I LOVE IT WHEN WE GET TO START OFF.I KNOW SPECIAL EVENTS LIKE THIS.
I SEE SOME OLD FAMILIAR FACES.
IN THE AUDIENCE. AND SO GLAD YOU'RE HERE.
SO, YEAH, MR. WATERS, WE'RE VERY EXCITED TODAY.
TODAY, THE FRIENDS OF THE BATTLE GROUND COMMUNITY LIBRARY ARE GOING TO BE MAKING A DONATION OF BOOKS RELATING THE STORY OF THE NAMING OF BATTLE GROUND. DON HIGGINS IS THE RESEARCHER AND AUTHOR OF PEACE WINS AT THE BATTLE GROUND 1855, AFTER MR. HIGGINS ASSEMBLED A HISTORY'S MYSTERIES EXHIBIT AT THE LIBRARY A FEW YEARS AGO, HE WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE COMPLETE STORY THAT HAD EVER BEEN TOLD.
[00:05:02]
SO RIGHT NOW I'D LIKE TO, ON BEHALF OF THE FRIENDS OF THE BATTLE GROUND COMMUNITY LIBRARY, I'D LIKE TO WELCOME DON AND JANE HIGGINS AND LOUISE TUCKER, WHO WILL BE PRESENTING A DONATION OF PEACE WINS AT BATTLE GROUND 1855.AND THANK YOU FOR SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE TODAY WITH US.
I THINK WE'RE IN A MUCH SMALLER ROOM, RIGHT? I WOULD LIKE TO.
YEAH, DON, GO AHEAD. THANK YOU FOR INVITING US.
WE KNEW VIRTUALLY NOTHING ABOUT THE INDIAN SIDE.
WE KNEW THE NAME OF CHIEF UMTUCH, BUT ABOUT HARDLY ANYONE ELSE.
AND WITH HEART SURGERY AND COVID, I HAD SOME TIME ON MY HANDS.
AND WITH EDITORS, LIKE THE LOCAL HISTORIAN AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE LIBRARY BOARD, I COULD GET BY WITH NOTHING. BUT I DID WORK A GREAT DEAL IN RESEARCHING OLD TEXTS, A GREAT DEAL OF INFORMATION ONLINE, AND WE WERE ABLE TO PUT TOGETHER A NEW STORY.
IT'S THE SAME STORY THAT'S BEEN OUT THERE FOR 167 YEARS, BUT IT HAS SOME ADDITIONS.
IT'S BEAUTIFUL. IT'S IT'S NOT FOR SALE.
AND THERE'S LOTS OF INFORMATION HERE.
THAT IS WHAT WE'VE CALLED NEW HISTORY.
THERE'S INDIAN NARRATIVES THAT WERE 100 YEARS OLD.
THEY WERE WRITTEN BY LUCELLAS QUARTER, WHO WAS A HISTORIAN IN YAKIMA.
HE DIED IN 1944, AND HIS RECORDS WENT TO THE WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY.
AND IN THOSE RECORDS WERE SOME VERY INTERESTING INFORMATION AND IT SETTLED A LOT OF OLD ARGUMENTS.
THE NINE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF WHO KILLED CHIEF UMTUCH, WE CAN TELL YOU ONE VERSION NOW.
WE CAN TELL YOU WHERE OR VERY CLOSE TO WHERE IT HAPPENED.
WE CAN TELL YOU SOMETHING ABOUT THE INDIANS, WHO THEY WERE AND WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM.
I BROUGHT THIS BECAUSE THIS IS FROM WAS IN THE PAPER ABOUT A WEEK AGO.
IT DOESN'T HAVE MUCH TO DO WITH OUR STORY, BECAUSE OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT IT SAYS IT WAS ABOUT THE YAKIMA NATION AND IT STARTS OUT WITH WHITE SWAN AND IT TALKS ABOUT THE WHITE SWAN PAVILION WHERE THIS OCCASION TOOK PLACE.
SO WHERE DID WHITE SWAN COME FROM? WHAT WAS THAT NAME? WHITE SWAN WAS THE NAME OF THE FIRST ELECTED CHIEF OF THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES AND BANDS OF THE YAKIMA NATION.
HE WAS QUITE POPULAR, WELL RECEIVED.
THE FISHING ON THE COLUMBIA RIVER THAT YOU SEE THE INDIANS DO.
1906 DECISION OF THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES.
WHITE SWAN AS A YOUNG MAN, GOT HIS NAME ON A SPIRIT QUEST TO VANCOUVER LAKE.
HE WAS WITH THE UMTUCH BAND WHEN THEY CAME TO THE FORT AND LEFT TO BE TO MEET UP WITH THE VOLUNTEERS A FEW MILES FROM HERE.
AND HE WAS ONE OF THOSE INDIANS.
[00:10:04]
THERE WAS ANOTHER ONE, CHIEF SPENCER, WHO WAS THE FIRST CHIEF OF THE YAKIMA NATION.HE WAS CHIEF UMTUCH'S NEPHEW AND HIS LIEUTENANT AND BECAME THE SUBSEQUENT CHIEF OF THAT GROUP.
AND THEN THERE WAS CHIEF WATERS, WHO WAS THE THIRD CHIEF.
AND CHIEF WATERS TOLD US MUCH IN HIS STORIES, AND HE GAVE US A GREAT DEAL OF INFORMATION.
SO WE FOUND IT ENJOYABLE TO READ.
WE FOUND IT ANSWERED A LOT OF OLD STORIES.
AND IT TOLD US SOMETHING TOO, THAT ALTHOUGH OUR COMMUNITY IS NAMED BATTLE AND YOUR YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT IS NAMED BATTLE.
IT WAS REALLY A MOMENT OF PEACE.
A TIME OF PEACE IN IN IN A WAR.
AND THE PEOPLE THERE WERE KIND OF EXTRAORDINARY, THE INDIAN SIDE AND THE WHITE SIDE WITH JUDGE STRONG, THE JUSTICE ON TWO SUPREME COURTS OF OREGON AND WASHINGTON.
WHO WITH HAD HE AND HIS PARTNER MIEKE, HAD BROUGHT THE FIRST WAGONS ACROSS THE BLUES AND OPENED UP THE END OF THE OREGON TRAIL.
AND WHAT WOULD YOU HOW WOULD YOU GUESS THAT THESE PEOPLE MIGHT BE THERE AT THAT TIME? ANYWAY, I THOUGHT IT AND WE THOUGHT IT IMPORTANT THAT THE COMMUNITY GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR THE LARGER STORY. AND WE'VE GOT SOME BOOKS FOR YOU AND WE'VE GOT SOME BOOKS AND WE HAVE AN INVITATION TO COME TO THE LIBRARY.
NUMBER TWO, AS FAR AS THE BATTLE GROUND STORY GOES, AND IT WILL BE ON EXHIBIT THROUGH NOVEMBER, AND IT'S OPEN WHENEVER THE LIBRARY IS OPEN.
YES, ALWAYS WE KNOW WHO KILLED CHIEF UMTUCH AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO TELL YOU.
I LIKE IT. AND I'M SO THANKFUL DON DIDN'T SPILLED THE BEANS BECAUSE HE USUALLY DOES.
BUT TRULY, WHEN YOU READ THE BOOK AND SEE THE EXHIBIT, THINK OF EVERYTHING THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN LOST IF THEY HAD STARTED SHOOTING AT EACH OTHER BECAUSE THE PEOPLE ON THE SIDE OF THE VOLUNTEERS FROM THE FORT BECAME VERY PROMINENT AND THEY ESTABLISHED LAW.
WERE ON THE FIRST SUPREME COURT.
THEY ESTABLISHED SO MANY THINGS.
BUT THE PEOPLE ON THE NATIVE AMERICAN SIDE ALSO DID THAT.
CHIEF WHITE SWAN WENT TO THE SUPREME COURT HAS DONE SAID ESTABLISHED THE RESERVE RIGHTS DOCTRINE, WHICH TO THIS DAY FOR ALL TRIBES, ALL INDIANS ACROSS THE COUNTRY HAVE FISHING RIGHTS RETAINED BECAUSE HE WENT TO COURT, HIS HIS WIFE OR HIS BROTHER'S WIFE BECAME THE FIRST FEMALE CHIEF BECAUSE SHE ACCOMPANIED THEM TO WASHINGTON, D.C., AND MADE SUCH AN IMPRESSION. TESTIFYING BEFORE CONGRESS THAT ZACHARY TAYLOR, THE PRESIDENT, MADE HER AN INDIAN CHIEF AND SHE WAS THE FIRST FEMALE ONE.
I'M SURE IT SURPRISED THEM, BUT NEVERTHELESS, SHE WAS ELIZA WATERS, AND ALL OF THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN LOST IF THEY'D STARTED SHOOTING AT EACH OTHER.
AND I HAD A THOUGHT THIS AFTERNOON.
I WAS TELLING HIM IN THE CAR THEY BUILT MONUMENTS, IN PARKS TO MASSACRES, CUSTER'S LAST STAND, THE WHITMAN MISSION, OTHERS, EVEN LE GRAND, OREGON, WHERE I STARTED GOING TO COLLEGE AT THE BASE OF MOUNT EMILY, THERE'S A PLAQUE IN THE GROUND WHERE TWO OF THE MEN WHO WERE AT BATTLE GROUND ON THE SOLDIERS SIDE DIED IN AN INDIAN SKIRMISH.
AND THERE WAS A THERE WAS KILLING THERE, SO THEY BUILT A MONUMENT.
WHY CAN'T WE HAVE A MONUMENT TO THE PEACE THAT HAPPENED HERE?
[00:15:01]
BECAUSE IT WAS UNDER GREAT PRESSURE AND THERE WERE THRIVING COMMUNITIES.CHIEF UMTUCH HAD A RANCH AT THE MOUTH OF THE LEWIS RIVER.
HE RAISED CROPS. HE RAISED CATTLE.
THIS WEREN'T A BAND OF SCRAGGLY INDIANS.
THE SETTLERS WERE PROMINENT PEOPLE.
COLUMBIA LANCASTER WAS A FRIEND OF CHIEF UMTUCH.
ULYSSES GRANT, WHEN HE WAS HERE, WAS A FRIEND OF STRONG'S WHO LIVED DOWN THE [INAUDIBLE] SO THINK OF WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN LOST.
TO ME, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT OUR CHILDREN IN THE SCHOOLS, THOSE CHILDREN WHO ARE IN THE YEARS THAT THEY STUDY THE HISTORY OF THIS AREA, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT THEY SEE AND HEAR THE STORY.
AND THAT'S WHY WE WANT THE BOOKS TO BE IN THE LIBRARY AND THE MATERIALS TO BE AVAILABLE.
SO AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE NOT CHARGING ANYTHING FOR IT OR ANYTHING.
