SHARE MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH SUMMIT VIEW.

HIGH SCHOOL. AS [INAUDIBLE] CAN ATTEST TO ONE OF MY CHILDREN SHE STRUGGLES IN A TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, AND IF THERE WAS NOT SUMMIT VIEW HIGH SCHOOL AVAILABLE FOR HER, SHE WOULD HAVE DROPPED OUT.

WE NEED WE NEED THESE SCHOOLS THAT ARE NOT TRADITIONAL MODELS.

FOR KIDS LIKE MINE.

I HAVE TWO KIDS, AND THEY'RE ON POLAR OPPOSITE ENDS.

WHEN IT COMES TO THIS SHELLY CAN ATTEST TO MY OLDER ONE.

IT'S SO IMPORTANT THAT WE GIVE OUR KIDS WHAT THEY NEED, AND PLACES LIKE SUMMIT VIEW, RIVER, HOMELINK, CAM, SOME OF THESE OTHER ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS, THEY MAKE SURE THAT OUR KIDS GRADUATE.

MY DAUGHTER MIGHT NOT GRADUATE UNTIL SHE'S 21, BUT SHE WILL GRADUATE, I HOPE, AND THE ONLY CHANCE SHE HAS IS BECAUSE SHE COULD NOT.

IT'S NOT THAT SHE'S NOT SMART.

SHE'S WICKED SMART, IS SHE NOT? SHE COULDN'T HANDLE THAT ENVIRONMENT, AND IT WAS OVERWHELMING, AND JUST LIKE SOME OF THE KIDS SAID TONIGHT LIFE IS MESSY AND IT GETS HARD, AND IF YOU CAN'T MANAGE HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THINGS, YOU CAN'T LEARN AND BEING ABLE TO BE IN AN

[01:30:02]

ENVIRONMENT THAT ALLOWS YOU TO LEARN, AND THEN ONE THAT ALSO USES THE MASTERY BASED LEARNING SO THAT IT REALLY IS ABOUT WHAT THEY KNOW NOT HOW GOOD THEY DO ON A TEST OR HOW MANY ASSIGNMENTS THEY TURN IN.

THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT, I THINK, FOR ALL KIDS, BUT ESPECIALLY KIDS LIKE MINE.

SO I THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THESE ALTERNATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS.

BECAUSE WE HAVE ANOTHER ONE THAT WILL GRADUATE THAT WOULD NOT HAVE WITHOUT IT.

SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

THANK YOU. JENNIFER [INAUDIBLE].

GOOD EVENING.

I'D LIKE TO ECHO EVERYTHING SHE SAID ABOUT THE ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS, BUT I DIDN'T COME HERE TONIGHT TO TALK ABOUT THE ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS.

I, TOO, WOULD LIKE TO AGAIN URGE THE BOARD TO RECONSIDER OR TO CONSIDER THE AMENDMENTS TO THE LIBRARY POLICY THAT WE HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT.

I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND YOU THAT ACCORDING TO THE US DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, HARMFUL MATERIALS FOR MINORS INCLUDE ANY COMMUNICATION CONSISTING OF NUDITY, SEX, OR EXCRETION THAT APPEALS TO THE PRURIENT INTERESTS OF MINORS IS PATENTLY OFFENSIVE TO PREVAILING STANDARDS IN THE ADULT COMMUNITY WITH RESPECT TO WHAT IS SUITABLE MATERIAL FOR MINORS, AND LACKS SERIOUS LITERARY, ARTISTIC, POLITICAL OR SCIENTIFIC VALUE FOR MINORS. I WAS GOING TO READ A QUOTE, AND HONESTLY I'M NOT REALLY GOOD WITH READING EROTICA, BUT I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT A COUPLE OF BOOKS THAT HAVE ALSO BEEN FOUND IN THE LIBRARY, AND THEY'RE FURTHER EVIDENCE THAT WE NEED A POLICY.

THERE'S ONE CALLED TRICKS, AND IS DESCRIBED AS A COLLECTION OF FIVE STORIES ABOUT THREE GIRLS AND TWO BOYS WHO QUESTION HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT THEMSELVES WHILE LEARNING ABOUT LOVE AND SEXUALITY, OR CONVERSELY, WHICH IS ALSO A DESCRIPTION.

IT SAYS FIVE TROUBLED TEENS FALL INTO PROSTITUTION AS THEY SEARCH FOR FREEDOM, SAFETY, COMMUNITY, FAMILY AND LOVE, AND I READ THROUGH THE BOOK AND IT IS LITERALLY THE WHOLE THING IS ABOUT SEX.

