[7. Communications]

I KNOW WE HAVE SEVERAL STUDENTS IN THE BACK.

DOES ANYBODY WANT TO VOLUNTEER TO GO FIRST OR SHALL I CALL A NAME? COME ON UP. PLEASE STATE YOUR NAME AND YOUR SCHOOL.

[OVERLAPPING]

>> HELLO, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS BRINA CHEACHT AND I'M THE ASB PRESIDENT, IKAM ACADEMY.

TONIGHT, I'LL BE SHARING ALL THE DIFFERENT EXCITING AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS THAT OUR LEADERSHIP GROUPS HAVE PUT TOGETHER FOR OUR SCHOOL AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, OUR STUDENTS.

BEGINNING WITH OUR NHS, WE HAVE RECENTLY HELD OUR ALL-SCHOOL CHESS TOURNAMENT, WHERE STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO GATHER TOGETHER AFTER SCHOOL TO PLAY A LITTLE GAME OF CHESS, AND COMPETE AGAINST ONE ANOTHER.

WE ALSO DID OUR FOOD DRIVE AS WELL.

WE ALSO HAVE OUR ANNUAL DOOR DECORATING CONTEST THAT WE'RE WORKING ON RIGHT NOW.

STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO DECORATE THEIR CLASSROOM DOORS WITH HOLIDAY-THEMED IDEAS, WHICH RIGHT NOW IT LOOKS VERY CREATIVE, SO THANK GOODNESS.

[LAUGHTER] WITH OUR INTERACT, WE HAVE THE OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD, WHERE THEY HAVE PUT UP SHOE BOXES AROUND THE CLASSROOM TO COLLECT ALL THE SUPPLIES AND HYGIENE ITEMS, AND TOYS TO GIVE OUT TO STUDENTS IN NEED.

NOW, WE'RE WORKING ON SELLING HOLIDAY GRAMS THAT WILL BE GIVING DONATIONS TO EACH YOUR HOUSE.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, ASB HAS BEEN WORKING ON MANY PROJECTS, AND IS WORKING ON MANY MORE PROJECTS COMING UP, BUT WE HAVE HAD OUR FALL HARVEST PARTY, OUR FALL SPIRIT ASSEMBLY TO COMMEMORATE ALL THESE LITTLE FALL ACTIVITIES TO CELEBRATE A LITTLE FALL SEASON.

JUST ON SATURDAY, WE HAD OUR WINTER FORMAL AT THE BALKAN COMMUNITY CENTER, WHICH IT WENT VERY WELL.

IT WAS AMAZING TIME FOR PEOPLE TO GET TOGETHER WITH THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

NOW, WE'RE JUST HAVING OUR SPIRIT WEEK.

OVERALL, OUR LEADERSHIP GROUPS HAVE BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD AND WE HAVE MANY PROJECTS THAT ARE COMING UP THAT WE'RE PLANNING AND WE CAN'T WAIT TO SHARE THEM ALL WITH YOU. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, BRINA. [APPLAUSE] NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN.

>> I HAVE A QUESTION ACTUALLY.

THIS IS ROB OVER HERE, WHO WON THE CHESS TOURNAMENT, DO YOU KNOW?

>> YES. IT WAS DIFFERENT STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS.

>> PERFECT. THANK YOU.

>> ALL RIGHT.

GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE.

THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO BE HERE TODAY.

MY NAME IS ELISE COLE AND I'M IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL ASB PRESIDENT AT CAM ACADEMY.

>> MY NAME IS VIRGINIA PAUL AND I'M A CAMERA CADDY, THE EIGHTH GRADE ASB REPRESENTATIVE.

[00:15:01]

TODAY WE ARE HERE TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON CAM MIDDLE SCHOOL, ASB'S PROGRESS.

>> FIRST-OFF, WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU ON BEHALF OF CAM MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR ALL THE EFFORT YOU HAVE PUT INTO HELPING US TRANSITION INTO OUR TEMPORARY BUILDING AT THE LEWISVILLE CAMPUS.

WE APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE AND WE'RE SO EXCITED FOR THE MODULAR BUILDINGS TO BE COMPLETED.

I KNOW IT'S BEEN A LOT OF WORK TO MAKE THE LEWISVILLE CAMPUS ACCESSIBLE FOR SCHOOLING PURPOSES.

>> WE BEGAN OUR NEW SCHOOL YEAR, OUR NEW CAMPUS, AND I'VE SETTLED IN NICELY.

IN OCTOBER, ASB PLAN TO WALKATHON AND STUDENTS IN GRADES 5-8 WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE AT THE BATTLEGROUND TRACK.

THIS WORKED OUT WONDERFULLY.

OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL ASB, WHERE AM I? THAT WORKED OUT WONDERFULLY. STUDENTS COLLECTED PLEDGES FOR EVERY LAP THEY WALKED HER IN.

THE MONEY WE RAISED, WENT TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, ASB TREASURY.

THE MONEY IS USED FOR FIELD TRIPS, SPIRIT DAY PRIZES, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES.

WALKATHON BROUGHT IN OVER $2,000.

>> ALSO ON OCTOBER MIDDLE SCHOOL ASB HAD A FALSE SPIRIT WEEK.

THE DAY IS CONSISTED OF COSTUME DAY, SPORTS DAY, PIONEER DAY, AND FAIRY TALE DAY.

IN NOVEMBER, MIDDLE-SCHOOL ARRANGED A FOOD DRIVE.

WE DONATED ALL THE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE NORTH COUNTY COMMUNITY FOOD BANK.

TOTAL WE DONATED 319 POUNDS OF KANT BOXED AND PACKAGED FOOD.

WE HOPE TO DO ANOTHER FOOD DROP IN THE SPRING.

>> IN THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS, ASB HAS BEEN PLANNING A FIELD TRIP ON THE SHELL AFTER PRAIRIE TRAIN.

THIS PAST FRIDAY THAT THAT FIELD TRIP TOOK PLACE, IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS AND IT'S SOMETHING WE HOPE TO DO AGAIN IN THE FUTURE.

AFTER THE TRAIN RIDE, STUDENTS WERE OFFERED APPLE CIDER AND HOT CHOCOLATE OUT OF THE TRAIN STATION.

THE TRAIN RIDE CONSISTED OF A SCENIC ROUTE THROUGH THE WOODS SURROUNDING THE TOWN OF YAKEL.

>> THIS WEEK IS ALSO EXCITING BECAUSE IT IS OUR SECOND SPIRIT WEEK THIS YEAR.

SCHOOL SPIRIT IS APPARENT AT CAM AND STUDENTS ENJOY HAVING SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO EACH SEASON.

ALSO ON FRIDAY MIDDLE SCHOOLS HAVING OUR FIRST EVER PEP ASSEMBLY WITH CONTEST FOR STUDENTS.

AT CAM WE WANT TO COME TOGETHER AGAIN AFTER THE COVID YEARS NOT ONLY AS A SCHOOL BUT ALSO AS A COMMUNITY.

>> FROM JANUARY 9TH-20TH ASB IS HOLDING A CLOTHING DRIVE.

THERE WILL BE BOXES PLACED IN EACH CLASSROOM WHERE STUDENTS CAN BRING THEIR DONATIONS.

ALL DONATIONS WILL BE GOING TO THE GETTING CLOSET, WHICH IS LOCATED IN VANCOUVER.

>> ASB HAS ENJOYED PLANNING FUNDRAISERS AND ACTIVITIES FOR OUR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY.

WE APPRECIATE ALL YOU DO.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND TIME.

>> LADIES, THAT'S AN IMPRESSIVE LIST.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

>> QUESTION MAYBE A COMMENT TO APPRECIATE OUR FIST MIDDLE SCHOOL PRESENTATION HERE WE REALLY ENGAGE THAT, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU THINK YOU NEED TO BE APPROVED FOR [INAUDIBLE]?

>> WELL, I KNOW FOR ME EVEN AS A PRIMARY STUDENT, WHEN THE BOARD MEMBERS WOULD COME INTO THE CLASSROOM AND I REMEMBER [NOISE] HAVING THEM BE INTRODUCED AND BEING LIKE THAT'S WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE, THE PEOPLE WHO ARE BEHIND IT ALL.

THAT WAS REALLY NICE EVEN FOR ME.

I REMEMBER BEING IN SECOND GRADE AND GOING HOME AND TELLING MY MOM, GUESS WHAT? THE BOARD GAME TO CLASS TODAY.

THAT'S REALLY NICE IF THAT'S A POSSIBILITY, I KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE STUDENTS TO KNOW WHO'S BEHIND ALL THE DECISIONS THAT ARE BEING MADE.

>> GREAT. THANK YOU

>> RICARDO, YOU HAD A QUESTION.

>> YEAH. OUT OF ALL THE SPIRIT DAYS THAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING, WHICH ONE'S YOUR GUY'S FAVORITE?

>> [BACKGROUND] I DON'T HAVE A PERSONAL FAVORITE, BUT I KNOW THAT.

>> I HAVE FAVORITE. MY FAVORITE ONE WAS FAIRYTALE DAY IT WAS ACTUALLY MY IDEA.

THAT'S PROBABLY WHY I WROTE MY NAME.

[LAUGHTER] THAT WAS A SUCCESS.

WE DID A GROUP DRESS UP THING, OUR GROUP OF FRIENDS DID.

I WAS REALLY VOUCHING FOR HUMPTY DUMPTY.

WE ENDED UP DOING HANSEL AND GRETEL AND IT WAS REALLY FUN.

>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? I REALLY LIKED THE APPROACH WHERE YOU GUYS DO IT TOGETHER AND SWITCHED OFF. NICE JOB.

>> THANK YOU.

[APPLAUSE]

>> HI AGAIN. I'M TAYLIN MANDAGUIT AND I'M PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL'S ASB PRESIDENT.

I FEEL YOU GUYS GET SICK OF ME, I'M ALWAYS HERE.

>> WE DO NOT.

>> BUT NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO COME, I GUESS IT'LL BE ME TODAY.

I'D WANT TO UPDATE YOU GUYS ON A FEW THINGS THAT ARE GOING ON AT PRAIRIE AND ALSO TALK ABOUT SOME THINGS THAT ARE COMING UP.

THE FIRST THING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WAS OUR WINTER CARNIVAL, WHICH TOOK PLACE LAST WEEK, SATURDAY.

IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS.

I WAS REALLY, REALLY PROUD OF IT HAVING TURNED OUT.

WE HAD A TON OF PEOPLE FROM OUR COMMUNITY COME IN, FAMILIES, KIDS FROM OUR SCHOOL, AND JUST A BUNCH OF RANDOM PEOPLE WHO DON'T EVEN REALLY LIVE IN OUR DIRECT AREA BUT I GUESS THEY FOUND OUT ABOUT IT.

[00:20:02]

IT WAS A REALLY BIG HIT, I THINK.

I'VE GOTTEN A LOT OF POSITIVE FEEDBACK OFF OF IT.

WE WERE ABLE TO DONATE HUNDREDS OF TOYS TO KIDS, AS WELL AS WINTER ESSENTIALS FOR THEIR PARENTS.

WE EVEN HAD SOME LEFTOVER, SO WE WERE ABLE TO DONATE THE REST OF THAT TO FCRC SO THEY CAN DISTRIBUTE THAT OUT TO OTHER PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY? I DON'T KNOW, I'M JUST REALLY PROUD.

I CRIED THE DAY OF THE EVENT BECAUSE IT JUST ALL CAME TOGETHER AND IT WAS JUST REALLY NICE TO SEE HOW NOT JUST OUR ASB CLASS OR MYSELF AND ADMIN BANDED TOGETHER TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

BUT OUR ENTIRE SCHOOL CLUBS, STUDENTS, TEACHERS WERE ALL REALLY ABLE TO JUST COME TOGETHER AND DO SOMETHING FOR OUR COMMUNITY THAT DIDN'T NECESSARILY BENEFIT US, BUT WE'RE ABLE TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON THESE KIDS AND THESE PARENTS.

I WAS REALLY HAPPY WITH HOW THAT TURNED OUT.

ANOTHER COMMUNITY EVENT THAT WE JUST PUT ON WAS FALCON FOREST, WHICH WAS LAST WEEK FRIDAY.

WINTER CARNIVAL WAS TWO WEEKS AGO, TIME JUST GOES BY REALLY FAST.

LAST WEEK SATURDAY WAS FALLING FOR US THOUGH, WHICH IT'S OUR THIRD YEAR DOING THAT EVENT.

IT'S MORE TO TRUNK OR TREE EXCEPT CLUBS CAN DECORATE CHRISTMAS TREES.

PEOPLE CAN COME THROUGH AND VOTE ON THEIR FAVORITE ONE BY DONATING CANNED GOODS.

WE HAD TONS OF CANNED FOOD DONATED TO US.

I BELIEVE WE GAVE ALL THAT TO FCRC TO BE ABLE TO DO DISTRIBUTE OUT TO THE COMMUNITY AS WELL.

AGAIN, GOT A LOT OF POSITIVE FEEDBACK.

I THINK PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY ARE JUST REALLY HUNGRY FOR THAT INVOLVEMENT.

WE'VE BEEN DOING OUR BEST TO TRY AND MAKE SURE NOT JUST CONSIDER SCHOOL ARE GETTING INVOLVED AT PRAIRIE BUT ACROSS THE BOARD, EVERYONE IS ABLE TO GET INVOLVED.

COMING UP THIS WEEK WE HAVE OUR WINTER SPIRIT WEEK, WHICH I SAW A TON OF PARTICIPATION.

IT WAS PAJAMA DAY TODAY OBVIOUSLY.

[LAUGHTER] WHICH IS EVERYONE'S FAVORITE DAY.

BUT WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO HAVE MORE STUDENT INPUT ON DECISIONS THAT ARE MADE.

INSTEAD OF JUST HAVING ASPE VOTE ON SPIRIT WEEK THEME DAYS, WE GET TOGETHER A LIST OF ABOUT 20 DIFFERENT IDEAS THAT WE GET FROM PULLS ON OUR SOCIAL MEDIA.

WE PUT THAT ONTO A GOOGLE FORM AND SENT OUT TO THE ENTIRE STUDENT BODY AND EVERYONE IS ABLE TO VOTE ON THEIR TOP THREE.

THEN WE JUST TAKE THE TOP 5 DAYS FROM THAT LIST AND ORGANIZE IT ACROSS THE WEEK.

WE'VE BEEN GETTING A LITTLE BIT MORE POSITIVE FEEDBACK.

I KNOW IT'S ALWAYS ROUGH FOR US, SO WE ALWAYS GET NEGATIVE FEEDBACK.

BUT I FEEL LIKE THERE'S BEEN MINIMAL NEGATIVE FEEDBACK.

I'M HOPING. I DON'T KNOW.

IT'S REALLY TRICKY TO FIGURE IT OUT, BUT WE'RE STILL TRYING TO WORK AROUND THAT AND DO SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE'S GOING TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE DAY THAT THEY ENJOY.

THAT'S GOING ON THIS WEEK AS WELL AS OUR WINTER SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES RECOGNITION ASSEMBLY.

WHICH THE ONLY THING I REALLY WANTED TO SAY ON THAT IS THAT WE'RE TRYING TO RECOGNIZE MORE THAN JUST OUR SPORTS.

I'VE BEEN TALKING TO RICARDO LOT ABOUT RECOGNIZING THE ARTS MORE AS WELL AS JUST OTHER CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS AT PRAIRIE.

WE'RE TAKING JUST OUR WINTER SPORTS RECOGNITION AND TRYING TO CHANGE THAT A LITTLE BIT SO IT'S MORE DIVERSE AND WE'RE RECOGNIZING OTHER GROUPS.

BECAUSE EVERYONE IS ACHIEVING THINGS AT PRAIRIE AND WE JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE RECOGNIZING THAT ACROSS THE BOARD.

THEN LOOKING TO THE FUTURE THE NEXT THING I HAVE BEEN TALKING TO ASB AS WELL AS BIPOC, WHICH UNOFFICIALLY LEAD ABOUT IS THE MLK ASSEMBLY, WHICH IS GOING TO BE ONE OF OUR FIRST THINGS THAT WE HANDLE ONCE WE COME BACK FROM WINTER BREAK.

BIPOC, LIKE I SAID, OR MULTICULTURAL CLUB, IS TRYING TO GET REALLY INVOLVED IN THE PLANNING OF PUTTING ON OF THIS ASSEMBLY.

SIMILARLY TO HOW RTC TOOK OVER OUR VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY.

JUST BECAUSE IN ASB, WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS AT OUR SCHOOL FEEL RECOGNIZED.

HELPING TO UPLIFT OTHER GROUPS WHO MAY BE MORE PERTAIN TO THE EVENT THAT WE'RE PUTTING ON, TRYING TO GET THEM MORE INVOLVED SO THAT ASB STUDENTS AREN'T MAKING ALL THE DECISIONS AND MAKING SURE THAT PEOPLE HAVE PUT ON EVENTS THAT PERTAIN TO THEIR DEMOGRAPHICS.

BECAUSE WE'RE TRYING TO JUST CELEBRATE MORE DIVERSITY AT PRAIRIE, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE IT'S GONE A LOT MORE DIVERSE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS.

WE'RE JUST TRYING TO BRANCH OUT AND WORK WITH OTHER STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS TO HAVE OUR EVENTS BE MORE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE WHOLE STUDENT BODY.

THAT'S MY WHOLE THING.

>> ANY QUESTIONS FOR TAYLIN?

>> I'M SO GLAD YOU CAME TIME BEFORE AND PUSHED FOR YOUR [INAUDIBLE] I'VE GOT TO SEE THAT I SHOULD KNOW.

YOUR ORGANIZATION OF ALL THE DIFFERENT CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS UNDER PRIARIE'S TO GET THEM TO BUY INTO THIS DISTRIBUTION PRINCIPLE.

I'M GLAD YOU WERE REWARDED WITH GOOD TURNOUT.

THAT WAS A VERY GOOD TURN OUT.

>> THANK YOU.

>> TURN OUT IS FINE THERE. AGAIN, THANK YOU.

THE OTHER CAN SPEAK [INAUDIBLE] NUMBERS FOR HOSTING MYSELF [INAUDIBLE].

[00:25:01]

THAT WAS A REALLY GOOD CONVERSATION AND SO WE GREATLY APPRECIATE THE ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM [INAUDIBLE] PLEASE EXPRESS OUR GRATITUDE. THANKS.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN FOR COMING OUT. WE APPRECIATE.

>> OUR PLEASURE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU [APPLAUSE].

DO I HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL ASB REPRESENTATIVES IN THE AUDIENCE? HOW ABOUT OUR OWN STUDENTS?

