MY NAME IS JORDAN SNOTS, AND I'M THE PRESIDENT AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

THIS YEAR, BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, ASB REPRESENTATIVES HAVE BEEN AIMING TO GIVE MORE THAN WE ASK.

WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE INVOLVED LEADERSHIP TRAINING, WITH SEVERAL OTHER CLARK COUNTY SCHOOLS.

THIS TRAINING HELPED US TO UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF STUDENT INVOLVEMENT AND HOW WE CAN BETTER ENGAGE EVERYONE AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

ANOTHER EVENT INSPIRED BY THIS INVOLVED LEADERSHIP TRAINING IS OUR WINTER CHEER SPIRIT WEEK.

THAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEK.

WE ARE WATCHING MOVIES AS A STUDENT BODY, RECEIVING AND RESPONDING TO NOTES FROM LOCAL PRIMARY STUDENTS, LEAVING ENCOURAGING NOTES ON CARS, AND CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAY SEASON IN WAYS THAT GIVE BACK TO OUR SCHOOL.

OUR UPCOMING WINTER FORMAL WILL FEATURE A SCHOOL SNACK DRIVE TO HELP BOLSTER SUPPLIES AT THE FOOD PANTRY AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

OUR FOODS CLASSES AND THEIR INSTRUCTOR, JEAN FRITZ, RUN THIS PROGRAM.

WE EXCITED. WE ARE EXCITED TO PARTNER WITH THEM, WE WANT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL TO BE KNOWN AS A PLACE THAT ENCOURAGES KINDNESS AND COLLABORATION AMONG ITS STUDENTS.

IN JANUARY, WE WILL BE HOLDING AN ASSEMBLY CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND WORK OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR, WHO CHAMPIONED THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR.

I AM THE VICE PRESIDENT, AND I BELIEVE THIS IS ACTUALLY, THE FIRST TIME THAT, RIVER HOMELINK VICE PRESIDENT HAS BEEN HERE SINCE 2019.

SO, I'M PRETTY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO SHARE MORE ABOUT OUR SCHOOL FOR YOU GUYS, SO TO START, OUR ASB IS REALLY UNIQUE AS WE'RE SEVENTH THROUGH 12TH GRADE, WHICH I KIND OF CONSIDER IT TO BE SUCH A BLESSING BECAUSE WE'RE ABLE TO REACH OUR VERY LARGE AGE DEMOGRAPHIC, WHICH CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT.

SO OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLERS REALLY HELP US WITH THAT, AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THEM.

SO, WE MEET ONCE A WEEK EVERY WEDNESDAY, AND THERE ARE 30 OF US IN TOTAL, INCLUDING OUR EXECUTIVE MEMBERS, WHICH CONSIST OF

SOMETHING THAT ASB, ESPECIALLY THE EXECUTIVE SENATE IS VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS YEAR IS UNDERSTANDING OUR COLLECTIVE WHY, OUR REASON FOR BEING HERE AND DOING WHAT WE DO.

THIS IS SOMETHING EXACT LEARNED ABOUT DURING LEADERSHIP CAMP LAST SUMMER, AND IT BECAME SOMETHING WE ALL WANTED TO REALLY IMPLEMENT WITHIN OUR OWN ASB.

THIS YEAR'S WHY IS TO BUILD CONNECTION AND COMMUNITY NOT JUST WITHIN ASB, BUT THROUGHOUT OUR WHOLE SCHOOL.

A LOT OF US HAVE LEARNED THAT WITHOUT CONNECTION, COMMUNITY AND GENUINE RELATIONSHIP, EVERYTHING FALLS APART.

THIS IS WHY CONNECTION IS OUR BIGGEST GOAL THAT WE ARE STRIVING FOR.

IN OUR MEETINGS, WE HAVE TWO MAIN EVENTS THAT TAKE UP MOST OF OUR TIME, STARTING WITH THE COMMITTEES.