THERE'S ANOTHER BOOK CALLED UGLY LOVE, WHICH STATES, TATE COLLINS AND MILES ARCHER THINK THAT THEY CAN BOTH HANDLE JUST A PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP, BUT AFTER TIME, TATE FINDS THAT SHE CAN'T STICK TO MILES.

TWO RULES. NEVER ASK ABOUT THE PAST AND DON'T EXPECT A FUTURE.

I WOULD ARGUE THAT A BOOK THAT HAS THESE TYPE OF VALUES IS NOT REFLECTIVE OF OUR COMMUNITY.

EROTIC AND OBSCENE MATERIAL.

AGAIN, IT'S NOT PROTECTED SPEECH.

PORN ADDICTION IS A HUGE PROBLEM AMONGST OUR YOUNG PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY, AND IF ANY OF OUR STUDENTS TRIED TO ACCESS EITHER OF THESE BOOKS, ALONG WITH MANY OTHER BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY ON THEIR CHROMEBOOK, THEY COULDN'T BECAUSE OF THE PROTECTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE.

THESE BOOKS ARE ACCESSIBLE BY KIDS AS YOUNG AS 14 YEARS OLD, AND THE LEGISLATURE PASSED HB 2331 AND SB 5462 CONCERNING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS.

THIS MAKES THIS AN OPPORTUNE TIME TO AMEND THE LIBRARY POLICY.

IT WILL NEED TO BE AMENDED TO GO ALONG WITH THE NEW LAW.

SO I'M ASKING YOU, PLEASE, PLEASE CONSIDER THE AMENDMENT TO THE LAW, TO THE POLICY.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

ALL RIGHT, THAT WRAPS UP CITIZENS COMMENTS.

WE WILL BE MOVING ON TO OUR CONSENT AGENDA ON TONIGHT'S CONSENT AGENDA.

[8. Consent Agenda (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]

WE HAVE ITEMS A THROUGH E.

ARE THERE ANY APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA? APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM THE FEBRUARY 26TH MEETING, BUSINESS AND OPERATIONS PERSONNEL REPORTS AND STUDENT TRAVEL.

IS THERE ANY OF THESE AGENDA ITEMS ON THE THAT ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE FURTHER DISCUSSION ABOUT, OR HAVE REMOVED TO HAVE VOTED ON SEPARATELY? I JUST LIKE TO LIKE COMMENT ON THE STUDENT TRAVEL BECAUSE I LOVE LOOKING AT THE STUDENT TRAVEL.

I WAS JUST THINKING THAT YOU'RE GOING TO COMMENT ON THE STUDENT TRAVEL THIS THIS WEEK.

THERE'S A LOT OF COOL THINGS ON THERE.

SO I JUST WANTED TO POINT THEM OUT.

THERE'S THE CHESS CLUB.

LIKE MR. TATE WAS TALKING ABOUT GOING TO THE STATE COMPETITION IN BELLEVUE.

[01:35:04]

THE BATTLE GROUND HOSA TEAM IS GOING TO STATE IN SPOKANE, SO THAT'S SUPER COOL.

SKILLSUSA FROM BATTLE GROUND IS GOING TO THE STATE FAB CONTEST, WHICH I LOOKED AT AND IT'S ABOUT WELDING, SO THAT'S SUPER COOL TOO, AND THEN CAM'S GOING TO THE KNOWLEDGE BOWL STATE COMPETITION.

THE PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND IS GOING TO A FESTIVAL IN IDAHO IN MOSCOW, AND THEN THE PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM IS GOING TO A TEAM CAMP. SO THOSE ARE ALL SUPER FUN THINGS.

EXCITED FOR EVERYONE THAT'S GOING.

I JUST WANTED TO POINT ALL THOSE EXCITING EVENTS OUT.

I ALSO HEARD THAT CAM GOING TO THE KNOWLEDGE BOWL IS THE FIRST YEAR THEY EVER HAD A TEAM, AND THEY MADE IT TO STATE, SO THAT'S PRETTY COOL.

THAT IS REALLY COOL. VERY COOL.

I WANT YOU TO KNOW, SIR, THAT EVERY TIME I LOOK AT STUDENT TRAVEL NOW, I THINK ABOUT IT.

GOOD. ANY OTHER AREAS OF DISCUSSION FOR THE CONSENT AGENDA? SO I MOVE THAT WE ACCEPT THE APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.

ALL RIGHT, SO WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.

I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENTS FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.

SO ANY FURTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.

AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 4 TO 0.

