NEXT STEP ON OUR AGENDA,

[5. Recognition]

WE HAVE A RECOGNITION, WHICH I WILL TURN OVER TO MR. WATERS.

>> THANK YOU, MS. MADDUX. I APPRECIATE IT.

FIRST OFF, IT'S ALWAYS WONDERFUL TO HAVE THIS UPFRONT, OUR RECOGNITION ON SOME OUTSTANDING THINGS GOING ON IN OUR DISTRICT.

I'D FIRST LIKE TO INVITE, BUT DON'T GET UP YET.

I'D FIRST LIKE TO INVITE COLLEEN O'NEAL, WHO'S GOING TO BE COMING UP HERE AS PART OF THE BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION.

[00:05:04]

BUT I ALSO WANT TO SAY, FOR ANYBODY OUT THERE WHO MAY NOT KNOW THIS, THAT NOT ONLY DOES COLLEEN HAVE A LONG HISTORY HERE WITH US IN THIS DISTRICT, HAVING SERVED AS A MEMBER OF ADMINISTRATION FOR A LONG TIME, THE PRINCIPAL OF CAM ACADEMY.

BUT THIS YEAR AND VERY DULY RECOGNIZED, THE GREATER VANCOUVER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAS ANNOUNCED THEIR 2023 IRIS AWARD FINALIST.

FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE IRIS AWARD, THE IRIS AWARD IS AN AWARD THAT IS PRESENTED IN OBSERVANCE OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY.

IT ANNUALLY RECOGNIZES THE OUTSTANDING WOMEN FOR THEIR EFFORTS AND IMPACT IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON REGION, AND OUR VERY OWN COLLEEN O'NEAL IS A FINALIST, SO CONGRATULATIONS TO COLLEEN.

[APPLAUSE] ARE WE GOING TO PUT PODIUM BACK? I DON'T KNOW IF COLLEEN WANTS TO SPEAK ABOUT THE PODIUM.

[LAUGHTER] BUT WITH THAT, I'LL STALL.

A LITTLE WHILE WE GET THE PODIUM BACK.

COLLEEN IS HERE TODAY ALONG WITH OTHERS.

I SEE LINDA GILLINGS, IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE LINDA, AND SHERRY DALEY ARE HERE.

THE BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION, BGEF, HAS BEEN SUPPORTING STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS IN BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS SINCE 1994 AND IS COMMITTED TO SERVING THE COMMUNITY.

AND TODAY, COLLEEN IS GOING TO PRESENT THE FOLLOWING GRANTS FOR US.

NUMBER ONE, A GRANT FOR ALL OF OUR DRAMA DEPARTMENTS.

SO BATTLE GROUND HIGH-SCHOOL IS RECEIVING A GRANT FOR $3,500.

PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL IS RECEIVING A GRANT FOR $5,000.

ROOVER HOME LINK IS RECEIVING A GRANT FOR $1,500.

IN ADDITION TO THAT, $4,000 FOR THE PURCHASE OF 12 EMERGENCY DRUG OVERDOSE WALL BOXES WITH ALARMS FOR PUBLIC ACCESS TO NARCAN.

ANYBODY FAMILIAR WITH THE CURRENT EPIDEMIC WITH FENTANYL USE OPIOIDS IS UNDERSTANDING THAT NARCAN IS WHAT'S USED TO TREAT IT IF SOMEBODY GOES AND HAS AN OVERDOSE.

SO THOSE ARE GOING TO BE AVAILABLE IN ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS.

IT IS BGF'S GOAL TO CONTINUE WORKING WITH THE DISTRICT UNTIL ALL OF ITS SCHOOLS AND THE GYM AT THE LEWISVILLE CAMPUS ARE EQUIPPED WITH NARCAN.

THEY'VE ALREADY PURCHASED 11 OF THEM.

THEY'RE INSTALLED IN ALL OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND HIGH SCHOOLS.

BUT I JUST LEARNED TODAY THAT ONCE THEY FOUND OUT THAT WE WERE ALSO INSTALLING THEM AT OUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS, THEY ALSO JUMPED INTO ACTION AND ARE PURCHASING THOSE AS WELL.

THEN LAST BUT NOT LEAST, $1,193 TO REPLENISH THE SUPPLIES IN OUR SCHOOL MOBILIZATION ASSISTANCE RESPONSES TEAMS. THOSE ARE OUR SMART TEAMS. WHENEVER WE HAVE A CRISIS IN ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS, FOR INSTANCE, IF A STUDENT WERE TO BE INJURED OR PASS AWAY IN A CAR ACCIDENT, WE HAVE A RESPONSE TEAM THAT GOES TO SUPPORT STAFF AND STUDENTS AT EACH OF THOSE SCHOOLS.

THAT'S CALLED OUR SMART TEAM, AND WITH THE BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION'S GENEROUS GIFT, THOSE TEAMS WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE SUPPLIES THAT THEY NEED.

BGEF CONTINUES TO AMAZE ALL OF US WITH THE WORK THAT THEY'VE DONE.

THEY DO SO MUCH FOR OUR STUDENTS AND OUR SCHOOLS.

WE ARE ALWAYS THANKFUL AND ALWAYS APPRECIATE IT.

WITH THAT, I'D LIKE TO INVITE COLLEEN AND WHOEVER ELSE, LINDA, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU WANT TO COME UP TOO.

IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE YOU GUYS, AND SHERRY, TO COME UP AND MAKE THIS DONATION OFFICIAL.

THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. [APPLAUSE] WELL, IN OUR LAST SCHOOL BOARD MEETING THERE WAS AN UNDERSTATEMENT BECAUSE WE ALWAYS LOVE BEING ABLE TO CONTINUE OUR SUPPORT OF OUR STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOLS.

AND OUR TOTAL WITH ALL THOSE GRANTS CAME TO $15,193.

MY TEACHER VOICE, YOU DON'T HEAR MY TEACHER VOICE WAY THAT PRINCIPAL'S VOICE UP.

[LAUGHTER] AND SO WE ARE EXCITED TO BE ABLE AND QUITE HONESTLY, THESE FUNDS ARE ALREADY BRINGING THE MATERIAL AND SUPPLIES INTO THE DISTRICT THAT WERE NEEDED.

AND SO ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES,

[00:10:04]

I FORMALLY PRESENT THIS DONATION TO THE BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

>> ONE OF MY BIGGEST LIFE GOALS HAS BEEN, I'VE ALWAYS WANTED THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACCEPT THE BIG CHECK.

[LAUGHTER] SO I'M GOING FOR IT.

[APPLAUSE]

>> HE DOES HAVE TO GIVE IT BACK THOUGH.

[LAUGHTER] IN ADDITION, I'D LIKE TO SHARE A COUPLE OF MORE THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN GOING ON.

MANY OF YOU MAY NOT KNOW, BUT A YEAR AGO WE GOT $125,000 GRANT FROM THE CALARTS TRIBE WHICH WAS TOTALLY OUT OF THE BLUE AND NO STRINGS ATTACHED, WHICH WERE ALWAYS NICE.

JUST WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU THAT PART OF THAT MONEY HELPED KEEP 17 OF OUR BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOL FAMILIES AND THEIR KIDS IN SHELTERS IN THE LAST YEAR.

AND SO WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THAT, THAT'S PRETTY AMAZING.

IT ALSO PROVIDED US THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACTUALLY HIRE A PART-TIME EMPLOYEE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND SHE'S BEEN AMAZING.

THE OTHER THING I'D LIKE TO SHARE THAT JUST RECENTLY HAPPENED IS TODAY I RAN AROUND TO SEVERAL SCHOOLS DROPPING OFF BOOKS AND HATS FOR THE DR. SEUSS CELEBRATION.

AND WE HAD A GLITCH THIS YEAR.

I FOUND OUT ON FEBRUARY 9TH THAT THE GROUP THAT USUALLY PURCHASES THE HATS THOUGHT THEY HAD HATS AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE HATS.

SO AMAZON AND ORIENTAL TRADING BECAME MY BEST FRIEND.

AND I'VE BEEN RECEIVING HATS AT MY HOUSE OFF AND ON NOW FOR ABOUT THREE WEEKS AND BAGGING THEM UP.

WE'RE THIS CLOSE TO GETTING THE LAST OF THEM IN.

BUT WE COULDN'T IMAGINE DR. SEUSS WITHOUT CELEBRATING WITH THE HATS.

SO THAT IS ONLY BECAUSE THIS COMMUNITY HAS SUPPORTED US SO STRONGLY IN OUR AUCTION DINNER LAST OCTOBER, BROUGHT IN OUR LARGEST AMOUNT OF NET GAIN.

AND SO WE WERE ABLE TO JUST JUMP ON BOARD AND GET THOSE HATS PURCHASE.

SO THANK YOU, EVERYBODY.

>> WE ARE FOREVER GRATEFUL, MY FRIENDS.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. [LAUGHTER]

>> WE ARE ALSO APPRECIATIVE THAT WELL, THE MONEY IS WONDERFUL.

THE SUPPORT FOR EVENTS LIKE THE DR. SEUSS EVENT IS HUGE BECAUSE STAFF ALONE COULD NOT PULL IT OFF WITHOUT YOU.

SO THANK YOU FOR DOING THAT AS WELL.

SO THANK YOU.

>> GRUDGINGLY, I GAVE YOU BACK HERE.[LAUGHTER]

>> YOU GOT THE MONEY.

THAT'S WHAT COUNTS. [LAUGHTER]

>> THANK YOU AGAIN. [APPLAUSE]

>> ALL RIGHT. WELL, THANK YOU, LADIES.

ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE YOU.

NEXT ON THE AGENDA.

WE HAVE DIRECTOR RECOGNITION.

>> AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, ONE OF OUR DIRECTORS HAS DECIDED TO STEP DOWN AND WE ARE VERY SAD TO SEE HIM GO.

I'M GOING TO BE TALKING JUST FOR A COUPLE OF MOMENTS ABOUT MR. ROB HENRIKSON, DIRECTOR OF DISTRICT NUMBER 2, BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

ROB HAS SERVED US HONORABLY SINCE 2019, SO 2019 TO 2023, FOUR YEARS.

AND THIS PLAQUE THAT WE'RE GOING TO GIVE HIM SAYS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND DEDICATION TO THE STUDENTS AND STAFF OF BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

AND I WANT YOU TO KNOW IT DOESN'T COME CLOSE TO RECOGNIZING THE FULL ACHIEVEMENT OF THIS MAN.

HE'S GOT JUST A HEART OF GOLD.

THAT'S WHAT I'VE LEARNED. HE CARES SO DEEPLY FOR THIS DISTRICT AND FOR THE KIDS OF THIS DISTRICT.

AND THAT COMES OUT IN WHENEVER HE SPEAKS AND IN ALL OF HIS VOTES AND EVERYTHING.

ROB, I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW.

I'M HAPPY THAT FOR YOU THAT YOU'RE MOVING ON AND YOU'RE GOING TO GO OFF TO BETTER THINGS.

AND I'M SO GRATEFUL FOR THE SERVICE THAT YOU'VE PROVIDED.

I DO WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE MISSED MY FRIEND, SIGNIFICANTLY.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THE IMPACT THAT YOU'VE HAD ON THIS DISTRICT IS LONG-LASTING.

AND WE ARE SO GRATEFUL AND SO VERY THANKFUL.

SO ON BEHALF OF ALL OF US HERE THE SCHOOL BOARD, AND ON BEHALF OF BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

I JUST LIKE TO PRESENT TO YOU THIS PLAQUE AND SAY THANK YOU.

WHY DON'T YOU COME UP HERE.[APPLAUSE]

[00:15:12]

>> WELL, IT'S BEEN AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE SERVING THESE LAST FOUR YEARS.

IT HAS HAD ITS UPS AND DOWNS, SOME STRESSFUL MOMENTS.

BUT AS I LOOK BACK, IT'S ALL BEEN GOOD.

AND IT'S JUST A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR ME TO LET SOMEBODY ELSE TAKE THE REIGNS FOR AWHILE IN DISTRICT 2 AND REPRESENT US.

AND I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT, ESPECIALLY THE KIDS.

AND I HAVE A SOFT SPOT IN MY HEART FOR THEM, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO HAVE MARGINS IN THEIR LIVES AND DIFFICULTIES IN THEIR LIVES.

AND I'LL ALWAYS BE A CHAMPION FOR THEM.

SO I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE MY WIFE WHO PUT UP WITH A LOT OF [LAUGHTER] TIME AWAY FROM HER AND THIS LAST FOUR YEARS AT DIFFERENT MEETINGS AND TRAVELING, AND I APPRECIATE HER AND HER SUPPORT.

AND ANYWAY, THANK YOU SO MUCH, DANNY. THANK YOU.

>> I WANT TO GET A PICTURE HERE.

[APPLAUSE]

>> WELL, STATUS THAT IS.

[LAUGHTER] AS EXCITING AS IT IS TO MOVE ON TO NEW CHAPTER.

WE WILL MOVE ON TO MORE EXCITING THINGS AND CELEBRATE SOME STUDENT VOICE.

[6. Communications]

I BELIEVE WE HAVE STUDENTS HERE THAT WE GET TO HEAR FROM, POSSIBLY FROM CHIEF UNPLUG.

THIS IS EXCITING.

HI. WILL YOU SHARE WITH US YOUR NAME?

>> HI, I'M KARA.

>> KARA? WELL, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH US TODAY?

>> SOME CLUBS THAT ARE HAPPENING AT CHIEF FOR ASP, U-BOOK, LEGO ROBOTICS.

WRITING CLUB HAS STARTED AND FRISBEE GOLF STARTED A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO.

FRISBEE GOLF AND THEN ROCKET CLUB HAPPENED IN THE FALL AND IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN IN THE SPRING.

CHESS HAS STARTED UP AGAIN. IT'S D&D.

DREAM TEAM IS A YEAR LONG THING.

IT IS GOING ON AND AN EVENT IS HAPPENING NEXT MONDAY.

FUTURE CITY JUST ENDED WITH THE TEAM PLACING THIRD PLACE IN STATE, I THINK.

THEN SOME ACTIVITIES OR THE SOCIALS FOR EACH GRADE.

THE SPARROW CLUB ASSEMBLY HAPPENED RECENTLY, AND SOME UPCOMING EVENTS ARE THE COFFEE HOUSE KEPT CABARET, WHICH IS A TALENT SHOW FOR THE BAND AND THE CHOIR.

THE MUSIC MARCHING BAND IS STARTING UP.

WE JUST RECENTLY GOT OUR MARCHING BAND MUSIC AND FOR JAZZ, THE JAZZ BAND HAS GONE TO THREE DIFFERENT FESTIVALS AND PLACED, SECOND PLACE TWICE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF SPORTS.

A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE INVOLVED IN SPORTS AND NHD IS HAPPENING THIS SATURDAY.

>> THAT'S A LOT OF STUFF GOING ON.

>> YEAH. [LAUGHTER] I'M REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THE VARIETY THERE, LIKE FRISBEE GOLF AND CHAIRS.

>> FRISBEE GOLF WAS LEADING BY ONE OF THE POLICE OFFICERS.

>> NEAT.

>> WHAT IS FUTURE CITY?

>> FUTURE CITY IS A CLUB WHERE YOU MAKE A CITY THAT SOLVE THE PROBLEM OR IF IT'S STEAM AND YOU PRESENT THE CITY TO A GROUP OF JUDGES, I THINK.

>> THAT'S REALLY COOL.

>> IT'S SPONSORED BY AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ENGINEERS, I BELIEVE.

>> I THINK SO.

>> IT'S A NATIONWIDE PROGRAM?

>> YEAH.

>> DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN ANY OF THOSE?

[00:20:02]

>> I PARTICIPATE IN THE LEGO ROBOTICS, THE DREAM TEAM.

I'M IN MARCHING BAND, AND THE JAZZ-BAND.

I JUST WAS THE SOCCER WAS JUST RECENTLY ENDED LAST WEEK AND THEN IN NHD THIS SATURDAY.

>> WOW, YOU'RE QUITE BUSY YOURSELF.

[LAUGHTER]

>> SOUNDS LIKE A FUTURE STUDENTS SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER.

>> YEAH, THERE YOU GO.

>> OR TEACHER.

>> THANK YOU, KARA. [OVERLAPPING]

>> THANK YOU, KARA.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE.

WE APPRECIATE IT. [APPLAUSE]

>> DO WE ALSO HAVE STUDENTS FROM CAPTAIN STRONG, MAYBE JOINING US ALREADY?

>> [BACKGROUND].

>> [INAUDIBLE], OKAY.

>> HELLO.

>> HELLO. MY NAME IS DEREK.

I'M EIGHT GRADER CHIEF ON SUCH MIDDLE SCHOOLS.

I'M TALKING ABOUT OUR DISC GOLF PROGRAM.

IT'S HELPING US STUDENTS STAY ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL AND HAVE SOMETHING FUN FOR US TO DO.

I'M A SCOUT IN THE BSA AND ONE OF OUR REQUIREMENTS WAS TO TRY A NEW SPORT AND WHEN WE READ UP ON DISC GOLF I KNEW IT WAS SOMETHING I WANTED TO TRY.

WHEN I HEARD CHIEF WAS PUTTING ON PROGRAMS WHERE I KNEW I WANTED TO JOIN.

THE PROGRAM HAS A FEW DIFFERENT BENEFITS.

NOT ONLY IS IT TEACHING US THAT IF WE SHOW UP AND CONSISTENTLY IN PRACTICE, OVER TIME, WE CAN GET BETTER.

BUT IT'S ALSO BENEFICIAL IN BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STUDENTS AND POLICE OFFICERS.

THE MORE OF THE STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM GET TO TALK WITH OFFICER ASHKENLAW, THE MORE IT BUILDS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUDENTS AND POLICE OFFICERS AND CREATES BONDS.

IT ALSO HELPS BRIDGE THAT GAP BETWEEN POLICE AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY BY TEACHING STUDENTS THAT POLICE ARE APPROACHABLE, IT MAKES IT EASY FOR STUDENTS TO APPROACH POLICE OFFICERS AND HELPS US KNOW WHAT TO DO IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS.

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT DISC GOLF IS, IS PLAYED SIMILAR TO GOLF, BUT INSTEAD OF A CLUB AND BALL THROW A FRISBEE LIKE DISK INTO BASKETS ALONG OF COURSE.

THE GOAL IS TO MAKE IT IN THE BASKET AND FEELS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE LIKE GOLF.

IT CAN BE PLAYED IN YOUR OWN WAY, IT COULD BE PLAYED COMPETITIVELY OR CASUALLY.

IT DOESN'T REQUIRE ANY SKILL AND ANYBODY CAN LEARN PLAY.

YOU MAY NOT BE GREAT NOW, HOWEVER, WITH TIME YOU'LL LEARN NEW SKILLS AND SO YOU CAN MAKE THAT DISK IN THE BASKET VERY FEW THROWS.

THIS GOLF HAS BECOME WAY MORE POPULAR ACROSS THE US.

MORE THAN 9,000 COURSES, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, FRIENDS, AND FAMILIES OF ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE TAKING THESE COURSES AND HAVING TONS OF FUN.

DO YOU KNOW WE HAVE A COURSE HERE IN OUR HOMETOWN? YOU COULD FIND THIS COURSE AT [INAUDIBLE].

SO GRAB A DISK AND FLY RIGHT AND OVER TO EXPERIENCE THE FUN THE CHIEF ON SUCH STUDENTS ARE HAVING.

WE INVITE YOU TO COME SEE US PLAY OUT OR CHURN AT CORNERS PARK ON JUNE 3RD.

>> NICE. ARE YOU GUYS ALWAYS AT CORNERS PARK.

>> NO. WE PRACTICE AT CHIEF FOR AN HOUR AFTER SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAYS AND THEN IN JUNE.

[OVERLAPPING]

>> ON WEDNESDAYS YOU PRACTICE?

>> YES.

>> WOULD IT BE OKAY IF I CAME BY ONE DAY AND PRACTICE WITH YOU GUYS?

>> YEAH.

>> I'M A BIG DISC GOLF GUY.

[LAUGHTER] I'M JUST REALLY GOOD AT IT.

>> HE'S ALSO COMPETITIVE.

>> NOT AT ALL.

>> THAT'D BE FUN. I THINK IT'S A GREAT IDEA THAT YOU GUYS HAD TO START THAT.

YOU ESPECIALLY. THANK YOU FOR THAT.

>> YOU'RE WELCOME.

>> THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THOSE ACTIVITIES TO OUR STUDENTS.

>> IT SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF OUR POLICE OFFICERS VOLUNTEERS TIME FOR THIS.

>> YEAH.

>> WOW, THAT'S WONDERFUL.

>> OTHER POLICE OFFICERS COME PLAY WITH US TOO.

>> WONDERFUL.

>> THE OFFICER THAT YOU SPOKE OF, HE'S PART OF THE BATTLE GROUND POLICE DEPARTMENT.

>> YES.

>> THAT'S FANTASTIC.

>> OFFICER KEENLAW?

>> KENLAW.

>> KENLAW. HE'S ONE OF OUR [OVERLAPPING].

>> I REMEMBER HIM.

>> THAT'S GREAT.

>> DEREK, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR BEING HERE.

>> YOU'RE WELCOME.

>> OUTSTANDING.

>> THANK YOU.

>> GREAT JOB.

>> THANK YOU. [OVERLAPPING]

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]

>> NOW, STUDENTS FROM CAPTAIN STRONG, CHARLIE CRAWFORD, AND TURNER MCCARTY.

>> PARENTS, YOU GUYS CAN COME ALL THE WAY OUT IF YOU WANT TO [OVERLAPPING].