THIS IS THE TIME WHEN EVERYONE BREAKS OFF INTO GROUPS TO WORK ON EXECUTING DIFFERENT EVENTS.

WE HAVE PLANNED. OUR ASB HAS OVER 13 EVENTS EVENTS PLANNED FOR THIS YEAR, SOME OF WHICH HAVE ALREADY BEEN EXECUTED.

ONE OF OUR MAIN EVENTS, WINTER-GRAMS, IS CURRENTLY HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.

WINTER-GRAMS IS A TWO WEEK LONG EVENT WHERE WE WILL SELL VARIOUS TOYS AND GIFTS FOR PEOPLE TO BUY FOR THEIR FRIENDS OR LOVED ONES, AND WE DELIVER THEM TO THAT PERSON'S CLASS.

AND WE EVEN SPELL, LIKE SING A SPECIAL SONG FOR THEM.

IT'S PRETTY FUN. WE ARE ALSO CURRENTLY PLANNING OUR WINTER FORMAL.

IT IS SEVEN THROUGH 12 AND IS ONE OF OUR FOUR DANCES THAT WE HAVE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

NEXT WE HAVE PROJECT GROUPS, WHICH IS THE TIME WHERE WE DEDICATE TO NOT JUST ADVERTISE FOR OUR EVENTS, BUT ALSO TO BRING COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION TO OUR SCHOOL.

WE HAVE AN OUTREACH PROJECT GROUP WHOSE MAIN JOB IS TO COME UP WITH FUN AND CREATIVE WAYS TO BRING MORE COMMUNITY INTO OUR JAIL, SUCH AS THE FOOD DRIVE WE DID IN NOVEMBER AND A VETERANS DAY SLIDESHOW THAT WAS DISPLAYED IN THE COMMONS DEDICATED TO RELATIVES OF STUDENTS, STAFFS AND PARENTS THAT SERVED FOR OUR COUNTRY.

ANOTHER PROJECT GROUP THAT HELPS US FULFILL OUR WHY, IS MEDIA, WHICH IS IN CHARGE OF OUR TAKE WHAT YOU NEED WALL, WHICH IS A WALL IN THE HALLWAY FILLED WITH INSPIRING STICKY NOTES TO HELP ENCOURAGE SOMEONE TO GET THROUGH THE DAY.

MEDIA HAS ALSO IMPLEMENTED A COLORING BOOK COMPETITION, WHICH IS PRETTY NEW BUT VERY FUN.

WE'RE COLORING BOOK PAGES ARE PASSED OUT TO STUDENTS AND DISPLAYED ON THE WALL EVERY MONTH, AND THE WINNER GETS A PRIZE.

OUR ANNOUNCEMENTS GROUP HAS ALSO BROUGHT A LOT OF LIFE TO OUR SCHOOL.

BY ANNOUNCING THE CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH.

EVERY MONTH, THE SCHOOL GIVES US A NEW CHARACTER TRAIT TO ANNOUNCE TO THE SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS TO WORK ON, AND WE HAVE ALSO BEEN COLLABORATING WITH OUR CULTURE CLUB, WHICH HAS BEEN ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO PRACTICE THESE CHARACTER TRAITS.

FINALLY, OUR ASB IS NOT JUST A CLUB, BUT ALSO A LEADERSHIP CLASS THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY GET CREDIT FOR, WE ARE CURRENTLY STUDYING THE BOOK THE MAKING OF A MANAGER BY JULIE ZUO, AND THE MOST RECENT CHAPTER DISCUSSED ACCEPTING FEEDBACK FROM OTHERS, PROGRESSING AS A LEADER, HOW TO MOVE FORWARD FROM THINGS LIKE IMPOSTER SYNDROME AND SO ON.

SO, THAT'S KIND OF MY FIRST LITTLE INTRODUCTION FOR YOU TO OUR ASB.