>> I HAVE A FEW THINGS FROM BATTLE GROUND.

LIKE THE OTHER SCHOOLS, WE HAVE A LOT OF THINGS HAPPENING AS YOU'RE TRANSITIONING INTO THE WINTER BREAK.

THIS LAST SATURDAY WE HAD OUR WINTER FOR MORE AND I WAS REALLY EXCITING, WAS REALLY FUN.

IT WAS OBVIOUSLY A MUCH MORE GENERAL THAN HOMECOMING, BUT AGAIN, IT WAS LIKE IT'S MORE OF A QUESTION ORIENTED DANCE.

IT WAS JUST A REALLY FUN EXPERIENCE VIA SOLD LITTLE POLAROIDS AND HAD THEM $4 A PIECE SO EVERYONE COULD TAKE HOME THERE A COPY OF THE FLUORIDE.

WE'RE JUST NICE ALTERNATIVE FROM ORDERING THOSE PHOTOS ONLINE.

THIS WEEK, ALMOST EVERY OTHER SCHOOL, WE HAVE OUR SPIRIT WEEK AND TODAY IS PJ DAY OF COURSE, BUT WE'RE TRYING TO INCORPORATE MORE OPTIONS THAT EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE IN.

THIS WEEK WE ARE INCORPORATING EASY OUT DAYS.

TODAY IT WAS PJ DAY OR AS AN EASY OUT IT WAS WHERE GRAY.

WE'RE HAVING A COLORS AS OPTIONS ON TOP OF THOSE OTHER OPTIONS IF THAT MAKES SENSE.

TOMORROW WE HAVE UGLY SWEATER DAY, BUT AS AN EASY OUT WE HAVE JUST WEAR BLACK.

JUST GIVING PEOPLE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE AND STILL SHOW THEIR SPIRIT IN MORE SUBTLE WAYS ESPECIALLY BECAUSE SPIRIT DAYS IN GENERAL ARE SOMETIMES SO HARD TO GET THE MATERIALS TO PARTICIPATE IN.

ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S THE MORE FESTIVE TIMES OF THE YEAR, YOU HAVE TO GO OUT AND BUY THINGS AND SOME PEOPLE JUST IT'S HARDER FOR THEM. ESPECIALLY THIS WEEK.

WE'RE KEEPING IT VERY EASY BECAUSE NO ONE REALLY WANTS TO GO ALL OUT THIS WEEK IS THE LAST WEEK BEFORE WINTER BREAK.

EVERYONE IS PRETTY MELLOW.

BUT THIS FRIDAY WE HAVE OUR CHANCE TO DANCE, WHICH IS FOR OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION KIDS.

WE'RE PUTTING THAT WITH ASB AND WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT, WORKING ON THAT RIGHT NOW.

ON DECEMBER 3RD, WE HAD OUR SKY VIEW OF JAZZ FESTIVAL, WHICH BOTH PRAIRIE AND BATTLE GROUND PARTICIPATED IN AND BATTLE GROUND TOOK THE FIRST PLACE.

[LAUGHTER] ON THE BAND THING AT SRI LOT BY ALBERTSONS AND THAT I THINK SOLD OUT ALL THE WAY.

WE'VE MADE A LOT OF PROFIT ON THAT.

THAT WAS GREAT. IF ANYONE BUT CHOOSE FROM THAT, THANK YOU SO MUCH WITH THAT.

RIGHT NOW, WE'RE DOING A FOOD DRIVE AND IT'S POINTING NORTH COUNTY FOOD BANK, WHO IS ALMOST COMPLETELY OUT OF FOOD AND THEY HAD TO CLOSE THEIR PANTRY DOORS DURING THE WEEK OF THANKSGIVING, SO THEY'RE IN DESPERATE NEED.

IF ANY OF YOU GUYS WANT TO BRING SOME FOOD TO BATTLE GROUND AND DONATE VIA NHS FOOD DRIVE, THAT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

IT'S A CLASS COMPETITION RIGHT NOW.

WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A BREAKFAST PARTY AFTER WINTER BREAK FOR THE TOP THREE CLASSES THAT DONATE TO JUST GIVE SOME INCENTIVE TO HELP OUT THERE.

WE'RE ALSO DOING A TOY DRIVE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE IQ CREDIT UNION AND KGWF ALGORITHMS. THERE'S SOME EXCITING THINGS GOING ON THERE.

ALSO JUST OUT OF THE ORDINARY, WE DID A SMASH BROS TOURNAMENT ABOUT A GUN.

THAT WAS [LAUGHTER] A VERY FUN THING JUST TO KEEP EVERYONE'S SPIRITS UP AS THE WEATHER GETS COLD.

>> WHO WON THAT ONE?

>> THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION.

>> PRAIRIE STUDENT.

>> REALLY? [LAUGHTER]

>> WE HAVE LOST SKY VIEW, BUT [LAUGHTER] OVER PRAIRIE, ACTUALLY.

I HAVE A LOT OF THINGS ACTUALLY.

WE JUST HAD A CHRISTMAS GIG FOR OUR JAZZ WON AT THE CHURCH RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO PRAIRIE.

THAT WENT REALLY WELL.

WE GOT THIRD PLACE IN A TIE WITH SKY VIEW AND WE TECHNICALLY LOST DUE TO SIGHT READING.

BUT HAWKINSON.

[LAUGHTER] THEN WE HAVE THE WINTER CARNIVAL THAT WENT REALLY WELL.

I KNOW A BUNCH OF CLUBS DECIDED TO JOIN IN AND THAT WAS REALLY GREAT BAND.

WE DID KARAOKE FOR FUN.

WE GOT REALLY GOOD TURNOUT.

MAPLE GROVE, THE DINING EVENT WAS REALLY NICE AND I FELT I WAS HAVING A LOT OF FUN INTERACTING WITH THE THIRD GRADERS.

VERY INTERESTING.

THEY HAVE A LOT TO SAY. IT'S REALLY FUNNY TO SEE WHAT COMES OUT OF THEIR MOUTH.

FUCKING FOREST. IT WENT REALLY WELL.

WE GOT A LOT OF CANNED FOOD.

UNIFIED, ENDED UP WINNING AND THAT WAS REALLY NICE.

WE HAVE A BAND STUDENT WHO MADE IT INTO THE OLD NORTHWEST HONOR BAND,

[00:30:06]

WHICH IS REALLY IMPRESSIVE.

THEN WE HAVE ANOTHER STUDENT WHO WON SMASH BROS TOURNAMENT, AS WE WERE SAYING.

THEN, OUR AP MUSIC THEORY CLASS WON OUR TOY DRIVE COMPETITION.

WE GOT POPSICLES.

THAT WAS REALLY FUN TO JUST CHOW DOWN ON.

WE MET WITH DANNY, SHELLY, ASB, AND THEN MR. DRAKE.

WE TALKED A LOT ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND THE SCHOOLS, AND THEN A LOT ABOUT SECURITY AND HOW DO WE MAKE OUR SCHOOLS MORE SECURE? IT WAS REALLY BENEFICIAL CONVERSATION THAT I THINK WE REALLY NEEDED TO HAVE.

RIVER HOME LINK JUST FINISHED THEIR PRODUCTION OF ANY JUNIOR OVER AT PRAIRIE.

THAT WAS REALLY NICE TO SEE.

THEN OUR WINTER BAND AND CHOIR CONCERT IS ON THE 15TH.

I WOULD ENCOURAGE ALL OF YOU GUYS TO COME BECAUSE OUR BAND PROGRAM IS AMAZING, I GUESS.

[LAUGHTER] BUT YES.

I WOULD DEFINITELY ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO JOIN IN ON THAT.

>> WHAT TIME IS IT AT?

>> I BELIEVE IT'S AT 07:00

>> I BELIEVE IT'S AT 07:00.YES.

>> YOU BELIEVE THE BATTLEGROUNDS, DAN CARTER IS TOMORROW ALSO AROUND 07:00? SOMETHING LIKE THAT? KEEP THAT IN MIND.

>> WHEN SHE STOPPED TALKING.

[LAUGHTER]

>> I HAVE THE TALKING STICKS.

[LAUGHTER] I HAD A PERFECT SEGUE.

[LAUGHTER]

>> IS A LOT OF YOU GUYS, GOOD JOB.

WELL, THAT MOVES US ON TO COMMITTEE REPORTS AND WE WOULD START WITH THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE. DIRECTOR [INAUDIBLE]

>> NOTHING TO REPORT RIGHT NOW.

>> THAT WOULD TAKES US TO THE AUDIT COMMITTEE.

I WAS NOT AT THE COMMITTEE MEETING, BUT DIRECTOR [INAUDIBLE] SENT ME THE REPORT.

SHE AND THE STAFF, ALONG WITH MICHELLE SCOTT, REVIEWED THE VOUCHERS, THE PAYROLLS, SUPERINTENDENT AND BOARD BUDGETS, EXPENSES FOR NOVEMBER, AND THE SUPERINTENDENTS TIME-SHEET.

THEY FOUND EVERYTHING IN ORDER, AND THEN THE COMMITTEE WAS ALSO PRESENTED NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE PAST FISCAL YEAR FROM SEPTEMBER OF '21 TO AUGUST OF '22, AND THEN OUR NEXT MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 5TH.

THAT WAS THEIR REPORT.

NEXT WOULD BE THE BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION AND I DO NOT HAVE A REPORT FOR THEM TONIGHT. OH, I DO.

THEY HAVE A RAFFLE THAT THEY'RE DOING.

THEY'RE LOOKING FOR 40 DONATIONS OF $25 EACH, AND IT'S LIMITED TO 40 AND THE PRIZE IF YOU SHOULD WIN IT'S AT $800 VALUE, IT'S POLARIS GPS.

I'M SURE I'LL SLAUGHTER THAT, BUT IF YOU HIKE, YOU PROBABLY KNOW WHAT THAT IS, AND IT'S A GOOD DEAL, ANYWAYS.

IF ANYBODY'S INTERESTED, CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSITE, VGEF.ORG.

DO WE HAVE ANYTHING FOR WIAA?

>> WE DON'T HAVE [INAUDIBLE].

>> GOOD, THANK YOU. THEN ARE THERE ANY UPDATES ON WSSDA?

>> I THINK SO. THIS IS FROM THE TRUST LANDS TRANSFER COMMITTEE.

[OVERLAPPING] THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN REPORTING ALL ALONG,

[00:35:01]

BUT THE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION WHO COLLABORATED ON THIS BILL LEGISLATION THAT WILL GO BEFORE THE LEGISLATORS THIS YEAR TO TRY TO GET APPROVED.

WOULD SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGE HOW WE GENERATE MONEY FOR ITS NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AND IT WOULD MOVE A LOT OF THE BURDEN FROM TIMBER HARVEST, WHICH IS VERY UNPREDICTABLE AND GENERALLY DECLINING TO MORE OF THE GENERAL BUDGET.

THEN SINCE THE TIMBER HARVESTS OF COURSE.

>> OR YOU GO TO OTHER.

>> LOTS OF VOTING, PLEASE PASS THIS.

DON'T KNOW HOW TO GO AND LEGISLATION, I GUESS, SO I CAN USE AS MANY VOICES AS POSSIBLE AND FIND A WAY TO GET A COPY TO EVERYBODY SO THEY'VE GOT IT.

THIS IS ESSENTIALLY THE TALKING POINTS.

IF YOU DO GET A CHANCE TO EITHER EMAIL OR TALK TO ONE OF THE LEGISLATORS ABOUT OUR POSITIONS, THIS WOULD BE A GREAT ONE TO INCLUDE IN THERE, PARTICULARLY KNOWING THAT WE ARE LOOKING AT POTENTIAL BOND ACTIVITY IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

ANY QUESTIONS ON IT?

>> [INAUDIBLE].

>> THESE ARE STATE OWNED LANDS, MOSTLY THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, OF WHICH MANY ACRES WHICH HAVE BEEN DEDICATED TO WHEN THEY GENERATE MONEY, THAT GOES TO A FUND IN THE LEGISLATURE THAT HELPS US BUILD SCHOOL BUILDINGS.

THAT FUND HAS BEEN DWINDLING GREATLY FOR THE LAST DECADE, ALMOST TWO DECADES, AND THIS IS A PROPOSAL TO TURN THAT AROUND AND FUND OUR SCHOOL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION MORE GENEROUSLY.

IF YOU WANTED THE OTHER ONE, I GUESS I'LL JUST GIVE IT TO YOU.

IN YOUR DOCUMENTS, IF YOU WANT TO HAVE IT, THIS IS WSSDA'S LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES FOR 2023, THE SHORT FORM, AND THAT'S ANOTHER ONE IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO BACK THE LEGISLATORS WHEN THE TIME COMES TO HAVE THIS HANDY AS YOU'VE GOTTEN THOSE.

>> THANK YOU. NEXT ON THE LIST, WE HAVE OUR TOURS COMMITTEE.

JUST A REMINDER FOR EVERYBODY, WE HAVE GROUP 1 IS SCHEDULED UP JANUARY 13TH.

SINCE WE WON'T MEET AFTER TONIGHT UNTIL NEXT YEAR.

THEN WE HAVE GROUP 2 AND GROUP 3 ON JANUARY 20TH.

JUST SOMETHING TO BE AWARE OF FOR YOUR CALENDARS.

THEN, DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER DIRECTOR REPORTS THAT ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

>> I'LL SHARE THAT I WENT TO THE FINE DINING EVENT WHICH WAS AT MAPLE GROVE PRIMARY.

I GOT TO HAVE A NICE MEAL WITH THE THIRD GRADERS, I GOT TO SIT WITH CADE AND WITH BRIELLE AND WITH SHELLEY.

I THINK MARY WAS THERE AND SEVERAL OF THE ADMINISTRATION WERE THERE IN ATTENDANCE AS WELL.

I NOTICED THAT AT LEAST AT OUR TABLE, THE CHILDREN DIDN'T EAT THE FOOD AS MUCH AS THE ADULTS DID.

IT WAS MORE GEARED TOWARD AN ADULT PALETTE AS OPPOSED TO A CHILDREN'S PALETTE.

ALTHOUGH CADE REALLY LIKED BREAD.

[LAUGHTER] ANYWAY, IT WAS REALLY A GOOD TIME, IT'S NICE TO BE ABLE TO MINGLE AND BE WITH THE KIDS.

>> IT WAS IMPRESSIVE THEY TRIED ANYTHING, BUT IT WAS DEFINITELY [INAUDIBLE]. [LAUGHTER]

>> EVERYBODY HAD A TABLE WHERE THEY HAD A STUDENT WHO JUST ATE THE BREAD.

[LAUGHTER]

>> ANY OTHER REPORTS?

>> I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SMASH BROS TOURNAMENT, WHICH IS A NEW PHRASE FOR ME AND [LAUGHTER] I LIKED THAT ECHO, WHAT RICARDO AND ACTUALLY [INAUDIBLE] SAID ABOUT IT WAS REAL OBVIOUS THAT THERE'S A NICHE FOR THAT GROUP OF STUDENTS, AND THEY HAD THEIR SCHOOL UNIFORMS ON AND THEY WERE CHEERING FOR EACH OTHER AND THEY WERE ENGAGED AND INVOLVED AND IT WAS NEW TO ME,

[00:40:01]

BUT IT WAS GREAT THAT THERE'S ONE MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR STUDENTS TO BE ENGAGED IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES.

>> I WILL REMISS NOT TO MENTION THE BATTLEGROUND ON THE ARENA OF BASKETBALL.

[LAUGHTER] THAT WOULD NOW BE AGENDA.

>> IS THAT ON THE AGENDA? [LAUGHTER]

>> GOOD MORNING TO YOU [OVERLAPPING] [LAUGHTER]

>> SO WITH THAT, DO YOU HAVE ANY NICE THINGS TO SAY? [LAUGHTER].

I WILL SHARE THAT I ATTENDED ALONG WITH DIRECTOR WATRIN, WE WENT TO THE CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

GREAT CONVERSATION, GREAT WORKSHOP THROUGH FACILITY NEEDS IN SMALL GROUPS.

I REALLY FELT WE ALL HAD A QUESTION.

WE STARTED WITH IT AND WE SWITCH TO THE QUESTIONS, WHICH TABLES? I REALLY JUST FELT EVERYONE WAS SO ENGAGED AND ADDED TO THE LIST AND WAS ABLE TO BUILD ON WHAT OTHERS HAD STARTED.

IT WAS REALLY GREAT I WALKED AWAY FEELING GOOD WORK WAS DONE AND THAT'S HOW I FELT EVERY TIME I GO TO ONE OF THOSE MEETINGS.

IT WAS GOOD.

ANY OTHER THINGS TO SHARE? ALRIGHT, WELL, I THINK THAT WRAPS IT UP FOR DIRECTORS REPORTS

[8. Superintendent and Staff Updates]

AND I WILL TURN IT OVER TO SUPERINTENDENT WATERS.

>> THANK YOU. FIRST OF ALL CONGRATULATIONS, JACKIE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY.

ROB THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK ON THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE.

>> YOU ARE WELCOME.

>> WE APPRECIATE YOU GREATLY.

>> [OVERLAPPING] SHE'LL DO A GREAT JOB.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I ALSO WANTED TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY AS WE ENTER INTO THE HOLIDAY SEASON TO WISH THE BOARD HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND TO WISH ALL OF OUR STAFF A VERY HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO TO SERVE THIS COMMUNITY AND TO MAKE BATTLEGROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS A GREAT PLACE TO BE.

THANK YOU STAFF VERY MUCH.

I HAD SOME OF THE SAME TOPICS THAT WERE ALREADY COVERED, SO I WON'T GO INTO IT.

I JUST WANT TO RECOGNIZE MS. KAYLEE MILOSEVIC.

IT WAS HER CLASS, HER THIRD GRADE CLASS THAT WON THE CONTEST, WHICH ENABLED THEM TO DO THE FINE DINING.

THE WAY THE CLASS IS CHOSEN IS THAT THEY SCORE POINTS OVER A MONTH LONG PERIOD FOR THEIR MANNERS IN THE CAFETERIA.

THESE THIRD GRADERS HAD THE BEST MANNERS OF ALL THE THIRD GRADERS AT MAPLE GROVE AND SO THEY GOT TO WIN THE PRIZE.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. MILOSEVIC'S CLASS AND ALL ITS STUDENTS.

I ALSO WANT TO RECOGNIZE THE E-SPORTS.

SMASH BROS WAS OUTSTANDING.

AGAIN, JUST TO SAY, THANK YOU TO PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL AND THANK YOU TO BATTLEGROUND HIGH SCHOOL FOR HOSTING US WHEN WE CAME IN TO TALK TO THE LEADERSHIP, MR. DRAKE AND I AND MS. WHITNEY WERE TALKING, WE LOVED THOSE EXPERIENCES, WOULD LIKE TO EXPAND THOSE EXPERIENCES OUT TO OUR ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS.