[BACKGROUND] WE DON'T MIND. GOOD EVENING GUYS.

>> HI. MY NAME IS CHARLIE AND I'M IN FOURTH GRADE.

>> HI, MY NAME IS TURNER. I'M IN FOURTH GRADE.

>> THIS WEEK WE ARE CELEBRATING READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK.

WE WILL HAVE A SPIRIT WEEK AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WILL BE OUT TO SHARE DR. SEUSS'S BIRTHDAY WITH FUN HATS, BOOKS FOR FIRST GRADERS.

>> TUESDAY, WE HAVE OUR KID'S HEART CHALLENGE, KICKOFF AND ASSEMBLY.

EACH YEAR WE TYPICALLY EARN 8,000 THROUGH OUR JUMP ROPE

[00:25:01]

FOR HEART EFFORTS TO DONATE TO THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION.

>> FRIDAY WILL BE A WESTERN SPIRIT DAY CHOSEN BY FIRST GRADERS, FULFILLING ANOTHER 35 COUGAR POD JARS BY SHOWING OUR LEAD EXPECTATIONS, 187 SO FAR THIS YEAR.

GRADE LEVELS TAKE TURNS BY PLANNING THE SPIRITS DAYS.

>> ANOTHER WAY WE EARN SPIRIT DAYS IS THROUGH OUR READING HALL OF FAME LOGS.

SO FAR THIS YEAR WE'VE READ A TOTAL OF 716,903 MINUTES.

>> WE JUST BEGAN EARNING A GOLDEN TRAY AWARD IN THE CAFETERIA.

>> THE FOURTH-GRADE STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM PAINTED 38 KINDNESS ROCKS TO PLACE INTO OUR ENTRY DISPLAY CASE AND PUT THEM KINDNESS.

MY FAVORITE ACTIVITY AT CAPTAIN STRONG ARE THE PTA MOVIE NIGHT AND OPEN HOUSE.

>> DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

>> FIRST OFF, OUTSTANDING JOB.

>> YEAH.

>> VERY GOOD.

>> REALLY GOOD JOB. [APPLAUSE]

>> I THINK IT TAKES A LOT OF COURAGE TO COME UP HERE.

I REALLY JUST HAVE TO SAY, THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART OF BOARD MEETINGS IS GETTING TO HEAR WHAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING.

THANK YOU FOR COMING AND BEING BRAVE AND TELLING US ALL THAT'S GOING ON IN YOUR SCHOOL.

>> IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU GUYS ARE DOING A LOT OF THINGS.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITES THAT YOU'VE REALLY ENJOYED OR PARTICIPATED IN THAT YOU LIKED?

>> IT'S ALL REALLY FUN.

>> OH, GOOD. [LAUGHTER] THAT'S A GOOD ANSWER.

THAT'S A GREAT ANSWER.

I SEE YOUR PRINCIPAL IS BACK HERE.

I BET YOU SHE'S REAL PROUD OF YOU GUYS FOR GETTING UP HERE AND DOING THIS.

YOU'RE ONLY OUR SECOND PRIMARY SCHOOL THAT'S EVER COME AND PRESENTED FOR THE BOARD.

THAT'S PRETTY DARN GOOD.

OUTSTANDING JOB. THANK YOU YOU GUYS.

>> NICE JOB.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]

>> DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER STUDENT VOICE IN THE AUDIENCE? WITH THAT, I'M GOING TO MOVE ON TO OUR STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS.

I OWE YOU BOTH AN APOLOGY.

I REALIZED THAT WE PASSED A MOTION TWO WEEKS AGO THAT SAID WE WERE GOING TO GIVE YOU GUYS A THUMBS UP, THUMBS DOWN ON YOUR ADVISORY VOTES, AND I MISSED THE VERY FIRST ONE [LAUGHTER] ON THE AGENDA APPROVAL, SO I'M SORRY.

I WILL GET THE NEXT ONE.

I HOPE IF I DON'T, SOMEBODY HELPED ME.

[LAUGHTER] IT'S NEW, IN AMERICA WE KEEP SAYING THAT. IT TAKES A VILLAGE.

>> PLEASE FORGIVE ME. IT'S OKAY.

>> THANKS. SO WITH THAT, WHO'S GOING FIRST THIS TIME?

>> RICARDO.

>> I GUESS I HAVE A LOT.

[LAUGHTER] RECENTLY WENT TO THE INDUSTRY FARE AS A BOARD THAT WAS REALLY FUN.

IT WAS REALLY NICE TO SEE ALL THESE DIFFERENT PLACES THAT SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY AND ACTUALLY HAVE STUDENTS BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE AND HAVE WAYS TO FIND A JOB AND TO SUPPORT THEMSELVES FINANCIALLY IS ALSO REALLY GREAT.

LAST WEEK SARAH AND I WENT TO ENVOY AND TUBES VALLEY FOR O_2, AND THE INFORMATION THERE WE GOT LIKE SIX PAGES OF NOTES THAT WERE TAKEN FROM BOTH.

SO THAT WAS REALLY GREAT.

THIS WEEK PERRY IS HAVING ITS SPIRIT WEEK.

TO DATE WAS STOPLIGHT DAY, WHICH I'M NOT SUPER SURE WHAT IT WAS ABOUT BUT I KNOW IT HAPPENED, [LAUGHTER] AND TOMORROW IS CHARACTER DAY.

ZANADU JUST ENDED.

I'M REALLY PROUD AND REALLY HAPPY WITH HOW IT CAME OUT AND IT WAS JUST AN AMAZING SHOW.

GETTING TO SEE IT AS AN AUDIENCE MEMBER WAS REALLY EYE-OPENING. I WAS LIKE ALL.

[LAUGHTER] THEN AT THE SAME TIME THEY ALSO JUST ANNOUNCED TO THE STUDENTS WHAT SHOWS UP THERE DOING NEXT YEAR AND I DON'T KNOW IF I COULD SAY WHAT THE SHOWS ARE.

BUT THERE ARE SOME REALLY POPULAR SHOWS AND I THINK THAT EVERYONE'S GOING TO LIKE IT.

[00:30:01]

WE HAVE OUR DISCO DANCE ON THE BOARD.

WE JUST ANNOUNCED OUR MARCHING BAND THEME, WHICH IS TOP GUN, AND WE'RE PLAYING DANGER ZONE, THEN THE DISTRICT BAND FESTIVAL MOVED TO THE 21ST AND THAT'S ALL I HAD.

>> DO YOU KNOW WHY THAT MOVED?

>> IT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE OF ALL THE SNOW DAYS, THANKS TO LAURA. [LAUGHTER]

>> I MANIFESTED THIS NOTE IS SORRY ABOUT THAT GUYS.

[LAUGHTER] SPEAKING ON THAT, IT'S BEEN A VERY HECTIC WEEK FOR SURE.

I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S BEEN HECTIC, IT'S BEEN REALLY CALM ACTUALLY BUT WE ALL APPRECIATE ALL THE CONCERN FOR SAFETY AND GETTING TO SCHOOL WITH NO ISSUES.

OBVIOUSLY, IT'S CAUSED SOME HINDRANCES, ESPECIALLY IN AP CLASSES AND STUFF.

SO I KNOW THAT THERE HAS BEEN SOME STRESS THERE, BUT WE'LL MOVE PAST THAT.

I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I WANT TO SAY, "OH, RICARDO AND I HAVEN'T VISITED MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND WE'VE BEEN GETTING VOICE FROM STUDENTS IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND WE'RE VERY GRATEFUL FOR EVERYONE WHO IS ALLOWED THAT TO HAPPEN." WE'VE TALKED TO A LOT OF KIDS AND WE'VE BEEN SEEING SOME OF THEM COME UP AND REPORT AT OUR BOARD MEETINGS AS WELL.

SO IT'S REALLY NICE TO GET TO SEE THEM AGAIN AND SEE THEM COMING IN, UPDATING US EVEN MORE.

WE ARE DEVELOPING A LITTLE BIT OF A PRESENTATION FOR YOU GUYS ABOUT LIKE ALL THE FEEDBACK WE'VE GOTTEN FROM THOSE SCHOOLS.

THAT'LL BE COMING UP SHORTLY IN A LITTLE BIT.

BUT YEAH, THAT'S ABOUT IT.

THERE HASN'T BEEN A WHOLE LOT GOING ON.

>> I THINK WE'RE JUST MISSING TWO MORE MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE SOMETHING PREPARED FOR YOU.

[LAUGHTER] I DID FORGET TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE SPRING BAND CONCERT IS ON THE SEVENTH.

IT'S NOT GOING TO HAVE WIND ENSEMBLE, I BELIEVE, BECAUSE WE HAVE OUR NIGHT WITH WIND ENSEMBLE.

IT'LL HAVE JAZZ BANDS AND THEN CONCERT BAND AND THEN SYMPHONIC BAND, FROM WHAT I KNOW.

I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S MOVED BECAUSE OF THE SNOW DAYS, BUT THAT'S WHAT I HAVE ON THE CALENDAR.

>> I GUESS TODAY, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING SPORTS FOR THE HIGH SCHOOLS, WHICH I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S BEEN ALTERED AT ALL BUT YEAH, SO THOSE ARE STARTING UP INTO THE EXCITING FOR THIS COMING FEW WEEKS. THAT'S ALL.

>> I DO WANT TO SAY THAT I DID HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY, I KNEW THAT THEY WERE GOING TO BE SARAH AND RICARDO, WERE GOING TO BE OVER AND AMBULATE, AND SO I STARTED MY DAY OVER THERE LAST WEEK WHEN THEY WERE THERE.

I THINK IT WAS TUESDAY OVER THERE RIGHT AND JUST FANTASTIC.

THE TWO OF THEM, THEY'RE JUST LIKE PIED PIPER, [LAUGHTER] AND THE STUDENTS WERE JUST EXCITED AND VERY OPEN SHARING IDEAS AND SO I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE TWO OF YOU FOR TAKING THAT ON.

IT'S REALLY GOOD.

SO JUST APPRECIATE THAT.

I ALSO THINK THIS IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE HE'S SITTING HERE IS TO RECOGNIZE MR. LACOUNT BECAUSE HE'S THE ONE WHO'S BEEN PUTTING ALL OF THESE THINGS TOGETHER, WORKING WITH THE PRINCIPLES, COMING UP WITH THE SCHEDULES AND STUFF.

THANK YOU, MR. LACOUNT FOR YOUR WORK THERE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I JUST LIKE IT WHEN SARAH AND RICARDO WILL SAY HOW ABOUT NEXT TUESDAY? [LAUGHTER] IT'S LIKE HEY LUKE FIGURE THAT ONE OUT.

[LAUGHTER] THANK YOU, GUYS.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> ALL RIGHT. WITH THAT, WE WILL MOVE ON TO COMMITTEE REPORTS STARTING WITH THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE.

>> WELL, I ACTUALLY THINK I SHOULD TURN IT OVER TO MARK AND OUR STUDENT REPS BECAUSE YOU ATTENDED THERE ON THE HILL TODAY I UNDERSTAND.

>> YEAH WE DID. WE MADE THE DRIVE UP TO OLIVIA THIS MORNING, AND THAT WAS A LITTLE SCARY.

THERE WAS SOME SNOW FALLING IN THE MORNING, BUT I MADE IT THROUGH.

I PARALLEL-PARKED AS WELL.

SO THAT WAS VERY SCARY FOR ME.

>> I HAD TO GET OUT OF THIS CAR. [LAUGHTER]

>> YEAH. WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT IN ON A STUDENT BOARD REPRESENTATIVE MEETING AND A Q&A WITH ABUSE STATE SUPERINTENDENT, RAGDOLL.

OH MY GOSH, I CAN'T PRONOUNCE THAT NAME, BUT HE [LAUGHTER] ACTUALLY HAD A LOT OF REALLY INTERESTING INFORMATION TO SHARE WITH US AND MOSTLY ABOUT A LOT OF HOW LEGISLATURE WORKS, HOW A LOT OF THINGS ACTUALLY WORK THAT I REALLY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND BEFORE THAT.

I KIND OF STAYED SILENT BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW VERY MUCH, BUT I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER WHAT HE SAID.

BUT THERE WAS A LOT ABOUT THE LEGISLATURES THAT ARE TRYING TO BE PASSED RIGHT NOW OPEN THE STATE ABOUT TRANSPORTATION BILLS ABOUT SPECIAL ED FUNDING UP AT THE STATE, AND IT'S JUST REVEALED TO US THE COMPLEXITY OF ALL OF THESE THINGS, OF THE PHYSICAL STUFF IN THAT NATURE.

THEN RICARDO ADD-ON.

>> I THINK IT WAS REALLY INSPIRING TO SEE ALL OF OUR PEERS AS FAR AS SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS WATCHING EACH OTHER JUST LIKE BE ABLE TO OPENLY ASK QUESTIONS AND

[00:35:01]

HAVING AN UNDERSTANDING ABOUT WHAT EACH BILL REPRESENTED AND WHAT IT WAS ACTUALLY SUPPOSED TO DO.

IT'S REALLY GREAT TO KNOW THAT WE HAVE A SYSTEM WHERE WE AS STUDENTS FEEL SUPPORTED AND HEARD, AT LEAST FROM A LEGISLATIVE LEVEL. THERE WE GO.

>> YEAH, AS YOU PRINTED IT RIGHT THOUGH EVEN THOUGH HE IS AN ELECTED OFFICIAL, ESPECIALLY AT A HIGH LEVEL, HE INTERACTED WITH ALL OF THE STUDENTS THAT WERE THERE IN A REALLY RESPECTFUL AND NOT LIKE AN INFERIORITY COMPLEX TYPE OF WAY, WHICH I DON'T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN THAT VERY WELL, BUT IT WAS REALLY ENLIGHTENING TO SAY IN THAT AND HAVE A MATURE CONVERSATION WITH AN OFFICIAL OF THAT HIGH OF A STATUE THAT WAS VERY NICE TO BE ENGULFED IN.

>> I'LL PICK UP FROM THERE. ONE THING I WOULD LIKE THE AUDIENCE TO KNOW IS I DID MY FIRST DAY UNTIL FOUR YEARS AGO, AND THERE WAS MAYBE A HANDFUL OF STUDENTS, MAYBE SIX OR SO, AND SO TO SEE THE 40 PLUS STUDENTS, WHAT WE'RE FINDING IS SCHOOL BOARDS AROUND THE STATE ARE EMBRACING HAVING STUDENTS ON THEIR SCHOOL BOARD AND BRINGING THEM AS REPRESENTATIVES, AND WHEN WE GO SPEAK TO LEGISLATORS, OFTENTIMES THEY'RE THE FIRST ONES WHO GET TO SPEAK.

IN FACT THERE ARE WHO THE LEGISLATORS WANT TO SPEAK WITH.

BUT TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT I JUST SAID, THE STUDENTS THIS MORNING ASKED SUPERINTENDENT RIGHT ALL ABOUT INSTALLING SOLAR ON SCHOOLS, BOND FAILURES AND HOW TO REDUCE THEM, REGIONALIZATION FACTORS FOR DISTRICTS WITH LOW PROPERTY VALUES, CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS, TRANSPORTATION WORKFORCE AND DRIVER SHORTAGE, AND TEACHER WORKFORCE AND DRIVER SHORTAGE.

WE'RE TALKING ABOUT VERY AWARE KIDS THAT ARE OPERATED AND SUPERINTENDENT, RIGHT DOLL COULD SPEAK TO THE STUDENTS JUST EXACTLY LIKE HE SPOKE TO THE ADULTS THE NIGHT BEFORE WITH NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER.

THERE WAS A LOT OF TALENT IN THAT ROOM.

OTHER THAN THAT, I THINK ONE THING THAT REALLY IMPRESSED ME YESTERDAY, WE HAD THE LEAD FROM THE SENATE BOTH THE DEMOCRAT LEAD AND THE REPUBLICAN LEAD.

THE DEMOCRAT LEAD AND REPUBLICAN LEAD FROM THE HOUSE ADDRESS ALL THE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS THAT WERE THERE, AND I WAS AMAZED AT HOW THEY WERE FOCUSED ON LISTENING TO THE PRIMARY CONCERNS, SPECIAL ED FUNDING, AND TRANSPORTATION FUNDING, AND I REALLY CAME AWAY WITH THE IDEA THAT THEY WANT TO HELP SOLVE PROBLEMS. MAYBE THEY CAN'T PROMISE AS MUCH AS SOMETIMES BEING ASKED FOR, BUT THEY WANT TO MAKE PROGRESS AND IT REALLY FELT LIKE A WORKING TOGETHER SITUATION.

SO THAT WAS VERY ENCOURAGING.

I THINK WE ARE GOOD WITH THAT.

>> I HAVE A COUPLE THAT I'LL MENTION AND YOU MENTIONED THE SPECIAL ED AS IT MOVES THROUGH AND THE TRANSPORTATION.

OBVIOUSLY WAS IT CONTINUES TO MONITOR THAT.

ONE OF THE BILLS THAT'S MOVING FORWARD THAT I WAS INTERESTED IN AND I THINK THE STUDENTS WOULD BE INTERESTED IN AS WELL, EXPANDS ACCESS TO DUAL CREDIT PROGRAMS. SPECIFICALLY, THIS INCREASES THE REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR RUNNING START STUDENTS SO THAT THEY CAN TAKE SUMMER CLASSES.

AS IT IS RIGHT NOW, THEY DON'T GET REIMBURSED FOR SUMMER CLASSES.

I THOUGHT THAT'S AN INTERESTING ONE TO WATCH.

THEN THE OTHER ONE THE FREE SCHOOL MEALS FOR ALL.

JUST READING THROUGH THAT, THE COMPLEXITIES OF THAT BECAUSE MANY FUNDING SOURCES LIKE LAB AND NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION PAY ARE TIED TO FREE AND REDUCED MEAL NUMBERS IN THE DISTRICT AND IT'S A VERY COMPLEX SYSTEM.

RIGHT NOW WHAT'S HAPPENING IS THEY'RE TRYING TO WORK THROUGH HOW THOSE PROGRAMS WOULD BE. AM I SAYING THIS RIGHT? HOW THEY WOULD BE FUNDED IF WE DON'T HAVE A FREE AND REDUCED MEAL APPLICATION.

SOME COMPLEXITIES THERE, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE THAT IS MOVING FORWARD AND THERE'S A WORK GROUP WORKING ON THAT FUNDING PART OF THAT.

THAT'S WHAT I HAVE TO REPORT.

>> THANK YOU. DO WE HAVE AN AUDIT COMMITTEE REPORT TONIGHT?

>> COMING UP IN MARCH?

>> WE DID HEAR FROM THE EDUCATION FOUNDATION.

DO WE HAVE ANYTHING ADDITIONAL TO REPORT?

>> I DON'T THINK SO. I THINK WE COVERED IT ALL. DIDN'T WE COLLEEN?

>> SHE LEFT.

>> OH, SHE LEFT. WELL, I THINK WE'RE GOOD.

[LAUGHTER]

>> WIAA.

>> WE HAD A COUPLE OF THINGS TIES INTO SOME OF THE LEGISLATIVE STUFF AS WELL IS THE CLASSIFICATION COMMITTEE MET AND THEY'RE BRAINSTORMING WAYS TO ADDRESS THE CHANGE IN ENROLLMENT OF SAY,

[00:40:07]

THE FREE AND REDUCED AND HOW THAT'S GOING TO IMPACT CLASSIFICATIONS GOING FORWARD.

THEY'RE SCRAMBLING TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER ON THAT, WHICH IS ACTUALLY GOOD BECAUSE IT'S OPENED UP THE CONVERSATION TO DIFFERENT METHODS OF CALCULATING AND DIFFERENT CONSIDERATIONS WHEN LOOKING AT INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN ASSESSING WHAT THEIR INDIVIDUAL CHALLENGES ARE AND NOT NECESSARILY PUTTING IT JUST IN A ECONOMIC STANDPOINT OF WHAT THIS FAMILY HAS AND THAT FAMILY HAS AND WHAT THEIR DEMOGRAPHICS ARE.

THERE'S SOME GOOD CONVERSATION ON GOING THERE, SO WE'LL KEEP YOU GUYS UPDATED.

BUT IT'S CERTAINLY ON THE WAI'S FOREFRONT OF POTENTIAL ISSUES COMING UP.

THE AMENDMENTS ARE STILL IN DISCUSSION.

THERE HASN'T BEEN A FINAL VOTE ON THOSE YET.

I KNOW I BRIEFED HIM LAST TIME WE HAD A MEETING, SO AS SOON AS WE GET SOME MORE INFORMATION ON THAT, I'LL PROVIDE THAT OUT.

AT THIS POINT IT'S JUST BEEN CLARIFICATIONS NOTHING PRETTY SIGNIFICANT THERE.

WE TALKED ABOUT WINTER TOURNAMENTS COMING UP.

WE HAD SOME RULE VIOLATIONS, WE WENT THROUGH A COUPLE OF OBJECTIONS.

STANDARD BUSINESS FOR THE MOST PART.

>> DO WE HAVE ANY UPDATES FROM WASDA COMMITTEES?

>> AGAIN, LEGISLATIVE-RELATED, BUT I'M ON THE TRUST LANDS COMMITTEE.

JUST A QUICK REMINDER.

TRUST LANDS ARE WASHINGTON STATE OWN LANDS THAT HAD BEEN DEDICATED, THAT IF THEY GENERATE REVENUE, USUALLY TIMBER REVENUE IS THE NUMBER 1 PART OF THAT.