ONE POSITION IS NOW OPEN VACATED BY FORMER DIRECTOR MARK WATRIN, AND WE WILL BE LOOKING TO FILL THAT POSITION, AS WELL AS POSSIBLY A SECOND POSITION IF WITH MARY HAVING OUR HANDS FULL WITH THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE AND ALSO, NOW VICE PRESIDENT. FORMER DIRECTOR ANDREW LAWHON WAS OUR MEMBER BOARD REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE FOUNDATION, WE WILL NEED A NEW BOARD MEMBER TO BE APPOINTED AS A BOARD REPRESENTATIVE, WE'LL DO THAT IN JUST A FEW MINUTES, AND THEN I CAN SHARE THEY HAVE AN UPCOMING MEETING, I BELIEVE, ON THE 19TH OF THIS MONTH.

IT WAS VERY CLEAR THAT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL IS REALLY COMMITTED TO THEIR PLC WORK, AND I THINK THAT THEY REALLY FOSTERED THE IDEA THAT IT STARTS WITH THE TEACHERS AND THAT IF YOU DON'T HAVE A STRONG FOUNDATION THERE, THEN YOUR STUDENTS AREN'T GOING TO BE LEARNING.

AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS VERY INTERESTING.

I ALSO THOUGHT THAT WAS VERY ADMIRABLE.

SO I THINK THAT WAS ONE OF MY MAIN HIGHLIGHTS FROM VISITING.

AND I THINK THE TWO CLASSES, THE TWO AP CLASSES, WE WENT INTO THE COLLABORATION AND THERE AND THE, YOU KNOW, JUST THE RIGOR OF THE LEARNING WAS, EXCEPTIONAL.

AND, YEAH, IT WAS I MEAN, I JUST GOT A FEELING FROM THE FOUR CLASSES WE WENT INTO, SAME AS YOU, JULIA, THAT, OBVIOUSLY THE TEACHERS ARE WORKING TOGETHER AND EVERYTHING WE HEARD EARLIER THIS EVENING, WE SAW IT IN PLAY, SO.

I REALLY APPRECIATED THAT AND REALLY THE DISCUSSION THAT THEY'RE WORKING ON THIS YEAR AROUND CELL PHONES AND HOW TO IDENTIFY HOW MUCH STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO USE CELL PHONES DURING THE CLASS AND WHAT TYPE.

SO TEACHING STUDENTS DIRECTLY THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS TO USE YOUR CELL PHONE AT THIS TIME.

IS IT A GREEN LIGHT, A YELLOW LIGHT, A RED LIGHT? I REALLY APPRECIATED THAT BECAUSE I THINK, SOMETIMES THINGS BECOME AN ALL OR NOTHING, AND I JUST APPRECIATE THE APPROACH, BECAUSE I DO THINK THERE'S A TIME AND A PLACE FOR CERTAIN THINGS, BUT WE HAVE TO TEACH THE EXPECTATIONS.

AND IT'S TALKING ABOUT STANDARDS FOR EXPLICIT SEXUAL CONTENT IN SCHOOLS, AND THAT WE AS A SCHOOL HAVE, AN OBLIGATION SCHOOLS WITH WRITTEN, APPROPRIATE STANDARDS FOR SEXUALLY EXPLICIT MATERIALS, MATERIALS THAT DIFFER FROM ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL ACCORDING TO THEIR AGE GROUP, FILL THE FINITE SPACE THAT WE HAVE IN THE CURRICULUM, THAT WE HAVE WITH THESE KIDS.

WE ONLY HAVE SIX HOURS A DAY, WE WANT AS SCHOOLS, DON'T WE WANT TO SPEND THAT FINITE TIME IN THE DAY ON ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND SEXUALLY EXPLICIT CONTACT CONTENT DISTRACTS FROM THAT.

AND SO I WOULD LIKE YOU, THERE'S A LOT OF SCHOOLS THAT DON'T HAVE BASELINE STANDARDS, AND I WOULD LIKE OUR DISTRICT TO HAVE THEM.

WHILE I WAS IN SCHOOL, I DIDN'T FEEL I BELONGED.