THERE IS NO OLD BUSINESS TONIGHT, AND OUR FIRST ITEM OF NEW BUSINESS IS REALLY LONG.

[10. New Business (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]

SO APPROVAL OF ADVERTISING, REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR FOOD SERVICES FOR BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR 24 THROUGH 2024 THROUGH 2025. MICHELLE SCOTT.

THANK YOU, BOARD. SO WE ARE COMING TO THE END OF OUR CURRENT CONTRACT FOR FOOD SERVICES, AND SO THIS IS THE TIME WHEN WE WILL GO OUT AND ADVERTISE AND REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR FOOD SERVICE MANAGEMENT SERVICES.

SO THE SCHEDULE THAT YOU HAVE SEEN IN YOUR ADMINISTRATIVE CONTENT IS A LITTLE OFF. OSPI DID COME BACK AND HAVE A REVISED TEMPLATE FOR US TO USE.

SO WE HAD TO DO SOME QUICK CHANGES AND GET IT BACK TO THEM SO THAT SO WE'RE A LITTLE BEHIND SCHEDULE, BUT WE WILL BE BRINGING THAT TO YOU ONCE WE RECEIVE PROPOSALS AND THE COMMITTEE WILL GO THROUGH AND, AND SCORE THE PROPOSALS AND EVALUATE ANY PROPOSALS THAT WE RECEIVE.

SO ASKING FOR YOUR APPROVAL OF GOING OUT TO ADVERTISE FOR FOOD MANAGEMENT SERVICES.

ANY QUESTIONS FOR MICHELLE? DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY FOOD SERVICE COMPANIES ARE IN THE AREA? THERE'S TWO MAJOR COMPANIES IN THE AREA.

THERE'S CHARTWELLS AND SODEXO ARE THE TWO MAJOR COMPANIES THAT ARE IN THE AREA, AND WE'RE HOPING THAT WE WILL RECEIVE PROPOSALS FROM BOTH OF THOSE COMPANIES SO WE CAN EVALUATE THOSE, AND LOOK, THERE'S OTHER COMPANIES IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON.

WE JUST NOT SURE IF THEY'RE GOING TO APPLY.

YEAH, SURE.

THERE ARE SOME THAT ARE FRESH FOOD ORIENTED AND KIND OF, BUT I DON'T WE'LL NOTIFY AS MANY THAT WE KNOW OF THAT WE ARE RELEASING IT ONCE THE ADVERTISING GOES OUT AND THE RFP IS READY.

YEAH. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? TAKE A MOTION.

I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, APPROVE ADVERTISING THE REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL FOR FOOD SERVICES MANAGEMENT SERVICES RFP 2425-01 FOR THE BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR.

GOOD JOB. YEAH.

ALL RIGHT. WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR THE RFP FOR FOOD SERVICES.

I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENTS FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.

ALL RIGHT. THIS IS ADVERTISING ONLY.

SO ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.

AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 4 TO 0.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

ITEM B UNDER NEW BUSINESS REVISION OF POLICY 1400 MEETING CONDUCT, ORDER OF BUSINESS AND QUORUM.

MR. WATERS.

SO POLICY 1400 MEETING CONDUCT.

ORDER OF BUSINESS AND QUORUM.

BASED OFF OF HOUSE BILL 1210 WHICH HAD TO DO WITH THE RECORDING OF SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES MEETINGS.

[01:40:05]

SORRY. THAT LEGISLATION REQUIRED SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO MAKE AN AUDIO RECORDING OF ALL REGULAR AND SPECIAL BOARD MEETINGS WHERE FINAL ACTION IS TAKEN AND FORMAL PUBLIC TESTIMONY IS ACCEPTED.

SO THIS DRAFT POLICY THAT WE'RE PRESENTING TONIGHT INCLUDES THAT IT IS NOT AN ISSUE FOR US.

AS YOU KNOW, WE'VE BEEN WE WERE ONE OF THE LEADERS IN THIS AREA.

WE'VE BEEN FILMING, RECORDING OUR BOARD MEETINGS FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW.

SO IT'S NOT A CHANGE IN PROCESS FOR IT.

IT JUST CODIFIES IT IN OUR BOARD POLICY.

THERE'S ALSO A SLIGHT REVISION.

ALSO CLARIFIES THAT BEFORE THERE WAS A RESTRICTION ON PUBLIC COMMENTS THAT TALKED ABOUT PROHIBITING HARASSMENT, INTIMIDATION AND BULLYING.

IT'S OFTEN MISCONSTRUED TO MEAN HARASSMENT, INTIMIDATION AND BULLYING OF ANYBODY, INCLUDING EMPLOYEES, INCLUDING BOARD OF DIRECTORS, INCLUDING THE SUPERINTENDENT.