THIS STORY NEEDS TO BE TOLD BECAUSE WE'VE GOT A LOT TO BE PROUD ABOUT.
AND WHEN SOMEBODY COMPLAINS, WHY ARE WE NAMED AFTER A BATTLE? NO, WE'RE NOT.
SO WHEN YOU GET YOUR PACKETS AND THEY'RE ALL LABELED AS TO WHO GETS WHAT.
I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE ANYBODY OUT.
AND WE ALSO INCLUDED THE TWO STUDENTS ON THE ON THE BOARD AS WELL.
WELL, I JUST WANT TO SAY, ON BEHALF OF BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS, WE ARE EXTREMELY HONORED, VERY PROUD AND TRULY GRATEFUL FOR THIS KIND DONATION.
THE FASCINATING WORK THAT YOU DID AND I PROMISE YOU THESE WILL BE DISPLAYED PROUDLY IN ALL OF OUR SCHOOL LIBRARIES FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS TO SEE AND READ.
SO THANK YOU, ALL OF YOU, VERY, VERY, VERY MUCH FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.
TOTALLY, VERY, VERY APPRECIATIVE.
THANK YOU. NOW YOU CAN HAVE THE REST OF THE STORY.
YEAH. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY'RE BACK YET FROM CATALOGING, BUT THERE WILL BE FOUR COPIES IN THE LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION AT THE BATTLE GROUND LIBRARY, TOO.
THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] OH, IT'S HARD TO GET THAT.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WORKING BETTER TOGETHER.
THAT'S NICE. I GOT TO TELLING THE STORY OF HOW PEACE WINS.
AS SOON AS I FINISH MY COPY, I'LL PASS IT ON.
I'LL SEND THEM AROUND TO EVERYBODY.
YEA. I DON'T SEE ANYBODY IN THE AUDIENCE.
[6. Communications]
SIR, DO YOU KNOW OF ANYBODY COMING UP? WE HAVE. ARE YOU WILLING TO FILL IN IF NEED BE? I DO HAVE A FEW THINGS TO SAY, ACTUALLY.WE DIDN'T BUY ENOUGH WATER AND STUFF, THOUGH, SO PEOPLE WERE A LITTLE BIT THIRSTY.
AND ON THAT NOTE, WE ARE TENTATIVELY PLANNING A DANCE FOR WINTER THAT'S CALLED THE CHANCE TO DANCE.
AND IT'S KIND OF A CHANCE TO DANCE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION KIDS IN OUR SCHOOL.
AND WE'RE KIND OF TRYING TO MAKE IT A LESS LIKE OVERSTIMULATING ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEY CAN KIND OF HAVE THAT DANCE OPPORTUNITY WITHOUT HAVING, YOU KNOW, THE REALLY, REALLY LOUD MUSIC, THE REALLY, REALLY BRIGHT LIGHTS, LIKE THE STROBE LIGHTS.
AND LET'S SEE, WE'RE PLANNING FOR IT TO BE ON DECEMBER 16TH WITH THE WINTER WONDERLAND THEME.
AND IT'S GOING TO BE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY TO ELIMINATE ANY PROBLEMS WITH TRANSPORTATION.
IT'S GOING TO BE TOTALLY FREE OF CHARGE.
AND OUR ISP IS CURRENTLY PLANNING THAT RIGHT NOW.
SO THAT'S SOMETHING EXCITING THAT'S HAPPENING.
AND YEAH, I THINK THAT'S ABOUT IT.
BUT JUST A FEW EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.
NEXT UP IN OUR BOARD COMMUNICATIONS IS OUR COMMITTEE REPORT, LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE.
[00:20:04]
WE SUBMITTED THE POSITIONS AND SO THOSE ARE ALL TAKEN CARE OF.I'VE TALKED WITH LOGAN ANDRUS, AND THAT WSSDA.
BUT SO OUR PART'S DONE AND I FEEL GOOD THAT WE GOT THAT DONE.
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT WITH THAT.
YEAH, THEY USUALLY REVEAL THEIR TOP 3 TO 5 AT THE CONFERENCE.
DIRECTOR SNITILY. WE MET ON THE AUDIT COMMITTEE, MET ON OCTOBER 4TH, AND WE REVIEWED PAYROLL VOUCHERS, SUPERINTENDENT'S TIMESHEET AND SUPERINTENDENTS BUDGET AND THE BOARD BUDGET, AND EVERYTHING WAS IN ORDER.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. BATTLE GROUND EDUCATION FOUNDATION DIRECTOR MADDUX IS NOT HERE.
I KNOW WE JUST FINISHED UP THE ACTION ON THAT.
THEY DID REALLY WELL, SO I'M SURE THEY'RE ON TO THE NEXT ITEM.
ANOTHER COMMUNITY PARTNER THAT WE REALLY APPRECIATE, AND THEY WERE HERE AT THE LAST MEETING.
BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE DID COME OVER IS THE THE POSTSEASON BRACKETS ARE NOW UP.
AND THEN WITH THAT HERE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF THREE WEEKS, WE'LL HAVE THE SEEDING COMMITTEES FILLED AND START LOOKING AND PLACING TEAMS WHERE THEY GO FOR THOSE POSTSEASON TOURNAMENTS. AND THERE'S SOME NEW RATES, THE TOURNAMENTS $10 AND $7 FOR FOOTBALL, SOCCER, WHICH IS AN INCREASE IN TICKET PRICES OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.
THIS DISTRICT FOUR WEBSITE WAS LIVE TONS OF BUGS.
SO THEY'RE WORKING ON THAT AGAIN.
SO THAT SHOULD BE FIXED UP HERE SHORTLY.
AND LASTLY, WE HAD NICK HOFFMAN IN ATTENDANCE.
HE'S THE PRESIDENT OF WIAA AND HE COVERED A FEW DIFFERENT THINGS AND A BIG ONE.
WITH SOME PERSONNEL AND MAKE SURE THESE COACHES GOT EVERYTHING THEY NEED.
THEY STRUGGLE WITH THAT THIS YEAR.
NEXT MEETING IS NOVEMBER 17TH.
THANK YOU. NEXT UP IS OUR WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION UPDATES.
OF COURSE, AT THE END OF THE MEETING, WE'LL TALK ABOUT OUR SESSIONS WE'RE GOING TO ATTEND.
ANYBODY HAVE ANY OTHER CONTACTS? JUST I HOPE EVERYONE VOTED FOR WSSDA OFFICERS AND REPRESENTATIVES.
I HEARD THAT OVERALL ACROSS THE STATE, ONLY 500 DIRECTORS VOTED.
SO. WOW. GOT TO GET MORE PEOPLE RIGHT.
THAT HAPPENS WITH A LOT OF OUR FRIENDS AND OTHER DISTRICTS.
YEAH. YEAH. I DID HAVE MY MEETING WITH THE TRUST LANDS ADVISORY GROUP AGAIN, WHO WERE DOING THE SAME THING, HONING THEIR LEGISLATIVE MESSAGE.
AND AS WE HEARD FROM MR. JOLMA, THE STATE SHARE OF FUNDING FACILITIES HAS CONTINUED TO GET SMALLER AND SMALLER AND SMALLER.
AND SO THIS POSITION IS REALLY AROUND HOW CAN WE TURN THAT SHIP AROUND RATHER THAN MAKING IT A SHRINKING QUANTITY, BUT AN INCREASING ONE? THAT'S NOT GOING TO NECESSARILY BE EASY, BUT IT'S GOING TO HAVE TO HAPPEN AT THE LEGISLATIVE LEVEL.
SO I'LL GIVE YOU MORE DETAILS WHEN THEY MAKE THEIR FINAL STATEMENT.
AND LAST FOR DIRECTOR REPORTS IS OUR TOUR COMMITTEE.
AND EVERYBODY WENT TO BATTLEGROUND EXCEPT ME.
SO I'M EXCITED TO HEAR WHAT YOU FOUND.
THE BREAKFAST WAS OUTSTANDING.
IT WAS GOOD. IT WAS HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH.
AND SO HAVE YOU HAD THAT? CARNEY NO, IT WAS.
IT WAS DELICIOUS. YEAH, IT WAS FANTASTIC.
THE HOT CHOCOLATE. OH, MY GOSH.
WE GOT TO POACH OUR OWN OUR OWN EGGS.
[00:25:02]
WELL, I FAILED THE FIRST ATTEMPT, SO.AND THEN THEY SPLIT US UP INTO THREE GROUPS, AND ALL THREE GROUPS GOT TO GO INTO SEVERAL DIFFERENT CLASSROOMS. AND OVERALL, I MEAN, I CAN COMMENT FROM MY SIDE, JUST A LOT OF GOOD STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND TEACHERS WITH DYNAMIC LESSON PLANS AND KIDS THAT WERE ENGAGED AND EVERYTHING LOOKED REALLY GOOD FOR MY WE WHEN WE OUR GROUP, WE PRETTY MUCH COVER CLASSES BETWEEN SECOND AND THIRD PERIOD.
AND IT WAS FUN FOR ME BECAUSE THE SECOND PERIOD CLASSES, MY KIDS WERE IN SOME OF THOSE.
AND THEN BY THE TIME WE GOT TO THIRDS, THEY WERE IN THERE.
THERE TOO. SO I FELT LIKE I WAS FOLLOWING MY KID AROUND SCHOOL ALL DAY, BUT IT WAS COOL.
AND THEN I GOT STUCK AND MR. IN HIS CLASS, JUST LISTENING TO HIM TALK ABOUT THE PRESIDENTS AND THE GUY JUST SUCKS YOU IN AND YOU JUST CAN'T STOP.
YEAH, ME TOO. IT'S HARD TO GET OUT OF THERE.
YEAH, WE GOT TO GO TO THE AUTO SHOP, WHICH IS REALLY ENLIGHTENING.
I DIDN'T REALIZE THEY'RE THERE.
FROM THE BASIC FRAME OF A TRUCK, AND THEY'RE GOING TO BUILD A DRAGSTER AND THEY'RE GOING TO RACE IT.
THAT'S THEIR GOAL, IS TO RACE IT THIS YEAR.
SO THAT WAS KIND OF NEAT TO SEE THAT.
I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THE ROBUST, ROBUST ASL PROGRAM THEY HAVE AT BATTLE GROUND.
WE VISITED A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT CLASSES.
THE KIDS WERE REALLY ENGAGED IN BIG CLASSES.
I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED WITH WITH THAT.
SO NOW VERY WELL TO EVERYTHING ABOVE.
AND I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE LED BY THE SOME STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES.
AND AGAIN, THAT STUDENT VOICE, I THINK EVEN ON OUR TOURS, IS REALLY IMPORTANT.
IT'S FUN TO LISTEN TO WHAT THEIR CHALLENGES ARE.
AND SO WE HAD A LOT OF DISCUSSION.