GIRLS AND WOMEN AT THE TIME WERE TREATED AS LESS THAN OUR COUNTERPARTS.

I TRIED TO INCREASE MY BELONGING BY EXCELLING IN ACADEMIC SUBJECTS THAT WERE CONSIDERED MEN'S FIELDS.

BUT IT MADE ME FEEL LIKE AN IMPOSTER EVEN WHEN I EXCELLED, AND THE LINGERING SENSE THAT I STILL DIDN'T BELONG CAUSED MUCH ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION.

WHO ELSE DIDN'T FEEL THEY BELONGED OR KIDS WHO HAD MIXED BLOOD, WHO SPOKE WITH ACCENTS, WHO HAD LEARNING DIFFICULTIES OR PHYSICAL CHALLENGES? LGBTQ KIDS? I NEVER EVEN KNEW THEY EXISTED AROUND ME.

I OFTEN HEAR PEOPLE SAY THAT SCHOOL SHOULD ONLY CONCENTRATE ON TEACHING THE ACADEMICS.

I WOULD SAY YES AFTER THE KIDS KNOW THAT THEY BELONG JUST AS THEY ARE, AND AFTER THEY KNOW THAT EVERYONE ELSE ALSO BELONGS. AND THEIR CURIOSITY AND ENERGY ARE READY TO BE ENGAGED CONSTRUCTIVELY.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING IS TO ACADEMICS WHAT BREATHING IS TO RUNNING.

I'M GRATEFUL THAT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING IS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF EDUCATION IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.

SO IF THEY'RE IN THE BUDGET, YOU GUYS CAN THINK ABOUT PUTTING SOME MONEY AWAY FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, FOR TEACHERS TO DO THESE EXTRA COURSES, MUSEUM STUDIES DURING THE SUMMER TIME TO INCREASE OUR CRAFT, AND YEAH, THAT'S THE COURSES.

THERE'S A LOT MORE I COULD SAY, BUT, TRAVIS SAID TO KEEP IT SHORT BUT I'LL TAKE QUESTIONS IF YOU HAVE THEM.

GIVEN THAT YOU'RE BASICALLY TAKING YOUR CURRENT WORKLOAD AND YOU'RE JUST SPLITTING IT UP TO HELP KIND OF IDENTIFY WHO'S WHO, AND THAT IT IS RIVER HOMELINK, I'M ASSUMING THAT THIS IS STILL GOING TO BE A MANAGEABLE FORMAT FOR YOU, BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT ADDING KIDS PER SE, YOU'RE JUST KIND OF PUTTING THEM IN BLOCKS.

YEP. THE KIDS ARE ALREADY THERE, AND IT HELPS WITH SCHEDULING TO ALLOW THEM TO TAKE WHAT THEY WANT, WHEN THEY WANT.

AND THEN THEY WOULD MOVE INTO GRAPHIC DESIGN PORTFOLIO, WHICH THEY COULD CONTINUE TAKING FOR AS MANY CREDITS AS OR YEARS AS THEY WANT TO. WELL, I AGREE IT MAKES MORE SENSE TO HAVE A SPECIFIC NAME FOR THE COURSE WHEN YOU PUT IT ON A TRANSCRIPT RATHER THAN SPECIAL PROJECTS.

ACTUALLY, THIS IS A REALLY INTERESTING ONE.

IT'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT FROM THE KIND OF THINGS THAT WE NORMALLY GET TO DO, AND IT'S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY.

THE REQUEST IN FRONT OF YOU IS TO APPROVE OUR RFP TO GO OUT TO BID FOR INSTALLATION OF A PUBLIC SAFETY DISTRIBUTED ANTENNA SYSTEM, OR DAS SYSTEM, THE PROCESS STARTED, I THINK, OVER A YEAR AGO.

AND, CHIEF FORT BATTLE GROUND CITY POLICE APPROACHED DENNY WATERS AND SAID WE MIGHT HAVE SOME FUNDING AND WE'D LIKE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THINGS WE COULD DO TO HELP IMPROVE SECURITY IN THE SCHOOLS.