THAT'S BEEN REVISED.

SORRY TO HEAR THIS, BUT REVISED TO UNDERSTAND THAT POLICY PROHIBITING HARASSMENT, INTIMIDATION AND BULLYING IS FOR STUDENTS SO THEY CAN BULLY US.

APPARENTLY. OKAY, IF IT'S A SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHT, THEY THEY CAN THEY JUST CAN'T BE LIBELOUS TO US OR SLANDEROUS.

SO THE POLICY IS PRETTY CLEAR CUT.

WE'LL BE MAKING A MINOR CHANGE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT, BUT AT THE END OF IT, THERE'S A NEW SECTION CALLED MEETING RECORDINGS, AND THAT'S IT.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CHANGES TO THIS POLICY? I WOULD ENTERTAIN A MOTION.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MOVED TO APPROVE THE REVISION OF POLICY 1400 MEETING CONDUCT.

ORDER OF BUSINESS AND QUORUM.

OKAY. WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR.

I WOULD LOOK TO OUR STUDENTS FOR THEIR ADVISORY VOTES.

THANK YOU. SO THE WE WILL BE REVIEWING THE MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR THE REVISION OF POLICY 1400 MEETING CONDUCT, ORDER OF BUSINESS AND QUORUM. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.

AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 4 TO 0 AND THE LAST ITEM OF NEW BUSINESS IS A REVISION TO POLICY 1610.

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST. BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

MR. WATERS AGAIN.

THANK YOU.

WSSDA HAS UPDATED POLICY 1610 TO REFLECT NEW STATUTORY LANGUAGE THAT WAS CAME OUT OF SENATE BILL 6326. THEY AMENDED THE THRESHOLD.

SO THE THRESHOLD THE LEGISLATION INCREASES THE MONTHLY CONTRACT VALUE FROM WHICH MUNICIPAL OFFICERS MAY HAVE A BENEFICIAL INTEREST.

IT USED TO BE 1500 AND IT IS NOW 3000.

THAT REFLECTS JUST THE CHANGING OF TIMES.

THE ALSO THE OTHER THING THAT IT DID, IF YOU LOOK AT THE DRAFT POLICY THAT'S IN BOARD DOCS, YOU'LL SEE THAT IT'S PRETTY MESSY WITH A LOT OF RED STRIKE OUT AND A LOT OF GREEN, AND IT'S NOT REALLY AS MESSY AS IT LOOKS.

THE BIG STRIKE OUT SECTION, WHICH WAS PREVIOUSLY LABELED D, IS NOW REALLY JUST MOVED DOWN TO ANOTHER LOCATION IN THE POLICY, BUT THE INTENT OF IT IS VERY, VERY SIMILAR.

THEY ALSO JUST CLEANED UP SOME LANGUAGE AROUND PERSONS SPOUSES AND, AND CLARIFIED IT BY ATTACHING SPECIFIC TITLES TO IT.

SO WHILE IT LOOKS, WHILE IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S A BIG CHANGE IF YOU WERE TO READ THE POLICIES SEPARATELY IT'S JUST A REARRANGING OF INFORMATION, EXCEPT FOR THAT 1500 TO $3000 INCREASE, AND DIDN'T IT DEFINE STUDENTS OR DISTRICTS WITH 2000 STUDENTS? YES. THERE USED TO BE.

YEAH, THERE USED TO BE A SEPARATE POLICY FOR THAT, AND THEN THEY JUST ADDED THAT IN THERE TO CLARIFY IT.

ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS POLICY REVISION? I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVED THE REVISION OF POLICY 1610 CONFLICTS OF INTEREST, BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

A MOTION ON THE FLOOR.

[01:45:01]

I'D ASK OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES.

PROBABLY THEIR ADVISORY VOTE.

THANK YOU. THE MOTION TO APPROVE THE REVISION OF POLICY 1610 CONFLICTS OF INTEREST.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS. ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS? HEARING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.

AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED.

MOTION PASSES 4 TO 0.

THANK YOU, BOARD.

THAT BRINGS US TO FUTURE EVENTS.

[11. Future Agenda Items and Board Events]

AS I MENTIONED, TOMORROW, THERE IS A BOARD TOUR.

THURSDAY NIGHT IS THE CAC MEETING.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A PRESENTATION BY THE CURRICULUM REGARDING THE NEW ADOPTIONS THAT ARE COMING OUT, OUR CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION AND CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION AND ASSESSMENT DEPARTMENT.