I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT ONE CLASS THAT THE FORENSIC SCIENCE CLASS WHERE ALL THE STUDENTS HAD BUILT DIORAMAS OF A CRIME SCENE, SO THEY HAD TO DETERMINE WHAT THE CRIME WAS.
IT WAS. AND THEN THEY HAD TO MAKE THE SCENE WITH EVIDENCE.
AND I WANT TO KNOW HOW THAT CAME OUT, BECAUSE I THINK WHAT HAPPENS THEN IS THE STUDENTS HAVE TO LOOK AT ALL THESE CRIME SCENES AND DETERMINE WHO COMMITTED THE CRIME AND SO ON.
IT WAS VERY INVOLVED AND THEY HAD A LOT OF FUN WITH IT.
SOME OF THEM WERE, I MEAN, JUST OVER THE TOP AND MAKING THESE LITTLE TINY, LIKE EVEN PAINT CANS OUT OF A PIECE OF PAPER AND MAKING THEM LOOK, I HAD I HAD THE HONOR OF GOING INTO THAT CLASSROOM PRIOR TO OUR TOUR.
IT WAS ONE OF MY WHEN I SENT OUT MY ASK TO BE INVITED, THAT WAS THE CLASS THAT INVITED ME.
AND I WENT IN AND AND AND TO YOUR POINT, EVEN THE THE, THE PEOPLE AND THE THEN WERE TO SCALE.
YES. I MEAN, THEY HAD THEY HAD TO DO SOME MATH TO TO COORDINATE TO MAKE SURE THAT IF THE ROOM WAS THIS SIZE AND BUT IT WAS REALLY THIS SIZE AND THE PEOPLE WERE, YOU KNOW, FIVE FOOT SIX.
BUT IN THIS SCALE, WHAT WOULD THEY LOOK LIKE? AND SO TO MARY'S POINT, VERY, VERY, VERY PRECISE AND VERY INTERESTING.
IT KIND OF SHOCKED ME WALKING IN.
I WAS LIKE, WOW, WE HAVE THIS HERE.
BUT I ALWAYS THOUGHT FROM THE OUTSIDE, BUT YOU COULD JUST KIND OF SEE THE TRUCKS PARKED THERE.
I WAS A LITTLE I WAS A LITTLE NERVOUS ABOUT IT.
BUT YEAH, IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING GOING INTO THE ASL CLASSROOMS TOO.
EVERYONE WAS GETTING VERY HYPED UP ABOUT IT.
IT WAS IT WAS KIND OF LOUD FOR BEING AN ASL CLASSROOM, BUT YEAH, IT WAS VERY FUN.
IT WAS ONE OF THE NICE THINGS ABOUT THE TOUR.
I WANT TO COMPLIMENT THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM FOR PUTTING IT TOGETHER, BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I APPRECIATED ABOUT THE TOUR WERE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT THEY DID HAVE INVOLVED. I MEAN, I THINK EACH GROUP, EACH OF OUR GROUPS HAD FIVE OR SO STUDENTS PARTICIPATING WITH US AND WE GOT TO ASK QUESTIONS AS WE WERE WALKING AND GOT TO GET FEEDBACK FROM THEM.
I'VE NEVER BEEN INTO THIS PART OF THE SCHOOL OR THIS, THIS CLASSROOM.
I DIDN'T KNOW THAT WE TAUGHT THIS.
SO THAT WAS VERY IT WAS VERY, VERY, VERY INTERESTING AND APPRECIATED.
LIKE ROB, I REALLY APPRECIATED THE ASL CLASS.
I JUST WANTED TO TAKE IT WAS THE ENGAGEMENT WAS THROUGH THE ROOF.
[00:30:07]
TO PASS ALL OF THEIR CLASSES AND GET THROUGH THEIR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.THOSE RELATIONSHIPS ARE OBVIOUSLY PAYING OFF TENFOLD.
SO APPRECIATIVE CERTAINLY OF THEIR WORK AS WELL.
HOW IS THAT REMODEL HOLDING UP, DO YOU THINK? SINCE WE WERE TALKING ABOUT DOING THAT, MAYBE TO OTHER SCHOOLS.
YOU KNOW, I THINK THE THE REMODEL WAS GOOD AND BAD.
I MEAN, IT CERTAINLY HAS CREATED A CAMPUS THAT HAS A LOT OF DIFFERENT QUIRKS ABOUT IT AND SOME SAFETY CONCERNS AROUND IT.
BUT AT THE TIME IT MET THE NEED RATHER THAN TEARING DOWN THE ENTIRETY OF THE BUILDING.
BASICALLY, IT BATTLE GROUND WAS A SEPARATE BUILDING.
THEY JUST PUT A BIG ROOF OVER THE TOP OF IT AND THEN BUILT THE GYMNASIUM, THE FIELDHOUSE, BECAUSE THE GYM USED TO BE WHERE THE CAFETERIA IS MORE INTERNAL HALLWAYS.
RIGHT. A LOT OF A LOT MORE INTERNAL HALLWAYS.
AGAIN, THROWING A ROOF ON TOP.
BUT, YOU KNOW, I THINK THERE'S GOOD AND THERE'S BAD ASSOCIATED WITH IT.
WHEN WAS THAT DONE? 1994. YEAH.
AND I KNOW THAT BECAUSE THE STATE MATCHING STATE FUNDS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE AFTER 30 YEARS.
SO THOSE STATE FUNDS, BATTLE GROUND WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR STATE FUNDS IN 2024.
YEAH. AS WE WERE TOURING, ROB AND I TALKED ABOUT IT A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE WE'RE BOTH BATTLE GROUND GRADUATES AND IT INTERESTING BECAUSE ONE OF THE CORNERS THAT WE WERE AT IS WHERE THE OFFICE USED TO SIT, BUT NOW THOSE ARE SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSES AND WHERE THE LIBRARY IS THE MAIN HALLWAY THAT WAS ALL OPEN.
PRIOR TO THAT, THE THE RAMPS THAT GO DOWN TO SOME OF OUR CTE CLASSES AND WHERE WE HAD FOODS THAT USED TO BE THE CAFETERIA OFF TO THE SIDE, OFF TO THE NORTH SIDE OF THAT HALLWAY WAS THE CAFETERIA.
SO IT'S FROM A PERSPECTIVE OF HAVING LIVED IN IT, IT LOOKS TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
BUT SOME OF THE CLASSROOMS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME.
THE BUSINESS CLASSES THEY HAD ACCOUNTING IN THERE, AND THEY DO NOT LOOK DIFFERENT WHATSOEVER.
SO IT IS INTERESTING TO TO STEP INTO THOSE SPACES.
AND OVERALL, IT FEELS VERY DIFFERENT.
BUT IN MANY WAYS THERE ARE THINGS THAT ARE EXACTLY THE SAME 30 PLUS YEARS LATER.
SO I DO HAVE TO NOTE THAT LIKE THAT, THE UNIQUE LAYOUT OF OUR SCHOOL KIND OF CREATES SOME COMPLICATIONS, TOO, BECAUSE I THINK I MENTIONED BEFORE THE ENTRYWAYS IN EVERY SINGLE HALLWAY. WE ARE ALL SO USED TO USING THOSE EVERY SINGLE MORNING TO GET TO OUR CLASSES ON TIME AND FOR SECURITY REASONS THAT ARE VERY UNDERSTANDABLE AND VERY NECESSARY, LIKE WE'VE CLOSED OFF SOME OF THEM AND SO THEY'RE NOT ACCESSIBLE IN THE MORNINGS.
BUT THERE'S CERTAIN ONE NEXT TO MY AP US HISTORY CLASSROOM.
I ENTERED IT EVERY SINGLE MORNING, BUT NOW IT'S A BLOCKED OFF FOR SECURITY REASONS AND IT'S LIKE WE HAVE TO TAKE THE LONG ROUTE ALL THE WAY AROUND THE SCHOOL NOW AND EVERYONE'S COMPLAINING, WHICH, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE ONLY COMPLAINING BECAUSE IT TAKES TWO EXTRA MINUTES TO GET THERE.
BUT WHEN YOU'RE BETWEEN CLASSES, YOU'RE GOING TO OPEN THE DOOR FOR SOMEONE OUTSIDE.
IT'S NOT LIKE A, YOU KNOW, A ONE DOOR SCHOOL WHERE IT'S MONITORED BECAUSE IT CAN'T BE AT ALL TIMES.
SO THAT'S JUST SOMETHING THAT'S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.
ALL RIGHT. WELL, THANK YOU FOR THAT FEEDBACK.
ANYBODY HAVE ANY? I LIVE AND BREATHE FOOTBALL RIGHT NOW, SO I'M NOT DOING ANYTHING BEYOND THAT.
I'D JUST LIKE TO SAY THANKS TO ALL THE PARENTS THAT ARE GOING TO COME IN FOR PARENT CONFERENCES.
IT'S OKAY FOR ME AND THE TEACHERS, YOU KNOW, THOSE ARE SUCH UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP BUILD THOSE PARTNERSHIPS IN THERE AND MAKE SURE, YOU KNOW, THE PARENTS AND TEACHERS DON'T GET ENOUGH TIME TO TALK AND TO HAVE A FORMAL PROCESS
[00:35:03]
BY WHICH THEY CAN DO THAT AND TALK ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF EACH STUDENT.THANK YOU TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS WHO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT THIS WEEK.
[7. Superintendent and Staff Updates]
MR. WATERS, SUPERINTENDENT AND STAFF UPDATES.YEAH. THANK YOU. JUST REAL QUICK FOR ME.
FIRST OFF, I WANTED TO THANK ALL OF OUR STAFF FOR LAST WEEK.
WE HAD, AS YOU KNOW, WE HAD THE WILDFIRES GOING AND WE HAD EVACUATION ZONES AND WE HAD SMOKE AND ALL OF THOSE KINDS OF THINGS THAT MADE LIFE A LITTLE BIT MORE CHALLENGING, A LITTLE BIT MORE DIFFICULT FOR STAFF.
ALL OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES WERE CANCELED.
WE HAD TO DO INDOOR RECESS, WHICH IS A CERTAINLY DIFFICULT FOR MAKES IT MORE CHALLENGING AND DIFFICULT FOR OUR STAFF WHO HAS TO OFFER THOSE LEVELS OF SUPERVISION.
WE HAD TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AFFECTED BY THE SMOKE, SOME SCHOOLS MORE THAN OTHERS.
I SPECIFICALLY WANT TO THANK THE STAFF AT AMBOY AND YAKULT.
I WANT TO THANK OUR STAFFS AT SOME OF OUR OLDER SCHOOLS THAT HAVE OUTDOOR DOOR ENTRY POINTS LIKE LAUREN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND PLEASANT VALLEY, BOTH PRIMARY AND MIDDLE GLENWOOD PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL.
IT WAS WE WERE ABLE KEVIN AND HIS CREW DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB.