I THINK WHEN WE RETURN FROM BREAK, WE'RE GOING TO MEET WITH RIVER HOME LENGTH AND CAM STUDENTS SO THAT WE CAN GET A PERSPECTIVE OF OUR ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS.

THEN LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I ALSO WANTED TO, I GUESS THAT IS MY LAST ONE.

THE LAST THING THAT I WANTED TO DO WAS AS I DON'T KNOW IF THE BOARD IS AWARE.

I MENTIONED IT TO MARK AND JACKIE AT OUR LAST BOARD PREP MEETING.

BUT WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING AT SEPARATING OUT THE ONLINE PROGRAM AT RIVER HOME LINK FROM RIVER HOMELAND.

THE REASON WE ARE DOING THAT ARE PLENTIFUL.

I AM GOING TO CALL UP OUR DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP FOR OUR HIGH SCHOOLS AND ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS, MR. TRAVIS STRAIGHT.

TRAVIS IS GOING TO PROVIDE YOU WITH SOME BASELINE.

I'M GOING TO ASK YOU TO MAKE ANY DECISIONS TODAY JUST TO GIVE YOU SOME GENERAL INFORMATION AND SO YOU'RE AWARE AS WE MOVE FORWARD.

>> THANK YOU. TED YOUR MIC IS OFF.

[NOISE] AS DANNY MENTIONED,

[00:45:06]

AND I'LL I'LL GO INTO FURTHER DETAIL.

OUR CURRENT REALITY IN THIS DISTRICT IS WE ACTUALLY HAVE THREE OPTIONS FOR ONLINE SCHOOL.

WE HAVE RIVER ONLINE, WHICH IS UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF RIVER HOME LINK.

RIVER ONLINE IS NOT ITS OWN SCHOOL.

IT'S A PROGRAM WITHIN RIVER HOME LINK.

WE ALSO HAVE PRAIRIE ONLINE, WHICH AGAIN, PRAIRIE ONLINE IS NOT A SEPARATE SCHOOL.

IT FALLS UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.

BUT WHAT THAT PHYSICALLY LOOKS LIKE IS A STUDENT OR STUDENTS COULD TAKE ONE OR TWO CLASSES UP TO THREE CLASSES AT PRAIRIE.

PHYSICALLY AT PRAIRIE, BUT ACCESSING IT THROUGH AN ONLINE OPTION.

THAT OPTION EXISTS AT PRAIRIE.

THEN THERE'S A SIMILAR OPPORTUNITY AT BATTLEGROUND, CALLED BATTLEGROUND ONLINE.

AGAIN, IT FALLS UNDER BATTLEGROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

STUDENTS TAKE CLASSES.

THE PHYSICAL SETTING IS IN THE LIBRARY, AND THERE ARE CERTIFICATED STAFF MEMBERS AT BOTH PRAIRIE AND BATTLEGROUND WHO OVERSEE THE STUDENTS THERE.

WHAT WE ARE PROPOSING IS TO CREATE ONE ONLINE PROGRAM FOR THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THERE'S A FEW MAIN REASONS TO DO THIS.

ONE, IT ALLOWS RIVER ONLINE TO GROW AND EXPAND IN WAYS THAT ARE A CHALLENGE FOR THEM TO DO UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF RIVER HOME LINK.

THAT'S THROUGH NO ONE'S FAULT.

WHEN RIVER ONLINE BEGAN BACK IN 2013 AND 14, THERE WAS ACTUALLY 11 STUDENTS WHO ACCESSED CLASSES ONLINE.

WITH COVID THAT NUMBER INCREASED DRAMATICALLY.

THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS WHO ARE ACCESSING CLASSES THROUGH RIVER ONLINE, OFTENTIMES LOOK A LOT DIFFERENT THAN THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS THROUGH RIVER HOME LINK.

AS WE KNOW, RIVER HOME LINK IS A PARENT PARTNERED PROGRAM AND WITH A LONG HISTORY AND A STRONG CULTURE.

THERE HAS BEEN SOME CHALLENGES JUST TRYING TO HAVE TWO SCHOOLS SERVE STUDENTS UNDER THE SAME UMBRELLA.

RIVER ONLINE COULD BE VIEWED AS THAT TEENAGER WHO HAS EXPANDED THEIR WINGS A LITTLE BIT AND THE NEEDS, OFTENTIMES MAKE IT CHALLENGING TO FALL UNDER THE SAME ROOF AS RIVER HOME LINK.

THE FIRST PURPOSE OF SEPARATING WOULD BE TO ALLOW RIVER ONLINE TO CREATE ITS OWN CULTURE AND SET ITS OWN PATH.

WHILE IN ITS SAME PHYSICAL LOCATION, WHICH IS AT RIVER HOME LINK, AND THAT PHYSICAL LOCATION WILL NOT CHANGE.

THE SECOND REASON IS TO PROVIDE CLARITY AS A SCHOOL DISTRICT.

ANY STUDENT WHO TAKES CLASSES ONLINE IN THE BATTLEGROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT WOULD ACCESS THOSE CLASSES THROUGH ONE FUNNEL, SO TO SPEAK, ONE AVENUE, AND THAT WOULD BE A NEW ONLINE SCHOOL.

FINALLY, IT ALLOWS US TO EXPLORE THE IDEA OF BEING A MULTI-DISTRICT ONLINE PROGRAM.

DISTRICTS FROM THROUGHOUT THE STATE HAVE THIS MULTI-DISTRICT LICENSE AND WHAT IT WOULD ALLOW IS STUDENTS FROM HONESTLY ALL ACROSS THE STATE OF WASHINGTON TO ACCESS THEIR ONLINE CLASSES THROUGH BATTLEGROUND ONLINE ACADEMY.

WE'LL TALK ABOUT NAMES IN JUST A SECOND.

THIS LOOKS LIKE IT HAPPENS ALREADY.

THERE ARE STUDENTS IN THE BATTLEGROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT WHO ARE ACCESSING THEIR CLASSES THROUGH OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON.

THERE IS A LOSS OF FTE WHEN STUDENTS TAKE CLASSES OUTSIDE OF BATTLEGROUND.

FOR THOSE THREE MAIN REASONS, WE FEEL LIKE THIS WOULD BE A POSITIVE CHANGE.

EVERY PERSON I'VE TALKED TO ON THE BACKSIDE OF THINGS.

THE REGISTRARS BECAUSE ANYTIME YOU SHARE STUDENTS BETWEEN TWO ENTITIES, THAT BECOMES VERY CHALLENGING.

WE DON'T FEEL THAT THE STUDENTS WOULD ACTUALLY EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGES IN HOW THEY'RE ACCESSING THEIR EDUCATION.

THE SCHOOL NAME MAY CHANGE, BUT THE PHYSICAL LOCATION OF RIVER ONLINE WOULD REMAIN THE SAME.

STUDENTS WOULD STILL BE ABLE TO SIT AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL AND AT BATTLEGROUND HIGH SCHOOL TO ACCESS ONLINE CLASSES.

THEY WOULD BE A SHARED STUDENT WITH THIS NEW ONLINE PROGRAM.

SOME OF THE NEXT STEPS, THE FUN THINGS WOULD BE AROUND NAMING OF THE SCHOOL.

I'M JUST GOING TO NAME THE OPTIONS THAT THE STAFF AT RIVER ONLINE HAS COME UP WITH.

THIS IS NOT TO TAKE A VOTE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

I'M LOOKING AT SHELLEY AND DANNY.

OKAY. THESE NAMES, THE FIVE RECOMMENDATIONS COMING FROM THE RIVER ONLINE STAFF WOULD BE THE SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON VIRTUAL ACADEMY, PACIFIC NORTHWEST VIRTUAL ACADEMY, CASCADE VIRTUAL ACADEMY, RIVERSIDE VIRTUAL ACADEMY, AND CHINOOK VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

OUR THOUGHTS WERE TO COME UP WITH A PROCESS OF IDENTIFYING A NAME AND THEN GETTING STUDENTS AND FAMILIES INVOLVED WHEN IT COMES TO IDENTIFYING A MASCOT, A FEW STAFF MEMBERS HAVE REQUESTED THE SASQUATCH AS A MASCOT.

I TOLD THEM TO WAIT. THAT'S NOT PART OF THE PROCESS.

THE NEXT PIECE IN TERMS OF ESTABLISHING THIS AS A SCHOOL IS WE NEED TO WORK WITH OSPI AND CREATE A NEW SCHOOL ID.

[00:50:02]

WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF DOING THAT.

WE NEED TO BE RECOGNIZED AS AN ONLINE PROGRAM.

WE'RE IN THE PROCESS OF DOING THAT.

THEN FORECASTING, WHICH BEGINS IN FEBRUARY.

BECAUSE WE OF COURSE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE AS MANY STUDENTS REGISTERED THROUGH THIS NEW SCHOOL AS POSSIBLE.

WITH THAT, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD?

>> HAVE YOU CONTACTED SOME LITTLE OTHER VIRTUAL ACADEMIES THAT ARE OPERATING IN THE STATE TO FIND OUT HOW THEY'RE OPERATING?

>> YEAH. WE HAVE A COMMITTEE FROM RIVER ONLINE.

WE ACTUALLY MEET EVERY TWO OR THREE WEEKS.

ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS WE DID IS WE CREATED A SPREADSHEET.

WHAT I LOOKED FORWARD, OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS, ROUGHLY OUR SIZE AND WHAT THEIR ONLINE OPTIONS WERE.

WE DEVELOPED A SPREADSHEET, THE THINGS WE LIKE THE THINGS WE DIDN'T LIKE.

THE NICE THING IS WE'RE NOT BUILDING ANYTHING FROM SCRATCH.

QUITE HONESTLY, MOST OF WHAT WE DO ALREADY AT RIVER ONLINE IS GOING TO LOOK THE SAME BECAUSE THE WORK THAT THEY'RE DOING IS INCREDIBLE.

WE WENT INTO IT, THINKING, IF WE SEE IDEAS THAT WE LIKE, LET'S STEAL THEM AND USE THEM AND BENEFIT OUR STUDENTS.

AND AS WE KNOW, SOMETIMES WHEN WE LOOK AT OTHER DISTRICTS IT REAFFIRMS WHAT WE ALREADY DO.

[OVERLAPPING] [LAUGHTER]

>> [BACKGROUND] AS OF RIGHT NOW THOSE STUDENTS THAT ARE CURRENTLY TAKING CLASSES FOR BATTLE GROUND OR PRAIRIE ONLINE AND THEY'RE TAKING THOSE CLASSES IN THE LIBRARY, DO THEY HAVE THE OPTION OF TAKING HALF ONLINE HALF IN-PERSON AT BG OR PRAIRIE?

>> YES.

>> WOULD THAT BE DISRUPTED AT ALL?

>> NO.

>> THEY WOULD HAVE THE OPTION TO BE THIS SCHOOL AND THEIR TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS AS WELL?

>> CORRECT. REALLY IN TERMS OF THAT, SOYA, LET'S SAY THAT YOU WERE TAKING FIRST AND SECOND PERIOD ONLINE CLASSES IN THE LIBRARY.

THAT'S EXACTLY HOW IT WOULD LOOK NEXT YEAR, THE SAME LIBRARY, SAME STAFF AT BATTLE GROUND, THE ONLY CHANGE IS YOU'D BE A SHARED STUDENT BETWEEN BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL AND THIS NEW ONLINE ACADEMY.

YOU WOULDN'T EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGES.

>> TRAVIS. [LAUGHTER]

>> YOU MENTIONED AN INCREASE SINCE COVID WITH THE AMOUNT OF ONLINE STUDENTS.

DO YOU HAVE A NUMBER AND IS THAT LIKELY TO INCREASE WITH THIS NEW ACADEMY SCHOOL?

>> THE CURRENT NUMBER THERE'S 257 FULL-TIME STUDENTS.

THAT'S A 250.28 FTE RIGHT NOW AT RIVER ONLINE.

THERE ARE 32 STUDENTS AT PRAIRIE ONLINE WHO ARE ACCESSING ONE OR MORE CLASSES.

THAT DOES NOT COME OUT TO 32 FTE, IT ACTUALLY COMES OUT TO ABOUT 12.8 FTE.

THEN BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL THERE ARE 55 TOTAL STUDENTS ACCESSING CLASSES AND I DON'T HAVE THAT FTE WRITTEN DOWN.

WE CAN MAKE THE ASSUMPTION THAT'S A LITTLE BIT MORE THAN 12.

OUR HOPE OF COURSE IS TO DO A GOOD JOB OF PROMOTING THIS PROGRAM AND LETTING FAMILIES WITHIN OUR OWN DISTRICT KNOW THAT THIS IS AN OPTION FOR THEIR STUDENTS.

WE ARE REACHING OUT WITH THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND PRIMARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS NEXT MONTH IN JANUARY.

MR. [INAUDIBLE] AND I AND MR. MASHAD AND I WILL GO AROUND AND WE WILL LET OTHER BUILDING PRINCIPALS KNOW THAT THIS COULD BE AN OPTION FOR SOME STUDENTS.

AS WE KNOW, SOME STUDENTS WHO STRUGGLE IN SCHOOL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR ACADEMIC ABILITY, SOMETIMES IT'S THE SETTING.

IF WE COULD FIND A SAFE PLACE AND A SAFE WAY FOR STUDENTS TO ACCESS THEIR EDUCATION, THEN THIS WOULD BE AN OPTION.

WHEN AND IF WE DO PURSUE THE MULTI-DISTRICT LICENSE, THAT WOULD BE AN ABSOLUTE POSSIBILITY OF INCREASING THE FTE OF THE PROGRAM AS WE LOOK TO BE A PLACE FOR STUDENTS FROM OUTSIDE AND BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL DISTRICT ACCESS ONLINE SCHOOL.

>> THANK YOU. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE DISCOVERED WAS THAT AS A COMPONENT OF RIVER ONLINE, IT WAS VERY EASY FOR RLL TO GET LOST.

PARENTS IN MANY CASES DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE IT WAS THERE BECAUSE THEY'RE USED TO RIVER ONLINE BEING A PARENT PARTNERSHIP, DIDN'T THINK ABOUT THIS ONLINE COMPONENT.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE CONSIDERED WAS BY SEPARATING THE PROGRAM, WE CREATED SOME IDENTITY AND AN AWARENESS THAT THE PROGRAM EXISTS AND WE CAN REALLY PUBLICIZE IT AND ADVERTISE IT TO ANY OTHER STAKEHOLDERS WHO ARE INTERESTED.

>> GREAT. I'M GLAD YOU GUYS ASKED THOSE QUESTIONS BECAUSE I HAVE THOSE SAME TWO QUESTIONS.

THE OTHER TWO QUESTIONS I HAVE IS INVOLVING-

[00:58:53]

>> WE SUBMIT IT ONLINE AND SO MOST OF THE SUPPORT STAFF IS ALREADY IN EXISTENCE AND IT WOULDN'T BE AN ADDITIONAL EXPENSE.

>> THE WAY WE DO STAFFING IS BASED ON FORECASTING, WHICH IS ONE OF THE TIME-SENSITIVE PIECES TO ALL OF THIS.

IS THAT, WHEN YOU KNOW HOW MANY STAFF YOU HAVE IN A BUILDING, HOW MANY STUDENTS YOU HAVE IN THE BUILDING, THAT DETERMINES THE LEVEL OF SUPPORT STAFF THAT ARE NEEDED TO SUPPORT THEM.

WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT REGISTRARS OR ADMINISTRATION OR A COORDINATOR OR SOMEONE TO OVERSEE THE PROGRAM, YOU LOOK AT THAT BASED ON HOW IT COMPARES TO OTHER EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENTS ACROSS THE DISTRICT AND WE TRY TO DO THAT IN AN EQUITABLE WAY.

IN SOME OF OUR, WHAT WE FIND IS PARTICULARLY IN OUR ALTERNATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, IS NOT ALWAYS EQUAL BECAUSE THE ENVIRONMENT IS DIFFERENT, THE NEEDS MIGHT BE DIFFERENT.

WE DO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS IN THOSE ENVIRONMENTS TO THE POINT THERE MAY NOT BE AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, THERE MAY BE.

WE DO MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS ACCORDING TO WHAT THEIR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS ARE,

[01:00:04]

BUT FORECASTING WOULD BE A DRIVER OF THOSE COSTS AND THE MORE STUDENTS YOU HAVE, THE MORE NEEDS YOU HAVE.

>> THE BOTTOM-LINE FOR US IS THAT AS WE EXAMINE THE POTENTIAL COSTS RIGHT NOW, WE BELIEVE IT WILL BE MINIMAL.

[OVERLAPPING]

>> LIKE SOFTWARE OR HARDWARE.

>> YEAH. WE DO BELIEVE THAT OVER THE LONG RUN, WE WILL BE ABLE TO RECRUIT STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE STATE, BUT MORE SIGNIFICANTLY FROM OUR REGION BY PROVIDING AN ONLINE ACADEMY WHICH COULD BOOST OUR OVERALL ENROLLMENT, WHICH WOULD BE GOOD.

>> IS THIS ENROLLMENT FOR HIGH SCHOOL?

>> NO, IT ACTUALLY IS.

[OVERLAPPING] IT'S A K12.

>> IT IS CURRENTLY A K12. [OVERLAPPING].

>> THAT WOULD BE GIVING US AN ADVANTAGE BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF HIGH SCHOOL ONLINE PROGRAMS. THERE'S NOT A LOT OF K12 ONLINE PROGRAMS, BUT WE'VE ALREADY ESTABLISHED IT AND IT'S WORKING WELL FOR OUR I WAS JUST OUT IN A CLASS TO THE MIDDLE-SCHOOL ONLINE PROGRAM LAST MONTH, FANTASTIC. [NOISE]

>> I THINK THAT'S THE THING THAT I WANT TO CALL IT A FEATHER AND NOT CAP THAT IT REALLY IS WE IN BATTLE GROUND HAVE OFFERED A LOT OF ALTERNATIVES TO OUR STUDENTS AND AS TRAVIS SAID, WE EXAMINE OTHER PROGRAMS AND SOMETIMES WE FIND OUT WHAT WE'RE DOING IS A LITTLE BIT STRONGER.

WHEN THE WORD GETS OUT THAT THAT'S THE CASE, I THINK THAT THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE THAT OUR PROGRAMS WILL GROW.