THAT CAN GO INTO THE GENERAL FUND, BUT IT'S EARMARKED TOWARDS HELPING BUILD SCHOOLS.

YOU'VE HEARD ME REPORT ON IN THE PAST.

ONE OF THOSE WOULD MOVE THE FUNDS GENERATED BY TIMBER, WHICH HAS BEEN DWINDLING RAPIDLY TO SPECIFICALLY THE COUNTIES AND THE SCHOOLS THAT ACTUALLY PRODUCE THAT TIMBER.

SKAMANIA, [INAUDIBLE], PLACES LIKE THAT.

MANY TIMES THOSE SAME COUNTIES ARE ONES THAT ARE HAVING TROUBLE PASSING BONDS AND REPLACING THEIR SCHOOLS.

THIS WOULD REALLY HELP THEM.

I'M PLEASED TO REPORT THAT THROUGH CONTINUED NEGOTIATIONS THAT THE MAIN BILL ON THAT SENATE BILL 5126 LOOKS LIKE IT'S MOVING FORWARD WITH BI-PARTISAN SUPPORT.

THEY'RE GOING TO MAYBE START WITH A LOWER AMOUNT THAN THEY FIRST ASKED FOR, BUT SCALE IT UP OVER TIME, WHICH IS HOW THE COMPROMISES HAPPEN AT THE LEGISLATURE TO MAKE EVERYTHING FIT.

THEY ALSO ARE POSITIVE ABOUT THE TRUST LAND TRANSFER.

THAT'S IF ANY OF THE TRUST LANDS GET MOVED TO A DIFFERENT PURPOSE, THAT WE DON'T LOSE THE REVENUE FOR THAT TO HELP SCHOOLS.

THE OLD RULE WAS A 20% FOR ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

THEY DID SOME NEGOTIATION AND GOT THEM TO AGREE TO A 100% MATCH WOULD GO UP SO THE SCHOOLS WOULD NOT LOSE ANY ON THAT LINE.

THAT WAS A VICTORY FOR WASDA AND THE DNR NEGOTIATING TOGETHER.

IT LOOKS LIKE BOTH THE TRUST LAND ISSUES ARE MOVING FORWARD FAVORABLY AT THIS TIME.

YOU NEVER KNOW UNTIL THEY DO THE FINAL VOTE, BUT MOSTLY POSITIVE REPORT.

>> WITH THAT, WE'LL MOVE ON TO TOURS.

THERE WAS A TOUR AT PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY.

TURN THAT ONE OVER TO YOU.

>> YEAH, THAT'S ME. FIND MY NOTES.

LOVE PLEASANT VALLEY AND GOING OVER THERE, WE HAD A GREAT TIME.

I WAS PARTICULARLY IMPRESSED WITH THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CRAIG AND CARE THERE THEY WORKED REALLY WELL TOGETHER AS A TEAM.

I REALLY CAME ACROSS TO ME HOW THEY'RE SYSTEMS THINKERS.

I CREDIT OUR ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT ASKING THE ADMINISTRATORS TO BE SYSTEMS THINKERS AND REALLY FIGURE OUT WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO MOVE OUR STAFF ALONG AS A WHOLE AND NOT JUST PUT OUT LITTLE FIRES HERE AND THERE.

I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED.

ONE EXAMPLE HE GAVE IS HOW THE WAIVER DAYS THAT WE INSTITUTED THIS YEAR REALLY HAVE NORMALIZED THE WHOLE IDEA OF THE PLC WORK AND THAT IS JUST ONGOING WORK THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO AND NOT A ONETIME DEAL.

I THINK THAT'S REALLY GOOD.

THE OTHER THING HE INSTITUTED THAT I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED WITH WAS ONCE A MONTH PARENT OUTREACH MEETING.

SPECIFICALLY BRINGING PARENTS AND ASKING FOR THEIR INPUT, GOING OUT OF HIS WAY AND HAPPENING AT THE SCHOOL LEVEL.

[00:45:03]

WE CERTAINLY WANT TO DO THAT AT THE BOARD LEVEL, BUT WE LOVE TO HEAR THAT HAPPENING AT THE INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL LEVEL THAT INFECTS.

THEN THEY PUT TOGETHER A REALLY COOL LEARNING WALL WHERE HE PURPOSELY ASKED TEACHERS, DON'T JUST HIGHLIGHT THE STARS IN YOUR CLASS AND THE KID IS ALREADY ACADEMICALLY ADVANCED BUT HIGHLIGHT THE KIDS THAT ARE MAKING THE MOST GROWTH, EVEN IF THEY'RE STARTING FROM A LOWER PLACE DOWN.

I THOUGHT THAT WAS GREAT. IT SOUNDS LIKE IT'S BEEN VERY WELL-RECEIVED.

>> CELEBRATING SUCCESS.

>> THAT WAS BIG. THEN WE'VE GOT GRILLED A LITTLE BIT BY THE FOURTH.

[OVERLAPPING] YOU WANT TO DO IT? I'LL TURN IT OVER TO YOU.

>> WE WENT INTO SOME WONDERFUL CLASSROOMS AND ALL OF THE TEACHERS AT PLEASANT VALLEY, WE SAW SOME GREAT THINGS, BUT WE DID GO INTO MS. MARINA HEINZ CLASSROOM, FOURTH-GRADE CLASS.

THEY WERE READY. THEY GOT ALL THEIR QUESTIONS AND ASKED THEM SOME TOUGH ONES.

DID YOU WRITE DOWN SOME OF THE QUESTIONS THEY ASKED?

>> OH, YEAH. WE GOT TO IMPROVE THE PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT FOR SURE.

[LAUGHTER] I GOT TO HOLD THIS FIELD TODAY.

>> THEY'VE GOT A SOGGY PLAYGROUND.

>> THEY HAVE A ROUGH PLAYGROUND.

>> WE'RE GOING TO WORK ON FIXING THE SOGGY PLAYGROUND.

>> IT'S DOABLE.

>> YES, VERY DOABLE. THE PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT EVEN WAS A BIG ONE.

THEY LIKE THEIR MONKEY BARS.

>> FOUR OR FIVE DIFFERENT PEOPLE SAID AND THEY WERE GETTING AMBITIOUS.

I DON'T KNOW, WE MIGHT GET RISK MANAGEMENT.

[LAUGHTER].

>> VERY NICE. LIKE MARK SAID, IT'S A WONDERFUL VISIT. VERY IMPRESSIVE.

>> THANKS. I WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE.

WE ALSO HAVE A TORT CHIEF WITH GROUP 2.

>> CHIEF WAS GREAT. THEY ARE LUCKY TO GET ME OUT OF THE STEM CLASSROOM.

THAT WAS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE PART.

I THINK THEY HAVE WHAT, SIX 3D PRINTERS IN THERE?

>> OH, AT LEAST THREE.

>> THERE'S QUITE A FEW. I THINK, SAW AN HOUR OF GETTING A TUTORIAL FROM ONE OF THE STUDENTS ON HOW TO DO THAT AND I SAT WITH TONY [INAUDIBLE].

HE WAS TAKING ME THROUGH THE CODING ON A VIDEO GAME HE WAS DOING SO THAT WAS COOL.

I REALLY ENJOYED THE STEM CLASS.

>> ROB.

>> I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY JUST THE OVERVIEW HOW GOOD IT FELT TO BE IN THAT SCHOOL.

I THINK IT COMES FROM THE TOP-DOWN.

WHEN YOU HAD THE PRINCIPAL AND THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AND IT JUST GOES DOWN THROUGH THE TEACHERS AND TO THE STUDENTS AND YOU REALLY COULD FEEL THAT CHIEF.

I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THAT, COMING AWAY WITH THAT.

THAT WAS MY BIG OVERTAKE.

IT WAS JUST REALLY A PLEASURABLE EXPERIENCE.

WE DIDN'T GET PEPPERED WITH ANY QUESTIONS BY STUDENTS, BUT IT WAS JUST A REALLY GOOD TIME AND GOOD TO BE WITH THE KIDS.

>> I WOULD ECHO THAT.

I THINK WE SAW A LITTLE BIT OF IT TONIGHT IN THE REPORT THAT WE GOT FROM CHIEF MIDDLE SCHOOL, BUT YOU CAN SEE IT IN THE KIDS IN THE ACTIVITIES THAT THEY WERE A PART OF, THAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT HOW IT WAS CREATING A CULTURE AT THEIR SCHOOL THAT WAS WARM AND WELCOMING FOR EVERYONE.

THERE WERE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL KIDS AND IT WAS NICE BECAUSE WHEN WE WERE OUT IN THE CLASSROOM, WE HAD TWO STUDENTS, RYAN AND CHRISTINA, THAT WALKED US AROUND AND WERE TELLING US A LITTLE TIDBITS ABOUT THE COURSES THEY'D TAKEN IN THE CLASSES THEY WERE IN AND WHATNOT.

IT JUST ADDED A WHOLE LEVEL TO THE TOUR TO HAVE THEM LEAD US THROUGH THAT AND SEE IT THROUGH THEIR EYES.

IT WAS A GREAT TOUR.

IT WAS SAD TO REALIZE THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE ROB'S LAST TOUR SO WE MADE SURE THAT WE GAVE HIM A HARD TIME ABOUT IT.

[LAUGHTER]

>> IT'S ALL GOOD.

>> I ALSO REALLY ENJOYED IT AND I MIGHT BE A LITTLE BIT BIASED BECAUSE I DID GO THERE, BUT I'M ALWAYS SUPER IMPRESSED WITH THE EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES LIKE YOU WERE SAYING THAT CHIEF HAS AND HOW CARRIERS SO CASUALLY TALKED ABOUT THE FUTURE CITY GOING TO STAY.

THE FUTURE CITY PROGRAM, WHERE THEY DESIGN AN ENTIRE CITY AND TRY TO FIX.

I THINK THIS YEAR'S THEME THEY SAID WAS CLIMATE CHANGE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

THEY FIX MAJOR ISSUES WITHIN THEIR CITIES AND IT'S SO INCREDIBLE TO SEE THINGS LIKE THAT.

I THINK THE DREAM TEAM, THEY MENTIONED THAT, BUT THEY WERE GOING TO DO SOMETHING WITH LEGISLATURE AND DOING STUFF LIKE THAT IN MIDDLE-SCHOOL CREATES SUCH A PATHWAY AS THEY CONTINUE TO GROW AND THAT'S VERY INCREDIBLE. IT'S COOL TO SEE.

>> WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE TOURS COMING UP AGAIN IN MARCH THE 3RD, THE 10TH AND THE 24TH.

>> I NEED TO ASK A QUESTION BECAUSE I THOUGHT WE HAD GOOD THREE-HEADED TOUR THIS FRIDAY AS WELL, BUT I'M NOT SEEING IT ON THE LIST.

>> LET ME CHECK INTO THAT AND I CAN CONFIRM IN THE OFFICE IF THERE IS SOMETHING.

[00:50:04]

>> THANK YOU.

>> I'LL OFFER UP MY SPOT AT YAK COLD.

I HAVE A CONFLICTING MEETING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.

>> IF WE DON'T HAVE A TOUR, THEN I'LL TAKE YOU UP ON THAT.

NEXT WE HAVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT.

>> I ATTENDED THE CARS PRESENTATION AT CAPTAIN STRONG AND I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH ALISON AND DAVID AND THE TEAM AND HOW THEY HAD PRESENTED EVERYTHING IN A PLACE WHERE TEACHERS COULD COME THROUGH, EITHER IN GROUPS, OR INDIVIDUALLY, AND TAKE A LOOK AT ALL THE MATERIALS AND HANDLE THEM, AND THAT'S WHAT I SAID.

I CAN LOOK AT EVERYTHING ONLINE, BUT I LIKE TO SEE WHAT THOSE MATERIALS REALLY FEEL LIKE AND THE VISUAL IS JUST AMAZING, BUT I THINK TOO, IT GIVES TEACHERS A CHANCE TO TALK ABOUT IT TOGETHER WITH THE MATERIALS IN FRONT OF THEM.

I'M SURE ALISON WILL BE TELLING US MORE ABOUT HOW THE PILOT IS GOING, BUT IT SOUNDED LIKE THE PILOT IS GOING WELL WITH THE TWO DIFFERENT CURRICULUMS THAT THEY'VE CHOSEN, AND I HEARD TEACHERS COME AND TALK TO THEM ABOUT IT AND THEN THEY WERE GOING IN TO WATCH THE ONE OF THE TEACHERS AS SHE WAS USING THE MATERIALS.

SO SHE HAD PREPLANNE, AND SO IT GIVES THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO INTO CLASSROOMS AND SEE IT AND USE IT GIVES TEACHERS A CHANCE TO SEE IT IN ONE SPOT.

SO I WAS EXCITED ABOUT THAT WAS FUN AND I'D LIKE TO DO ANOTHER ONE ACTUALLY.

>> I ATTENDED THE INDUSTRY FAIR AND I WAS REALLY BLOWN AWAY BY THE AMOUNT OF VENDORS, HOW IT WAS ORGANIZED.

I STOPPED BY EVERY ONE OF THEM AND TALKED TO SEVERAL OF THEM AND I WAS AMAZED AT, I THINK I'VE PROBABLY TALKED TO A FEW OF YOU ABOUT THIS, BUT HOW MANY WERE HIRING SCIENCE, IT WAS JUST AMAZING.

I WAS TALKING TO ONE GENTLEMAN, HE WAS SAYING THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE THAT WAY FOR A YEAR OR TWO WHERE THERE'S MORE EMPLOYMENT OUT THERE, NOT ENOUGH WORKERS AND SO THEY'RE TRYING THERE.

IT WAS JUST AMAZING. IT WAS GOOD.

I'VE BEEN TO SEVERAL INDUSTRY FARES, THIS IS THE FIRST ONE EVERYWHERE I'VE SEEN 75 PERCENT OF THEM HAD WERE HIRING.

>> I WAS JUST IMPRESSED WITH THE NUMBER OF OUR OWN COMMUNITY BASES THAT WERE THERE, WHICH IS NICE TO SEE THAT CONNECTION WITH SERVING OUR OWN COMMUNITY VERSUS REGIONAL EMPLOYERS OR PEOPLE IN VANCOUVER.

IT'S A LOT OF BUSINESSES.

>> I'D LIKE TO ADD TO THAT IF I CAN.

SO I WENT AROUND THE TABLES AND REALIZE THAT ALL IN SON'S PUMP COMPANY INSTALLED HOT WATER PUMP IN MY HOUSE IN 1987.

IT'S STILL IN BUSINESS AND STILL BEEN HIRED.

I KNOW ONE OF THE VERY FIRST FOUR-YEAR GRADUATES AT THE CASING PROGRAM, WHICH IS NOW TURNING 30.

PRAIRIE ELECTRIC HAS BEEN IN THIS COMMUNITY FOREVER, WIRED MY HOUSE AND THINGS LIKE THAT AND WE HAD A PERSON FROM THE LOCAL DNR, OPPOSITE WAS WILLING TO COME AND TALK TO STUDENTS ABOUT JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN COMING TO SCHOOL. IT WAS GREAT.

>> ACTUALLY, I STOPPED BY THERE AS WELL AND I WAS ALSO SURPRISED ABSOLUTELY HOW PACKED IT WAS.

IT WAS STANDING ROOM ONLY, AND I ACTUALLY LIKE THAT EVEN THOUGH WE HAD SOME TEACHERS, THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT THEIR CURRICULUMS FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE.

>> THE HOST SAYS HE WAS THERE AT THE HEALTH OCCUPATIONS.

>> YES. I ACTUALLY ASKED WHERE I SPENT MOST TIME WAS AT THAT COMPUTER.

I WAS WATCHING THE ROBOTS GOING [LAUGHTER] SCHOOL WHERE I WAS THE PRESIDENT, BUT YEAH, THAT WAS FUN.

>> I DIDN'T TALK TO A LOT OF THE VENDORS, BUT I'VE LISTENED, EAVESDROPPED MORE AND I WAS SO IMPRESSED BY SOME OF THE STUDENTS OR YOUNG JOB SEEKERS, MAYBE ONE IN PARTICULAR, THIS YOUNG GENTLEMAN WALKED UP AND HE SAID, I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT TO DO.

WILL YOU TELL ME WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFER AND JUST LIKE, I COULD HAVE NEVER DONE THAT.

AND I'M GUESSING HE WAS 16-18 ISH, AND THAT'S A ROUGH GUESS BECAUSE KILLING PEOPLE OR IT'S JUST A ROUGH GUESS ANYWAYS.

BUT JUST IMPRESSED, AND THEY WERE LIKE, YEAH, LET ME TELL YOU.

JUST THAT HE WAS JUST ABSORBED IT.

IT WAS JUST FANTASTIC TO SEE IT AND TO HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY AND I KNOW IT WASN'T THE ONLY PLACE HE STOPPED.

SO TO HAVE THAT OUT THERE AND IN FRONT OF YOU AND TO JUST GET TO PICK AND CHOOSE AND LEARN, THAT WAS REALLY COOL TO SEE WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE COMMUNITY TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THAT EVENT.

[00:55:06]

>> I WOULD JUST LIKE TO THANK CINDY ARNOLD AND HER TEAM FOR ALL THE WORK THAT THEY DID TO PUT THAT ON BECAUSE IT IS A BIG UNDERTAKING AND A LOT OF WORK TO DO THAT, BUT THEY DO A NICE JOB EVERY YEAR IT GROWS AND IT IS MORE IMPRESSIVE EACH YEAR.

>> ANY OTHER DIRECTOR REPORTS TO SHARE? WELL, WITH THAT, WE WILL MOVE ON TO SUPERINTENDENT AND STAFF UPDATES MR. WATERS.

[7. Superintendent and Staff Updates]

>> THANK YOU. IN MY COMPUTER AGAIN.

SO FROM A SUPERINTENDENT UPDATE, FIRST OF ALL, LET'S TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER.

WE LOVE THE WEATHER.

WE ARE BLAMING SARAH.

I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT TWO WEEKS AGO WE EXITED THE BOARD MEETING AND SARAH SAID IT MIGHT SNOW TOMORROW.

COULD YOU CALL A SNOW DAY? I WAS LIKE, SORRY, IT'S NOT GOING TO SNOW AND WE CALL IT A SNOW DAY.

THEN LAST WEEK ON TUESDAY, WE HAD A SPECIAL MEETING AND AS WE WERE WALKING THROUGH THE PARKING LOT, SARAH SAID, I THINK IT'S GOING TO SNOW AGAIN.

CAN YOU CALL IT A SNOW DAY? HERE WE ARE NOW ON FOUR CONSECUTIVE SNOW DAYS.

[LAUGHTER] I'VE TOLD SARAH, THAT'S WHEN WE WERE WALKING OUT TODAY, SHE NEEDS TO TELL ME.

DANNY, I REALLY WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL TOMORROW.

>> I SAID I WASN'T GOING TO GO THAT FAR.

>> I'M GOING TO SAY THAT. LET'S SEE HOW THAT GOES.

>> WE'LL SEE.

>> WE HAVE HAD FOR SNOW DAYS, THE NORTH HAS JUST BEEN SOUGHT IN.

I LIVE UP THAT DIRECTION.

I'M SURE EVERYBODY HAS SEEN THE PICTURES.

I STILL HAVE PROBABLY FOUR OR FIVE SIX INCHES OF SNOW ON THE GROUND AT MY HOUSE.

IF I DIDN'T HAVE FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE, I'M NOT GETTING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY.

SO IT IS SIGNIFICANT UP THERE AND FOR US, IT COMES DOWN TO THE SIDE ROADS.

WE ACTUALLY HAD THE BUSES OUT.

WE WERE HOPEFUL THAT WE CALL A TWO-HOUR LATE START TODAY FOR THE NORTH.

WEATHER IN THE SOUTH WAS GREAT.

WE WERE HOPEFUL THAT WE WERE GOING TO GET THE DAY AND IT STARTED SNOWING AGAIN AND THE PLOWS JUST NEVER MADE IT.

SO WE'LL SEE WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS.

THERE'S A FORECAST THAT SAYS ANYWHERE FROM 2-5 " WITH 500 FEET OR ABOVE.

SO WE JUST HAVE TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

JUST SO EVERYBODY KNOWS WE NOW HAVE HAD FIVE SNOW DAYS FOR THE NORTH, AND WE'VE HAD THREE SNOW DAYS FOR THE SOUTH.

WE DO HAVE A SNOW MAKEUP DAY SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 17TH, WHICH WE WILL BE USING.

I HAVE HAD A FEW STAFF AND A FEW PARENTS ASK ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF MAKING UP DAYS DURING SPRING BREAK.

WE ARE NOT ABLE TO DO THAT, NUMBER ONE BECAUSE IT'S LAID AT THIS POINT AND MANY STUDENTS, MANY FAMILIES, MANY STAFF ALREADY HAVE PLANS AND WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO CHANGE THAT.

RIGHT NOW WE'RE LOOKING FOR PRIORITY FOR THE SOUTH.

PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL WOULD BE ONE OF THOSE SCHOOLS ENDING ON A FRIDAY, I BELIEVE.

AND THEN BATTLE GROUND AND THE NORTHERN SCHOOLS ENDING ON THE 21ST OF JUNE.

I WOULD SAY THAT THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF GETTING WAIVER DAYS.

WAIVER DAYS ARE OFTENTIMES GRANTED BY THE STATE FOR ANY REGIONS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER.

BUT IT HAS TO BE DECLARED AN EMERGENCY BY THE GOVERNOR AND I'M NOT SURE THAT THEY HAVE DONE THAT AT THIS POINT, BUT WE WILL KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THAT.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT WE COULD WAVE MOST LIKELY TWO OF THOSE DAYS WE COULD WAVE.