BUT THERE'S ONLY SO MUCH YOU CAN DO AND SOME OF OUR OLDER DESIGN SCHOOLS.
SO AGAIN, I JUST WANT TO THANK STAFF FOR STICKING WITH IT AND FOR TRUSTING US AND FOR ALLOWING LEARNING TO GO ON UNDER CHALLENGING CIRCUMSTANCES.
WE HAD AN OUTSTANDING MEETING.
WE HAVE TEN NEW MEMBERS THAT ARE PART OF THE CAC TEAM, SO THAT WAS EXCITING TO MEET THEM AND EVERYBODY WAS WE HAD A GREAT TURNOUT AND WE HAD ALISON TUCHARDT, DAVE CRESAP AND AMY FREDERICKS FROM OUR CURRICULUM DEPARTMENT COME AND TALK TO US ABOUT AND EDUCATE THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS ABOUT THE CURRICULUM ADOPTION PROCESS AND ALL THAT'S IN THERE.
AND WE GOT SOME OUTSTANDING MAYOR AND I WERE TALKING ABOUT IT.
WE GOT SOME OUTSTANDING FEEDBACK FROM OUR PARENTS ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WHAT THEIR QUESTIONS ARE IN THE PROCESS AND HOW WE MIGHT DO A BETTER JOB OF INVOLVING PARENTS AND THEN EVEN BEYOND ONCE THE CURRICULUM IS ADOPTED, WHAT WE CAN DO TO SUPPORT OUR PARENTS, TO HELP US IN A PARTNERSHIP OF OF USING THE CURRICULUM TO HELP EDUCATE THEIR OWN THEIR OWN KIDS.
SO THAT WAS IT WAS A IT WAS A IT WAS A GREAT MEETING.
AND WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT WHAT THE YEAR HOLDS.
COULD YOU SCHEDULE THE NEXT ONE YET? YEAH, OUR NEXT ONE IS NOVEMBER.
THIS NOVEMBER 10TH? YES. THANK YOU, SHELLY.
OKAY. NEXT UP IS OUR TEACHING AND LEARNING REPORT.
JUST A FEW THINGS FOR YOU THIS EVENING.
BOARD WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW SOME OF THE WORK THAT'S GOING ON IN.
WELL, FIRST OFF, WITH CONFERENCES, WE'VE BEEN DOING SOME WORK AROUND STUDENT LEARNING PLANS.
THE TEACHING AND LEARNING TEAM HAS HELPED SUPPORT THE DATA, GETTING THE DATA READY AND PROVIDING SOME OF THAT INFORMATION TO GO OUT TO PARENTS SPECIFICALLY AROUND STATE TESTING AND THE RESULTS FROM LAST SPRING AND SHARING THAT WITH PARENTS.
THE REPORTS FROM THE STATE HAVE COMPLETELY CHANGED.
SO THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME LEARNING A LEARNING CURVE THERE.
BUT I DO THINK THEY'RE A LITTLE MORE DIGESTIBLE THAN THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST.
CERTAINLY CONTINUING TO WORK ON A VARIETY OF ASPECTS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING.
SO THEY'RE WORKING DILIGENTLY ON THAT, WE APPRECIATE THAT WORK.
WE'VE SEEN A HUGE UPTICK IN EL POPULATIONS IN OUR SCHOOLS AND SO OUR TEAM'S BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD ON RESOURCES TO HELP SUPPORT CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION, AS WELL AS HIRING ADDITIONAL STAFF TO SUPPORT THOSE ENDEAVORS.
[00:40:01]
AND SO A LOT GOING ON WITH THAT.YOU'RE USING THAT TERM, EL, JUST SO THAT EVERYBODY WHO MAY BE LISTENING IN.
SO YEAH, AND WE ALSO HAVE NEXT WEEK WE END OUR FIRST CYCLE OF THE PLC PROCESS.
AND SO WE HAVE A WAIVER DAY NEXT WEDNESDAY.
SO STUDENTS WILL NOT BE IN ATTENDANCE, BUT OUR STAFF WILL BE WORKING VERY DILIGENTLY ON SELECTING A NEW ESSENTIAL STANDARD AND DOING WORK AROUND THE PLC PROCESS. WE WILL ALSO BE ASKING FOR FEEDBACK ON THE SUCCESSES FROM THE FIRST CYCLE OF THE YEAR SO THAT WE CAN SHARE THAT WITH YOU AT OUR BOARD WORK SESSION ON NOVEMBER 28TH.
ALSO, JUST WANTED TO DO A SHOUT OUT.
I GAVE YOU SOME HANDOUTS FROM LAST WEEK.
WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE AND I JUST GAVE YOU SOME HANDOUTS FROM THAT EVENT.
WE DID HAVE OUR TWO OF OUR PREVENTION INTERVENTION STAFF, KERRI KOEHLER, WHO WORKS AT BOTH PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL AND AT CHIEF, AS WELL AS SHELLY HINKLE, WHO WORKS AT BOTH PLEASANT VALLEY CAMPUS AND LAUREN CAMP, LAUREN AS WELL, AND OUR DREAM TEAM.
SO OUR DREAM TEAM FROM CHIEF MIDDLE SCHOOL THERE, ADVISOR BLAKE BOWER WERE THERE AND THEY SPONSORED THIS EVENT AS WELL AS WE HAD SOME COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS.
JENNIFER KIRBY FROM PREVENT COALITION WAS THERE.
SO LOTS OF GOOD RESOURCES THAT WERE HANDED OUT AT THAT EVENT.
I WOULD DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO THE FRONT SHEET THAT I GAVE YOU.
THERE IS THIS PROBABLY A REALLY ENGAGING VIDEO THAT YOU CAN WATCH CALLED DEAD ON ARRIVAL, AND IT REALLY SHARES WHAT'S HAPPENING.
IT'S ABOUT 20 MINUTES, 22 MINUTES LONG.
IT'S JUST A GREAT GUIDE FOR EDUCATORS AND FOR PARENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE TRENDS IN FENTANYL USE AND WHY IT IS SO DANGEROUS FOR OUR YOUTH.
IT'S INTERESTING TO HEAR SOME OF THE STATISTICS ABOUT THE RISE IN USE AND THE USAGE HAS GONE WAY UP FOR PEOPLE 23 AND UNDER. BUT INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, IT IT'S ALSO GONE UP FOR 75 TO 85 YEAR OLDS.
SO SOME CRAZY TRENDS THAT I THINK ARE IMPORTANT FOR US TO KNOW AND TO GET OUT THERE.
I ALSO WANTED TO APPLAUD THE BOARD BECAUSE YOU MADE THAT DECISION WHEN KATHY SHANNON WAS HERE EARLIER THIS FALL TO MOVE TOWARDS HAVING NARCAN, THE MEDICATION THAT CAN REVERSE OPIOID USE IN ALL SCHOOLS, NOT JUST HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH IS REQUIRED BY LAW, BUT IN K THROUGH 12.
AND THAT WAS A QUESTION THAT CAME UP FROM OUR COMMUNITY IS WHERE ARE THEY? WHERE IS THAT BEING PLACED IN SCHOOLS.
IS IT ANYWHERE BESIDES HIGH SCHOOL? IS IT IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS? AND IT WAS NICE TO BE ABLE TO SAY THAT OUR BOARD MADE THE DECISION THAT WE WOULD WANT IT IN ALL SCHOOLS.
I WILL TELL YOU THAT WE DON'T HAVE IT IN OUR PRIMARY SCHOOLS YET.
AND CATHY'S GOT AN ORDER IN AND IS TRYING TO GET MORE.
IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, I'LL GET YOU THE LINK FROM 630 TO 730.
THEY'RE DOING A TRAINING ON WHAT? HOW YOU RESPOND, IF YOU COME ACROSS SOMEONE WHO APPEARS TO HAVE AN OPIOID OVERDOSE.
THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT AN OPIOID OVERDOSE IS IF YOU TREAT SOMEONE, YOU CAN'T HURT THEM.
IT'S NOT LIKE SOMEBODY THAT YOU GIVE AN EPIPEN TO AND YOU COULD CAUSE THEM ISSUES IF THEY AREN'T IF THEY AREN'T HAVING AN ALLERGIC REACTION, NARCAN WON'T CAUSE ISSUES FOR SOMEONE IF YOU YOU GIVE IT TO THEM WITHOUT THEM BEING IN AN OVERDOSE SITUATION.
I WOULD LOVE FOR IT TO BE MORE WIDELY SPREAD FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL OF US.
SO. AND THAT'S ALL I HAVE, UNLESS YOU HAVE A QUESTION.
[00:45:02]
AND WHILE SHE IS WORKING EXTREMELY HARD, SHE HAS NOTHING TO REPORT.SO REINHARDT IS STAYING SILENT TODAY.
AND AFTER THAT IS OUR FINANCE REPORT.
SO JUST A REALLY QUICK UPDATE TO.
WE ARE STILL WORKING ON THE END OF THE YEAR CLOSE FOR THE 21-22 SCHOOL YEAR.
AND THEN ALSO THE CONTRACT INFORMATION REPORT WILL BE ON THE NEXT BOARD MEETING REPORT.
IT WAS NOT ON THIS ONE, SO JUST LET YOU KNOW THAT'LL GET ON THE NEXT ONE.
I WANTED TO DO AN ENROLLMENT UPDATE AND I'M HOPING THAT YOU CAN SEE THIS.
ALL RIGHT. I WILL TRY AND SPOTLIGHT SOME OF THIS, BUT NEVER MIND.
OKAY. SO ACTUALLY, WE'LL JUST GO AHEAD AND I'LL JUST SAY SO.
ONE OF THE THINGS I WANTED TO DO WAS I JUST WANTED TO BRING UP OUR PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS.
I THOUGHT THAT THAT WAS IMPORTANT.
YOU SEE IT ON GRAPHS, RIGHT? BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN REPORTING IT BECAUSE WE HAVE THOSE THAT DATA.
BUT I JUST WANTED TO I WANTED TO GIVE YOU THIS JUST KIND OF LINED UP SO YOU CAN SEE THAT BY SCHOOL.
SO THIS IS A GOOD RESOURCE INFORMATION IF YOU JUST KIND OF WANT TO REFER BACK TO IT AT SOME TIME.
BUT OVERALL, I JUST WANTED TO GO OVER THE NUMBERS.
SO FIRST OF ALL, FROM OUR BUDGET, AS OF OUR OCTOBER COUNT, NOW WE ARE UP 534 FTE, AND THAT'S FULL TIME AND EQUIVALENT OVER OUR BUDGET, WHICH IS ABOUT 4.7%.
AND WE INCREASED FROM SEPTEMBER 125 TOTAL FTE.
THAT'S KIND OF UNUSUAL TO SEE THAT KIND OF JUMP THERE.
SO AND THEN JUST A REMINDER THAT FROM OUR MARCH 2020 PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS OF 12,430, SO WE'RE STILL SHORT 472 FROM PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC.