OBVIOUSLY TIME WILL TELL AND WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT INDEED COMES TO FRUITION, BUT IT WOULD BE OUR GOAL TO HELP MORE KIDS, WHETHER THEY'RE IN OUR DISTRICT OR OUT OF OUR DISTRICT, FIND A LEARNING SETTING THAT HELPS THEM GET TO THEIR END GOAL.

I THINK IT'S A WIN-WIN FOR THE STUDENTS OF THE STATE.

>> GO TIGERS. [LAUGHTER] I'M A TIGER, I LOVE ABOUT THEM.

RICARDO, I APPRECIATE YOU ADDRESSING ME AS MR. DRAKE AND SHELLY OF DANNY [LAUGHTER].

I DON'T KNOW WHAT I DID ANYBODY, BUT I APPRECIATE. [LAUGHTER]

>> BEFORE YOU GO MASK TWO MORE QUESTIONS.

>> OF COURSE.

>> CURRICULUM. IS THE CURRICULUM THE SAME RIVER AS IT IS AT PRAIRIE AS IT IS IT BATTLE GROUND? IF IT'S NOT, WILL IT BE ALL ENCOMPASSED AND WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPAND? GUESS THAT WAS MORE THAN TWO QUESTIONS, BUT IT WAS REALLY JUST ONE.

>> IT WAS A GREAT QUESTION.

I'LL TELL YOU WHAT THEY CURRENTLY DO.

THE PLAN IS FOR MUCH OF THAT TO LOOK THE SAME.

THERE ARE A FEW COURSES OFFERED AT RIVER ONLINE THAT THE TEACHERS HAVE CREATED AND THEY USE A PLATFORM TO DISTRIBUTE THAT CLASS TO THE STUDENTS.

MOST OF THE COURSES THAT WE OFFER OR MANY OF THE COURSES THAT WE OFFER, I SHOULD SAY, I DON'T HAVE AN EXACT NUMBER.

WE DO ACCESS THROUGH OTHER PLATFORMS, WHETHER IT'S INGENUITY AND OTHER PROGRAMS THAT THE DISTRICT HAS PURCHASED.

THERE HAS BEEN CONVERSATIONS FROM THE RIVER ONLINE STAFF.

THEY WOULD LIKE TO CREATE MORE OF THEIR OWN CLASSES AND SO THEY CAN CONTROL THAT CONTENT AND HOW IT'S DISTRIBUTED.

THE ONLY CONVERSATIONS WE'VE HAD AT THIS POINT IS IF WE CREATE OUR OWN CURRICULUM, OF COURSE, IT HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS AND IT NEEDS TO BE A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE AT RIVER ONLINE OR THE NEW ONLINE SCHOOL.

IN TERMS OF EXPOSURE TO STANDARDS AS A STUDENT WOULD RECEIVE AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL OR BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

THE IDEA WOULD BE THE CONTENT RECEIVED AND THE STANDARDS RECEIVED WOULD BE SIMILAR, IF NOT IDENTICAL, AND THEN OF COURSE, THE PLATFORM AND HOW THE STUDENTS ACCESS THOSE STANDARDS WOULD LOOK DIFFERENT BECAUSE IT'S AN ONLINE PROGRAM.

>> JACKIE, TO YOUR POINT, THERE IS CONSISTENTLY CURRENTLY WITH YOU TAKE AN ONLINE MATH CLASS AT PRAIRIE, OR YOU TAKE IT AT RIVER ONLINE, OR YOU TAKE IT AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL, THERE IS CONSISTENCY RIGHT NOW.

>> IT'S THE SAME COURSE.

>> IT'S THE SAME COURSE.

>> MY OTHER QUESTION IS, DO STUDENTS HAVE TO TAKE THE CLASSES IN A LIBRARY OR CAN THEY DO IT FROM THEIR HOME AT EIGHT O’CLOCK AT NIGHT?

>> YEAH, WE DO HAVE STUDENTS WHO ACCESS THEIR COURSEWORK ONLY VIA ONLINE, THEY DON'T COME IN AT ALL.

THE REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE FULL-TIME ONLINE AT THE HIGH-SCHOOL LEVEL IS THEY CAN RECEIVE SUPPORT THROUGH A CLASSIFIED STAFF PERSON THAT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CERTIFICATED BECAUSE ALE LAW REQUIRES CHECK-INS, BUT THERE ARE STUDENTS WHO DO ACCESS THEIR COURSEWORK ONLY ONLINE AND THEY DON'T COME IN ON CAMPUS AT ALL.

>> WHEN WE TALK ABOUT STUDENTS IN THE LIBRARY TO ACCESS COURSES, IT'S MOSTLY BECAUSE THEY'RE ATTENDING OTHER CLASSES.

THEY MIGHT BE IN FIRST PERIOD AND SECOND PERIOD, AND THEN THIRD PERIOD, THEY HAVE AN ONLINE CLASS.

RATHER THAN SKID ALL THAT AND RUN HOME AND TRY TO DO AN ONLINE CLASS OR HAVE NOTHING TO DO, THEY JUST GO TO THE LIBRARY AND THEY HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ON IT THEN, BUT IF YOU'RE A STUDENT WHO'S REGISTERED AT RIVER ONLINE,

[01:05:02]

MOST OF YOUR WORK IS DONE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING AT HOME.

>> THANK YOU.

>> YOU'RE WELCOME AND CONGRATULATIONS, JACKIE.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, TRAVIS.

>> WELCOME, THANK YOU, EVERYONE.

>> THAT'S IT FOR SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO SHELLEY WITTON FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING.

>> WE HAVE TWO ITEMS FOR YOU TONIGHT.

WE ARE GOING TO START WITH OUR CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION AND ASSESSMENT TEAM.

DAVE CRESAP AND ALLISON TUCHARDT AND AMY FREDERICKS ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT WHERE THEY ARE IN THE ADOPTION PROCESS FOR THE THREE CURRICULUMS THAT THEY ARE WORKING TOWARDS.

[NOISE]

>> GOOD EVENING. IS THIS WORKING? [BACKGROUND] IS THAT WORKING? IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE WE'VE BEEN HERE TO SEE YOU.

IT'S GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN.

WE WANTED TO COMMUNICATE WHERE WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF OUR ADOPTIONS.

I HAVE WITH ME DAVE [INAUDIBLE] CO-DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION ASSESSMENT AND AMY FREDERICK'S THE CURRICULUM ADOPTION COORDINATOR.

SO WE'RE GOING TO GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED.

WE HAVE THREE MAJOR ADOPTIONS THAT YOU PROBABLY HAVE BEEN HEARING ABOUT, BUT WE JUST WANTED TO REMIND YOU OF WHAT THOSE ARE.

WE HAVE K-8, ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, AND FIFTH-GRADE, SIXTH-GRADE, AND EIGHTH-GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES AND THAT'S NOT INCLUDING SEVENTH-GRADE BECAUSE WE DID A WASHINGTON STATE HISTORY ADOPTION NOT TOO LONG AGO.

WE HAVE PA SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING, AND THERE WERE SOME MINOR ADOPTIONS THAT WE WILL BE WORKING ON AS WELL THIS YEAR.

WE HAVE A PSYCHOLOGY ADOPTION FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND SOME AP COURSES THAT NEED REFRESHERS.

BUT THESE ARE THE BIGGIES.

>> GOOD EVENING. SINCE THE LAST TIME WE SAW YOU WE'VE HAD 15 COMMITTEE MEETINGS, FIVE FOR EACH OF THE THREE MAJOR ADOPTIONS.

WE FIRST SET THE STAGE LIKE, WHAT ARE THE CORE BELIEF STATEMENTS? WHAT IS IT AS A DISTRICT AND AS A COMMITTEE THAT WE VALUE AND WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR NEW CURRICULUM? WE REVIEWED RESEARCH AND STANDARDS, AND EXPLAINED DOCUMENTS WE'D USE TO SCREEN AND SCOUT MATERIALS.

TALKED ABOUT HOW WE MADE DECISIONS AND SO FORTH, AND THEN IT WAS TIME TO TALK MONEY.

WE HAD TO LOOK AT OUR BUDGET AND SEE WHAT IT WAS THAT WE COULD REASONABLY AFFORD SOME OF THE PROPOSALS SUBMITTED TO US WE HAD TO TAKE OFF THE TABLE, BUT WITH EVERYTHING ELSE, WE SHARED THOSE WITH OUR COMMITTEES AND THEN THEY NARROW THEM DOWN TO FOUR.

THE FINAL FOURS WE CALL THEM.

AT THE TIME, BUT THE FINAL FOUR CAME TO BE WE SHARED THIS INFORMATION WITH STAFF AND COMMUNITY.

THE STAFF AND COMMUNITY HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND ONE OR TWO OPEN HOUSES TO REVIEW MATERIALS, AND THEY ALSO HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW THEM ONLINE AND PROVIDE FEEDBACK.

WE ALSO HAD VENDOR PRESENTATIONS.

THERE WERE 12 VENDOR PRESENTATIONS ALL TOGETHER WHERE COMMITTEES WERE ABLE TO HEAR FROM REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE VARIOUS COMPANIES.

WE THEN NARROWED DOWN TO TWO AND NEXT DAY IS GOING TO TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT WHAT'S COMING UP NEXT.

>> WE'RE AT THE HALFWAY POINT IN MOST OF THESE ADOPTIONS AND SO WHAT'S LEFT TO DO IS WE'RE GOING TO PILOT THE TOP. WE'RE DOWN TO THE TOP TWO.

WE STILL GOING TO RUN FIELD TESTS, ARE PILOTS OF THE PROGRAMS ACTUALLY SEE HOW THEY PERFORM WITH STUDENTS.

WE HAVE SOMETHING WE'RE CALLING CARS, WHICH IS A CURRICULUM ADOPTION ROADSHOW WHICH WE'RE GOING TO GO TO THE SCHOOLS AND SET UP A LITTLE TABLE AND ALLOW TEACHERS TO COME BY AND SEE WHAT THE OPTIONS ARE LOOKING AT THE CURTAILMENT AND STUFF.

WE [INAUDIBLE] HELPS TO BRING ATTENTION TO THE ADOPTION INTO THE PILOTS.

THEN WE NEED TO MAKE A FINAL DECISION AND IT WILL BE DONE THROUGH OUR CONSENSUS PROCESS.

LOTS OF CONVERSATION WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT REALLY IS THE BEST CURRICULUM FOR OUR STUDENTS.

THEN THERE'LL BE, AS YOU KNOW BEFORE LIKE COMMUNITY REVIEW AND STAFF REVIEW ALONGSIDE OF ACTUALLY THE BOARD, BE ABLE TO LOOK AT WHAT OUR DECISION WISE.

FROM THERE THE IMC REVIEWS THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS COMMITTEE.

WE TAKE THINGS TOO, THEY BASICALLY JUST GET INSIDE THE ACCOUNTABILITY PROCESS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE FOLLOWING THE FOREIGN POLICY AND HOW WE DO THE ADOPTIONS.

I MENTIONED THE BOARD REVIEW FOR YOU GUYS TO BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THINGS AND THEN GO BRAIN-BACK RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BOARD AND THE FIRST AND SECOND READING LATER ON BEHALF OF A SLIDE ON WINDOWS DATES.

>> DAVE TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PILOTS.

I'LL JUST TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE.

[01:10:01]

LIKE HE SAID, WE HAVE THE TOP TWO PROGRAMS FOR EACH OF THE CONTENT AREAS.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THE TEACHER SPEND ABOUT A MONTH WITH EACH PROGRAM.

THEY WILL HAVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BEFORE THEY START.

IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT THEY UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE THE MATERIALS.

THEY WILL BE STARTING THAT TOMORROW MORNING AT 08:00 AM.

WE HAVE OUR FIRST ROUND OF PILOT TRAININGS WITH OUR PRIMARY TEACHERS FOR ELA, WE WILL ALSO BE SURVEYING OUR STUDENTS SO THAT THERE IS A PRE-ASSESSMENT AND THEN A POST-ASSESSMENTS SO THAT WE CAN GET SOME INFORMATION ON HOW THE STUDENTS FEEL ABOUT THAT.

THEN DAVE HAD ALSO MENTIONED THAT THERE'S ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENTS TO GIVE INPUT ABOUT THE PROGRAM.

THESE ARE THE PROGRAMS THAT WE ARE GOING TO USE FOR OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS PILOT.

IN KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH-GRADE IN ELA, WE'RE GOING TO USE SOMETHING CALLED AMPLIFY.

CKLA, WHICH STANDS FOR CORE KNOWLEDGE LANGUAGE ARTS, AND THEN WE HAVE THE GREAT MINDS, WIT & WISDOM, AND FOUNDATIONS.

THE FOUNDATIONS IS A FOUNDATIONAL PHONICS PROGRAM THAT WE USE TO HELP KIDS UNDERSTAND THE BASICS ON HOW TO LEARN, HOW TO READ.

THEN IN GRADES 6-8, WE HAVE COMMONLIT 360, WHICH IS AN ONLINE CURRICULUM, AND MCGRAW HILL STUDYSYNC.

>> FOR SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

WE HAVE CHARACTER STRONG AND SECOND STEP.

OUR COMMITTEE WILL BE PILOTING CHARACTER STRONG FIRST.

>> FOR MIDDLE-SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES WE HAVE TWO PROGRAMS AT EACH GRADE LEVEL.

SAVVAS OR PIERCE, THAT USED TO BE PEARSON IS IN EACH GRADE LEVEL.

BUT THEN AT PIERCE 6 AND 8, THE OTHER PROGRAMS THAT WERE LIKE MCGRAW-HILL AT FIFTH GRADE.

FIFTH AND EIGHTH GRADES ARE BOTH USA HISTORY AND THEN SIXTH-GRADE IS MORAL HISTORY.

AT SIXTH GRADE, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, THE SAME COMPANY THAT PRODUCES THAT, THE MAGAZINE IS ONE OF THE VENDORS THERE AND THAT GRADE EIGHT TCI HASN'T BEEN I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT TCI [INAUDIBLE] TCI IS ONE OF THE REFLUX.

WE HAVE BASICALLY TWO OPTIONS AT EACH GRADE LEVEL.

>> HERE'S A LITTLE BIT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PILOTS.

ALISON MENTIONED THAT TOMORROW WE HAVE OUR TRAINING FOR ELA ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS.

AFTER WINTER BREAK, OUR TEACHERS ARE GOING TO GIVE GREAT MINDS, WIT & WISDOM WITH FOUNDATIONS, A WHIRL.

THEN OUR SECOND PILOTS WILL START A LITTLE BIT LATER IN JANUARY, MIDDLE-SCHOOL AND SOCIAL STUDIES ARE ON THE SAME SCHEDULE.

AFTER THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS EXPERIENCE THE FIRST PILOT, WE BRING THE COMMITTEE TOGETHER.

WE TALK ABOUT WHAT WORKED WELL AND MAYBE WHAT DIDN'T WORK WELL, AND THEN WE TRAIN THEM FOR PILOT NUMBER 2, SHAMPOO RINSE, REPEAT.

>> AFTER THE PILOT.

WHAT HAPPENS IS ONCE YOU HAVE ALL THAT INFORMATION FROM THE FIELD [INAUDIBLE] AND THEN WE WILL MAKE A DECISION.

ELA IS SLATED FOR MARCH 14 SOCIAL STUDIES ABOUT A MONTH LATER AND SOCIAL EMOTION.

THEN THEY WILL GO INTO THAT, THE BOARD AND COMMUNITY REVIEW PROCESS.

THE DATES ARE THERE, LATER PART OF MARCH THROUGH MID-APRIL.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, THEY'RE A LITTLE BIT LATER FOR THE SOCIAL STUDIES AND SOCIAL EMOTION.

OUR PLAN AT THIS POINT, THERE HAS BEEN SOME DISCUSSION ON WE MIGHT MOVE THINGS UP A LITTLE BIT, BUT TANGIBLY AT THIS POINT, WE HOPE TO BE BACK HERE ON APRIL 24 WHEN THE FIRST READING OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS PRODUCTION AND THEN ON MAY 22ND FOR THE FIRST READING, SOCIAL STUDIES, SOCIAL EMOTIONS.

THOSE DATES ARE THERE. ELA IS FIRST AND THEN SOCIAL STUDIES AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL AS A PAIR.

>> WHEN IT COMES TO SOCIAL STUDIES, FOR EXAMPLE, WE WILL BE ABLE TO HAND YOU OFF A SINGLE TEXTBOOK AND SAY HERE.

WHEN IT COMES TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS, IF YOU LOOK AT THE PICTURE ON THE LEFT, IF WE WERE TO RECOMMEND THE BOARD ADOPT GREAT MINDS WITH FOUNDATIONS.

THAT'S EVERYTHING YOU WOULD NEED TO LOOK AT.

ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE, THAT'S AMPLIFY AND EVERYTHING THAT YOU WOULD NEED TO LOOK AT.

IT'S A LITTLE BIT MORE TRICKY.

BUT WE DO HAVE SOME IDEAS THAT ALISON WILL SHARE WITH YOU.

>> BECAUSE WE WON'T BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU A K8 SET OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS MATERIALS BECAUSE THERE'S JUST TOO MUCH AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PICTURE THERE, WE WOULD LIKE TO INVITE YOU TO ATTEND ONE OF OUR CAR SHOWS, AND SO WE HAVE BUT, IS THERE A WAY TO MAKE THAT LINK HAPPEN? YOU TOUCH IT OR WHAT? I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE DO THERE.

[01:15:02]

[BACKGROUND]

>> DON'T TOUCH IT. [LAUGHTER]

>> WE WILL SHARE THAT WITH YOU LATER.

STARTING ON JANUARY 5TH IS OUR FIRST CAR SHOW, AND I BELIEVE THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE AT PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY THAT DAY AND THEN WE HAVE 15 OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU TO COME AND LOOK AT THE MATERIALS IN-PERSON.

WE ALSO HAVE THE ABILITY FOR YOU TO COME TO CASEE.

LIKE YOU SAW ON THOSE BOOKSHELVES, WE HAVE THE MATERIALS AVAILABLE AT THE CASEE CENTER SO YOU CAN CALL AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND COME LOOK AT THEM.

THEN WE ALSO WILL HAVE ONLINE ACCESS FOR YOU, BUT WE'LL HAVE TO WORK ON WORKING WITH OUR PUBLISHERS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE GET ALL THE RIGHT ACCESS FOR YOU, BUT YOU'LL HAVE ACCESS TO ALL OF IT ELECTRONICALLY AS WELL.

>> LISA, CAN YOU ACTUALLY GO BACK TO THAT PICTURE? [INAUDIBLE] JUST TO SHOW, YOU GO BACK TO THE FOREGROUND RIGHT HERE.

WHAT THIS REPRESENTS IS ALL THE READING MATERIALS FROM KINDERGARTEN ALL THE WAY THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE AND THAT'S A LOT OF STUFF.