WHAT THAT WOULD DO IS THAT WOULD FREE STUDENTS UP STAFF WOULD STILL REPORT TO THOSE DAYS ON WORK FOR WORK, AND WE WOULD USE THOSE DAYS TO DO SOME PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, WHICH WE COULD CERTAINLY USE, ESPECIALLY WITH NEW CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS HEADED OUR WAY.

SO WE'LL KEEP YOU INFORMED ALL OF THAT.

ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WEATHER AND SNOW DAYS? YES.

>> STOP.

>> WE'RE STILL PROBABLY NOT YET OUT OF THE WOODS.

>> YEAH.

>> NO.

>> NO, WE'RE NOT. ALL OF THIS.

I THINK TODAY AND TOMORROW ARE KEY DAYS, AND THEN WHO KNOWS WHAT THE NEXT WEEK IS? WE'VE HAD SNOW UP IN MARCH. JUST DON'T KNOW.

>> IT'S NOT APRIL LAST YEAR?

>> YEAH.

>> YEAH.

>> JUST COULDN'T SAY.

>> I DO WANT TO SAY THAT EVEN THOUGH WE WERE OUT OF SCHOOL FOR MOST OF LAST WEEK,

[01:00:06]

LAST WEEK WAS SCHOOL BUS APPRECIATION DAY.

[LAUGHTER].

WE GAVE THEM A WEEK OFF.

WE SAID [LAUGHTER] IT'S A NATIONAL SCHOOL BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK, FEBRUARY 20 TO 24TH.

JUST FOR SOME STATISTICS, NEARLY 9,000 STUDENTS IN BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS RIDE THE BUS TO AND FROM SCHOOL.

DRIVERS FOR FIRST STUDENT, THE DISTRICT'S TRANSPORTATION SERVICE PROVIDER, DRIVE NEARLY I DIDN'T REALIZE THIS.

DRIVE NEARLY TWO MILLION TOTAL MILES EACH YEAR.

BUS DRIVERS OFTEN THE FIRST AND THE LAST PHASE IS THAT STUDENTS SEE DURING THEIR SCHOOL DAY, AND WE CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THE POSITIVE IMPACT THAT THEY HAVE ON OUR STUDENTS AND OUR ENTIRE SCHOOL COMMUNITY SO ONE MORE TIME.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR BUS DRIVERS FOR ALL THAT YOU DO AND HAPPY SCHOOL BUS APPRECIATION WEEK.

NEXT, BUT NOT LEAST, I GAVE YOU GUYS A BUNCH OF DOCUMENTS.

IF YOU WOULD TAKE JUST TAKE A LOOK JUST REAL QUICKLY.

THE JUUL SETTLEMENT AND SOCIAL MEDIA LAWSUIT, THAT'S THE TITLE OF IT.

IF YOU REMEMBER, SOME MONTHS BACK, YOU GAVE US PERMISSION TO ENTER INTO THE LAWSUIT AGAINST JUUL, WHICH IS THE VAPING COMPANY THAT PROVIDES VAPE PENS AND SUCH.

JUUL IS ONE OF THE COMPANIES.

THE LAWSUIT IS CONTINUING FOR THE OTHER COMPANIES, BUT JUUL SETTLE THE LAWSUIT, AND I AM PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE PRELIMINARY SETTLEMENT AMOUNT FOR THE BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT IS BETWEEN 322 AND $348,000.

WE'LL BE RECEIVING THAT MUCH, MINUS LAWYER FEES, WHICH ARE APPROXIMATELY 35 PERCENT.

OUR JUDGMENT WILL BE SOMEWHERE IN THE $200,000 RANGE.

I'M BRINGING THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION BECAUSE HOPEFULLY AT OUR NEXT BOARD MEETING, I'LL BE BRINGING SOME OFFICIAL SETTLEMENT DOCUMENTS THAT HAVE YET TO ARRIVE TO THE BOARD FOR APPROVAL.

WE WILL HAVE THAT UNDER A NEW BUSINESS AGENDA ITEM AND WE'LL PRESENT THAT INFORMATION, AND WHAT THE BOARD WILL HAVE TO DO IS DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT THEY WANT TO ACCEPT THAT SETTLEMENT, AND THEN YOU'LL NOTICE THAT THERE IS A ANOTHER LAWSUIT, A SOCIAL MEDIA LAWSUIT.

THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND WHAT THE EFFECT THAT IT'S HAVING ON KID DOESN'T TALK ABOUT IT HERE.

IT MENTIONS IT IN THE TITLE THERE.

BUT WITH THE BOARD'S APPROVAL, I WOULD LIKE TO EXPLORE THAT.

GATHER SOME INFORMATION.

WE WOULD MOST LIKELY HAVE TO COME BACK TO YOU AT A LATER DATE AND YOU WOULD HAVE TO VOTE ON GIVING ME PERMISSION TO PROCEED IN THAT MANNER.

BUT SINCE THIS LAWSUIT WAS SUCCESSFUL IN SOME WAYS FOR US TO RECOUP SOME MONEY.

I'M HOPING THE SAME MIGHT BE TRUE FOR THE OTHER.

ANY QUESTIONS ON THE JUUL SETTLEMENT? ALSO, YOU HAVE IN YOUR PACKET IS YOU HAVE THE FIRST DRAFT OF OUR ENROLLMENTS STUDY.

WE JUST GOT THIS.

I REALLY HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO DIGEST ALL THE INFORMATION.

BUT THIS IS GOING TO BE PART OF WHAT WE COVER IN OUR APRIL WORK SESSION AT THE END OF THE MONTH.

IT LAYS INTO THE BOND WHETHER OR NOT WE NEED A NEW BUILDING WHERE WE ARE WITH ALL OF THAT.

I THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE IT TO YOU TONIGHT AND HAVE YOU GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET YOUR EYES ON IT AND TO GO THROUGH WHAT YOU CAN SEE IS THAT IF YOU LOOK TOWARDS THE BACK THERE, YOU WILL SEE THAT WE ARE OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS PROJECTED TO GAIN ABOUT, DEPENDING ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT.

EITHER THE LOW SCENARIO IS 1,000 STUDENT GROWTH, BUT THE HIGH SCENARIO IS A 3,000 STUDENTS GROWTH.

WITH THE MAJORITY OF OUR GROWTH.

NOT SURPRISINGLY, BUT INTERESTINGLY, HAPPENING IN THE SOUTH END, BUT ALSO HAPPENING IN OUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS.

I'LL LET YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THAT. THIS IS A DRAFT.

WE HAVE A MEETING SCHEDULED WITH

[01:05:04]

FLOW ANALYTICS COMING UP IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS WHERE THEY'RE GOING TO GO THROUGH THE RESULTS, AND WE'LL BE ABLE TO SHARE THAT INFORMATION WITH YOU AS WE'RE MOVING FORWARD.

ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT? ALSO IN THE SAME BREATH TO KEEP YOU ON BOARD BECAUSE WE ARE CONSIDERING A BOND.

I THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THIS DOCUMENT RIGHT HERE, WHICH IS THE RESULTS OF THE LATEST FEBRUARY ELECTION RESULTS.

ONE OF THE DISHEARTENING THINGS THAT YOU CAN SEE.

THERE WERE EIGHT BONDS RUN IN THE STATE, AND ONLY ONE BOND REACH THE SUPER MAJORITY, AND THAT WAS FAIRLY AT A 60.91 FOR PASCO SCHOOL DISTRICT, BUT ALL THE OTHER BONDS DID FAIL.

CLARK COUNTY HAD A PARTICULAR OR OUR REGION HAD A PARTICULARLY TOUGH ELECTION CYCLE.

BONDS FAILED IN OUR LEVIES FAILED IN WOODLAND AND WASHOUGAL AND WASHOUGAL ALSO FAILED TO PASS A CAPITAL LEVY.

I JUST THINK THAT THIS IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOU TO HAVE AS WE AGAIN APPROACH THAT APRIL WORK SESSION ON A BOND.

JUST GOOD INFORMATION, MORE BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR YOU AS BOARD MEMBERS CAN HAPPEN.

ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT? THEN LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I DID PUT TOGETHER A ROUGH DRAFT OF A LETTER OF CONCERN, I WOULDN'T CALL IT A LETTER OF OPPOSITION.

AFTER RECEIVING SOME INDIVIDUAL COMMENTS FROM BOARD MEMBERS THAT WE WERE ABLE TO SOLICIT.

IT SEEMED LIKE A LETTER OF CONCERN WAS MORE IN LINE WITH WHAT THE BOARD WAS INTERESTED IN.

THERE WAS A CONCERN ABOUT SOME OF THE VERBIAGE AND AT FIRST DRAFTS, SO WE CHANGED IT A LITTLE BIT.

BUT IF YOU'LL TAKE A LOOK AT THAT, THERE DOESN'T NEED TO BE ANY VOTE TAKEN ON IT.

BUT IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER COMMENTS, FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT DIRECTLY TO ME AND WE CAN GO FROM THERE.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT? IT IS FULL OF INFORMATION.

>> I'LL GO BACK ONE AND JUST ONE OTHER LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.

THERE WAS A LOT OF STUFF GOING ON THERE.

THE SIMPLE MAJORITY ON BONDS DID IN FACT FAIL.

BUT REPRESENTATIVE PARIS FROM THE 17TH DISTRICT WHO USED TO REPRESENT OUR AREA, HAS OFFERED A COMPROMISE, 55 PERCENT, AND IF YOU LOOK AT THE NUMBERS, THE BONDS HERE, AND THERE SEEMED TO BE SOME SUPPORT, IT'S BEEN A HEAVY LIFT TO CHANGE THAT 60 PERCENT.

BUT THERE WAS ACTUALLY A LITTLE BIT OF HOPEFULNESS.

>> YEAH 55 PERCENT WOULD CERTAINLY HELP US.

THAT'S IT FOR ME. I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO TEACHING AND LEARNING. SHELLEY WHITTEN.

>> JUST A QUICK UPDATE FOR YOU TONIGHT WE HAVE, AS YOU KNOW, THE CTE FIVE-YEAR PLAN IS UP FOR REVIEW UNDER NEW BUSINESS THIS EVENING AND PRIOR TO THAT, I AM HAPPY TO SAY THAT CINDY ARNOLD IS HERE WITH SOME HONORED GUESTS TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE CTE PROGRAM.

CINDY, COME ON UP.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. I HAVE A COUPLE OF PEOPLE TONIGHT THAT ARE GOING TO TALK TO YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW CTE INFLUENCED THEIR LIVES, AND FIRST UP IS EMMA TAYLOR, WHO WILL BE COMING UP AND TALK ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE WITH ASL AND WITH HER IS KIRI NIARCHOS TEACHER OF THE PROGRAM, AND EMMA WILL BE DEMONSTRATING HER SKILLS AS KIRI DOES THE VOICING FOR HER, AND THEN AFTER THAT, WE WILL HAVE OLIVER COME UP.

EMMA AND KIRI.

>> HELLO, MY NAME IS EMMA.

THANK YOU FOR INVITING ME HERE.

I'M HAPPY TO BE HERE AND SHOW OFF MY TEACHER.

[LAUGHTER] I WENT TO PHS TO 2018, AND I WAS IN THE ASL PROGRAM FOR FOUR YEARS AND I WAS VERY EXCITED TO STAY IN THE PROGRAM.

[01:10:01]

[LAUGHTER] I WAS ALWAYS OBSESSED WITH ASL.

I LOVED IT SINCE I WAS LITTLE.

I'VE ALWAYS LOVED THE LANGUAGE.

MY OLDER BROTHERS SIGNS TOO AND BOTH OF US BECAME INTERPRETERS.

MY BROTHER DECIDED TO GO A DIFFERENT PATH, BUT I ACTUALLY DECIDED TO BE AN INTERPRETER AND WENT THROUGH THAT.

I TESTED OUT IF THE CLARK COLLEGE PROGRAM BECAUSE I WAS TOO ADVANCED SO THEY COULDN'T HELP ME ANYMORE.

I HAD TO GO TO A DIFFERENT COLLEGE CLASSES BECAUSE THE PRAIRIE ASL PROGRAM WAS SO AWESOME THAT I ADVANCE OUT OF IT.

I WAS FLUENT IN TWO YEARS SO IT DIDN'T REALLY REQUIRE A LONG TIME.

I THINK IT SHOWS THE SKILLS OF OUR TEACHERS, THEIR ABILITY TO TEACH STUDENTS TO BECOME FLUENT THAT QUICKLY.

I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL OF THE KNOWLEDGE, THE SKILLS THAT MY TEACHERS GAVE ME.

WHEN I WENT TO THE COLLEGE I GRADUATED FROM, I GRADUATED THE TOP OF MY CLASS.

I HAD A 4.0 FROM THERE.

THERE WAS 25 STUDENTS THAT WENT INTO THE PROGRAM AND ONLY FOUR GRADUATED INCLUDING ME.

I GRADUATED TOP OF MY CLASS AND I THINK THE REASON I GRADUATED FROM TOP OF MY CLASS IS BECAUSE OF THE EDUCATION FOR PRAIRIE.

I'VE WATCHED OTHER STUDENTS COME IN AND THEY HAD VERY LITTLE KNOWLEDGE, VERY LIMITED.

BUT ANY STUDENT FROM PRAIRIE, WE WERE ALREADY WAY MORE ADVANCED THAN THAT.

THAT'S IT.

[APPLAUSE] [LAUGHTER]

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH, EMMA AND CURIE, AND I'D ALSO LIKE TO HAVE COME UP OLIVER CATO FROM A BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

>> GOOD EVENING LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

MY NAME IS OLIVER CATO.

I'M CURRENTLY STUDYING MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT WSU VANCOUVER, AND CTE CLASSES THAT I TOOK AT BATTLE GROUND OR WHILE ATTENDING BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL ARE ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS WHY I CHOSE TO PURSUE A CAREER IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.

THE CTE CLASSES THAT I TOOK INCLUDED WOOD DESIGN, BASIC WELDING, WEB DESIGN, ACCOUNTING, DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, 3D MODELING, AND WORK-BASED LEARNING.

ALL OF THESE CLASSES WERE EXTRAORDINARY AND I HAD A LOT OF FUN LEARNING NEW SKILLS THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO USE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

THE TWO CLASSES THOUGH THAT HAD THE GREATEST EFFECT ON MY CAREER DECISION, I'VE GOT TO BE 3D MODELING AND WORK-BASED LEARNING.

3D MODELING INTRODUCED ME TO THE WORLD OF COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT ENGINEERS USE EVERY DAY ON THE JOB TO DESIGN COMPLEX SYSTEMS AND PARTS, AND I QUICKLY FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS IDEA OF DESIGNING COMPLEX SYSTEMS WHILE GETTING PAID.

I BEGAN LOOKING INTO JOBS THAT WOULD ALLOW ME TO DO SO, AND SOON AFTER I WAS ABLE TO GET HIRED BY A LOCAL ENGINEERING FIRM.

ONCE I WAS HIRED I ENROLLED IN A WORK-BASED LEARNING COURSE AND WAS ABLE TO EARN CREDITS WHILE WORKING.

I GOT TO LOOK AT HANDS ON THE DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES OF WHAT AN ENGINEER DOES.

THE CHALLENGE OF COMING UP WITH NEW AND INNOVATIVE WAYS TO SOLVE A COMPLEX PROBLEM WAS AND STILL IS VERY SAS AND SATISFYING AND FUN TO ME.

I QUICKLY REALIZED THAT ENGINEERING WAS THE CAREER THAT I WANTED TO PURSUE.

I JUST WANT TO SAY I'M VERY THANKFUL FOR THE CTE PROGRAM AS IT INTRODUCED ME TO A CAREER THAT WILL ALLOW ME TO PROVIDE FOR A FAMILY WHILE ENJOYING THE WORK THAT I DO.

I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GOOD REST OF YOUR EVENING.

>> THANK YOU ALL. [APPLAUSE]

>> WE DON'T GET TO SEE THAT A LOT CINDY WHERE WE HAVE STUDENTS COME BACK AND TELL US THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS.

>> YOU'RE WELCOME. I HAD ONE MORE, BUT SHE WAS UNABLE TO MAKE IT TONIGHT.

CHELSEA, MY LUCAS, AND SHE'S A TEACHER AT DAYBREAK WHO WENT THROUGH OUR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM AND DECIDED TO GO INTO TEACHING SO SHE WAS UNABLE TO MAKE IT, BUT I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK OLIVER AND EMMA FOR BEING HERE AND CURIE FOR HELPING OUT TONIGHT.

I DID WANT TO GIVE THANK YOU, DANNY, THE OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO SEE SOME OF OUR STUDENTS

[01:15:03]

AND THAT CTE DOES AFFECT WHAT THEY DO IN THEIR FUTURE LIVES.

>> CINDY CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE GIFTS THAT WE RECEIVED HERE.

>> IN FRONT OF YOU TONIGHT ARE SOME FLOWERS FROM THE PRAIRIE FLORAL DEPARTMENT AND MARY SORENSON.

IT WAS ACTUALLY A JOINT EFFORT ALSO WITH A NET WEEKS, THE AGRICULTURE TEACHER AT PRAIRIE, AND SHE SAID THAT SHE HAD A DIFFICULT TIME GETTING SOME OF THE FLOWERS DUE TO THE SNOW DAYS, BUT THEY WERE STILL ABLE TO PUT THIS BOUQUET TOGETHER FOR YOU TONIGHT, AND THEN THE GLASS CAME FROM THE BATTLE GROUND, GLASS AND WOOD ART PROGRAM.

THERE IS A GLASS DISH THAT WAS CREATED AND THEN THE BATTLE GROUND LITTLE KEY CHAIN WAS DONE WITH THAT GLASS AND WHAT ART SHOP SO THOSE TWO PROGRAMS.

>> FANTASTIC.

>> THANK YOU.

>> WE'LL SEE YOU LATER.

>> THAT'S ALL FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING.

>> HUMAN RESOURCES.

MICHELLE AND STEPHANIE ARE ATTENDING AN HR.

>> YEAH, WASPA, WASHINGTON SCHOOL PROFESSIONALS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE.

>> THEY'RE THERE AND GETTING GOOD INFORMATION, SO NO REPORT FROM THEM.

FOR FINANCE, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO OUR CFO, MICHELLE SCOTT.

>> GETTING ME ONBOARD. I JUST HAVE A QUICK UPDATE ON TWO LEGISLATIVE BILLS THAT I'VE BEEN WATCHING CLOSELY.

THAT SECOND SUBSTITUTES SENATE BILL 5174, AND SUBSTITUTE HOUSE BILL 1248, AND BOTH OF THOSE ARE TRANSPORTATION FUNDING BILLS.

THERE WAS SOME SIGNIFICANT UPDATES TO 5174.

THEY HAVE DECIDED THAT THE FORMULAS STILL NEEDS TO BE UPDATED FOR TRANSPORTATION.

AGAIN, THESE ARE TO HAVE PREDICTABLE AND ADEQUATE FUNDING FOR TRANSPORTATION, AND I DECIDED THAT THEY STILL NEED MORE INFORMATION IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO ADEQUATELY MAKE A FORMULA THAT WORKS FOR EVERYBODY BECAUSE IT'S VERY COMPLICATED.

ESPECIALLY REGIONS SUCH AS OURSELVES THAT HAVE DIVERSE CHARACTERISTICS IN THE WAY THAT WE TRANSPORT STUDENTS AND ALL OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES AS OPPOSED TO OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS UPDATED ALSO IN 5174 FOR WAS THE ELIMINATION OF SOME OF THE LANGUAGE REGARDING SIGNIFICANT INCREASED TRANSPORTATION COSTS THAT ARE DISTRICT WOULD HAVE IMPLICATIONS FOR BATTLEGROUNDS SCHOOL DISTRICT AND SO I WOULD HAVE BEEN A QUITE CHALLENGING FOR OUR BUDGET.

THAT WAS ELIMINATED SO WE'RE REALLY THANKFUL FOR THAT BILL TO BE UPDATED IN THAT WAY.

I THINK THEY REALIZED THAT THAT WOULD COST A LOT OF MONEY FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS, SEATTLE AS A CONTRACTED SCHOOL DISTRICT, AS WELL AS BATTLE GROUND.

THE HOUSE BILL 1248 STILL HAS THAT LANGUAGE IN THERE, BUT WE WILL CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE FOR KEEPING THAT ANY CHANGES ARE FULLY FUNDED FOR SCHOOLS.

THAT'S WHAT WE ASK IS THAT IF THERE'S GOING TO BE CHANGES TO FORMULAS AND REQUIREMENTS OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT THEY'RE FULLY FUNDED.

JUST A LITTLE UPDATE ON THOSE TWO AND JUST LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT.

>> SORRY. THANK YOU, LISA.

ANOTHER THING THAT I WANTED TO DO IS I WANTED TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON ENROLLMENT.

THIS REPORT FOR YOU IS, AS YOU KNOW, ENROLLMENT DRIVES MOST OF OUR FUNDING.

SO IT'S IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO SEE WHERE WE'RE AT WITH ENROLLMENT.

THE FIRST SLIDE IS REALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT SLIDE.

THIS IS OUR OVERALL FTE FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, SO THAT'S FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT.

SO THAT IS NOT THE THE HEAD COUNT OF STUDENTS, THAT IS JUST THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT THEY ACTUALLY SPEND IN OUR SCHOOLS BEING SERVED.

WE HAVE HAD A LITTLE BIT OF A DIP DOWN.