SO CHRISTMAS BREAK LAST YEAR, I MET WITH CHIEF FORT.

THIS IS A VERY LONG PROCESS, AND WE TALKED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES OF CAMERAS OR THIS RADIO SYSTEM.

THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS FROM THE CITY THAT AT TIMES THERE ARE POLICE OFFICERS IN BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL HAD ISSUES, SO WHAT WE DID FROM THERE IS CONDUCTED A STUDY OF ALL OF OUR CAMPUSES, EVEN THOSE THAT ARE, OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS, SO THAT WE KNEW EXACTLY WHERE OUR PROBLEM SPOTS ARE.

AND I COULD SAY GOING INTO IT, THERE ARE SOME ASSUMPTIONS THAT COULD BE MADE THAT OUR NEWER SCHOOLS ACTUALLY MAY HAVE SIGNAL ISSUES.

BECAUSE IF YOU'VE EVER BEEN INTO DAYBREAK OR TUKES AND TRIED TO MAKE A PHONE CALL ON YOUR CELL PHONE, IT'S CHALLENGING THERE REALLY WELL BUILT.

MOST NEW BUILDINGS ARE.

SO WHAT WE SAW WAS FOR THE SCHOOLS IN THE BATTLE GROUND CITY LIMITS, CHIEF, BOTH DAYBREAKS AND BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL ALL HAD ENOUGH FAILED AREAS THAT THEY THAT THEY WOULD QUALIFY FOR THIS KIND OF ANTENNA SYSTEM.

SO WE THEN SUBMITTED OUR INFORMATION TO THE CITY AND WAITED AND WAITED AND WAITED UNTIL THEY GOT THEIR FEDERAL FUNDING APPROVED, WHICH IS NOW WHAT IS ALLOWING US TO PROCEED WITH THIS.

THE AMOUNT THAT THEY HAVE AVAILABLE TO US IS UP TO $300,000 AND WE'RE NOT ENTIRELY SURE THAT WE CAN ACCOMPLISH ALL FOUR SCHOOLS WITH IT, BUT WE'RE GOING TO DO AS MUCH AS WE CAN WITH THAT 300,000.

ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS THAT DO YOU HAVE AN ANTICIPATED, LIKE DO YOU HAVE AN EXPECTATION THAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE IN THE RESULTS FROM THE RFP? YES, I DO, YEAH, AT LEAST ONE COMPANY, WHILE THEY'RE NOT JUST LOCAL, BUT WE WORK WITH THEM QUITE A BIT.

[INAUDIBLE] WIRELESS, DOES INSTALL THESE KIND OF SYSTEMS. THERE'S A FEW OTHER COMPANIES THAT WE'VE WORKED WITH THAT HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO DO THIS, SO I THINK THAT WE'LL GET A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER.

[INAUDIBLE] SYSTEMS ARE FAIRLY COMMON.

I DO BELIEVE THERE THEY MAY BE REQUIRED FOR ALL NEW CONSTRUCTION ABOVE A CERTAIN SQUARE FOOTAGE, I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THAT SQUARE FOOTAGE IS IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON, BUT IT'S AT LEAST OVER 50,000FT².

SO, YEAH, THIS IS IT'S NOT A RARE THING.

IN OTHER WORDS, I THINK DAS SYSTEMS FIRST STARTED, BECOMING A REQUIREMENT FROM THE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION AFTER 9/11, BECAUSE THAT WAS ONE OF THE ISSUES THAT THEY FACED, IS THAT COMMUNICATION IN THOSE BUILDINGS WAS HAMPERED BY THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BUILDING ITSELF.

THIS WAS A GRANT THAT THE CITY APPLIED FOR.

IT WAS I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT IT WAS CHAMPIONED BY, REPRESENTATIVE HERRERA BUTLER, WHO GOT IT INTO THE FEDERAL.