SO I JUST REALLY WANTED TO KIND OF LET YOU SEE SOME OF THOSE NUMBERS THERE.
AND THEN I WANTED YOU TO NOTE THAT THE HIGH SCHOOL ENROLLMENT IS UP IN THE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOLS.
IT IS DOWN IN OUR AND OUR ALE OR SUMMIT VIEW AND RUNNING START.
SO THAT'S KIND OF THEY'VE SHIFTED OVER INTO THE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOLS.
SO THAT'S REALLY GREAT INFORMATION THERE AND THEN JUST SHOWING OUR PRIMARY MIDDLE SCHOOL IS STILL DOWN FROM PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS THERE SO AND YEAH MICHELLE THE BATTLEGROUND HIGH SCHOOL AND PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL THEY'RE UP FROM THEIR PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS.
PRE-PANDEMIC 119 IN BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL AND PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL 135 FROM PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS.
YEAH SO YEAH SO REAL INTERESTING PUTTING THIS TOGETHER WAS KIND OF IT'S INTERESTING TO SEE WHERE YOU KNOW WHERE WE ARE FROM PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC.
AND THEN HERE WE HAVE JUST A HEAD COUNT.
WE HAD 144 INCREASE FROM THE SEPTEMBER COUNT, AND THAT INCLUDES OUR ALE.
AND THEN ALSO OUR FTE WAS 125, AS WE SAID, AND THAT ALSO INCLUDES THE ALE ACCOUNTS.
AND THEN ALE ACCOUNTED FOR 57 OF THE 125 THAT WE WENT UP IN FTE.
AND THEN THIS IS INTERESTING TOO, OUR CTE HAS GROWN QUITE A BIT.
AND WHAT'S REALLY INTERESTING WHEN YOU COMPARE THE NUMBER OF FTE OF CTE TO THE NUMBER OF FTE FOR THE BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL AND PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL AND JUST THOSE STUDENTS THERE, 31.2% ARE TAKING CTE CLASSES.
SO THE WAY THAT THE FUNDING WORKS IS THAT WE BRING IN THAT FUNDING, BUT 31.2% OF THAT, IT'S GOING RIGHT OVER TO OUR CTE FOR THAT PROGRAM.
THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, CTE IS JUST IT'S IT'S FLAT AT 65.21.
AND THEN OUR SPECIAL ENROLLMENT AND THIS IS PRETTY USUAL TO HAVE A CLIMB AS THEY'RE IDENTIFYING NEW STUDENTS AND NEW STUDENTS ARE BEING SERVED BY THAT PROGRAM. AND THEN HERE IS THE THE REAL INTERESTING IS THE TRANSITIONAL BILINGUAL PROGRAM.
AND LYNELLE MURRAY IS HERE WITH US TODAY.
SO THAT'S HER PROGRAM OVER THERE.
[00:50:06]
UKRAINE. AND LYNELLE DID GIVE ME A COUPLE PIECES OF INFORMATION.WE WENT FROM 62 LANGUAGES TO 71 LANGUAGES HERE.
AND THE GREAT THING ABOUT HAVING FUND BALANCE AND THIS IS A REALLY IMPORTANT REASON TO HAVE FUND BALANCE IS BECAUSE WE ARE ONLY PAID ON BUDGET THROUGH THE THROUGH JANUARY.
SO THAT MONEY IS JUST ON BUDGET SO THAT THOSE EXTRA STUDENTS THAT WE HAVE AND ALL THE TEACHERS WE'VE HIRED AND SUPPORT STAFF WE'VE HIRED AND INCLUDING BILINGUAL, WE HAVE ONE NEW TEACHER, WE HAVE THREE SUPPORT SERVICES, INSTRUCTIONAL AIDES THAT HAVE BEEN HIRED.
WE CAN GO AHEAD AND ISSUE CONTRACTS.
WE CAN GO AHEAD AND AND PROVIDE THOSE SERVICES.
SO THAT'S A THAT'S A REALLY GOOD THING FOR THE FUND BALANCE TO HAVE AVAILABLE.
DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON THIS PROGRAM AT ALL? NO. OKAY.
I DO I DO HAVE A QUESTION, AND IT'S KIND OF ON THE OVERALL.
SO WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THE KIND OF REBOUND OF THE NUMBERS.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO KNOW ARE THOSE STUDENTS WHO WERE IN THE SYSTEM BEFORE LEFT AND ARE COMING BACK OR ACTUALLY NEW TO THE DISTRICT? IS THAT A HARD DATA POINT TO FIGURE OUT.
I DON'T THINK IT'S HARD TO FIGURE OUT.
YEAH, I THINK IT'S JUST A MATTER OF BEING ABLE TO PULL THE PULL THE REPORTS.
SO WE CAN, WE CAN DO SOME SORTING AND I'M SURE THAT WE COULD GET THAT INFORMATION.
THAT'S IT IS SOMETHING WE SHOULD LOOK INTO.
YEAH. IS IT, SHOULD WE BE PREPARING FOR GROWTH.
OR ARE WE JUST RECOVERING WHO WAS HERE BEFORE.
YEAH, GOOD. I'LL LOOK INTO THAT.
YEAH, SHELLY, WE'LL LOOK INTO THAT.
I WROTE IT DOWN AND THEN JUST YOU CAN SEE THE RUNNING START IS WAY DOWN.
SO OCTOBER IS OUR FIRST COUNT FOR RUNNING START.
AND THEN THE REST OF THE SLIDES ARE JUST THE NUMBERS THAT GO WITH THE WITH THE PREVIOUS SLIDES.
SO IT'S JUST SOME INFORMATION ON HEAD COUNT FOR SEPTEMBER FTE FOR SEPTEMBER AND THEN HEAD COUNT FOR OCTOBER AND THEN FTE FOR OCTOBER.
THAT'S ALL I HAD. THANK YOU, MICHELLE.
MICHELLE, WILL YOU YOU'LL MAKE SURE THAT SANDY GETS THESE SO THAT SHE CAN ADD THEM TO BOARD DOCS.
YEAH, BECAUSE I THINK THEY'RE ALREADY THERE.
YEAH, THEY'RE IN THE BOARD DOCS OR THEY'LL BE PUBLISHED ON BOARD DOCS.
THANK YOU. NEXT UP IS KEVIN JOLMA BUT HE JUST GAVE HIS SO KEVIN'S NO LONGER HERE.
AND THEN LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, OUR COMMUNICATIONS REPORT, AMANDA RICHTER.
I WANTED TO SHARE A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR INTERIM REPORT.
HOPEFULLY YOU CAN GET THAT. IT IS WITH OUR PRINTER.
SO THAT WILL GO TO ALL HOUSEHOLDS AND BUSINESSES WITHIN THE DISTRICT.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COLLABORATION.
AND A BIG SHOUT OUT TO JENNA BUSHER HILL, WHO DID ALL OF THE LAYOUT AND DESIGN WORK FOR THIS ISSUE AND JUST DID A REALLY FABULOUS JOB OF TRANSLATING ALL THE DATA INTO A READER FRIENDLY FORMAT.
THANKS. IS THAT IT FOR YOU? GREAT. HEY, THAT WAS FAST FOR US.
YEAH. YEAH, WE'RE BEING EFFICIENT.
WE ARE BEING EFFICIENT. AND AS SOON AS I GET THE LIST FOR CITIZENS COMMENTS, WE'LL GET STARTED.
GIVE ALL THE CREDIT TO MICHELLE REINHART SINCE SHE DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING.
[00:55:02]
HERS IS ALWAYS SO LONG.[8. Citizens' Comments]
AND I SEE OUR. OUR FIRST ON OUR LIST WERE ACTUALLY OUR PRESENTERS EARLIER.SO IT LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE TWO PEOPLE ON OUR LIST, EUNICE INGAMONSON AND JESSICA COLE.
EUNICE, YOU WANT TO START US OFF? GOOD MORNING. MY NAME IS EUNICE INGRAM.
IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO SAY THAT EVERYONE SHOULD GET A FAIR AND EQUAL TREATMENT HERE.
IN RECENT PAST, I HAVE HEARD MULTIPLE CASES OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS BEING ROUTINELY CALLED THE N-WORD, RECEIVING HARSHER TREATMENT BY THE POLICE FOR THE SAME OFFENSES THAN THEIR WHITE COUNTERPARTS TO RECEIVE, BEING OSTRACIZED BY PEERS IN SCHOOL AND BEING LOOKED DOWN ON AND IGNORED BY TEACHERS.
EVEN HALF ASIAN STUDENTS HAVE REPORTED BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST.
I ALSO HAVE HEARD OF MULTIPLE LGBTQ YOUTH ATTEMPTING SUICIDE, SOME SUCCEEDING, EXPERIENCING OR WITNESSING VIOLENCE BECAUSE OF LGBTQ BEING MISGENDERED DETAINED BY FACULTY OR STAFF OR OTHER ADULTS IN THE SCHOOL SETTING, OR WERE AT THE VERGE OF HOMELESSNESS BECAUSE IT WASN'T SAFE FOR THEM TO GO HOME TO THEIR HOMOPHOBIC AND TRANSPHOBIC FAMILY.
THIS HAS BEEN THE STATUS QUO OF OUR COMMUNITY AND IT PAINTS A PICTURE.
THE ONLY WAY WE CAN ACHIEVE AN EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT WHERE ALL STUDENTS THRIVE IS WORK HARD TO EQUIP STAFF, STUDENTS AND PARENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE, INCLUDING HISTORY AND SCIENCE AND TRAINED STAFF, STUDENTS AND PARENTS TO UNDO DESTRUCTIVE HABITS AND BUILD INCLUSIVE HABITS.
NONE OF THESE THINGS THAT I'M TALKING ABOUT WOULD DEHUMANIZE A PERSON OF EUROPEAN DESCENT, MAKE HER ENCOURAGE CISGENDER STUDENTS, TRANSGENDER OR TRANS STUDENTS, GAY OR LESBIAN.
BUT I HOPE IT WILL HELP US LEARN TO REACH ACROSS THE AISLE IN HUMILITY, FRIENDSHIP AND GOODWILL AND TO LEARN FROM EACH OTHER AND TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT.
LET US COMMIT TO WORK HARD TOWARD THE GOAL OF EVERYONE THRIVING IN BATTLE GROUND.
HELLO BOARD. MY NAME IS JESSICA COLE.
I'M A PARENT THAT HAD KIDS IN THE SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT.
AND I FIRST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU, AMANDA.
I SAW THE FENTANYL PRESENTATION ADVERTISING THE BULLETIN LAST WEEK, AND IT WAS A GREAT TURNOUT.
AND THANK YOU FOR SAYING A LOT SO I CAN TALK ABOUT OTHER THINGS.
IT WAS, FIRST OF ALL, VERY ENTERTAINING.