WE TALKED ABOUT THE EXPENSE OF CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS AND IN SOME WAYS THAT REPRESENTS COST.

THERE'S JUST A LOT OF MATERIALS, THERE'S THE TEXTBOOK AND THEN THERE'S ALL THE TEACHER MATERIALS AND THEN THERE'S A SPECIAL BOOKS THAT THERE ARE SUPPLEMENTAL BOOKS FOR CORPORATE HISTORY.

IN A WAY, THIS PICTURE, ITS PURPOSES, I THINK TWO-FOLD.

ONE IS TO SHOW YOU HOW HARD IT IS FOR US JUST TO HAND IT TO YOU TO LOOK AT.

BUT ALSO WHEN IT COMES TO HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST? THIS REPRESENTS IN SOME WAYS, IT'S THE MAGNITUDE OF THESE ADOPTIONS.

SORRY, SO NOW WE'LL GO BACK AND FINISH UP.

[LAUGHTER]

>> MAKE IT GO BACKWARDS, YES I CAN.

>> WE'RE AT HALFWAY [LAUGHTER] BACK.

>> GOT IT.

>> WE'RE AT THE HALFWAY POINT.

THERE'S JUST A LOT OF PEOPLE DO A LOT OF THE GOOD WORK.

WE JUST WANTED TO THANK OUR COMMITTEE MEMBERS AND THEN ALSO THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT ARE PARTICIPATING IN THEIR REVIEWS AND PROVIDING [INAUDIBLE]

>> TCI, TEACHERS CURRICULUM INSTITUTE.

>> THANK YOU. TEACHERS CURRICULUM INSTITUTE. ANY QUESTIONS HERE?

>> CAN YOU PROVIDE THIS SLIDE SHOW TO US?

>> I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS BEEN SHARED [OVERLAPPING] IT'S NOT IN THERE NOW, BUT IT WILL BE.

>> IT WILL BE.

>> PERFECT.

>> THANK YOU. THAT'S ALL I HAD.

>> THANK YOU, GUYS.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANKS.

>> NEXT UP, WE HAVE OUR AMAZING ART TEACHERS FROM RIVER HOMELINK, BECKY BROILS AND [INAUDIBLE] THEY'RE HERE TO TALK TO US ABOUT A RECENT ART CONFERENCE THAT THEY ATTENDED.

>> THANK YOU, SHELLEY.

THANK YOU, BOARD.

THANK YOU, EVERYBODY.

MY NAME IS BECKY BROILS AND I TEACH VISUAL ARTS AND MEDIA ARTS AT RIVER HOMELINK AND I'VE BEEN TEACHING THE DISTRICT FOR OVER 15 YEARS.

>> I'M [INAUDIBLE] AND LET ME GO JOIN HER AT RIVER HOMELINK.

[LAUGHTER] I'M TEACHING MIDDLE SCHOOL THERE.

I'VE TAUGHT IN THE DISTRICT ABOUT 17 YEARS.

>> I'M ALSO THE CORE-PRESIDENT OF THE WASHINGTON ART EDUCATION ASSOCIATION.

BARB AND I ARE CO-CHAIRS OF VIRTUAL WORKSHOPS THAT WE PUT ON EVERY MONTH, THE THIRD SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH, FOR ART TEACHERS AND ART ADVOCATES IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON.

WE WERE THE CORE PLANNERS OF THE FALL CONFERENCE THAT WE JUST THREW AT CLARK COLLEGE IN VANCOUVER AT THE BEGINNING OF NOVEMBER.

IF YOU EVER GO TO A CONFERENCE AND YOU SEE SOMEBODY DOING A REALLY GOOD JOB, PLEASE GO TELL THEM, BECAUSE IT IS A BIG FEAT TO THROW ONE OF THESE CONFERENCES.

WE HAD OVER 150 ATTENDEES FROM ACROSS THE STATE OF WASHINGTON AND WE ARE HERE TO EXPRESS OUR GRATITUDE TO DANNY AND SHELLEY AND BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR ALLOWING, THEY PLOT OUT FOR ALL THE ART TEACHERS WITHIN THE DISTRICT, THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND OUR CONFERENCE.

THEY'VE ALWAYS ASKED A FEW OF US TO GO, BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT THEY BECAUSE IT WAS LOCAL AND TOOK THE FUNDS TO SEND ALL OF US.

[LAUGHTER] FIFTEEN OF THE BATTLE GROUND ART TEACHERS WENT.

FIVE OF US ACTUALLY PRESENTED AND WE WANT TO THANK YOU FOR

[01:20:02]

YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR THE ARTS IN BATTLE GROUND AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO MORE ARTS IN THE FUTURE AS WE KNOW THAT THE ARTS ARE THE BEST WAY TO HEAL SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL ASPECTS THAT WE'VE BEEN GOING THROUGH IN THE PAST FEW YEARS.

WE WANT TO THANK YOU FOR MAKING TIME FOR US TO COLLABORATE DURING OUR WORKDAY AND WE KNOW IT SHOWS YOUR COMMITMENT TO ARTS EDUCATION AND THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF OUR STAFF.

AS YOU KNOW, GOOD TEACHERS ARE LIFELONG LEARNERS AND WE DO CONTINUE TO NEED YOUR SUPPORT IN ORDER TO ACCESS THESE ACTIVITIES.

>> OH, YES.

>> IT'S COOL.

>> WE HAD THREE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND ONE OF THEM WAS HIEP NGUYEN, AND HE'S THE FOUNDER OF CIRCLE PAINTING AND HE ALSO DEVELOPED THE STRAW ALL-YOU-CAN PROGRAM.

HE FACILITATED GIANT MURAL AND THOSE ARE TWO BATTLE GROUND TEACHERS, THAT'S CARMEN [INAUDIBLE] AND ANDREW JOHNSON WHO ALSO CAME HERE REFEREE.

[LAUGHTER] WELL WE GOT K THROUGH 12.

>> AMAZING.

>> THE MURAL JUST TURNED OUT BEAUTIFUL AND IT'S GIGANTIC. I WANTED TO BRING IT.

>> YOU GOT TO KEEP THE MURAL?

>> YES, WE KEPT THE MURAL.

>> HOW DO YOU MANAGE THAT? [LAUGHTER]

>> WE KEPT IT [OVERLAPPING] ON THE UNDERSTANDING THAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR PLACES AROUND DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER TO DISPLAY IT.

I'M CURRENTLY TRYING TO GET IN CONTACT WITH THE DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER LIBRARY.

THEY HAVE A BIG WONDERFUL WINDOW SPACE OUT IN THE BOTTOM.

IF ANYBODY OUT THERE IN ZOOM LAND HAS A BIG WINDOW OR A BIG DISPLAY AREA.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR PLACES AROUND DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER OR BATTLE GROUND OR SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON TO DISPLAY IT AND THEN WE ARE GOING TO MOVE IT UP TO SEATTLE AND DISPLAY IT UP THERE AND THEN TO THE EAST SIDE OF THE STATE.

IT'S GOING TO FOLLOW US AROUND TO SHARE THE BEAUTY THAT IT WAS.

>> OUT OF CURIOSITY, WAS THE MURAL A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT OF DIFFERENT ARTISTS?

>> WELL, OR IT WAS AN INVITATION TO ALL THE PEOPLE.

>> EVERYBODY WHO WAS ATTENDING.

>> THERE'S A SYSTEM HE HAS AND HE TAUGHT PEOPLE HOW TO FACILITATE IT.

WE MET LIKE FRIDAY NIGHT, A SMALL GROUP, HE RAN US THROUGH IT, AND THEN WE WERE HELPING PEOPLE ALONG THE WAY.

BUT IT WAS BEAUTIFUL BECAUSE ART TEACHERS ARE SPECIAL PEOPLE AND WE HAVE THIS CHANCE TO JUST DROP BY THE MURAL AND WORK WITH OUR PEOPLE WE ARE MEETING OR WE ONLY SEE ONCE A YEAR WHEN WE GO TO THESE CONFERENCES.

IT WAS JUST MAGICAL TO HAVE THE TIME TO BE DRAWING AND CREATING WITH THESE PEOPLE, IT WAS PRETTY GREAT.

IT'S A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF COURAGE.

>> WHAT I WAS SAYING IT WAS A SHARED SPACE LIKE YOU WOULD WORK ON ONE SPOT AND THEN YOU WOULD MOVE DOWN AND YOU WOULD FILL IN A SPOT THAT WAS JUST LEFT FOR YOU.

ANYTIME YOU WALKED UP TO IT, YOU HAD FIVE MINUTES, YOU COULD JUST ADD A LITTLE BIT.

IT WAS CONSTANT FEEDBACK.

WHAT I HEARD, WE WOULD ALWAYS BE PRAISING EACH OTHER OF LIKE, ''OH MY GOSH, I LOVE THE WAY YOU ADDED THE PATTERN THERE.'' LIKE, ''OH, THANK YOU.

I THINK IT NEEDS A LITTLE OVER HERE.'' THAT BACK-AND-FORTH OF THE, YOU'VE GOT THIS VISUAL REPRESENTATION, BUT YOU HAVE THE COLLABORATION GOING ON RIGHT IN FRONT AND THAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THINGS FROM THE CONFERENCE I THOUGHT.

>> BUT ALSO, WE KNOW HOW TO TAKE IT BACK TO OUR CLASSROOM.

I THINK THAT THEY ARE JUST THE NEXT WEEK I GOT SOLELY WANTED TO DO SO I DID IT WITH ALL MY CLASSES AND BEING LOVED, CAN WE DO THAT MURAL AGAIN? ALL [NOISE] I THINK IS WHERE I'M I GOING TO PUT ALL THESE MURALS? THEY LOVE IT.

>> IT IS WONDERFUL.

>> WOW.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> ONE AS OUR TEACHERS, WE'VE ALWAYS BEEN GREAT AT COLLABORATION.

IT'S PART OF THE ARTISTIC PROCESS IS TO WORK NOT IN A SILO, BUT TO SEEK OUT FEEDBACK AND WE JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU GUYS.

WE'VE BEEN DOING COLLABORATION BECAUSE OF THE DISTRICT FOR ABOUT 15 YEARS NOW.

SINCE I STARTED, I STARTED COLLABORATING ON WEDNESDAY MORNINGS OR MAYBE IT WAS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS WITH LINDA PETERSON AND SHE TAUGHT ME HOW TO BECOME THE ART TEACHER THAT I AM AND SO THAT COLLABORATION IS REALLY IMPORTANT AND IT'S NICE TO BE ABLE TO SHOW A VISUAL REPRESENTATION.

I JUST WANTED TO SHARE MY GREAT TAKEAWAY REAL QUICK WAS, OUR OTHER KEYNOTE SPEAKER WAS DR. JOHN SPENCER.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW DR. JOHN SPENCER, PLEASE PICK UP HIS BOOK CALLED LUNCH.

[01:25:02]

ALLISON [INAUDIBLE] ALSO JOINED US FOR THE JOHN SPENCER KEYNOTE SPEAKER.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I TOOK FROM HIM WAS HE BROUGHT UP THE FACT THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE NOT, YES, THEY'RE DIGITAL NATIVES.

THEY GREW UP IN A DIGITAL WORLD, BUT REALLY OUR STUDENTS ARE DIGITAL CONSUMERS.

THEY'RE JUST CONSUMING INFORMATION.

>> MOST OF THEM.

>> MOST OF THEM. THEY'RE NOT MAKING THE CONTENT.

WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE CREATIVE THOUGHT AND NEW IDEAS FOR THESE KIDS TO CREATE CONTENT.

THEY NEED TO MAKE THE MUSIC, MAKE THE VIDEOS, WELL, TIKTOK, SURE.

[LAUGHTER] I APPLAUD SOME OF YOU GUYS ON TIKTOK.

IT'S AT LEAST A VIDEO CREATION SOFTWARE SERVICE.

AS ART TEACHERS, THAT'S WHAT WE DO EVERY DAY.

>> [LAUGHTER] WE GET THE PROCESS.

>> I JUST WANTED TO END WITH I'LL BE CONTINUING REPRESENTING WASHINGTON STATE AT THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN SAN ANTONIO IN APRIL.

I LOOK FORWARD TO COMING BACK AND SHARING SOME OF THE NATIONAL ART ISSUES OR OUR EDUCATION ISSUES WITH YOU GUYS ALONG THE WAY.

PART OF OUR ROLE WITH THE WASHINGTON ART EDUCATION ASSOCIATION IS ADVOCACY AND SO YOU WILL SEE MORE OF US ADVOCATING FOR THE ARTS IN FRONT OF YOU.

AGAIN, THANK YOU TO THE DISTRICT AND TO THE BOARD FOR ALWAYS SUPPORTING THE ARTS. QUESTIONS.

>> JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR COMING.

THAT'S VERY KIND OF YOU TO COME HERE AND YOU MAKE IT EASY FOR US TO SUPPORT YOU AND TELL YOU THAT YOU GUYS ARE WONDERFUL. YEAH. THANK YOU.

>> WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT, WE KNOW IT'S A LOT AND WE DO.

>> WE GET A LOT FROM IT. [LAUGHTER]

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]

>> NEXT UP IS HUMAN RESOURCES, NO REPORT.

FINANCE, MICHELLE SCOTT IS CURRENTLY ATTENDING A CAPITAL FACILITIES MEETING IN YAKEL.

SHE'S NOT HERE TODAY. THAT BRINGS US TO OPERATIONS, KEVIN.

>> NICE. WE'RE GEARING UP FOR CHRISTMAS BREAK.

WE'VE GOT QUITE A BIT OF WORK GOING ON.

THE MODULUS FOR THE CAM.

FIRST BUILDING WILL BE ARRIVING, STARTING NEXT MONDAY.

WILL BE STAGING, THERE'S QUITE A FEW UNITS.

THERE'S OVER 20 UNITS.

WE'LL BE STAGING THOSE OUT IN THE GRAVEL PARKING LOT AREA AND WE'LL FENCE THAT TACTIC FROM VANDALISM AND SAFETY.

THE INTENT IS WE NEED ABOUT FOUR DAYS OF DRY WEATHER, SO IT IS DEPENDENT ON WEATHER ON WHEN WE SET THOSE.

WE'RE GETTING READY TO START OUR ENTRY SECURITY PROJECTS OVER THE BREAK AT GLENN WOOD AND CAPTAIN STRONG AND PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY, THOSE ARE THE PROJECTS THAT ARE GOING TO REQUIRE NEW STOREFRONT WINDOWS, DOORS.

MY GOAL IS TO HAVE CAPTAIN STRONG 100 PERCENT FUNCTIONAL WHEN SCHOOL STARTS, MEANING EVERYTHING'S HOOKED UP AND WORKING.

THE OTHER TWO IT WILL TAKE A LITTLE WHILE TO GET THEM FINISHED UP.

BUT THE HARDWARE, THE DOORS AND EVERYTHING WILL BE INSTALLED.

KIDS WILL JUST HAVE TO MANUALLY OPEN THOSE.

WE'RE GOING TO BE REPLACING THE FLOORING AT THE DAYBREAK PRIMARY 400 MODULAR THE HALLWAYS, AS WELL AS THE ART ROOM FLOORING.

PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY, AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, WE HAD A WATER LINE BREAK THERE AND SO WE'VE GOT THREE CLASSROOMS THAT WE WILL BE WRAPPING UP THEIR RENOVATION.

SAME WITH LAUREN JIM, WHERE WE HAD A ROOF SOME WATER, COME INTO THE BUILDING, WE'LL BE REFURBISHING THOSE CLASSROOMS SO A LOT OF BUSY BREAK.

>> IN REGARD TO THE MODULAR UNITS, IF YOU'RE GOING TO USE THE GRAVEL PARKING LOT AS A STAGING AREA, DO YOU ANTICIPATE THAT BEING AVAILABLE AGAIN PRIOR TO STUDENTS COMING BACK FROM CHRISTMAS BREAK?

>> I DON'T IT'D BE GREAT IF IT WAS SHARP.

THEY'RE ALL WELL AWARE OF IT THEY'RE USING THE PARKING OVER JUST THE CLOSEST OUT TO PARKWAY AND THEN IF THEY NEED TO GO OVER BY THE WAREHOUSE, THAT'S WHERE THOSE KIDS WILL PARK.

>> THEY'LL OPEN THAT UP FOR THEIR KIDS?

>> YEAH.

>> OKAY.

>> THAT'S WHAT I HAVE.

>> ANY OTHER QUESTION?

>> THANK YOU, KEVIN.

>> THANK YOU.

[01:30:02]

>> LAST UP TO COMPLETE OUR REPORT, STAFF UPDATES, COMMUNICATIONS, AMANDA RICHTER.

>> GOOD EVENING. I HAVE OUR NOVEMBER COMMUNICATION SCORECARD TO SHARE.

WE HAD A BIG INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF MESSAGES THAT WE SENT TO FAMILIES AND STAFF LAST MONTH, DRIVEN BY TOPICS SUCH AS CURRICULUM ADOPTIONS AND RESTRICTION.

TESTING, BOTH THE SMARTER, BALANCED RESULTS FROM LAST SPRING AS WELL AS ACT AND SAT OPPORTUNITIES THIS UPCOMING SPRING.

THEN THE TWO-HOUR LATE START THAT WE HAD ON NOVEMBER 29TH DUE TO WEATHER.

WE'VE ALSO POSTED MORE STORIES ON SCHOOL AND DISTRICT WEBSITES LAST MONTH, INCLUDING FEATURE OF A RIVER GRAD, WHO'S FILM WON A CINEMATOGRAPHY AWARD.

A STORY ABOUT A RIVER FAMILY WHO HIKED THE TRIPLE CROWN, WHICH IS THE PACIFIC CREST TRAIL, CONTINENTAL DIVIDE TRAIL IN THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL.

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS WHO COMPETED IN THE ELEMENTARY SCIENCE OLYMPIAD.

IF YOU GO TO THE SECOND SLIDE, IT'S AN OVERVIEW OF SOME OF THE BIGGER PROJECTS THAT WE WORKED ON.

ON THE RIGHT IS A POSTER DESIGNED BY JENNA BUSHER HILL THAT WILL HANG IN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS AFTER THE WINTER BREAK TO LET THEM KNOW ABOUT DIFFERENT MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES THAT ARE AVAILABLE IN THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS NATIONALLY.

THOSE POSTERS ARE GOING TO BE PRINTED IN ENGLISH, RUSSIAN, AND SPANISH AND WE HAD SOME GREAT INPUT FROM SARAH AND RICARDO.

THANK YOU BOTH VERY MUCH FOR PROVIDING THAT FEEDBACK.