YOU CAN SEE THAT WE HAVE 11,891.41,

[01:20:02]

BUT WE'RE STILL WELL ABOVE OUR BUDGETED FTE FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

SO WE'RE STILL THANKFUL THAT WE'RE ABOVE BUDGET, AND THAT SCENE THAT COME DOWN A LITTLE BIT HAPPENS AFTER WHEN SECOND SEMESTER STARTS.

I DID DO A LITTLE RESEARCH ON THE REDUCTION.

YOU CAN SEE IT HAPPENING WITH STUDENTS MOVING OUT OF THE AREA.

SO THERE'S A LOT OF STUDENTS MOVING OUT OF THE AREA AND ALSO STUDENTS THAT MAY HAVE DECIDED NOT TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.

NOT VERY MANY OF THOSE, BUT MOSTLY TRANSFERS OUT OF STATE OR OUT OF BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT IS THE MAJORITY.

SO WE DID GET THERE. SORRY ABOUT THAT.

THIS IS THE HEAD COUNT, THE STUDENTS, AND WE HAVE 12,197 ON OUR FEBRUARY COUNT.

THIS IS OUR ALE PROGRAMS, AND YOU CAN SEE THOSE ARE INCREASING AND THEY ARE FOLLOWING A SIMILAR TREND THAT THEY HAVE IN THE PAST BEFORE.

SO THAT IS 1,690.48 FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT ALE STUDENTS.

THEN OUR HIGH-SCHOOL CTE PROGRAM HAS DROPPED DOWN A LITTLE BIT, IT DOES HAVE THAT DIP DOWN A LITTLE BIT.

SO THAT'S A NORMAL TREND THERE.

WE DID HAVE AN INCREASE IN OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS CTE, AND THAT WAS, DAYBREAK PROGRAM WAS ADDED.

SO THAT INCREASE THE FTE STARTING IN FEBRUARY.

AND THEN OUR ALE HIGH-SCHOOL CTE, AGAIN, JUST A LITTLE BIT OF A DIP DOWN ON THAT ONE TO 76.5.

AND OUR SPECIAL ED CONTINUES TO GROW AS STUDENTS ARE IDENTIFIED FOR PROGRAM, AND WE AGAIN ARE ABOVE BUDGET ON THAT PROGRAM AS WELL, WE'RE UP ABOUT 50 STUDENTS ON AVERAGE.

THEN YOU'VE SEEN THIS SLIDE SEVERAL TIMES NOW ON OUR TRANSITIONAL BILINGUAL PROGRAM, IT CONTINUES TO GROW.

WE'RE NOW AT 1,257 STUDENTS BEING SERVED IN OUR TRANSITIONAL BILINGUAL PROGRAM AND THAT'S JUST AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF STUDENTS THAT ARE BEING SERVED IN THAT PROGRAM.

THEN RUNNING START CONTINUES TO STILL BE LOW.

WE JUST DON'T HAVE AS MANY STUDENTS THAT ARE ATTENDING THE RUNNING START PROGRAMS. SO YOU CAN SEE THAT WE HAVE 262.32 FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT AS WELL IN RUNNING START, AND THAT'S ALL I HAD.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

>> HOW ARE THE REDUCTIONS IN LIKE RUNNING START COMPARATIVELY LIKE OUR OVERALL DIP IN, WHAT DO I WANT TO SAY, SO OVERALL, OUR ENROLLMENTS DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT, AND RUNNING STARTS DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT.

WHAT IS THE RATIO? IS IT SIMILAR? LIKE ARE THEY PARALLELING TOGETHER, THE DIPS OR ARE YOU SEEING?

>> WELL, I HAVEN'T DONE ANY CALCULATIONS ON IT, BUT IT DOES APPEAR TO BE SIMILAR TO WHEN STUDENTS ARE LEAVING TO MOVE OUT OF THE DISTRICT.

THEY'RE NO LONGER IN THE RUNNING START PROGRAM.

SO THEN ALSO WE DON'T HAVE THAT ENROLLMENT AS WELL TOO.

SO I THINK THAT IT TRENDS SIMILARLY.

>> IT IS INTERESTING THOUGH THAT FOR RUNNING START TO SEE WHERE OUR NUMBERS WERE AT ONE POINT TO WHERE THEY ARE NOW.

>> YEAH, THAT'S REALLY INTERESTING TO SEE.

>> AND I DON'T KNOW WHY THAT, DO YOU HAVE ANY INSIGHT INTO WHY [OVERLAPPING]

>> I WAS GOING TO ASK THAT, IS THERE A REASON?

>> IN THE PAST WE HAD A LOT MORE RUNNING START STUDENTS AND NOW WE DON'T? IS IT BECAUSE THEY'RE JUST ENJOYING SCHOOL HERE MORE OR?

>> THAT'S WHAT I WAS THINKING BECAUSE I KNOW WE OPENED UP A LOT OF CLASSES, AND I KNOW AT LEAST FROM A SENIOR PERSPECTIVE,

[01:25:04]

A LOT OF THE CLASSES THAT WE HAVE, AT LEAST PRAIRIE, [LAUGHTER] ARE REALLY INTERESTING FOR STUDENTS AND STUDENTS GET REALLY INVOLVED.

>> WELL, I'VE HEARD OF A LOT OF STUDENTS DOING A YEAR OF RUNNING START, SAY THEIR JUNIOR YEAR AND THEN JUST DECIDING TO STAY AT THE SCHOOL FOR THEIR SENIOR YEAR BECAUSE OF RIGOR OR JUST THE DESIRE [OVERLAPPING] TO BE AROUND OTHER STUDENTS.

SO I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S IT OR I DON'T KNOW IF THERE'S BEEN AS MUCH ADVERTISING OF THE RUNNING START PROGRAM BECAUSE AS WE'RE DOING OUR FORECASTING AND STUFF, THERE WAS JUST AN OPTION FOR RUNNING START ON THE FORECASTING SHEET RATHER THAN A BUNCH OF PRESENTATIONS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY.

BUT I WASN'T REALLY LOOKING INTO IT BECAUSE THAT'S NOT MY LENS. I'M NOT REALLY SURE.

>> A WHILE BACK, I HEARD THAT ONE OF THE REASONS RUNNING START HAD DIP SO MUCH WAS BECAUSE THERE'S STILL A GOOD PERCENTAGE OF THEIR CLASSES THAT ARE ONLINE, AND THERE WEREN'T FACE TO FACE AND SO AFTER COMING OUT OF THE PANDEMIC, THAT'S NOT WHAT THEY WERE LOOKING FOR.

THEY WANTED CLASSES AND PEOPLE TO CONNECT WITH.

SO I WAS JUST CURIOUS IF THAT'S STILL THE CASE WHERE THE LARGE MAJORITY OF CLASSES AT CLARK.

>> DOES THIS INCLUDE STUDENTS WHO ARE DOING A MIX OF RUNNING START AND ALSO JUST HIGH SCHOOL?

>> YES.

>> I THINK IT'S INTERESTING THAT OUR HIGH-SCHOOL CTE PROGRAM IS WAY UP HIGH.

SO PERHAPS OUR STUDENTS ARE CHOOSING DIFFERENT CAREER PATHS.

SO I THINK THERE'S A CORRELATION THAT COULD BE FOUND IN THAT SLIDE.

>> MAYBE THAT'S WHAT CTE IS KEEPING ALL THOSE STUDENTS AROUND.

NEXT TOPIC CINDY. [LAUGHTER] WE ARE GOING TO GO WITH THAT.

[LAUGHTER]

>> THERE ARE SOME OTHER HEAD COUNTS AND RECAPS THAT ARE IN THE BACK THAT YOU CAN LOOK AT AT YOUR LEISURE, SO THAT'S ALL I HAD.

>> THANK YOU. KEVIN IS NOT HERE WITH US TONIGHT, SO WE WILL HAVE NO FACILITIES.

I DO WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT AS WE MOVE PAST FACILITIES AND OPERATIONS.

WHEN WE GET SNOW DAYS SOME OF US CAN CELEBRATE LIKE, TODAY OFF, IT'S SNOW DAY, LET'S GO PLAY.

[LAUGHTER] FOR OUR MAINTENANCE AND FACILITIES AND OUR JANITORS AND OUR CUSTODIANS AND ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE, THESE ARE TOUGH DAYS FOR THEM.

CLEARING OUT PARKING LOTS AND SNOW AND MAKING SURE OUR SCHOOLS ARE SAFE AND WE CAN GET PEOPLE ON.

KEVIN HAS BEEN WORKING ALL WEEKEND.

WHEN HE ASKED, I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING ON THE AGENDA, CAN I SKIP TONIGHT'S MEETING? I WAS LIKE, YEAH, GO HOME, GET SOME REST.

I DO APPRECIATE THEM TREMENDOUSLY.

THAT LEAVES US TO COMMUNICATIONS AND AMANDA.

>> GOOD EVENING. I WANTED TO SHARE A COUPLE OF HIGHLIGHTS FROM SCHOOLS AROUND THE DISTRICT.

ONE OR TWO OF THESE THINGS HAVE BEEN MENTIONED ALREADY BEAUTIFULLY BY OUR STUDENTS, SO I'LL JUST TOUCH ON THEM QUICKLY.

BUT STARTING WITH AMBOY MIDDLE SCHOOL, YOU SEE THAT PICTURE ON THE LEFT, STUDENTS WERE REWARDED FOR MEETING THEIR BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS.

THEY GOT TO PLAY A HUMAN GAME OF MINEFIELD USING PINECONES AND BUBBLE WRAP.

THIS EVENT WAS BOTH A REWARD AND A LESSON AND WORKING TOGETHER TO SOLVE A PROBLEM.

ON THE RIGHT, THERE ARE THREE STUDENTS FROM LAURIN WHO BROUGHT HOME RUBENS FROM THE ROAST CITY CLASSIC ART SHOW.

THIS YEAR'S THEME WAS MY DOG, MY BEST FRIEND AND THEY PRODUCED SOME PRETTY AMAZING PIECES, AND THEIR WORK WAS DISPLAYED AT THE PORTLAND EXPO CENTER.

THE NEXT PRAIRIE.

ON THE LEFT IS THE SCHOOL'S BLACK INDIGENOUS AND PEOPLE OF COLOR CLUB, WHICH HAS BEEN DOING SOME GREAT WORK TO BRING STUDENTS TOGETHER AND ENHANCE UNITY.

YOU CAN READ A REALLY GOOD STORY ON OUR WEBSITE ABOUT THAT CLUB, AS WELL AS HOW SCHOOLS AROUND THE DISTRICT RECOGNIZED BLACK HISTORY MONTH, AND ON THE RIGHT, XANADU, A COURSE AND I WANT TO JUST COMMEND THE CAST, CREW AND DIRECTOR FOR HAVING THE SHOW GO ON, EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE SOME UNCERTAINTY ABOUT WHETHER THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO FINISH OUT THE RUN DUE TO WEATHER.

THEY WERE ABLE TO NOT ONLY FINISH, BUT RECEIVE SOME GREAT FEEDBACK ON THE SHOW.

WELL DONE. THEN NEXT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

ON THE LEFT IS THE SCHOOL'S MARKSMANSHIP TEAM, WHICH FINISHED FIRST IN THE WESTERN REGION FINALS EARLIER THIS MONTH, AND THEY HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT.

YOU SEE IN THE MIDDLE THERE THAT KGW CAME OUT TO DO A STORY ON THE TEAM AND WE BELIEVE THAT WILL AIR TONIGHT SO WATCH FOR THAT.

ON THE RIGHT IS THE SCHOOL'S WELDING FABRICATION TEAM, WHICH TOOK HOME SECOND PLACE AT THE SKILLSUSA SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON REGIONAL EVENT EARLIER THIS MONTH.

THEN LASTLY, SOME OF THE FUN,

[01:30:01]

100TH DAY OF SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS WERE HELD EARLIER THIS MONTH.

SCHOOLS CELEBRATED IN DIFFERENT WAYS.

SOME DRESSED UP AS 100-YEAR OLDS.

OTHERS DECORATED THEIR CLOTHING WITH 100 DOTS OR STICKERS.

ON THE LEFT IS A CLASS AND THEY'RE WEARING THOSE CROWNS THAT SAY, 100 DAYS SMARTER.

THEN ON THE RIGHT IS A PICTURE FROM CAPTAIN, AND THEY TOOK A DIFFERENT APPROACH.

THE FOURTH-GRADER CELEBRATED BEING 80 DAYS AWAY FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND THEY HAD 80 SNACKS, THEY LISTENED TO '80S MUSIC AND THEY LEARNED ABOUT DIFFERENT VOCABULARY AND TECHNOLOGY.

[LAUGHTER] ANY QUESTIONS?

>> AMANDA, THANKS FOR HIGHLIGHTING THESE. THIS IS FUN.

YEAH. SO A LOT OF GOOD NEWS.

>> I LOVE IT.

>> IT'S ALL YOURS.

>> THAT BRINGS US TO CITIZENS COMMENTS.

[8. Citizens' Comments]

I'M GOING TO READ THE PROTOCOL FOR CITIZENS COMMENTS JUST SO WE'RE ON THE SAME PAGE.

WITH THAT, WE'LL GET STARTED.

WE DO HAVE A TIMER AND RICARDO OUR STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE WILL HOLD UP FLYERS WHEN YOUR TIME IS CLOSE.

OUR FIRST SPEAKER, CITIZEN COMMENT IS FROM WEIN GLEN.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US THIS EVENING.

>> HI, MY NAME IS WINGERS HITCH AND I HAVE A FEW COMMENTS ON SOMETHING THAT YOU HAD SAID ABOUT THAT YOUNG BOY THAT WAS ASKING YOU, HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE WANTS TO BE.

MIKE ROWE WHO DID THE FILM DIRTY JOBS.

REMEMBER HIS TV SHOW?

>> YEAH.

>> HE HAD A WHOLE PROGRAM FOR 30 MINUTES AND HE WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW THERE'S SO MANY TRADE SCHOOL JOBS.

THERE'S 8,800,000 TRADE SCHOOL JOBS, AND HE SAID YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE FOR IT.

PLUS THE FACT MANY OF THEM HAVE.

THEY TEACH YOU AS AN APPRENTICE AND THEY PAY YOU.

HE SAID YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO GET OUT OF SCHOOL AND BE IN DEBT WHEN YOU GO TO COLLEGE, AND THIS IS SOMETHING YOU GUYS SHOULD CHECK IT OUT BECAUSE YOU CAN LOOK THEM UP.

MIKE ROWE DIRTY JOBS.

HE ALSO GIVES SCHOLARSHIPS TOO.

THERE'S DIFFERENT WAYS OF DOING STUFF, AND HE SAID NOBODY SHOULD BE GETTING OUT OF COLLEGE AND BE TOTALLY IN DEBT, AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU SHOULD ADVISE THAT YOUNG MAN.

HE SAID THE THING ABOUT GOING TO COLLEGE, IT'S NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO BE.

HE SAID YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE FUTURE JOBS BECAUSE THEY'RE ELIMINATING A LOT OF JOBS WITH AI.

IF THEY HAVE ROBOTS TO DO THINGS AND STUFF, THEY DON'T NEED YOU, AND YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE JOBS ARE, AND HE SAYS JUST ONE THING A LOT OF THE SCHOOLS HAVE DONE IS GOTTEN RID OF SHOP CLASSES AND THINGS LIKE THAT WHEN THERE'S LOTS OF CONSTRUCTION JOBS AND THINGS IN ELECTRICITY AND ALL THINGS.

BUT THAT'S SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO.

NOW SINCE YOU GUYS GOT ALL THIS MONEY COMING IN FROM YOUR LAWSUIT, THERE'S A COUPLE OF BOOKS THAT I HONESTLY THINK THAT YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT.

THIS IS A VIDEO, AND SINCE IT'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH, I THINK IT'S VERY IMPORTANT.

THIS IS ABOUT BEN CARSON.

BEN CARSON WAS A POOR BLACK KID WITH A SINGLE MOM, AND SHE TOLD HER BOYS HE WAS FLUNKING OUT OF SCHOOL AND HE TOLD TURN OFF THE TV.

WHAT HE DID WAS HE TURNED OFF THE TV AND SHE SAID SHE WANTED HIM TO READ A BOOK AND WRITE A BOOK REPORT EVERY WEEK.

THIS WOMAN COULDN'T EVEN READ. THAT WAS HIS MOM.

BOTH HER SONS BECAUSE THEY FOUND THE JOY OF READING AND WHAT THEY LEARNED FROM IT.

ONE WAS HE SEPARATED CONJOINED TWINS.

HE RAN FOR PRESIDENT AND HIS BROTHER WAS AN ENGINEER,

[01:35:04]

AND THIS IS ALL BECAUSE THEY TURNED THE TV OFF.

THIS THING IS PROBABLY A GREAT ONE TO SHOW FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH.

YOUR WHOLE SCHOOL SHOULD WATCH IT BECAUSE IT TEACHES YOU READING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO.

THE OTHER TWO BOOKS, THIS ONE HERE IS DEADLY FEASTS BY RICHARD RHODES AND THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT THE CANNIBAL DISEASE.

THEY USED TO CALL IT KURU AND THEN CREUTZFELDT-JAKOB DISEASE, AND THEN IT'S PRIONS.

WELL, WHAT DO WE HAVE IN OUR VACCINES? SPIKED PRIONS.

WHEN YOU SEE THE HISTORY OF THIS, HOW THEY WENT TO NEW GUINEA AND THE FOUR INDIANS WERE CANNIBALS, AND THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN HAD THIS KURU AND THEY WERE SHAKEN AND THEY ENDED UP DYING AND EATEN IN THE BRAIN.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING WITH THIS COVID VACCINE, AND I'LL TELL YOU SOMETHING, CHECK OUT ALL THE PAPERS THAT I PUT ON.

I PUT ALL THE INGREDIENTS OF THE SCHOOL SHOTS BECAUSE WHEN THEY PUT FORMALDEHYDE, THEY PUT ALL KINDS OF STUFF.

I THINK I GOT TO GO.

BUT I'M GOING TO PUT ALL THIS ON PUBLIC RECORD, AND THE OTHER BOOK IS THIS ONE, BEHOLD A PALE HORSE BY WILLIAM COOPER.

BECAUSE THESE THREE THINGS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THESE KIDS CAN LEARN HERE.

WHAT I'M PUTTING ON PUBLIC RECORD, ALL OF YOU CHECK IT OUT, AND YOU CAN USE THESE THINGS FOR YOUR TERM PAPERS TOO. VERY IMPORTANT.

>> THANK YOU.

>> WHO DO I GIVE THIS TO?

>> [OVERLAPPING] YOU GIVE IT RIGHT HERE TO LISA.

>> OKAY. I JUST WANT TO KEEP THESE TWO.

THIS IS THE INGREDIENTS OF ALL THE SHOTS.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> OUR NEXT CITIZEN IS JESSICA COLE.

>> HELLO BOARD. MY NAME IS JESSICA COLE.

MY PRONOUNS ARE SHE, HER AND THIS IS ONE OF FIVE PROGENY SIMON PRONOUNS, THEY, THEM.

I WANT TO SAY TONIGHT, THANK YOU SO MUCH, ROB AND YOU'RE GOING TO BE GREATLY MISSED.

I WAS HERE WHEN YOU WERE SWORN IN FOUR YEARS AGO.

I HAD JUST STARTED RECENTLY BEFORE YOU STARTED COMING TO THE BOARD MEETINGS REGULARLY AND I'VE GOTTEN TO KNOW YOU AND WORK WITH YOU AND WHEN I THINK OF YOU, I THINK OF YOUR KINDNESS.

WE'VE TALKED A LOT. I FEEL LIKE, BUT THERE'S SO MUCH THAT WE HAVEN'T TALKED ABOUT, SO I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHERE WE HAVE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES ALL THE TIME.

BUT I KNOW THAT AS A CITIZEN, WHEN I AS A PARENT AND THE DISTRICT, I COULD COME TO YOU AND I KNOW KINDNESS WOULD COME FROM YOU NO MATTER WHERE WE DEFERRED OR AGREED I WATCHED A LITTLE BIT OF THE INTERVIEWS AND IN MY OPINION, THAT'S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITIES OF A BOARD MEMBER AND YOU REALLY IMPACTED MY FAMILY POSITIVELY.

YOU'VE IMPACTED SIMON AND I JUST REALLY APPRECIATE YOU, AND THEY HELPED ME PICK OUT A CARD FOR YOU, AND YOU WILL BE TRULY MISSED, AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THAT YOU'VE DONE FOR OUR DISTRICT AND MY FAMILY PERSONALLY. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> ALL RIGHT, BEFORE WE CLOSE CITIZENS COMMENTS? IS THERE ANYONE THAT WE MISSED IN THE AUDIENCE WHO DIDN'T GET A SIGN-UP.

ALL RIGHT. MOVING FORWARD, WE WILL MOVE ON TO OUR CONSENT AGENDA.

[9. Consent Agenda (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]

WE HAVE ITEMS A-G, APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA, APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM THE FEBRUARY 13TH REGULAR MEETING, THE APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM THE FEBRUARY 21ST SPECIAL MEETING.

WE HAVE OUR PERSONNEL REPORTS, STUDENT TRAVEL, APPROVAL OF A DONATION FROM THE TIGER FOOTBALL BOOSTERS CLUB, APPROVAL OF A DONATION FOR THEM, BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS.

BEFORE WE MOVE TO A MOTION, IS THERE ANY ITEMS ON THIS AGENDA THAT NEED TO BE REMOVED OR ANY THAT NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED OR MORE INFORMATION AND MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.