THE OFFICER HAD A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR TO KEEP US ENGAGED AND IT WAS VERY INFORMATIVE.
ONE THING THAT I LEARNED THAT I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IS THEY SAID OFTEN SOMEONE WILL NEED LIKE THREE DOSES OF NARCAN, WHICH I DID NOT KNOW THAT IF THEY WERE OVERDOSING.
AND WHAT I HEARD OFF THE RECORD FROM SOMEONE AND I'LL JUST KEEP IT AT THAT, IS THAT THEY PRAISED OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT SPECIFICALLY FOR SUCH SUPPORT ON DRUG PREVENTION.
THEY SAID THAT THIS IS THE BEST DISTRICT IN THE COUNTY.
AND THAT WASN'T JUST TO SAY THAT THEY MEANT IT VERY SINCERELY.
AND I KNOW WE HAVE AWESOME DREAM TEAM WITH BLAKE BOWER AND CORY KOHLER'S VERY AMAZING TOO.
AND I GOT TO MEET SHELLEY LAST WEEK AND I KNOW WE HAVE MORE INTERVENTION EMPLOYEES.
[01:00:09]
SO THE THE TRAINING TOMORROW IF YOU SIGN UP ON THE IT'S PREVENT TOGETHER BG DOT ORG.SO IF YOU SIGN UP, YOU CAN GET THE NARCAN FOR FREE AND THE WHOLE EVENT IS FREE AND IT'S ON ZOOM AND IN-PERSON AT THE CITY HALL.
THIS WEEK IS RED RIBBON WEEK, WHICH IS THE 23RD THROUGH THE 31ST.
AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT DREAM TEAM HAS BEEN DOING FOR A LONG TIME.
SO THEY GO AND THEY PLANT TULIPS THIS WEEK AND IN THE SPRING THEY'LL COME UP RED.
AND I'M GOING TO JUST READ THIS BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE IT MEMORIZED.
IT'S ALSO A GREAT TIME TO CELEBRATE OUR COMMUNITIES, FOCUS ON YOUTH, AND BE REMINDED OF THE FACT THAT MOST KIDS IN BATTLE GROUND ARE MAKING HEALTHY CHOICES TO LIVE DRUG FREE. AND YOU CAN FIND A MORE ON THE PREVENT TOGETHER WEBSITE.
AND THIS SATURDAY IS THE DRUG TAKEBACK FROM 10 TO 2 AT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
AND IF ANYONE CAN LEAVE THIS MEETING AT 7 TO 9, NEXT DOOR IS THE US AIR FORCE CONCERT BAND AND SINGING SERGEANTS TO CELEBRATE THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AIR FORCE.
SO I HAVE ONE OF THESE FOR ALL OF YOU.
OH, HOW NICE. THANK YOU, JESSICA.
BUT. AND THANK YOU FOR ENDURING OUR SILENCE.
THE BOARD DOESN'T TYPICALLY COMMENT ON CITIZENS COMMENTS, BUT WE TAKE THAT INFORMATION AND IT'S NICE TO HAVE A COUPLE OF ENGAGED COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO GO TO THINGS THAT WE CAN'T ALWAYS GET TO AND REPORT ON IT FOR US.
[9. Consent Agenda]
I KNOW WE'RE HEADED TO THE CONSENT AGENDA.I JUST WANTED TO STATE FOR THE BOARD THAT FOUR ITEM F APPROVAL OF THE DONATION FROM YANCOAL AMBOY PTO.
WE HAVE WITH US HERE TODAY KELLY GORBY, PRINCIPAL OF YAKULT.
IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS ON THAT ONE.
YEAH. FOR ITEM G APPROVAL OF THE STATE GRANT APPLICATION, THE HIGHLY CAPABLE GRANT, WE HAVE OUR DIRECTOR OF FEDERAL PROGRAMS, LYNELLE MURRAY, IS IN THE AUDIENCE IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS AROUND THOSE.
AND THEN FOR ITEM H APPROVAL OF THE CARL PERKINS FEDERAL GRANT, WE HAVE OUR DIRECTOR OF CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION, CINDY ARNOLD HERE. IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS AROUND THOSE.
SO WHICH ONE DID YOU WANT A FEATURE? WELL, THE STATE GRANT APPLICATION FOR THE HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM.
AND THAT'S JUST IT'S GREAT TO SEE THAT IT'S BEING SUPPORTED IN SUCH A MANNER.
AND IS THAT ELSE? THAT'S LYNELLE.
TERRI OKAY. ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SAY ON THAT? I DO WANT TO RECOGNIZE JENNIFER MERRITT, ALTHOUGH.
I DO WANT TO RECOGNIZE THE HARD WORK OF ALL THE ASPIRE CLUSTER TEACHERS, THE MAGNET TEACHERS, AND THEN OUR COORDINATOR, JENNIFER MERRITT, WHO IS ALSO SERVING AS AN INTERIM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR PLEASANT VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL.
AND SHE'S ALSO MAINTAINING THE PROGRAM.
SO KUDOS TO THAT AND THE PROGRAM AND A GROUP OF ABOUT 16 JUST GOT BACK CLASS YESTERDAY FROM THE WAY TAG CONFERENCE UP IN SEATTLE ON DIFFERENTIATING FOR GIFTED LEARNERS.
SO THEY WERE ALL ABLE TO ATTEND THAT CONFERENCE BECAUSE OF THE GRANT.
DO WE DO SOME ADDITIONAL SUPPLEMENTATION FROM THE DISTRICT ON THAT? YEAH, I FIGURED WE DO.
YEAH. WHICH I WOULD HOPE IS WELL WORTH IT TO SERVE THAT COMMUNITY.
[01:05:03]
YEAH. OKAY.THIS IS ARNOLD. YOU WANT TO MAKE A STATEMENT OR ANYTHING ON THE CAR? THE CARL PERKINS IS AN ANNUAL GRANT THAT GETS PUT ON THE CONSENT AGENDA AND OFTEN FLIES BY.
BUT I BELIEVE THOSE NUMBERS WE SAW ON THE SCREEN EARLIER, A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THAT.
WE ARE UP A LITTLE BIT IN OUR PERKINS GRANT THIS YEAR.
AND APPLYING FOR THE GRANT ALLOWS US TO TO APPLY FOR SOME ADDITIONAL FUNDING THROUGH PERKINS AND I HAVE READY TO ALSO SUBMIT ABOUT ANOTHER 25,000 MORE FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDING.
SO ONCE YOU ONCE YOU HOPEFULLY APPROVED THAT, GREAT.
AND SO IT WAS PUT ON THE BACK BURNER.
AND SO WE'RE FINALLY WANTING TO DO THIS AGAIN.
THE KIDS ARE BURNING THEIR LEGS ON THE SLIDE, AND IT'S JUST IT'S JUST TIME.
I THINK IT'S BEEN THERE SINCE THE SIXTIES IS IT NEEDS TO GO SO.
WE APPROVE THAT EVERY YEAR, BUT IT'S ANOTHER GREAT EXAMPLE OF WORKING BETTER TOGETHER.
ALL THE PEATOS AND PITAS AND THINGS.
I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY CAN ANSWER A QUESTION OF WHAT A PIE IS, ALTHOUGH I LIKE THE ACRONYM.
I BELIEVE PARENTS AND PARENTS IN EDUCATION, IT'S SERVING THE SAME FUNCTION.
BUT YES, A TASTY ACRONYM FOR AND I WANT TO ASSURE THE BOARD THAT MICHELLE AND TOM WENT THROUGH TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY MET THE CRITERIA.
SO YOU CAN SEE THERE, WE LOOKED AT THEIR BYLAWS, MAKE SURE THEIR BYLAWS WERE IN ORDER.
WE LOOKED AT THEIR CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE, MAKE SURE THAT WAS IN ORDER.
AND THEN WHETHER OR NOT THEY HAD OFFICERS AND THE OFFICERS NAMES WERE PROVIDED.
SO WE COULD ASSURE THAT CONTACT INFORMATION, TRAINING AND ALL OF THOSE KINDS OF THINGS.
WE APPRECIATE THE PARTNERSHIP WITH ALL THE PARENTS AT THOSE SCHOOLS.
OKAY. SO CONSENT AGENDA ITEM A IS THE APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA ITSELF.
ITEM B, APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM THE OCTOBER TEN, 2022 REGULAR MEETING.
ITEM F APPROVAL OF DONATION FROM THE AMBOY PTO.
ITEM G. APPROVAL OF THE STATE GRANT APPLICATION.
AND THAT'S THE ONE WE HEARD ABOUT THE TALENTED AND GIFTED.
APPROVAL OF CARL PERKINS FEDERAL GRANT.
ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD MEMBERS? I MOVED, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVED THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.
IT'S BEEN MOVED TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED TO US.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
[11. New Business]
SO THAT BRINGS US TO OUR NEW BUSINESS.YES. POLICY 1400 AS MARK STATED, THE TITLE MEETINGS, PUBLIC NOTICE, QUORUM MEETING, CONDUCT AND ORDER OF BUSINESS AND PUBLIC COMMENT HAS BEEN REVISED TO ALIGN WITH THE NEW STATE LAWS, SPECIFICALLY OPEN CARRY OF GUNS AND OTHER WEAPONS AT CITY AND COUNCIL MEETINGS, ELECTION SITES AND OFF CAMPUS SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS ARE PROHIBITED.
[01:10:06]
SO KUDOS TO US FOR SWITCHING TO THE SWAGIT SYSTEM, WHICH WE ALREADY MEET THAT CRITERIA.THE NEW LAW REQUIRES GOVERNING BODIES TO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC COMMENT BEFORE ACTION IS TAKEN AND OUR AGENDAS ARE SET IN A WAY THAT THAT'S ALLOWED. OUR OUR PUBLIC COMMENT IS BEFORE NEW BUSINESS, AND THAT'S WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR ACTION AND THE MEETING'S SUBJECT TO OPEN PUBLIC MEETINGS.
ACT UP, MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL LOCATION WHERE THE PUBLIC CAN ATTEND THE MEETING WITH TWO EXCEPTIONS.
AND THE THE COVID SITUATION WOULD BE AN EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING LIKE THAT WHERE THE GOVERNOR ISSUES A PROCLAMATION, AND FOR THAT PERIOD OF TIME WE WEREN'T ABLE TO HOLD THOSE PUBLIC MEETINGS.
SO IT'S JUST BEEN REVISED AND AND TO ALIGN WITH THESE CHANGES, YOU CAN SEE THE POLICY AND THE PROCEDURE HAS BEEN INCLUDED FOR A YEAR PURVIEW.
TAKE QUESTIONS. QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD.
ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CHANGES TO POLICY.
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVED THE REVISION OF POLICY FOR 100 MEETINGS, PUBLIC NOTICE, QUORUM MEETING, CONDUCT AND ORDER OF BUSINESS AND PUBLIC COMMENT, AND MOVED TO APPROVE THE REVISIONS OF POLICY 1400.