THEN THE LAST SLIDE, ON THE LEFT IS THE COLOMBIA'S COVERAGE OF A TEEN MENTAL HEALTH NIGHT THAT WAS ORGANIZED BY THE COUNSELING AND ADMIN TEAMS AT PRAIRIE AND SUPPORTED BY THE PREVENT TOGETHER BATTLEGROUND PREVENTION ALLIANCE.

THEY ALL DID A TREMENDOUS JOB PROVIDING FAMILIES WITH INFORMATION ABOUT STRATEGIES AND RESOURCES FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE PREVENTION.

IN THE UPPER RIGHT IS A SCREENSHOT OF A VIDEO THAT WAS CREATED BY CHRIS BROWN AND THIS VIDEO WAS SHARED AT THE ESD 112 LEGISLATIVE FORUM LAST MONTH, WHERE LEGISLATORS FOR THE REGION GOT TO HEAR ABOUT ISSUES RELATED TO CAPITAL FUNDING.

THEN ON THE BOTTOM RIGHT IS STILL FROM A VIDEO THAT THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM PRODUCED OF ALL THE VETERANS DAY ACTIVITIES ACROSS THE DISTRICT. ANY QUESTIONS?

>> THANK YOU, AMANDA.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANKS.

>> THAT COMPLETES THE SUPERINTENDENT AND STAFF UPDATES.

>> GREAT AND THAT BRINGS US TO CITIZENS COMMENTS.

[9. Citizens' Comments]

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE AS WE GOT UPDATED ON ALL OF THOSE WONDERFUL THINGS.

OUR FIRST CITIZEN TO COME UP IS SARAH, CAN YOU JOIN US? FIRST YOU'LL JUST SAY YOUR NAME.

>> VERTICALLY CHALLENGED CHAIR.

HI, SARAH HARRISON.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY TO CHAT WITH YOU GUYS.

VERY RIVETING MEETING TONIGHT.

A LOT OF GREAT STUFF.

GOOD JOB, EVERYONE.

IT'S JUST GREAT TO HEAR ALL THE POSITIVE ENERGY AND ALL THE AMAZING THINGS GOING ON.

I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU I ATTENDED THE CAC MEETING ON THE 8TH OF DECEMBER.

THERE WAS A BOND HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT THAT WAS GIVEN AT THE NOVEMBER 10TH MEETING.

THE DIRECTION CHANGED FROM RUNNING A BOND TO FOCUSING MORE ON FACILITIES PLANNING.

I THINK WE HAD A VERY PRODUCTIVE, I AGREE WITH YOU JACKIE, MEETING.

I THINK THAT A LOT OF THE DISCUSSION, AT LEAST IN MY GROUP THAT SHELLEY FACILITATED HAD TO DO WITH SAFETY.

I THINK AS A PARENT, IT IS A HUGE ISSUE.

WHEN WE'RE THINKING ABOUT FACILITIES PLANNING, I DEFINITELY SUPPORT KEVIN'S FACILITIES PLAN, THE LONG-RANGE PLAN THAT YOU PUT TOGETHER AND ALL THE WORK THAT GOES INTO THAT.

I THINK THAT JUST HEARING THE NEED FOR OVERCROWDING AND HOW WE'RE GOING TO DEAL WITH THAT IS DEFINITELY A KEY DRIVER.

BUT WHEN I THINK ABOUT SAFETY, DID A LITTLE RESEARCH ON LEXI LOCKDOWN, IT HELPS TO SEXUALIZE HIGH-RISK AREAS TO PREVENT OR AT LEAST MITIGATE THREATS WHEN THEY HAPPEN IN SCHOOL AREAS.

THEY ARE 100 PERCENT CODE COMPLIANT AND THEY RETROFIT TO EXISTING DOOR TRIMS SO I JUST WANTED TO JUST SHARE THAT.

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE ALREADY AWARE OF IT, BUT SOME RESEARCH I WAS DOING ONLINE THAT REALLY APPEALED TO ME.

AS FAR AS THE BOND ITSELF GOES, I THINK THE KEY MESSAGE THAT I WANTED TO SHARE WITH THE BOARD TONIGHT IS THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO FINANCIALLY HEDGE AGAINST RISING INFLATION COSTS.

THE MORE WE CAN DO TO SECURE FUNDS TODAY BEFORE THE VALUE OF THE DOLLAR DEPRECIATES AND IT COSTS US MORE IN

[01:35:03]

THE FUTURE TO MAKE THOSE SAME INVESTMENTS THAT WE'RE PLANNING TO MAKE TODAY, THE BETTER OFF WE ARE TO ACT SOON.

THEN LASTLY, I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THAT I AM PLANNING TO DO A VISIT AT THE CASCADIA TECHNICAL ACADEMY AND HOPE TO BE A GUEST SPEAKER THERE TO THEIR BUSINESS STUDENTS.

THEY'RE VERY KEEN ON INTERNSHIPS.

I STARTED MY CAREER AT 15 YEARS OLD IN AN INTERNSHIP, AND IT WAS VERY REWARDING. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> SARAH, WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THE RETROFIT?

>> IT'S CALLED LEXI LOCKDOWN.

>> LEXI LOCKDOWN?

>> YES.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I CAN SEND YOU THE LINK.

>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

>> THANK YOU FOR THAT. I GUESS I DIDN'T REALLY LEAD WITH WE APPRECIATE ALL OUR CITIZENS COMMENTS AND WE ALLOW FOR THREE MINUTES AND SARAH WAS GRACIOUS THAT SHE DIDN'T GO NEAR THAT.

WE ARE RECORDING AND RICARDO'S GOT HIS LITTLE SHEETS OVER THERE.

JUST TO SHARE THAT FOR EVERYBODY, BUT WE HAVE SEASONED SPEAKERS AND SO NEXT UP IS BECKY BROILS.

AGAIN LEARNING HELP ME.

[LAUGHTER]

>> HELLO, EVERYONE. BECKY BROYLES AGAIN, TEACHER AT BATTLEGROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND ALSO WASHINGTON ART EDUCATION ASSOCIATION CO-PRESIDENT.

SPEAKING OF ART ADVOCACY, I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE BOARD A LAW THAT WAS PASSED THIS PAST LEGISLATIVE TERM CALLED HB 5878.

I'M HOPING THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE SOME FAMILIARITY WITH THAT LAW, BUT I WANTED TO GO OVER A FEW THINGS.

LISA HAS COPIES OF THE LAW FOR YOU, IF SHE WOULDN'T MIND PASSING THEM OUT.

I JUST WANT TO READ A COUPLE OF NUGGETS FROM THE NEW LAW JUST TO MAKE SURE AS WE MOVE INTO MAKING MASTER SCHEDULES AND ROTATIONS FOR NEXT YEAR, MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE FOLLOWING THE NEW STATE LAW IN REGARDS TO ARTS EDUCATION.

WE'VE BEEN WORKING HARD FOR ARTS EDUCATION FOR ALL AND REMINDING EVERYBODY THAT ARTS EDUCATION IS A CORE SUBJECT IN THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL SYSTEM.

IF YOU TURN TO THE BACK OF THE LAW, IT GETS INTO THE ACTUAL MEAT OF IT.

I WANT TO POINT TO ARTS INSTRUCTION.

MUST BE ACCESSIBLE BY ALL STUDENTS IN A MANNER THAT IS COMMENSURATE WITH INSTRUCTION IN OTHER CORE SUBJECTS.

NOW, I PRACTICED SAYING THE WORD COMMENSURATE.

I EVEN LOOKED IT UP.

COMMENSURATE MEANS IN PROPORTION TO.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TO DO SOME WORK IN WITHIN THE DISTRICT.

WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR ARTS PROGRAMS ARE FUNDED, JUST AS WELL AS OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS PROGRAMS, JUST AS WELL AS OUR MATH PROGRAMS. THAT CATALOG OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS CURRICULUM THAT YOU SAW PICTURES OF, IT WOULD BE FANTASTIC IF THERE WAS THAT SORT OF FUNDING PUT TOWARDS THE ARTS.

I'M NOT SAYING WE DON'T GET MONEY.

WE DO GET MONEY, BUT SOMETIMES WE DON'T FEEL THAT WE ARE AS IMPORTANT AS THE OTHER CORE SUBJECTS.

ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL STANDARDS AND THE STATE STANDARDS.

SO WE ARE A CORE SUBJECT, PERIOD.

[LAUGHTER] THE SECOND POINT I WANT TO HAVE YOU TAKE NOTE OF, THINKING OF STAFFING.

ARTS INSTRUCTION MUST BE PROVIDED BY EITHER A CERTIFICATED TEACHER WITH AN ENDORSEMENT IN THE RELEVANT ARTS DISCIPLINE, OR CERTIFICATED TEACHER ACTIVELY PURSUING THE ENDORSEMENT IN THE RELEVANT ARTS DISCIPLINE.

LUCKILY, WE ALREADY HAVE SOME CONTRACT LANGUAGE AROUND THIS.

IT MIGHT JUST NEED TO BE TIGHTENED UP A LITTLE BIT AND JUST SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND.

FYI, ALL YOU PARENTS OUT THERE LOOKING FOR A JOB, GO GET THAT ARTS ENDORSEMENT BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO NEED SOME TEACHERS MAYBE.

WE NEED TO FILL SOME SPOTS WITH CERTIFICATED TEACHERS WITH ENDORSEMENTS IN THE ARTS.

THE LAST BIG NUGGET OF THE LAW IS ARTS INSTRUCTORS SHALL BE CONSULTED AND GIVEN AN EQUAL PART IN THE DECISION PROCESS TO DETERMINE WHICH SPECIFIC VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS COURSES WILL BE GIVEN AT DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS OR OFFERED AT GIVEN GRADE LEVELS.

I JUST WANT TO PUT THE CALL OUT TO MAKE SURE AT THIS POINT IN TIME THAT WE ARE MAKING SURE THAT THE TEACHER'S VOICE, IT'S CONSULTED AND PART OF THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS AS WE'RE PREPARING MASTER SCHEDULES AND ROTATIONS FOR NEXT YEAR.

A LOT OF LEADERSHIPS IN SCHOOLS AND THE DEPARTMENT HEADS ARE CONSULTED.

[01:40:08]

I WAS GOING TO BE LESS THAN THREE MIN.

I'M SO SORRY. YEAH, THAT'S IT.

THANK YOU. [OVERLAPPING] WE'LL TALK AGAIN SOON.

>> NICE TRY.

[LAUGHTER] [BACKGROUND].

>> GOOD EVENING BOARD.

I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE ONLINE SCHOOL IDEA THAT'S PRESENTED TONIGHT AND ALSO THE ART TEACHERS WHO PRESENTED AND ALSO THE CURRICULUM ADOPTION PROCESSES THAT HAD BEEN GOING ON.

I'M A PART OF THESE SOCIAL STUDIES ADOPTION COMMITTEE.

IT'S BEEN REALLY FUN AND PRODUCTIVE TO BE IN THERE AND IT'S BEEN GREAT.

WHAT I'M EXCITED ABOUT TALKING ABOUT TODAY THOUGH, IS ABOUT SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

SOMETHING HAPPENED OVER THE WEEKEND THAT JUST PIQUED MY INTEREST EVEN MORE THAN BEFORE.

I GOT TO LISTEN IN ON A FACEBOOK DISCUSSION BETWEEN SOME SCHOOL DISTRICT PARENTS, SO AND SO DID THIS TO MY KID, NOTHING GOT DONE, AND THE KID SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXPELLED, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

IT WAS GOING ON LIKE THAT AND I REALIZED OUR PARENTS ALSO NEED SEL.

EVERYBODY NEEDS TO BELONG, INCLUDING KIDS THAT SOMETIMES OFFEND.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE LEARNING HOW TO REGULATE THEIR EMOTIONS.

HOW TO LISTEN TO EACH OTHER RESPECTFULLY AND NAVIGATE CONFLICTS AND DIFFERENCES WITHOUT WRITING EACH OTHER OFF, WITHOUT CANCELING EACH OTHER.

I USUALLY SPEAK HERE ABOUT LGBTQ KIDS.

IF WE ALL LEARNED AS A COMMUNITY, THIS SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING, LEARN HOW TO COMMUNICATE, HOW TO SELF-REGULATE, HOW TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER WITH OUR DIFFERENCES ACKNOWLEDGED, BUT STILL GIVING EACH OTHER THE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND SUPPORT, I DON'T HAVE TO BE STANDING HERE AS OFTEN.

[LAUGHTER] ANYWAY, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> THANK YOU, EUNICE.

>> ALICE [INAUDIBLE] SAYS MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.

>> THANK YOU, EUNICE.

>> THANK YOU. WELL,

[10. Consent Agenda]

THAT BRINGS US TO THE CONSENT AGENDA.

THERE ARE SIX ITEMS ON THE CONSENT AGENDA TONIGHT, INCLUDING THE APPROVAL, BUSINESS AND OPERATIONS, PERSONAL REPORT, STUDENT TRAVEL, FINANCIAL REPORTS, AND A SURPLUS OF MATERIALS ITEM.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE PULLED FROM THIS REPORT GIVEN MORE DISCUSSION OR ANYTHING ANYBODY WOULD LIKE TO TALK ABOUT BEFOREHAND? RICARDO, ANYTHING THAT CATCHES YOUR EYE?

>> NOT PARTICULARLY.

>> [BACKGROUND] NOT REALLY. WHEN I WAS LOOKING AT THE AGENDA, I WAS LOOKING MORE AT THE NEW BUSINESS AND IT LOOKS REALLY EXCITING.

>> WE'LL COME BACK TO YOU THERE THEN.

IF THERE'S NO QUESTIONS.

>> I WOULD MOVE THAT WE APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.

>> WE HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED.

I FORGOT TO SAY AYE. AYE [LAUGHTER].

MOTION PASSES, 4-0 [LAUGHTER].

I'M SUCH A MESS TONIGHT, OH MY GOD.

>> YOU'RE DOING FINE.

>> YOU'RE DOING GREAT.

>> THERE IS NO OLD BUSINESS.

THERE IS NEW BUSINESS.

[12. New Business]

FIRST UP ON NEW BUSINESS, WE HAVE NEW COURSE PROPOSAL FOR THE INTRODUCTION TO BAKING AND PASTRY ARTS BY CINDY ARNOLD.

[01:45:07]

>> [BACKGROUND]

>> GOOD EVENING BOARD. I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE BRITT PEDDLER.

HE IS OUR CULINARY ARTS TEACHER AT PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.

I WILL ALSO GO AHEAD AND INTRODUCE DON WILSON.

HE IS OUR CONSTRUCTION TRADES TEACHER GROUND.

THEY'RE HERE TONIGHT TO HELP ME ASK YOU FOR APPROVAL OF TWO NEW COURSES.

THE FIRST COURSE IS TO ADD INTRO TO BAKING AND PASTRY ARTS TO OUR CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM.

WE DID A LOT OF DISCUSSING WITH OUR ADVISORY ON REALIGNING OUR COURSES FOR CULINARY ARTS TO ALIGN MORE WITH INDUSTRY STANDARDS, AND AS PART OF THAT, WE WANT TO INCLUDE INTRO TO BAKING AND PASTRY ARTS.

I'LL GIVE BRITT AN OPPORTUNITY TO ADD MORE.

SORRY, I'M DISTRACTED BY THE DEALS UP HERE BECAUSE I, AS A TEACHER, IT FEELS LIKE PENCILS STUCK IN THEIR CEILING TILES.

I'M CERTAINLY DISTRACTED, BUT I TEACH CULINARY AT PRAIRIE.

GO FALCONS. I THINK YOU GUYS CAME OUT VISIT US.

YES INDEED.

[OVERLAPPING] WE FED YOU MORE THAN YOU COULD PROBABLY HANDLE.

WE'VE BEEN WANTING TO UPDATE THE NAMES FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS FROM FOODS 1, FOODS 2 BECAUSE YOU CAN THROW EASY MAC IN THE MICROWAVE AND YOU'VE MADE FOOD.

BUT WHEN YOU COME TO SCHOOL, WE WANT TO TEACH YOU THE SKILLS TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND GROW YOUR CAREER.

SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS JUST A NAME CHANGE ISN'T SOMETHING WE CAN DO WITHOUT RESTRUCTURING THINGS.

THAT'S WHERE THIS ALL CAME ABOUT.

WE'RE ALREADY TEACHING THE CULINARY, BUT IT'S UNDER A FOODS 1 TITLE.

WE WANT TO CHANGE THAT TO THE BAKING AND PASTRY.

THEN WE'RE GOING TO DO A CULINARY ARTS INSTEAD OF FOODS 2 AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE FOODS 3 WHICH WILL BE THIS IS THE LONG TITLE.

YEAH, THIS IS ADVANCED CULINARY ARTS, ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND SERVICE.

BUT THIS IS WHERE THINGS MAKE MY LIFE EASY BECAUSE THIS BECOMES A YEAR LONG, BUT WE ALSO BUILD IN THE CATERING AND THE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT THAT WE'RE ALREADY DOING BUT NOW WE HAVE THAT AVAILABLE.

BECAUSE WHEN WE HAVE FOLKS AT DISTRICT OFFICER LIKE, HEY, WE HAVE THIS THING AND WE WANT YOU CATER IT, AND I'M LIKE, HOW DO I MAKE THIS WORK IN MY CURRENT CURRICULUM WITHOUT DISTRACTING RICARDO? WE ALREADY HAVE IT BUILT INTO A PROGRAM.

FOR ME, IT'S A VERY EASY LIKE CHECK THE BOX, LET'S DO IT.

THEN THE LAST BIT OF THIS THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT IS THAT PATHWAY.

CURRENTLY WE'RE IN THE HUMAN SERVICES, AND WE'LL CONTINUE TO BE IN HUMAN SERVICES.

BUT STUDENTS CAN EARN A FULL TWO CREDITS AND THE CULINARY CLUSTER WITHOUT HAVING TO OUTSOURCE TO EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT OR ASL OR SOMETHING ELSE.

THEY CAN STAY IN MY CLASS FOR A FULL TWO YEARS TO GET THAT REQUIREMENT.

THAT'S THE SHORT AND SWEET BIT ABOUT IT. QUESTIONS.

IF I UNDERSTAND THIS CORRECTLY, YOU'RE ALREADY BASICALLY TEACHING EVERYTHING THAT YOU WOULD DOING HERE.

YOU'RE JUST RESTRUCTURING IN THE FORM OF RENAMING IT AND MAYBE PEELING SOME OUT AND CREATING A SEPARATE CLASS, THE THIRD LEVEL CLASS.

WELL, WE ALREADY HAVE A FOODS 3 RIGHT NOW WHERE WE'RE MORE REFINING SKILLS OF FOODS 1 AND FOODS 2.