[01:40:01]

BEFORE WE TAKE THAT WE WILL TAKE A AN ADVISORY VOTE FROM OUR STUDENTS AS PART OF OUR NEW POLICY.

STUDENTS, WOULD YOU OFFER AND YAY OR NAY OR NO.

I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT I'M SAYING. [LAUGHTER] THAT WAS IT. THANK YOU.

>> YAY.

>> YAY.

>> ALL RIGHT. WITH THAT, WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR TOO FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.

WE HAVE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM OUR STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS AS APPROVALS, SUPPORTING THE APPROVAL OF THIS.

ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? SLIGHTLY AWKWARD.

IT WILL GET EASIER AS WE HAVE [LAUGHTER] SORRY.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY AYE.

>> AYE. [OVERLAPPING]

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED.

MOTION PASSES FIVE TO ZERO.

>> WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A MOMENT ON THE CONSENT AGENDA THAT WAS JUST APPROVED TO TWO LARGE DONATIONS.

ONE FROM THE TIGER FOOTBALL BOOSTERS CLUB THAT ENABLES THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM TO PURCHASE NEW UNIFORMS FOR THE FOOTBALL TEAM.

I WANT TO THANK THE BOOSTERS FOR THAT AND THEN THE SECOND FROM THE BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS, THE JAZZ BAND HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN A VERY PRESTIGIOUS THAT KANSAS CITY JAZZ FESTIVAL AND THIS DONATION FROM THE BATTLE GROUND HIGH-SCHOOL BOOSTERS CLUB WILL ENABLE THEM TO SUPPORT TAKING 24 STUDENTS TO KANSAS CITY AND THE TIMING OF THIS IS CRITICAL.

THANK YOU THE BOARD FOR GETTING THIS THROUGH BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO PURCHASE AIRLINE TICKETS AND DO ALL THOSE THINGS IN THE NEXT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

AGAIN, THANK YOU TO THE BOTH BOOSTER CLUBS, THAT FOOTBALL BOOSTER CLUB AND THE BAND BOOSTER CLUB. MUCH APPRECIATED.

>> THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT,

[10. Old Business (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]

MOVING ON TO OLD BUSINESS.

FROM THERE WE HAVE THE SECOND READING AND ADOPTION OF AMERICAN STREET AND MULTICULTURAL AND PSYCHOLOGY OF STORIES.

>> GOOD EVENING BOARD. I'M GOING TO INVITE ANNIE ODOR AND HEATHER SMITH LINE TO COME UP.

YOU WILL REMEMBER THAT ANNIE WASN'T AVAILABLE LAST TIME AND YOU CAN SEE TODAY, SHE WAS NOT AVAILABLE LAST TIME.

WE WANTED TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS THE CONCERNS THAT WERE BROUGHT UP DURING THE LAST MEETING.

ANNIE AND HEATHER ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THOSE.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS ALSO BROUGHT UP AS A QUESTION, WHAT WAS THE COST OF THE BOOKS? I WOULD VERY SPECIFICALLY WANTED TO ADDRESS THAT COMPONENT.

THERE'S A PAPERBACK COPY OF THE BOOK FOR $13.95 A PIECE, OR A HARDCOVER BOOK FOR 29.95.

WE CAN PURCHASE 60 BUCKS FOR A LITTLE OVER $1,100 WOULD BE THE COST OF THE TEXTS FOR THIS CLASS, AND THERE FROM THERE, I DON'T KNOW WHICH ONE TO GO FIRST.

>> HELLO. WHAT I DID AFTER WE LEFT HERE, THE LAST TIME WAS TO GO BACK THROUGH THE VIDEO AND JUST RECORD THE DIFFERENT QUESTIONS THAT TED THAT YOU HAD AND MARY THAT YOU HAD, AND I WENT AND DID A LITTLE RESEARCH AND TALK TO OTHER PEOPLE WHO TEACH AT OUR SCHOOL JUST SO I CAN MAKE SURE THAT I WAS STRAIGHT ON THE BACKGROUND.

I KNOW I TALKED ABOUT SOME OF THE TEXTS BEFORE AND I THOUGHT I BETTER MAKE SURE THAT THAT'S RIGHT.

THESE TEXTS AND OTHER CLASSES.

I JUST PUT TOGETHER REALLY QUICKLY THE QUESTIONS THAT YOU HAD AND THEN ANSWERS THAT I FOUND OR EVERY WORDING OF ANSWERS THAT I GAVE, AND THEN WE NOTICED THAT THE MOST PRESSING QUESTION OR THE QUESTION THAT I FELT LIKE I DIDN'T GIVE A GOOD ENOUGH ANSWER TO WAS THE QUESTION OF CURRICULUM AND WHAT WOULD A UNIT LOOK LIKE? ANNIE AND I PUT TOGETHER A UNIT THAT SHE'LL PRESENT TO YOU JUST TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE SAMPLING OF WHAT WE WOULD DO WITH THESE STORIES, THEN I WILL FINISH IT UP.

JUST REALLY QUICKLY, ONE OF THE QUESTIONS WAS ABOUT COST AND ALISON WENT OVER THAT.

THEN THERE WAS THE QUESTION OF IS THIS THE ONLY BOOK THAT YOU'LL BE DRAWING SOURCES FROM? WE TALKED ABOUT USING THIS AS A CORE CURRICULUM THAT'S ADOPTED, AND THEN WE WOULD PULL THEMATICALLY RELATED MATERIALS TO USE A SUPPLEMENTAL TEXTS.

I WENT OVER A PLAN FOR THIS CIRCUIT AND THEN ANNIE WE'LL GO OVER A PLAN FOR THREE OF THE OTHER TEXTS THAT WE HAVE.

WE HAVE A SUPPLEMENTAL CONTRACT SO THAT WE'LL GO OVER THESE AND FIGURE OUT THE REST OF IT OVER THIS SUMMER.

BECAUSE IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME TO BUILD GOOD LESSONS, AND BOTH OF US ARE TEACHING FULL-TIME RIGHT NOW.

THAT PART OF IT ISN'T DONE YET.

PURCHASE COST IS THERE.

WE TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE TEACHER'S GUIDE THAT WE MIGHT PULL

[01:45:02]

THE UNITS TOGETHER OR THE GROUPINGS OF BOOKS TOGETHER FROM THE TEACHER'S GUIDE, BUT THAT THE CURRICULUM WOULD BE BUILT BY US.

THERE WAS SOME CONCERN ABOUT USING A LITERATURE ANTHOLOGY AS A TEXTBOOK, AND I WANTED TO REITERATE THAT IN A LITERATURE CLASS, THE LITERATURE IS ALWAYS THE CORE, LIKE THE STORIES THAT WE READ IN LITERATURE CLASSES ARE ALWAYS THE CORE.

GOOD TEACHERS ADJUST THE TEACHING OF THAT GOOD LITERATURE BASED ON THE SKILL LEVEL, INTERESTS, AND NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS WHO ARE IN FRONT OF THEM ON ANY GIVEN DAY.

WE MAKE SURE THAT OUR TEACHING ADDRESSES THE CURRENT STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS OF THE STATE AND THE DISTRICT.

WE'RE PROFESSIONALS AND WE'RE EXPERTS IN OUR FIELDS, SO WE'RE TRUSTED TO DO THESE ADJUSTMENTS.

LIKE EVERY DAY, EVERY TEACHER IN EVERY CLASS.

WE TAKE OUR CORE THAT WE HAVE AND THEN WE MAKE SURE THAT WE DO WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO ADDRESS THE KIDS IN FRONT OF US.

RIGHT NOW, THIS IS THE RESEARCH THAT I WENT AND TALKED TO PEOPLE AT PRAIRIE AND PEOPLE AT BATTLE GROUND, JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT I WASN'T WRONG ABOUT THIS NOT BEING AN OUTLIER.

THAT REALLY WE HAVE LOTS OF CLASSES THAT HAVE SIMILAR TEXTS.

RIGHT NOW THERE ARE SEVERAL CLASSES THAT ARE TAUGHT WITHOUT THE USE OF A TRADITIONAL TEXTBOOK OR WITH SIGNIFICANT TEACHER MODIFICATIONS.

A POETRY CLASS OR FILM LITERATURE CLASS, CREATIVE WRITING.

CRIME IN SOCIETY IS ONE THAT STEPHANIE ETHYLENE BUILT FROM SCRATCH AND SHE IS REMARKABLE.

THAT'S A GREAT CLASS. US HISTORY THROUGH BASEBALL HAS A TEXT THAT IS REALLY SIMILAR TO THIS ONE.

IT'S ONE OF THOSE NIGHTSTAND BOOKS THAT PEOPLE READ, AND ADAM HORNE HAS BUILT HIS CLASS OUT OF THAT WITH LESSONS JUST BASED ON THAT CORE BOOK.

WE ALSO HAVE SEVERAL CLASSES THAT USE TEXTBOOKS THAT HAVE TO BE HEAVILY SUPPLEMENTED OR ALTERED, LIKE PSYCH USES THE AP PSYCH BOOK NOW, HONORS BIOLOGY USES A COLLEGE TEXTS ON TOP OF THE REGULAR BIO-TEXT, MICROBIOLOGY AND ZOOLOGY, BOTH ARE TAUGHT WITH TEACHER CREATED RESOURCES EXCLUSIVELY.

THIS ISN'T AN OUTLIER, LIKE IT'S A, IT'S A THING THAT TEACHERS DO ALL THE TIME IS TO BUILD CURRICULUM BASED ON THE CORE.

THERE WAS ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT THE ANTAGONISTS BEING WHITE PEOPLE IN A LOT OF THE STORIES, OR HERE'S THE ACTUAL WORDS OR IF THE ANTAGONIST IS NOT A SYSTEM OR INSTITUTION, IT'S A WHITE PERSON.

I WENT THROUGH EVERY SINGLE STORY AND FOUND ONE STORY WITH A WHITE PERSON AS AN ANTAGONIST AT A 20, WHICH IS NOT VERY MANY.

A COUPLE OF THOSE STORIES DO HAVE SYSTEMS THAT FUNCTION IS THE ANTAGONISTS.

BUT MOST OF THE TENSIONS IN THE STORIES ARE AMONG MEMBERS OF THE SAME FAMILIES.

THERE ARE OCCASIONAL RACIST INCIDENTS THAT HAPPENED IN SOME OF THE STORIES.

THERE ARE ALSO VERY HEROIC, HELPFUL, SMART, AND POSITIVE WHITE CHARACTERS.

THE NEXT CONCERN WAS THAT THE LIST OF AUTHORS DOESN'T REFLECT THE ETHNIC MAKEUP OF OUR STUDENT BODY.

BECAUSE 83 PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS, AT LEAST AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL ARE WHITE. THIS IS TRUE.

IT INTENTIONALLY INCLUDES A MYRIAD OF VOICES FROM VARYING ETHNIC, CULTURAL, RELIGIOUS, SOCIOECONOMIC, REGIONAL, AND SOCIAL GROUPS FOR THE PURPOSE OF CREATING A DIVERSITY OF PERSPECTIVES, AND NARRATIVES.

THAT WAS DONE INTENTIONALLY.

IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WE KNEW AND WE'RE OKAY WITH THAT.

THAT WAS THE POINT OF THE CLASS.

MARY BROUGHT UP A CONCERN ABOUT STEREOTYPING IN THE STORIES.

IN PARTICULAR, THE WHITE SUPREMACISTS IN IDAHO, I WENT BACK AND DID MY RESEARCH TO MAKE SURE THAT I WAS RIGHT.

I LEARNED THAT THE ARYAN NATION IS NOT CENTERED IN QUARTER LIN ANYMORE.

THANK YOU FOR SENDING ME OUT TO LEARN THAT.

I AM GLAD THAT I LEARNED IT.

THE STORY WHERE THAT ONE-LINER TAKES PLACE, AND IT'S A THING THAT I CERTAINLY WOULD BRING UP WITH STUDENTS WHEN THAT ONE-LINER COMES UP.

THE STORY WHERE IT TAKES PLACE, IT TAKES PLACE IN THE EARLY 2000S WHEN ARYAN NATION THE NATION WAS IN THE NEWS ALL THE TIME, AND THEY WERE HEADQUARTERED IN HAYDEN LAKE.

IT MAKES SENSE THAT THAT PARTICULAR CHARACTER IN THAT PARTICULAR STORY WOULD MAKE THAT REFERENCE.

BUT IT CERTAINLY IS WORTH TALKING ABOUT WITH STUDENTS NOW ABOUT HOW THAT'S CHANGED SINCE THE EARLY 2000S.

YOU ALSO BROUGHT UP AND I DON'T KNOW IF I QUITE UNDERSTOOD IT, BUT CORRECT ME IF I'M GOING THE WRONG DIRECTION WITH THIS.

BUT THE STEREOTYPING OF POVERTY OR THAT POVERTY WAS AN ISSUE IN THE BOOK.

>> NO. LET ME CLARIFY.

I THINK THAT THAT IS, I DIDN'T BRING THAT UP AS A STEREOTYPE, I BROUGHT THAT UP AS AN UNDERLYING THEME IN THE BOOK.

>> FOR SURE.

>> IN MANY OF THE STORIES, WHICH I KNOW YOU WILL POINT OUT.

>> GOT YOU.

>> THAT IT ISN'T NECESSARILY ATTACHED TO ANY PARTICULAR ETHNIC GROUP.

THE POVERTY RUNS THE GAMUT, IN ETHNIC GROUPS.

I THINK YOU UNDERSTOOD, BUT MAYBE JUST MISS UNDERSTOOD.

>> WELL, AND I THINK THAT YOU AND I ARE ON THE SAME PAGE WITH THAT, BUT IT DESTIGMATIZES POVERTY.

BUT IT IS NICE THAT IT TALKS ABOUT IT.

>> I BROUGHT IT UP AS A POSITIVE THING.

[LAUGHTER]

>> MY HEAD WAS REALLY [OVERLAPPING].

THANK YOU FOR CLARIFYING THAT.

BEFORE I COME BACK TO DO A LITTLE JUST FINAL DEAL,

[01:50:02]

ANNY IS GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE UNIT THAT WE GOT TOGETHER AND I'M JUST GOING TO PASS THIS OUT TO YOU ALL SO YOU CAN LOOK AT IT WHILE SHE'S TALKING ABOUT IT.

>> GOOD TO SEE YOU, ANNY.

>> THANK YOU. HELLO. I'M SORRY FOR MY ABSENCE.

WE'RE ALL GOOD. NO SURGERY NEEDED.

WE CAME TOGETHER AND WE DID TAKE SOME GROUPINGS OF SHORT STORIES FROM THE TEACHER GUIDE WHERE THEY HAVE GROUPED SHORT STORIES TOGETHER BASED ON THE TOPIC OF WORK, AND WE PUT TOGETHER A UNIT THAT IS FOCUSING ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND WORK, MAINLY BECAUSE THIS IS A SENIOR ELECTIVE CLASS.

WHEN WE TEACH SENIOR ELECTIVE ENGLISH CLASSES, WE STILL WANT TO TEACH LITERATURE, BUT WE'RE ALSO GUIDING THEMES TOWARD WHAT HAPPENS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL.

WHAT QUESTIONS ARE YOU HAVING AND USING THAT AS A LENS TO GUIDE OUR LITERATURE STUDY.

WITH THIS UNIT, WE HAVE THREE ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS THAT WE WILL BE FOCUSING ON.

WHICH THERE AT THE TOP THERE.

HOW DOES WORK AND OUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS WORK INFLUENCE OUR LIVES AND OUR RELATIONSHIPS? HOW CAN I BE INDEPENDENT? ASKING THAT, HAVING STUDENTS HAVE THIS QUESTION WHEN I LEAVE PUBLIC EDUCATION, 12TH GRADE, HOW CAN I BE INDEPENDENT AND HOW CAN I BUILD A BUSINESS? THE STORIES THAT WE HAVE CHOSEN TO GO WITH THIS ARE THE SUMMER OF ICE CREAM, THE WHITE UMBRELLA, AND BUSINESS AT ELEVEN.

BECAUSE ALL OF THESE STORIES TALK ABOUT WORK ETHIC AND FINDING OPPORTUNITY AND BUILDING YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

NOT ONLY DOING THOSE THINGS, BUT DOING THAT AMONG YOUR COMMUNITY, WITH YOUR FAMILY, WITH YOUR FRIENDS, AND SHOWING THAT THIS SUCCESS COMES FROM ALL AROUND YOU.

THOSE ARE THINGS THAT WE WOULD EXPLORE AS WE'RE READING THESE TEXTS.

YOU WILL SEE WITH EACH OF THE THREE, WE HAVE THE VOCABULARY THAT WE WOULD USE TO PRE-TEACH IT.

YOU'LL ALSO SEE THE LITERARY FOCUSES BECAUSE IT'S STILL LITERATURE CLASS.

WITH THE SUMMER OF ICE CREAM, WE'LL TALK ABOUT MOTIF AND THEN DIALECT, AND THEN FLUENCY.

THE WHITE UMBRELLA, WE WOULD TALK ABOUT SYMBOLISM, AND THERE ARE SOME GROUP WORK AND WHOLE-CLASS DISCUSSIONS THERE.

THEN ALLITERATION, ASSONANCE, AND CONTINENTS, AND THEN A SYMPATHETIC SETTING.

THEN WITH BUSINESS AT ELEVEN, WE WOULD TALK ABOUT AUTHOR STYLE WITH THE LITERARY ELEMENTS.

THEN USING A COUPLE OF SUPPLEMENTAL TEXTS FROM NEWS ELA TO HELP, THESE ARE JUST A COUPLE OF THE ONES THAT I FOUND THERE.

BUT THESE ARE REALLY GREAT ARTICLES THAT SHOW THE INITIATIVE THAT PEOPLE HAVE TAKEN TO BUILDING BUSINESSES.

THEN IN THE END, THE FINAL ASSESSMENT FOR THIS PARTICULAR UNIT, THERE'S TWO DIFFERENT OPTIONS.

ONE WOULD BE TO MORE LIKE A NONFICTION STYLE, TO HAVE STUDENTS SUBMIT A BUSINESS PLAN WHERE THEY WOULD COME UP WITH THE BUSINESS AND THEY WOULD TALK ABOUT IT IN THEIR COMMUNITY.

DOING MORE THINGS WITH STRUCTURE LIKE FINDING, LIKE WHAT LOANS DO YOU NEED? WHERE IS YOUR BUSINESS GOING TO BE? WHAT IS SUPPLY AND DEMAND GOING TO BE FOR IT? WHAT ARE THE CULTURAL AND SOCIETAL IMPACTS OF THAT BUSINESS? THEN THE OTHER OPTION IS MORE OF A NARRATIVE WRITING WHERE YOU'RE MODELING A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT HAPPENED IN THE SHORT STORY.

CREATING A CHARACTER THAT IS BUILDING A BUSINESS, AND INSTEAD OF GOING THROUGH ALL OF THOSE ROUTINE TASKS OF BUILDING A BUSINESS, BUT LOOKING AT THE INFLUENCE THE COMMUNITY HAS, WHAT THEIR PROCESS IS, WHO THEY'RE COMMUNICATING WITH, WHAT THEIR STRUGGLES ARE.

PUTTING THEMSELVES IN THAT SCENARIO TO BUILD SUCCESS.

A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT WAYS WE TRY TO DO THAT WITH OUR ASSESSMENTS, GIVE STUDENTS DIFFERENT ROUTES TO SHOW THEIR KNOWLEDGE.

OUR HOPES IS WITH LOOKING AT THESE SHORT STORIES, THEY WILL BE WELL-EQUIPPED TO THINK ABOUT BUSINESS BUILDING, BUT ALSO WORK ETHIC AND HOW EVERYTHING COMES TOGETHER.

ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS?

>> THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THIS IS GOOD.

I LIKE THE TWO OPTIONS FOR THE ASSESSMENT AND IT'S ALWAYS GREAT TO HAVE.

>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TEXTS? ANNY COVERED EVERYTHING, WAS LOVELY.

>> I JUST LIKE TO SAY THANKS FOR GOING BACK AND DOING ALL THAT EXTRA WORK.

LOOKING INTO THAT AND RESEARCHING THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS THAT WE HAD, I THINK THAT THAT'S A PRETTY IMPORTANT STEP IN THIS PROCESS.

>> FOR SURE.

>> IT'S INTERESTING HOW A COMMUNITY CAN ZERO IN ON ONE SMALL ASPECT OF THESE THINGS, AND THEY MAKE THAT THE WHOLE ISSUE.

GETTING THAT OUT OF THE WAY NOW I THINK IS A POSITIVE THING AND THAT'S GOING TO SOLVE SOME MAYBE POTENTIAL PROBLEMS DOWN THE ROAD, AND NOW WE HAVE ANSWERS FOR IT.

>> FOR SURE.

>> THEN IT WAS MARY'S QUESTIONS.

WE ALL WE LEARN THINGS NEW EVERY DAY, SO THERE'S VALUE-ADD THERE AND I LIKE THE RESPONSES WE'VE GOT.

>> I'M HAPPY WITH THAT.

IT SOUNDS BETTER TO ME.

>> [LAUGHTER] GOOD. THE CONVERSATION WAS GOOD AND IMPORTANT AND I APPRECIATE IT.

[01:55:04]

>> THANK YOU. YES. I WANT TO ADD ONTO THAT.

THANK YOU LIKE TED SAID, FOR THE EXTRA WORK, I THINK THIS GIVES US A MUCH BETTER PICTURE OF THE WHOLE THING AND I LIKE IT.