SOUNDS LIKE WE'VE HAD OUR QUESTIONS.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 4 TO 0.
AND IT CAME UP AT IT CAME UP AT THE PLANNING MEETING THAT WE HAD THAT THE WORD TELEGRAM WAS INCLUDED IN THERE.
OH, DID YOU? OKAY. NICE TO KNOW.
WE'VE DECIDED THAT YOU ACTUALLY CAN SEND A TELEGRAM IF YOU NEED TO, BUT.
BUT AS A BOARD MEMBER, IT MUST BE.
IT'D BE EASIER IF YOU JUST SENT AN EMAIL OR GAVE US A TEXT OR PICKED UP THE PHONE.
YEAH, I THINK YOU COULD. I EXPECT YOUR TELEGRAM TO DELIVER BY PONY EXPRESS.
THANK YOU FOR REMINDING MR. HENDRICKSON AND I, I THINK, ARE GOING TO SIGN UP FOR OUR REFRESHER AT THE UPCOMING CONFERENCE, SO HOPEFULLY WE HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN ANY.
BUT YOU DO HAVE TO WORK ON KEEPING UP ON THESE.
OUR NEXT ITEM OF NEW BUSINESS ITEM B REVISION OF POLICY 1410 EXECUTIVE OR CLOSED SESSIONS.
MR. WATERS AGAIN, 1400 WAS CERTAINLY THE MORE COMPLEX OF THESE CHANGES.
IF YOU LOOK AT POLICY 1410 ITS TWO MINOR CHANGES EXCLUDING THE PUBLIC FROM THE MEETING PLACE.
PLACE WAS ELIMINATED FROM THE MEETING.
NOW INSTEAD OF THE MEETING PLACE AND ANNOUNCE WAS ADDED IN GREEN.
AND THEN BELOW YOU CAN SEE THAT A LINE WAS ADDED.
AND THOSE ARE THE ONLY THOSE ARE THE ONLY CHANGES THAT ARE BEING PROPOSED.
BUT THIS PUTS US IN LINE AND TAKES THOSE OFF THE THE HOUR TO DO LIST.
ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS? I MOVE THAT THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE REVISION OF POLICY 1410 EXECUTIVE OR CLOSED SESSIONS? GREAT. THANK YOU. IT'S BEEN MOVED TO APPROVE THE REVISIONS TO POLICY 1410 EXECUTIVE AND CLOSED SESSIONS.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SIGNIFY BY SAYING AYE.
AYE. ALL THOSE OPPOSED REVISIONS ARE APPROVED.
4-0. YOU'VE GOT FUTURE EVENTS.
[12. Future Agenda Items and Board Events]
[01:15:06]
THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME THE DATE OF THE NEXT MEETING.I'LL PUT THAT ON MY CALENDAR AND SEE IF I CAN MAKE IT AND TAKE MY TURN IF I DON'T KNOW.
OKAY, THAT'S GREAT. ANY OTHERS? SO WE'RE MEETING OUR NEXT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING IS THE 14TH.
YEAH, BUT TED WILL BE JOINING US AFTER THE 16TH.
WE LEAVE FOR THE WHAT'S TO COME.
GREAT. YEAH. AND I DON'T THINK THERE'S ANY I DON'T SEE ON MY CALENDAR BOARD TOURS.
THAT'S BECAUSE OF THE WAIVER DAY IN NOVEMBER.
AND THERE WAS ANOTHER CONFLICT.
NOVEMBER DIDN'T WORK AND DECEMBER WAS KIND OF SHORT THAT IT WOULD BE JUST.
[13. Work Session]
SO NEXT UP IS OUR DISCUSSION OF THE THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE BREAKOUT SESSIONS.I KNOW JACKI SENT IN A LIST OF YES, I HAVE CHOICES THAT SHE WAS INTERESTED IN.
IF I CAN GET TO MY FOLDER, I CAN FIND MY SPREADSHEET.
YEAH, I THINK YOU'RE ONLY THERE FOR FRIDAY.
JUST. AND I TRIED TO DO SOME HIGHLIGHTING.
IT DIDN'T LIKE THAT BACK AND WOULDN'T ALLOW ME TO SAVE CHANGES THAT.
AND SO I JUST THOUGHT, YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW.
HAVE YOU HAD ANY COMMUNICATION FROM LOGAN? ARE YOU ON THAT LIST OF STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS? A FEW EMAILS FROM HIM, I'M SURE ABOUT HOW DIRECTED THEY WERE, THOUGH.
YEAH, THEY MIGHT BE LIKE A BLAST OUT TO EVERYBODY.
YEAH, I WROTE HIM BECAUSE I'VE SERVED ON SEVERAL COMMITTEES WITH HIM AND HE'S THE HEAD OF THE STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS GROUP AND ASKED HIM IF THEY HAD SPECIFIC EVENTS, WHICH I KNOW THEY HAVE IN THE PAST, AND THEY'RE NOT ALWAYS ON THE SCHEDULE LIKE THIS.
THEY'RE LIKE, LET'S GO MEET IN HOTEL LOBBY NUMBER OR WHATEVER FOR THIS.
AND SO HOPEFULLY HE'LL GIVE ME SOME OF THAT AND WE CAN SEE WHERE THEY FIT IN.
I THINK THAT RICARDO AND I HAVE ALWAYS A STRUGGLE WITH, RIGHT? GOTCHA. OK, DO THEY RECORD THOSE OK? UH, SO I KNOW SANDY HELPED ME REGISTER FOR A COUPLE OF THE PRE-REGISTERED ONES.
LAW CONFERENCE, RIGHT? YEAH. SANDY PROVIDED THAT.
AND MY SECOND ROUND OF THE EQUITY.
YES. DID YOU REGISTER FOR THE SECOND ROUND OF EQUITY? YES. GOOD.
I'M ONLY ABLE TO GET ONE MORE MEMBER.
AND MARK WAS THE FIRST ONE I STARTED WITH.
AFTER THAT, I TRIED TO GET THE SECOND ONE AND I WAS NOT ABLE.
COULDN'T FIND THE BACK UP TO SAY THAT.
I KNOW. AND I DID FIND A CHART.
IF YOU WANT, WE CAN TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO PULL IT UP.
I DID SOME SEARCHING THROUGH WAS THAT IT WAS NOT EASY TO FIND, BUT THERE'S NOW A KIND OF A FLOWCHART OF, OKAY, IF YOU DID THIS ONE THIS TIME, WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER CHOICES? THERE'S ONLY A COUPLE OF THINGS AVAILABLE, AND THERE WILL BE THOSE SESSIONS AVAILABLE EITHER AS A REMOTE ACCESS, LIKE A ZOOM TYPE ACCESS AND OR AT REGIONAL MEETINGS.
THEN WE HAVE OUR NEXT REGIONAL MEETINGS.
BUT THERE WASN'T ONE SCHEDULED FOR OUR DISTRICT SIX YET.
THE ONE THAT YOU PUT IN THAT RECENT EMAIL.
SO, MARK, HOW ARE YOU DOING THAT? ARE YOU GOING TO THE LAW CONFERENCE UNTIL AND THEN I'M GOING, RIGHT.
I GET A HALF HOUR BREAK AND THEN I JUMP INTO THE OPM ONE.
CAN. WHEN ARE YOU DOING THE EQUITY TRAINING? THE NEXT DAY OR THE NEXT DAY? SATURDAY. SO I AM BOOKED UNTIL ALMOST 4:00 ON FRIDAY, RIGHT?
[01:20:02]
OH, OKAY.RIGHT. SO CAN WE GO? CAN WE JUST TALK? BREAKOUT SESSION, NUMBER ONE.
SURE. SURE. JACKIE IS INTERESTED IN THE BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT.
AN OFT MISUNDERSTOOD PARTNERSHIP.
AND THEN SHE'S ALSO INTERESTED IN THE ROBERT'S RULES OF ORDER.
I ACTUALLY PUT THAT ONE ON MY LIST.
SO THERE'S ROOM FOR TWO? SURE. AND SHE SAID SHE WOULD ALSO BE INTERESTED IN THE LEVEES AND BOND FACTS.
YEAH, THAT ONE'S ON MY LIST, TOO.
THERE'S THE NEXT DAY, THERE'S ANOTHER LEVEE BOND ONE.
SO IF YOU DON'T GET AT THAT TIME, YOU CAN PICK IT UP AGAIN.
SO, MARY, WHICH ONE WERE YOU LEANING TOWARDS? I'M LEANING TOWARDS ROBERT'S RULES.
OKAY. SO, ROB, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT? THAT ONE SEVEN STEPS TO CREATING DIVERSE, EQUITABLE AND.
OKAY, THAT'S GREAT. THAT'S GREAT.
SO IF WE PUT IF WE PUT JACKIE AND THE BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT ONE FOR THAT.
YEAH. AND THEN MARY'S GOT THE ROBERT'S RULES OF ORDER.
OH, THAT'S THE SAME ONE WE WENT TO.
YEAH, BUT HEARING IT AGAIN FOR YOU.
ARE YOU WILLING TO DO ME A FAVOR? HAVE I EARNED ANY FAVORS? GO FOR IT. OKAY. SO I SWITCHED MINE TO THE EQUITY ONE, WHICH IS A SET SESSION.
I WAS HOPING TO GO TO THE SUICIDE PREVENTION.
I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THAT ONE.
THAT'D BE GREAT. I'D LOVE TO GET AN UPDATE ON THAT ONE.
YOU CAN DO THAT ONE, BECAUSE I'LL BE WITH JACKIE AND YOU'LL BE WITH ROB, SO THAT'S FINE.
IF A BETTER STUDENT ONE COMES ALONG, YOU CAN JUMP SHIP.
BUT THAT WAS WHAT I WAS GOING TO GO FOR.
SO THAT GIVES US. AND IF THAT HAPPENS, YOU TELL ME AND I'LL JUMP OVER TO THAT ONE.
I THINK THAT GIVES US THAT GIVES US GREAT COVERAGE.
BREAKOUT SESSION TO JACKIE'S INTERESTED IN A FOCUS ON STUDENT SUCCESS.
FROM THE BOARD TO THE CLASSROOM, THE STUDENT PERSPECTIVE ON STUDENT VOICE OR THE DUAL LANGUAGE ONE, I HAD TO PUT DOWN THE FOCUS ON STUDENT SUCCESS.
OKAY, SO, MARY, WHY DON'T YOU GO AHEAD AND TAKE THAT ONE.
BUT I ALSO HAD PUT DOWN INFLUENCING FOR WARDS OF PHYSICIANS AND PRIORITIES.
SO I'M KIND OF TORN ON THAT ONE.
OKAY. WELL, LET'S SEE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE.
YEAH, LET'S SEE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE DOING.