BUT WE'RE GOING TO EXPAND THAT OUT AND TEACH THE BUSINESS SIDE OF IT, HOW TO COST A MENU, HOW TO BUILD A MENU, HOW TO CREATE A PROFIT AS A BUSINESS OWNER.

WE'RE NOT ABLE TO HIT THOSE COMPONENTS.

ANY ADDITIONAL RESOURCES ARE GOING TO BE REQUIRED IN ORDER TO DO THESE CLASSES? I THINK WE HAVE IT. I HAVE IT HERE. NO.

I MEAN, LIKE EQUIPMENT.

OH, CURRENTLY, NO.

CAN I TALK ABOUT THE SCHOOL TOUR THAT WE JUST DID? I MEAN, I'LL TALK ABOUT IT SINCE I BROUGHT IT UP.

YEAH, YOU CAN ANSWER A QUESTION.

JEANNE FRITZ, TEACHER AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL AND MYSELF LAST WEDNESDAY, WERE APPROVED TO GO ON TOUR SOME CAMPUSES AROUND CLARK COUNTY.

WE WENT TO HERITAGE WASHOUGAL, RICHFIELD AND MOUNTAIN VIEW, AND WE'RE ABLE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THEIR FACILITIES, WHICH ARE PRETTY INCREDIBLE.

AT SOME POINT WE WOULD LIKE TO BE ON THEIR PAGE AND SELFISHLY FOR ME, I WANT THAT.

BUT I WANT THAT FOR RICARDO SO HE HAS AN EQUITABLE EXPERIENCE IN A CULINARY CLASSROOM.

HE'S GETTING THE SAME EXPERIENCE THAT MAY BE A STUDENT AT RICH FIELD OR MOUNTAIN VIEW WOULD BE.

WE CAN TEACH THIS OUT OF OUR CURRENT FACILITIES.

IT WOULD BE A NICE GESTURE TO GET THOSE FACILITIES UPDATED AT SOME POINT THOUGH.

I WOULD PIGGYBACK ON THAT JUST A LITTLE BIT.

BECAUSE WHEN BRITT AND JEANE CAME AND PRESENTED TO OUR COMMITTEE, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT IS THE SWITCH FROM HOME ED INTO REALLY CHANGING THE MINDSET ABOUT SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS. I'VE BEEN IN BRITT'S SPACE AND IT LOOKS EXACTLY

[01:50:03]

LIKE THE HOME EC CLASS I HAD 30 PLUS YEARS AGO HERE AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

IT IS.

WELL, IT WAS A VG, BUT IT LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME.

I DO THINK THAT THAT IS A NEED FOR STUDENTS.

CERTAINLY AS WE CONTINUE TO LOOK AT NEEDS ACROSS THE DISTRICT, FACILITIES FOR SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS, THE NEEDS ARE GROWING JUST TO KEEP UP WITH WHAT THEIR EXPERIENCE WILL BE WHEN THEY CONTINUE ON IN THESE TYPES OF FIELDS AND THAT'S THE GOAL.

IT WAS A LOADED QUESTION.

I ALREADY KNEW THE ANSWER, BUT I JUST WANTED TO GET IT OUT THERE.

SURE.

BECAUSE I DID DO THE TOUR AND I SAW SOME ITEMS THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED A SAFETY HAZARD.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE BETTER EQUIPMENT IN THOSE FACILITIES, MAYBE A LITTLE BIT MORE ELBOW ROOM TO DO THE WORK, THINGS LIKE THAT.

AGAIN, I JUST WANT TO GET THAT OUT THERE SO THAT IT DOES BECOME A TOPIC OF CONVERSATION.

BECAUSE I DO THINK THAT WE CAN MAKE SOME IMPROVEMENTS TO GET WITH MORE IN LINE WITH THE REST OF THE COUNTY.

PERFECT.

I PROBABLY WOULD ARGUE THAT IN ORDER FOR US TO MAKE THE KINDS OF SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, WHICH I WHOLEHEARTEDLY SUPPORT, IT WOULD PROBABLY BE BEST TO BE PART OF A BOND.

I COULDN'T AGREE MORE DANNY.

NICE PLUG. OTHER QUESTIONS.

CAN I JUST SAY ONE MORE THING? WHAT SHELLY COMMENTED.

ONE OF THE QUESTIONS I ASKED ON THE TOUR, I ASKED EVERY TEACHER, WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHANGE WHEN YOU GOT THIS REMODEL? EVERY TEACHER TOLD ME, THE MENTALITY OF THE STUDENTS WALKING IN HERE FROM A FUN HOME EC, LET'S LIKE MAKE FOOD AND EAT IT VERSUS THIS IS A CAREER PATHWAY, JUST BY THE TITLE AND BY THE SPACE.

I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT FOR OUR SCHOOL.

YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

I'M ONLY PICKING OUT RICARDO BECAUSE HE'S A FALCON. [LAUGHTER] I ALSO TOOK FOODS 1, BUT I WAS A FREED KID.

WE HAVE A BIG PROGRAM AT PRAIRIE.

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU GUYS REMEMBER THE TOUR OR NOT.

WE HAVE TWO FULL CLASSROOMS AND WE'RE FULL.

DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? I DO HAVE ONE FOLLOW UP, SO I KNOW YOUR PROGRAM AND I KNOW CASCADIA TECH'S PROGRAM.

HOW WOULD THE CHANGES, THE ADVANCEMENTS IN THIS ONE COMPARED TO THAT? BECAUSE I HAVEN'T SEEN THESE OTHER SCHOOLS AND THEIR FACILITIES, SO I ONLY HAVE THAT AS A POINT OF REFERENCE.

AS FAR AS OUR SPACE, IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE ASKING OR THE PRODUCT, THE STUDENTS? I GUESS MORE OF PREPARATION FOR THE NEXT LEVEL.

I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE, A LOT OF KIDS WHO GO TO CASCADIA TECH PROCEED ON WITH A CULINARY CAREER, GOING ON TO CULINARY COLLEGE, ISOLATED.

WHETHER THAT'S BAKING, YOU FIND YOUR NICHE.

YOU ARE EITHER A BAKER OR YOU'RE A CHEF.

HOPEFULLY I JUST DIDN'T INSULT A BAKER.

MY PARENTS.

CHEF AND BAKER. [LAUGHTER] I'M JUST CURIOUS, DOES THIS GIVE STUDENTS MORE OF AN OPTION TO TAKE THAT PATH WITHOUT HAVING TO GO OUTSIDE OF OUR DISTRICT? I'LL ANSWER. FOR ME AT PRAIRIE, I KNOW THAT OUR STUDENTS, CASCADIA IS THE NEXT STEP AFTER THEY'VE COMPLETED OUR PROGRAM.

EXTENDING IT OUT AN EXTRA SIX MONTHS IN THAT FOODS 3 OR MAKING INTO A YEAR LONG PROGRAM, WE'RE GOING TO BUILD THE HOLD ON TO THOSE STUDENTS A LITTLE BIT LONGER.

FOR ME I APPRECIATE CASCADIA TECH, BUT I ALSO SOMETIMES FEEL THAT MAYBE THEY'RE TAKING STUDENTS AWAY FROM ME WHERE I'D RATHER HAVE THEM IN MY CLASSROOM.

I DON'T WANT TO USE THE WORD POUCH BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THAT'S NOT RIGHT, BUT I THINK IT'S A BENEFIT TO BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO HAVE THIS PROGRAM JUST TO CAPTURE THESE STUDENTS AND KEEP THEM HERE BEFORE THEY GO AWAY TI CASCADIA TECH.

THAT COULD GIVE KIDS POTENTIALLY A FOUR YEARS OF BEING ABLE TO DO CULINARY ARTS IN HIGH-SCHOOL REALLY BY DOING TWO YEARS WITH OUR PROGRAM AND THEN DOING TWO MORE YEARS AT CASCADIA TECH.

IT'S AMAZING. GREAT OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS.

I'M JUST GOING TO TELL ONE MORE THING.

I KNOW IT'S LIKE, I KNOW.

RICARDO [INAUDIBLE] SO I SEE YOU [INAUDIBLE].

THIS PROGRAM, IT CAPTURES THE STUDENT THAT I WAS.

I WASN'T A GREAT STUDENT.

I KEPT GREAT GRADES SO THAT I COULD PLAY SPORTS, BUT GOING TO MATH AND ENGLISH, AND HISTORY AND SCIENCE, THOSE WEREN'T FUN FOR ME.

I STAYED IN SCHOOL BECAUSE I COULD GO TO WOOD SHOP, AND METALS AND CULINARY.

THOSE ARE THE CLASSES THAT TO ME MEAN MOST.

IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE KEEP THOSE AND EXTEND THOSE AND JUST GIVE MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE STUDENTS.

I'LL STOP IF YOU QUESTIONS ASK, BUT OTHERWISE I'M ALL DONE.

ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS? I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE NEW COURSE TITLE, INTRODUCTION TO BAKING AND PASTRY ARTS.

WE HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE NEW COURSE TITLED THE INTRODUCTION TO BAKING AND PASTRY ARTS.

[01:55:01]

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY AYE.

AYE.

ALL THOSE OPPOSED.

MOTION PASSES FOUR TO ZERO.

THANK YOU.

ALL RIGHT AND THEN NEXT UP, WE HAVE A PROPOSAL FOR CONSTRUCTION GEOMETRY, AGAIN WITH [INAUDIBLE]. THANK YOU.

>> THIS IS A CLASS THAT WE'VE ALREADY STARTED CONSTRUCTION TRADES AT BATTLE GROUND HIGH-SCHOOL.

WE'VE BEEN DOING IT FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW AND WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS MAKE IT A BLOCK CLASS, SO TWO PERIODS AND INCLUDE GEOMETRY AS PART OF THE CREDIT.

STUDENTS WOULD GET ONE CREDIT IN GEOMETRY AND THEN ALSO GET A CREDIT IN CONSTRUCTION TRADES ON THE CLASSES, GEOMETRY AND CONSTRUCTION, SO TWO PERIOD BLOCK SOMETIMES STUDENTS WOULD HAVE TWO PERIODS OF MATHS.

SOMETIMES THEY WOULD HAVE TWO SOLID PERIODS OF CONSTRUCTION, SOMETIMES IT WOULD FLOW, YOU'D HAVE THEM PART MATH AND PART CONSTRUCTION, SO IT FLOWS.

DAN, WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADD ANYMORE?

>> SURE, HI GOOD EVENING.

MY BACKGROUND IS IN CONSTRUCTION BEFORE I BECAME A TEACHER.

I USED TO BUILD HOUSES AND FOR ME, GEOMETRY IS LIKE BUILDING HOUSES AND BUILDING BUILDINGS IS THE EXPRESSION OF GEOMETRY, THE REAL-LIFE EXPRESSION.

IT'S JUST A NATURAL FIT FOR ME AND I LIKE THE IDEA THAT STUDENTS WILL COLLABORATE AND THINK OF IT AS A COLLABORATIVE PROCESS THAT THE THINGS THEY'RE LEARNING ON THE ACADEMIC SIDE OF SCHOOL ARE ALSO BEING APPLIED IN THE MORE TECHNICAL AREAS.

I THINK IT'S PART OF MAKING BATTLEGROUND MORE OF A HUB OF THESE PROGRAMS THAT ARE GOING TO SEND KIDS DIRECTLY OUT INTO THE TRADES BUT THEY CAN ALSO USE THE SAME KNOWLEDGE TO HEAD INTO COLLEGE AND ADVANCED DEGREES IF THEY WANT TO DO THAT.

BUT THE TWO THINGS CAN EXIST TOGETHER AND I THINK WE HAVE A LOT OF KIDS WHO ARE GOING TO GO RIGHT TO WORK AND SO I THINK A CLASS LIKE THIS AFTER 10TH GRADE, THEY'LL BE READY TO HIT THE JOB MARKET AND DO THINGS THEY ALREADY WANT TO DO THAT.

HOPEFULLY, WE CAN KEEP THEM IN SCHOOL TO KEEP WORKING ON OUR PROGRAMS. BUT I LIKE IT BECAUSE I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A HANDS-ON PERSON, BUT I ALSO LIKE ACADEMICS AND I LIKE TO TAKE THIS STUFF THAT I'M LEARNING ACADEMICALLY AND GO MAKE SOMETHING WITH THAT INFORMATION OR GO SEE HOW IT WORKS IN THE REAL-WORLD AND I THINK THIS IS A PROGRAM THAT'S BEING TAUGHT IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND OVER IN OREGON, AND AROUND THE COUNTRY AND IT'S BEEN REALLY SUCCESSFUL.

NOT JUST IN BRINGING IN KIDS WHO WANT TO GO INTO CONSTRUCTION, BUT KIDS WHO ARE ALSO INTERESTED IN THE SCIENCE SIDE OF THINGS OR THE MATHS SIDE OF THINGS OR EVEN JUST THE DESIGN SIDE OF THINGS BUT I WANT TO GO OUT AND ACTUALLY SEE THAT STUFF BUILT IN THE REAL-WORLD.

I'M PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT IT.

I THINK RIGHT NOW WE HAVE MOST OF MY STUDENTS IN CONSTRUCTION ARE STUDENTS WHO KNOW THEY'RE GOING TO GO OUT INTO THE TRADES AFTER THEY GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND THAT'S GREAT.

I THINK WE CAN BRING MORE OF THOSE KIDS AND THAT MAYBE DON'T THINK THAT THEY'RE LOOKING TO GET OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

I THINK IF WE CAN KEEP THEM IN AND HAVE SEE THAT THEY'RE DOING SOMETHING REALLY VALUABLE IN SCHOOL, WE'LL KEEP THEM BUT I THINK WE ALSO, WE'LL BRING IN SOME OTHER STUDENTS WHO MIGHT NOT NORMALLY TAKE THESE CLASSES.

I THINK THE MATH DEPARTMENT SEEMS PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT THE COLLABORATION TOO.

>> WOULD THIS BE AN ALTERNATIVE TO GEOMETRY IN THE MATH PROGRESSION?

>> YEAH, IT WOULD BE AND THE MATH DEPARTMENT HAS PROVED THAT AS WELL AND THEY'RE EXCITED ABOUT IT.

>> BECAUSE IT IS CONSTRUCTION GEOMETRY, YOU'RE GOING TO USE CONSTRUCTION TRADES AS THE BASIS OF UNDERSTANDING FOR THESE COMPREHENSION PORTION OF QUESTIONS OR IS THERE GOING TO BE PRIMARILY RESIDENTIAL TYPE CONSTRUCTION OR YOU HAVE HAD ANYTHING ELSE IN MIND?

>> RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION.

THAT'S HOW IT'S TYPICALLY TAUGHT.

>> OKAY. MY BACKGROUND IS CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT.

I'M A DIFFERENT CONSTRUCTION MANAGER.

I'M A HEAVY CIVIL ESTIMATOR AND I WAS HOPING YOU WOULD SAY CIVIL BECAUSE THE GEOMETRY ENCOMPASSED IN THAT ASPECT OF CONSTRUCTION IS HUGE.

I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO LOOK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX OF JUST RESIDENTIAL.

I UNDERSTAND THAT'S YOUR BACKGROUND.

THAT'S WHAT YOU KNOW BUT THERE IS OTHER OPTIONS OUT THERE AS WELL, SO LOOK INTO THAT.

>> ALSO, GEOMETRY IS USUALLY TAUGHT IN 10TH GRADE AND MOST OF MY WOOD 1, MY INTRODUCTION TO WOODWORKING STUDENTS ARE 9TH GRADERS, NOT ALL OF THEM, BUT THE BULK OF THEM ARE AND SO WHAT I'M HOPING WILL HAPPEN IS THAT STUDENTS WILL TAKE.

THERE'S A LOT OF STUDENTS WHO TAKE WOOD 1 WHO DON'T THEN TAKE THE OTHER CONSTRUCTION CLASSES THAT WE HAVE, ADVANCED WOOD OR HVAC, ELECTRICAL, PLUMBING, OR THE CONSTRUCTION CLASS I TEACH.

BUT I'M HOPING THAT WITH ALL THESE STUDENTS TAKING INTRODUCTION TO WOODWORKING IN 9TH GRADE, THEN THEY TAKE CONSTRUCTION GEOMETRY IN 10TH GRADE, GIVES THEM A LOT OF ROOM TO EXPLORE SOME OTHER TOPICS WITHIN THE OTHER CLASSES THEY TAKE.

LET'S SAY THEY TAKE PHYSICS AND THEY WANT TO EXPLORE SOME MORE COMPLEX CONCEPTS ABOUT FORCES IN GEOMETRY.

I THINK IT OPENS UP A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES THAT ALSO PUTS UP A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES

[02:00:04]

FOR ME TO HELP STUDENTS MAYBE SET UP A SPECIAL STUDIES UNIT.

LIKE RIGHT NOW, I DON'T KNOW WHAT I MIGHT DO WITH THOSE 11TH AND 12TH GRADE STUDENTS WHO WANT TO KEEP DOING CONSTRUCTION BUT IT'S POSSIBLE WE MOVE THEM INTO A LEADERSHIP ROLE WHERE THEY CONTINUE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CLASS BUT THEY'RE REALLY FOCUSING ON CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT, THAT THING.

THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS IT CAN GO. [OVERLAPPING]

>> YEAH, ABSOLUTELY.

>> KIDS WANT TO BE ARCHITECTS, THEY WANT TO BE ENGINEERS, INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS.

THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THEY CAN DO.

OR IF THEY WANT TO GO OUT AND START BANGING NAILS RIGHT AWAY, THEY'RE GOING TO KNOW MORE THAN THAT ALL THE OTHER 18-YEAR-OLDS ON THE JOB OR SOMEONE ELSE ON THE JOB

>> WELL, I'M HAPPY TO COLLABORATE IF YOU EVER HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR WANT SOME INSIGHT ON THE CIVIL SIDE.

>> THERE'S GOING TO BE A STUFF TO SEE, WE'RE GOING TO BE BUILDING SOMETHING.

WE'RE NOT SURE YET WHAT, BUT BUILDING THINGS OUTSIDE THAT OTHER STUDENTS WILL SEE AND I THINK MAKE PEOPLE EXCITED ABOUT IT.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

>> TRY TO KEEP IT TIDY.

>> IS THIS A CO-TEACH WITH A MEMBER OF THE MATH DEPARTMENT ARE YOU DOING BOTH?

>> NO. MATT GAMBLIN RIGHT NOW IS THE TEACHER WHO STEPPED UP IN THE MATH DEPARTMENT TO TEACH WITH ME AND HE SPENDS A LOT OF TIME IN THE WOODSHOP.