I MEAN, I'D LOVE TO TEACH IT, I'D LOVE TO TAKE YOUR CLASS.

I LIKE, LIKE MARK SAID, THE FINAL ASSESSMENT TELLS ME THAT YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT THE DIFFERENT LEARNERS IN YOUR CLASS AND HOW THEY WILL RESPOND TO THE LITERATURE, I APPRECIATE THAT.

I APPRECIATE YOU ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS AND SHOWING US A REALLY GREAT PIECE OF WORK THAT YOU'VE DONE AS TEACHERS. APPRECIATE THAT.

>> THANKS.

DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR US? GREAT WORK LADIES.

>> THANKS.

>> ABOVE AND BEYOND. [BACKGROUND]

>> THANK YOU. WITH THAT, WE'LL TURN THAT OVER TO THE BOARD FOR THE SECOND READING.

>> I'D LIKE TO MOVE THAT WE APPROVE THE SECOND READING AND ADOPTION OF AMERICA STREET AND MULTICULTURAL ANTHOLOGY OF STORIES.

>>> WITH THE MOTION ON THE FLOOR, I WILL TURN TO OUR STUDENTS.

I LOOKED UP THE EXACT WORDING, AND I WILL ASK FOR YOUR ADVISORY VOTE OF PRO CON OR ABSTAIN.

>> PRO.

>> PRO.

>> WE HAVE OUR INPUT FROM OUR STUDENTS.

DO WE HAVE ANY FINAL QUESTIONS? WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR FROM OUR BOARD MEMBERS.

THE MOTION ON THE FLOOR IS FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO APPROVE THE SECOND READING OF THE ADOPTION OF AMERICA STREET, A MULTICULTURAL ANTHOLOGY OF STORIES, COPYRIGHT 2019.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY AYE?

>> AYE.

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED.

MOTION PASSES FIVE TO ZERO.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. WHILE I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, REALLY QUICKLY, I AM PLANNING TO CHECK IN WITH SHELLEY TO SEE IF WE CAN DO A FORMAL UPDATE ON THE ADOPTION FOR THE K8 IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

HOWEVER, THE LAST CAR SHOW TO ADDRESS MARY'S QUESTION IS MARCH 8TH.

WE HAVE ONE MARCH 7TH THAT IS SCHEDULED AT CHIEF MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THAT IS A RESCHEDULE OF TODAY'S CAR SHOW BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER.

WE HAVE SCHEDULED THAT FOR THE 7TH AND THEN WE WILL HAVE ONE HERE AT CAM ON MARCH 8TH.

SO THOSE ARE THE LAST FEW.

>> I WAS GOING TO SAY YOU'RE BEING VERY OPTIMISTIC.

[LAUGHTER]

>> WE WILL. THE CAM ONE IS THAT MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL?

>> IT WILL BE GRADES 3 THROUGH 8.

>> THREE THROUGH 8?

>> YES. THEN AT CHIEF, IT'LL BE 5 THROUGH 8.

ALL HAVE OUR OPPORTUNITIES TO SEE THE PRIMARY HAVE PASSED.

>> OKAY.

>> WE CAN STILL COME BY THE CASEY CENTER IF THEY'RE NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF ANY IN-SERVICE.

>> YES, CURRENTLY, ALL THE MATERIALS ARE IN THE BACK OF A CAR WAITING TO GET BACK TO.

[LAUGHTER] BUT YES, IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE, WE WILL HAVE THOSE AVAILABLE.

>> ALISON'S.

>> IS THE CURRICULUM ADOPTION ROADSHOW CAR SHOW?

>> YES.

>> I'M SORRY. I DIDN'T MEAN TO INTERRUPT.

I THOUGHT WE WERE PLANNING ON HAVING ONE HERE DURING A WORKSTATION FOR THE BOARD.

>> YES. THERE IS A WORK SESSION SCHEDULED FOR THE 27TH AS WELL.

>> OKAY.

>> YES.

>> BUT AS FAR AS GOING OUT TO THE BUILDINGS, THOSE ARE OUR ONLY TWO THAT ARE LEFT, BUT WE WILL HAVE A WORK SESSION IN MARCH 27TH, YES.

>> GREAT. FOR BOARD MEMBERS WHO CAN'T ATTEND THE SCHOOL, THERE WILL BE A WORK SESSION HERE FOR US SPECIFICALLY TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE CAR SHOW?

>> YES. WE PLAN TO GIVE A PRESENTATION AND HAVE MATERIALS IN THE ROOM FOR YOU TO LOOK AT AT THAT TIME.

BUT IT'S A RELATIVELY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME CONSIDERING THE MYRIAD OF MATERIALS AVAILABLE.

>> THANK YOU ALL.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THAT BRINGS US TO NEW BUSINESS.

[11. New Business (Board Vote w/Student Voice)]

NEXT STEP, WE HAVE THE APPROVAL OF THE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION FIVE-YEAR PLAN.

CINDY ARNOLD. [BACKGROUND]

>> THANK YOU, SCHOOL BOARD.

I HAVE A REPORT TO GIVE YOU ON CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

AT LEAST IT'S GOING TO FORWARD MY SLIDES FOR ME.

I WOULD LIKE TO START OFF BY JUST THANKING THE PEOPLE THAT SPOKE TONIGHT.

EMMA OLIVER, CHELSEA WAS UNABLE TO MAKE IT.

AS FORMER BATTLE GROUND STUDENTS ALSO WE'D LIKE TO THANK PRAIRIE FLORAL FOR THE FLOWERS.

PLEASE BE SURE TO TAKE THESE THINGS HOME, AND BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL JEWELRY AND METALS FOR THE WOOD ART AND THE GLASS ART.

PLEASE BE SURE TO TAKE THAT HOME.

THE PRAIRIE ROTC PROGRAM WITH SERGEANT CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS AND HIS GROUP AND ASHTON TEMPLATE WAS THE PERSON WHO SANG THE NATIONAL ANTHEM TONIGHT.

TONIGHT, I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THREE ITEMS.

[02:00:02]

THERE IS THE UPDATES IN CTE THAT I'D LIKE TO GIVE TO YOU FROM THE TIME I SPOKE LAST YEAR, I GAVE YOU SOME UPDATES THERE.

WHY IS THERE A FIVE-YEAR PLAN? YOU KNOW WHY, BUT I JUST WANT TO GIVE A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THAT AND HOW WE ARRIVE THERE THIS YEAR.

JUST A REMINDER, THE GOAL OF CTE IS WE PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH BOTH ACADEMIC AS WELL AS TECHNICAL SKILLS AND CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

WE'RE TRYING TO GET STUDENTS PREPARED FOR FUTURE CAREERS, WHATEVER THOSE CAREERS MAY END UP BEING.

CTE IS A STRENGTH BASED EDUCATION THAT BUILDS ON STUDENT'S INTERESTS.

THEY TAKE OUR CLASSES BECAUSE THEY'RE INTERESTED IN THOSE CLASSES.

IT BUILDS ON THOSE INTERESTS AND THOSE APTITUDES.

IT DOESN'T FOCUS ON DEFICIENCIES BUT WHAT THEY'RE INTERESTED IN.

IT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE NOT ONLY DO WE TEACH THEM THOSE ACADEMIC AND TECHNICAL SKILLS, BUT WE ALSO TEACH SOFT SKILLS, THINGS LIKE CRITICAL THINKING, COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK, CITIZENSHIP.

WE PUT TOGETHER THINGS LIKE THE INDUSTRY FAIR, MOCK INTERVIEWS.

WE CONNECT KIDS TO LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DAY.

ALL OF OUR CLASSES ARE REQUIRED TO DO THOSE THINGS.

IT'S ALL INTERWOVEN IN WHAT WE DO AND TEACH IN CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

SOME GENERAL UPDATES BETWEEN LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR.

WE DISSOLVED THE OLDER-YOUNGER PROGRAM.

WITH THE FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT PROGRAM, SO WE DECIDED TO START A PRESCHOOL.

IT WOULD STILL BE PART OF OUR CHILD DEVELOPMENT EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM.

OUR INTENTION WAS TO JUST DO A HALF-DAY PROGRAM.

WE HAD SO MUCH INTEREST.

IT'S ACTUALLY JUST LIKE PRAIRIES PROGRAM.

WE HAVE A MORNING SESSION, WE HAVE AN AFTERNOON SESSION, AND WE'VE PARTNERED WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION TO ALSO MAKE N INCLUSION JUST LIKE THE PRAIRIE PROGRAM.

NOW, IT COMPLETELY MIRRORS THE PRAIRIE PROGRAM IN LESS THAN A YEAR.

WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

STARTING NEXT YEAR, HAVE A HALF A CREDIT SUMMER SCHOOL FOR WORK-BASED LEARNING.

WE STARTED THAT BECAUSE WE HAD A MEETING EARLIER THIS YEAR WITH L&I AND SEVERAL OF OUR INDUSTRY PARTNERS AT DISTRICT OFFICE.

THERE ARE CLOSE TO 20 BUSINESSES THAT WERE THERE TO TALK WITH L&I.

THROUGH LISTENING TO THEIR STORIES, THEY REALLY PARTNER WITH US TO PREPARE OUR KIDS TO GO INTO APPRENTICESHIPS AND JOBS.

BUT PART OF THE HICCUP WAS NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE THE STUDENTS USE THE TOOLS IN THE SUMMER.

STUDENTS CAN ONLY USE THE TOOLS WHEN THEY'RE WORKING DIRECTLY WITH CTE PROGRAMS. IT'S CALLED THE VARIANCE.

I WORKED WITH OSPI AND SHELLEY AND TEACHING AND LEARNING AND BOTH APPROVED THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE STUDENTS TO DO A HALF CREDIT AND THE SUMMER GOING INTO THEIR JUNIOR YEAR AND GOING INTO THEIR SENIOR YEAR.

THIS WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO USE THE TOOLS ALL SUMMER.

NOT ONLY WILL THEY USE IT WHEN THEY'RE WORKING DURING THEIR JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEAR, BUT THEY'LL BE ABLE TO USE THE TOOLS IN THE SUMMER.

OUR PARTNERS ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

OUR CASEE STAFF HAS WORKED REALLY HARD TO GET MORE COLLEGE IN THE HIGH-SCHOOL CLASSES IN THE PROGRAM.

WE HAD ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE WITH CLARK AND WE WORKED WITH EVERETT COMMUNITY COLLEGE LAST YEAR.

THE TEACHERS PUT IN A LOT OF WORK TO GET, NOW, A TOTAL OF 25 COLLEGE AND THE HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS AT CASEE.

THEY ARE EXCITED TO TRY TO GET IT TO THE POINT WHERE STUDENTS CAN HAVE A TWO-YEAR DEGREE WHEN THEY GRADUATE AFTER GOING THROUGH THE CASEE PROGRAM.

THAT'S THEIR INTENT COMBINED WITH RUNNING STAR AND THE CREDITS THAT ARE OFFERED AT CASEE, THEY'D LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SEE STUDENTS GET A TWO-YEAR DEGREE WHEN THEY FINISH CASEE.

WE HAD SOME CHANGES IN OUR CULINARY AND OUR CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMS. WE'RE STILL TRYING TO HAVE CULINARY BE AN INDUSTRY STANDARD.

INSTEAD OF FOODS 1, FOODS 2, FOODS 3, WE HAVE NOW INTRODUCTION TO CULINARY ARTS, INTRODUCTION TO BAKING AND PASTRY, AND ADVANCED CULINARY ARTS.

NOW, IN OUR CULINARY PROGRAMS AT BOTH PRAIRIE AND BATTLE GROUND, IT'S A TWO-YEAR PROGRAM.

IF STUDENTS STAY IN CULINARY FOR TWO FULL YEARS, THEY'LL BE ABLE TO FULFILL THEIR GRADUATION PATHWAY IN CT IF THEY WANT TO AND THEN CONTINUE ON AT CASCADIA TECH.

WE HAD GEOMETRY AND CONSTRUCTION THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED EARLIER THIS YEAR, WHICH IS A BLOCK CLASS.

OUR TEACHERS AND COMMUNITY ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT.

WE'RE HOPING WE GET ENOUGH STUDENTS TO HAVE THE CLASS GO.

WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING AT UPGRADES IN CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

THAT'S ALWAYS ON OUR LIST.

WE WANT TO BE AS INDUSTRY STANDARD AS WE POSSIBLY CAN.

ALL OF OUR COMPUTER LABS ARE UPDATED ON A ROTATION BASIS.

WE HAVE SEVERAL LABS THAT ARE ON THE DOCKET FOR THIS YEAR, MOSTLY IN OUR DIGITAL ARTS PROGRAMS. WE'RE LOOKING FOR CONSTRUCTION SITE.

WORKING WITH KEVIN JOELMAN, HIS TEAM ON WHERE TO PUT THAT, WE'VE BEEN BUILDING IN AN AREA THAT'S NOT GOING TO WORK AS WE GROW.

[02:05:03]

WE ALSO REALLY WORK AT MAKING SURE OUR EQUIPMENT IS SAFE.

WE HAVE STAFF ASSISTANCE IN ANY PROGRAM THAT NEEDS A STAFF ASSISTANT WHERE WE HAVE MULTIPLE ROOMS, SO STUDENTS USING POWER TOOLS, WE HAVE STAFF ASSISTANCE IN THOSE PROGRAMS. THIS JUST HAPPENS TO BE MY DREAM KITCHEN THAT YOU SEE HERE.

[LAUGHTER] WHY IS THERE A FIVE-YEAR PLAN? CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION HAS TO MEET STANDARDS ACCORDING TO OSPI.

WE ALSO HAVE A POLICY, WHERE THE BOARD APPROVES THE CTE PLAN.

WE HAVE TO FOCUS ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AS WELL AS TECHNICAL EDUCATION FOR OUR KIDS.

WE HAVE TO STRENGTHEN CONNECTIONS BETWEEN WHAT WE DO AND WHAT STUDENTS ARE GOING TO DO BEYOND US.

WE HAVE TO OFFER THINGS LIKE DUAL CREDIT.

OUR STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN AN INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED CREDENTIAL.

THIS IS ALL PART OF OUR PROGRAMMING, AND WE HAVE TO KEEP TRACK OF THAT IN SKYWARD.

IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE DO THESE THINGS.

WE HAVE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE TO OUR LOCAL AND TO OUR STATE.

IT ALL WORKS TOGETHER.

THE THINGS THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES PERKINS, OUR COMPREHENSIVE LOCAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT, WHICH WAS A PART OF PERKINS THIS YEAR.

WE WORKED WITH A LARGE GROUP WHEN WE DO THAT, WE DO THE CLNA EVERY OTHER YEAR WHERE WE WORK WITH SEVERAL BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS.

WE HAVE ADMINISTRATION THAT ARE PART OF THAT PARENT'S STUDENT.

WE HAVE OUR HOMELESS LIAISON.

WE HAVE SPECIAL EDUCATION REPRESENTATION THAT WORKS WITH THAT TEAM AND IT'S ALSO MY GENERAL ADVISORY.

OUR ADVISORIES MEET THREE TIMES A YEAR.

GENERAL ADVISORY MEETS USUALLY ON AVERAGE ANYWHERE BETWEEN THREE AND FIVE TIMES A YEAR AND THE DISTRICT-WIDE PLAN HAS PIECES OF ALL OF THESE THINGS.

IT'S MANY MOVING PARTS, WE DO A BIG PORTION ON DATA ANALYSIS AND I WANTED TO JUST GIVE YOU JUST A GLIMPSE OF THE DATA THAT WE LOOK AT AS WE DEVELOP THE FIVE-YEAR PLAN.

THIS IS THE BIG OVERALL VIEW, SO THIS DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT TELLS US MUCH.

BUT I JUST WANTED TO SHOW YOU THE START.

THIS IS OUR ALL OF OUR CTE PROGRAMS AND THE DISTRICT, MALE AND BROKEN DOWN BY MALE AND FEMALE, HALF A CREDIT TO A FULL FOUR CREDITS.

SOME OF OUR STUDENTS, YOU HEARD FROM OLIVER TONIGHT.

HE TOOK SEVERAL CTE CLASSES WHEN HE WAS IN SCHOOL.

WE HAVE A LOT OF STUDENTS THAT DO THAT, 99% OF OUR STUDENTS GET AT LEAST A HALF A CREDIT, AND THEN IT GOES ON FROM THERE.

THIS IS AGAIN JUST AN OVERARCHING VIEW.

WE ALSO LOOK AT RACE AND ETHNICITY AND CT WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT OUR DATA, SO THIS IS A BREAKDOWN OF THAT.

WHEN WE LOOKED AT RACE AND ETHNICITY LAST YEAR, WHEN WE LOOKED AT THIS, THERE'S REALLY NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUR GENERAL POPULATION AND THE RACE AND ETHNICITY GROUPS.

THERE'S NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE, BUT THERE ISN'T GENDER, SO THAT'S WHAT WE REALLY FOCUSED IN ON AS WE LOOKED AT THIS LAST YEAR.

I'M JUST GOING TO QUICKLY GO THROUGH THAT IN AGRICULTURE MALE AND FEMALE AS EVEN.

IN AUTOMOTIVE, WHILE FEMALES START, THEY DON'T CONTINUE IN OUR PROGRAMS. BUSINESS. IT'S THE FEMALES THAT PERSIST TO THREE CREDITS AND MORE. DIGITAL ARTS.

IT'S THE MALES THAT CONTINUE TO THREE CREDITS OR MORE.

ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING MALES DOMINATE.

IN FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE, FEMALE DOMINATE TO TWO CREDITS, BUT BY THREE CREDITS IT'S EVEN.

MEDICAL SCIENCE FEMALES DOMINATE AND MORE FEMALES PERSIST, SO THAT MEANS THAT MORE FEMALES GO ONTO THREE AND FOUR CREDITS.

ROTC IS EVEN, THERE'S MALES FINISHED JUST A LITTLE AHEAD AT THREE CREDITS AND MORE, SIGN LANGUAGE START EVEN BUT FEMALES PERSIST.

WELDING MANUFACTURING WHILE FEMALES START, HAVE VERY FEW WHAT'S CALLED COMPLETERS, SO VERY FEW FEMALES THAT TAKE TWO OR MORE CLASSES IN WELDING AND MANUFACTURING AND IT'S THE SAME WITH WHAT ART.

IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US TO LOOK AT THE WHY AND SO THAT'S WHAT WE DO.

WE REALLY CONCENTRATE ON WHY IS THAT? SOME OF THE QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER IS, WHERE ARE THOSE GAPS? WE LOOK AT SPECIAL POPULATIONS, SO IN SPECIAL EDUCATION WE LOOK AT THE SAME THING.

SPECIAL POPULATIONS PERSIST IN AGRICULTURE, ROTC, WELDING AND DIGITAL ARTS.

BUT THEY'RE LESS APT TO COMPLETE IN MEDICAL, BUSINESS, ENGINEERING, MANUFACTURING, ASL, AUTO AND WOODWORKING.

AGAIN, WE HAVE TO LOOK AT WHY IS THAT.

WE ALSO LOOK AT HOMELESSNESS AND SO THIS IS ACTUALLY THE TABLEAU OR THE DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM THAT WE'VE DEVELOPED IN CTE AND I'VE WORKED WITH THE COMPANY TO DO THAT AND YOU CAN SEE HERE, IT'S DISTRICT, IT'S THREE YEARS COMBINED, HOMELESS STATUS,

[02:10:02]

CREDIT ACCRUAL, SO JUST WANTED TO POINT OUT THAT WE HAVE THE CHOICES AS WE'RE LOOKING AT OUR DATA ON CHOOSING A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN HOMELESSNESS FOR BUSINESS, SO WHILE THEY TAKE A LOT OF AGRICULTURE THAT YOU CAN SEE, THEY DON'T TAKE AS MUCH BUSINESS, AND ARE HOMELESS LIAISON AS PART OF THAT GROUP AND SO SHE HAD A GOOD EXPLANATION THAT FOR OUR HOMELESS STUDENTS THAT THEY ARE MANY TIMES EXPERIENCED TRAUMA.

BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MUCH MATH AND BUSINESS, THEY'RE LESS LIKELY TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THAT BECAUSE OF THE TRAUMA THAT THEY MIGHT BE FACING, SO IT'S SOMETHING FOR US TO REALLY CONSIDER.

WE DO A LOT OF ANALYSIS WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT THE DATA, AND THIS IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE, SO SPECIAL POPULATIONS ARE LESS LIKELY TO PERSIST IN CONSTRUCTION TRADES.

THESE ARE SOME OF THE REASONS WHY THESE ARE JUST REASONS THAT WE CAME UP WITH.

BUT THEY COULD BE POSSIBILITIES.

WE TALKED ABOUT MARKETING MATERIALS IS SOMETHING THAT WE REALLY WANT TO FOCUS IN ON AND THAT'S ONE OF OUR GOALS.

WE ALSO WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S ADEQUATE DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE DO IS WE DO TRAINING ON THAT AND WE ALSO INCLUDE SPECIAL EDUCATION AS PART OF THAT TRAINING.

THESE ARE THE RESULTS AND THE ACTIONS.

BETWEEN LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR WE ARE DOING TRAUMA TRAINING WITH OUR SEL TEAM THAT WITH OUR CTE STAFF AND THEIR FOCUS IS ON TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE, SO AGAIN, THAT'S OUR CURRENT TRAINING AND THEY'RE GIVING US SOME REALLY GOOD STRATEGIES TO WORK WITH OUR STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY TRAUMA.