I WAS INTERESTED IN THAT SCHOOL SECURITY.
IT'S PRETTY RELEVANT. IT'S A OH, IT'S ON THE END.
OKAY. YEAH, THAT'S A GOOD ONE, TOO.
OKAY, SO TED WILL TAKE THAT ONE.
NO, THAT'S GOOD. I JUST LIKE TO GO IN KNOWING THAT.
YOU'RE STILL YOU'RE STILL IN EQUITY TRAINING.
YEAH. SO ROB WAS ABLE TO LISTEN TO THE KEYNOTE BREAKOUT FOR JARED FOR THE WASHINGTON STATE SCHOOL, THE STATE TEACHER OF THE YEAR. THAT'LL BE A GOOD ONE.
YEAH, I THINK I'LL GO TO THAT ONE. MARK, GET ONE DOCUMENTS ON THE SCREEN NOW.
WELL, MARY, IF YOU WANT TO DO THE INFLUENCING THE WSSDA, WE CAN PUT JACKIE IN THE FOCUS ON STEEL.
YEAH. AND THEN MARY WILL GO THERE.
AND THEN SORA, WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING? WERE YOU LOOKING FOR A STUDENT PERSPECTIVE ON STUDENT? I WAS LOOKING AT THAT ONE.
OR THE STUDENT SUPPORT STUDENT BEHAVIOR POST COVID.
EITHER ONE OF THOSE I THOUGHT WAS, THAT'S GOOD TOO.
THAT WAS A TOSS UP BETWEEN THAT ONE, THE STUDENT SUPPORT AND THE UNIVERSAL SCREENING.
OKAY, SHELLY, WHY DON'T YOU DO THE STUDENT SUPPORT? OKAY. AND THEN.
IT LEAVES ME. AND WHAT WAS THE OTHER ONE YOU HAD?
[01:25:01]
THE UNIVERSAL SCREENING.I CAN DO THAT ONE OR YOU CAN DO THAT ONE AND I CAN DO THE OTHER ONE.
AND THAT GIVES US GOOD COVERAGE THERE.
SO WOULD YOU RATHER ATTEND ONE OF THOSE INSTEAD OF THE.
OKAY, WHAT ABOUT BREAKOUT SESSION NUMBER THREE? WHAT'S EVERYBODY LEANING TOWARDS? I LIKE BREAKING BARRIERS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS.
OKAY. THAT'S WHEN I HEAD DOWN TO.
BUT LET'S SEE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE WANT TO DO BECAUSE I HAVE A COUPLE OF THEM DOWN.
I DID THE BOARDS ROLE AND CHANGING DISTRICT CULTURE.
I WAS LOOKING AT A MODIFIED CALENDAR.
MODIFIED CALENDAR. I THINK THAT YEAH, THAT WAS THE OTHER ONE I HAD DOWN.
WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING AT? I LIKED THE CULTURE OF BELONGING.
YEAH, OKAY. THAT'S A GOOD ONE.
JACQUI, AN INTRODUCTION TO POLICY GOVERNANCE, COHERENT GOVERNANCE, BALANCED GOVERNANCE.
THAT WAS ONE OF THE ONES SHE ALSO HAD.
THE ONE MARK WAS INTERESTED IN, THE ONE ROB WAS INTERESTED SO WE COULD GIVE JACKIE.
THE SECOND ONE. SO SHELLEY, MARY AND MYSELF, WHAT ARE YOU GUYS LOOKING AT? MARY WHICH ONE? WELL, THE TWO I PUT DOWN WAS BREAKING BARRIERS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS AND THE DISTRICT'S JOURNEY.
IMPLEMENTING A MODIFIED CALENDAR.
YEAH, WELL, EITHER ONE OF THOSE, WHICHEVER ONE YOU.
I'LL DO THE CALENDAR. YOU'LL DO THE CALENDAR.
I THINK I'M GOING TO GO WITH ROB OVER TO THE BREAKING BARRIERS OF STUDENT SUCCESS.
THE SYSTEMATIC CAPITAL FACILITY SHORTS FALLS.
IS THAT WHAT? KAYAK.COM? YEAH, I THINK I'M GETTING MOST OF THE INFORMATION ON THAT THROUGH THE TRUST LANDS DEAL, SO I'M NOT INTERESTED IN THAT.
IT'S VERY SPECIFIC TO THERE WE ALREADY HEARD THE PRESENTATION OF YEAH WE DID.
YEAH. OKAY SO LET'S GO TO SATURDAY BREAKOUT FOR JACKIE HAS THE FIRST TWO THE STRATEGIES FOR RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL BOND AND EFFECTIVE SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATION.
I WAS INTERESTED IN THREE YEARS OF STUDENT VOICE.
PERFECT. MARK, WHY DON'T YOU GO AHEAD AND TAKE THAT ONE? TED. NOT THERE.
EITHER WE ALL BELONG HERE OR THIS STUDENT ANALYSIS FOR RECOGNITION AND IMPROVEMENT.
OKAY, SO WHICH ONE ARE YOU THINKING? OH, IT WAS KIND OF DOWN TO THOSE TWO.
WHICH ONE DO YOU THINK WOULD BE BETTER? I. YEAH, I DON'T.
I MEAN, I THINK THE EDUCATIONAL EQUITY ONE, WE ALL BELONG HERE.
I THINK THE STUDENT ANALYSIS SYSTEM IS GOING TO BE MORE.
MORE. IT'S ABOUT A IT'S ABOUT A STUDENT SYSTEM, RIGHT? IT'S DATA PROGRAM.
SORRY. YOU PROBABLY ENJOY THE.
WE ALL BELONG HERE. I SEE THAT ONE.
AND WE DO GET TO PUT RICARDO IN MIX ESSENTIALLY, RIGHT? YEAH. OKAY.
YEAH. I JUST THINK EASY THOUGH.
I THINK WE GET A MATRIX TOGETHER THAT WE.
YEAH. AND IT'S OKAY FOR TWO PEOPLE TO GO TO THE SAME SESSION SOMETIMES.
IT'S KIND OF NICE TO HAVE A PARTNER TALK YOU.
WELL, MARY, MARY AND ROB, WHAT WERE YOU GUYS THINKING? ARE YOU GOING TO GO TO THE LEDGE? WELL, THAT'S WHAT I'M DOING NOW.
I'LL BE GLAD TO DO THAT, TO COVER THAT WITH THAT ONE.
YEAH, I MAY HAVE TO LEAVE A LITTLE BIT EARLY.
OKAY. I'LL DO THE INCLUSIONARY PRACTICE, REALIZING THE DREAM FOR ALL LEARNERS.
[01:30:03]
WE'LL SEND JACKIE TO EFFECTIVE SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATION.AND I'LL DO STRATEGIES FOR RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL BOND.
OKAY BACK. AND THAT LEAVES SHELLY WHAT'S LEFT TO GO WITH? PROBABLY NOT, SHELLY.
SHELLY WILL GO TO THE BOND ONE WITH ME.
OKAY, LET'S GO TO BREAK OUT NUMBER FIVE.
YEAH. ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR THEIR.
INCLUSION FOR ALL ONE DISTRICT'S JOURNEY TO SPECIAL EDUCATION REFORM.
I WAS GOING TO DO THE CREATING SAFER SPACES FOR LGBTQ AND YOUTH.
I PUT DOWN LEVERAGING STUDENT PLACE ON YOUR BOARD.
SORRY. I WAS ALSO THINKING THE SAFER SPACES FOR LGBTQ YOUTH.
I DIDN'T KNOW IF THE LEVERAGING STUDENT VOICE.
I FEEL LIKE THAT WAS MORE TOWARDS THE BOARD.
YEAH. YEAH. RIGHT, MARY, I'M GOING TO HAVE TO LEAVE BEFORE YOU ARE, TOO.
I THINK SO. JACKIE SAID SHE GOES TO ABOUT 915 ISH.
YEAH. YEAH. I WAS THINKING MAYBE I'LL SEND JACKIE TO UNDERSTANDING YOUR SCHOOL'S BUSINESS OFFICE, AND THEN I THINK WE'RE ALL GONE FOR THE LAST SESSION, RIGHT? YEAH. HE WAS OUT.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A LOT TO SHARE.
THANK YOU, EVERYBODY. NOT ME TO MAKE CONTACT WITH RICARDO.
AND, YEAH, MAYBE HE WOULD SEND THIS INFORMATION.
MARK, IF YOUR CONTACT IS JUST TO REMIND THEM.
DID YOU. DID YOU MAKE, LIKE, A MASTER? I DID MAKE A MASTER. AND I'LL SHARE IT WITH SANDI, AND WE'LL TRY TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER.
OKAY. SO DO YOU WANT ME TO REACH OUT TO RICARDO? ALL RIGHT. GOT IT.
OKAY. THE ELECTRIC PLANNING AND WE STILL ARE DOING PRETTY GOOD ON TIME.
SO ANYTHING ELSE FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER? NO. OH.
I'LL JUST MENTION IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO DIG THIS OUT, BUT ALL OF US HAVE TO GET WHAT? EVENTUALLY 15 HOURS OF EQUITY TRAINING AND 5 HOURS IN THE FIRST 5 HOURS FOR THE INITIAL TWO AND A HALF HOURS FOR THE SECOND FOR THE CONTINUING.
THANK YOU FOR CLARIFYING THAT.
SO MOST OF US DID THE ROUND ONE VERSION, THE INTRODUCTION TO COMMITMENT TO EQUITY LAST YEAR, AND ONLY A COUPLE OF THOSE ARE AVAILABLE NOW.
SO I SANDY GOT ME INTO THE IDENTITY DISCRIMINATION.
I LOOK AT THE FEDERAL INVOLVEMENT AND THEN THE WEBSITE PROMISES THAT THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE THESE OTHER OPTIONS AVAILABLE THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR THAT YOU'LL EITHER HAVE A CHANCE TO GET ONTO IT BY ZOOM HAS A DISTANCE PRESENTATION OR THEY MAY OFFER IT AT THE DISTRICT SIX REGIONAL EVENT IN THE SPRING, ASSUMING THAT HAPPENS.
DON'T JUST SAY, YOU KNOW, THAT'S THOSE ARE WHAT YOUR CHOICES ARE.
AND I DON'T THINK THERE'S AN EQUITY COURSE, POLICE OR ANYTHING.
IT'S KIND OF AN HONOR SYSTEM TO TAKE THEM, BUT THOSE ARE THE OFFERINGS.
WELL, IF THAT'S IT. I'D LIKE TO ADJOURN THIS OCTOBER 24TH, 2022 BATTLE GROUND SCHOOL BOARD MEETING.
THANK YOU, EVERYBODY. THANK YOU, MARK.
THERE'S ONE DOCUMENT FOR ALL THE BOARDS TO SIGN.
OKAY, GREAT. MARK.