HE ALREADY HAS.

I AM NOT A CERTIFIED MATH TEACHER, BUT I AM A MATH NERD.

>> I REALLY ENDORSED THAT WHEN STUDENTS GET TO SEE TWO TEACHERS WORKING TOGETHER SHARING THEIR SUBJECT BUT I THINK IT'S POWERFUL.

>> I'M INTERESTED IN COLLABORATING WITH OTHER TEACHERS IN THE SCHOOL.

SOMETIMES THEY DON'T GET AWAY FROM THE JAYWING VERY MUCH, BUT I THINK THERE'S A LOT OF OPPORTUNITY TO COLLABORATE WITH THE ART DEPARTMENT AND WITH THE PHYSICS DEPARTMENT.

I WOULD LOVE TO DO A LESSON AND FORCES IN STRUCTURES WITH THEM SOME TIME, BUT THAT'S DOWN THE ROAD.

>> ONE STEP AT A TIME.

>> I JUST HAVE TO SAY, I REALLY APPRECIATE THIS BECAUSE I FEEL I HAVE PRIDE THAT WE HAVE A REALLY ROBUST CTE DEPARTMENT, BUT JUST ALLOWING STUDENTS TO SIMULTANEOUSLY GET THEIR CREDITS WHILE PURSUING THEIR GOALS IN TRADE, THEY'RE GOING INTO TRADE.

JUST NOT HAVING TO INTERRUPT THAT PROCESS BY TAKING GEOMETRY AND HAVING IN THAT OPTION.

I THINK THAT'S REALLY IMPRESSIVE, SO THANK YOU.

>> WOULD YOU TAKE THAT CLASS IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE?

>> ME PERSONALLY? [LAUGHTER] I PROBABLY WOULDN'T, BUT HAVING THAT OPTION AVAILABLE, YEAH.

>> GOOD.

>> CONSTRUCTION, I DON'T KNOW IF I COULD GRASP THAT.

>> WE'LL SEE WHEN PEOPLE ARE THERE.

>> I WOULD'VE TAKEN IT.

[OVERLAPPING] GEOMETRY IS THE ONLY MATH CLASS I EVER STRUGGLED TO DO.

>> THIS A LOT OF HIGH SCHOOLS ARE ALSO EVERGREEN HIGH SCHOOL TEACHES THIS CLASS AND HAS BEEN FOR YEARS.

BENSON DOWN IN PORTLAND TEACHES THIS CLASS.

THERE'S SOME OTHER CLASSES AROUND OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS AROUND THEIR TEACHING IT AND STUDENTS SEEM TO LOVE IT, THEY DO ALL THINGS.

>> IF WE WERE TO VOTE AND APPROVE THIS CLASS TODAY, WHEN WOULD IT FIRST BE OFFERED?

>> IN THE FALL.

>> THIS COMING FALL?

>> THEN, YOU KNOW WHAT? I THINK IT'LL TAKE A COUPLE OF YEARS TO GET THE EQUIPMENT AND SPACE WE NEED, THE FACILITIES, WE NEED IT.

HAVE A PLACE TO START. START WITH A SMALL PROJECT, AND EVENTUALLY AT [INAUDIBLE] THEY'D BUILD A HOUSE EVERY YEAR.

I KNOW AT ONE POINT THEY DID THAT HERE AT BATTLE GROUND YEARS AGO.

IT'S POSSIBLE MY GOAL IS THAT WE DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT AGAIN.

>> VERY COOL.

>> ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS?

>> I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE NEW COURSE TITLED CONSTRUCTION GEOMETRY.

>> WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR TO APPROVE THE NEW COURSE TITLED CONSTRUCTION GEOMETRY.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR PLEASE SAY AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED. ANY OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES FOUR TO ZERO. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> NEXT UP ON NEW BUSINESS, WE HAVE A NEW COURSE PROPOSAL FOR AN AP PRECALCULUS CLASS WITH [INAUDIBLE].

>> ON BEHALF OF MATH TEACHERS AT EACH OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, I'M HERE TO PROPOSE ADVANCED PLACEMENT PRECALCULUS.

IT'S A UNIQUE PROPOSAL IN THAT WE ALREADY OFFER PRECALCULUS.

IT'S A LONGSTANDING MATH COURSE, TYPICALLY A FOURTH-YEAR HIGH-SCHOOL MATH CREDIT.

BUT THE COLLEGE BOARD IS NOW [NOISE] OFFERING PRECALCULUS AS AN ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSE.

STUDENTS WOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE THE AP EXAM AND POTENTIALLY GET COLLEGE CREDIT FOR THAT.

LARRY CARLTON AT KHAN ACADEMY ACTUALLY SUBMITTED THE FORMAL PROPOSAL,

[02:05:01]

BUT IT WOULD BE TAUGHT AT ALL OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS.

BASICALLY IT WILL JUST CHANGE THE TITLE INSTEAD OF PRECALC IT WILL BE AP PRECALC, AND THEN IT JUST OFFERS THE OPTION FOR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THE AP EXAM AND POTENTIALLY GET COLLEGE CREDIT FOR IT. ANY QUESTIONS?

>> ARE THERE TYPICALLY MULTIPLE CLASSES CURRENTLY?

>> YEAH. I THINK MOST OF OUR [INAUDIBLE] THERE'S USUALLY TWO PRECALCULUS CLASSES.

>> AT LEAST ONE OF THOSE WOULD BE DESIGNATED?

>> YEAH.

>> OKAY.

>> WELL, I THINK ALL THE PRECALC [OVERLAPPING].

IF THE STUDENTS ARE GOING TO TAKE PRE-CALC, IT DOESN'T FORCE STUDENTS TO TAKE THE AP EXAM, BUT IT WOULD GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY.

ACTUALLY THE COLLEGE BOARD THEIR RATIONALE FOR THIS IS TO JUST GET ACCESS TO COLLEGE PLACEMENT CREDIT WITHOUT HAVING.

CALCULUS IS BASICALLY A FIFTH YEAR HIGH SCHOOL MATH COURSE, AND SO THIS WOULD ALLOW ACCESS AT THE SENIOR LEVEL, IF YOU WILL.

>> MY FRESHMAN YEAR TOOK A COMBINED ALGEBRA 2 AND PRECALCULUS AND THEN WENT INTO AP CALCULUS AFTER THAT.

WOULD THAT ALSO BE REPLACED BY [OVERLAPPING]

>> THAT WAS ABOUT OUR HIGH SCHOOL SET, THAT'S THE ALGEBRA 2 PRE-CALC.

THAT WOULD STAY THE SAME.

BECAUSE MOST STUDENTS THAT ARE IN THAT TRACK, YOU'RE TAKING BASICALLY PRECALCULUS AS A FRESHMAN.

YEAH. YOU COULD ACTUALLY IF YOU WANTED TO ACCESS THE AP EXAM, YOU COULD PROBABLY STILL TAKE THE AP EXAM IN PRE-CALC.

BUT ANYWAY, THAT COURSE THAT COMBINES THE ALGEBRA 2 AND THE PRE-CALC WILL JUST STAY THE SAME.

>> IT WOULD BE LIKE AN HONORS OPTION AND THEN AP OPTION AS WELL?

>> YEAH.

>> THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO EXPAND OUR ACCESS TO AP PROGRAMS, AND THIS IS JUST ANOTHER WAY TO DO THAT.

I THINK IT'S A HIGHLY IN FAVOR.

>> I HAVE TO SAY UNTIL NOW THERE ARE ONLY TWO MAP API OPTIONS IN UPPER HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.

BECAUSE I WAS IN A SPIDER IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, SO I WAS FOLLOWING THAT PATHWAY, AND ANYONE WHO DID FOLLOW THAT PATHWAY JUST REACHED THE END OF THE MATH PATHWAY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL, SO I THINK THIS IS [OVERLAPPING].

>> NO, IT'S GOING TO OPEN UP ADVANCED PLACEMENT OPTIONS IN MATHEMATICS PRIOR TO CALCULUS AND AP STATS.

PRETTY MUCH IF YOU TAKE THE AP PRE-CALCULUS COURSE, THAT WOULD TRANSLATE TO EITHER COLLEGE PRE-CALCULUS OR SOMETIMES COLLEGE ALGEBRA.

BASICALLY, IT'S ANYTHING PREREQUISITE TO CALCULUS CLASS IN COLLEGE.

>> ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS?

>> I MOVE THAT WE APPROVE THE NEW COURSE TITLED AP PRE-CALCULUS.

>> THEN WE HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE NEW COURSE CALLED AP PRECALCULUS.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED. NONE. MOTION PASSES FOUR TO ZERO.

>> THANKS DAVE.

>> THANK YOU. NEXT UP ON THE LIST, WE HAVE APPROVAL OF NEW INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS.

>> I LIKE THE WAY YOU GUYS WORK TOGETHER.

>> YEAH.

>> TRADE-OFF. [LAUGHTER] WE'D BEEN ENOUGH.

HELLO. WE ARE HERE THIS EVENING TO HAVE YOU APPROVE TWO NEW MEMBERS TO THE INSTRUCTION MATERIALS COMMITTEE, AND WE'VE MENTIONED THAT IN THE PRESENTATION EARLIER.

THAT IS THE GROUP THAT OVERSEES THE ADOPTION PROCESS.

THEY DON'T ACTUALLY MAKE ANY DECISIONS ABOUT THE CURRICULUM THAT WE ARE GOING TO PUT IN FRONT OF THE BOARD IS JUST WHETHER OR NOT WE DID THINGS IN ORDER AND FOLLOWED ALL THE RULES FOR ADOPTION.

WE HAVE A COUPLE OF OPENINGS.

WE HAD A TEACHER WHO RESIGNED THEIR POSITION, AND THEN WE HAD AN ADMINISTRATOR WHO LEFT THE DISTRICT, AND SO WE NEED TO FILL THOSE POSITIONS.

WE HAD 10 APPLICANTS FOR THE TEACHER POSITION, AND WE ARE HERE THIS EVENING TO RECOMMEND KATHY OGG AS THE REPLACEMENT FOR THE TEACHER POSITION, AND THEN WE HAD ONLY ONE BUILDING ADMINISTRATORS THEY ARE SUPER BUSY.

WE HAVE ONE PERSON.

LESLIE COREY IS THE PERSON WE WOULD LIKE TO REPLACE OUR ADMIN POSITION.

I'M HERE TO ASK FOR YOUR APPROVAL FOR THOSE TWO PEOPLE.

ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

>> I MOVE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE APPOINTMENT

[02:10:01]

OF NEW INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS COMMITTEE MEMBERS.

>> ANOTHER MOTION ON THE FLOOR.

THIS TIME TO APPROVE THE NEW INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS COMMITTEE MEMBERS.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ALL THOSE OPPOSED.

ANY OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES FOUR TO ZERO.

>> THANK YOU KATHY.

>> KATHY, IS IT PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY?

>> THANK YOU.

>> OUR LAST NEW BUSINESS FOR THE EVENING IS THE APPROVAL OF A CONVERGENT CONTRACTS FOR THE ENTRY SECURITY PROJECTS. MR. JONAH.

>> GOOD EVENING.

>> GOOD EVENING.

>> BEFORE YOU ON THIS AGENDA ITEM, WE'RE CONTINUING ON OUR ENTRY SECURITY PROJECTS.

I HAVE EIGHT OF THEM HERE.

I HAD SIGNED THEM. THEY'RE ALL UNDER 150,000 SENTIMENT TO GET AN AGENDA AND IT'S LIKE, THEY ALMOST ADD UP TO A MILLION DOLLARS.

WE BETTER PUT THIS INSTEAD AS AN ITEM ON THE AGENDA.

WE'VE TOURED EVERYONE NOW EXCEPT BATTLEGROUND HIGH SCHOOL.

THIS WILL BE YET EXCEPT FOR BATTLEGROUND HIGH, PRAIRIE HIGH, AND LAUREN THAT WE ALSO JUST TOURED.

THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT ARE REMAINING TO COME TO YOU, BUT THESE ARE FOR THE ENTRY PROJECTS AT RIVER HOMELINK, AMBOY MIDDLE, YAKULT PRIMARY, CHIEF MIDDLE, DAYBREAK MIDDLE, TEWKS VALLEY PRIMARY, TEWKS VALLEY MIDDLE, AND PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE.

YOU CAN SEE ALL THE AMOUNTS THERE AND THEY VARY DEPENDING ON WHAT YEAR THEY WERE BUILT AND HOW MANY SCHOOLS ARE OBVIOUSLY CHEAPER TO DO BECAUSE A LOT OF THE HARDWARE IS ALREADY THERE.

BUT THEY'RE ALL READY ARRANGED THAT THEY'VE ALL BEEN IN.

IF YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ON ANY OF THEM.

I HOPE YOU DON'T. I DIDN'T BRING ON MY CONTRACT. [LAUGHTER] GO AHEAD.

>> KEVIN, DO YOU HAVE A ROM FOR BATTLEGROUND AND PRAIRIE.

>> PRAIRIE IS GOING TO BE 100 GRAND.

BATTLEGROUND CAN BE MORE.

IT WON'T HIT 200, BUT [OVERLAPPING]

>> JUST TAKE AT THAT ONCE WE GET OVER THAT NUMBER.

>> I ASSUME YOU'LL GO THROUGH THE SAME SOURCE WELL, CONTACT WITH THEM.

>> IT'S JUST BEEN GREAT TEAM.

WE'VE TOURED NOW ALL OF OUR BUILDINGS EXCEPT FOR BATTLEGROUND HIGH, WE'RE ALL ON THE SAME PAGE.

WE ALREADY KNOW WHAT WE WANT TO DO, SO IT'S BEEN A GREAT FIRM TO WORK WITH.

WE WORKED WITH THEM A LOT IN THE PAST, BUT NOT ON A PROJECT LIKE THIS.

>> WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE, WE'LL BE APPROACHING OVER TWO MILLION DOLLARS.

>> SOMEWHERE IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD.

>> DEFINITELY NEEDED. I AGREE WITH THAT.

>> WE'VE BEEN VERY WELL-RECEIVED AT ALL THE SCHOOLS.

>> WILL YOU SHARE WHY WE CAN GO TO CONVERGENT WITH ALL OF THESE VERSUS A BID PROCESS.

>> THEY ARE [OVERLAPPING].

>> THIRTY THOUSAND FOOT VIEW.

[LAUGHTER]

>> THEY ARE A SOLE SOURCE ON OUR LINNELL SYSTEM WHICH INTEGRATES ALL THE CAMERAS IN THE SECURITY.

THEY'RE THE AREAS PERSON FOR WORKING ON THE LINNELL SYSTEM.

THEY'VE ALSO RECENTLY, IT WOULD BE A NIGHTMARE TO TRY TO DO THIS IN A DIFFERENT WAY AS A BID PROJECT, I WOULD BE ANOTHER YEAR AWAY.

THIS IS BASICALLY A DESIGN BUILD.

WE BUY SOURCE WELL, WE'VE BOUGHT ALL OF OUR MODULARS THROUGH THEM.

THIS IS A VERY GOOD WAY TO CONTROL YOUR QUALITY AND WHO'S DOING WORK.

>> KEEPS THE EQUIPMENT UNIFORM AS WELL.

ANYBODY ELSE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? ENTERTAIN A MOTION.

>> SCROLL TO THE TOP, TO TALK THROUGH THE MOTION.

I RECOMMEND THAT BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVED THE CONTRACTS WITH CONVERGENT FOR THE ENTRY SECURITY PROJECTS.

>> WE HAVE OUR FINAL MOTION ON THE FLOOR FOR THE CONTRACTS TO WITH CONVERGENT FOR THE ENTRY SECURITY PROJECTS.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE SAY AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ANY OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES FOUR TO ZERO.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, KEVIN.

>> WE'RE ALMOST THERE. FUTURE EVENTS.

[13. Future Agenda Items and Board Events]

WE HAVE COMING UP, A VERY WELCOMED BREAK FOR ALL.

[02:15:04]

I'M SURE. I DO HAVE ONE IF NO ONE ELSE HAS ANYTHING TO BRING UP OR IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO FIRST.

>> NOT KNOWING IF IT'S THE SAME ONE OR NOT AS THE NEWLY ELECTED PRESIDENT JUST TO REMINDER, YOU GET A CHANCE TO REASSIGN COMMITTEES. [OVERLAPPING]

>> THAT'S THE ONE.

>> THEN WE'RE ON THE SAME PAGE.

[LAUGHTER] GREAT.

>> ANYBODY ELSE BEFORE WE GO THERE? WE DO HAVE SEVERAL COMMITTEES.

I'LL START WITH WIAA.

I KNOW DIRECTOR CHAMPAGNE WOULD LIKE TO REMAIN AS A WIAA REP, AND I THINK AS LONG AS NOBODY IS OPPOSED TO THAT, WE SHALL LEAVE HIM THERE TO DO ALL THINGS RELATED TO SPORTS.

I'M ON THE AUDIT COMMITTEE AND I SERVE WITH DIRECTOR SNITELY.

I'M GOING TO BE STEPPING DOWN FROM THE AUDIT COMMITTEE AND I WOULD LIKE TO APPOINT DIRECTOR WATSON TO TAKE MY PLACE.

THEN OUR AUDIT COMMITTEE SPLITS TERMS BETWEEN SO THAT THERE'S ALWAYS A STAGGERED APPROACH, SO ONE WILL THAT APPOINTMENT WILL BE EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1ST, AND THEN IT WILL COME UP AGAIN IN JUNE FOR DIRECTORS SNITELY'S POSITION.

DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER COMMITTEES THAT OH, BATTLEGROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION IS THE OTHER COMMITTEE THAT WE SHOULD HAVE SOMEONE JOIN.

I WOULD LIKE TO STEP DOWN FROM THAT ONE AS WELL IF THERE IS A WILLING PARTICIPANT TO TAKE ON THAT.

>> WHEN DID THEY MEET?

>> EVERY OTHER MONTH? ON A THURSDAY EVENING OVER ZOOM, AND I COULD TELL YOU THE DATE IF I WAS BETTER PREPARED.

>> I'LL TAKE THAT ON, FOR THE TIME BEING.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. DIRECTOR HENDRICKSON HAS OFFERED TO TAKE ON BATTLEGROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION AS A BOARD REPRESENTATIVE.

I THINK WE HAVE OUR ASSIGNMENTS.

DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER FUTURE EVENTS WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT? WITH THAT, THANK YOU ALL FOR HANGING IN THERE WITH US.

HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, HOWEVER YOU CELEBRATE, PLEASE ENJOY, AND WE WILL SEE ALL OF YOU IN JANUARY, AND WE ARE ADJOURNED. [NOISE]