WE ALSO HAVE MARKETING WORK WITH JENNA BUSH OR HILL AND THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM HAD BEEN WORKING WITH US ON THAT, SO WE CAN REALLY WORK ON TARGET AUDIENCES AND CTE BRANDING SO THAT WE CAN HOPEFULLY REACH STUDENTS AND PARENTS OF AREAS WHERE THEY MAY NOT KNOW WHAT OUR PROGRAMMING IS SO THAT WE CAN HOPEFULLY PULL IN SOME OF THOSE GROUPS THAT ARE LESS REPRESENTED IN CTE.

WE HAVE SPECIAL EDUCATION TRAINING TARGETED FOR THE FALL.

IN 2021, WE PROVIDED CT ON INTERCULTURAL EFFECTIVENESS.

WE HAD A BIG TRAINING ON THAT FOR THE FULL YEAR.

WE HAVE TERMINATED CLASS FEES, SO WE'RE REMOVING THE BARRIER OF CLASS FEES IN CTE, SO FOR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED, WE HAVE NO MORE FEES.

WE HAVE THE 4TH GRADE CAREER FAIR COMING BACK THIS YEAR.

WE ARE PUTTING TOGETHER STUDENT FOCUS GROUPS WHERE YOU SAW WHERE AUTOMOTIVE STUDENTS START, BUT FEMALES DON'T CONTINUE.

SO WE'RE PULLING THOSE FEMALE STUDENTS TOGETHER TO FIND OUT WHY.

WE ARE ALSO DOING SOME TEACHER AND COUNSELOR FOCUS GROUPS THIS YEAR.

THIS IS JUST A SNIPPET OF OUR CLNA AND SO YOU CAN SEE THAT SOME OF THOSE ITEMS THAT I TALKED ABOUT ARE A PART OF THE COMPREHENSIVE LOCAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT, WHICH THEN GO INTO THE FIVE-YEAR PLAN THAT YOU HAVE BEFORE YOU TONIGHT.

YOU CAN SEE HERE THAT WE HAVE THE 4TH GRADE CAREER FAIR, THAT OUR CTE STAFF GET TRAINING, THAT THE BATTLE GROUND PRESCHOOL IS NOW IN FULL SESSION AND A LOT OF THIS UPDATES THAT I GAVE YOU TONIGHT.

IN SUMMARY THAT I GAVE YOU SOME UPDATES AND CTE, WHY THERE'S A FIVE-YEAR PLAN AND HOW WE ARRIVED THERE AND SO DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ME? OH, I WANT TO TELL YOU ONE OTHER THING.

CTE LEARNERS NATIONAL AVERAGE.

OUR STUDENTS THAT HAVE TWO YEARS OF CTE OR MORE GRADUATE AT 10% HIGHER RATE THAN THE GENERAL POPULATION.

FOR OUR DISTRICT IS 9% OF OUR STUDENTS AND BATTLE GROUND THAT HAVE CTE CLASSES TWO FULL YEARS OR MORE GRADUATED AT 9% HIGHER THAN OUR GENERAL POPULATION AND BELOW GROUND.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ME?

>> WELL, I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT I APPRECIATE THE EXTRA STEPS THAT YOU'VE TAKEN TO NOT LET THE GENDER NORMS OVERRIDE YOUR DECISION AND WHY THESE COMPLETERS ARE WHAT THEY ARE AND YOU'RE ACTUALLY LOOKING FURTHER INTO THAT AND NOT JUST OKAY, IT'S JUST A WORD ON CARS.

WELL, IT'S NOT NECESSARILY TRUE.

THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING ELSE GOING ON, SO I APPRECIATE THAT.

>> THANK YOU.

>> ANOTHER QUESTION, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE PERFECT TIMING FOR OUR DISCUSSION EARLIER WHEN WE WERE LOOKING AT OUR OWN SCHOOL BOARD STANDARD OF THAT.

[NOISE] HOW DO WE GET DATA AT A LEVEL THAT WE CAN REALLY SEE CHANGES IN PROGRESS? I THINK YOU SHOWED US SOME OF THAT TONIGHT AND LIKE, HOW CAN WE DO THAT IN OTHER AREAS?

>> THANK YOU.

>> I ALWAYS APPRECIATE THE CLARITY OF YOU REPORTING TO US AS MARX AND THE DATA IS VERY CLEAR, EASY TO DIGEST.

[02:15:02]

I APPRECIATE THAT VERY MUCH.

GIVES ME A REAL VISION OF WHAT'S HAPPENED IN CTE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I WISH WE HAD THESE PROGRAMS WHEN I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL.

>> YEAH, FOR SURE. [LAUGHTER]

>> ALL WE HAD WAS HOME EC AND SHOP.

[LAUGHTER] THAT WAS IT.

>> ME TOO.

>> THOSE WERE OUR OPTIONS.

>> YEAH. THE VARIETY IS REALLY IMPRESSIVE.

>> I'VE MADE SOME GOOD PILLOWS THOUGH.

[LAUGHTER]

>> IN SHOP?

>> IN SHOP, YEAH. [LAUGHTER]

>> WE HAD ELECTRICITY AND DRAFTING WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL.

>> I REALLY DO APPRECIATE THE PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE IN BATTLE GROUND.

A LOT OF THEM WERE ESTABLISHED BEFORE MY TIME AND WE DO HAVE REALLY GREAT SHOP CLASSES COMPARED TO OTHER DISTRICTS AND REALLY GOOD PROGRAMS THAT JUST HAVE HAD A GREAT FOUNDATION.

I APPRECIATE THIS JOB.

>> I THINK SOME OF THE THINGS THAT IMPRESSED ME IS WE JUST DON'T HAVE THE CLASSES, IT'S THE BIG PICTURE.

I MEAN, IT'S THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE, THE PLAN ITSELF.

IT'S GUARANTEED LONGEVITY, I GUESS.

IT JUST DOESN'T FIZZLE OUT SOMEWHERE BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T LOOKED TO ENSURE ITS FUTURE AND WE HAVE, SO WELL, WE HAVEN'T, YOU HAVE AND YOUR TEAM HAS AND THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS.

THANK YOU FOR THAT.

I APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK THAT GOES INTO IT AND SO I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT AND I THINK I JUST FEEL LIKE THERE'S A SWING THESE DAYS TO DO HANDS-ON TRAINING.

I'M GLAD WE'RE PREPARED FOR THAT AND HAVE SO MANY OPTIONS FOR OUR STUDENTS.

>> [BACKGROUND]

>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? COMMENTS?

>> I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION FIVE-YEAR PLAN.

>> WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR, ADVISORY VOTE FROM OUR STUDENTS, PRO, CON OR ABSTAIN?

>> PRO.

>> OKAY.

>> WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR THE BOARD OF THE DIRECTORS APPROVE THE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION FIVE-YEAR PLAN WITH INPUTS, ADVISORY VOTES FROM OUR STUDENTS.

ANY OTHER FURTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY, AYE.

>> AYE. [OVERLAPPING]

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED.

MOTION PASSES FIVE TO ZERO.

>> THANK YOU. THANK YOU, CINDY.

[OVERLAPPING]

>> NEXT ON THE AGENDA, WE HAVE THE APPROVAL OF THE PURCHASE OF LEGO EDUCATION KITS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES, WHERE NOW, YOU HAVE WAITED A LONG TIME.

[LAUGHTER] FOR THOSE WHO ARE STILL IN THIS ROOM.

>> NOT AS LONG AS SCOTT.

[LAUGHTER]

>> I LEARNED TO COME IN AT EIGHT. [LAUGHTER]

>> [BACKGROUND].

>> MY PRESENTATION AND REQUESTS ACTUALLY GOES ALONG REALLY WELL WITH CINDY'S BECAUSE I'M GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT OUR SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM TARGETING KINDERGARTEN THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS.

IN THE PAST, WE'VE LOOKED AT PAST DATA AROUND WHAT STUDENTS NEED, AND WE ALSO LOOKED AT DISPROPORTIONALITY DATA AND WHO'S ATTENDING, AND SO WE ANALYZED A LOT OF DIFFERENT COMPANIES AND WE CAME UP WITH THE BEST PROPOSAL IS HANDS-ON LEARNING AND TARGETED INSTRUCTION AROUND LEARNING LOSS, AND I'M HERE TO PRESENT A PROPOSAL FROM LEGO EDUCATION THAT IS INTEGRATED AND IT'S A PROJECT-BASED LEARNING APPROACH THAT INTEGRATES LITERACY, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, THAT ENGINEERING, ART, AND MATHEMATICS.

REALLY TRYING TO GET ENGAGEMENT WITH SUMMER SCHOOL STUDENTS TO IGNITE THAT PASSION FOR LEARNING.

I'M REALLY EXCITED TO PUT THIS IN FRONT OF YOU AND TO INVITE YOU TO SUMMER SCHOOL.

IT'S JULY 10TH THROUGH 20TH.

IT'S GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN.

WE'RE HOUSING IT ON THREE CAMPUSES.

LAST YEAR WE HAD 700 STUDENTS.

THIS YEAR WE'RE BUILDING CAPACITY FOR 1,000 STUDENTS AT GLENWOOD, YAKULTS, AND RIVER.

I THINK ALL THE OTHER INFORMATION SPECIFIC AROUND GOALS, LEARNING OBJECTIVES IS ALL IN THE PAPERWORK, BUT I'M HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS IF YOU HAVE ANY.

>> SOUNDS COOL.

>> I'M SO EXCITED.

>> YEAH.

>> I JUST WOULD ADD THAT WHEN A PARENT IS PRESENTING THIS TO THEIR CHILD, WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO TO SUMMER SCHOOL OR WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO TO LEGO CAMP?

>> RIGHT, YES.

>> [LAUGHTER] WHEN I LOOKED AT THE KITS THAT LYNELLE SHARED, SEEM LIKE A NO-BRAINER.

>> THE KITS LOOK AMAZING.

>> IT'S GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN AND WE LOOK

[02:20:03]

AT WHAT TYPE OF LEARNER GETS INVITED TO SUMMER SCHOOL.

WE TARGETED ON READING AND MATH SCORES AND WE LOOKED AT THE MODULES THAT ARE BASED AROUND BOOSTING THOSE SCORES UP THROUGH A FUN AND ENGAGING WAY, AND SO A LOT OF KIDS DON'T GET TO EXPERIENCE SUCCESS WHEN WE'RE TEACHING IN THE TYPICAL SETTING, AND SO I THINK THIS IS GOING TO PROVIDE A REALLY FUN AND ENGAGING EXPERIENCE FOR KIDS THAT MIGHT NOT TYPICALLY GET TO EXPERIENCE THAT IN THE YEAR.

>> IT'S K-12, RIGHT?

>> K-8.

>> K-8, OKAY.

>> NOW, THE THE HIGH SCHOOL HAVE DIFFERENT CREDIT RECOVERY OPTIONS THAT WE DO RUN SIMULTANEOUSLY THROUGH SUMMER AS WELL.

>> IT JUST SAY K-12 IN HERE SO I'M JUST CLARIFYING THAT.

>> YES. APOLOGIES.

>> YEAH. I MEAN, IT'S TOO BAD, I MEAN.

>> YEAH, K-12, I KNOW LEGO OFFERS K-12, BUT THIS SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM, K-8.

>> DO THE STUDENTS KEEP THESE KITS OR THE KITS STAY WITH US?

>> NO, THEY STAY WITH US, AND THE GREAT THING ABOUT THIS PURCHASE.

>> SO WE'LL BE ABLE TO,

>> IS THAT WE GET TO CONTINUE USING THESE MATERIALS FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS, SO IT REALLY FITS THE DESCRIPTION OF WHAT SR FUNDS ARE INTENDED TO DO AROUND LEARNING LOSS BECAUSE IT'S A ONE-TIME LARGE PURCHASE.

BUT FROM NOW ON, KIDS WILL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE MODULES AND WE'LL JUST HAVE TO REPLENISH.

WE GET THE RIGHTS TO THE CURRICULUM, WE GET THE RIGHT STANDING UPDATES, WE GET THE RIGHT TO THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

ALL WE REALLY HAVE TO DO IS REPLENISHMENT, SO IT REALLY FITS THE MOLD FOR LEARNING LOSS FUNDS.

>> VERY IMPRESSIVE.

>> WHEN YOU SAY REPLENISH, I GUESS WILL THERE BE ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION COSTS?

>> NO. WE GET THOSE UPDATED.

LIKE THE GAL WAS SAYING LIKE SOMETIMES THEIR BIGGEST PRODUCT THAT THEY HAVE TO REPLENISH ARE THE FIGURINES BECAUSE THOSE TEND TO GET LOST A LOT.

[LAUGHTER] SHE SAID, THEY TEND TO WALK AWAY A LOT, SO YOU MIGHT HAVE TO REPLACE SOME OF THE FIGURINES, AND THEN I SET THE TECH SPECS TO SCOTT BECAUSE THERE'S COMPUTER PROGRAM ELEMENTS WITH THE UPPER MODULES, AND SO AGAIN, WE JUST HAVE TO STAY UPDATED WITH SOFTWARE, THINGS LIKE THAT.

>> I GUESS THAT WAS ONE OF MY QUESTIONS ABOUT LICENSING. [OVERLAPPING]

>> SOFTWARE IN TERMS OF LIKE OUR PLATFORM, NO LICENSE REQUIRED.

IT'S JUST THE SOFTWARE HAS TO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT THAT APP.

>> GOT YOU.

>> WHICH SCOTT IS MAKING SURE WE HAVE UPDATED SOFTWARE NEXT, SO I THINK WE'RE GOOD.

>> I'D JUST ADD THAT, I KNOW WHEN WE HAD TO DO THE MAD SCRAMBLE DURING THE COVID YEARS AND THE SCIENCE RESOURCE CENTER PULLED TOGETHER THINGS.

>> YES.

>> IT'S LOVELY TO SEE YOU'RE STICKING WITH THE STEM THEME FOR THE SUMMER.

>> YEAH, THE INTEGRATION.

>> THAT'S REALLY A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE KIDS, JUST A PASSION FOR LEARNING, AND AGAIN, IT PRIMES THEM UP FOR DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF LEARNING AND BUILDS OPPORTUNITIES WHERE THEY MIGHT NOT SEE SUCCESS IN A TYPICAL BRICK AND MORTAR.

>> YEAH, THIS SEEMS A LOT MORE SUSTAINABLE.

>> YES.

>> YEAH, THAT'S THE HOPE.

>> IT'S GREAT.

>> IS THIS CENTERED AROUND LEARNING LOSS?

>> YES.

>> WOULD THE STUDENTS BE ABLE TO VOLUNTARILY GO IF THEY WERE INTERESTED? [LAUGHTER] [OVERLAPPING]

>> IT'S A GREAT QUESTION.

[LAUGHTER] SUMMER SCHOOL TYPICALLY IS LIKE WE TRIANGULATE DATA BASED ON LIKE I ALREADY READING SCORES.

WE LOOK AT MATH SCORES AND THEN WE LOOK AT CLASSROOM DATA.

WE REALLY LEAN A LOT ON LIKE A READING SPECIALISTS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL, INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES IN PRINCIPLE INPUT.

THAT DATA AND IF THEY'RE IN LAP PROGRAM OR IF THEY'RE AN EL STUDENT OR IF THEY'RE RECEIVING ANY SERVICES, WE REALLY TARGET THOSE KIDS THAT MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CLASSROOM.

THAT'S OUR FIRST PUSH TO INVITE THOSE KIDS.

THEN THE NEXT PUSH IS LIKE, WE HAVE X AMOUNT OF SPACES LEFT AND AS YOU KNOW, SO IF WE HAVE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF KIDS, IT BECOMES JUST A DIFFERENT LEVEL OF DIFFERENTIATION IN THE CLASSROOM.

BUT WE HAVE THE MODULES, K8.

BUT LIKE I SAID, AS A BOARD MEMBER, I INVITE YOU TO COME PLAY [LAUGHTER] AND HAVE FUN AND LEARN BECAUSE I'M GOING TO BE OUT THERE AND I THINK IT'S JUST GOING TO BE A GREAT TIME.

I'M REALLY EXCITED FOR THAT.[BACKGROUND]

>> AP LEGO FOR.

[OVERLAPPING] [LAUGHTER]

>> I THINK IT WAS ON THE CONSENT AGENDA AS WELL.

YOU'RE CONTRACTING WITH A GROUP CALLED ICE STEM ACADEMY.

IT LOOKS LIKE THEY'RE OUT OF CANVAS.

I LOOKED THEM UP AS AN EXAMPLE.

I'M SORRY, MIGHT NOT BE YOU.

>> IT MIGHT NOT BE.

>> YEAH, BUT I WAS JUST SAYING THAT ALL.

>> YEAH, IT MIGHT BE CHEAP, TRUE.

>> YEAH.

>> NOW, THIS ISN'T A CHARMING ANYMORE.

>> YOU GO FINE.

>> BUT SINCE IT'S LIKE A CREDIT RECOVERY TYPE SITUATION, WOULD THIS BE MORE OF A REQUIREMENT OR IT'S LIKE [OVERLAPPING]

[02:25:02]

>> WHAT WE WANT TO DO. OUR BIG GOAL IS TO GET STUDENTS IDENTIFIED, INVITATIONS AND HANDS OF CLASSROOM TEACHERS BEFORE SPRING CONFERENCES SO THAT TEACHERS CAN HAVE THE ACTUAL INFORMATION TO GIVE THAT FACE-TO-FACE CONTACT.

OTHERWISE, THE LEARNING SUPPORT COORDINATOR AND THE TEAM AND I WILL BE MAKING PERSONAL PHONE CALLS, EMAILS, AND MAILERS.

I'LL ALSO BE UTILIZING LIKE THEY FCRC ADVOCATES.

WE TARGET STUDENTS THAT MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS TOO.

THEN WE'LL UTILIZE OUR INTERPRETER TEAMS AS WELL.

JUST A BIG TEAM EFFORT AROUND TARGETING KIDS THAT NEED IT. GREAT QUESTIONS.

>> I DON'T KNOW.

>> NO. THOSE ARE GOOD QUESTIONS.

ANYTHING ELSE? I HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE WILL BE GREAT FUN.

>> AT LEAST SORA AND I.

>> YEAH. [LAUGHTER]

>> GREAT.

>> READY FOR MOTION?

>> YEAH.

>> OKAY. I WOULD MOVE THAT WE APPROVE THE PURCHASE OF THE LEGO EDUCATION KIDS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES AS PRESENTED.

>> ADVISORY VOTE FROM THE PRO.

HEY, WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVED THE PURCHASE OF LEGO EDUCATION KIDS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES.

ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? HEARING NONE, ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED.

MOTION PASSES 5-0.

>> THANK YOU, BOARD.

>> THANK YOU LINO.

>> SCOTT, WE FINALLY MADE IT TO YOU.

>> PLEASE SHARE WITH US ABOUT THE PURCHASE OF THE CHROMEBOOKS.

>> THAT DIDN'T SOUND AS ENTHUSIASTIC AS I HOPED.

[LAUGHTER] FIRST OFF, I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME WITH US, MR. HENRIKSON. IT'S BEEN A PLEASURE.

>> THANK YOU, SCOTT.

>> THE PROPOSAL IN FRONT OF YOU IS PRETTY STRAIGHTFORWARD.

WE'RE LOOKING TO PURCHASE 715 NEW CHROMEBOOKS.

THIS WILL REFILL CARTS THAT ARE USED PRIMARILY IN GRADES K THROUGH FIVE.

JUST TO ANSWER THE QUESTION.

YES, THE CHROMEBOOKS WILL BE SUPPORTING THE LEGO SYSTEMS THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE.

[LAUGHTER] I HAVE MULTIPLE STAFF THAT HAVE VOLUNTEERED TO PROVIDE ONSITE TECH SUPPORT [LAUGHTER] EVERY DAY.

MADE SIGN-UP SYSTEM FOR IT.

UNFORTUNATELY MIGHT BE TRUE.

[LAUGHTER] JUST AS AN EXPLANATION ON WHY WERE REPLACED CHROMEBOOKS.

CHROMEBOOKS LIFESPAN HAS GOVERNED BY A PROCESS CALLED AUE, WHICH IS AUTO UPDATE EXPLORATION.

THAT IS THE DATE AT WHICH GOOGLE STOPS UPDATING THE SOFTWARE FOR THAT.

THAT DOESN'T MEAN THE DEVICE STOPS WORKING.

IT WILL KEEP FUNCTIONING, BUT AS IT GETS OLDER AND OLDER AND MORE OUT-OF-DATE APPS STOP WORKING.

APPS LIKE SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENT, I'M ASSUMING BASED ON WHAT I'VE READ ABOUT LEGO, THAT IT IS BARELY SENSITIVE TO STAYING UP-TO-DATE.

TYPICALLY WHAT WE DO IS WE'LL RUN A CHROMEBOOK FOR ANYWHERE UP TO A YEAR PAST ITS AUTO UPDATE EXPLORATION BASED ON OUR NEEDS.

THIS YEAR, WE'RE REPLACING A DEVICE THAT EXPIRED IN JUNE OF LAST YEAR.

THE PURCHASE IN FRONT OF YOU AS PART OF AN NASPO CONTRACT.

IT HAS BEEN VERIFIED BY DARCY SPEAKER AND MY ASSISTANT DEAN SWEENEY TO MAKE SURE WE MEET ALL THE BID REQUIREMENTS AND JUST SEE, WE WILL HAVE A PURCHASE LATER IN THE SCHOOL HERE LATE LATE SPRING, LIKELY FOR CHROMEBOOK REPLACEMENT FOR THE TAKE-HOME ONE-TO-ONE STUDENTS. ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS?
